Just perfect).

Akbar Shahid Ahmed at HuffPost:
The Biden administration is aggressively pushing senators to bless continued U.S. weapons shipments for Israel ahead of a first-of-its-kind vote in Congress on the policy, HuffPost has learned ― and administration officials are suggesting lawmakers who vote against the arms are empowering American and Israeli foes from Iran to the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah, which the U.S. treats as terror organizations. HuffPost obtained a copy of talking points the administration is circulating on Capitol Hill ahead of a Wednesday vote on several tranches of military equipment that President Joe Biden wants to send Israel. The White House sent the document to multiple Democratic Senate offices on Tuesday, two Senate aides who requested anonymity to speak frankly told HuffPost.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is also privately pressing senators to endorse the ongoing flow of military equipment to Israel, according to one of the aides. Several influential senators ― among them Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Tim Kaine (D-Va.) ― are urging colleagues to vote for legislation that disapproves of Biden’s arms deals. They cite Israel’s use of American support to cause massive civilian casualties and its severe restrictions on humanitarian aid, which they say violate U.S. and international law. The effort is serious enough that the White House has launched a pointed pushback. “Disapproving arms purchases for Israel at this moment would … put wind in the sails of Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas at the worst possible moment,” the document from the Biden administration reads. The document additionally appears to endorse continued fighting despite the administration’s public narrative that it is seeking settlements to end the deadly Israeli military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon.
“Now is the time to focus pressure on Hamas to release the hostages and stop the war,” it reads, referring to the more than 100 hostages whom the Palestinian armed group continues to hold after they were captured during its brutal Oct. 7, 2023, attack inside Israel. “Cutting off arms from Israel would put this goal even further out of reach and prolong the war, not shorten it,” it continued. The document also echoes a frequent talking point deployed by Israel’s defenders to deflect attention from its conduct: “Hamas can stop the war tomorrow by simply releasing hostages, starting with older men, including an elderly American citizen, Keith Siegel, and women, young and old.”
[...] On its face, the Wednesday vote is a rebuke of only three specific sets of air and ground munitions Biden wants to send the Israelis. It’s a relatively minor package compared to the billions in equipment he has shipped to them over the past 13 months. And it’s near-certain the legislation blocking the weapons would not pass, as Republicans and ardently pro-Israel Democrats oppose it. But the vote represents the first time ever that Congress is even considering barring an arms shipment for Israel. And coming in the dying days of the Biden presidency, with lawmakers free of the pressure of an imminent election, it represents a chance for Democratic senators to symbolically break with their party leader’s policy. Anti-war legislators and activists have been pushing to win as many votes as possible for the bills, setting a goal of securing upward of 20 votes to include around half of the Senate Democratic caucus and signify growing skepticism on Capitol Hill.
Two previous efforts to get senators on the record questioning the war received the endorsement of 18 and 12 Democratic senators, respectively, for proposals from Van Hollen to require greater scrutiny of how countries use U.S. weapons and from Sanders to mandate a State Department report on Israel’s human rights record. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) provided a lone Republican vote for the Sanders pitch. On Tuesday evening, the Times of Israel first revealed the administration was lobbying senators to vote against the bills, citing two U.S. officials. Notably, the officials were unnamed and the document obtained by HuffPost is not an official White House “Statement of Administration Policy” or SAP, the standard format for guidance to legislators on pending legislation. “The fact that they didn’t send a formal SAP is a sign that they are too ashamed to put these arguments on White House letterhead,” a Senate aide argued. The effort aligns Biden’s team and Schumer with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which has run ads opposing the legislation.
[...] Sanders seemingly predicted anxieties around Iran would be referenced to undercut the bills. In a Washington Post op-ed published on Monday, he wrote: “There are those who will argue that blocking these offensive arms sales will only embolden terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as their sponsors in Iran. I would respectfully disagree.” Sanders continued, “You do not effectively combat terrorism by starving thousands of innocent children. You do not effectively combat terrorism by bombing schools and hospitals. You do not effectively combat terrorism by turning virtually the entire world against your country.”
Shameful to see.
The White House is aggressively pushing Democratic Senators to vote for the continuation of sending weapons to Israel Apartheid State’s genocidal activities.

The last remaining class of pre-revolutionary locomotive operated by FdeC is the EMD G8. A total of 51 of these lightweight machines made their way to the Ferrocarriles Consolidados de Cuba, a private company, before being taken over by the newly post-revolutionary Ferrocarriles de Cuba. EMD's G8s, along with their G12s and G16s formed their first formal tranche of export locomotives. These boxy machines were broadly similar internally to their switcher models, and were available with several options - rounder cabs for closer clearances, MU hookups for duties too heavy for just one locomotive, and even specialty, one-off options. Australia, in particular, was a hotbed for the latter, with Clyde Engineering's G8s and G12s for the states of Victoria and New South Wales, plus the then-british colony of Hong Kong, being the only G-series locomotives with walkways around the body. G8s generally are light, low-maintenance machines, and Cuba's units are no different. While the remainder of pre-revolutionary American equipment on national rails was sidelined or scrapped due to the embargo (Several early GE switchers do still exist on various sugar plant networks, including a pair of U9Bs), Cuba's EMD G8s have soldered on, although as of the 2020s, only around 15 are active. The main casualties are the traction motors, which move the wheels and make the engines go - as most EMD secondhand parts aren't in countries Cuba can trade with, this inevitably ends up leading to those dying fist. However, as of 2023, there was hope. According to a recent mailing list post, a supplier for these components was found in Mexico, and several replacement kits have been shipped over. Only time will tell if this buys these remarkable machines a new lease on life.

