ROSS POLDARK, DEMELZA POLDARK, CAROLINE ENYS, and DWIGHT ENYS from POLDARK

Justification:
"My mom and I just like to say that they're all married to each other. I mean, they act like spouses. Ross fucking dove into the ocean to get back to France after being kicked out and having his life threatened if he went back to save Dwight's life. Whenever they're separated from their spouses, Ross and Caroline latch onto each other basically as platonic replacement spouses and Dwight and Demelza do the same. Ross and Demelza painstakingly planned a secret wedding for Dwight and Caroline, and then helped them plan a public one. Ross saved Dwight from his PTSD, and Caroline saves Demelza from creeps at parties. Sometimes a family is a husband, a wife, a husband, a wife, a son, a daughter, and their maid/aunt" - Anonymous

Duty (update!)
A long overdue spring visit to Nampara!
Demelza has some private musings, finds herself with an unusual problem (a surfeit of brisket), and hosts a tea party that doesn't quite go off as planned.
Read Chapter 48 ("Research") here.
Read Chapter 49 ("Every Uneventful Day") here.
Read Chapter 50 ("Bout") here.
Sorry for the delay between postings. Two more chapters should be up soon! Thanks for following this little tale!

The Characters From Poldark: An Overview
After making that last Poldark post a month ago, I started reading Winston Graham's books. Needless to say, I got obsessed. I've just finished The Angry Tide a few days ago and started reading The Stranger from the Sea immediately right after. I'm still in the middle, but I'm kind of missing the vibe of the first seven books. Maybe it's because I'm already familiar with the story, thanks to the TV show. But I'm loving Jeremy and Clowance so far!
The Poldark books are like a drug to me; even if I'm dead tired after work, I try to find the time to read even a chapter or two before going to sleep. It's that addicting! Graham's writing was too good. I love his prose and how he gets the time period and characters. In more ways than one, the characters are much more lovable in the novel than in the TV show (don't get me wrong, I still like the BBC show!) The Poldark books can be fairytale-like, but so much grittier and darker. As the books progress, the story gets more political, which can be confusing, especially if you're not familiar with the history. Sometimes, I have to research a little bit to understand the background (especially in The Stranger from the Sea where they talk a lot about King George's madness, as well as Napoleon).
In this post, I share some of my thoughts about some of the Poldark characters (both in the TV show and books). This is not exactly like a review or in-depth analysis, just some rambles that came to me while reading the books or watching the show. If you haven't finished the books or show, be aware that I'll be talking about spoilers!
Ross Poldark

The most problematic man ever. Okay, maybe not, but there are so many times I want to throw my Kindle out the window every time he says or does something stupid (almost always at the expense of Demelza). Ross is not as annoying in the books as he was in the TV show, thankfully. Imagine my surprise when I realized he didn't say that crappy line about "playing the scullery maid" to Elizabeth at that Christmas party in Season 2. His apology to Demelza after spending that night with Elizabeth in the books was also much more sincere. And I love that he actually said, "I'm sorry" because (remind me if I'm wrong) he never said so in the show. Yes, we know he regretted it but I never felt he was sorry because he never really expressed it.
Nevertheless, Ross is still a pretty good character, albeit flawed. I like the way he fights for what he believes in and goes above and beyond for those less fortunate. His passion for his people—not only restricted to his miners or employees—is something to be admired at. He's not a good husband, but he's a decent person. He tries to be the hero all the time, but alas, he can't have it all.
And yes, I admit that maybe I can't truly hate Ross because I love Aidan Turner and his portrayal of the character. After reading the books, I've really come to appreciate Turner's performance even more. He just gets the brooding, tortured side of Ross.
My Favorite Ross Moment: Is there? Just kidding; he did have some good moments. You might think my favorite moment is a Ross/Demelza scene (I still honestly think about the stocking scene at random times of the day), but it's actually his impassioned speech during his trial in Season 2. Turner was on fire in this episode and really brought out the best of Ross.
Demelza Poldark

