hiii this is random but !! ive been watching the olympics gymnastics and im kind of Obsessed and wanna get into watching gymnastics not just once every 4 years ?? wondering if u have any advice on where to start !! coz i know Nothing lol :))
Hi, you're welcome!
There is plenty of gymnastics to watch all year round. The Olympics is the highlight though every 4 years!
Btw I also got into watching artistic gymnastics by seeing the Olympics (20 years ago 🤯, when watching was depending heavily on terrestrial broadcast).
I am not really sure if I am the best to explain artistic gymnastics and tbh I am not following gymnastics as closely as 10 years ago but I still try to give some advices. I hope it helps. Pls ask if anything is unlcear.
I think in short the best advice is to just watch as much gymnastics as you can 😁 With time you will see and understand more about the sport.
A short and incomplete introduction into artistic gymnastics:
Let's start with some basics:
There are different kind of gymnastics, but I assume anon talks about artistic gymnastics as this was the most prominent discipline that gets most attention.
The governing body of gymnastics is the FIG. You can find a YouTube channel, an Instagram account and a Twitter account.
There are two shortcuts for artistic gymnastics. Men Artistic Gymnastics = MAG and Women's Artistic Gymnastics = WAG.
Male gymnasts perform on 6 apparatus (Vault, Floor, High Bar, Parallel Bars, Pommel Horse and Still Rings), female gymnasts on 4 apparatus (Balance Beam, Uneven Bars, Vault and Floor). The All Around (AA) competition is the most prestigious as you have to be good on all apparatus.
I would not bother with understanding everything about the points for the start, but for the basics there is a Difficulty Score (D-Score) and an Execution Score (E-Score) for each routine. The execution score will be deducted starting by 10,0. The difficulty score is open end. How the deductions on the E-score work is far too complex to explain in a simple post but you can watch out for landing errors, going out of bounds on a landing on Floor and Vault, pointed feet and bend knees, just to name some common errors. A fall is easy to spot and is always 1,0 off. The D-Score works different. Each element has a value starting by A and going up to H. A has 0,1 difficulty and H has 0,8. The 8 most difficult elements count towards the D-Score. There are some different requirements on each apparatus what you have to fullfill, but it would lead to far here to explain.
Competitions:
Artistic gymnastics has a World Championship every year except in the Olympic year, so that's the event to watch out most besides the Olympics. It always happens some time in October each year. Next World Championship 2025 will be in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Before the World Championship there are multiple other competitions to watch. There are championships on continental level (European Championships for example), World Cups and national competitions. And more but these are the competitions I would put my focus on. The Nationals of the USA are probably the most hyped and easily accesible via YouTube. European Championships have various broadcasts on TV but also have their own streaming site here Most events have some form of livestreaming or videos accesible afterwards.
Watch just as much as you can from competitions. You can always rely on Youtube videos. Also old videos are fun to watch.
Gymnasts and countries I recommend to keep an eye on:
I will focus on those who compete at the Olympics this time, but tbf getting into gymnastics at the Olympics may be the worst time as a lot of gymnast you'll see at the Olympics retire afterwards. So next year you might not see many returning ones...
There are plenty of amazing gymnasts but the post is already far too long, so I'll point out a few of the best and a few of my faves. (There sadly is a picture limit per post on Tumblr)
WAG (Women's Artistic Gymnastics)
I guess this name is familiar but always worth mentioning: Simone Biles 🇺🇸(superstar of the sport, called "Greatest of All Time" GOAT and frontrunner for the last decade - most decorated gymnast of all time. Olympic AA champion 2016 and 2024, World AA Champion 2013,2014,2015,2018,2019,2023)
Tumblr media
Rebeca Andrade 🇧🇷 (World AA Champion 2022, Olympic Silver Medalist 2021 and 2024, Olympic VT Champion)
Tumblr media
Qiu Qiyuan 🇨🇳 (2023 Uneven Bars World Champion - great Beam and Bars worker - just won Olympic UB Silver 2024 few hours ago)
Tumblr media
Some others worth mentioning (sadly not pictured):
Kaylia Nemour 🇩🇿 (2024 UB Olympic champion - first African gymnast to win a medal at the Olympics)
Sunisa Lee 🇺🇸 (2021 AA Olympic Champion, 2024 AA & UB Bronze Medalist)
Flavia Saraiva 🇧🇷 (the most fun floor routines and gorgeous beam)
Elsabeth Black 🇨🇦 (fan favorite, 2017 Worlds AA Silver Medalist, 2022 Worlds Beam silver medalist)
Team USA is without a doubt the strongest nation in WAG. Not only did they win most of the team competitions the last decade, but also with quite a margin. Team Italy and Team Brazil have fought their way up to the top with Italy having a balanced team of gymnasts who can score evenly on all events and Team Brazil having superstar Rebeca Andrade who contributes massively with huge scores. Team China imo has the prettiest gymnastics of everyone but their weakest event Vault prevented them from winning team medals since 2014. Their strongest events are Beam and Uneven Bars.
Tumblr media
(From left to right: Team Italy, USA and Brazil)
MAG (Men's Artistic Gymnastics)
Zhang Boheng 🇨🇳(World AA Champion 2021, Olympic AA Silver Medalist 2024 - tbh the best AA gymnast atm but battling with injuries and lost the AA final by a few tenth despite having a fall)
Tumblr media
Daiki Hashimoto 🇯🇵 (Olympic AA and HB Champion 2021, World AA Champion 2022 & 2023)
Shinnosuke Oka 🇯🇵 (Olympic AA Champion 2024, World Junior AA Champion 2019 - the surprise AA Olympic Champion. Just 20 years old with a bright future)
Tumblr media
(Shinnosuke Oka (left) and Daiki Hashimoto (right))
Zou Jinyuan 🇨🇳 (Olympic PB champion 2021, World Champion - the cleanest execution on parallel bars and overall you'll ever see)
Tumblr media
Some more MAG gymnasts worth mentioning:
Carlos Yulo 🇵🇭 (first Philippine gymnast to win a world title and Olympic title - great AAer and Floor and Vault specialist - 2019 FX World Champion, 2024 Vault and Floor Olympic Champion)
Ilia Kovtun 🇺🇦 (2021 Worlds AA Bronze medalist & 2023 Worlds AA Silver Medalist)
Team China and Team Japan are those to watch out for the titles. They have the best teams and are far off all other countries atm (with Russia's team banned who won in Tokyo 2021) Team China is very strong on Still Rings and Parallel Bars. Team Japan is very strong on Parallel Bars
Tumblr media
(Podium from left to right: China, Japan and USA)
Team USA unlike in the women competition are not frontrunners, but have received the Bronze medal at this games with hitting 18/18 routines. Other teams to watch out are Team Great Britain and Team Ukraine. Team Ukraine are the current European Champions are strong on Parallel Bars and Vault. Their weakness is High Bar which costed them the team medal in Paris. Team Great Britain has strong gymnasts on most events, most prominently Vault, Pommel Horse and Floor.
Tumblr media
(Team Ukraine at the European Championship 2024 - from left to right: Nazar Chepurny, Stelmakh, Oleg Verniaev, Igor Radivilov and Ilia Kovtun)
About artistic gymnastics fandom:
If you wanna talk about gymnastics you can join the fandom, called gymternet. (The experience to see your faves suffering together may sting a little less 😅)
Tbh I am maybe not the right person to ask about fandom side of gymnastics (I am mostly active in figure skating fandom). There are a couple of "fandom" sites I use to follow gymnastics news: The Gymternet (link here) and The Balance Beam Situation (link here) (this one is a bit more on the "drama" side with the reporting)
For more fandom stuff you should better ask someone else for advice.
______
And while I am at it I also recommend watching rhythmic gymnastics, it's different but very beautiful. And the competition at this Olympics is about to happen from 8th to 10th August 2024! (Tbh by now I follow RG much closer than AG)

