New Video: The Dill's Groovy "Lover Baby" @dylanhudecki
Dylan Hudecki is a Hamilton, Ontario, Canada-based singer/songwriter and guitarist and grizzled Hamilton music scene vet, best known for stints in bands like By Divine Right and Junior Blue. Review: The Dill at The Casbah
Band: The Dill
Support: Opening for We Are The City and Closetalker
Venue: The Casbah, Hamilton, ON
Date: Nov 4, 2018
When I first heard that The Dill was playing again at The Casbah — an intimate venue in Hamilton — on a Sunday, I felt disappointed knowing I was probably going to miss it. See, my soccer team plays on Sunday nights. But, thankfully this Sunday our game was scheduled to end earlier than usual. And it became obvious that I couldn’t miss this show when I bumped into the band at a red light on my way to soccer.
I first met Dylan “The Dill” Hudecki earlier this year after seeing an intimate performance by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. We discussed many hard-hitting subjects over drinks but didn't talk much about his music. But what he didn't brag about that night was the upcoming release of what some described as "the most ambitious album ever to come out of Hamilton…"
The Dill's Greetings From dropped this summer and featured 12 songs chosen from a pool of 52 that Dylan wrote and recorded with friends. His friends, however, happen to include some of the biggest names in Canadian indie-rock. Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene), Luke Lalonde (Born Ruffians), Sarah Harmer (Weeping Tile), and Max Kerman (The Arkells).
But tonight, The Dill played in support of "We Are The City," who released an album that night. Because it was an opening slot, the setlist only included seven songs — but the band made the best of their time and managed to dazzle everyone present, including Dylan's mother, who was in the audience.
"Did I Drop the Ball or Miss The Boat" was the opening song. A twangy start to the show, slowly building up in tempo. "Our Favourite Song," "Mountain Lion," and "Hold Me Up Don't Let Me Down" set a cool retro mood that was complemented by a simple, yet thoughtful stage set up with string lights. The atmosphere was as laid back as the band's imagery — mostly leisure themed.
Dylan addressed the crowd of maybe 50-100 fans (it looked quite packed, considered it was early into the night), promising not to waste any time. While tuning his guitar, Dylan joked in contradiction: "No one should have to stay up past midnight on a Sunday. Unless rock & roll calls. And we must answer that call!"
"Conflict of Interest" marked a shift in the tone, with the drummer invoking a beat from a machine. Compared to the recording, the live version of this song was more in line with the rest of the band's sound — cleaner, yet dreamy but with no allusions to rap. I liked it better, but shhh.
A cover of the early-punkesque "Elevator" by Young Rivals got the crowd warmed up for the rest of the night — and finally the deep cut "I Don't Wanna Go" served the band's last song. Upbeat. Loud. Reminiscent of the early 2000's Canadian indie sounds. And with a title that could not have been more appropriate in describing how Dylan and the band felt at the moment. Pumped. Proud to rock & roll.
The three major shifts in sound and tempo emphasized The Dill's embrace of a multitude of different sounds and styles and kept the show interesting. I would say that the consensus amongst the audience was that we could have used a little more of The Dill, but two other bands were yet to rock the house with the promise to get everyone to bed on time.
