VPN for streaming shows
Title: Unlocking Unlimited Entertainment: The Power of VPNs for Streaming Shows
In an era where streaming platforms offer an endless array of shows and movies, geographical restrictions can be a major buzzkill. But fear not, as VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) have emerged as the ultimate solution for bypassing these barriers and unlocking a world of entertainment.
VPN services work by rerouting your internet connection through a server in a different location, effectively masking your actual IP address and making it appear as though you're accessing the internet from a different region. This enables you to access streaming content that may be restricted in your current location due to licensing agreements or government censorship.
One of the primary benefits of using a VPN for streaming shows is access to a wider range of content libraries. For instance, a show that's available on Netflix US may not be accessible in other countries due to licensing restrictions. By connecting to a VPN server in the United States, you can instantly gain access to the full catalog of Netflix US, opening up a plethora of binge-worthy content.
Moreover, VPNs offer an added layer of privacy and security while streaming. By encrypting your internet traffic, VPNs help protect your sensitive data from prying eyes, including hackers, ISPs, and government surveillance agencies. This means you can enjoy your favorite shows without worrying about potential privacy breaches or data theft.
However, it's essential to choose a reliable VPN provider that offers fast connection speeds, a wide selection of server locations, and robust security features. Additionally, be mindful of any potential legal implications of accessing geo-restricted content in your region.
In conclusion, VPNs are indispensable tools for avid streamers looking to unlock a world of entertainment without boundaries. With the right VPN service, you can enjoy seamless streaming of your favorite shows from anywhere in the world, all while ensuring your privacy and security remain intact.

Access geo-restricted content
Accessing geo-restricted content refers to the practice of accessing online content that is typically restricted to certain geographic regions. Many websites and streaming platforms limit access to their content based on the user's location, often due to licensing agreements or regulatory requirements. However, with the right tools and techniques, it is possible to bypass these restrictions and unlock a world of content from anywhere in the world.
One common method to access geo-restricted content is by using a virtual private network (VPN). A VPN allows users to route their internet connection through a server in a different location, effectively masking their actual location and granting access to region-locked content. By connecting to a VPN server in a different country, users can trick websites and platforms into believing they are accessing the content from an approved location.
Another way to bypass geo-restrictions is through the use of proxy servers. Proxies act as intermediaries between the user and the restricted content, again allowing users to appear as though they are accessing the content from an approved location. While proxies can be effective, they may not offer the same level of security and privacy as VPNs.
It is important to note that circumventing geo-restrictions may violate the terms of service of some platforms, so users should proceed with caution and be aware of the potential legal implications. Additionally, not all methods of bypassing geo-restrictions are foolproof, and users may encounter issues such as slower connection speeds or content blocks.
In conclusion, while accessing geo-restricted content is possible with the right tools and knowledge, users should exercise caution and be aware of the potential risks involved. Whether using a VPN, proxy, or other methods, it is important to stay informed and make informed decisions when accessing content from around the world.
Secure streaming connection
A secure streaming connection is essential for maintaining the privacy and security of online streaming activities. Whether you are watching movies, TV shows, live sports, or engaging in video conferences, ensuring a secure connection is paramount in safeguarding your sensitive information from prying eyes.
By utilizing encryption technology, secure streaming connections enable data to be transmitted in a coded format, making it unreadable to anyone intercepting the information. This encryption process converts the data into a secure format, ensuring that only the intended recipient can access and decipher the content.
One of the most common encryption protocols used for secure streaming connections is HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure). This protocol adds a layer of security by encrypting the data exchanged between the streaming server and the user's device, preventing unauthorized access and potential data breaches.
In addition to encryption, secure streaming connections also employ other security measures such as authentication, which verifies the identities of both the streaming server and the user, and data integrity checks to ensure that the transmitted data has not been tampered with during transfer.
Overall, a secure streaming connection offers peace of mind knowing that your online activities are protected from cyber threats and unauthorized access. By prioritizing security when streaming content online, you can enjoy a seamless and worry-free viewing experience while safeguarding your sensitive information.
