Mom called me a shitty roommate today bc after months of her telling me to rent a uhaul (too young to do so) and then flaking out on me whenever I asked her if we could it on x day, I gave up on trying to get my bf's heavy TV and dresser and ordered a mountable tv, instead of buying more storage totes so that I could add to the ever increasing stack of totes in our guest bedroom
#leading up to and since raine moved in i have thrown tons of shit away and so has he#we both moved from larger rooms into a smaller shared room#meanwhile my parents moved into a bigger room with a bigger closet and claimed the garage for storage space#i have several decorative items that would look cute out in the livingroom without clashing with her style#but she considers all my items ''clutter'' so i have to keep them in my room or in a tote#except all my totes are already occupied by other shit#i threw away 90% of my friends items that i was storing here in an effort to make my room tidier#(and to ensure that my items are not littered around the livingroom and kitchen)#i got a bed frame with drawers so i could store items in there#i am not a horder and neither is raine but we have to condense two peoples worth of things into one room and two closets#and like i said before we both had bigger rooms before moving to this house#my room was way larger before. even with my giant ass desk (that doesnt fit in my room) my old room#didnt look cluttered bc it had lots of open space. even tho that was a 2 bedroom apartment#and this is a 3 bedroom duplex with garage the square footage in this house was budgeted poorly#my hallway is literally a snail spiral shape so a lot of space is lost to the curvature#not to mention my parents have bought more shit than we had at the old place to fill up space that we all shared in our old apt#except i am going to mention it bc i think this is totally unfair#i get that my mom has never liked when my room is messy. she's my mom and she is going to nag#but she does not have to use my room or bathroom (she has her own. thats bigger than mine)#and i keep my bathroom clean for guests#and she has made it clear that she is unwilling to help me even when i ask and tried to plan out ways to cheaply get more furniture#raine has had tote boxes in his car since he moved in bc he knows that we dont have a place for them inside#not to mention several collectable swords (including limited edition skyrim sword and genuine damascus)#which is kind of a fucking road safety hazard since they are real blades#but he puts up with it bc he doesnt want to add to the clutter#i bought this tv and wall mount bc i know that as long as my tv is grounded to a dresser i cant rearrange my room to make more space in here#and im donating my current tv to the guest bedroom bc they wont buy one for it#they also wont buy a dresser for it which is why my mom was hounding me to rent a uhaul for raines dresser#(i cannot stress this enough. we are both TWENTY. how are we going to rent a car. we need older adult help!!!)

My King
Series summary: Your parents signed you up for an Alpha Omega Match company when you were eighteen. It took years for them to find your match, but you meet the giant austrian man. Will he be a good partner?
Chapter summary: You get a call from your mother regarding your match. You are nervous to meet them, but they turn out to be a pleasant surprise.
Pairing: König x Fem Reader
Warnings: A/B/O dynamics (Never use this abbreviation without the slashes it is an indigenous slur) 18+ MDNI (no others for this chapter)
Word count: 4.1k (damn thats a lot for me)
Genre: Mostly Fluff a little angst here and there.
A/n: Yo Yo Yo whatup. New fic dropping. This one is black/poc coded but anyone can read. I haven't seen any poc coded cod fics just yet (if you know any send them my way). If you do not like Omegaverse fics please do not read. Also I tried making a cute little mood board, i think it sucks but I tried my best. Konig art credit. (I couldn't find the art credit for the girl). König and reader are neurospicy. I got inspired to do an Apex Alpha König from @ghostlythunderbird go give them some love please. Also this is kinda what I imagine him looking like.
Next Chapter
Chapter One:
His back ached as he climbed the few steps to his door. The passage back to his home was uncomfortable. All König wanted to do with collapse on his bed. The duplex he resided in was decent, the little old woman who rented it to him was very sweet. König had a hard time getting anyone to rent to him. His status as an Apex alpha was concerning for most people. They believed him to be violent and inconsiderate. His landlord is an omega that lives with her alpha mate. König managed to convince her. She thought he was sweet and kind. He opened the foyer door that lead to both apartments. He glanced at the mailbox, wondering if he should wait until morning. Begrudgingly, he took out the small mailbox key and fiddled the metal box open. He grabbed the plethora of mail and closed the box gently. The box was filled up quite a bit as he had not been home in a couple of weeks.Â
Heading up the stairs he filed through the mail. Most were junk coupons and magazines, some were credit card sign-up letters. One envelope caught his eye. It had no company name just a large white manila envelope addressed to him. He opened his door and stepped inside placing the mail and his belongings on his couch. He ripped open the envelope and took out a thin book. It had the circular logo of the AOMO, the Alpha Omega Match organization.Â
König started at the cover his heartbeat sped up the longer he thought about it. He signed up for the program after a particularly hard mission he had in KorTac. He left and joined the 141 and decided he wanted an omega. A lot of the men in the 141 had partners they could come home to. König wanted that. Most people were too afraid to be in a committed relationship with him. König often settled for one-night stands with betas but it left him feeling empty. He opened the packet to the first page.
'Congratulations!' The first word read. His heart beat harder the more he read.Â
'We have found you a match!' König's heart felt like it was going to pound out of his chest.Â
'In the plastic wrap, we've provided a fresh scent sample from your potential match. If you like the scent of your match, please send us a scent sample from you as soon as possible.'Â
König gripped the packet and leaned over the table, putting his weight on the table. He took a deep breath, he felt a mix of fear and excitement. When he signed up he was not hopeful for a match. He assumed his situation was too complicated for them. He flipped through the packet before reading the rest searching for the scent sample. A plastic bag fell out onto the table. It was sealed and had a verification sticker assuring its authenticity. König picked up the bag carefully. It had a square of white fabric inside it. He took his hood off before opening the bag gingerly. The scent instantly made his knees weak. This Omega had a warm and spicy scent. Coconut and sugary vanilla with hints of sandalwood. König stuffed his nose into the bag inhaling the deep rich smell of this Omega.Â
König sealed the scent sample wanting to savor it. He opened the packet back up to the first page. It said once he mailed his scent sample and was approved by his match, they would arrange a meeting with him and his match. There was more information about this Omega and their family along with the reasoning for them picking them. They informed him that this omega was a twenty-six-year-old female. Her father is also an Apex Alpha, he is retired American military. They did not provide a picture of any matches because they wanted the connection to be based on instinct rather than looks. Her mother is an Omega that works as a teacher. There is not much else about the Omega but, König is hopeful. He reads the instructions to send his scent sample. They provided a kit with a form envelope, a small square of fabric, and a plastic bag, almost identical to the one he received from his match.Â
'Wash your hands, and rinse any dirt off of your scent glands.'