A ray of sunshine. The heart and soul of Nampara (hell, the rest of Cornwall). My favorite character. Demelza gets a lot of bad luck in the course of the series, but she always perseveres. She never fails to look at the bright things in life, and I admire her so much for that. Demelza and Ross's marriage suffers a lot in the show and books, but I've never once doubted their relationship. They're the perfect match for each other. Beyond the romance, she's also an understanding friend, a kind sister, and a warm mother.
Her personality in the show didn't wasn't really that different in the books, in my opinion, so I love both interpretations. Maybe the only change that ticked me off was her affair with Hugh Armitage. The show implied that she only slept with Hugh because Prudie told her that she saw Ross kiss Elizabeth at the church, but in the books, I feel like she didn't mind the kiss that much. Instead, she has an affair with Hugh because she wants to and has true affection for Hugh. I hated the fact that the show had to resort to a petty love triangle or jealousy for that to happen. Maybe it draws in more viewers, but honestly, it's a little shallow.
Eleanor Tomlinson was wonderful as Demelza. I've said before that they mixed up the hair color of the women in Poldark (in the books, Demelza is dark-haired, Elizabeth is blonde, and Caroline is a redhead), and I tried to imagine Tomlinson playing Caroline, but I simply couldn't. She's ingrained in my brain as Demelza now.
My Favorite Demelza Moment: Where to begin?! When she helped Verity and Andrew find each other again? When she tried to help Pascoe's bank when they were having problems? Or perhaps when she punched Ross after spending the night with Elizabeth. All these are great, but my personal favorite Demelza moment is when she sang "I'd Pluck a Fair Rose" at the Christmas dinner in Season 1. I know, this seems a bit minor, but I thought this was the beginning of Demelza's transformation as the Mistress of Nampara, gaining her confidence, as well as Ross's love. (And yes, I have this song on repeat on Spotify.)
George Warleggan

Debbie Horsfield gets a lot of flack for this adaptation (or so I've read in comments, from Reddit to Tumblr), but one of the changes she made that I liked was George's character. In the books, he's a scheming villain who will stop at nothing to destroy Ross and everything he holds dear. You know, the average bad guy. But I loved him in the show, though. Maybe it's because of Horsfield's writing, which humanized George, or Jack Farthing's nuanced performance. Farthing is actually one of my favorite actors in the show, all because he gave George so much heart, despite him being ruthless.
Also, I never really thought he loved Elizabeth in the books; instead, he only sees her as a prized possession, another trophy he gets for his status. But in the show, I can actually see his love for her. This is more apparent in Season 5 (which is not adapted from the books), but we can actually see his real feelings for Elizabeth in the earlier seasons as well! I've read that Books 8-12 focus more on the kids, but I do hope I get to see more of George and Ross's rivalry. It's a bit rundown, but I really love it when they have a little showdown.
My Favorite George Moment: His beef with Aunt Agatha is one of my favorite things in the show and books. So yes, my fave George moment was when he told Aunt Agatha that she's not 99, but 97. It's so petty and cruel of him—and Agatha was so right at retaliating by implying Valentine's not his son.
Elizabeth Warleggan

I've come to realize that many fans don't like Elizabeth. Yes, she's a thorn in Ross and Demelza's relationship, marries the villain George, leads on Ross while still being married to Francis, forces her cousin Morwenna to marry someone she doesn't love, and so on and on. But in the end, I can never really hate Elizabeth. She doesn't have a lot of scenes in the books, but in the show, Heida Reed played her as sympathetic and kind albeit weak. I never really questioned Elizabeth's actions because I always remind myself that this is probably what women in her status would do in the past. If you were widowed and broke, wouldn't you marry the first rich guy who proposes to you for your family's own good? Even if it's the guy who your first love hates the most.
After marrying George, she resented Ross and Demelza a lot... but, in her perspective, she was jilted by Ross. After they slept together, she postponed the wedding, (stupidly) hoping for Ross to come after her, but of course, he didn't. I can't blame her for waiting for him, though; that was Ross's fault for ignoring her. I do admit it was wrong of her to tell Ross about her feelings while married to Francis, though. And for forcing Morwenna to marry someone she doesn't love.
My Favorite Elizabeth Moment: In Season 3, when she swore in the Bible that Valentine is George's son (and in turn, making him swear that he won't suspect her anymore). Reed (and Farthing!) were incredible in that scene, but I just like how Elizabeth controlled the narrative in that moment. She's passive on most occasions, but she is determined to make George believe that Valentine is his son).
Francis Poldark

