The important thing is that Marcille did not learn to blaspheme against the natural order to save her girlfriend. She just happened to have studied the art of spitting in God's eye for wholly unrelated reasons, and when the opportunity by chance arose to employ that skill in service of girlfriend-saving, she was ready.

I guess religion wasn't as much of the point in Dungeon Meshi? While it's thematically interrogating Buddhist assumptions about the world (and dare i say challenging them) I don't see anything that's too close to real-life religions to actively critique them .

I think there's nothing wrong with making the connection to IRL religions - Dungeon Meshi works on worldbuilding, and worlds make sense when they draw from or resemble our own. I could see gnomic religion as an animistic thing, blended with some dharmic religious views on nonviolence. (Everything is alive as spirits are in everything, to consume a living thing is to consume spirits, this is morally incorrect, we still must live, therefore minimize the harm and avoid the consumption of animals) It's not unlike some Hindu/Buddhist/Jainist tenets, only not quite so extreme.

I'm curious whether Holm is actually a cleric of his faith (as the Healer Uniform lore suggests) or whther he's just especially devout. Either way, it is interesting that he would break this tenet (the comparison to a starving Muslim eating Pork is noteworthy). In Judaism there is the principle of "Pikuach nefesh" ("פיקוח נפש") which means "to save a soul/life", which is a principle that permits the violation of sacred law if it means saving a life. I can imagine doing this to save Falin would definitely count, especially given the political circumstances that were arising.

I would like to see more of how religion works in this world, too. There's something 'loosely secular' about how so many fantasy settings are - religion can too easily be either an overwhelming force embodied in a political institution, or else a nebulous individualized thing that gets trotted out for Superstitious Commoners to engage with, gets left to individuals and their personal God, rather than something more complex, like Greco-Roman or Indian religious practice.

I hope that (once she's finished with Baldur's Gate) Ryoko Kui does some spin-off work in this setting, or lets others folks play in it for a while. There's so much you can do with it!
