Scars
Scars left on his soul
Nothing left to have
All that’s left is a hole
Nothing left to hold.
She died
Heart broken
Committed suicide
Her life has ended
Nothing left for anyone
Nothing left for him
He now holds a heart of stone
While his eyes close and the
lights dim.
Now both are dead
All because of scars
No more hurt ahead
Both now living with the stars.

hospitals make miracles - r.donovan
hi guys ! this is my first fic and its not good whatsoever but figured id give it a shot haha, hope you enjoy !
wc: 1,623
warnings: minor swearing, mentions of injuries
-
you were a senior at andover high school on a roadie up to your annual trip in duluth. youve been taking this trip since your freshman year as you were one of the first players to ever make varsity as a freshman. that being said, this was your year, this was the year you had to show out. being named captain this season not only did you have to step up and lead the team, but you also had to focus on your game as it was your year to get scouted. you’d been looked at by minnesota-duluth, boston college, and minnesota, but all you wanted was to go to wisconsin, and this was your year to make it happen.
“y/n/n, are you ready to see all the hot duluth boys this weekend? i heard their varsity team plays at the same time of us and they have the wisco hot shot ryder donovan.” lilly said bouncing up and down in the seat next to you. you and lilly had been best friends ever since you met eachother at little wild camp 12 years ago. “y/n are you even listening”, “oh yeah sorry lil, just thinking about this weekend, did you know wisconsin scouts are gonna be there, i dont know if i can do this lil, i cant mess up, my future relies on this weekend” you exclaimed, trying not to freak out. “y/n/n you’ll be great i promise, but we should get some rest, weve still got 1.5 hours left and we’ve got a big game against east tonight.” you nod your head in agreement, dozing off into a deep sleep.
after an hour and a half of driving you arrive at the rink, getting up you fix your hair and adjust your sweats and parka and get ready to go grab your bag. after grabbing your bag, you start to head into the rink when you hear lil and ken start screaming, turning your head you see what all the fuss is about. and there he is. standing right before your eyes. ryder donovan. you’ve seen him in pictures as you followed him and some of his friends on instagram, but wow he was even prettier in person.
stumbling into the rink you make your way into the locker room gearing up to take the ice for warmups at duluth heritage. stepping onto the ice you complete your typical warmup of one-timers, slaps, and some stretching before noticing two big things in the stands. wisconsins top scout, and wisconsins top recruit, ryder. you didnt like it, but you just couldnt take your eyes off him.
the game begins and you take the ice playing your heart out making a clean goal through the five hole and racking in two more assists. after taking the ice to begin the last 20 mins of play, you get ready to take the faceoff for the third period. you win the faceoff clean and go to prepare to set yourself up to take a one-timer on the net. thats when tragedy strikes, when bringing your stick back to recieve the one-timer, before you know it you’re slammed into the boards on a cross check. tumbling down you hear a snap, a snap so loud that you watch the scout and ryder jump to their feet. as the athletic trainer scrambles to try and get you off the ice, you’re taken off the ice on a stretcher as you cant seem to put any weight on your right leg.
on the way to the hospital all you can think is why me, why now, why today. knowing it was probably your acl, you knew you were done for the season, that was it, it was over. scrolling through your twitter you saw your team won 5-2, which put your team in an excellent spot to start the season.
you arrived at the hospital and settled into your bed when a quite familiar but unfamiliar face walked into your toom. left speechless you see the 6’3 brunette standing in your doorway. “hey im ryder, i know you probably dont know me but i know you, you’re all the wisconsin scout has talked about for the past year and as im committed there i knew i had to see what the girls team is gonna have to offer and let me tell you, you looked incredible out there” ryder says shakily, messing with his fingers. you thank ryder and invite him into your room to sit on the chair. “trust me ryder i know you, youre all the girls have talked about after finding out that we played east this season, and youre committed to my dream school so theres that too, but theres no way the wisconsin scout wants anything to do with me, especially now that i have a double torn acl” you said, pointing down at your stitched up and wrapped knee, trying not to cry.
the next day, lil picked you up to bring you back to your hotel. on the car ride there you told her about everything that happened last night but when telling her you felt you sounded crazy, theres no way that thee ryder donovan went to visit YOU at the hospital and there’s absolutely no way that the wisconsin scout actually liked you. that was until you saw the instagram notification pop up on your screen... rydesdono would like to send you a message. you were shocked, theres no way that actually happened, but you opened the dm anyways to see what there was to say.
-
ryder donovan:
hey cutie, i never got your number last night and i was hoping we could catch up a little bit sometime if you feel up to it, i know with your knee it might not be easy, but i figured i would ask:)
you sat speechless. theres no way last night absolutely happened and there was absolutely no way he just called you “cutie”, but of course youre gonna meet up with ryder, no matter how much work it is
-
you:
hey rydes! id love to meet up with you again ! heres my number 952-***-****
-
thinking he might not actually text you because thats what hockey boys do, but sure enough you were proved wrong
-
maybe: ryder
hey y/n its ryder, pick you up at 6?
you:
absolutely, cant promise it’ll be easy with my knee and all, but i’ll make it work:))
rydes:
how about i pick us up food and bring it back to your hotel room, that way you can still have dinner with me but you can rest your knee at the same time;)
you:
that sounds great, ill make sure to leave the door unlocked
-
speechless you instantly call lilly and tell her everything, who freaks out the second you mention his name. as much as she doesnt believe it, you dont either. how is it that getting injured led you to a hot shot hockey player that is committed to the same school you are (yep thats right, wisco gave you an offer!!), one who’s actually genuine and nice AND insanely attractive. its mind blowing, but knowing theres no way this goes anywhere, as youd have to take the 2 hour drive back to andover in two days and probably wouldnt see ryder again until next year when you were both at wisconsin.
about an hour and a half later you hear two quiet knocks at your door, yelling “come in” at the sound. from your bed you see the cute hockey player who walks in from the doorway carrying the bag of food he got from grandmas, which happened to be your favorite restaurant in duluth. ryder sets the food on the table getting your food prepared so you didnt have to get up. he brings your food over to you and you invite him to sit next to you on your bed. you turned on your tv to the umd vs minnesota game as you rest your head on ryder who had just put his arm around you after you both finished eating. after talking for hours, that really felt like 10 mins, ryder decided that he should probably get back home and even if you didnt want him to go, you agreed.
for weeks after that you and ryder talked and talked for hours on end nonstop whether it was through snapchat, messages, or facetime. even though you only lived two hours apart, your schedules clashed too much to ever be able to meet up with eachother again. eventually after a year later you had completed your physical therapy and were ready to start your first year as a badger, but most importantly you were eager for ryder to get into town so you could hug the gorgeous brunette again.
when arriving at labahn, you were preparing yourself for the first day of practice and your next meet up with ryder, as the boys were using labahn as well as kohl center was undergoing some remodeling. you pull your bag out of your grand cherokee when you saw the brunette, and just like the first time you saw him your heart stopped. dropping your bag you ran in a dead sprint to see him as he dropped his bag and ran towards you wrapping his arms around your shoulders as if its been decades since youve last seen him as he held you for what felt like forever, when ryder whispered into your ear, “so hospitals really do make miracles happen” as he picked you up to kiss you before making your way into practice, knowing that without your injury you may have never found eachother the way you did.

when worlds collide - ryder donovan
chapter two wc: 6868
you pull the black sweatshirt over your body, the duluth east logo spread across the front, along with hounds hockey’ written across it. you swapped your black leggings for a pair of dark washed jeans, deciding you look decent enough for ryder’s game. you keep your hair down, running your fingers through it before grabbing your phone out of your pocket to send a mirror photo to ryder.
y/n: attachment: 1 image
how do i look?
rydes dono: rydes dono loved an image incredible
y/n: sorry, i’m probably messing up your pregame stuff, aren’t i?
rydes dono: not at all. i only just got to the rink, i’m not even in the locker room yet, no worries y/n/n
y/n: good, because i thought you also deserved to see a photo of our girl. i figured we could use it in our scrapbook thingy
attachment: 1 image
you send ryder a photo you had taken of saylor, where you grabbed an old hat you had from one of your american girl dolls and placed it on saylor’s head, along with a little button up jacket.
rydes dono: she almost looks as good as her mama
y/n: oh shush, donovan. don’t you have a hockey game to warm up for?
rydes dono: okay okay fine, i’ll let you go since you’re so eager to. sit as close to the glass as you can on the visiting side, and then i’ll meet you in the lobby after the game got that?
y/n: sounds perfect to me. see you after donovan:)
rydes dono: see you y/n
y/n: oh, and try to go easy on my dad, will you?
rydes dono: no promises;)
you find yourself smiling at your phone. your dad had already left about an hour ago, and all you were waiting for now was for josie to tell you she was here with kennedy. once you got that text from her, you were grabbing your lanyard and your baby carrier with saylor in it. william was long gone as well, along with your mother, leaving you the last to leave the house.
“there’s our favorite future donovan!” josie yells out her driver’s side window as soon as you step out of the house. you shake your head with a smile trying to hide your blush as you go to get into the back seat.
“oh come on, y/n. you gotta give us more details. because i’ve been on the edge of my seat since you told us about class today,” kennedy says, looking over her shoulder at you as josie pulls out of your driveway. of course, the second you had told kennedy about the little incident - or moment, rather - in child development, kennedy went insane. as predicted.
you heave out an exaggerated sigh, grabbing your phone from the pocket of ryder’s sweatshirt and opening it to your messages thread with him, then handing your phone to kennedy. as soon as she sees the name at the top her eyes are lighting up.
she starts mumbling the texts you guys were sending back and forth, and a gasp falls from her lips. “y/n m/n!” kennedy screeches, whipping around in her seat to shove your phone in your face, as if you didn’t already know what the text messages say. you have a shy smile on your face. “he likes you, you big idiot!”
“i wanna know!” josie yells, stopping at a stop light. “gimme her phone, i wanna see!” kennedy hands josie your phone, and josie starts yelling just as loud as ken had been. “kennedy’s right! i don’t know why you’re saying he doesn’t!”