Internet privacy for streaming
Title: Safeguarding Your Internet Privacy While Streaming
In today's digital age, streaming services offer a convenient way to access a vast array of entertainment content. However, as you indulge in your favorite shows and movies, it's essential to prioritize your internet privacy to safeguard your personal information from potential threats.
Firstly, opt for reputable streaming platforms that prioritize user privacy and employ robust security measures. Look for services that encrypt data transmission and have transparent privacy policies outlining how they handle your information.
Utilizing a virtual private network (VPN) is another effective strategy to enhance your internet privacy while streaming. A VPN creates a secure connection between your device and the internet, encrypting your data and concealing your IP address. By masking your online activity, VPNs help prevent third parties, such as hackers or internet service providers, from monitoring your streaming habits.
Regularly updating your streaming software and devices is crucial for maintaining optimal security. Software updates often include patches for known vulnerabilities, reducing the risk of exploitation by malicious actors seeking to compromise your privacy.
Furthermore, exercise caution when accessing free streaming websites or using unofficial streaming apps, as they may pose significant privacy risks. These platforms often lack proper security measures and may contain malware or intrusive advertisements that compromise your privacy and device security.
Lastly, be mindful of the information you share online, especially on social media platforms. Avoid disclosing sensitive personal details that could be exploited by cybercriminals to target you with phishing scams or identity theft.
By implementing these proactive measures, you can enjoy the diverse content offered by streaming services while safeguarding your internet privacy against potential threats. Prioritizing privacy ensures a safer and more secure streaming experience for you and your loved ones.

I Eat Cannibals (1980) Ted Nicolaou’s forgotten action comedy. This was to be the “the most ferocious story of revenge ever filmed.”
Leatherbabies (1984) Story unknown at this time.
Alter Ego (1985) Directed by Peter Manoogian (Arena), another early Paul De Meo and Danny Bilson effort that was to star Jeffrey Byron (of Empire’s The Dungeonmaster) as a sci-fi hero pitched halfway between Mandroid and Jack Deth. The film never got beyond initial planning due to lack of interest from international buyers. Brian Yuzna (Re-Animator) and Rob Goethals (Swamp Thing) were also attached as producer & writer at a stage prior to Bilson/De Meo coming on board.
Crimelord (1985) Some kind of crime/cop movie .
Decapitron (1986) Interchangeable technology is a popular theme at Empire. One of the more ambitious films is Decapitron, currently subtitled “The Devastation Creation” and also written by Paul De Meo and Danny Bilson. The Decapitron is a robot with five different heads: a surveillance head, which is an extremely sophisticated information gathering and observation device, an omnitech head, which is an all-purpose utility-super analyzer unit useful for biochemical breakdowns, medical diagnosis and crime detection; a humanoid head, which can simulate the appearance of any human male in his mid-thirties; a war head with advanced firepower, and finally, a doomsday head, the ultimate weapon of last resort.
The film was to be directed by Peter Manoogian, however, following the collapse of Empire Studios in 1989, and no doubt fueled by the cool reception given to Empire’s other ‘big’ picture Robot Jox, the script was finally shelved. Bilson & De Meo then went on to write the screenplay for the Disney’s The Rocketeer in 1991. The character of Decapitron was, however, to re-appear in micro-form as one of the puppets in Jeff Burr’s entry in the Full Moon killer toy franchise Puppet Master 4 and Puppet Master 5.
Paul De Meo acknowledges that “Decapitron” is an outgrowth of Eliminators, which was an intriguing idea. Charles Band wanted to go further with it. While the Mandroid is half man, half machine, the Decapitron is all robot. Unlike the Terminator, he’s the good guy. He has a kid sidekick, and they go into a city which has its own rules there’s been a plague in the city and it is under quarantine. The inhabitants are survivors of a biological disaster.”
