Queen Elizabeth I
I was surprised by how small this portrait was because in all the photos I've seen of it...it's huge. I found out later that this is a miniature reproduction of the bigger, famous portrait. Kinda like a souvenir version. But just look at the detailing in that frame!

King George VI
When I look at this portrait (the link has a better quality image), all I see is Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Philip
What I love about this photo is the reflections of The Queen, William, and Harry in the glass. Physically, it gives you a sense of how they've set up the gallery. But metaphorically, it felt very "let's sit back and admire the view" of his legacy - longest-reigning consort to the longest-reigning monarch and grandfather of the future.
Too bad Harry is such a disappointment.
Tumblr media
Diana, 1981 - painted during her engagement to Charles.
What I find really interesting about this portrait is her hidden left hand, which means no sapphire engagement ring in the portrait. Almost kind of prophetic in a way of how her life played out.
Tumblr media
William and Harry
Interestingly, there were no portraits of Charles or Camilla on display at the time.
The portrait of Kate also was not on display. I did ask a docent where the portrait was and it hadn't been displayed in some time. It sounded like the gallery was sensitive to the criticism of the painting even though Kate didn't mind it. (Also, fun fact - if you go to the painting's webpage, which is linked above, and enable the cookies, you can see the reference photos that the painter took of Kate to do her portrait.)
Tumblr media
This is a statue of George Washington. I forget which museum he's outside of, but because the real George had never traveled outside of the United States or has ever stepped foot on foreign soil, the city of London actually bought dirt and grass from Virginia to plant under his statue in homage to his never having stepped foot on foreign soil. It was such a small gesture to have done but really meaningful.

Prince Edward has paid tribute to his wife, Sophie, as his ‘absolute rock’ as he discussed his family life with Alan Titchmarsh during an appearance on Love Your Weekend.
Tumblr media
The episode, which is set to air on March 10, the Duke of Edinburgh’s 60th birthday, will see the Prince sit down with the presenter and open up about his wife, the Duchess of Edinburgh, and their two children, Lady Louise, 20, and James, Earl of Wessex, 16.
Speaking of how much Sophie means to him, the Duke called his wife ‘critical, absolutely critical.’
He continued:
Tumblr media
‘She's been an absolutely brilliant rock and I'm incredibly lucky that I found Sophie and that she found me. Hopefully, we've been a really brilliant partnership.
We're very lucky, we’ve got two, of what we would think are particularly brilliant children, who are forging such different paths for themselves. I think that's also equally fascinating.’
Elsewhere he spoke about the significance of Mothering Sunday and described what the celebration means for his own family.
Prince Edward said, ‘Always and it's doubly so when you've got your own children - your own family is very important.’
‘Those days were [important growing up], and these days are really important to remember some very, very special people in our lives.
There should be several times in the year when we make a special sort of effort and Mothering Sunday was very much one of those where you made a special effort just to say ‘thank you.’
So it goes on and that's the lovely thing about it. That's the lovely thing about families and that's what it should be.’
During the discussion, Prince Edward also revealed the lasting memories his grandchildren have of the late Prince Philip, including teaching his daughter Lady Louise to drive a carriage.
It's a hobby, which was a passion of the late Duke’s, and has since been adopted as one of Lady Louise’s.
He said, ‘It was entirely off her own bat. I mean, you know, just one day, ‘Can I go out with you and go sit on the boxes?’
He was like, ‘Absolutely.’
'He never was going to say no! He took her out with the team and I think it was only the second time, he was driving along and he said, ‘Do you want to have a go?’ and she didn’t have time to even answer the question, he just handed the reins across.’
Tumblr media
Elsewhere in the discussion, Prince Edward spoke about how much it meant to him to be bestowed the title of Duke of Edinburgh. He said:
‘It was a huge privilege but also quite a lot of weight of expectation as well. I mean, there's an awful lot of legacy that came with that title and everything that my father had done. Especially when you're not inheriting it, this is a choice… that comes with all the expectations that people have.
It's just the weirdest and strangest feeling. You walk into a room and, particularly still today, there are name places on a card and I still look around going ‘Yes, but where am I sitting?’
Explaining how he would describe his father Prince Philip, The Duke called him an ‘extraordinary mind’, adding:
‘He was the Prince Albert of our age. He had an extraordinary mind. He loved design, he loved innovation, he was brilliant with all sorts of people.
Sometimes it didn't necessarily come across that way, but he was actually brilliant with people. He was always, always encouraging everybody. You sort of needed to get to know him.’
The interview comes after Sophie gave her own touching tribute to Edward during a royal engagement earlier in March.
The Duchess gave a rare, gushing tribute to her husband, calling him ‘the best of fathers and the most loving of husbands.’
Prince Edward looked deeply emotional throughout the speech, putting his hands over his face, as Sophie spoke about their love, saying, ‘I am so proud of the man he is.’