“okay, okay, gimme my phone,” you giggle holding your hand out for josie to give you your phone as the light turns from red to green. you see ryder had snapped you, so you open up snapchat and see ryder along with logan and ricky. ryder is in the middle of laughing, ricky is smirking and logan is grinning like a fool. you can’t help but screenshot the photo. “look at our boys!” you give your phone right back to kennedy who begins to squeal.
“look at logan!” she gushes, and from the backseat you can see the grin on the blonde’s face.
josie pulls into the parking lot of the duluth heritage sports center, looking over her shoulder at you with a smile. “ready to see your baby daddy?”
“shut up!” you laugh, reaching forward to hit josie’s arm. the three of you get out of the car, you reaching over to grab saylor’s carrier. you walk into the arena with the girls by your side, already earning a few weird looks from people in the lobby. “i knew this was gonna happen.” you grumble.
josie sighs, “they’re just judgemental people, y/n. don’t worry about it. it’s not like the baby is real or anything.”
“ryder likes to think so,” you roll your eyes at the thought, following the girls to the ticket booth to buy your tickets for the east game. once all three of you have your tickets you walk into the rink that’s still fairly empty, going straight towards the front row behind east’s net.
“i know dono wanted us by denfeld, but, that’s not gonna happen,” kennedy sighs, getting comfortable in the seat to the left of you and pulling out her phone, smiling when she saw that logan had snapped her. “look!”
you and josie both giggle at the blonde's reaction, watching her blushing cheeks as she fumbled to unlock her phone. she opens the snap and her smile widens, angling her phone towards you to see the photo of ryder and logan. “smile!” kennedy says, and you do so before she snaps the photo and sends it to logan.
“i wouldn’t plan on him answering you, kenny. boys got a pregame schedule, you know that,” you advise her and kennedy nods, knowing exactly what you meant. kennedy wasn’t exactly a stranger when it came to hockey boys.
“yeah, he sent me that ten minutes ago. they’re probably gonna get ready to- never mind!” kennedy starts to giggle as the red box appears next to logan’s name, and then you feel your phone buzz in your hand.
rydes dono:
tell kennedy she’s throwing my boy off, he can’t stop smiling at his phone
you laugh out loud, quickly typing a response.
y/n: as if i’m not throwing you off yours? ryder donovan aren’t you supposed to be warming up soon?
rydes dono: been thrown off since you sent me that photo an hour ago, not gonna lie y/n/n
rydes dono: and only gonna be more thrown off when we come out to warm up, that im sure of
“would you look at that! ryder donovan, flirting with you in plain sight. come on, y/n. even a blind person would be able to see that,” josie says as she reads your texts from over your shoulder, a smug smirk on her face. “god, you’re both goners.”
y/n: don’t blow it, dono. it’s a big game for you guys.
it’s only a matter of time before the rink starts to really fill up. you’re minding your own business, looking down at your phone before kennedy starts to repeatedly hit your arm. “y/n, y/n, y/n, y/n!” she squeals, pointing up towards the walk way the teams normally warm up on.
sure enough, ryder is leading his team out to start their warm ups and logan is right behind him. you watch as ryder slowly starts to scan the home section, and once his eyes land on you you watch as a smile crosses his lips. he stops dead in his tracks causing logan to run into his back, and then logan shoves ryder to get him moving. you watch their lips move, but of course you can’t hear what they’re saying, but ryder shakes his head and laughs as he begins to lead the boys in leg stretches.
“okay, that was adorable,” josie smiles over at you. “he’s got it bad, y/n. and i’m the first one to call it.”
kennedy’s mouth drops open and she leans forward to look at josie, “nu uh! i was. cool it, jose. i called the first shot.” kennedy pouts, her arms crossing over her chest. but regardless of how annoyed she is, her eyes are trained on logan and there’s a smile forming on her face.
“y/n!” you hear the voice of the girl you expected to be here, but hoped to god she wouldn’t be. her hand rests on your shoulder and you turn around to face her. “love the sweatshirt. surprised ryder would actually let you wear it, you know, he doesn’t give his sweatshirts to just anyone. i think i would know.”
your eyes narrow at the brunette girl, “someone’s jealous she’s never worn dono’s sweatshirt, isn’t she?” you ask keira, and besides her one of her friends has to hold back her laugh.
“yeah, no. dono’s not exactly my speed… anymore.” keira rolls her eyes before sitting back in her seat allowing you to face forward once again.
“just ignore her, y/n. chances are she’s lying,” kennedy mumbles next to you, low enough that keira can’t hear you. “plus, would ryder even go for a girl like her? i highly doubt it. you’re much better than her, and i don’t think i’m biased.” kennedy’s nose is turned up, a sweet smile on her face.
“thank you ken, i love you.”
“love you too, y/n/n.”
you smile at kennedy, looking down at your phone as you feel a buzz.
rydes dono: was keira giving you any trouble?
y/n: what do you mean? and you’re not supposed to be on your phone right now
rydes dono: i saw her talking to you. just let me know if she says anything to you alright? i’ll deal with her
y/n: got it. talk to you after the game, rydes. and good luck:)
rydes dono: thank you y/n. i’ll see you after, and that sweatshirt still better be on.
you can feel the presence of your two best friends looking over both of your shoulders. “you’re delusional, y/n. i swear.” josie shakes her head, arms crossing over her chest as she stares out towards the ice where the boys were bound to come out at any moment.
“do you guys not realize how flirty ryder is? he’s like this with everyone. at this point you guys are really just getting my hopes up.”
“y/n that boy took one glance at you and he fell head over heels - should i say skates? for you.”
“kenny, you’re the one with a little bit of inside knowledge, why don’t you spill?” josie asks, leaning forward to look at the blonde. kennedy looks like a deer caught in the headlights, eyes wide and frozen in place. she had been caught. “kennedy ann. if you don’t tell us all the information you have right now i’m not buying you caribou on monday.”
kennedy’s eyes glane around, her eyes lighting up when she thinks of an excuse. “i have to go to the bathroom!” she announces rather loudly in the rink, rising from her seat. you grab the fabric of her sweatshirt and yank her back down in the seat.
“kenny if you leave now you’ll miss logs come out for warm ups. you don’t want that, do you?” you cock your head to the side, waiting for kennedy’s reaction. she lets out a sigh, sinking into her seat, folding her arms in her chest. “that’s what i thought.”
“yeah yeah, whatever,” the blonde grumbles under her breath, eyes glued to where the boys would eventually come out for their warm ups. “but just so you know? my lips are sealed.” kennedy puts her thumb and index finger to her lips, mimicking a zipper across her lips before folding her arms across her chest once more.
“so, big sister. did our boy william give his jersey to any lucky girl tonight?” josie asks, and as if it would help, you turn around in your seat into the sea or black and red. everyone pretty much looks the same, and you suck in a breath.
“yeah, i dunno, actually. i’d assume he’d tell me, but, who really knows? will doesn’t really like giving his jerseys out, it’s a superstition type of thing i guess you could call it.” before josie could respond, because obviously kennedy wouldn’t be, you hear saylor start to cry at your feet.
“duty calls, mama,” josie smirks as you reach down to pick up the baby. you let out a sigh, and as if the timing couldn’t be any more perfect, that’s the moment the boys run out to the ice.
you rock the doll in your arms as you grab the set of colored keys, grabbing the blue one for food and holding it up to the doll's chest. you look up at the ice, eyes glued to the number 22 for a few seconds, but your attention then goes back to saylor who’s still crying. you then grab the yellow key for a diaper change, and just like that she stops crying.
you place her back in the carrier, and when you look back up, ryder is skating by, eyes glued to you as he does so. “look, look, look, look!” kennedy squeals from beside you, her hands repeatedly slapping your fabric covered arms. “look at logan!” her cheeks flush pink as she watches the dirty blonde skate right behind ryder, a smile mirrored to ryder’s on her face.
“thought your lips were sealed, kennedy?” you ask smugly, and as soon as kennedy realizes she had said something she lets out a groan, her head falling back in her seat.
“did we really think it was going to last that long, y/n/n?” josie has an amused smile on her face, clearly entertained at the fact kennedy didn’t even last a full five minutes. you shake your head, eyes scanning the ice for the number 17, and when you spot william, of course he’s glued to ryder’s hip as they sit in the neutral zone to do stretches together.
“look at him,” you pout, pointing to where the two boys are, and it isn’t too long before logan skates up right next to them making sure to cover them in snow.
“look at him!” kennedy mimics you, her eyes doe like as she stares at the boy she fancied for nearly two years now. ken lets out a blissed sigh, like she always did, and keeps her eyes trained on logan. but you can’t blame her, because you’re doing the exact same thing for ryder.
you watch the boys as they warmed up, going through their normal sequence of doing shooting drills, their own stick handling, and stretches. ryder ends up right in front of you behind the net with a pile of pucks, passing them out to the two lines the boys formed to do one timers.
ryder starts to skate slowly, his eyes scanning over their side of the eyes spending a few seconds looking over his team. that doesn’t last too long, however, as ryder is looking to the right and logan comes up from the left, hitting ryder into the boards right in front of where you and the girls are sitting. the two boys laugh, both of their heads turning to look at you and kennedy. your eyes meet ryder’s and he gives you a soft smile, gloved hand raising off his stick to wave at you. you give your own shy wave to ryder before he gives you one last smile and skates away with logan behind him.
william is the next of the pack to make his appearance, a huge smile on his face as he skates past making sure to wave at the three of you. he stops besides logan and ryder, the three of them talking before william skates off to garrett.
eventually, warm ups end and both teams leave the ice so they can zam it. you watch your dad walk off the visitor’s bench and into the locker room, already knowing this game wasn’t going to end well. you hear kennedy sigh, “gosh, our boys are so cute.”
“your boy is so cute,” you correct her, earning a pout from kennedy. “what? i’m not wrong. logan’s your boy.”
