DUP’s Ang Nawalang Kapatid Stages Benefit Shows on July 4-6, 11-13
Tumblr media
Coming off a hugely successful and critically acclaimed extended run, Dulaang UP’s Ang Nawalang Kapatid stages benefit shows on July 4-6, 11-13 (Friday to Sunday only) in celebration of UP Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts’ 55th Anniversary. Proceeds are for the improvement of UP Diliman’s famed theaters- Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater and Teatro Hermogenes Ylagan- bastions of DUP plays. If you missed or would like to relive the Filipino retelling of one of the world’s oldest and longest epic poems, The Mahabharata, this is your chance to watch the production praised by critics for its direction, text, music, and choreography. Critics laud the production as “an astonishing theatrical experience”, “an elegant and regal Filipino adaptation”, and Dexter Santos’s direction as “breathless and daring”. The story revolves around the battling royal families of the Pandavas and Kauravas, and the moral dilemma Karna, the lost brother, finds himself in. To whom does he owe his loyalty? To his family or to the state which made him a prince? The production emphasizes how the epic has shaped strong values regarding loyalty to family which is so much a part of South East Asian culture. Prof. Rina Angela Corpus emphasized how “Ang Nawalang Kapatid teaches us to learn the lasting truth that goodness and benevolence will inevitably return, like a lost son, back to the heart of human life, according to the drums of destiny” (GMA News Online, March 3, 2014). Originally staged as a children’s play, this fiercer, bigger, and more complex staging of acclaimed playwright Floy Quintos’ adaptation is under the direction and choreography of Santos, with original music by Ceejay Javier. Ang Nawalang Kapatid is staged at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor Palma Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman. Seats are limited.

About The Duchess of Malfi/Ang Dukesa ng Malfi
The play begins as a love story, with a Duchess who marries beneath her class, and ends as a nightmarish tragedy as her two brothers exact their revenge, destroying themselves in the process.
The play is set in the court of Malfi (Amalfi), Italy 1504 to 1510. The recently widowed Duchess falls in love with Antonio, a lowly steward, but her brothers, not wishing her to share their inheritance, forbid her from remarrying. She marries Antonio in secret and bears him three children.
The Duchess's lunatic and incestuously obsessed brother Ferdinand threatens and disowns her. In an attempt to escape, she and Antonio concoct a story that he has swindled her out of her fortune and has to flee into exile. She takes Bosola into her confidence, not knowing that he is Ferdinand's spy, and arranges that he will deliver her jewelry to Antonio at his hiding-place in Ancona. She will join them later, whilst pretending to make a pilgrimage to a town nearby. The Cardinal hears of the plan, instructs Bosola to banish the two lovers, and sends soldiers to capture them. Antonio escapes with their eldest son, but the Duchess, her maid, and her two younger children are returned to Malfi and, under instructions from Ferdinand, die at the hands of Bosola's executioners. This experience, combined with a long-standing sense of injustice and his own feeling of a lack of identity, turns Bosola against the Cardinal and his brother, deciding to take up the cause of "Revenge for the Duchess of Malfi" (V.2).
The Cardinal confesses to his mistress Julia his part in the killing of the Duchess and then murders her to silence her, using a poisoned Bible. Next, Bosola overhears the Cardinal plotting to kill him (though he accepts what he sees as punishment for his actions) and so visits the darkened chapel to kill the Cardinal at his prayers. Instead, he mistakenly kills Antonio, who has just returned to Malfi to attempt a reconciliation with the Cardinal. Bosola stabs the Cardinal, who dies. In the brawl that follows, Ferdinand and Bosola stab each other to death.
Antonio's elder son by the Duchess appears in the final scene and takes his place as the heir to the Malfi fortune, despite his father's explicit wish that he "fly the court of princes", a corrupt and increasingly deadly environment.