I was debating whether I should include Francis in this or not... After all, he's been dead for a long time, and I don't remember much what happened to him. And frankly, I don't really care much about his character (although his death is an important event for the other characters). I didn't hate Francis; however, he was just meh for the most part. In the first season, he suffered much with the responsibilities he earned after the death of his father, as well as losing his sister to a man whom he thought was a menace. Thankfully, his character had a change of heart in the second season.
I've got to say, though, that Kyle Soller is a terrific actor, and I missed him a lot in the later seasons.
My Favorite Francis Moment: When he came clean to Demelza about revealing the shareholders to George in Season 2... right before he died. I'm glad that he was able to redeem himself in the end.
Dwight Enys

Another one of my favorite characters! Just like Ross, Dwight cares so much for people and treats everyone fairly, no matter their station in life. He even tried to stay behind a prison camp because he wanted to take care of the people. But unlike Ross, Dwight is much more level-headed, gentler, and doesn't act on impulse... which makes me like him a bit more.
Luke Norris is also a very strong actor. He gets to show off his acting chops when he gets back from Paris and when his daughter Sarah dies (which is one of the saddest things that ever happened in this show). He also shared wonderful chemistry with Gabriella Wilde, who played Caroline. I like that their relationship was explored a lot in the series; they weren't just side characters that the writers put in random moments of the show, they were truly part of the show.
My Favorite Dwight Moment: Definitely not when he slept with a married woman. But he still gets a lot of good moments in the show, from being the voice of reason when Ross (stupidly) duels Adderley to helping George when mourning for Elizabeth. But my favorite one was when he stayed behind to warn Ross about the ambush, jeopardizing his elopement with Caroline. It's just one of the moments when we get to see Dwight being selfless.
Caroline Enys

I get that some people do not like Caroline; she's very brash, sarcastic, and, at times, spoiled. But she's one of my favorite characters in the show. Perhaps because she's the most modern one and I relate to her very much (although I am not an heiress... unfortunately). She doesn't show it a lot, but she cares so much for her family and friends. That's what makes her the best match for Dwight. They're somewhat like a reverse Ross and Demelza. And speaking of Ross, the book surprised me with how flirty they got with each other! She kisses him twice—and although there was no romance meant in that (if I remember correctly, that was when he went to save Dwight in Paris and she kissed him for luck and gratitude), she did once suggest that they sleep together. I'm sure that was one of her normal tactless quips, but even so, I was taken aback!
Still, I like Caroline more in the show because Gabriella Wilde was incredible in the role. She played the spoiled heiress so well, yes, but she gave her so much empathy and compassion in the show. Her heartbreaking scene when Sarah died destroyed me to bits, as well as the events after that. I'm so happy when she and Dwight reconciled. Also, I love that she became one of Demelza's most treasured friends. Their friendship is one of my favorite things in the show because they seem to just get each other, despite being two different people.
My Favorite Caroline Moment: When she paid off Ross's debts in secret. That was such a boss move and made me love her even more. There was absolutely no reason for her to do that, but only because she cared for Dwight and, as a result, Ross as well.
Drake Carne

The best man in the show? Well, yes! He's not perfect (he did run out of his own wedding, leaving poor Rosina heartbroken... yet again). Despite that, I like Drake, especially in the show. He's a bit annoying and more forward in the books, but in the show, he is gentler and kinder. And his hopeless devotion and unconditional love for Morwenna is so sweet. Their relationship is the only thing that makes Season 5 salvageable. Morwenna was damaged after her horrifying marriage to Osborne, and I liked that Drake didn't rush her into consummating their marriage. So far, they're still not in The Stranger from the Sea (will they make an appearance?! No, don't answer that; I hate spoilers), only that it was mentioned that they have a daughter. Beyond his romance with Morwenna, I love his brotherly relationship with Geoffrey Charles. He badly needed a good man in his life, and while his uncle is there (though I wouldn't say Ross is a good role model), I think Drake is the best guy for Geoffrey Charles.
Harry Richardson was also good as Drake; he's so charming in the role and easy to love. There are so many cases when I don't like new characters and actors that appear in the middle of the show, but he (and the rest of the new cast) effortlessly fit in with the rest.
My Favorite Drake Moment: Most of Season 5 Drake. Yes, that's not in the books, but I liked that the show explored the early days of their marriage. He was so gentle with Morwenna, it made my heart ache. The toad bit was stupid, to be honest, but it made me laugh with how it left George in a huff, so points to Drake for that anyway.
Sam Carne