“and ryder is yours whether you like that or not,” josie points out and you glare at her. “what? i’m not wrong?” she mocks you. “come on. ryder would not interact with you like that if he didn’t have some feelings towards you.”
you let out a frustrated sigh. “i’ll believe it when he tells me. and he wont.” you say, giving the brunette a pointed look before you feel your phone vibrate in your hand.
rydes dono: that picture didnt do you any justice y/n
y/n: what’s that supposed to mean? and ryder, get off your phone, i’m serious. you are not going to get in trouble because of me.
rydes dono: you look better in person than the photo. and dont worry about me
y/n: too late i am. i’ll text will to get you off your phone
rydes dono: okay fine i’m going i’m going! bye y/n, i’ll see you after the game.
y/n: see you ryder
“oh come on, you have that smile on your face and you’re trying to tell us you don’t like him and that he doesn’t like you? that’s bull, y/n.” josie grabs your phone out of your hand, scrolling to look at your messages, stopping at the ones from earlier again. “seriously, y/n.” with a shake of her head josie locks your phone and hands it back to you.
“he’s telling you without telling you. he isn’t upfront with his emotions, so this is his way of saying it,” kennedy says, trying her best to get through to you. “being friends with logan has its perks, you know. i know more about ryder than you think i do.”
“guys can we please not talk about this right now? at least not when i’m here. i’ll be back, i’m just gonna go grab a drink i guess.” without another word you get up from your seat, exit your row and start up towards the stairs that lead out to the main concourse.
no part of you wants to believe ryder actually likes you. because you know in the end, chances are you’d get hurt. that’s the type of guy you thought ryder was - pure happiness in the moment but it would only be a matter of time.
you let out a sigh walking up to the snack stand, scanning the options as if you hadn’t already memorized them and couldn’t recite them like the back of your hand. out of the corner of your eye you can see a brunette girl that can’t be any older than fourteen staring at you. you try to ignore her to the best of your ability, but you ultimately fail when you look over at her.
“who are you?” she asks, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion as she glances to the number on the sleeve of ryder’s sweatshirt.
you give the girl a skeptical look, glancing towards the line as it slowly moves forward. “who are you?” you retort.
“i asked you first.”
since she glanced to the number, you figured she at least knew who ryder was seeing as that was her main focus. “i’m y/n. i’m ryder donovan’s-”
she cuts you off with a gasp, her eyes widening. “you’re y/n! ryder’s partner for that baby thing!” she exclaims, and as soon as the words leave her lips you can feel the heat on your cheeks.
“and who are you?”
she smiles, “clara. ryder’s little sister.”
yeah, not exactly how you planned to meet - part of - ryder’s family.
“well it’s nice to meet you clara. i know it’s only a little project we’re doing together, but it’s still nice to meet at least one of ryder’s siblings,” you give her a smile, taking a step forward as the line moves forward once again. “do you want anything?” you ask, gesturing towards the snack stand. she’s hesitant. “come on, clara. it’s the least i can do.”
clara lets out a sigh with a smile on her face. “i’ll make sure ryder pays you back, okay? but an icee sounds really good right now.”
“good choice, girlfriend. that’s exactly what i was gonna get,” you smile down at the young girl. “what flavor?”
“blue raspberry please. if you like any other flavor you’re insane,” she jokes and you can’t help but let out a laugh.
you step forward since you’re ready to order, ordering you and clara both medium sized icees and handing the cashier a five dollar bill. you drop the change into the tip jar and it only takes a few seconds before you’re handed the icees and you give one to clara.
“thank you, y/n,” she smiles gratefully at you and you nod. “you know, i’m a little shocked he gave you this.” clara gestures towards your sweatshirt and you can’t help but let out a laugh as the two of you walk through the concourse.
“you know, that’s what everyone has been saying.”
clara shrugs as she sips on her icee, the brims of her mouth already starting to turn a vibrant blue. “it’s the truth. ryder doesn’t let anyone wear his hockey clothes. he doesn’t even let me! and between you and me, i’m his favorite.”
“clara i like you already,” you laugh, nudging the girl in her ribs gently. “i’ll walk you to where you’re sitting okay?”
clara nods and you do exactly as she says, waving to the small brunette that resembled ryder in an uncanny way. you walk back to your seat, not even noticing the grin on your face until kennedy pointed it out.
“what’s got you so smiley, y/n/n? because ryder wasn’t out there.” kennedy teases. you had been gone so long they already cut the ice and the boys were out waiting for the opening face off.
“yeah, your smile is kinda freaking me out. not gonna lie,” josie mumbles, stealing a sip of your icee. “still cannot understand how you drink blue raspberry.”
you ignore josie’s comment, “i met ryder’s little sister. and she’s the sweetest thing ever.” you smile, eyes trained on ryder as he goes to take the opening faceoff. your two best friends both gasp and you grin. “so that happened.”
“did she know who you were?” kennedy asks as the game goes officially underway. the three of you keep your eyes on the ice, but still focused on each other.
“that’s the thing,” you smile to yourself. “she saw the sweatshirt. so i said my name and i started to say how i was ryder’s partner, but she already knew that. so either all he did was talk about the project to his family or he actually talked about me.”
“it’s also not uncommon to know you, y/n/n. you’re will’s sister. instead of people ging up to will and saying, ‘you’re y/n’s little brother!’ you get, ‘you’re will’s older sister!’” you laugh at josie because she was absolutely 100% right. will was on pace for a sixty point season - as a freshman. in high school.
your eyes go to the number 17, watching as will skates up to hit a player on denfeld - and will isn’t the smallest either, so you watch as the boy in white falls to the ice. when he falls, it seems like all of east’s student section is on their feet cheering for will as he receives a pass from logan. you and the girls are banging on the boards, a wide smile on your face.
“that’s my baby brother!” you laugh, unable to contain your smile. you look over to the bench, seeing your dad shaking his head with a soft smile on his face. only one that you or will would be able to tell was a smile, though. because to anyone else it would look like a frown.
logan stops quickly, dropping his pass to will who skates behind denfeld’s net and quickly banks the pass to ryder. will scrambles to get in front of the net, battling it out with one of denfeld’s defensemen as ryder takes the slapshot. will jumps to try and get out of the way of ryder’s shot, but his stick tips it right over shawn easty’s right shoulder and into the net.
“will!” you jump up in excitement, everyone along the boards banging on the glass as ryder throws his arms around your younger brother who’s almost as tall as him on skates.
“that’s goal number, what. twenty-five on the season?” josie asks from besides you, her eyes glistening. you turn back to face the ice, watching william go through the handshakes on the bench before the second line goes out. you look to your dad, his shoulders dropping as he lets out a sigh, hand going up to run down his face.
“goal twenty-five of the season.” you confirm before sitting back down in your seat with a smug smile on your face. “ryder wasn’t joking when he said they were going down tonight.”
kennedy lets out a giggle, “c’mon, y/n. has that kid ever even had a bad game a day in his life? it’s ryder freaking donovan for crying out loud!”
the first period ends, you having to tend to saylor only once or twice, luckily making you miss the goal denfeld scored to tie the game up at one a piece. but there was still thirty-four minutes of hockey to play, and you had complete faith in ryder and your boys.
just like normal, you and the girls talk amongst each other and scroll through your phones. if the boys were able, you’d text will and ryder about how they both played an amazing first period. but since they wouldn’t be able to, you sit through what feels like an eternity of the girls teasing you.
the second period doesn’t exactly go as planned.
halfway through the second period, denfeld ends up scoring a goal, making them lead 2-1. ryder slams the blade of his stick on the bench out of frustration, his head shaking and you can see him yell a few colorful words before he jumps over the bench. you couldn’t blame him - the defense had been struggling that night.
“they’ve got time, y/n. plenty of time,” josie reassures you, placing her hand on top of yours and giving you a quick smile. you nod, knowing she’s right. but every minute that goes by, the chances of the boys winning dwindle down. even with there being twenty minutes after the third period - denfeld would have most of the momentum to try and finish it off.
you just pray will doesn’t get into his own head. if he did that, he wouldn’t be able to live up to his potential and his normal game. and this was the game he really needed it, because you knew that boy wanted to show your dad in the worst way what he was capable of - and if it had to be against his own team, so what? makes even more of a statement. if there was anything one needed to know about william, it was that he loved making statements.
when the boys come out for the third period, ryder makes his quick one lap around their side of the ice. when he he passes by you he gives you a soft smile, before once again, going to take the opening faceoff for the period. a clean win for ryder and he passes it back to logan, who then attempts a pass to ryan but it gets intercepted by a denfeld forward who then breaks away towards lukan.
lukan is in position, shuffling along and following where cole olson was skating. but lukan isn’t enough for cole, who’s release is quicker than he originally anticipated. the puck flies over his shoulder, and at the opposite side of the rink denfeld’s student section goes wild.
“it’s over.”
“kennedy don’t say that!” you sigh, but you can’t help think of it yourself. the boys are exhausted from rushing from each side of the ice, and you weren’t sure if they’d be able to keep up for the remaining seven minutes of the period.
coach randolph shakes his head and his hand rubs over his mouth before he calls for a time out. surprisingly enough, he doesn’t yell at his team and quickly draws out a game plan for them. when the ref blows the whistle, ryder’s line goes out for a center ice draw.
ryder takes a quick little turn around center ice before he sets up for the face off. he loses it, denfeld’s center passing it back to a defenseman. will ends up pickpocketing him, passing the puck to logan and letting logan enter the offensive zone. he dekes the defenseman and fakes his shot to the right of the goalie, but tucks it in on the left.
“that’s my boy!” kennedy squeals, her arms wrapping around you out of excitement as she jumps up and down. “he said he was gonna score for me tonight. and he did!”
you laugh, pulling away from the blonde. “he did,” you confirm, glancing up to the scoreboard. there were two minutes left and east was only down by one. so if they were able to pull this off, you’d go to overtime and hopefully finish the job. but anything can happen.