'Then remove the fabric from the plastic.'
'Rub the fabric on your clean scent glands for 20-25 minutes.'
'Seal the fabric thoroughly in the bag provided .'
He shed his vest and protective gear, the last thing he wanted was for her to smell dust and gunpowder on him. König tried to quell his excitement as he followed the directions. Rushing to his bathroom and then back to his dining room. The fabric square was slightly smaller than his palm. He cupped the crook of his neck, sandwiching the fabric between his hand and his neck. He rubbed gently filling it with his scent. He read the rest of the packet as he rubbed. The rest was mostly semantics about the company and its policies. He combed it a few more times trying to memorize every piece of information about his Omega.Â
König smiled gently, he shouldn't think of her as his yet. She smelled so good, too good for him. He smelled the cloth every once in a while to ensure his scent was potent enough. When he was done he placed it in the bag and sealed it. He filled out the form and packed the pre-paid envelope neatly. He grabbed his keys and left his apartment to go to the mail drop-off on the corner of the block. He needed to send it today, he wouldn't be able to sleep if he didn't. He walked back to his apartment having long forgotten about his back pain.Â
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You looked at the list on your phone pushing your shopping cart. Buying the week's groceries had fallen to you this time as your mother was dealing with state testing for her students and your dad was on a hunting trip. You maneuvered the isles expertly collecting the items on your list. As well as some extra sweet snacks you like to indulge in much to our mother's chagrin. You were about to put a pack of Oreos in the cart when your mom called.
âHello?â You answered but all you can hear was excited screeching. You held the phone away from your ear until she quieted down.Â
âHe accepted you!!!â She screamed.Â
âWhat? Mom, you're too loud.âÂ
âThe match company! The match they picked liked your scent.â She giggled.Â
You were slightly stunned. Your parents signed you up for the AOMO when you were eighteen. You weren't that on board with it but you let them. You know they only want the best for you. You kept sending scent samples every year but they never got back to you about anything. Now, six years later they show up with a match for you.Â
âI just got the call, they're sending a scent sample for you right now it's gonna get here in a few days.âÂ
âWow...â That was all you managed to say.Â
âNow I know this wasn't your ideal way to meet someone, but just please be open-minded sweetheart.âÂ
You sighed. âI will. I'm finishing up at the grocery and I'll head home.â
âAlright, I'm gonna be home soon too, bye sweetie.âÂ
You hung up the phone and stood in the aisle. You placed the pack of Oreos in the cart and moved to get the rest of the items before checking out.Â
When you arrived home your mother was there waiting. She squealed and hugged you before helping you take the grocery bags inside.Â
âI am so excited for you! I have heard so many good things about the AOMO. I bet whoever they picked is gonna be great.â
âLet's hope.â You say.Â
The next few days went by quickly. You dove into writing your next few chapters to take your mind off of the match. The sequel to your best-selling fantasy novel was underway. Your days consisted of writing, planning, engaging with fans, and talking to your editor. You typed out the outline for the next few chapters when you heard a knock.Â
âCome in.â You said.Â
Your mother walked in holding a large envelope. âGuess what came today?â She said excitedly.Â
 Your heart thumped with anxiety. She placed the envelope on your desk.
âIâll leave you to it, let me know if you like them.â She sauntered out of the room happily.Â
You picked up the envelope and opened it pulling out a packet of information. You flipped to the first page.Â
âCongratulations!â It read.Â
âThe match we have chosen for you wants to meet you. Once you contact us with your acceptance of their scent, we will arrange for them to meet you and your family with the chaperone of one AOMO agents to facilitate. The two of you will go on a date and get to know each other before deciding whether to move forward. If you do not accept the scent, we will put you back in our database to be matched with someone else.âÂ
In the middle of the pages, there was a plastic bag with a white cloth in it. You picked it up and sighed. You doubted you would like the scent. Most alphas were off-putting to you, either way too strong of a scent of they smelled like dishwater. You opened the bag casually and took a whiff. Your inner Omega preened at the musk that erupted from the bag.Â
âOh myâŠâ You inhaled deeply.Â
This AlphaâŠsmelled good? He smelled like chocolate and dark roast espresso. There were some hints of fresh baked bread and cinnamon. You caught yourself before you got lost in his scent. You sealed the bag up and took a breath. Maybe, this would be a good experience for you. You scanned through the rest of the information looking over what little they provide about this Alpha. He is a male Alpha, non-American but they did not specify what country. The only other thing they said about him was that his demeanor was shy and that he is military. The instructions said to call the number if you wanted to meet him. You reached for your phone a little too eagerly and dialed the number. A womanâs voice answered.
âHi, youâve reached the Alpha Omega Match organization how may I help you?â
âHi, um I got an Alphaâs scent in the mail, and I want to meet him.â You said awkwardly.
âWhatâs your name and date of birth?â You told her, nervously.Â
âPlease hold while I transfer you.âÂ
The light piano hold music came on, you fidgeted with your sleeve.Â
âThis is Kara, how may I help you?â
âOh hi, I got an Alphaâs scent in the mail and I would like to meet him.â
âAlright, let me get your file from reception sheâs sending it right nowâŠAh got it. Oooh ok great I am your agent that will be facilitating this meeting. Your parents will want to meet him yes?â
âDefinitely.â
âOk so, what we will do is you and your parents will meet me at a public space of your choice then. I will bring you to meet the Alpha first, then your parents. We like to keep parent meetings brief as they tend to try and challenge the Alpha. I will have you know, this Alpha is an Apex like your dad. That is one of the reasons we chose you as his match, you have experience with an Apex. Will you be comfortable with all that?â
âYeah, thatâs fine.â Your head was reeling from all this information. Great, I see you guys are in New York City which is one of my favorite places to visit. Do you have anywhere in mind to meet?âÂ
âUm, we could do the Highline, thereâs food, and it's pretty.âÂ
âOh, thatâs a great idea let me write it down here. How does September ninth at noon sound to you? A weekday so there are not too many people.âÂ
Your heart jumped, thatâs in two days.
