Soy milk is a natural binder that can turn colorful earth pigments into a wonderful paint to create printed designs on fiber. The protein of soy milk allows minerals like ochre, umber and red oxide to adhere to textile to expand your natural palette with the rich hues found beneath your feet. This video tutorial will show you how to make homemade soy milk to prepare textile and earth pigment paint to print a one-of-a-kind pattern on cotton fiber.

My first colour is Cinnamon! It is a red ochre pigment, from the Guédelon medieval castle site. A wonderful orange-red earth tone, great for animal fur, bricks, or those fall forests.
It is also the name for a eumelanin-based coat colour in cats, the most recessive of the three variations of the black-coat gene.
As you can see, I'm still figuring out what I want to call the business, so I'll likely re-upload Cinnamon when I'm sure about what to title it!

Heidi Gustafson’s ‘Book of Earth’
In her new Book of Earth, published by Abrams, she takes us on a journey through rare pigments and their landscapes in a celebration of what she describes as the “behavior, capacities, being-ness, language, needs, and concerns” of the material.
Each chapter of Book of Earth is dedicated to an aspect of Gustafson’s archive, which contains more than 600 samples. The volume elucidates the world of natural color, challenging our perceptions of terrain and the inanimate world, and includes practical advice and techniques for creating your own pigments.

someone said ‘the whitest person in the world is living among us’ and then i realized i’m the whitest person in the world
#i think ppl don’t realize that having albinism means no pigment like i’m completely stripped of it#so i guess i am the whitest person on earth or one of them at least 😭😭#also a friend told me i’m the ‘blue eyed stare final boss’ and that’s the biggest compliment i’ve gotten ever

Over the past week or so, I have experimented with Tuxedo (Iron oxide), Abyssinian (caput mortuum), and Tabby, Brindle & Cypers (raw umber). Tabby, Brindle & Cypers need a bit more experimenting, and I might not make all three, but I'm definitely having a blast!
New pans should arrive soon, and I've got a few more pigments incoming as well. Hopefully next week I'll be able to make some big enough batches to finally get started putting them up on Ko-fi!

it says a lot about me that my idea of fun is writing 10k words about the reproductive systems of my aliens. it says even more about me that my other idea of fun is plotting out their color genetics down to the locus and every single possible color mutation and all methods of inheritance. melanocortin 1 receptor u will always be famous
#basically for colossals their base pigments are silver and gold instead of black and red like most earth animals#and they reproduce asexually in a manner similar to plants#well i dont think the gene would be mc1r 'realistically' speaking bc theyre from a different planet but even i have my limits#some might say i have autism. they would be right

The strange and alien can be found amongst the mundane and small. Little wonders can be found everywhere.
#it’s cool how varied life here is#trees with unique seed pods#bugs of all shapes and sizes and colors#variations on a theme in a competition for survival#and some of those methods appear otherworldly#and some of those otherworldly things are just outside your home#I love sci fi and I love speculative evolution#I love making up my own imaginary creatures and plants#but honestly#earths got me beat#there’s a tree outside my apartment building#it just started shedding its seed pods and I’ve never seen anything like it#and it’s not like I’m from another part of the country or the world#I’m an hour away from my parents house#but I’ve never seen those things before#I’ve found out that weevils live around me#and that tent caterpillars are mosaiced in lovely pigments down their sides#there’s a lot to the natural world#big and small#It’s nice#I’m glad I live here#I like it here#nebula rambles

I'm proud of this handmade watercolor palette. I experimented with a lot a pigments from various sources to create the strongest natural earth colors I could. They're very satisfying to paint with.
I usually use watercolors in mixed media and in my illustrations, but I wanted to try this palette out all by itself. Since these are natural earth pigments, it's basically a palette of browns, (and one gray). It makes painting a subject and interesting challenge with no blues or greens.

once i get my art space tidied back up i should inventory my paints. i think i might try and replicate my gouache go-to palette (I call it my iron palette - light red, prussian blue, yellow ochre, burnt umbre) in watercolors
#also i think somehow i bought windsor blue gouache instead of prussian blue gouache???#anyway i love the palette its literally just like cheap warm earth tones + prussian blue (oxidized ferrocyanide salt)#and everyone was like your palettes in each of your works feels so unified#it's not a strict palette but more a baseline for my palette#when im drafting and experimenting for a piece/series ill like#add swap and remove pigments as needed#so like in one painting i added more vibrant reds and yellows (i think lemon yellow and a less-toxic paint based on cadmium red)#but the base palette was still the above palette