“they’re gonna do this, they have to,” josie mumbles to herself seeming as if she’s trying to convince herself more than anything. you grab her hand as ricky’s line goes out, squeezing it hard.
the clock continues to tick down, the puck seeming to stay more in the neutral zone more than anything, but once the boys are able to get it into denfeld’s zone it’s like they’re trying anything and anything. but easty is able to stop and block mostly all the pucks that he faces - until ricky tucks the puck in his five hole.
“did he just score?” kennedy asks in disbelief, her eyes staying on the ice before she finally pulls them away to look at you and josie who mirrored her expression. but judging by ricky’s celly, he had most definitely scored, and the refs weren’t calling it off.
“holy shit.”
the clock ticks down until the end of regulation leaving for what would for sure be an end-of-your seat worthy overtime period. randolph of course starts out with ryder, will, and grant as their starting three. right away, denfeld is starting down towards lukan, but he makes a quick glove save allowing a quick little rest for the boys. ryder wins the faceoff, passes it to grant before grant is starting down the ice. he passes the puck to will, who goes to pass to ryder, but then will gets tripped and slides right into easty in front of you. the whistle blows, but one of denfeld’s players immediately goes to roughhouse with will.
“he didn’t do anything!” kennedy screams as if the boys could hear her through the glass. “god you’re a fucking idiot, aren’t you?”
you shake your head at kennedy, but your eyes then go to ryder who yanks the denfeld player off will. he doesn’t hesitate to cross check the kid and exchange a few words with, and for a split second you were worried ryder would actually end up fighting the kid. but he was smarter than that.
the ref breaks the two of them up and points ryder in the direction to the penalty box. you read ryder’s lips, who lets out an, “are you fucking kidding me?” before taking his helmet off and running his hand through his hair.
yeah, it was a sight.
“look at him,” josie sighs, and you look over at her with furrowed eyebrows.
“please, jose. back off my baby daddy.”
kennedy and josie both let out ear piercing screeches and you shake your head with a smile at the two of them, surely not doubting the fact your cheeks were surely flaming red. you bite back your smile, your attention going to the game unfolding in front of you. a majority of the overtime period is spent in denfeld’s end, but none of the shots seem to go past easty. the time on ryder’s penalty ticks down, and you watch as the puck gets taken back into east’s zone. just as the boys kill the penalty, will gets a hold of the puck and shoots it over to ryder who sprints down the ice on the breakaway.
he’s skating right towards the net, right where you and the girls are sitting, a look of pure determination on his face. he dekes out easty, puck going over his shoulder and into the net. you jump up, a grin on your face as ryder spins around, his hand lifting off his stick to point to you. you bang on the boards as he skates over, his back hitting the boards as will and grant tackle him in a hug.
will gives you a little wave as your student section goes crazy before the boys all go to high five the bench. then they do post game handshakes, and then you, kennedy, and josie are headed out to the lobby where you told the boys you’d meet them.
“that was crazy! did you see that move, y/n! the hands on that kid, wow, i just-”
you cut kennedy off in the middle of her excitement by placing a hand on her arm. “kenny, breathe. but yes, that was an absolute gorgeous goal. i mean come on, it’s ryder.”
“i wouldn’t expect anything less from the kid, honestly. he pulled through when he needed to,” josie shrugs her shoulders and there’s a smile on her face. “and not to mention ricky’s tying goal.”
“so all three of our boys scored tonight, i see that as a win,” you smile, and of course that’s when saylor starts to cry. you sigh, setting her down on the bench along the wall in the lobby to rock her before grabbing the keys. you fumble with them, grabbing the blue one for food, and she immediately stops crying. “and now, it’s a waiting game.”
like normal, it takes about twenty minutes until the boys slowly start to come out into the lobby to find their friends and family waiting for them. your eyes stay trained to the door, and when you see the blonde haired boy followed by your little brother, you can’t help the grin on your face.
“there’s my superstar,” you smile sheepishly at ryder, who tries to hide his smile by biting his lip.
“i’m not the superstar, willy is,” ryder shakes his head slightly with a smile, logan and ricky both following after him. ryder somewhat shocks you by wrapping his arms around your body, and in turn you wrap your arms around his neck.
before you end up doing something stupid, you pull away from him. “yeah right, says you. you had the game winner. you don’t need to be humble about it rydes.”
ryder rolls his eyes, “i’m serious, y/n. your brother was the star of the show tonight.” he says while running a hand through his still damp hair from his shower.
“both of you were.”
ryder shakes his head and you scowl at him, “nope, all willy. speaking of, you should probably go talk to him and your dad.”
“but rydes,” you pout, your hand fumbling with the fabric of his dress shirt. you ignore the looks you’re sure your friends are giving the both of you, and ryder smiles down at you, hand reaching to brush a strand of hair behind your ear, lingering there for a few more seconds than either of you anticipated.
“sweets, it’s okay. i have to go talk to my family. we’ll meet back here in five minutes, okay?” you still pout, but your cheeks blushing pink at the nickname. ryder’s eyes look over your shoulder where you assume his family is still waiting for him.
“five minutes tops, dono, you got that?” you ask, your pointer finger jammed right on his chest as you look up at him with the most stern look you can muster. but it’s ryder, and he looks right through that.
ryder smiles, his hand wrapping around your wrist to set it back at your side. “okay, y/n/n.”
“okay, i’ll see you in a few.”
“yes you will, and take ken with you. i don’t need logan making googly eyes are her while trying to talk to his family.”
you glance over to kennedy and logan. kennedy is a blushing mess as she talks to logan, and being completely honest? logan doesn’t look that much better either. you smile and then turn back to ryder, “i will, she’ll want to see her superstar anyway. oh and rydes? try not to miss me too much.”
ryder pouts, “i thought i was your superstar. and don’t worry, you’re always on my mind, baby mama.”
you can feel your heart flutter in your chest. “you’re my superstar. meaning you’re only mine. but i share willy.” you say with blushing cheeks. “and don’t try to flatter me, dono.”
“you’re right, i am all yours. and it’s not flattery if it’s the truth, l/n.”
with that, ryder sends you a wink before walking towards his family. “ken, c’mon, we’re gonna go talk to will really quickly.” you call, taking kennedy’s attention away from logan. she pouts, but you raise your eyebrows at her.
“okay, okay! i’ll be right back, log.” she presses a quick kiss to logan’s cheek before she walks over to you. “did you see that, did you see that?” she giggles like a school girl that had her first kiss. “but y/n, you’re coming with us to old chicago by the way. ryder was gonna ask you to go.”
you smile, trying to bite your lip. “got it.” you reach your family, and just like you had suspected there’s a bit of tension. but that doesn’t mean you hesitate on throwing your arms aroun your little brother. “willy you played so good buddy.”
will laughs in your arms, wrapping his own around you. “thanks, y/n/n. it was a great game to play in.”
when the two of you pull away you allow kennedy to hug your brother while you hug your dad. “sorry daddy. you guys had your moment.” you joke with him and he gives you a half hearted smile.
“it’s okay, honey. win some you lose some. but do you have any plans after or are you gonna go home with us?” your dad asks, and you look over at kennedy hoping your parents wouldn’t see your blushing cheeks.
“oh lord,” your mother sighs, but nonetheless there’s a smile on your face. “what’s that look for?”
“jose, ken and i are gonna go out to eat i think, right ken?” you ask and kennedy nods. “of course if that’s okay with you guys.”
you mom shrugs before she looks over at your dad. “i don’t see why not. just make sure you’re home by midnight okay?”
you’re nodding right away. “okay momma. i’ll see you guys later. bye, i love yous!” you blow a kiss to your family and kennedy says her goodbyes before heading back over to the group where the boys all came back from talking to their families. logan nudges ryder and he looks up, a smile on his lips when he sees you.
“i’d like to let you know, y/n/n, you took five minutes and ten seconds.” ryder says, half smirking as he puts his phone into the back pocket of his dress pants.
you roll your eyes with a smile as you reclaim your spot right next to him. “oh shut up rydes.”
“i’m just saying.” ryder puts his hands up in defense, and you shake your head laughing at him before you look up at him with a smile.
“but i’m here now, and that’s what matters right?”
“right.”
“that’s what i thought rydey,” you can’t even get the nickname out without blushing, and you watch as ryder’s face turns pink as he smiles.
“let’s just go get food.” he shakes his head laughing. “and i hope that’s okay with you, because we’re forcing you to come with.”
you shake your head, “it’s not force if i wanna go, is it rydes?”
ryder chuckles, his cheeks turning an even darker shade of pink. “well then why aren’t we in my car already?”
“what are you waiting for, dono? lets go.”

being from the same hometown as ryder but you guys went to separate colleges for sports and then reuniting and spending summer together
“Ryder Donovan,” you call, trying not to smile too big. You knew that crazy blonde hair anywhere and as he turns around you suck in a breath. Had he always been that cute?
His smile matched yours as he stops what he’s doing and closes the distance between you two. He gives you a big hug, squeezing a little before he lets you go. One year away at college and Ryder had grown up a lot, but you really weren’t complaining.
“I was wondering when you’d be back in town. How are you?” He asks, holding you at arms length as he looks you over.
You can’t help but giggle, holding onto his forearms, “I’m good, I had a softball camp down south before I came home. When are we going fishing?”
He lets out a laugh that sounds better than being told your final exams were all cancelled and you can’t ignore this swirling feeling in the pit of your stomach. This was just Ryder. What was going on?
“We can go fishing whenever you want. You know where my house is so stop over any time. I’m sure my mom would love to catch up with you.”
You agree to meet up there the next day, having missed his family like they were your own. Duluth felt special that summer. Maybe it was because you’d finally left or because you were just starting to appreciate it more as you got older. Something told you that summer was going to be different though.
You hang out with Ryder almost every day that summer, the two of you practically attached at the hip. You’d done everything from work out together to drive down to Minneapolis to see a Twins game.
You quickly find yourself falling for him and you can’t help but wonder if he’s on the same page. The first inkling that it could be the same for him is at a bonfire your friends have, when you come outside to find no open seats left. Ryder is quick to reach for your hand and pull you onto his lap.
