Arthur isn't a deer or a wolf. He's a collie. He's born and bred to work, to protect the herd, to keep them in line and keep them out of danger. He's loyal, he's protective, he's brave, sure, but he's also kind and friendly to those he values; at his best, he only hurts when necessary, acting as not only a herding dog but a livestock guardian, wary of strangers but otherwise friendly; at his worst, he sees anyone outside his herd as a threat.

He's the best at his job. Always so attentive and loyal, putting himself in danger to keep his herd safe - and his obedience is strong. He's eager to please the shepherd whose hands have only raised to throw the ball or to pet his head. Arthur is good.

But as he ages, despite his obedience and loyalty and skill, he's slowing down. Falling out of favor. Despite his nature and skillset, despite the unwavering loyalty to the herd and the shepherd, the shepherd will always end up shooting him - perhaps not by his own hands, perhaps someone else will, but he'll always be put down in favor of another collie.

The mourning of Hosea Matthews.

I always think about how Dutch never got to mourn Hosea. He was swept away to Guarma and had to think about the survival of the gang. He didn’t have time to dwell on himself or how Hosea died. When he gets back to camp well… we all know how that happened. I wonder if in the night he goes by and visits his grave. Does he talk to it? Ask it for advice. Or is he too scared to even visit it?

One of the gutting scenes is the Dutch's reaction when Hosea died.

His pleas for his freedom went unanswered; among the last things Hosea heard was Dutch calling for him to be released. He cracked his voice, he couldn't even fire a shot, the expression? He knew right then that his soulmate had died right there and part of his soul went with him.

Hosea n Trelawny!!!! Mostly bc they're old but I think they're freaky but they also have genuine restraint/discipline. Dutch would claim he can last longer than the others but he's a liar.

SOOO it's finally time. MAEL STRONGHART! To go with the other mythical creatures in the cast, he, absolutely and without a doubt, gets assigned dragon. He was so overwhelmingly DRAGON that he's the reason I changed my stance on mythical creatures in this AU. More yapping + sketches below the cut, with vague implications about his character.

Now, what good dragon is complete without wings? I omitted one for reference, but Stronghart has two shiny dove wings! And yet... Hmm, it's strange. Those aren't his, are they?

Nope! Not at all. You can imagine them being grafted on however you'd like, but the bottom line is those wings do not belong to him. They've been stolen from, well... Someone else.

Also, lazy bonus with the reason I was so deadset on him being a dragon AHAHDJKSKD I WANT THEM TO BE SUNCATCHERS but I'm Tired... SOMEONE ELSE DRAW HIM BUT BETTER BEAHAHSH (/J)