Paris Olympics: Parisians' Unusual Protest Over River Seine Cleanliness
A Historic Venue Revisited The romantic River Seine, a historical icon in Paris, is making a splash again in the sporting world. Over 124 years after hosting its first Olympic swimming events, the Seine is set to welcome athletes for the Marathon swimming and Triathlon events at the Paris Olympics. However, this picturesque river has recently been the center of an unusual and pungent protest by disgruntled Parisians.
Tumblr media
The Legacy of the Seine in the Olympics The Seine first hosted Olympic swimming events in 1900 at the Basins d’Asnières-Courbevoie, along a 13 km route in the heart of Paris. By 1923, however, swimming in the river was banned due to rising pollution and increasing traffic. Now, as the Seine gears up for the 2024 Olympics, concerns about its pollution levels and weather conditions are mounting.
The Push for a Cleaner Seine Efforts to make the Seine swimmable again date back to 1990 when former Paris mayor and French president Jacques Chirac promised to swim in the river to demonstrate its cleanliness. Although Chirac’s plan never materialized, current Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo made river swimming a key goal in the 2016 Paris Olympics bid, aiming to open 20 swimming areas by 2025.
Pollution Problems and Government Plans The Seine’s pollution issues stem from a combined sewer system introduced in the late 19th century, which mixes waste and stormwater. This system often leads to sewage overflow during heavy rains, contaminating the river with harmful bacteria like E. coli and Enterococci. To combat this, the French government has invested 1.5 billion euros in measures including a massive underground rainwater storage tank and enhanced sewage treatment facilities.
Protests and Public Outcry Despite these efforts, pollution levels remain a concern. A sewer issue led to the cancellation of an Olympic test event last year, and recent tests by the Surfrider Foundation revealed that the Seine’s water still fails to meet European Union regulations. In a bold move, French president Emmanuel Macron and Mayor Hidalgo planned to swim in the Seine to prove its safety but canceled due to snap elections. This prompted an anonymous online campaign under the hashtag #JeChieDansLaSeineLe23Juin (“I Shit in the Seine on June 23”), encouraging Parisians to defecate in the river as a form of protest.
The Protest Plan and Current Water Quality The protest, initially intended as a joke, gained traction, with a website providing a calculator for participants to determine the best time and place to defecate for maximum impact. Meanwhile, Mayor Hidalgo took a symbolic dip in the Seine on July 17, claiming the water was “very good.”
Current water quality data shows fluctuating pollution levels, with E. coli and Enterococci often exceeding safety limits. The World Triathlon Federation’s guidelines set maximum permissible levels at 900 cfu for E. coli and 330 cfu for Enterococci, but recent readings have frequently surpassed these thresholds.
Contingency Plans for the Olympics In response to these challenges, Olympic organizers have prepared contingency plans. If pollution levels remain high, swimming portions of the triathlon events may be canceled or relocated to alternative venues like the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
Conclusion As the Paris Olympics approach, the cleanliness of the River Seine remains a hot topic. While government efforts are ongoing, public protests highlight the urgency of the situation. The world will be watching to see if Paris can successfully host safe and clean swimming events in this iconic river.

