Our Utsav's (festivals)
I completed my graduation from Hinduja College (Charni Road, Mumbai) with friends who had faith in Lord Ganesha and Maa Durga – during the respective Utsav’s (festivals), it was a common practice for me to hop Ganeshotsav mandals at Khetwadi, Girgaon, Lalbaug and occasionally attend the Garba Raas too! Being a non-dancer, I never enjoyed them, really!
Post passing out from college, I never went back to those mandals, instead, I started visiting friends houses for Ganesh darshan over the last 15+ years – this ritual was broken during the pandemic times.
This year, for some reason, I decided to visit those lanes at Khetwadi and Girgaon again and relive those memories – a friend accompanied me, and we hopped like 15 to 18 mandals over a 4-hour period. Luckily, I got a good parking spot just outside Harkishandas Hospital and we completed this 4-hour trip on the foot. A small break at Nityanand (after ages!) helped us recharge during this trip!
Here’s a look at the beautiful idols (including the one at a friend’s home too):
Tumblr media
I had joined this company in 2007 and made some Bengali friends there – every year during Durga Puja, I would hear stories from Kolkata of the Pandals and Pujos and the food; and I was like – once, at least once, I must be in Kolkata for Durga Puja but that hasn’t materialised yet.
However, for the last 2 weeks, I was planning to visit all the Pandals in Mumbai itself and see what happens in there. Tried asking a friend but the friend couldn’t accompany me this time, so I decided to go solo.
Instead of my car, I decided to take this tour on foot, in trains, metro, and rickshaws. I started my day with a visit to the Chembur Durga Puja Association pandal – got to know that today was Maha Shashti (Day 1 of the Durga Puja) and hence the Pandals would open a little later in the day. After Chembur, I returned home and ate some lip-smacking Pav Bhaji, a perfect recipe for an afternoon siesta!
Later in the evening, I re-started my journey and visited the following pandals:
Bandra: Natun Pally Sarbojanin Durgotsab (this one I am told has participation from Sushmita Sen)
Khar: Ramakrishna Math Building
Juhu: North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja Samity (this one I am told has participation from the Mukherjee’s – Rani, Kajol, Ayan) – I actually saw Rani’s father on stage.
Andheri: Lokhandwala Durgotsav (this one I am told has participation from Abhijeet (the singer) Bhattcharya)
Overall, across these 5 pandals, I covered a journey of ~50KMs (end-to-end) over a ~6-hour period. The effort was worthwhile with the festivities, vibes, the people, and the food!
Anyone who is looking to visit these Pandals over the next 3 days, do reach out – happy to help!
Here’s a look at the beautiful idols – pictures certainly cannot capture what the mind saw!

Kolkata Durga puja pandal enlivens with 'Tandav'
Tumblr media
Sep 29, 2022 06:40 IST Kolkata (West Bengal) , September 29 (AF): The Hazra Park Durgotsab Puja Committee in Kolkata is in its 80 years. This year, the theme of the Durga puja celebrations is 'Tandav'.
Tumblr media
Notably, the puja was started 80 years ago by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The Hazra Park Durgotsab Puja Committee pandal also became unique this year as it installed a braille board to facilitate the visually-impaired pandal hoppers.
Tumblr media
Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim inaugurated the puja pandal on Wednesday.
Tumblr media
Speaking to ANI, West Bengal Agriculture Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, who is associated with the puja said, "The puja was started by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose eighty years ago. This year, the theme is the current turbulent situation around the world-- be it natural disasters or protests or riots. There is a war in Ukraine. The pandal articulates the present situation as there is a 'Tandav' around the world."
Tumblr media
Sayan Deb Chatterjee, Secretary of Hazra Park Durgotsab Committee said, "We encounter some sort of 'Tandav' in daily life. The mandap reflects the 'Tandav' of humankind as well as nature. Our theme is seeking respite and peace from 'Tandav'. Even in news, we only see Tandav. Due to massive industrialisation, we do Tandav with the environment as a result nature also does Tandav."
Tumblr media
West Bengal government has increased the grant for the Durga Puja organising committees in the state from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 this year. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also declared a holiday period from September 30 to October 10 for Durga puja. Durga Puja is considered to be one of the biggest festivals around the world. UNESCO on December 15 inscribed "Durga Puja in Kolkata" on the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity". This year makes it more special as UNESCO has inscribed Durga Puja in UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and it is the first Indian festival to do so. The Hindu festival of Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava or Sharodotsava, is a yearly celebration that honours the Hindu goddess Durga and commemorates her victory over Mahishasur. To destroy Mahishasura, Goddess Druga appeared from the fusion of all the gods' energies in heaven. She had ten arms, and on each of them, she carried the most lethal weapon belonging to each God. All of Goddess Durga's weapons are sanctified during this time. Over the years, Durga puja has become an inseparable part of Indian culture with innumerable people celebrating this festival in their own unique way while pertaining to tradition. Hindu mythology holds that the goddess comes to her earthly abode at this time to bless her devotees. For the Bengali community, Durga Puja is the biggest festival. This year Maha Shashti falls on October 1 and Vijaya Dashami on October 5. The significance of Durga Puja goes beyond religion and is revered as the celebration of compassion, brotherhood, humanity, art and culture. From the reverberation of 'dhaak' and new clothes to delicious food, there remains a merry-go-round mood during these days. In other parts of the country, during the nine-day Navratri festival, devotees worship Maa Durga's nine incarnations in order to obtain her blessings. There is a goddess manifestation linked with each day of Navratri. During these nine days, people maintain ritualistic fasts, recite shlokas dedicated to each goddess, wear new clothing, offer bhog, and clean their homes. In their prayers, they ask the goddess for her favour in order to have prosperous, joyous and fulfilled lives. (AF) Read the full article

When People with special needs don’t have to stand in long queues to enter the pandal and have direct access to the Puja premises it would really inspire the differently abled to visit the pandal and participate in the festive fervour. A little thoughtfulness can give an opportunity to people with varying abilities and disabilities to celebrate the festival with the same sense of belongingness and joy. It’s very encouraging to see many puja committees making an effort in this direction and others will soon follow. In today’s world some able people are sometimes more disable by way of their thinking, behaviour and adaptability.” Speaking about the event, Sri. Sayan Deb Chatterjee, Joint Secretary of Hazra Park Durgotsab Committee said, “At the beginning of this Puja season, when everybody desires to go with the impeccable mood of celebrations, we have decided to devote our self to support a unique fight for humanity, right & equality to enthral our social commitment. Even in the field of daily living activities, the Braille watch, Braille calculator, Braille thermometer, etc. have been developed with a view to provide independence to the sightless for daily use and now it's time for festive celebrations with Braille Display Stand for the Blinds. It's not only an event. It's not only an award ceremony or launch. Rather, it's a journey with a cordial promise to make a better society." Speaking on the occasion Sri. Tapan Pattanayak, CEO of Saini Group said, “Durga Puja is the biggest festival of West Bengal. The people of West Bengal enjoy the festival with great pomp. But people forget about the other part of the society who are differently able and also senior citizens. For their free access, a few arrangements must be done in the puja pandals. We request the Puja Committees to whole-heartedly support us in this mission.” Read the full article
