A workwear inspired light loose fitting spring coat crafted from plain weave European linen with a relatively high thread count. This fabric has been indigo dyed and then coated in ink on the surface giving the garment unique hues that will gradually wear and age better over time. This fabric has also undergone an eco-friendly bio-processing through the application of enzymatic removals in the dyeing process instead of using chemical threatments. The resulting finished garment comes out like luxurious French vintage indigo linen.

You regard him evenly, patiently, with an air of thanks for his expert advice. But the truth is that you didn't ask for it, you disagree with the premise altogether, and most importantly the institution that he stands for is yet another arm of a government that refuses to listen to you or to animals or to anybody. A government concerned with the psychological comfort of profiteers above the safety of the dispossessed. The government of the place that received you as a refugee and put you through the Aptitude Test, of the place that put this man in this room.

A government whose trained specialist mentats are so afraid of the private opinions and fears of horses that they can be unhinged for weeks by the thoughts of a Thoroughbred. It's silly and juvenile, but then, so is the whole structure, and almost everyone in it.

You are, to them, a Mentat, a very useful and therefore secret kind of asset. When they found you (you had been just another hereditary witch to yourself then) they were ecstatic, conspiratorial, promised you power and status in their world - but you remember the stares and the mutterings from before. Still, you need the money, and it is worth rather a lot of money to the League of Peacekeepers to be able to do what you can do.

You will have a normal Tuesday as soon as the papers have changed hands. The senior mentat hamfistedly congratulating you on joining his rarefied confraternity, who is so very frightened of his loved ones and of his neighbours, has never and will never have a normal Tuesday in his life.

You can't see his thoughts - he knows how to hide them and you don't care to know - but they roil in his eyes with the tense energy of a man with something to prove. To you? Is he reading you? Any idiot without a gift could see your contempt for all of this, still and deep as a crater lake behind your professional veneer. You are professional and that is all you owe him, all you owe his institution; any other idiot would be capable of leaving it at that.

But here none of the idiots are Other. He presses his mouth into a thin, hard smile.

"Hey, lighten up. You Morgalis are all so serious."

You are a native of Desoa, in Gran, where every third person is a mentat or a rainmaker or a hex. Morgal's military burned down your old city not three weeks ago, and you were given no time off to mourn. The government here does not know anything yet about that war, and you were beneath their notice until today.

"It's cultural," you say breezily, and smile, and apologize, and collect your documentation.

You emerge from the dim light of the testing facility into your normal Tuesday. The single fat dove feasting on a discarded grilled cheese sandwich by the garbage can in the smoking area looks up at you from her repast, and her eyes are dark and shining and behind them she is a person. You regard each other - she in her grey, iridescent feather cloak and you in your grey, matte dustercoat. She coos once, thinking a superstitious pigeon's thought about you, which you see as indistinct blue flutters and birds' love and mauvish awe.

It is not unlike what you think about her.

You throw her a bit of granola from your pocket and go on to the bus shelter a kilo from this place. At home is waiting the person you love, who has no secrets from you, who dearly hoped this morning for onion tarts for dinner, but didn't want to worry you on Testing Day.

On the way there, you'll stop at the store to buy flour.

“There are three rules for mind-readers…” The man speaks sternly. “Don’t read loved ones, don’t reveal your powers, and NEVER try to read animals.” He shivers a bit. “You probably think that last part is a joke but trust me; one glimpse into a horse and you won’t be right for a week.”