Ah, Sam. He can be annoying at times, especially when he starts including his religious beliefs in literally every conversation, but... he grows on you. He's not one of my favorite characters, but I like his sibling relationship with Demelza and Drake. And his short-lived romance with Emma was pretty sad. It humanizes him in a way, making him see that he can't save everyone. Sam eventually marries Rosina. Which, to me, feels a bit weird. Sure, they do get along, but it just feels like they settled for each other because they were left by their respective partners.
Along with Harry Richardson, Tom York is also a fantastic addition to the cast. He doesn't get a lot of strong acting moments, but he's still a good actor and I enjoyed watching him.
My Favorite Sam Moment: Like I said, he doesn't get a lot of scenes, but I like Sam the best when he's being a Good Brother™ to Drake, especially in Seasons 3 and 4 when Morwenna is married to Osborne.
Morwenna Carne

I love Morwenna so much that it reminds me of that Stephanie Beatriz meme from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Morwenna's been through a lot—more than maybe most of the characters in the show. She married one of the sickest, horrifying characters I've ever come across (against her will, might I add), but nevertheless, she endured. She's a strong character, despite her demure tendencies. As I mentioned before, Season 5 is still worth watching for Morwenna and Drake. How she overcame her trauma from Osborne's abuse was very compelling to watch; it's realistic and makes me like her more. I also liked how she got to have a closure with John Conan, her first son. I'm sure she doesn't want anything from her Osborne's family, but you can't convince me that she doesn't care for John Conan.
In the books, Morwenna's always described in the book as "plain-looking," which irks me to no end because Ellise Chappell is literally one of the prettiest actresses I've ever seen. She's also a pretty good actress, and she was able to show off her range in Seasons 4 and 5.
My Favorite Morwenna Moment: When she stood up for herself against Osborne, even threatening to hurt John Conan if he tried to touch her again. I remember watching that scene for the first time and just howling and clapping for Morwenna.
*****
I would've loved to write more about the other characters like Verity and Prudie (especially Prudie in the show), but... I don't have a lot of feelings about them. Plus, they don't really move the story along, unlike the characters mentioned.
So, there you have it! Excuse me while I start watching the show again. Bye!