âUh, sure.âÂ
âAlright, I will send you a follow-up email regarding our plans all you need to do is confirm. Your match will be notified, and his flight will be booked as soon as we receive confirmation. Do you have any other questions?âÂ
âNo not at the moment.âÂ
âOk, donât hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns. I will see you in a few days.âÂ
âBye.âÂ
You put your phone on your desk and walked out of your room. Your mother was standing a few feet away from your door. When she noticed you, her face lit up.
âSo? How was the scent? Are you meeting them?âÂ
You smiled and nodded âYup, in two days.âÂ
She squealed and captured you in a bone-crushing hug.
âI canât wait! Letâs go tell your father!â She practically ran down the hall.Â
You walked to your living room where your otherwise stoic-looking dad was watching TV.Â
âTell us about them, sweetheart.â Your mother said. Your dad turned the volume on the TV down and looked at you expectantly.
âWell, I donât know much but, I know heâs not American and that he might be shyâŠHe smells good.âÂ
âThatâs important, I hope you wouldnât pick someone who smells like shit.â Your dad chimed in.Â
âHeâs also military, and an Apex.â You added quickly.Â
Your mother gasped quietly, and your father raised his eyebrows.
âNow thatâs intriguing.â Your mom said smiling.
âYou already booked a meeting with him?â Your dad asked. You nodded.Â
âYou shouldâve asked me first.â He pinched his nose bridge in annoyance.Â
âWell, heâs my match and I wanted to meet him.â
âApex Alphas are dangerous. I would know.â
âOh, please honey itâll be fine.â Your mother ridiculed him.
âItâs my choice, Dad. You guys are the ones who signed up, I finally got a match, so I want to see it through. If it doesnât work out, then Iâll call it off.â
Your father growled lowly. âFine.â
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your mother insisted to dress you in a cutesy outfit, so you let her have her moment. She dressed you in a dark floral dress that hugged your curves just right. She added dainty jewelry along with your protective collar. You didnât usually wear it but again, she insisted. She did your hair half up half down. Your dad was waiting by the front door with your momâs purse in hand.Â
The train ride there was silent, your mother looked utterly content while your father was peeved about this whole situation. You arrived at the station and walked to the Highline. You got a text from Kara telling you what she looked like and where she was. She was wearing a dark blue pencil skirt and a white blouse. She stood up as you and your family approached. You stuck your hand out to shake hers.
âNice to meet you guys, come sit.â She said motioning to the bench she was on.Â
Your father stayed standing while you and your mother took a seat next to her.Â
âSo, there are some things I want to go over with you all and then Iâll talk to you privately and do the official meeting ok?â
âHeâs here?â You said in an almost panicked tone.
Kara chuckled. âHe is here but I left him to wait somewhere out of sight for now.â
She continued. âHis name is König, he was born in Austria. When we did his psyche and personality evaluations, we found that he has neurodivergent tendencies, like you. Our matches with people that have a similar way of communicating have gone well.â
âWait, neurodivergent?â Your mom chimed in.Â
âYes, your daughter did show signs of some behavioral abnormalities, but she is high functioning.â
âI told you that Mom.â You say giving her a deadpan look. Your mother looked down and gave a small âhmmâ. Kara continued.Â
âHe does struggle with social anxiety so please be patient with him. Other than that, he currently lives in Amsterdam, if you choose to go forward that is where you will live.â
Your dad finally spoke âIs Amsterdam safe for people like us?â He asked with a raised eyebrow.Â
âOh yes, Amsterdam has many people from different places and backgrounds. It is one of the most popular immigration and tourist countries, donât worry.â
âAlright, how about you come with me, and weâll get your meeting started.â
Kara led you away, you turned and did a small wave to your parents your mom smiled back at you warmly.Â
âSo, I will be in contact with you the whole time. If you want to go just say the word, I am never going to be more than a couple minutes away. Honestly, I donât think youâll have any issues with him.âÂ
She led you to a restaurant below the high line, it had indoor and outdoor seating. There were a lot of people laughing and drinking. Your heartbeat sped up as you scanned the crowd. The scent of food entered your nose. Everyoneâs scent in the dining area mixed into an indescribable concoction. Among the borderline overwhelming smells, you got a hint of something familiar, espresso.Â
You scanned the large room trying to pinpoint where it was coming from or if you were just imagining it. I dark figure near the corner of the room caught your eye. He looked way too large for the chair he was sitting in. He was looking down at his hands, dirty blonde hair covered his forehead. He was wearing a black cloth mask along with a form-fitting black shirt. As soon as you walked in he raised his head. You looked away pretending you weren't staring at him. Kara led you straight to his table.
âThis is König.â She gestured to him.Â
He stood up to shake your hand still keeping himself hunched at the waist to appear smaller. You shook his hand and smiled as you introduced yourself. He nodded and said a small 'hmm' to acknowledge you.Â
âAlright, I'll be near. Have fun.â Kara left swiftly.
You sat down in the chair across from him as he did the same. A wave of anxiety came as you did, not knowing how to break the ice with him. You picked up the menu and scanned it.
âDid you order yet?â You ask.
âNo, I was waiting for you.â
âWell thank you, what looks good?âÂ
âThe Steak frites look pretty good.â He glued his menu.
âI'm excited for dessert, they have chocolate cheesecake.â
He chuckled and it made your stomach flip.
âYou like sweets?â He asked.
âVery much.â You smile at him.Â
The waitress came over and asked if you wanted any drinks. König looked at you, waiting for you to order first.Â
âI'll try the elderberry gin and tonic.â You said.