Bilson and De Meo believe that a good sense of humor delicately applied can compensate for a less than generous budget. Trancers derives humor from its bizarre situation and future slang. In Eliminators, the Mandroid keeps commenting on how unbelievable and comic-book-like the whole thing is, putting the audience on his side. De Meo is aware that the proper tone for a picture is important. He and Bilson like to add humor but they are making action pictures, not comedies. Also, I may be wrong, but I remember hearing this film would’ve been Charles Band’s most expensive picture ever.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Why then are you spending $10 million on Decapitron? Charles Band: If one or two pictures out of 25 cost that much and all the rest average $2-3 million, we’re still pretty true to our formula. There are pictures that will cost more only because of what it’ll take to make them. It’s not because we’re putting in a $4 million star or spending a million dollars on a director. Decapitron has huge amounts of special effects, pyrotechnics, pieces of city blocks getting blown up it’s just an expensive movie to make. Sometimes a project comes along that we’re so excited about that we want to do it justice. Many pictures we make are designed to be made on a budget, but we don’t want to short- change the story or the movie itself. You can make, in theory, a brilliant horror film if your location is a house. You don’t need $20 million and a lot of special effects. On From Beyond, for example, we have not only John Buechler, who is our close effects associate involved, but we have three other FX teams, too. There’s a huge amount of special effects half the budget of this expensive picture Is going to effects. But again, if your picture takes place In a house in this case, a very large house it’s limited in many potential costs. But If your picture takes place in the future on some planet, in Los Angeles on city streets, with many effects, it costs money. In the case of Decapitron and one other picture that we’ll be announcing soon, the budgets are up there. But everything else is averaged out at about $3 million.
“I did read the DECAPITRON script. It was pretty good though there was a fundamental flaw in the premise. The central character was supposed to carry 5 or 6 replacement heads capable of different functions. Since, in reality, the heads would be masks worn by an actor, they would have to be larger than normal. The script described him carrying them in something the size of a briefcase when it would really have to be the size of a footlocker. Imagine a character dodging bullets and running through action scenes lugging something that big!” – Kenneth J. Hall (film-maker)
Barbarian Women (1986) Another sword and sorcery film, probably set in the future or another dimension.
Bloodless (1986) Jungle/Ancient horror maybe. Slasher or vampire. Anyone got anything?
Journeys Through The Darkzone (1986) Written by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo (Eliminators), I got nothing much on this. The title was used later as a tagline for Trancers 4.
Show No Mercy (1986) Would be action flick directed by Peter Manoogian.
Tomb (1986) Unmade jungle thriller.
Murdercycle (1986) Originally titled BATTLE BIKES, info is unknown on this version, but fans would later see this art and title recycled for a future Full Moon release about soldiers fighting a robotic alien.
Vulcana (1986) Action/fantasy about a warrior woman.
Charles Band & Jack Kirby Unfilmed Projects
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Mindmaster (1986) involves a scientist who is caught in an accident which leaves him debilitated, and must use a thought-controlled robot he invented to stop a crazed fellow scientist.
Doctor Mortalis (1986) is an all-powerful wizard, the leader of a secret sect of sorcerers known as The Dark Order. His faithful sidekick, “Egghead,” is a witty half-human, half computer genius who possesses fantastic special powers.
Legion of Doom This was going to be Charles Band’s superhero team movie. He once stated that films like Mandroid and Invisible: The Chronicles of Benjamin Knight were efforts to slowly build characters for a team movie. So it’s entirely possible Dark Angel and Doctor Mordrid could have been on the team as well in this movie.
Berserker (1986) Unfilmed A big fan of RE-ANIMATOR, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli wrote BERSERKER, about a bodybuilder who abuses steroids and becomes a mutant.
Bloody Bess (1987) Unfilmed Stuart Gordon planned this adventure movie around the time he was making From Beyond, and also first attempting to raise a decent budget for his pet project The Shadow Over Innsmouth. It was to star Jeffrey Combs, and Barbara Crampton as a female pirate, out to drink rum, steal gold, and generally show the boys a thing or two about buckling swashes. Rumour has it ex-Empire director Renny Harlin (Prison, Die Hard 2) must have liked the idea, since he lifted it for his 1995 box-office bomb Cutthroat Island, which I have never bothered to watch.