In My Life
Chapter 43

Thank you for your patience and support! This chapter was a bit stubborn for me and gave me a few fits. Hopefully you enjoy it!
Weeks later, Ross was starting to feel better, but not completely. There were those days that when he thought he was back to his normal self, then his body would laugh at him and say ‘oh no, not yet’ and he would have to lay down and take a nap. His last follow up appointments with his surgeon and pulmonologist, didn’t feel promising to him. They both told him that it would take months for him to fully recover and that his lungs were susceptible to pneumonia and asthma, so he would need to be careful especially in the winter months when the temperature gets to be bitter cold.
Today was one of his better days and he, Caroline and Dwight were going to go to the orchestra to watch his favourite cellist play! He was excited to be getting out of the house for something other than therapy or doctor appointments. He still hadn’t shopped for a replacement vehicle for his beautiful car that was totaled in the accident, so Dwight and Caroline were picking him up.
“Cheers mate, thanks for picking me up,” Ross said.
“No problem, mate. How are you feeling?” asked Dwight.
“Ah, today is a good day. I hope the doctors soon clear me to get back to work.”
“Ross, I keep telling you, don’t rush your recovery!”
“I know, I know, but it’s been over a month. I don’t know how much longer they’ll hold my job.”
Caroline looked at Ross questioning, “Surely they won’t fire you. It’s not your fault you were in an accident.”
Ross sighed, “Probably not, but the longer I wait to go back, the harder it will be to get back into the groove, and also, I was supposed to start working with a new secretary. Jenny was transferred to another department, so I’ll have that to deal with when I go back. Apparently they’ve already hired a new secretary for me.”
“Well, how about going back part time at first, the first week or so. That might be a good way to work your way up,” Caroline replied.
“Oh that’s a good idea Ross. Maybe you can tell your doctors that and they will let you go back to work sooner,” Dwight suggested.
“Yeah, I’ll call them tomorrow. Thanks Caro!”
“You’re welcome. At least with you being off we’ve been able to keep on with the wedding plans. Not too much longer now!”
“Yes, yes the wedding…” Ross’s tone changed.
Dwight looked up in the rear-view mirror, “Aw don’t tell me you’re getting cold feet now.”
Ross shook his head, “No, I’m just worried if we have enough time to pull it off, and I’m worried about mum. Da said her last labs didn’t come back very well, so I’m worried about that.”
“Well, we’re here now, so just concentrate on the concert, yeah?”
Ross smiled, “I’ve really been looking forward to this!”
Ross beamed with pride through the whole concert. His eyes never left Demelza and her cello. She’s worked so hard all of her life to get where she is and he was more than happy to be her supportive partner. The applause from the audience stirred him from his trance signaling the end of the concert. The lobby was full of happy patrons and music lovers. Soon Ross spotted a happy Demelza in a beautiful black gown with white sleeves and bodice. Ross kissed her and wrapped his arms around her and kissed her neck again, and whispered in her ear, “You were magnificent!”
Demelza pulled back from him, “Oh Ross, you can’t hear me over the other musicians!”
“Oh but I can, love. I can hear your cello through everyone else.” Demelza touched his face with her hand and gave him a long kiss.
“Alright you two, knock it off. I’m starving, let’s go get something to eat!” Dwight announced to the couple.
“Alright, alright!” Ross answered back, “Are you ready to go, my love?”
“Yes! I’m starved too!”
Ross kissed Demelza’s temple, “Well, let’s find a place for my favourite cellist!”
Caroline had already made reservations at a very nice restaurant for the two couples.
Demelza was looking around after they were seated at their table. “Caroline, I’ve never heard of this place. It’s that fancy. I thought we were just going to the pub?”
Caroline was skimming the menu, “Oh nonsense. I thought we all deserved to be treated after what Ross has been through, and after what you’ve been through seeing him through everything in the hospital. Plus, you look beautiful in your gown from the concert, too beautiful for a pub. And I’m paying tonight so feel free to get whatever you want.”
Ross and Dwight gave each other a look like they weren’t sure of who was paying for what.
“Darling, you don’t have to pay the bill, I can pay for the four of us,” Dwight whispered to Caroline.
Caroline didn’t bother looking at Dwight, “Darling I know you can, but I want to pay for it,” she finally looked him in the face and smiled. Dwight just smiled and went back to scanning his menu.
Ross cleared his throat as if to clear the air, “Well thank you Caroline, that’s very sweet of you.”
“You’re very welcome Ross. I am in the mood for some meat. I might get a steak for a change. What about you Demelza?”