 Konig was about to order when the table next to us erupted in loud laughter. He jumped slightly before answering the waitress.Â
âI'll get the house Lager.â He said.Â
The waitress left to grab the drinks. The adjacent table was still very loud. The group of friends hollering and screaming obviously day drunk. Konig had his head slightly turned away from them in an attempt to lessen the noise. It was subtle but you could tell. You reached into your bag and brought out a pair of foldable headphones. You turned on the noise cancellation and gave them to him. He looked slightly confused.Â
âPut them on.â You encourage him.Â
When he did the noise muffled and the restaurant was much quieter. You could see the tension in his shoulders ease by the second. His scent sweetened
âIs that better? Can you hear me ok?âÂ
König swears he could've kissed you right then and there, but he settles on a nod.Â
âThank you, Leibe.âÂ
âNo problem.â
The waitress came by with the drinks and asked if the two of you are ready to order entrees. You ordered the fish and König ordered the Steak. While you waited, you two had a pleasant small talk about his flight and how he is enjoying his visit. He hesitated to take off his mask at first so you focused on your menu to give him the space to be comfortable with you. You glanced up and took in his face. He was beautiful, he had scars on his face that added ruggedness to his chiseled features. König noticed your scent amplify as you gazed at him. His inner alpha pushed him to be closer, to know more about you.
âSo, you're in the military?âÂ
He nods. âI work for a military contractor. Do you work?â
âSort of, I'm an author so I work from home.â
âThat is nice, are you published?â König was secretly very happy he'd get to have you at home all day.Â
âYes, I am. I'm working on my sequel right now. Do you like to read? Or, do you read in German?âÂ
He chuckled. âI have not had much time to read lately, but I will now.â
âWell, you have to buy my book of course.â You giggled.Â
König nearly fell off his chair at the sound. This Omega was everything he wanted. He prayed to whatever god was up there that you felt something with him. By the time the food came you both fell into a comfortable rhythm. He asked about your childhood and hobbies. It was a change of pace, most Alphas are very self-centered, but he is putting effort into getting to know you. The food came out and you both ate. He offered bites of his food for you to try which you happily returned the favor. By the time you finished your food, you hadn't noticed how much time has gone by. Kara texted you to check-in.Â
'Hey, so I saw things were going well so I let you guys talk for an hour and a half but, your parents are getting antsy. Are you guys ready to see your parents?'Â
âOh, Kara is asking if we're ready to see my parents.âÂ
König fiddled with his fork. âI'm ready.âÂ
He paid the bill and you both left the restaurant. You took in the full size of the Alpha you matched with. He was no less than a giant. He held the door for you but stopped before he walked through.Â
âI forgot something, I'll be back.â He walked back into the restaurant.Â
Kara walked up to you. âHow did it go?âÂ
âI...really like him...â
âI know, that feeling is scary. I think you guys are a wonderful match.â
König came out holding a small to-go box. He handed it to you, you could tell he was smiling under his mask.Â
âWhat's this?â
Inside the box was a slice of chocolate cheesecake and a fork.
âWe forgot to order dessert.âÂ
You were stunned, you didn't think there could be Alphas that were so thoughtful. Your inner Omega soared, this Alpha was courting you so well.Â
âThank you, König, that's really sweet.âÂ
âAh, here they are.â Kara said.Â
Your parents walked up to the three of you. Your mother had a surprised but happy look on her face. Your father kept his deadpan face from earlier, not a good sign.Â
âWow, sweetheart you caught a big one!â Your mom chuckled.Â
âParents, this is König.â Kara said.Â
Your mother introduced herself and your father as he stood there sizing up the taller Apex.Â
âAlright, let's keep things brief parents do you have any questions for König?â
âWell, as long as she likes him I don't.â Your mother said.Â
âCan you protect her?â Your dad asked putting some venom behind his words.Â
âI would never let anything happen to her sir. You have my word.â König answered without hesitation.Â
Your dad nodded and looked at you. âYou like him?â
â...Yeah I do.âÂ
âAlright then, that's all that matters.âÂ
âWell, I think it's safe to say that the match is made. I will contact you for the next steps. Parents, let's let them say goodbye.â Kara led your parents away.
You turned to König. âThank you for meeting with me, I had a really good time.â You saw a faint blush at the top of his mask.Â
âI also had a good time, liebe.âÂ
âWhat does that mean?â
âAh...it means love.âÂ
âOh well...â You motioned for him to come bend down close to you.
When he got close enough you pecked his cheek.Â
âI'll see you soon, love.âÂ

nsfw. mdni. this is self indulgent but its my right as a 20 something who is getting ready to move out on their own for the first time to write about landlord john price ok <3
landlord price who buys a nice looking duplex in the city and fixes it up himself. lives in the top floor because he doesnât need much space to himself and rents out the bottom unit. so far it had mostly been couples or smaller familes renting out the bottom unit, until you came along.
you, who had been saving money to rent something nice for yourself, something with a little extra space. the two bedroom downstairs unit is perfect for you, but you have pretty mixed feelings about your landlord living right above you. until you actually meet him.
upon moving in your greeted by the warm accent of john price. his eyes crinkle when he smiles at you and you can pick out grey hairs in his full beard. itâs so cliche, feeling butterflies for an older man whose kind to you but what are you supposed to do when he offers to help you bring in boxes, muscly arms on full display?
he allows you time and space to get settled in, with a promise of, âiâm just upstairs if you ever need anything.â
you donât see him for the next few days until thereâs a knock at your door and its him, looking soft and sweet in a grey henley, just in time for the colder fall weather. âwould you care to join me for dinner? i tried a new soup recipe and seems like a i have enough to feed a small army.â
and thatâs how you end up in his space for the first time. itâs tiday yet lived in. furniture dark and worn. you can tell a man lives here. dinner is nice, soup rich and filling. but john makes it so much better. effortlessly making you laugh with his bad jokes and stories. heâs warm and personable. your little crush grows when he walks you back downstairs to your unit when the sun goes down. you find yourself struggling to go inside to your empty apartment.
some days you see him and some days you donât. your work schedule is consistent but you canât get a read on his schedule, coming and going unpredicatably. life of a retiree, you think.