I have to admit, once in a while, Charles surprises me by doing something out of the blue and unexpected. In this instance, Charles bestowed upon his baby brother Edward the Order of the Thistle, which is an immense honor for Edward's 60th birthday. Now that was a nice thing for Charles to do for his kid brother's birthday. :)
Hi Nonny,
That was a very nice surprise. I am so pleased for The Duke of Edinburgh. King Charles gave him the Duke of Edinburgh title for his birthday last year, so The King seems to like giving out these things (titles, orders of chivalry) for birthdays.

Happy 60th birthday today to Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh. Born in 1964, he is the fourth and youngest child of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
His birth marked only the second time a child had been born to a reigning monarch since Queen Victoria gave birth to Princess Beatrice in 1857, with the other being his brother Andrew four years before.

Poll: Will Sophie get the Order of the Garter for her 60th birthday?
Sophie, The Duchess of Edinburgh, will have her 60th birthday on Monday, 20 January 2025.
Will King Charles give Sophie The Order of the Garter for her 60th birthday similar to how he gave her husband, Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh, the Order of the Thistle for his 60th birthday?
Or will she be given it when the birthday honors list comes out later this spring, just like Birgitte, The Duchess of Gloucester, last year?

Her day in the spotlight will be seriously overshadowed by P. William Q. Camilla and the D&D of Edinburgh by u/CheapLingonberry6785
Her ‘ day in the spotlight ‘ will be seriously overshadowed by P. William, Q. Camilla, and the D&D of Edinburgh Very ironic that on this day she chose ( paid to ) appear, other big things are happening ! Prince William is getting coverage for one of the Earthshot’s winners deal for sustainable packaging at sports grounds. It’s the Duke of Edinburgh, 60th birthday, many good articles there , a lovely speech from Sophie , Queen Camilla gave a speech as president of Women of the World ( I didn’t know that ) looks like a pretty big thing. Monday is the commonwealth day church service, that’ll get lots of coverage …., Oh and , because the army accidentally listed Catherine being there for trooping of the colour ( which later got removed, she still could be ,- but obvs Will is protecting her ) , tickets sold out by 90% , which is normally very slow !! - goes to show what Real pulling power is… I seem to remember other times where they were doing things , the timing was bad , and they got overshadowed big time She’s tanking in the polls , They are N F I to anything of substance that matters , So annoying as all their latest PR is , it’s really a ‘ blip on the radar ‘ ( And a new PR push to improve in the UK !…. That’s got Buckleys of happening 🙄😂) post link: https://ift.tt/Wn9kDQv author: CheapLingonberry6785 submitted: March 08, 2024 at 08:08PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. A speech by The Duchess of Edinburgh at the Community Sport and Recreation Awards, at Headingley Stadium, Leeds, ahead of The Duke of Edinburgh’s 60th birthday:
First may I say how wonderful it is to be here with so many people who are doing so much to change lives through grassroots sport. There have been some remarkable stories that have been honoured today and a particular congratulations to Fulham Reach Boat Club for being recognised as Community Club of the Year.
If I may, I beg your indulgence for a few minutes, as I wanted to also take this opportunity to recognise another great milestone and share a small tribute to my darling husband as he celebrates his 60th Birthday, this Sunday.
Now I know from the many years of marriage we have chalked up, 25 years in June to be precise, he will be horrified at seeing me up here speaking about him in public. Without looking at him, I am guessing he will now be sitting back with slightly narrowed eyes, possibly with his arms folded, or one arm stretched out across the table and to all intents and purposes looking identical to his father when I made speeches about him.