“Oh gosh, I’m having a hard time choosing. Everything looks delicious. What about you Ross?”
Ross raised his eyebrows, “Actually, steak sounds good to me as well. You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you eat a steak, Demelza?”
Demelza smiled at Ross, “Probably not. I don’t usually order it because I can never get it cooked the way I like it, so I’ve kind of stopped ordering steak.”
Ross’s brows were furrowed again in question, “How do you like it cooked?”
“Well done.”
The other three gasped at the same time to Demelza’s statement, as if she had just said she had killed and buried a body! Then they all laughed.
Dwight chimed in, “I like my steaks medium well, but well done is a bit for me.”
Demelza shook her head, “Nope. Can’t do pink at all. It’s a nasty reflex from my childhood when my father made me eat raw meat, and now that I’ve got that image in my mind, I’m going to have pasta I think.”
Ross took her hand and kissed it, “I’m sorry, love. And you know what, I think I’m going to have pasta as well, with some shrimp.” Ross didn’t say that he changed his mind because he would’ve ordered his steak medium rare.
Finally the server came over and took everyone’s order. Dwight raised his glass, “I would like to make a toast to Ross and Dem and their upcoming nuptials and the start of a wonderful life together.” Everyone raised their glasses to the toast. Demelza and Ross leaned in and kissed after the toast.
Caroline couldn’t help herself with more wedding talk. “So Demelza, you have a fitting on Tuesday, do you want me to go along for that?”
“If you’d like. You don’t need to. Oh and Ross we need to go to Cornwall next week to meet with the caterer and the baker that is making our cake. So make sure you have that in your diary,” Demelza reminded Ross.
Ross pulled out his phone, “Yes, I have it down. I guess I should go back to work after that so I don’t have to ask for the time off. I feel bad that we aren’t going to have time off for a proper honeymoon.”
Demelza shook her head, “I’m not worried about a honeymoon at all. I just want you healthy and on the dance floor.”
Caroline smiled at the couple when she remembered, “Oh I’ve sent out all of the invitations, but I wasn’t sure if you still wanted to invite your uncle’s side of the family, in particular Francis and Elizabeth?”
Ross made a big sigh and sat back in his chair, “Well, we for sure need to invite my Aunt Agatha, Uncle Charles and Verity and her boyfriend Andrew. As far as Francis and Elizabeth…” he made a weird face, looked at Demelza, and finally said, “I don’t know if they will want to come to the wedding after my mother slapped Elizabeth in the face!”
Everyone dropped their forks and looked at Ross. Demelza spoke first, “What the hell Ross! You didn’t tell me that!”
Ross still had that weird face, “Didn’t I? I thought for sure I told you about that. So yeah, the day that mum and da went back to Cornwall, they went straight to Trenwith to talk to Elizabeth. Everyone was there, Uncle Charles, Aunt Agatha, Francis and Elizabeth. And they let Elizabeth have it for calling me and basically causing the accident.” Ross turned to look at Demelza. “Elizabeth started getting mouthy with mum about you and how I shouldn’t marry you, and mum slapped her across the face! I couldn’t believe it when da told me. But I don’t know what you want to do about inviting them.”
Caroline had a big smile on her face, “Holy shit! Good one Grace, good for her. Saved me and Demelza from getting to do the bit!”
Dwight was grinning as well, “I can’t believe that you mild and mannered mother slapped Elizabeth! Wish I could’ve seen that!”
Ross chuckled, “Me too mate. So Dem, what do you think of inviting them or not inviting them?” Demelza bit her lip, “I’d really rather not. Is that mean of me?”
Ross shrugged shoulders, “I don’t think so. Prior to all of this I would’ve said let’s invite them, but not now. I don’t want her there, and I’m sure Francis won’t come without her. Maybe we’ll get lucky and Charles won’t come either.”
“If it helps you any, I wouldn’t invite them either. It’s your day and the last thing you want on your wedding day is drama,” said Dwight.
“Well said Dr Enys. Alright, so I’ll not send that invitation! Ah and here comes our meal! Perfect timing!”
The couples were quiet for a moment while everyone dug into their meals. Caroline ordered the steak, Dwight the chicken and Ross and Demelza the pasta with shrimp. Ross kept watching Demelza out of the corner of his eye. He loved watching her eat. She enjoyed food, any food so much. Her eyes had a special sparkle whenever she would dig into a plate of pasta or a box of her favourite Chinese, and then her eyes would close with love for the flavour of the food.
“Ross….Ross…” Dwight was trying to get Ross’s attention.
Ross finally snapped out of his thoughts, “What’s up mate?”
Dwight smiled, “Where were you just then? I was asking you what you’re going to do about a new car since you have to go to Cornwall next week?”