sometimes you catch him when youâve come home from work. usually youâre thrilled to see him, an immediate smile stretching across your face and a blush on your cheeks as soon as you see his smile and hear his voice.
sometimes you curse his presence. like now, when you canât even wait until you get inside your place before the tears start to fall. and of course john has to be in the front yard racking up leaves. you try to give a polite hello and walk up the steps inside, but john price can already read you like a book.
heâs pulling you into his chest before you even know it, big, solid arms wrapped around your shoulders holding you snug to him. âwhatâs got you so upset, huh?â
and you let the tears fall in earnest, feeling safe and secure with john. âworkâŠjust fucking sucks.â
âoh you poor thing,â he coos before gathering you up in his arms and leading you up to his place. he brews some tea as you sink into his couch, the leather warm and soft underneath you. once the teas done, he settles next to you and letâs you warble on about how unsupportive your work environment is and how your boss never follows through on his promises. he mostly just lets you talk, letting out an occasional hum in affirmation. that night heâs not very talkative, heâs much more tactile. running his hands up and down your arms, rubbing the tension from your shoulders and back as he allows you to lean on him until youâre practically in his lap. youâve exhausted yourself crying and he thanks you for being so vulnerable with him and tells you that even though you donât deserve all the bullshit at your job, youâre such a brave girl for fighting through it.
things continue to get more and more comfortable between you two. you would almost go as far as to say you would consider him a friend. you do still sometimes have awkward moments though. like when you go down to the basement to change your laundry from the washer to the dryer and you find him already placing your garments in. âoh sorry,â he says, flustered, a tinge of pink dusting his cheeks at being caught. âi spilt some paint on myself earlier while touching up the trim outside and really needed to get some stuff in the washer. i was going to message you asking if all this stuff could go in the dryer.â
heâs so thoughtful, you think. âyeah, it can all go in. thanks, john!â
hours later when youâre finally putting away your clean laundry you realize some of your panties are missing. oh well, its an older dryer, must have eaten them.
its months layer when your stomach drops as you read a text from john asking if you could come upstairs later tonight, there was something he needed to talk to you about. you feel a flash of panic, his text sounding serious. did you do something wrong? you had just seen him the previous day and everything between you seemed fine. you thought you were a great renter, but now you werenât so sure.
you make your way up to his place and he greets you at the door, usual soft smile on his face.
âi just wanted to get something out in the open,â he starts as you both take a seat on the couch. âiâve noticed an odor coming from downstairs late at night.â
for a moment you have no idea what he could be talking about, an odor, you think and then it hits you. your late night smoke sessions. âoh, yeah.â it dawns on you. âiâm so sorry about that.â
âno, no, itâs fine.â he reassures, âi would be a bit of a hypocrite myself to be honest, i smoke cigars constantly. try to keep it to just the back balcony but sometimes i break my own rules.â
âyeah, i donât do it in the apartment because that would be rude, but,â you wince, âsometimes i get a little too lazy to go outside so i just do it out my bedroom window.â
âah, no worries, dear. just wanted to let you know that i know.â
with your panic subsiding you feel a little bold, âwould you like to smoke a little, john?â
âif youâre offering, iâll be on the balcony.â
you would have never imagined sharing a joint with john would lead you here. in his lap, legs splayed open with your pants around your ankles. listening to the wet sounds of your pussy as he dips his big fingers inside you, hitting all the right spots. your brain is floaty and your limbs feel weightless against his big body that surrounds yours.
thereâs a constant stream of nonsense and whimpers that leaves your lips as you dumbly watch him pet your swollen clit. but its the filth from his mouth that really gets you. âsuch a pretty little thing foâ me, huh?â
âthis little cunt âs all mine, right?â
âiâve been thinking about touching you like this since the day you moved in.â
âcum on my fingers, sweet girl, i know you want to.â
and you do, clenching around his fingers as you keen and moan through it. thereâs a whispered, âgood girl,â deep and gravelly in your ear before youâre being lifted into johnâs arms as he carries you back inside, to his bedroom.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
or in the cold, crisp morn:
"These are the keys," Your new landlord hands you the copies, clinking against each other as you transfer them to a dish by the door. Your first thought is that there seem to be too many for this modest apartment: of varying shapes and sizes, and at least half a dozen. He steps through a wide archway to the kitchen, eerily clean. It's not modern by any means, the top half of a hulking brownstone some time away from college.
Itâs been⊠a trying summer. Moving halfway across the country with your boyfriend had seemed like a great idea at the time. Younger you (barely 2 years ago) had been enamoured with the promises of city life: fast-paced, bustling, and never a dull day. Naivete and big ideas that you'd been too stupid, or maybe too desperate, to let go of. After being locked in a loop of the same 3 or 4 places, the same dozen faces - in a place as big as this, mind you - maybe your ex-boyfriend had freed you. Forced you from that halfway-home; as cold and empty as it had become; and back out into the world.Â
The reality was less than ideal - apartment hopping across the city for the past 4 months or so. Youâd seen it all: glorified shoeboxes, fancy duplexes, viewing sublet rooms that were at least a little illegal. A box within a box within a box; coat closets rented out for double your monthly take home; and you had just about given up.
So this place seemed like a godsend: a brownstone, tucked away. Its interior is dated, but gorgeous. It had character: quirks and rich history in the brick and mortar. A fireplace tucked into the corner, window alcoves, wood panelling. Yes, the wallpaper was slightly warped with damp but itâs affordable - a reasonably priced gem that had made you jump when you saw the ad. With the overexposed and pixelated images, they didnât do it justice.
You pad into the kitchen, running your hands on the smooth countertops. Theyâre bare and spotless - suspiciously so. Not many personal items, no fridge magnets, photos; nary a blanket on the sofa or half eaten plate of toast on the worktop. Itâs so clean it feels staged, and it makes you squint. Isnât there meant to beâŠ
âI let Miguel know⊠he mustâve cleaned up the place-â
âMiguel?â
âThe other tenant.â He pauses, boots clicking on the grain of the floorboard. âI donât think heâll be back until later tonight. Should give you some time to settle in.âÂ
Nodding, you give him a small smile, and he steps out of the apartment. Your apartment.