Pand Evil (1987) To be produced and directed by Gorman Bechard (Psychos In Love, Cemetery High).
Fiends (1987) Info not known at this time.
PULSEPOUNDERS (1988) Incomplete An unfinished Empire Pictures film directed by Charles Band, and starring Tim Thomerson, Helen Hunt, Jeffrey Combs, Barbra Crampton, and Richard Moll.
Here’s what I’ve heard Charles Band had to say about PulsePounders: “PULSEPOUNDERS is completely shot, it just needs post-production,” says Band. “I still hope to get it out of the mess it’s tangled up in and release it. David Gale is terrific in it, and with him gone now, it’s all the more reason to get it out where people can see him one last time.”
Now here’s what Jeffrey Combs had to say: “Pulsepounders is a real curiosity,” Combs says. “It’s a movie – or a segment of a trilogy – that i did back in the 1980’s while over in Italy. As far as I knew, that movie never got finished. Empire Pictures, Charlie Band’s company at that time, tanked. So that film was in pieces and incomplete, and so far as I’d heard just lost in the wars. Now it’s showing up on the internet as something that’s coming out. I did my segment soon after Re-Animator with Barbara Crampton, the late David Gale and David Warner. Other than the dailies I saw at the time, I never heard or saw anything about it again until information about it suddenly turned up on the internet. So who knws about that. Maybe the next time I talk to Charlie Band, I’ll ask him about it.”
“I was in a segment called ‘The Evil Clergyman‘, based on a Lovecraft story, Combs continues. “They did a short Trancers / Jack Deth story “Trancers: City of Lost Angels” which Helen Hunt was in. And they did one more with Richard Moll, based on another Empire Pictures movie [Dungeonmaster] that had been successful. So it would have been three little odd and hastily connected pieces. They’d all been shot, but they were never able to finish them up.
Zombie Hotel (1989) “Spend a night with the Living Dead.” Subspecies director Ted Nicolaou was set to direct.
Apparatus (1989) A Futuristic thriller that was to have been directed by Larry Cohen (It’s Alive) that apparently concerned “Big Brother'” types controlling the masses through apparatus attached to their bodies. Abandoned also when Empire Pictures folded.
Hotel Dick (1989) Another Empire comedy to be produced by Frank Yablans (Buy & Cell, The Caller).
Bimbo Barbeque (1989) A planned sequel to Assault of the Killer Bimbos, a girls on the run sex comedy that inspired THELMA & LOUISE. It’s mentioned in ASSAULT’s end credits.
Entangled (1989) Would’ve been produced by Irwin Yablans (Halloween).
Floater (1989) Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 & 2) signed on to make a $6 million supernatural thriller, one of Band’s occasional attempts at ‘top-drawer’ quality product. Again, the project was abandoned when Empire ceased. Tobe went on to direct Spontaneous Combustion instead.
Subterraneans (1989) Heard this was to be the first of a trilogy about a culture of small evolved apes that live in the NYC Subway Tunnels.
Empire Films Never Made Undated
Arsenal A no doubt action adventure.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Cassex Virtual reality sex comedy.
The Colony Apparently about yuppie witches.
Dolls 2 Director of the original Stuart Gordon was, at one point, very interested in directing a sequel. The initial storyline would have followed surviving characters Judy and Ralph back to Boston in which Ralph would have indeed married Judy’s mother and they would all become a family. Until, one day Judy would receive a box sent from England which would contain the toy makers, Gabriel and Hilary, as dolls. Gabriel was played by Guy Rolfe (Andre Toulon in Puppet Master 3, 4, 5, 7) by the way. It’s unknown to me why it was never made.
InHuman Info unknown at this time.
L.A.B.C. Anyone got anything? I suspect this to be a post-apocalyptic film, which were big in the 1980’s.
Parasite II Following the Charles Band/Demi Moore original, the sequel never hit the script stage after Embassy Pictures fell apart. According to the poster below, actor Robert Glaudini was expected to return.
