I love the Apostle Paul's aproach to mental health. Some have told me that I live un a fantasy world by focusing on what the Bible says to think about. My response is to not end up in someone else's fantasy - nightmare that is designed to control us to buy or eat or do whatever they are selling. That lead Mick Jagar to write his song I can't get no satisfaction. Someone on the TV telling him how white his shirt should be. Paul had to cope with false imprisonment, homelessness, shipwreck, people trying to kill him, others trying to disgrace him. He had some kind of thorn in his side that he repeatedly asked God to remove and He never did that we know of. Paul knew how to keep his head in all of that. Fortunately he shared a piece of that "how" with us. I invite you to try this today. Let us know how you feel. Since May we have attended a different kind of church than we have before. It is steeped in interesting ancient traditions. They include reading from the Bible every service, saying the Lord's prayer and taking the Sacrament that they refer as the Eucharist. One seasonal tradition began today. It is known as Advent. ad·vent /ˈadˌvent/ the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event. "the advent of television" In this context it means the arrival of Jesus on Earth. To commemorate this the church changes the alter coverings to a beautiful purple and they lit a purple candle symbolizing hope. This season of Advent lasts until Christmas Day. I am fascinated by this idea of preparing for the coming of the birth of Jesus. Our Reverend preached today about how Advent is a time for reflection. Often we cover up or ignore our shortcomings, tragedies or pain. But instead this is a time to allow our true and raw selves come closer and accept the healing that our Lord offers freely for each of us. This time of year that often brings on feelings of loneliness, regret or depression can instead be a time to draw closer to our Savior. What a beautiful concept.