~~~
You fill the rest of day with unpacking, putting some life into the place. Youâd visited not long ago, fantasising about how youâd decorate. Something about sharing an apartment with your boyfriend for the past 2 years had done something to you: flattening and squeezing into a space not built with you in mind. How Jamie didn't like things on the walls, or how he needed the space for his textbooks, so why don't you find somewhere else to put your little stories? If his desk took up half the front room, then that makes sense, he needs it for work. But God forbid you needed a quiet space to study; what if the guest bedroom has your shit everywhere when his friends come over? A million compromises that didn't seem much like compromises: you'd give an inch and he'd take a mile. And so, the space to spread your wings without knocking over a gaudy plaque or two was very much appreciated.Â
You want to walk around the neighbourhood, map out the convenience stores, bodegas, community hotspots and hubs. Where's the best place to get a drink? The cheapest meal? Your usual haunts were a fair distance away, so maybe you'll make the trek and pick up waffles from Pam's, as a treat. Tired already, you slump on the sofa - a tattered old thing that can clearly take a beating. Looking around the place, something settles solidly at your chest. Contentment, maybe, a strange feeling considering the past few months. This will do, you think. This will do.Â
Perhaps it's not a very feminist thought, but you're not thriving . Thriving felt presumptuous, and yet coping seemed too complete a word - its implication too tidy, too neat. A mess, before; better, nowâŠ? And it didn't quite span the width and depth of the past few months; how long it had taken for the numbness to make way to anger, hot and intense - its flame fueling many a long night. And yet, maybe coping was just the way to describe your foray into this new chapter: a new year, new apartment, and whatever that brings. You had forgotten what it felt like to be alone; not lonely, but with only your own self for company. Without the ache of another person, for the first time in a while.Â
âŠexcept, you had a roommate. Which you had known when signing the lease, of course, but it's taken some time to sink in. What that means for you - a new person to tiptoe around and appease - you're not too sure yet. What is he like? He's out late, so maybe a chronic partygoer - sloppy drunk and vivacious, the life of the party. He might clatter into the apartment, chattering and bubbly. What do you know about him? From the apartment, as is, it doesn't tell you much. At first glance, it had looked too clean, but not unreasonably so if he had anticipated your arrival. No, it was the lack of personal effects that confused you. How long has he been living here and there aren't any pictures or knick knacks? To clutter is to be human, you think. And with the front room as blank as it is, you wonder just what kind of man he is.Â
It's getting late. Naturally, you do some snooping, lazily padding around in search of life. Onwards and upwards, to new frontiers: the cupboards and drawers in your new apartment.Â
He likes coffee, you learn. There's a fancy machine on the kitchen counter, glossy and shiny and clearly taken care of. Little packets of beans and filters line the cupboards, all with names you can't quite pronounce. The fridge is similarly well-stocked, with none of the junk food you've gotten accustomed to in the past few months. Its innards are leafy green and plush; labelled tupperware with leftovers notwithstanding. All the spices in a tray above the oven and fancy knives on the wall tell you he likes to cook, or rather, he likes to eat well. The lack of junk would take some getting used to - maybe he's a health nut? The type to go on runs at the ass-crack of dawn, to blend oddly coloured smoothies, and "reflect" after a long day of⊠dog walking or something.Â
You move on to the living room, running a light hand over the deep walnut of a side table behind the sofa. Again, it's oddly bare. When you tug at the drawers, it's brassy handles are solid. Locked. Kneeling, you run a hand across the larger cupboard door at its base. You pull at it, and it pops open with a click. Inside, it seems empty, save for a dusty box nestled in the back corner. With your top half almost completely inside its depths, you move it into the light.Â
It's old, a battered shoebox adorned with coloured sharpie - shaky drawings of flowers blossoming from its sides. The cardboard crackles when you open it. It's full of junk, mostly: half-dead pens, broken crayons, dried flowers, and little plastic toys - the kind you get from cereal boxes and happy meals. And, there's something peeking out. Confused, you dig a little deeper, to uncover a pair of⊠soccer cleats? They're tiny, clearly for a kid but seem barely worn, with minimal scuffing on the plastic blades.Â
"What the fuck are you doing?" A voice from above rumbles, and your head snaps up like a rubber band. You hadn't noticed the door open, and you are met face to face with, who you assume to be, your roommate.Â
He doesn't shout: tall, broad, and back straight by the door. He's got a backpack slung over his shoulder, dressed in a crisp white shirt and slacks. His name was⊠Miguel? Miguel crosses his arms, brows furrowed in quiet rage. Fuck.Â
"I was just looking for.. uhhâŠ"Â
You know how it looks. It's the worst time for your brain to go blank, and you're left holding the hypothetical bag. You stand up a little too quickly, and smack your knee on the lip of the table. Half of the box spills onto the floor and you dart downwards, embarrassed.Â
" Shit. Sorry, let me-"Â
He leaps towards the floor, and you're forced behind him, as he scrambles to put everything in its place. You start to help and he stops, stock-still. As if in slow motion, his head turns to the side and he gives you a look that could kill thousands. Retreating, you shrink back, only able to watch helplessly.Â
" Chica tonta... Âżse criĂł en un rancho? ÂżquĂ© clase de persona entra en casa de alguien y toca todas sus cosas?" He's muttering something under his breath - too fast and not saying anything you can understand. Pausing, he throws you a look. "...y luego me ve como si yo fuera el que estĂĄ mal- ojos grandes y bonitos como de perrito pateado...oh dios mĂo.-"Â
[silly little girl⊠was she raised in a barn? what kind of person walks into someone's house and touches all of their stuff? // and she looks at me like I'm the one in the wrong - big, pretty eyes like a kicked puppy⊠oh my god-]Â
He's gentle with the box, the way he puts it in its place contrasting his mood a couple of seconds before. He closes up the door and you stumble to your feet. In the glow of halogen bulbs, he follows, arms crossed like a mother hen.Â
"I think⊠I think I'm your new roommate?" You say your name and stretch out a hand, but Miguel doesn't move. You watch as his eyes sweep over your body, shameless.Â
"Are you asking, or telling me?" He sighs, pinching at his temples.Â
"...Telling?" You offer him a weak smile, and he cracks.