Shadows and Whispers Unknown about this possibly erotic thriller, to be directed by David Schmoeller (Crawlspace).
Space Sluts in the Slammer Possibly part of Charlie’s uncredited erotic Sci-Fi adventures like Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity.
Strange Magic I got nothing other than this poster. “The King of Evil is dead. Long live the Queen.”
-tomboftheunproducedhorrormovie
The History of Empire Films Part Seven – Films Never Made (1980-1989) I Eat Cannibals (1980) Ted Nicolaou's forgotten action comedy. This was to be the "the most ferocious story of revenge ever filmed."

Blog #4: Adapt or Die: Marketing Agencies Rush to Alternative Advertising
As the number of Coronavirus cases continues to rise, more and more businesses are turning to remote work. This outbreak has thoroughly tested the ability of companies to adapt to different and less traditional forms of marketing, especially those of digital and content marketing. This realm of marketing is of particular interest to myself, as I believe it to be a crucial part of any business’s future.
While some advertising campaigns have halted altogether, many companies are shifting away from some traditional types of marketing, such as billboards and event marketing, and are instead moving online. This is the case for one advertising agency, AML Group, whose clients are mainly in the financial sector (Handley, 2020). While television advertisements are still a popular form (and perhaps even more so at the moment) of ad media, surprisingly other, seemingly “obsolete” channels of communication such as newspapers and print media are regaining lost ground, according to AML Group’s chief executive Ian Henderson (Handley, 2020).
Burger King France advertising how to make a “Quarantine Whopper” from home.
That being said, television and the internet have been the major focus for advertising, and given that more people are under government order to stay home, consumers will be using their technology all the time. Unfortunately, shoots for commercials are being canceled at the moment, due to restrictions on amount of people, transportation etc., leaving companies potentially having to rely on other methods such as CGI, animation, and illustration for television advertisements in the future (Handley, 2020). Content marketing is also increasing in popularity, as more brands attempt to directly communicate with their consumers via the internet. Content marketing focuses on building a relationship with the ultimate consumer, and unlike advertising, is not “overtly promotional” and instead seeks to have brands become “storytellers” by providing essential information (Fukano, 2020). This approach is not only arguably one of the best ways to communicate with consumers online, but is also effective in trying times, such as in our current situation with the Coronavirus.

Guinness’s St. Patrick’s Day ad addressing Coronavirus was a hit with consumers.
However, the shift in advertising’s channels of communication is perhaps the easiest part of this whole situation for businesses. More concerns are currently being placed upon decreasing ad spending as well as how to appropriately address target audiences during this time of uncertainty and hypersensitivity in the world. Many companies are worried about offending their audiences, or overwhelming them with the constant reminder of Coronavirus. Another brand executive, Sarah Douglas, CEO of AMV BBDO in London, is suggesting to her clients that they focus their advertising message on one of two things: “acts not ads”, which centers on practical help such as donations or adapting manufacturing facilities to produce necessities; or for an alternative, an emphasis on joy (Handley, 2020). It’s safe to say that we could all use a good laugh right now.

COLLEGE HUMOUR
CollegeHumor is an internet comedy company based in Los Angeles. They have been making videos since 1999 and are still currently working, make a lot of satirical videos based on several topics or problems in society.
The absurdity and over exaggeration of simple problems or facts in their videos is comical to the views as they are relatable . For example in the “Mystery Friend Request” sketch. They play on the idea of Sherlock Holmes as we see Trapp and Siobhan trying to figure out if Trapp knows someone who has just added him on Facebook. This is relatable as typically people get friend requests on social media from people they known or have mutual friend they might know. This situation is familiar as we have all had that one request from someone we might know. As they sketch continues we see the pair dig deeper into the persons social media, finding out that they have mutuals, that they have pictures of them together and that they went to school together. While they dig the pair display detective stereotypes.