“Oh, good point. I guess I’m… we, are going car shopping tomorrow. Right babe?” He looked at Demelza.
“I guess. I don’t have anything to do before rehearsal. I think I’m going to put off my driving lessons until after the wedding, because things are starting to get crazy with wedding plans. I have no idea what to look for in a car besides colour.”
Dwight yelled out, “Speed! Get a fast car!”
Ross shook his head, “Lot of good that did me with my last car. Don’t worry Dem, we’ll figure it out.”
Ross and Demelza were back in their cozy home after a long day and evening. Demelza always loved coming home to this house after a long day. She felt safe within those walls, nothing bad could touch them there. Ross was taking off his suit when he let out a moan.
“Are you alright, Ross?”
“Hmmm yeah, just glad to be getting out of these things. I guess I’m going to have to get used to wearing a suit again sooner than later.” He was standing behind Demelza hanging up his suit coat.
Demelza turned around and began to unbutton his shirt for him, while looking him in the eyes. She pulled his shirt out of his pants. She still had a lock on his eyes with a smirk on her lips, running her fingers through the lush black curls on his chest. The couple hadn’t resumed their lovemaking since Ross’s return home, mainly because he still had some pain in his chest and his knee. But hopefully that pain was gone for the most part.
Ross couldn’t break her spell, and he didn’t want to, “What are those eyes saying?”
“They are saying make love to me Ross. Take me.” Ross’s breath catched at the statement. Slowly Demelza turned her back to Ross and he took his cue and slowly unzipped Demelza’s dress to reveal that she wasn’t wearing a bra or knickers. Ross gasped when he realized there was nothing underneath her dress other than her alabaster skin and her black stilettos.
“Bloody hell Demelza! If I would’ve known that you weren’t wearing anything under that dress all night, I would’ve made our excuses and come home straight away after the concert!” Ross’s chest was breathing heavy now. He grabbed her face with his hands and kissed her lips softly but strongly. Demelza was unbuckling his pants and unzipping them. She pulled at his arse while the pants fell to the floor, “Rross…” “Oh dear God Demelza…” She backed him onto the bed and pulled his pants and briefs off all the way, and then tipped him backwards so that he was laying on the bed.
She lowered herself so that she could slowly lick all the way up Ross’s chest causing him to shudder. She did it again, whispering in his ear, “Here I am Ross. Are you feeling alright?”
“Oh I’m feeling just fine, baby,” Ross growled.
“I’m so glad.” She pulled off her heels and then joined him in bed.
Ross quickly flipped her so that she was underneath him, with a devilish grin, “Now that’s more like it.” He started on her neck which was her achilles heel. She couldn’t handle it when he nibbled and sucked on her neck, but yet she wouldn’t have it any other way. She had one hand in his dark curls and one hand clutching his ass cheek pulling on it signaling what she really wanted.
Ross chuckled at her pulling on his ass, “Not yet my love. You need to be more patient. I want to try and make this last and make it really good for you.”
Demelza sighed in frustration, “I don’t have that kind of patience tonight!”
Ross threw his head back in a laugh, “Well that’s just too bad, love.” He bent down to give the redhead a long kiss. She opened her mouth to let his tongue in to explore her mouth and then Demelza started giggling.
“You laughing at me, love?”
“No, it’s just your tongue tickled me! I’m sorry!”
Ross raised an eyebrow at Demelza, “Tickled? I’ll show you ticklish!” And he proceeded to tickle her on her sides causing her to really squirm and giggle.
“No! No! Please stop Ross! Stop it please!” Finally Ross stopped tickling her and started paying more attention to her breasts. He looked in her eyes as he lightly ran a finger around a nipple, “You are so beautiful Demelza. I’m so grateful for the second chance at the life that I get to spend with you.” He lowered his mouth to her other breast and gently sucked on it, running his tongue around the nipple, while pinching the other nipple with his fingers. Ross’s caresses and touches are filled with tenderness and love for the woman he’s going to marry.
The redhead pulled her legs up to wrap around Ross’s waist. His hand wandered to her thigh and caressed it causing Demelza to shudder. “Oh Rrross”. Ross’s head dropped back in passion. He loved it when she said his name like that. “Say it again. My name. Say it again, love.” He continued to lift her leg so that he could lay kisses and loving bites on her thigh. Demelza gasped, “Rosss! Please!” Ross chuckled and moved to pay attention to her other thigh, causing Demelza to whine. “Ross, stop teasing me!”