Softening, ever so slightly, he grumbles. "I know. I know. Mr Estévez said you would be in tomorrow, though."
"I like to be early."Â
"Right. Well⊠don't do that. Again, I mean." He clears his throat. "Don't touch my shit either. It's too⊠fuck , it's too late for this. I'm going to bed."
He kicks off his shoes, and all you can do is watch as he saunters off; the door to his room shutting with a resounding slam .
~~~
His name is Miguel O'Hara - not that he told you that, or anything. He hasn't spoken to you much at all, leaving you to figure out who he is and what he does from vague clues around the apartment. You don't go snooping , learning quickly from previous mistakes; but his full name on a letter slotted through the mail was fair game, you think. The most you've gotten out of him were grunts and frustrated requests to keep to your shelf in the fridge.Â
Passive-aggressive wasn't in his vocabulary, youâre convinced. A plethora of dirty looks in his arsenal? Sure. Plenty of vulgar swears in Spanish? Absolutely. Miguel was not, however, passive-aggressive. Just⊠aggressive. Not angry, of course. Upfront. Abhorred any passivity and indolence: umm-ing and ahh-ing for the sake of it.Â
So naturally , you were sent to kill him.Â
You tiptoe around the apartment, avoiding him at all costs. At first, it wasnât on purpose, just the awkwardness of your first meeting bleeding into the next week. But you dodge and weave like an expert boxer -Â particularly impressive in the small space. Miguelâs in the kitchen? Suddenly, youâre not very hungry. Heâs curled up on the couch for a movie? Wow, look at the time: and you're heading to bed. You canât read him very well, and donât trust yourself enough to look him in the eye without fear of melting under his gaze. The few short interactions you have, you crumble; a brush against his shoulder in the kitchen, or legs against his on the dining table. Not that Miguel offers a peace branch, pursing his lips when youâd make eye contact, somewhat frustrated at your theatrics. Call it cliche: youâre avoiding confrontation at all costs. It manifests itself in peculiar ways: the Shower Incident being the most memorable.Â
The Shower Incident, aptly named, happened not too long ago. The apartment is old , as you soon learnt, coming with its own plethora of quirks. What you had first taken as character and charm - window seats and wood panelling - also came in the form of a building half falling apart. Creaky floorboards, leaky pipes, and a distinct lack of central heating. The discounted price, that had seemed like a bargain before, clearly lacked some creature comforts⊠like heating. And a working shower.Â
As youâd been in a rush, you clattered into the bathroom; stripping in no time at all. Bare feet on the tile, and you turn the knobs at the base of the shower unit. Youâre not going to pretend you know how it works, just yet, but⊠itâs not rocket science, is it? The brassy spout sputters; but with no luck. Groaning from the pipes makes you jump, before huffing in frustration. This is not the time; late to yet another 9.00am? You want to be different this year: organised, put together, and on time to your lectures. On your tiptoes, you peer down the shower head hesitantly, like itâs the barrel of a loaded gun. With cruel irony, it sputters to life, sending a face-full of ice-cold water your way.Thereâs a scream, as you scramble at the handles, scurrying out of its brunt; desperately trying to turn it off.Â
Unbeknownst to you, Miguel leaps out of his room towards the shouting, with a fumble and clunk of his feet on wooden floor. Heâs quick , hand hovering on the bathroom door before you can register it; his voice echoing outside.Â
âAre youâŠâ Thereâs scuffling, which you can just about hear over the pounding of the water against tiles. âAre you okay, in there?â
You wince, stepping out of the shower â legs shaky like a baby deer â as you gurgle. â...Yeah?â
âCan I ââ He clears his throat. âAre you.. clothed ? Can I come in?â
You scramble for something to cover yourself, settling for a plush towel on the rack. Wrapping yourself up, you brace yourself for the grimace that's sure to be on his face. Tentatively, you crack the door open. There Miguel is, face knitted with worry.Â
There's a flash of confusion at the scene, and then, what you think is relief. Relief you haven't cracked your head open, most likely: the blood would be hard to clean from the grout. You feel guilty, as you've probably broken it, or touched something you shouldn't. The shower is still on; sputtering, starting, and it becomes a strange sort of background music to your silent exchange.Â
"I don't know how to use the shower." You say with a small voice, guiltily.Â
" No me digasâŠ" No shit, he mutters, face back to the furrowed brow you're starting to become more familiar with. He sighs, easing up. "You hurt?"Â
You shake your head, and swear you see a small smile on his face. You looked like a waterboarded rat, probably: big watery eyes and shaking with the sudden cold.Â
A mess , he thinks. But not a bad view.Â
He's still in workout clothes from his morning run, compression shirt and lazy shorts that hug his ass on; as he turns towards the shower. With some sense of shame, you try not to stare, to not watch the muscles of his back and arms flex as he angles the shower head away from his face. It's not enough that you've embarrassed yourself â twice, in the space of a couple of days â but the fact it was in front of your roommate, who is maybe the most beautiful person you've seen up close. Which, granted, narrows the field; but Miguel is gorgeous, a flash of pink tongue sticking out as he concentrates, wide palms toggling the dial.Â
"You need to be careful⊠push it in slightly when you turn the-" You crane your head towards his movements. "Come closer, or you won't see what I'm doing."
You move towards him, half naked and shivering, trying not to buckle with the heat of his body next to yours. This is what you get for not having spoken to a man since your ex: a tight coil at the base of your stomach for someone that you've done nothing but unwittingly terrorise for the past week. Â
He explains, patient and even-tempered; how to use the shower and you half-zone out to the low tone of his voice. There's no malice, or pomp in his words when there are a million things he could make fun of you for - that Jamie may have made fun of you for. You look up, at the sharp lines of his face, and chew at your lip, deep in thought.Â
"...and this side is for hot water. Next time, just ask me â instead of almost drowning."
You nod, embarrassed. "Sorry."