“You can sit by me, I don’t mind,” he says, his arms wrapping tight around your waist.
You relax into him, noticing a couple girls watching the two of you. Maybe it also had to do with the fact you had one of his Duluth East hockey sweatshirts on, but you tried to ignore the extra attention.
He keeps you on his lap for the rest of the time, not complaining once that you might be too heavy or sitting wrong and putting one of his legs to sleep. That part you notice when he stands up at the end of the night and winces, complaining about the prickling sensation in his foot.
He gets you home safe that night with the promise of picking you up the next morning to go and get brunch. Things feel a little different after that night.
You’re barely awake enough to function when he does pick you up the next morning, only managing to slip on his sweatshirt again and a pair of gym shorts. You don’t realize until you get to the diner that he’s watching you intently, almost like the girls had the night before.
“What? You’re not supposed to stare, Rydes. I know your mom taught you better than that,” you smirk, sipping your hot coffee.
He smiles, nodding a little, “yeah, sorry. I just was thinking.”
“About what?”
“Nothing,” he spits out quickly, his eyes widening a little.
You shake your head, letting it die off but it isn’t the last time that summer you catch him looking too long. You just hope he didn’t catch all the times you looked at him for too long.
The weeks fly by and you spend more time with him than anyone else. A couple weeks before you both have to get back to school he picks you up randomly, taking you to go on the family boat with him.
You keep asking him what this was for but he kept saying he just needed you to cooperate with him. You argue that you don’t even have a swimsuit on but he swears you won’t need it. You reach over and grab his chin when he gets to a stop sign, forcing him to look at you.
“Ryder,” you warn, “I need you to tell me what we’re doing.”
He gives you the softest smile you think you’ve ever seen and you know you can kiss your heart goodbye right then and there. You fell hard for him that summer and you were pretty sure he had your heart for good after that.
“Trust me, okay? I’ll keep you safe,” he says, tipping his chin down and kissing your hand.
You sit quietly next to him the rest of the way, following him onto the boat as he drives out to the middle of the lake. He drops anchor and you notice it starting to get dark out. You frown and follow him to the back row, stretching out next to him and leaning into his side.
“Do I get to know what’s going on now?”
“We’re gonna watch the sunset and spend one more night together, just the two of us,” he says, but he’s picking at a string that’s come loose on his shirt.
You smile and lean your head down on his shoulder, “thank you for everything this summer. I had the best time.”
His head leans on yours and he agrees, starting to tell you all his favorite moments. You’re both laughing so hard by the end of it that you have tears in your eyes and the sun is all but set.
“I don’t want to go back. I want to keep spending time with you and having fun here,” you admit, looking over at him.
He’s quiet as he replies, “I’d do anything to get a couple more weeks with you. I can’t get enough of you for some reason.”
You blush, looking out at the water and noticing that some of the stars are starting to show. You look back at Ryder to tell him but he leans in, kissing you gently. You freeze for a split second before kissing him back. You pull back, biting your lip to keep from smiling too big, and Ryder laughs a little.
“I’m glad that didn’t go wrong. I was worried you would push me off,” he admits, his cheeks darkening a little.
“Are you kidding me? I’ve been waiting all summer for that,” you say, playing with the strings on your hoodie.
Ryder leans in and kisses you again quickly, “it doesn’t have to be over just because summer is. We can keep this going.”
You look at him, ideas about visiting Wisconsin and late night phone calls flooding your brain immediately. Whatever it would take sounds worth it to you.
“Not just a summer fling?” You hum, pretending to think about it. Ryder reaches over and tickles your sides, making you laugh and break your fake thought train, “okay, deal. Let’s see where things go.”
“Best summer ever,” Ryder mumbles, leaning in one more time. You don’t think you’ll ever get sick of him doing that either.

You’re the one that I want-R.Donovan
Requested: yes|no
Ntdp masterlist
A/N: inspired to the one and only song from grease “you’re the one that I want” also idk if I should add Ryder to ntdp masterlist? I might!
Song:
You’re the one that I want
Let me know your thoughts if you have any!
You knew by the end of the day you were just Ryder’s best friend. Nothing more. But to you? You wanted more. You had to push your feelings deep down for him because you always wanted his happiness and that’s what you placed first. He did the same with you placing yours before him, but little did he know your happiness was him in general. Nothing else.
“I think you should talk to that guy,” Ryder nodded his head in the guys direction across the restaurant, he had been staring at you since you both walked into the restaurant, but you were not interested in him.
“Uh he’s not my type.” You looked back at him and he looked away and then you looked back at Ryder seeing a smile form on his lips making your stomach do somersaults, “not your type? Attractive isn’t your type?”
“Seems like you want him to be your boyfriend.” You smiled and the waiter came back with your bill, just as you were about to put your money down Ryder put his credit card out with a devilish smile, “beat you to it again.”
“It’s no fair, ryds, you’ve paid for every meal.” You frowned waiting for the waiter to come back and Ryder shrugged leaning back in his chair, “that sucks, huh?”
You both had gone out to an extremely late dinner after his hockey game and you had ran into some of the players on the opposing team, and you assumed the boy who had been staring at you all night had played against Ryder, and he was just trying to get him off his back about the game that Duluth east had beat in overtime thanks to Ryder’s goal. It also might not have been in your favor that you were wearing Ryder’s jersey like you always did.
Once the waiter came back with Ryder’s credit card you both got up and started heading out to his car when the group of boys the guy was at stopped you both, “that your boyfriends jersey?”
“No,” you replied feeling uncomfortable wrapping your arms around yourself not liking some of the looks you were getting from the few boys at the table. Ryder stood right behind you tracing his name on the back of the jersey.
“Good because maybe next game you could be wearing mine.” He smiled handing you a napkin with his phone number on it and he winked at you while you both walked out of the restaurant now.
“Hey you got a guys number! Isn’t that great?” He nudged you on the way to his car opening the passenger door for you and you rolled your eyes, “I told you I don’t like him.”
“You never like anybody!” Ryder complained closing the door getting into the drivers side now starting the car looking over at you and you shrugged, “I’m not interested in dating right now, ryds.”
“Come on, you have to like someone?” He asked and you shook your head, “I like nobody,” you said, you had so badly wanted to just tell him it was him, but you couldn’t. He was your best friend and you didn’t want to ruin what you had with him telling him that.
You grabbed the aux cord playing music on the way to his teammates house kicking your feet across his lap while he drove and he rested one hand on them while you scrolled carelessly through your phone liking the pictures from the game tonight that some of the girlfriends posted and some that friends of the guys posted. You usually shied away from posting pictures of you in Ryder’s jersey because with him being captain girls were a bit obsessed with him, but every now and then Ryder or you in his jersey made an appearance on your Instagram, but it usually made its way onto others.
When you guys pulled in Ryder got out of the car first opening your door like he always did, and you thanked him following him inside, “hey look who’s here! Late!” His teammate laughed and you both parted ways, you went into the family room with the girls and Ryder went into the kitchen with the boys.
“Hey, y/n.” They smiled once you sat down on the floor with another one of the girls, “hi,” you smiled, a lot of them knew about your crush on Ryder and they always tried to say he was into you as well, but to you it seemed like they were just saying it to be nice or to not make you feel bad.
“How was dinner with Ryder?”
“It was good, got a guys number.” You said, you were still debating on texting him because you so badly wanted to see if things with Ryder would somehow work out, but you wanted to see if maybe this guy could change your mind.
“Really? Are you going to text him?”
You shrugged and the boys all came in and Ryder sat down next to you while the others filled in next to their girlfriends, “probably not.” You replied and she smiled, “understandable he probably wasn’t as cute as compared to you know,”
“For sure,” one of the others who also knew said and a few others agreed, “hate to admit it.”
“Admit what? What’s going on?” One of the boys asked and you all just pushed it aside, but they had kept pressing, “it’s none of your business.” You kept telling them all and they just kept pressing.
“Alright alright, I got to ask,” one of the girls said settling things down now pointing between you and Ryder, “what is this? Every now and then I get like hopefully that you two will finally see that you’re perfect for each other, but every time that happens Ryder has a new girl with him or y/n is picking up another guy, so what is it with you two?”
He laughed and you just faked a laugh too, of course deep down you wished you both were dating but that wouldn’t happen when he saw you as a friend or like another sister, “we are just best friends, nothing else.”
“Yeah,” you commented locking eyes with one of the girls who knew who got up out of her seat pressing a kiss to your head before walking out into the kitchen, countless of times you called her to talk about your feelings for him, but what could you do? Mess things up with Ryder? You didn’t want that, you were now probably officially mayor of the friend zone and you hated it.
You got up now following into where she went seeing she was grabbing herself a bottle of mikes hard lemonade and she grabbed one for you out of the fridge, “you should just tell him,” she whispered and you shrugged, “he won’t feel the same way.”
“I’ll be right back,” Ryder got up off the floor about to go into the kitchen when he overheard you both, “how do you know? Come on, he holds the door open for you, he pays for all your meals, when you were in the hospital he wouldn’t leave your side, come on he even lets you wear his sweats when you’re on your period. You can’t tell me he doesn’t like you.”
“Well I’m sure he doesn’t and that’s final. Ryder I’m sure just wants to be friends—“
“But I don’t.” He didn’t even think about it for a second about those words that came out of his mouth. Listening to you both talk certainly made sense to him why he did all the little things just for you, and no other girl. Hearing you say you were sure he just wanted to be friends was a wake up call for him to realize for the many years he’s known you for he’s always wanted you. You were the one that he wanted.
“What?” You asked turning around to see Ryder standing in the kitchen, and it was now just you two in the kitchen, “I don’t want to be just friends.” nothing felt real in this moment for you, hearing him say that was weird, it felt you were dreaming and the alarm clock was about to come on.
“I like you, you’re the one that I want. I really don’t want anybody else.”
“You want me?” You asked feeling his arms wrap around you pulling you close him, a smile on both of your faces that certainly couldn’t be wiped away.
