What does this mean? Isn't exercise inherently healthy? Yes, most of us benefit from a varied activity/intensity exercise routine. However, if you have a chronic injury that's not necessarily the case. If your muscles can't stretch enough to allow for full range of motion, they are by definition not healthy. Muscles have 2 jobs: stretch & contract. Attempting to strengthen muscles which are not healthy to begin with is more likely to create further compensation. This means more force goes into the joint/s than it does strengthening the muscle. Increasing compensation creates more problems down the line. Your initial pain *may* improve, but you're setting the stage for other things to fall apart. Like a math problem, there's an order of operations to achieve the desired result (reduce pain & future injury risk). 1. Restore full range of motion by addressing adhesion. 2. Improve strength with specific exercise AFTER range of motion is healthy.