Komi Can't Communicate Volumes 24 & 25 by Tomohito Oda Review
Tumblr media
Plot
It's White Day! Traditionally, guys give girls a gift to thank them for their Valentine's Day chocolate. But the boys of Itan High are putting their own spin on the holiday, with interesting results. And while Tadano might be giving Komi and Manbagi a rather staid present, the question he wants to ask Komi is anything but!
Komi is in her final year of high school, and that means she's running out of time to achieve her goal of making 100 friends! She starts off strong on the first day of classes, but a cynical new classmate's bitter outlook soon sparks a school-wide battle royale. Can Komi make a new ally in the tranches, or will pessimism win the day?
Discussion
I've said it before and I'll say it again- I ADORE THIS SERIES. Tadano and Komi are absolutely adorable- the aquarium date is a definite highlight of the series. Komi's father tested Tadano to determine if he was good enough for Tadano, and it was Tadano's time to shine. Tadano being Tadano, he not only passed the test but won over Komi's father. I also like that we got to see more of Komi's father's personality- for a good chunk of the manga and even the anime (I'm dying for new episodes!), he was the epitome of "living in the shadows" and the strong, silent character.
Volume 25 was pretty good- it was nice to see the teenagers tap into their inner child (I know they're still kids, but you know what I mean). It was nice to see some of the recurring characters from other volumes make an appearance and be more active in the story.

大家好! While the genocide in Gaza continues, Palestinians are telling the world their stories of resilience. I'm sharing some of them so that more voices can be heard. Meals are basic in the area - flat bread and food relief they receive from humanitarian aid agencies. Many of them are very skinny because they don't have enough to eat. These people are making the most of what little they have during a period of intense hardship and yet their eyes are full of kindness, their smiles full of warmth. It's no wonder that humanitarian aid volunteers and workers are so amazed by their strength and courage.

Deepavali was a public holiday. Pa and I visited a popular Japanese grill for the first time. They do serve meat, but we were most interested in their fish. We shared okra and brinjal skewers, gindara shioyaki (grilled cod seasoned with salt) and unagi shirayaki (grilled eel seasoned with sea salt). By opting for shioyaki and shirayaki, both dishes were less salty than the versions that come with sauces. There was plenty of food and it was so yummy, both of us polished off everything, including our rice. I was happy to see Pa enjoy our nutritious, moderately healthy meal. After that, we had a chat over fragrant local coffee.

MI told SC and me about a new fish soup stall which opened at a coffee shop near the office, so we went to try their food. Besides standard batang (mackerel), they serve hong ban (red garoupa and chang yu (pomfret). The last is my favourite fish and I ordered it with thick bee hoon (vermicelli). Those large, thick chunks of fish were so fresh and tender! There was also a lot of bee hoon, a slice of savoury fish cake with veggie bits, lots of sliced ginger and vegetables at the bottom of the bowl. The broth was clear, light and not too salty. This was SO delicious, I'm definitely returning to have it again as well as try the other fish!

MS and I caught up on a rainy afternoon. We wanted red meat to keep warm, so we visited a Hokkien restaurant which specialises in hearty comfort food. We ordered pig's stomach and fish maw soup, oyster and Iberico pork omette, bittergourd with Iberico pork and steamed egg custard and a bowl of rice each. Large chunks of springy fish maw and pig's stomach added tons of flavour to the peppery broth, which was milky thanks to lots of collagen. There were generous portions of plump juicy oysters in the fragrant omelette. As for the bittergourd, OH MY WORD, this was DIVINE to the max! The pork was tender, the egg smooth and the gravy heavenly with rice. The meal was so delicious, I immediately texted LL, my expat friend from China, about this restaurant. We'll come here when we catch up again.

Heartwrenching scenes and anguished cries of grief coming out of Gaza have many of us teary. Israel and US politicians may gloat at so much Palestinian suffering. Elsewhere in the world, we do not; our hearts go out to them instead. Everyone can relate to the pain of losing a loved one; we can only imagine how magnified this pain is when the loss is due to Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza. Over 43,000 Palestinians have died and over 102,000 wounded, many of them innocent civilians. I'm so glad my country will deliver our fifth tranche of aid to Gaza. I've not seen this level of devastation and suffering, ever. And it really tugs at my heartstrings. 下次见!