(Moustache, Bubble pipe and Hats), this is comical as these props have come from thin air and now have been accepted in to the narrative without question. This is also seen in the way the characters interact with each other, clearly mimicking Sherlock Holmes (Trapp) and his companion Watson (Siobhan). The ending of the sketch is most memorable as the pair find out that they do know the person who has friend requested them. Trapp makes a dramatic explanation as to why he didn’t remember the person, it is simply because he is a shitty person. This is unexpected and is sure to make the audience laugh due to it’s absurdity. I love the dramatic retelling of this simple situation as it turns something trivial and dull into an intriguing and funny narrative.
College humour isn’t afraid to criticise and ridicule any topic. This can be seen in the “Every beauty vlogger” sketch. This sketch critises and makes fun of the YouTube beauty community and their creators., it highlights how these content creators typical work and how they want their audience to see them. It basically opens the audience to they idea of not everything is what it seems and that the content creators aren’t your friends like they portray themselves to be. They only want you to give them attention and to buy what they are advertising so they may profit. It also highlights an endless cycle, as in the “Every YouTuber” sketch they end the sketch off by stating that as soon as the viewer grows out of enjoying their content, another person will replace them. Indicating that the audience is expandable and easily replaceable. These sketches create a darker twist on how the internet has effected made a huge impact on society and how people are so easily fooled by what they see. It really opens up the viewers mind to a different perspective as they typically only see one.

By no means Before had the world faced a risk as probably devastating as the A-bomb—and the even more lethal H-bomb that followed. Educational movies confirmed find out how to "survive" a nuclear blast by crawling under a desk, as if a couple of inches of wood made any distinction. In movie theaters, basic monsters of the ‘30s and ’40s have been replaced by atom-spawned horrors. Unseen enemies had been all over the place: from devilish rock-and-roll music to morally-corrupt books reminiscent of Lolita and Catcher within the Rye. Comic-books corrupted the minds of our youths, and godless Communists constituted a red menace to be stopped using any means essential. ATOMIC-AGE CTHULHU brings Lovecraftian horror roleplaying into the put up-conflict golden age. Right here you find background and history that led to the event of the 1950s world, along with new expertise and professions in your investigators. A variety of Sinister Seeds are included that can assist you develop your personal ‘50s horrors, however seven full adventures are ready for you to spring on your unsuspecting gamers. If you have any inquiries concerning the place and how to use zentai spandex (www.zentai-spandex.com), you can contact us at our own web page. By Brian Sammons, Christopher Smith Adair, Matt Sanborn, Oscar Rios, Tom Lynch, Brian Courtemanche, Michael Dziesinski. 224 pages, with handouts.
Books, motion pictures and widespread culture within the 1950s and 1960s had been stuffed with Atomic Age themes. The Red Menace (1949) Communists in California plot to take over the U.S. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) asks what would occur if Jesus Christ returned to earth to argue for peaceful use of the atom and world government — the answer, in line with the film, he can be shot. On the Seashore (1959) Australia is the final place on earth not yet contaminated by radioactive fallout from a nuclear warfare. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) follows a brainwashed Korean veteran despatched to assassinate political candidates. In Seven Days in Might (1964) outlaw army leaders take over the government with the intention to wage the Chilly War appropriately. Fail Protected(1964) explored what would occur if a nuclear warfare was began by accident. Dr. Strangelove or How I Realized to Cease Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) is a black comedy masterpiece that pokes enjoyable on the absurdity of the Chilly Warfare. In the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) atomic radiation creates quite a lot of gigantic sea creatures. Them (1954) features large atomic ants. The start of the top (1957) options big atomic grasshoppers. Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956) trumped everyone else with a giant dragon brought on by testing atomic bombs.
Seventy years in the past today on July 16, 1945, scientists noticed "the end of the world"—how a kind of scientists’ descendants described to me the first ever-nuclear blast. Code-named Trinity, the blast occurred in a remote part of the brand new Mexico desert outside of Los Alamos Nationwide Laboratory. 2 billion. The goal was to beat the Nazis in a race to create an atomic bomb. The scientists sequestered at Los Alamos worked devilishly long hours, often with the sinking feeling that they have been falling behind on this life-and-dying scientific race. In reality, they were considerably and miraculously ahead. The aim for a number of the scientists was to create a weapon so monstrous it will finish major-energy wars. And, in this, they accomplished their goal. For others the objective was to beat the Germans, an finish that was reached impartial of the creation of an atomic bomb. And for others nonetheless, the goal was to take science to its logical conclusion, releasing the enormous potential of nuclear energy to achieve wonderful advancements while controlling its dangers. At the moment, radiation therapy kills most cancers cells, and nuclear vitality is powering the new Horizon spacecraft that passed Pluto yesterday.