“Oh you are rather impatient tonight. You need to relax and enjoy yourself.” He leaned down to place a kiss on the soft skin just above her copper curls. He gently laid his head on her belly and inhaled her scent, and closed his eyes, “I love you so much, Demelza.” He was gently running his fingers up and down her thigh. She lovingly guided her hand through his curls, “I love you too.”
Demelza felt a tone shift in his voice just then. Since he’d been home from the hospital, Ross had occasionally made remarks about being grateful to be alive, and taking advantage of his second chance at life. She hadn’t realized until recently how scared he had been while in the hospital. She knew how scared she had been and everyone else, but she had forgotten to take into account how scared he must have been. He hid it well from her trying to keep her calm, making jokes about his condition, occasionally encouraging Demelza to go home and get rest. How could she not have noticed that he was just as scared as she was!? Some fiance I’ve been she told herself. She was so wrapped up in her own fears, that she didn’t pick up on how scared Ross was.
“Ross…”
“Yes, my love.”
“I’m sorry for not realizing that you were scared in the hospital.”
Demelza felt the caressing from his fingers stop. Ross let out a trembling sigh. Soon after that, she felt something wet on her skin. Could it be tears? Was Ross crying? “Ross are you…?” He turned his head so that he could look up at her, his eyes had tears in them. “Oh my love, come here,” she asked.
Ross scooted up so that he could lay in her arms, “You caught me. Yes, I was scared in the hospital, but I didn’t want you to know that I was scared. I didn’t really get scared until the whole thing with Elizabeth, and my breathing got worse. I was so scared that I was going backwards in my progress, and that I was going to be put back on the vent. All I wanted was, to get out of that hospital and be… home in your arms,” more tears were leaving Ross’s eyes. Demelza tried to pull him closer and hold him tight. She felt him trembling, which was a new feeling for her, really for the both of them. “Oh my love, I’m so sorry that I didn’t catch onto what you were feeling. You needed me in a way that I didn’t see. I’m so sorry.”
“No, you don’t need to apologize. You didn’t realize what I was needing, because I didn’t want you to see what I was feeling. I didn’t want you to know that I was afraid. I wanted to protect you and be there for you, and be macho,” Ross was wiping the tears from his cheek. Now Demelza was crying! They looked at each other crying and started laughing at themselves. This was a new experience for the couple. Ross has always been Demelza’s rock, her pillar of strength even though she’s always considered herself to be a strong woman. She was the one who took charge of her life when the cello came into her life. It gave her a pathway out of her father’s life and that house that wasn’t a home. But now she’s realizing that she needed to not just take from Ross, but to give back to him and be his rock as well.
Demelza held his hand and lowered her forehead to rest on his, “Right. So I have an idea. How ‘bout you and I let each other know how we’re feelin, like if somethin worries us, or scares us, so we can be there for each other. You know I can be a tough person, even though I might be weepy sometimes. But you don’ ave to be strong and macho for me and protect me if you’re worried ‘bout somethin. Deal?”
Ross sighed and closed his hazel eyes, “But, I feel like I should protect you from certain things.”
“I’m sorry, what century are you living in Ross? I don’t need protectin, I just need you to be open and honest w’th me, so that we can work things out together. Understand?”
“Well, I thought that’s what we had been doing?” Ross asked.
Demelza kissed each of his eyes, then she moved down to leaving kisses on his cheeks, “Well, we do most of the time, but when it comes to something serious like your health, will you promise me that you’ll share your feelings with me. Pretty please, love?” She moved to nibble on his ear, then his neck, her hand making its way down that fabulous trail of dark hair.
Ross was starting to breathe heavier, “Judas! Whatever you say, love. Just don’t stop what you’re doing! I’m all yours Mrs. Poldark!” Demelza giggled at the effect her attentions was having on Ross. “It’s been way too long Demelzzaah,” Ross’s head fell back as he lost himself in Demelza making love to him.
A week later at Trenwith…
“Are you serious? We didn’t get invited to Ross’s wedding?” Elizabeth was shouting at Francis after the invitations arrived for Charles and Aunt Agatha, but there wasn’t one for the couple.
“Well what do you expect, Elizabeth? Your phone calls caused Ross to have a very bad car accident, not to mention this need you have to still meddle in his life. If anyone should be upset about not being invited, it should be me. I am not happy with you at all with these stunts you’ve been trying to pull Elizabeth. Honestly, I think you’ve forgotten that I’m your husband and that I’m the one you left Ross for all those years ago.”
Elizabeth scowled at Francis, “Don’t remind me,” and turned on her heel and stormed off.