Entry 3 - eSports Events
This week's entry will explore the world of eSports and dissection the various discussions surrounding the legitimacy of the activity and whether it should be deemed a professional sport, or a recreational hobby. Hallmann and Giel (2018) described sport as “all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental well-being, forming social relationships or obtaining results in competition at all levels” (pg. 14). This definition is very broad thus allowing almost any physical activity to be considered a sport as long as it is organised, contains social and physical health benefits, and is contested through competitions. Using this definition we can make an educated judgement on the validity of the activity through the definition of eSports provided by Wattanapisit et al. (2020) who describe eSports as the competition between players and teams that attempt to achieve video game-related activities through computer screen and technological interfaces. Therefore, comparing these two definitions implies that since eSports is conducted through physical activity, in organised competitions that benefit competitor's and audience members' well-being and social connections.
Artefact 4 – eSports Trophy Celebration
Tumblr media
(Kosolapov, 2023)
Despite the appropriate characterisation of eSports, the general discourse from traditionalists is that eSports should not be considered a sport as it strays too far away from the conventional ideas of sport, and playing video games doesn’t encapsulate the true notion of sports (Tjønndal, 2020). Sporting traditionalists such as Tjønndal (2020) have also argued that allowing eSports to be considered a professional sport would open the floodgates when considering other recreational activities for professional status, suggesting that if eSports are added to prestigious sporting events such as the Olympics, then that opens the door for even less distinguished events such as ‘beer-chugging’. However, eSports isn’t simply a ‘recreational activity’, eSports has grown exponentially to a world audience of approximately 500M and generated USD1.2B in 2019 (Cramner et al., 2021). The popularity of eSports has grown considerably since its implementation to the point where prize pools for winning teams/players have exceeded $20M, thus becoming more financially gratifying than some of the most popular sports in the world (Funk et al., 2018).
Artefact 5 – eSports Revenue Data
Tumblr media
(Gough, 2023)
Given the pop culture expansion that video games have had since the distribution of video game consoles, it is no surprise that eSports has become widely popular and heavily consumed by mass audiences. Considering how passionate and conservative sporting traditionalists are about sporting customs if they believe that eSports strays too far away from their precious sporting traditions, maybe they should consider removing the technological advancements that have furthered the facilitation of their favourite sports, such as instant replay, hawk-eye technology and data analytics. Improving technologies improves the sporting industry as well, eSports is here to stay and I’m sure that in a few years, the discourse surrounding eSports will ease, as people turn their attention and disapproval to the next innovation in the sporting industry.

