Hey guys, I have some fun news to share with you all! 👀🎸🎥

I have teamed up with The Theatre Kid on YouTube (who apparently doesn’t have Tumblr lol) and I made a cool Sing Street NYTW mini documentary kinda like the mini documentary I made for DWSA! The Theatre Kid let me use a lot of footage from their past Sing Street videos and I did the rest of the editing and finding other videos and audios to put in. It should be up on DWSA Videos by tonight or tomorrow!

Again, just like the other one, it’s just for fun and it’s NOT an official documentary by any means, I do not profit off this channel so I’m not making any money off of the borrowed videos, and all the videos and audios will be credited to their original owners! It’s a really short mini doc, I probably could’ve added a whole twenty more minutes of Broadway shutdown content and the effects it had on the industry, along with the touching memorials for Broadway actors who passed due to Covid or during the shutdown. Maybe I’ll save all that for another time. I do feel like making these unofficial documentaries is a fun way to produce content, so this might be the second of many, or maybe it will inspire a whole new era for the DWSA Videos Channel! I’m thinking about a rebrand that will be more inclusive to other musicals that I create content for (hit me up if anyone’s got any ideas lmao.)

EDIT: That being said, I changed by YouTube name to “Broadway Fan Videos” which is just a temporary horrible name until I come up with something better.

Anyway, definitely watch it if you love Sing Street/Broadway, or if you’re interested in the whole Broadway shutdown situation and how the creative team and cast of Sing Street overcame the challenges of the pandemic to raise a ton of money for a great cause in a revolutionary way!!

It was a bittersweet project to work on, because it makes me sad to think that after all this time there’s still no Sing Street on Broadway, but I’m super proud of what this cast did Off-Broadway and the impact they made during the shutdown while they were all apart.

I always knew it existed, but one day on a long car drive I just decided to sit down and listen to it, and then everything clicked.

No, sadly. The most recent performance in my area was a high school that production last year -- it was a big deal but I could not make it.

3. Dream role/character you relate to most

I would literally kill to play Ilse! Unfortunately most of her songs are right over my first passaggio rip

For character I relate to the most? Some weird combination of Wendla’s naïveté and Melchior’s pretentious bitchiness.

4. Favorite male character

Hanschen — there’s something so satisfying when you see him done right on stage (even though it’s rare).

5. Favorite female character

Ilse, but I feel like Anna and Thea are under appreciated.

6. Deaf West Revival or Original Broadway Cast?

OBC laid the groundwork, obviously, but DWSA all the way! I’m actually also partial to the Almeida production (unpopular opinion, I know) because the technical and design elements just give it its own hauntingly beautiful identity that is totally unique

It’s about the passage of time, of the kids moving from one phase of their lives to another. They’re tapestries of their struggles and desires and dreams and guilt that they’ll always have, and they sing of everything they’ve known and the idealized future they hope to come. It’s a summer they might not see, but the seasons are changing anyway.

when i was really into hamilton in like 2016 jonathan groff was white boy of the month for a while and i was consuming all the groff content that i could and i came across that video of him talking about when he fucked up left behind. and then i listened to left behind and cried and read the wiki page and watched the obc boot and then i woke up here

i've been in love with wendla since i laid eyes on her and i would die to play her. im obsessed with her, she's got so much more depth than people realize and that was cut during the transition from play to musical fuck you s*ter and i would love to bring that to my rendition of her. and i was also assaulted when i was her age, i was also suicidal, i was also confused af and my mom was not helpful, i also wanted to be loved so badly, i just see a lot of my teenage self in wendla. i related to her so much when i first saw the show and that's a big reason i got so obsessed with it.

4. Favorite male character

prob moritz or hanschen. they are 2 sides of the same dramatic ass coin. they also have daddy issues and are gay like girl me too.

all of them? wendla holds a special place in my heart but like. there is so much to love about all of them even anna and thea who we know almost nothing about have the building blocks of great characters. i've always loved combining what we know about the characters from both the musical and the play to make more complete characters especially because s*ter cut so much of the girls characterization bc he's a sexist pos fuck you and i def do that with anna and thea.

So deaf west spring awakening is in my eyes a perfect revival and so artfully done so I reigns as “best version” imo.

BUT OBC has such a “kids rocking out in their garage band” energy to it ?? Where the show is so fresh and new and scary. And the energy is so grounded in nostalgia and I think it’s really special 🤧

YES !! I plan on doing a lot more but I drew a lot of Moritzs and Melchiors back in 2018 or so 😅

I really want to cosplay from spring awakening,, illse’s OBC costume is so pretty💔 and I have a mighty need to cosplay Moritz for gender-y and kin reasons 😅

I always sing along with Moritz’s part but both are so beautiful, best characters my sweet children

I would watch DWSA word of your body reprise RELIGIOUSLY (for totally straight person reasons) the revival does a great job taking a scene that was mostly played for laughs and make the characters seem much more grounded and whole. 💕

yes….. touch me is a great song but my junk is one of my favorite scenes in the show it’s so silly and crazy and I love it smm

Okay, the song of purple summer is the kids singing about how they will carry with them their struggles and sing of this idealized perfect world that will someday be real because love will outlive hate and prejudice. There is one day going to be a world where no one will be ashamed to love and be loved and everything will be beautiful, even if it isn’t now.

Let me preface this by saying, with all due respect, that I personally don’t care for Ride the Cyclone (absurdist-style theatre isn’t really my cup of tea) — however, I noticed a rather funny coincidence. In a TikTok video (see below) Kathryn Gallagher reminisces with Krysta Rodriguez, Alex Wyse, and Alex Boniello about a line in “My Junk” that they sang differently while the Deaf West Spring Awakening was at the Wallis Center:

Some commenters noted the humor in the fact that Boniello remembered the line as “I like crack,” given his portrayal of Connor Murphy (a drug addict) in Dear Evan Hansen.

Interestingly, the coincidence that I picked up on was the fact that the line in “My Junk” which the cast sung instead of “I lie back” was in fact “I like cats,” as amusedly recalled by Alex Wyse — who, similar to Boniello, also played a cat devotee: Ricky Potts in Ride the Cyclone.

learning asl alone without any classes is so difficult. i hit a road block in my learning and stopped practicing but im still glad of what i know and still remember. i would be impressed with anyone for learning even the most basic of things. the intake stage for that language is practically non-existent online and i was so lucky to be obsessed with dwsa at the time bc thats pretty much all i had. the ability to rewatch these videos so many times in one day really benefited me.

and even then a lot of that isn’t conversational. just words you pick up here and there.

idk if you're still here, but if you are, are you still accepting video transcripts from your SA Captions List? totally ok if not but I wanted to check before I went through the effort of making a whole transcript and then having nothing to do with it :)

Hi, I'm sort of still here. I am mostly still accepting transcripts although I would need the transcript to be timecoded.

I am currently unable to splice non-timecoded transcripts into timecoded ones because of health issues with my hands (this is why I haven't been captioning).

I know this makes it harder for volunteers to help, but I am for the foreseeable future unable to set transcripts to time and add them as captions. So files need to already be timecoded for me to be able to add the file to a video.
