patch . help my muse patch up a wound - charlie & duri.

an involuntary hiss falls from his lips when charlie brushes along a particularly tender bit of flesh and his fingers curl fast into a fist that's sure to make her job even harder. he's not met her gaze this whole time, the two of them ( well, mainly charlie ) working in a tense sort of silence and he wonders what she might be thinking about. their date night had been effectively ruined by the dreadful ring of his phone and since duri refused to let her walk back, he's managed to tick her off twofold. was juggling his 'duties' and being a good boyfriend supposed to be this difficult? it's not for lack of trying because he really is trying. the fact that he's here instead of refusing to see anyone seems like a step in the right direction. but he's leagues away from what charlie truly deserves — someone to focus on her needs. "i'm sorry," he finally says aloud, his face still turned away from her. won't go into the unnecessary spiel of not deserving her time ( no matter how true ) but that takes away from the real problem: the fact that he's still split in two places. sometimes even three. "i am trying hard to... quit my other job. but they have claws so deep in me, i'm still having a hard time removing them in a way that doesn't set off a bomb for everyone else. my loyalty is bound to you, not what they need of me. i just..." a sigh breaks his train of thought and he eventually turns just enough to lock his pleading eyes to her beautiful blue eyes. "i just need a bit more time. all i'm asking for is a little more patience and i will get this sorted — i promise."

Mi dispiace, ma io non voglio fare l’Imperatore, non è il mio mestiere, non voglio governare ne conquistare nessuno, vorrei aiutare tutti se possibile, ebrei, ariani, uomini neri e bianchi, tutti noi esseri umani dovremmo aiutarci sempre, dovremmo godere soltanto della felicità del prossimo, non odiarci e disprezzarci l’un l’altro. In questo mondo c’è posto per tutti, la natura è ricca, è sufficiente per tutti noi, la vita può essere felice e magnifica, ma noi lo abbiamo dimenticato. L’avidità ha avvelenato i nostri cuori, ha precipitato il mondo nell'odio, ci ha condotti a passo d’oca fra le cose più abbiette, abbiamo i mezzi per spaziare, ma ci siamo chiusi in noi stessi. L’aviazione e la radio hanno riavvicinato le genti, la natura stessa di queste invenzioni reclama la bontà nell'uomo, reclama la fratellanza universale, l’unione dell’umanità. Perfino ora la mia voce raggiunge milioni di persone nel mondo, milioni di uomini, donne e bambini disperati, vittime di un sistema che impone agli uomini di torturare e imprigionare gente innocente. A coloro che mi odono, io dico, non disperate! L’avidità che ci comanda è solamente un male passeggero, l’amarezza di uomini che temono le vie del progresso umano. L’odio degli uomini scompare insieme ai dittatori e il potere che hanno tolto al popolo ritornerà al popolo e qualsiasi mezzo usino la libertà non può essere soppressa.

Mai parole più serie vennero pronunciate da chi faceva ridere, perché sapeva far ridere. Ma la cosa che mi stupisce è la grande attualità in esse.

he's worried about tomorrow, the first time he'll be gone for a string of days since the start of their relationship. prior to this, the only person he really had to worry about was his sister and, funny enough, thanks to charlie he didn't feel the need to be so overbearing anymore. the moment of silence must have stretched on for longer than she's used to because as his eyes are locked onto her ceiling, duri suddenly feels the warm press of her face against his chest. his mouth parts in a quiet little surprise and he feels like he should say something, anything, that would reassure her that everything was okay. but realistically, duri's doubtful of the state he'll be in upon his return, likely in a state that isn't fitting for her to see. so he'll enjoy this for now and wraps an arm around her middle to keep her close. pull the blanket over the both of them before he drops a finger beneath her chin to lift her face up, and kiss her with a sincerity that words would never be able to convey.

There is always the faintest stumbling block when sitting down to watch a foreign language film. For the first couple of minutes, as your brain struggles to get used to the detachment of the acting from the words being spoken, it somehow feels as if the actors aren't doing a good enough job -- you're forced to read something extra simply to understand what is going on. Of course, the feeling inevitably soon passes, especially when the film is as good as The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan proves to be.

Alexandre Dumas's timeless tale of a young man swept along by the tide of religious and political intrigue has been adapted for the screen many times in the past; from Douglas Fairbanks buckling swashes in the 1920s, through peak 1990s casting of Young Guns' Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland, on up to the most recent pseudo-steampunk re-imagining in 2011 by Resident Evil helmer Paul W.S. Anderson. The most well-known version is probably the 1973 film that starred Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain and Michael York which, like this new French release, made the sensible decision to split the lengthy book into two separate films.

The plot of this first movie, while broadly hewing to that of the 1844 novel, does take a few liberties with the source material. Young D'Artagnan (François Civil) travels to Paris with hopes of joining the famous Musketeers, accidentally picks a fight with three of its most celebrated members, impresses them with his swordplay and joins them in a race to retrieve the Queen's jewels and save their friend from the gallows. In the background, the political machinations of Catholics and Protestants, cardinals and kings drive the plot forward without getting bogged down in the details that make the novel hard going at times. Some of the stakes are raised -- a murder leads to one of the titular three being framed, resulting in a race against time to prove his innocence -- while some are lowered; Constance is now young and unmarried, leaving room for romance with D'Artagnan. Loyal servant Planchet is also, sadly, missing from this telling of the story.

The direction by Martin Bourboulon is universally excellent; the chemistry between the main cast (including Vincent Cassel as Athos, Pio Marmaï as Porthos, Romain Duris as Aramis, and Lyna Khoudri as Constance) sparkles, and the action scenes, although few and far between, ratchet up the pace to near martial arts levels: the initial fight scene wherein the four leads take on the Cardinal's men is cut and blocked almost like a scene from 2011's The Raid; the score is silent, leaving only the grunts and shouts of the cast (who trained for six months by an Olympic swordsman) as they whirl and parry around and over the always-moving camera. The sets, too, are exquisite -- the film was shot mainly on location all over France -- and the lighting at times recalls the famous candlelit scenes in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975).

Eva Green's Milady is unfortunately a little one-note, having not much more to do apart from look sly and self-satisfied whenever she's on screen, but Phantom Thread's Vicky Krieps makes the most of her limited screen time as the two-timing Queen Anne at the centre of the film's two-hour runtime.

Overall, it's easily one of the best interpretations of the beloved novel (not counting the near-perfect Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, of course); it remains to be seen whether the second part, The Three Musketeers: Milady, set to be released in December 2023, can stick the landing.