“Are you looking for a boyfriend who wears the number twenty-two and the captain?”
“I think so, but I don’t know he hasn’t asked me.” You played along and he pressed his forehead against yours, “you want to date me?”
“Yeah I do.”
“Good, because that jersey is your boyfriends.”

Winter Humor: Minnesota vs. Tampa Bay (& Elsewhere)
Mind Over Matter Weather
While rain is forecast for Super Bowl 55 in Tampa Bay this Sunday, the high temp is still expected to be close to 70 degrees.
In the Twin Cities?
Not so much (literally).
In fact, the warmest it’s expected to reach locally the next ten days is 5 degrees, with a low of -17 degrees (never mind the windchill).
With that stark contrast it mind, it seemed timely to compare the locals’ rather unique attitude towards arctic temps with those who live in warmer climes:
60 above zero: Floridians turn on the heat. People in Minnesota plant gardens.
50 above zero: Californians shiver uncontrollably. People in Duluth sunbathe.
20 above zero: Floridians use coats, thermal underwear, gloves, wool hats. People in Minnesota throw on a flannel shirt.
15 above zero: New York landlords finally turn up the heat. People in Minnesota have the last cookout before it gets cold. Twin Cities window washers show up five minutes early, add antifreeze to cleaning solution (true ” the home in question was mine).
Zero: People in Miami all die. Minnesotans close the windows.
25 below zero: Hollywood disintegrates. The Girl Scouts in Minnesota are selling cookies door to door. Gabriel Kaplan (my 18 year-old son) puts on long pants.
460 below zero: ALL atomic motion stops (absolute zero on the Kelvin scale.) People in Minnesota start saying . . . “Cold ’nuff fer ya??”
500 below zero: Hell freezes over. Minnesota public schools will open 2 hours late.
Impervious People — and Animals
It’s not just people who are stoic about the weather here — so are the animals.
In that vein, there was a story locally, years ago, about someone who was upset because their next-door neighbor left their dog (a husky) outside in the winter without any shelter.
Eventually, the local municipality must have ordered the dog owner to put up a shelter in their backyard, which they did.
The husky slept on top of it.
P.S.: For any smug East Coasters reading this blog: don’t be. The deep freeze is headed your way this weekend.

High Temp in Twin Cities Today: 18° (Never Mind the Wind Chill)
At least to me, there are two things that are depressing about a high temp of 18° locally today, in what the calendar says is still officially mid-Fall: 1) the high temperature today was 18 degrees!!; and 2) that merely ties, not breaks, the Twin Cities record for November 11.
Of course, famously stoic Minnesotans are supposed to take such tribulations in stride.
Here’s a (slightly) tongue in cheek comparison of the natives’ mindset vs. less hardy types elsewhere:
60 above zero: Floridians turn on the heat. People in Minnesota plant gardens.
50 above zero: Californians shiver uncontrollably. People in Duluth sunbathe.
20 above zero: Floridians use coats, thermal underwear, gloves, wool hats. People in Minnesota throw on a flannel shirt.
15 above zero: New York landlords finally turn up the heat. People in Minnesota have the last cookout before it gets cold. **Twin Cities window washers show up five minutes early, add antifreeze to cleaning solution (true — the home in question was mine).
Zero: People in Miami all die. Minnesotans close the windows.
25 below zero: Hollywood disintegrates. The Girl Scouts in Minnesota are selling cookies door to door. **Gabriel Kaplan (my 15 year-old son) puts on long pants.
460 below zero: ALL atomic motion stops (absolute zero on the Kelvin scale.) People in Minnesota start saying . . . ”Cold ’nuff fer ya?”

Hiding Poem
A paper cut
An open vein
I flow through your bloodstream
I stop at your heart
I squeeze behind your beating pattern
To hide
The throbbing pattern that keeps you alive
Saddens me
I hear the pain in each pound of your heart
The way you release it
The way you let it in
I just hide there
The transparent, silky skin is like a move screen
I see your memories that touched your heart
I see what you really love
I see who you really love
Over time I start to notice
How weak your heart becomes
From deflecting mean words of others
And I just hide

Avocado Dye Is, Naturally, Millennial Pink
To make natural dye from avocados, all you need are the pits. Those golden-brown seeds, so slippery when first removed, contain a milky, tannin-rich liquid that blooms into a startling red ink when simmered in water.
First, wash the pits and dry them. Then, boil them in a pot filled with enough water to cover the fabric (about five pits per half-pound of fabric). As the seeds dance around the liquid, slowly knocking into each other, their shells will peel off and crack open, turning the water a bright ruby red. Let it steep overnight.
The next day, add damp fabric until the color looks right. (Any pre-washed fabrics should be soaked in warm water the previous night so the color takes.) Don’t strive for perfection: Each attempt will be different, imperfect, otherworldly and pink.
This deceptively simple process is an art form in the hands of María Elena Pombo. A clothing designer from Venezuela, Ms. Pombo, 30, is part of a group of millennial makers who work with plant-based dyes, which tend to be more sustainable and make use of vegetable scraps that might otherwise be abandoned. From her studio, on an industrial stretch of Ingraham Street in Brooklyn’s East Williamsburg neighborhood, Ms. Pombo creates exquisite made-to-order clothing dyed with all kinds of organic refuse, including walnut shells, annatto seeds and onion skins. But avocado pits are her main medium.
Her company, Fragmentario, is equal parts fashion experiment and educational initiative. In addition to selling clothing, Ms. Pombo offers workshops on how to extract beguiling colors from botanical materials.
The results are uneven by nature. Variations in water minerality and pH, not to mention the inevitable addition of pollutants, affect the shades of plant-based dyes. Hard water, which is full of minerals like calcium and magnesium, can make colors more vibrant, while softer water produces more muted tones. Plant-based fibers like cotton or linen will typically mellow the dye, while animal-derived fibers like wool or silk yield richer hues.
But Ms. Pombo approaches her pigments with a methodical sensibility that reflects her earlier training in engineering. There are beakers, burners and tongs, and jars filled with water sourced from all over the world in her studio, along with meticulous spreadsheets that trace dye experiments and tests. “I’m doing this hand process but it’s very controlled,” she said.
Avocados, Before Millennials
We can thank giant prehistoric sloths for the dispersal of avocados. The Lestodons, as the sloths are known, could grow to be 15 feet long, and they spent their days roaming around South America during the Cenozoic era, swallowing avocados whole and spreading fruit trees in their wake. Though humans began cultivating the fruit as early as 5,000 years ago, one of the earliest published descriptions of the avocado is from 1519: The “edible fruit,” wrote the geographer and conquistador Martin Fernandez de Enciso in a document called Suma de geographia, is “like butter” and “of marvelous flavor, so good and pleasing to the palate that it is a marvelous thing.”
The seeds understandably play second fiddle to this “marvelous” fruit — now so in-demand that the United States imported nearly 2 billion pounds of Hass avocados from Mexico in 2018 alone. But there is evidence the humble pit has long been used for dye or ink. In a paper published in 1964, a Spanish art historian, Santiago Sebastian, wrote that many surviving documents from the Spanish conquest of Central and South America were reportedly written using ink derived from the seeds. And its application to textiles goes back generations, though it is often not preserved in the written record.
“Avocado pink is a bit of a mystery,” said Jennifer Gómez Menjívar, an associate professor of Spanish and Latin American studies at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. “What we know about it has been preserved through oral histories.” For example, the Kuna people who have lived in northeastern Panama and the neighboring San Blas Islands since pre-Hispanic times, mention the use of avocado to dye fabrics in their creation story. But traces of alpaca and llama wool dyed with avocado seeds have been unearthed in archaeological sites as well, notably in the Andean highlands where the Aymara and Quechua people have resided.
Unlike dyes made of onion skins or flowers — where the end product often closely resembles the color of the material — the dye of avocado seeds is “very magical,” Ms. Pombo said. “I would never have imagined that it was going to be pink.”
There are many types of avocados, and thus, many possible shades of avocado pink; the species, part of the laurel family, is generally divided into three botanical races — Mexican, Guatemalan and West Indian — but cross-pollination permits the development of unlimited varieties.
The variety that grew in Ms. Pombo’s yard in her family home in Caracas, called Fuerte, is green-skinned, pear-shaped and double the size of the Hass variety commonly found in the U.S. The seed announces itself when ripe, rattling in the groove inside the fruit like a maraca. Those avocados, Ms. Pombo said, “remind me of home.”
But for her first avocado-dyed clothing collection she used Hass avocado seeds, sourcing them from four different delis in Bushwick. Because storage space at the delis was limited, this meant shuttling to each location twice a week, to pick up around 20 pits each time. It also meant hours spent catching up with the owners and employees when Ms. Pombo dropped in for a pickup.
The outcome was a line of uniform garments, available in linen, silk or a sheer silk-organza-and-cotton blend, that were hand-dyed — down to the button — in a dusty pink shade that calls to mind a bone-dry rose. The garments, which were sold through Instagram, didn’t come cheap: Prices ranged from $300 for a linen shirt to $1,580 for a silk shantung jacket. But Ms. Pombo said that the carefully fabricated pieces are meant to be heirloom items — unique and inheritable. “The idea is to slow down and have a more thoughtful relationship with what we’re consuming,” she said.
One Man’s Trash
Last summer at one of Ms. Pombo’s onion-dyeing workshop, held at McLeod’s Community Garden in Brownsville, Brooklyn, (and offered free-of-charge through a grant from the New York Restoration Project) nearly 50 participants gathered around bins full of waterlogged onion skins, waiting for their turn to dunk scarves and bandannas. Bits of detritus mingled with the fabric as it soaked, imbuing the charmeuse and chiffon with a rusty red hue.
While participants waited patiently for the alchemy to take effect, Ms. Pombo spoke about the beauty that could be wrung from food waste.