Emerging Opportunities In The Online Gaming Space For Indian Entrepreneurs
For a long time, Indian games were considered children’s entertainment. Due to high hardware costs and limited digital penetration, the country has also missed the craze for PC and console games. However, due to the rapid spread of smartphones, changes in consumer behavior, low-cost high-speed Internet access, and more digital payments, India has established itself in the field of mobile gaming.
The pandemic has further accelerated this growth due to the lack of alternative offline entertainment options. Today's revenue is 136 billion rupees and 433 million players, and the market is expected to reach 290 billion rupees and 649 million players by 2025.
Investor interest in this field is also increasing. Nazara chose an IPO, MTG acquired PlaySimple for US$360 million, and WinZo raised US$65 million in Series C financing, all in 2021. As the ecosystem grows, it also opens up more opportunities for startups to take advantage of:
Midcore and Hardcore Games
Casual games help non-game players join the gaming trend. However, as these players mature, they seek deeper stories, more content, and advanced game mechanics. Mid-core game sub-genres, such as RPG (role-playing game) and MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena), provide a more immersive experience, and interest and expansion in this sub-genre are increasing.
The subgenre that won the hearts of the Indian masses is Battle Royale. The rise of games such as Garena Free Fire and PUBG (about 200 million players before being banned), and the subsequent proliferation of games such as FAU-G indicate that the market for such games is large and growing.
In addition, localized games (such as Bhai The Gangster for mobile devices and Raji for consoles and PCs) have obvious appeal, and these games were developed for Indian audiences. As India becomes more familiar with mainstream games and metaverse concepts, the rise of midcore is inevitable.
Social Gaming
Multiplayer games allow people to interact and compete digitally while having fun. Games like Roblox go one step further, launching an "experience platform" where friends can hang out, build a world and even raise pets. Even Gucci has a virtual store where users can purchase items for their virtual characters.
As users spend more time on digital platforms, they seek a social environment, which provides plenty of opportunities to integrate social elements across genres.
Gaming Publishers
India now has a large number of local game developers. However, the lack of commercial channels limits the influence of local and small-scale developers. This is where publishers step in and market to their target groups.
Since the app store democratized game distribution, developers have been able to publish games directly. However, this comes at the cost of some in-app purchases on the Google Play store. This also narrows the scope of effective marketing between development and app store listings.
Online games have a strong influence outside the first-tier cities, so Indian publishers are required to carry out relevant localized marketing to maintain diverse player participation even in changing trends.
Game Streaming
Users like streaming games for similar reasons as gamers: entertainment and social interaction.
Today, people trust platforms like YouTube, and creators like Tanmay Bhat popularize streaming by playing games like chess, and other games on their channel. PUBG players like Carry Minati and Team SouL have also gained recognition through streaming.
Game streaming company Loco recently raised $9 million to improve its technology and provide more interactive features. As e-sports is recognized as a sport by the Olympic Association of India, streaming media will develop further. This will promote gaming as a profession and strengthen the ecosystem.
Challenges
While online games are advancing by leaps and bounds, they also have their own setbacks. It is difficult for game developers to find outstanding talents. In addition, India’s gaming population is growing but fragmented, which poses challenges for distribution.
In addition, although the average income per paying user (ARPU) is increasing, it is much lower than in other countries. This has also led to the limited institutional capital deployed so far. The past five years have grown rapidly, mainly in casual games and real-money games. With the maturity of game players, the increase of ARPU through microtransactions, and the withdrawal of game companies, the industry is maturing. The next phase of growth in mid-core/hard-core games is expected.

