percy remembers his temper when they were younger, the anger that leaked out despite, she's sure, his best efforts. even as a teen she hadn't let him steamroll her, but she'd also quickly refused to rise to his bait, refused to let the flare of his temper set her off. it was half out of fear of acting like her stepmother, and half out of a self-made promise to give john at least one person in the world who didn't treat him with disdain or fear. it hadn't always been easy; she'd slipped up, because neither of them were perfect, but it had been worth it because she'd loved him. even when she'd gone off to college, even when she'd met felix in that coffee shop, there was some part of her that had always belonged to john.

she'd figured he would have found somebody by now, especially with how much he's grown, but here he is. and here she is, feeling as awkward and flustered as she had in high school when distrust and defenses first gave way to affection. percy smiles, laughs a little. "not to say i told you so," she says quietly, just for the two of them, "but i did say you weren't your dad. and i was right." she's only half-joking.