“We ask a lot of questions about where our food comes from, but we do not think the same about textiles,” Ms. Pombo said. “By using food waste, you give them a second life, creating beauty of something that would be considered garbage.” (Ms. Pombo now sources her seeds from Arepera Guacuco, a Venezuelan restaurant in Brooklyn. Every week the restaurant fills up a gallon-size Mason jar with about a 100 pits for her use; she grinds most of them with a Vitamix for easier storage.)
Her maternal grandmother, Ligia de Reyes, was sitting in a white plastic patio chair nearby, beaming with pride. Ms. Reyes, who is 80, was visiting Brooklyn from Cabimas, Venezuela, for the first time. Her family left Venezuela slowly, but is now mostly displaced from the country, which is mired in severe economic collapse and devastation.
“I didn’t know how to have this kind of fragmented family structure,” Ms. Pombo said. Her parents are in Canada and her brother lives in London. But both her grandmothers remain in Venezuela. “Nostalgia is such a part of my identity now because it’s not like I can just go back home,” she said. “What remains is a shell of what it was once.”
In 2018, Ms. Pombo became eligible to apply for a green card, which meant that she couldn’t leave the U.S. at all. It was a hard change; the avocado seed workshops had taken her to Italy, Spain and Germany, where she taught workshops; each city produced a unique shade of “avocado pink” from the different water properties and dye-making conditions. (The water in Barcelona and Madrid resulted in more reddish colors, but it was Paris’ hard water that yielded the most extreme pink.)
Realizing she wouldn’t be able to travel for a while, Ms. Pombo began asking friends to send her water from their journeys. Strangers and fans on social media followed suit. Bottles began arriving from Chicago, New Delhi and interesting sources, like the Dead Sea. “Getting those waters from people, that was really beautiful,” Ms. Pombo recalled, visibly moved. Being stuck in New York helped her find a new way to connect with the world. A second clothing line started to take shape. “Everyone has been a part of the collection,” she said. “It inspired a practice for what the color could be like, a sense of playfulness.”
The new pieces, all silk and made-to-order, range from $300 for a scarf to $2,200 for a hand-pleated silk organza dress. The silhouettes are similar to her last collection, but this time the diaphanous textiles are ruched and steamed before dyeing, and the shades vacillate between tones of blush, rust and rose. The results look wild, unwieldy and unpredictable, reflecting the variability of different water samples from around the world.
One of her best friends from Venezuela grounded in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, because her passport had expired and Venezuela has not issued her a new one, was for a long time unable to visit New York. She mailed Ms. Pombo the water she collected from Mexico anyway. “It’s nice,” Ms. Pombo said. “Because we did this together, but away.”

Where 20-Somethings Actually Buy Homes: The 10 Hottest Cities for Young Millennials
iStock; realtor.com
As much as pigeonholing millennials has become widely accepted sport (Selfie sticks! Avocado toast! Gross entitlement!), you can’t really squeeze the ginormous mass of Americans born between 1981 and 1996 into one eco-friendly, sustainably produced basket. Maybe two baskets. There are the older ones in their 30s who graduated straight into the hellscape of the Great Recession, and then the youngsters in their 20s who caught a break and got out of school when the economy was booming again.
It’s no surprise then, that when it comes to home buying, the older half tends to be jaded and a bit battle-scarred, while the younger group is more optimistic.
But here’s the thing: While millennials have been the biggest chunk of U.S. home buyers already for a few years, we’re about to see the younger half hit the housing market en masse. The biggest years for millennial births were between 1989 and 1993, and over the next five years those folks will all be hitting their 30s—the core first-time home-buying years. This group will help determine where the next “hot” markets are and what the most desirable homes of the future will be. Their tastes and preferences will shape the housing market for years to come.
So the realtor.com® data team set out to find the metropolitan areas* with the most home buyers still in their 20s—not just younger millennials, but also the first vestiges of the next demo group, the ominously titled Generation Z.
Get ready for some changes, folks.
“Younger Americans don’t have the baggage of the recession and are better positioned to become home buyers—and reverse some of that narrative that millennials aren’t buyers,” says Jason Dorsey, president of the Austin, TX–based research group Center for Generational Kinetics.
So where are they going? “Cost is still the driving factor” of where they want to settle down, says Dorsey. “They need to be in a place where they think there are enough job opportunities and job security for them to make the commitment to buy a home.”
But they don’t want to go to the middle of nowhere just because it’s cheap. And they aren’t necessarily settling down to accommodate growing families yet, as the median age for a first-time parent was 26 in 2016—up from 23 in 1994, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. They wants jobs and fun. Stability and nightlife. Affordability and culture. And they don’t mind taking on a fixer-upper or a less traditional neighborhood to make it happen,
To figure out where 20- to 29-year-olds are buying the most homes, we calculated where they took out the highest percentage of mortgages in 2018** in the 200 largest metropolitan areas. The ranking was limited to one metro per state to ensure geographic diversity.
So what are the top hot spots for buyers in their 20s?
Best cities for 20-somethings
Claire Widman
1. Evansville, IN
Median list price: $155,000 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29**: 33.2%
Evansville, IN
DenisTangneyJr/iStock
This Midwestern river town is striving to become a place where young folks want to live and hang out on the weekends. The city purchased a private lot downtown with plans to turn it into a park, music venue, and maybe even an ice rink. Events like the Evansville Food Truck Festival, in its third year, and the buzzy Evansville Donut Festival are stemming the flow of 20-somethings to Louisville, two hours east, and Indianapolis, about three hours northeast.
Baked treats aside, the biggest draw here is affordability. Median-priced homes cost about $100,000 less than in those bigger metros.
“These younger buyers are realizing they can get homes they actually own and spend less on a mortgage than they would on rent,” says local real estate agent Trae Dauby of Keller Williams Capital Realty. “Most are locals who were born and raised in the area.”
The city doesn’t have a lot of new condo developments, so many buyers in their 20s are grabbing 100-year-old, single-family homes that need work. The hottest spot for these buyers is just west of downtown along the Ohio River in the 47712 ZIP code. They can score four-bedroom beauties for about $130,000 in neighborhoods such as Poplar Grove and Bunny Grove within the ZIP. About half of those taking out mortgages in this area were under 30.
2. Duluth, MN
Median list price: $178,600 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29: 32.5%
Park Point, Duluth, MN
LIKE HE/iStock
Located in northern Minnesota and right on the banks of Lake Superior, Duluth attracts outdoorsy folks looking for a low-key lifestyle with lots of fresh air, kayaking, and cross-country skiing.
“We attract a certain younger demographic: the micro-beer-drinking bike rider,” says Jonathan Thornton, managing broker of Coldwell Banker East-West Realty in Duluth. (Nice targeting!)
These days these sudsy cyclists have plenty of options, including Ursa Minor Brewing, opened last fall by a former high school chemistry teacher and his brother and serving signature ales such as Hazy Bastard and Porcupine Pilsner. They’re popular with the college set (21-plus, of course) since the city is home to the University of Minnesota Duluth and its roughly 10,000 students.
Home prices here are much cheaper than in Minneapolis, a two-hour hour drive away. Twenty-somethings are gravitating toward single-family fixer-uppers priced under $100,000 in Lincoln Park, a historic neighborhood right on the lake’s shoreline and where most of the breweries are opening.
3. Clarksville, TN
Median list price: $226,800 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29: 31.8%
Downtown Clarksville, TN
DenisTangneyJr/iStock
Clarksville is known for Fort Campbell, an Army base that sits just outside of town. For decades young military families have been the top home buyers in town—but recently they’re competing with an influx of 20-somethings priced out of Nashville.
Prices have soared in the Music City to $350,000. So Clarksville, about 45 minutes away, has become an appealing alternative.
“People can find more affordable housing and a lot more house here,” says local real estate agent Valerie Hunter-Kelly of Keller Williams. “Those younger buyers don’t want to deal with the stress of a competitive market, so they come to Clarksville instead.”
Younger buyers are usually looking for three-bed, two-bath, newly constructed houses or remodeled bungalows in the $150,000 to $220,000 range, Hunter-Kelly says. On the weekends they go out in Nashville, or stay in town and maybe tour Old Glory Distilling, a whiskey distillery. (G’head, try the Smooth Shine Moonshine. Straight up, please.)
4. Lafayette, LA
Median list price: $210,100 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29: 31.7%
Lafayette, LA
DenisTangneyJr/iStock
Young folks looking for a good time have no need to drive the two hours from Lafayette to New Orleans. Known for its Southern charm and cajun eats, this Louisiana city hosts its own Mardi Gras celebration every March complete with elaborate costumes and masked balls.
But it’s all of the good-paying oil jobs in this Gulf Coast community that are the real draw for 20-something residents.
Shocking as it may seem to denizens of East or West Coast cities, it’s common for Lafayette locals to be on their second home before they even hit 30. That’s because two-bedroom, starter homes sell for less than $140,000.
5. Des Moines, IA
Median list price: $288,500 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29: 31.1%
Des Moines, IA
benkrut/iStock
When it comes to Midwest real estate, Des Moines, which has been grappling with flooding in recent days, is actually on the more expensive side. Places such as Detroit, Indianapolis, and St. Louis all have lower prices. So why are folks under 30 buying in the state capital of Iowa? They’re drawn to good-paying jobs at companies such as Wells Fargo, Nationwide, and Principal Financial and the quaint music and arts scenes.
“We’re getting young workers from Chicago and the East Coast and the West Coast who want the lifestyle of a smaller town,” says Paul Walter, a real estate agent with Re/Max Real Estate Group in Des Moines. The region’s population jumped 13% from 2010 to 2017, with lots of those newcomers being on the younger side.
Many of these buyers are trying to snag condos in the heart of downtown. But if price is an issue, they’re looking at Beaverdale, a quiet suburban neighborhood with lots of renovated homes priced around $200,000.
“A lot of those folks are at the point where they’re tired of renting or living at home with Mom and Dad. They’re eager to get out on their own,” Walter says.
6. Provo, UT
Median list price: $380,000 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29: 30.4%
Shopping district in Provo, UT
Witold Skrypczak/Getty Images
When 20-somethings buy a home, it’s usually because they’re getting a bargain. That isn’t the case in Provo, the most expensive market on our ranking. Instead Provo offers a booming job market with employers such as Ancestry.com and Brigham Young University, as well as a startup scene that punches above its belt.