Olympic Village for 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics

Village Targets Minimal Environmental Impact and Creates New Center of Activity in Porta Romana

Olympic Village at Porta Romanam, Milan
COIMA SGR and its partners Covivio and Prada Holding today revealed that Skidmore, Owings & Merrill will design the Olympic Village for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics as part of the updated Porta Romana railway yard master plan. SOM was selected to design the village following an international competition involving 27 groups comprised of 71 studios from nine different countries.
Developed by COIMA SGR and its partners in collaboration with the Milano-Cortina Foundation, the Municipality of Milan, and the Lombardy Region, the Olympic Village will transform the Porta Romana district, creating a sustainable urban community and offering a powerful new model for Olympic facilities to serve post-Olympic social goals. Thanks to innovative sustainability features, the village will target minimal environmental impact in accordance with NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) requirements.
Designed first and foremost to become an integral part of Milan’s urban fabric, the village encompasses a set of public green spaces, the transformation of two historic structures, and six new residential buildings that will serve Olympic athletes in the short term. Following the Olympics, the athletes’ homes will be reused for student housing; the park and railway side buildings near the Olympic Square will be used for affordable housing; and the Olympic Village Plaza will become a neighborhood square, with shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes planned at street level, along with outdoor space for farmers’ markets and other community events.

“The 2026 Olympic Village will represent a new urban laboratory for Milan, the first to be designed and built in its future configuration with spaces, functions and materials already designed for their conversion, meeting NZEB principles,” said Manfredi Catella, COIMA Founder & CEO. “The integrated district will be managed through an evolutionary digital platform similar to that being tested in the Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano (BAM) in Porta Nuova. The project represents our commitment to ESG through COIMA ESG City Impact, the first Italian closed-end investment fund with measurable objectives for the country’s sustainable regeneration, which will retain the Olympic district in its portfolio following its conversion into a student residence.”
“Rather than ceasing to be of use after the Olympics, the Porta Romana Olympic Village will ultimately become a vibrant, self-sustaining neighborhood built around the principles of social equity, environmental commitment, wellness, and inclusivity,” said SOM Design Partner Colin Koop. “The village adopts the rhythm of the area’s streetscape, creating a porous urban block with a variety of public spaces and communal anchors that will enhance Milan’s vibrant tapestry of ground floor experiences.”
image © SOM | Pixelflakes
The new buildings take architectural inspiration from the historic buildings of Milan, while featuring striking, contemporary materials and dramatic communal terraces. Shaded by vertical plantings, these terraces serve as bridges between the buildings, becoming signature gathering spaces and outdoor study rooms for students and lending the complex a sense of energy and life on every level. The integration of greenery within the outdoor areas will contribute to the neighborhood’s climate resilience, and also create space for urban farms that enable on-site food production.
image © SOM
The entire Olympic Village is designed according to the principles of a smart and sustainable city, creating a complex that is at once connected and self-sufficient. The village’s mechanical systems will tie in to the precinct’s loops, yet passive cooling strategies, solar panels, and rooftop gardens — among other features — will ensure that more than 30% of the energy utilized will be produced on site. Stormwater will be collected on site and reused, with a reduction in the use of drinking water by over 50% and a CO2 reduction of 40% for heating and cooling. In addition, the new buildings maximize the use of sustainable materials, from the mass timber structure of the residential buildings to low-embodied carbon facade materials.
The Olympic Village forms part of the broader Parco Romana project for which an updated master plan, developed following an extensive public engagement process, has been unveiled. The updated plan reinforces elements of the public space, such as the Central Park, eco-zones (green corridors that will be able to include public areas such as sports pitches, children’s play areas, or urban gardens), and a suspended forest to connect the eastern and western sides of the site, for which a feasibility assessment is underway. The volumes of the planned projects have now been distributed more evenly, improving the dialogue with the surrounding areas and providing more activation at ground level.
Construction of the Olympic Village is scheduled to be completed by July 2025.

*🇮🇳Facts about India🇮🇳*

The river is considered holy, and the city is renowned as a center for studying yoga and meditation. Temples and ashrams (centers for spiritual studies) line the eastern bank around Swarg Ashram, a traffic-free, alcohol-free and vegetarian enclave upstream from Rishikesh town.
Rishikesh is primarily famous for its spiritual importance. ... Rishikesh is the beginning of the famous Char Dham Yatra (Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath). There are a number of Ayurveda centres also where you can experience the ancient healing methods for body and mind.
The Bharat Mandir was established on the banks of the holy Ganges in around 12th Century by Guru Shri Shankaracharya. Inside the temple, there is an idol of lord Vishnu, made out of a single Saligram. Shri Shankaracharya also placed the Shri Yantra above the Vishnu idol.