"...For what?" He says, softly. "Place is falling apart, anyway. It's not really your fault." You're convinced everything you touch in this house breaks, but with the way he looks at you, you believe him.Â
"Just ask me, next time." He echoes and makes for the door, stopping to drag his eyes up and down your frame. Oh⊠oh. You like that, the way he looks at you shamelessly, practically undressing you.Â
He smiles, amused at your deer-in-headlights expression.Â
"...I think that's mine."
He nods to the towel wrapped around your body and your eyes bulge out of their sockets. " Fuck , I didn't realise-"Â
He shrugs, noncommittal.Â
"...Seems like you need it more than me, anyways."
~~~
It's a rough first couple of days, and then a week, and then two. The rhythm is all off: like the jerky stop and start of an old car. He wakes up early to go on runs at the ass-crack of dawn, and you stay up late to finish papers and assignments. He has a job, you think, darting out at the same time once or twice a week in smart clothing and a backpack. Sometimes, you catch him hunched over a laptop or scribbling something in a beat up old notebook. Maybe, heâs a student - even if he doesnât seem quite like the fresh-faced 19 year olds you see around campus. Although, you suppose itâs not implausible; you were one of the older people in your classes, after all. Itâs hard to imagine OâHara, stony-faced and serious, at a⊠dorm party, or something. To be that carefree, heâd need to get rid of that stick up his ass, first.
Youâve got a day off from lectures, using the time to catch up on the reading you shouldâve done over a hectic break. The list seems to go on and on, already, this early into the year. Internally, youâve made a promise to be on top of it all - the little hiccup with Jamie, notwithstanding. Youâd knuckle down this morning, reading ( scanning) and summarising ( liberal use of the copy-paste function) in preparation for the rest of the semester. Miguelâs locked up in his room, somewhere, so you use the opportunity to spread out onto the dining table.
Thereâs a knock at the door that makes you look up from the muddle of words on your screen.
When you open the door, thereâs a woman there with a notebook in hand. Sheâs pretty, in a classic sort of way, ginger braids cropped to her shoulders and lips slathered with gloss. Her outfit is relaxed, but carefully curated: a tight jumper and long brown legs stretching out from a black skirt.Â
âHi.â She says, visibly keening. Itâs clear she wasnât expecting you, but she quickly recovers and gives you a blinding smile.Â
â...Hi,â Honestly, youâre a little confused. You havenât seen her around the complex before; so who she was, you hadnât a clue. Too pretty to be a door-to-door salesman, and too hot to try to convert you to Mormonism, you think. Whatever that means.
You wait expectantly, as a beat passes.Â
âOh!â She laughs, and it sounds like puppies and rainbows, much too bright and airy considering the time of day. It makes her next words even more of a shock. âIâm looking for Miguel.â
With her last words, she steps a little closer; scanning the apartment from her vantage point. Something in you bubbles up, but you try to choke down the laughter.Â
âYouâre looking for...Miguel?â Even out of your own mouth, it sounds absurd . The man had no friends, as far as you could tell. He seemed like the type to lock himself away in his enclosure, only stepping out for work, school, the bare minimum. In the short week thatâs passed, his âenrichment timeâ had consisted of a dry documentary on spider mating cycles - which had been a shock to walk into, the first time.Â
So someone here, at the apartment? Looking for him? Fidgeting, you scratch at your neck. âUhh, I ca-â
âSorry about that, Jia. You can have a seat.â His voice comes from behind you, and Jia breezes into the apartment, perching on the sofa. Legs crossed, she reaches into her bag, taking out a laptop and a pen and paper. Heâs changed out of his workout clothes, donned in a loose white sweater and casual trousers - relaxed, for once. With a limp thud, you close the door. Thereâs an odd feeling as you look around at the scene: tension, and you feel like youâre interrupting. Miguel clatters around in the kitchen, fumbling for mugs and coffee filters and God knows what else.
â...was it two sugars, or three?â
âThree!â She throws over her shoulder, tapping away at her open laptop. âI like it sweet, Miguel.â
You squint. He laughs : a small chuckle that comes with a heat at the base of your stomach. Your head almost aches, trying to recalibrate; reconcile with the version of the person youâve barely seen around the apartment to now - present, engaged, and personable. Exasperated is the only word for it. Miguel OâHara was, in fact, capable of joy. Dickhead.
He barely acknowledges you, but Jia does; batting her wispy eyelashes in your direction, curious. The tapping stops, and she curls the corner of her mouth up with a hint of a smile.Â
âYou gonna introduce me?â She calls out to Miguel, and then smiles to you; warm and genuine. It makes you feel a little more at ease. You catch the end of a sigh coming from the kitchen.
âJia, this is my roommate.â He glances up to gesture towards you. â...this is Jia. I⊠help her out with work, sometimes.â
From the couch, she rolls her eyes. âHeâs too modest. Heâs my tutor, technically.â
With that, your eyebrows shoot up. Of everything youâd imagined him doing, tutoring students wasnât one of them - especially considering he seemed barely out of college himself.
â...Technically?âÂ
âHe doesnât like to advertise it, because heâs picky with his clientele.â She giggles and he scoffs. You get the feeling thereâs a joke flying over your head, just out of reach. âWord gets out on campus that Miguelâs tutoring againâŠâ
â Vale, vale ,â He grumbles, but his tone is good-natured and light. âSïżœïżœïżœenough, Jia.â
She gives you a wink, before turning towards her work.
You walk towards your things, still on the dining table. Heâs got his head buried in a kitchen cabinet and you look on, wanting to ask a lot of things. The words seem to die in your throat: too big, too small, not the right shape. She's a stranger; that knows where the coffeeâs kept and the best spot on the couch. That makes Miguel laugh . You want to ask him about the stranger in your home; but youâre too scared heâd turn and point the finger at you.
He walks to the couch, balancing two cups of coffee. You look back. Next to him, her presence is an oddity - a blip in his carefully crafted universe. With the warm sheen of familiarity, she nudges his shoulder. Taking careful sips, he pointedly ignores her, tapping a finger at her screen - as if to say, pay attention. She smiles, wide; an asteroid across the depths of space, dazzling and brilliant in the night sky.Â
The exchange⊠it makes you think. If Miguel is the Sun, and Jia, a bright body in orbit: whatâs your place in this four-walled cosmos? Where do you belong?Â