Simply put: Folks have more money to spend on homes here. Plus, it’s a little cheaper than Salt Lake City, about 45 minutes north.
Buyers are getting a helping hand from the city, too. Provo offers down payment assistance up to $10,000 for first-timers. Just last month realtor.com named Provo one of the best places in America for folks looking to snag a starter home.
The biggest group of home buyers in their 20s can be found in the 84058 ZIP code, in Orem, in the northern section of the metro. Home to Utah Valley University, the ZIP has more than 40% of buyers under 30.
7. Youngstown, OH
Median list price: $119,300 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29: 30.2%
Youngstown, OH
DenisTangneyJr/iStock
When the American steel industry started going belly up in the ’70s, Youngstown went down with it. The area hasn’t fully recovered to this day.
Despite revitalization efforts and a drop in crime, the city is still battling persistent poverty with the median household income just under $26,300, according to Census data. In an attempt to stem the brain drain, the city invested in the Youngstown Business Incubator, providing funding and office space to tech and 3D printing companies.
Most of all, the low home prices, even by Rust Belt standards, are an incentive to stick around. Folks can snag three-bedroom homes with front porches for under $60,000.
While many of the most expensive housing markets are seeing home prices fall, median home prices are so low in Youngstown that they had room to jump 12.1% over the past year. That’s by far the largest increase among the places we ranked.
8. Wichita, KS
Median list price: $197,500 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29: 29.4%
Downtown Wichita, KS
DenisTangneyJr/iStock
Wichita State University grads don’t need to head to the bigger cities to start their careers. The area is home to large employers such as Koch Industries and Cessna. A strong local economy combined with reasonable home prices makes it easier to save up for a first down payment.
There are also plenty of things for 20-somethings to do in the Great Plains college town. Enjoy imbibing? There’s Aero Plains Brewing, where the bar is made out of an old airplane wing, festivals like Autumn & Art, where folks can drink wine while walking through the open-air gallery, and the Midwest Beerfest, where attendees taste craft beers from more than 400 breweries.
Home buyers get a lot for their money as we ranked the city No. 5 for having the most homes over 3,000 square feet.
9. Utica, NY
Median list price: $130,000 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29: 29.2%
Utica, NY
DenisTangneyJr/iStock
Utica was once known as the Sin City of the East thanks to the strong presence of the mob. But thankfully, the former textile manufacturing town is now better known for low prices than organized crime.
Homes in this upstate New York metro are way cheaper than those in Albany, about 90 minutes east, which carry median list prices of $300,000. And because Utica is so cheap, first-time buyers tend to be young.
Most 20-something homeowners are purchasing three-bed, one-bath homes for $100,000 or less—about a third of the national median home price, says local real estate broker David Paciello of One Realty Partners
“That age group is our bread and butter,” says Paciello.
10. Grand Rapids, MI
Median list price: $286,500 Percentage of mortgages issued to buyers aged 20 to 29: 29.1%
Meijer Gardens and Greenhouse in Grand Rapids, MI
Terryfic3D/iStock
This old former industrial town has transformed into something of a Midwest hipster haven. By design.
“The city made a plan a few years ago to really market itself toward young people. They made improvements to downtown and brought in employment opportunities,” says Trisha Cornelius, a real estate agent with Keller Williams in Grand Rapids. “They built those loft condos downtown … specifically marketed toward younger buyers.”
Those who can’t afford those lofts, which can easily top $350,000, can scoop up cheaper fixer-uppers in up-and-coming neighborhoods like Eastown. The walkable community is filled with cafes and local restaurants populated by the younger set.
And these young buyers are helping to keep the housing market strong here. Indeed, realtor.com projected earlier this year that Grand Rapids would be the second-hottest real estate market in 2019.
* A metropolitan statistical area is a designation that includes the urban core of a city and the surrounding smaller towns and cities.
** This figure is calculated using mortgage data from Optimal Blue, a real estate data firm that specializes in lending records. We excluded mortgages that were refinances or purchases for second homes or investment properties.

The BEST gluten-free places in Montreal
Your new boyfriend/girlfriend is gluten intolerant and all your classic restaurants are no longer options for romantic dates? Don’t panic! If you don’t mind asking questions and scrutinize menus, you’ll find many cool spots to eat with your lover in Montreal. With my 25 years of experience in the magical world of gluten-free, I present you some of my favorites in the city! Pssst. You can even bring your friends who think gluten-free means no-bread, no-taste, no-dessert... they won’t even notice!
AREPERA The Arepera restaurant is known for their arepas: a Venezuelan bun made of grilled corn and filled with pulled meat or blacks beans or fish. Then they can add avocados, feta cheese, tomatoes, plantain bananas and many other delicious things. Trust me, it’s worth a try! It’s a great option for a quick dinner or an afternoon snack. The place just moved from a tiny space on Duluth to a lovely new spot on Prince-Arthur. As it’s now on a pedestrian street, it’s nice if you want to take your arepa as take-out and eat it while wandering on Saint-Laurent boulevard! (Photo Facebook Arepera du Plateau)
RUMI Rumi is located between Outremont and the Mile-End, but hidden from Parc street’s hubbub. Their tasty plates ares inspired by the typical cookings from Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. Their mezes (dishes to share) will make everyone happy. On the menu: hummus, pistachio labneh, feta mousse, marinated peppers, lamb sausages and much more. As these plates are often eaten with naan bread, note that they can be replaced with corn tortillas - gluten free! The restaurant also serves brunch from 11am to 3pm. The dates omelette or breakfast-tajine will make you feel like starting the day abroad. Sipping a mint tea and relaxing on their large terrace, that’s a great way to spend your morning! MAÏS This one quickly became one of my favorites; it’s one of the best places for tacos in Montreal. Make no mistake: the restaurant itself and its patio may be tiny but demand is high! Their tacos are always gluten-free and sometimes vegetarian. Their great mixes of toppings are a big win and, if you ask me, are particularly yummy with a Margarita on the side! LE MARQUIS Thanks to this amazing bakery I was able to make peace with my gluten-free condition. These flaky pastry magicians offer croissants and chocolate croissants that taste like “the real ones.” (If you have never eaten a croissant in your life, you’re welcome!) They also have a large choice of breads and bagels, quiches, chicken pies, pizzas and sandwichs baguettes! I bet you’ll leave the place with a bag full of delicious finds! BYBLOS LE PETIT CAFÉ Throughout the seasons, this place is beautiful and bright due to its large windows. During summer, they open these windows to let a soft breeze tickle our skin. Blyblos is known for its typical Middle-Eastern cuisine. Even if you’re not used to this type of food, you’ll find something to really enjoy! Personally, I always take the feta omelette and the cucumber and raisins yogurt on the side. If I’m really hungry, I add their saffron rice and olives. Always lovely! (Photo Tastet)
MARCHÉ JEAN-TALON A Montreal iconic location! You can find little gluten-free treasures at marché Jean-Talon. As soon as you enter, you’ll find a little pulled-pork tacos stand. 100% gluten-free and 100% delicious, at cheap price! For a bigger meal, try Rey del Taco where you can practice your Spanish by ordering enchiladas or quesadillas. Make sure to ask for corn tortillas as some of their plates are made with wheat tortillas - for this part, you can go back to speaking in English.😉 Finally, you can go to the Crêperie du Marché to find sweet or salty buckwheat pancakes. Tip: ask them to clean the hotplate a bit if a “regular” pancake was cooked on it before. Then, the high temperature will take care of the rest. You’re now ready to eat with peace of mind! COOKIE STÉFANIE This Old-Montreal bakery is a must. Even folks who are not gluten intolerant go there to grab their lunch or little treats. Many cupcakes and cakes can be bought for an upcoming birthday. To be honest, all their desserts taste like heaven but that’s not all! You can also find fresh bread, salads, eggs or tuna or avocado toasts. Perfect lunch on-the-go! (Photo Facebook Cookie Stéfanie)
LE POINT SANS G The adventure started as a foodtruck for gluten intolerants but has now opened a “real” restaurant where they offer a huge selection of products that change almost every week. For brunch, you must make a reservation because places are limited in this tiny restaurant. The Point sans G makes all gluten intolerants’ dreams come true (or almost): fried chicken on waffles, red velvet pancakes or breakfast poutines! (The place is actually closed because of an incident but will re-open soon.) (Photo Facebook Le point sans g)
MANDY’S This is a classic for people working downtown Montreal who “forget” their lunches. Mandy’s is perfect if you’re looking for something healthy and nutritious. You can choose among their pre-built salads or create a custom version. Their menu is easy to read with little gluten-free symbols next to some of the choices. Good news: almost all of their dressings are gluten-free! Also, their list of ingredients is vast and always fresh. (Photo Facebook Mandy’s)
LES FILLETTES This neighborhood bistro has everything: classy enough for a dinner with your parents, a pleasant and helpful staff plus a perfect selection of imported wines; definitely one of my all-time favorites. Most importantly: gluten is never a problem. They’re happy to rearrange their plates for you. Their first and main courses are truly delectable. They also have a big terrace surrounded by romantic little lightbulbs. What else do we need? (Photo Facebook Les fillettes)
LE MOUSSO THIS place. It’s a unique experience. Last April, they received the “Restaurant of the Year” prize, before the renowned Toqué and Europea. I admit it, it’s expensive. But you’ll discover flavors you didn’t even knew existed. Of course, gluten intolerance has no secret for the qualified team. You will be able to enjoy the amazing food without any worries. Simply warn the waiter when you arrive.
Note: they just opened a “bistro” where you can share smaller dishes and a glass of wine for cheaper price. No matter what, you should definitely try this place at least once in your life!
With all these suggestions, I think you should now be inspired for your next date! Don’t forget: always feel free to ask questions to the waiters; most of them will be happy to help. Bon appétit! By Marie-Noëlle Goulet