*😳Why❓❓❓*
*Why Don't We Remember Being Babies?*
Virtually nobody has memories from very early childhood because at that age, our brains don't yet function in a way that bundles information into the complex neural patterns that we know as memories. This is called "semantic memory
Until sometime between the ages two and four, try you however, children lack "episodic memory" -- memory regarding the details of a specific event. Such memories are stored in several parts of the brain's surface, or "cortex." For example, memory of sound is processed in the auditory cortexes, on the sides of the brain, while visual memory is managed by the visual cortex, at the back. A region of the brain called the hippocampus ties all the scattered pieces together. The hippocampus, tucked very neatly in the middle of our brain, is responsible for pulling those all together and tying them. At the age of seven, children could still recall more than 60% of the recorded events, but children who were just a year older remembered only about 40 %
The reason we don’t remember being babies is because infants and toddlers don’t have a fully developed memory. But babies as young as six months can form both short-term memories that last for minutes, and long-term memories that last weeks.

🤔 *How it works* ⁉
*How the Telephone Works.*☎️📞
When a person speaks into a telephone, the sound waves created by his voice enter the mouthpiece. An electric current carries the sound to the telephone of the person he is talking to. ... When a person talks into the telephone, the sound waves strike the diaphragm and make it vibrate.
When two telephones are connected, analog voice data is transmitted over the copper wires of the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). The voice data is then converted into electrical signals which are eventually routed in the switching centers. Finally, a connection is made and communication is possible.
The number dialled on a landline is routed via the telephone wire to the Electric cross connect system at the local telephone exchange. This system has a direct mapping for the number dialled to the location of the called person. It simply switches the call to subsequent cross connects till the destination is reached.
Something that converts energy from one form to another is called a *transducer* . The loudspeaker in a phone works in the opposite way: it takes an incoming electrical current and uses magnetism to convert the electrical energy back into sound energy you can hear.

*Alexander Graham Bell* , best known for his invention of the *telephone* , revolutionized communication as we know it. His interest in sound technology was deep-rooted and personal, as both his wife and mother were deaf.
🛕 *VEDIK GNAN*
*NARASIMHA* Avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself as a semi-man, semi-lion in this world. The king of demons (asuras), Hiranyakasyapa, wanted to become immortal and wanted to remain young forever. To this end, he meditated for Lord Brahma and because of his severe penance, the gods were frightened and asked Brahma to pacify the king. Brahma was impressed by his austerity and granted him a wish. HiranyaKasyapa wished that he be neither killed by a man or beast, nor in daylight or at night and neither inside or outside a building. Having obtained the wish he considered himself the supreme God and frobade all worship of gods by anyone.
But his son Prahlada, was an ardent devotee of Vishnu. This enraged Hiranyakasyapa very much. He ordered numerous ways to kill Prahlada including asking his sister Holika to sit with Prahlada in the fire. But everytime Prahlada escaped unhurt. Enraged, once he asked Prahlad to show him the Lord Vishnu. Prahlad said, "He is everywhere". Further enraged, Hiranyakasyapa knocked down a pillar, and asked if Lord was present there. Lord Vishnu then emerged as a half lion, half man from the pillar which was neither inside the house nor outside, and the time was evening, neither night nor day. He then killed Hiranyakasyapa thus saving the life of his devotee Prahlada.

Athletic Footwear Market Worth $95.14 Billion By 2025 | CAGR: 5.1%
Tumblr media
The global athletic footwear market size is expected to reach USD 95.14 billion by 2025, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc., progressing at a CAGR of 5.1% during the forecast period. The market is estimated to witness considerable growth over the forecast period owing to growing global population, rising awareness regarding health benefits, and active participation in fitness activities and global sports events.
Major global sports events such as Olympics, ICC Cricket World Cup, National Basketball Association (NBA) league, FIFA World Cup, and The Championships, Wimbledon play an imperative role in fuelling demand for athletic footwear. It has been observed that the market witnessed a higher growth rate during the years when Olympics (both summer and winter) took place, that is during 2012, 2014, and 2016, owing to training and participation of aspiring as well as established athletes and sportspersons.
Athletic footwear is typically made up of three primary components, namely upper section, mid sole, and outsole. Major players, such as Adidas AG; Nike, Inc.; and Under Armour, Inc. are innovating upper section of shoes using the 3D printing technology.
The mid sole plays an important role as it is responsible for ensuring stability and providing cushioning to users. Prominent manufacturers have been focusing on enhancing the mid sole to ensure the comfort of athletes. For instance, Adidas AG adopted the Boost technology over the traditional Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA)-based technology. The Boost technology is based on using capsules of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), an elastomer possessing high abrasion rate, high flexibility levels, and longer life as compared to conventional EVA.

