ok so this doesn't really solve The Wall Problem but i kinda think the purposes are two-fold. the first bit mostly builds off of a hc i have for chakra on the whole, which is that there's kind of like an inherent resistance factor? probably it's in no small part because this is a cartoon (i can't speak on the manga as i haven't read any of it) but naruto characters are rarely if ever affected by their own jutsu (see also: chidori, sakura being able to break the ground with a single punch) and even with other people's jutsu, injury usually isn't as severe as you'd expect irl/as long as you can dodge the actual fire you won't get burnt, etc. given kakashi outright disperses a high level jutsu in the kakuzu/hidan fight, it definitely can be done intentionally, but i also like to think that jutsus just...naturally don't work as well against ninja, especially the highly trained ones, because of some kind of instinctive chakra response.

anyway that relates back to the wall thing because i think using chakra to stick to someone probably doesn't work very well, at least if they know what they're doing (and don't want to be stuck on(?)). i don't see why there couldn't be a fuunjutsu equivalent to this which could feasibly be placed on/under a wall to prevent ninja from just climbing up it like that.

the second part of why i could see having a wall would still be useful is that even if it can't keep people out it probably could be used to notify someone when someone enters when they're not supposed to. i haven't gotten that far watching yet, but i've seen a clip where sarutobi tells itachi that he'll leave the village barrier unchanged so itachi can sneak in. given obito and kisame also both manage to enter at other points, but appear to be noticed (again, im going off of clips here) relatively quickly i think that sort of thing would make sense to have as part of a ninja wall. it would also make sense for a prolonged jutsu like that to be fuunjutsu, so i guess tldr walls could work against ninja bc of fuunjutsu?

Yeah, part of it comes down to the fact that just because some defensive feature is less effective, doesn’t mean you should entirely get rid of it. There’s still plenty of value in some physical barrier.

I’m working off probably even less info than you - it’s been a LONG time since I really dug into the nitty gritty details provided in canon - but I wonder if there’s some element of uuuhhhhhh. Like you know how you dispel a genjutsu’s effect through manipulating your internal chakra system/rhythm? Maybe that’s what messes with contact from chakra attacks in a similar vein - if your chakra can disrupt foreign chakra, it weakens some of the energy impact.

And who really knows the full extent of what chakra use does to the human body. I love Maito Gai but also good lord the things he can do.

Anyways, fuinjutsu can then combine with some of these idea by having set rules for chakra interactions and reactions.

Honestly, a lot of my thoughts around all this was spurred by trying to think about what makes sense for the architectural development of buildings/structures like castles for the daimyo. If you’re a politically important individual but you don’t have personal offensive chakra capabilities, how the hell do you sleep well at night needing to trust that your social systems are stable enough to keep these magic shinobi from killing you and your entire bloodline.

Idk, I have a lot of thoughts about what it feels like to be someone without chakra living in the Naruto world and what the hell that does to social structures lol

I also find explosive reactive armor in the real world very funny, and I think the conceptual thought processes behind it deserve to exist in Naruto land too.

I was talking to a friend who lived in California for most of his life about what driving in the Shenandoah mountains is like. He mentioned he went there once as a Boy Scout and asked “When are we getting to the mountains????” As they were traveling in the mountain roads because he was so used to like…the Sierra Nevada which are significantly taller. There’s a relative 10,000 foot difference in elevation between the Sierras (~14,000) and the Shenandoah mountains (~4,000)
