Shadow the Hedgehog is unusual for Sonic characters in that, throughout the entire series prior to the first time he appears on screen, we know exactly where he was and what he was doing.

Like, Knuckles could've been anywhere on Angel Island, doing pretty much anything, and during Sonic 1, Big the Cat was probably chilling with Froggy, maybe? But the details of Amy's backstory do not extend one second earlier than "saw in the tarot cards that she was going to meet Sonic on the Little Planet" except for "has always been into mystical stuff." Tails was bullied until Sonic helped him, but we don't really know what he was doing. Eggman has a huge gap between "his cousin's death fifty years ago" and "the beginning of the first game". E-102 Gamma was disqualified because he hadn't been built yet. Sonic himself has a backstory which begins and ends with "was born on Christmas Island."

Shadow, though. We have the exact specifics.

only just realized that the place in IDW #11 where Starline starts restoring Eggman's memories (literally rebuilding him) is exactly where Gamma awakens for the first time, in the exact same machine

it's a pretty thematically apt location imo- SA1 being this modern version of Eggman's proper debut. That and Starline is literally walking in Eggman's footsteps, same path and framing and all.

This area being both where Gamma and IDW-Eggman's stories begin is a neat lil parallel. And the locale is befitting story-wise, given that the thing that makes Eggman finally remember who he is is Metal Sonic, who was also kept in the Final Egg

that and it probably explains why theres a suspiciously eggman-sized table for Starline to use-- the og e-series are already eggman-sized

Another detail that was impossible to translate is that the JP version of this cutscene is the first time Gamma ever uses his own pronoun ("Boku") rather than the one that was presumably programmed into him ("Watashi"), showing his sense of self, his identity.