2024 Paris Olympics Aquatics Centre Building

Location: Saint-Denis, Paris, France
Aquatics centre and pedestrian overpass in Saint-Denis
The architectural team of VenhoevenCS and Ateliers 2/3/4/, in cooperation with Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France, Récréa, Dalkia and an extensive team of consultants, has won the competition to design the new Aquatics centre in Paris which will be completed for the Paris 2024 Olympic games. The design includes a new pedestrian bridge that connects it with the existing ‘Stade de France’. The bridge will be the new gateway to the Aquatics centre and the upcoming Eco neighborhood which will be created after the games.
This winning proposal, created by a passionate and highly engaged team of experts, sharing an inspiring dialogue with the client La Métropole du Grand Paris, will contribute to an unforgettable experience of the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. Even more important, it will lead to a building that offers an innovative and monumental Aquatics centre to the people in Saint-Denis: a place to learn how to swim, to practice sports, to relax and meet.
Healthy city district
This plan goes beyond environmental regulations and requirements. Sustainability and biodiversity are key in all aspects of the design. It is a modern and innovative sports complex surrounded by abundant vegetation that seriously contributes to a livable and healthy city district for the people in Saint-Denis. To also stimulate a healthy lifestyle after the Olympics, the building will be open and transparent and accommodate a wide range of sports and events, both indoor and outdoor.
Nature was the main inspiration for the design concept. Nature is continuously evolving and adapting to changing circumstances, resulting in harmonious and balanced ecosystems. The Aquatics centre also invites nature itself in the heart of the new ‘city-district-in-the-making’ of Saint-Denis. This very compact proposal creates room for one hundred trees that will be planted to improve the quality of life and air, stimulate biodiversity and create new ecological connections.
Impressive wooden structure
Wood, one of the quintessential bio-based construction materials, is used to create the main structure of this building. The design of the Aquatics centre features an impressive wooden roof, a suspended shape with minimal construction height that strictly follows the required minimum space for tribunes, people and sightlines, thereby minimizing the amount of air that needs to be conditioned during the coming 50 years.
By using wood for this monumental structure, the proposal doubles the required minimum percentage of bio-sourced materials. The Olympic arena under the roof, with tribunes on three sides, can host 5000 spectators around an innovative, modular and multifunctional competition pool.
90% Renewable or recovered energy and upcycled furniture
Energy consumption is one of the big challenges for swimming pools, due to water treatment and high temperature demands. By reducing the energy demand and creating a smart energy system, 90% of the needed energy can be provided with renewable or recovered energy. The solar roof will be one of the biggest solar farms of France and will cover 25% of all required electricity production, which is the equivalent of the electric power use of 200 households.
Water is both a key element of a swimming pool and one of the resources we should preserve most. With a very efficient water system we can seriously reduce the need of fresh water, re-use 50% of the remaining water and still guarantee enough very clean water for all purposes.
Upcycling was also a main design principle. All furniture in restaurants, bars and entrances is made out of wood waste coming from the construction site and other demolition sites. All tribune chairs are newly designed and made out of 100% recycled plastic collected from schools in Saint-Denis.
Livable neighborhood for the community
By gathering people around sports and leisure, the new Aquatics centre creates a livable neighbourhood that builds bridges between cultures and districts that make use of the facilities and surrounding public spaces of the Aquatics centre. This proposal also makes a literal connection, with a new pedestrian bridge that crosses the highway and connects the public spaces around Stade de France with the aquatic centre and the new heart of the future Eco neighbourhood of La Plaine Saulnier. Finally, this design also promises an innovative Aquatics centre supported by the community, with local associations and enterprises.
Sustainable design concept improves city life
The design for the new Aquatics centre for the Olympic Games 2024 is a balanced ecosystem in itself. It shows how sustainable design concepts can evolve in new architectural aesthetics that contribute to the improvement of the quality of life in our cities.