I twice spoke about The late Duke of Edinburgh in his presence, on both occasions feeling like I was about to launch myself out of an airplane without a parachute, but holding on to the vague hope of a soft landing. You have to appreciate that my father-in-law never liked anyone to pay him compliments, believing that it was the organisations he supported that were important, not him.
However, the fact that I wasn't in the doghouse after either of the speeches reassured me that I hadn't at least committed any major faux pas and I was therefore able to stand the getaway cars down.
So, like then and with my husband of the same opinion as my father-in-law, and with fresh fully fuelled cars at the ready here goes – as I give you more of an insight of the man to whom I am so proud to be married.
Edward is probably best known for his support of the youth organisation the DofE, founded by his father which takes much of his time as he chairs committees, writes strategies as he helps to guide and shape the current activities and future of the charity in the UK and across the world. He challenges those who lead it, encourages others who work within it or support it, and loves meeting and chatting with those who benefit from it. You can only guess the number of hours he devotes to this, the most inspiring of youth charities.
Beyond the DofE, he passionately supports an array of other charities and organisations, each of which he takes as seriously. Whether it be focussing on the sporting endeavours from athletes around the Commonwealth both able and disabled; encouraging organisations offering opportunities for people to gain access to sport and activities such as the fantastic work of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, which we are celebrating today; working throughout the arts with young talented musicians, or seasoned professionals who enrich our society, or visiting and encouraging the wonderful Central Caribbean Marine Institute which does so much to protect and enhance our unseen and vital underwater world. The list is long and a reflection of just some of his interests.
I encourage you to take a walk through his CV of affiliations and marvel at the breadth of them, each doing their part to make our world a better place and to understand that he is not just a name on a piece of paper, but that he commits of himself to them all and cares deeply for each of them.
He takes undoubted pride in his military affiliations too. Not only do I think that he wears a uniform extremely well, he takes an enormous interest in their vital work and loves nothing better than to go offline and spend happy hours talking one-to-one with those who do so much to serve our country.
He has been my guide and shown me the way over the years. He has given me much help and advice (not always taken I admit), and his knowledge and instincts that have been honed over decades of service are invaluable - so we share speech notes (not this one, sorry darling!), chat through issues our patronages may be tackling, and together I think we make quite a good team.
Like an iceberg, what is seen above the water or in public is only a small proportion of what goes on behind the scenes. What is never seen or can ever be quantified is the effort spent on ensuring good governance for his patronages, encouraging people to support worthwhile causes, chairing committees, meeting chief executives and think tanks, writing papers, speeches, forewords, introductions, the list goes on.
But whatever he is doing he gives 150% of himself, and if all else fails he gives any energy he has left out to our exhausted dogs or laying waste to the garden. Like my father-in-law, my husband never seeks compliments for himself. So when acknowledgment has come his way it has always been a total surprise to him, which is why I am grateful for this chance to, for once, be able to publicly celebrate and compliment him.
He was so happy and humbled when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth made him a Knight of The Garter in 2006 and was equally delighted and moved the day His Majesty The King – who we are both incredibly proud to support – made him Duke of Edinburgh. Both he deserves in equal measure and I am so proud of the man he is.
He is the best of fathers, the most loving of husbands and still is my best friend.
So here's to you my darling Edward and may I along with all your family and so many friends and many others wish you the Happiest of Birthdays!