Almost instantly, the scientists who had seen the tip of the world started educating the general public and coverage leaders in regards to the unprecedented destructiveness of nuclear weapons. In 1939, Albert Einstein wrote to President Roosevelt that nuclear weapons had the potential to take out complete ports; by the time of Little Boy and Fat Man, zentai spandex nuclear weapons could vaporize entire cities. In the present day, as Steven Starr, Lynn Eden and Theodore Postol have written, one 800-kiloton bomb dropped over Manhattan would create a fireplace zone masking a total area of ninety to one hundred fifty square miles. Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles carry a whole bunch of such warheads. Trinity scientists and others started newsletters and writing campaigns. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the place I work, revealed its first newsletter in December 1945. Seventy years later, that group continues to have interaction scientists, policy makers and the general public on existential threats. Those early scientists also helped launched worldwide convenings like Pugwash to advocate for disarmament. Coverage leaders took up their challenge and over the course of 70 years created an internet of arms control and disarmament agreements that have efficiently lessened the number and spread of nuclear weapons.
At the moment, 70 years later, we've got much to have a good time and much to worry. The spread of nuclear weapons has slowed significantly due to an arms control structure constructed over many years, significantly the 1970 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The variety of nuclear weapons has additionally decreased dramatically, from a high of round 70,000 in 1986, to round 17,000 right now. And this week’s historic agreement between the United States and Iran exhibits that diplomatic acumen and scientific prowess can nonetheless come collectively to assist limit and delay the spread of nuclear weapons. Still, today’s world remains exceedingly harmful. In January of this year, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the fingers of the iconic Doomsday Clock from 5 to 3 minutes to midnight. A brand new spherical of arms management efforts, and an updating of current arms control regimes, may be very a lot wanted. The Iran negotiations present hope that progress might be made in updating and rethinking the nuclear security structure. Seventy years ago, scientists stood in the desert to witness the unleashing of the world’s most highly effective weapon. As we speak, 70 years later, we now have successfully slowed the unfold of nuclear weapons, lowered their numbers, and limited their use. Seventy years from now, will we be capable of say the same factor?

Last week, only days after he was nominated by President Donald Trump to replace Dan Coats as Director of National Intelligence, Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Tex.) withdrew after it was discovered that he had virtually no intelligence or national security experience. Such experience is mandated by the law which created the position of Director of National Intelligence and when it was discovered Ratcliffe had embellished what little experience he had, the already tepid reception he received became downright chilly and it was clear that the Texas congressman would not be confirmed. Ratcliffe’s withdrawal led to a new question: with no pending nominee, there Office of the DNI would need an acting director. The current deputy, CIA veteran Sue Gordon, was reportedly not considered for the nomination by Trump and when it became clear that a new nominee would be needed, and that it would not be Gordon, this created an awkward situation. Seeing the writing on the wall, Sue Gordon resigned her position with an effective date of August 15. Gordon’s resignation, and her departure from the federal government, represents a drain of talent and experience which has been a hallmark of the Trump administration; it started out with the State Department under the leadership of Rex Tillerson, and this exodus spread to other cabinet level agencies such as the Agriculture Department, which is in the process of losing some of its most experienced scientists. This, along with the federal judiciary being filled with hundreds of Trump nominees in their 30s and 40s, will be among the most salient parts of Trump’s legacy.
Andrew McCabe, the former chief counterterrorism official at the FBI and one of the most important “bogeyman of the Right,” throughout the FBI’s investigation into the actions of the Trump campaign in 2016 and the early Trump administration in 2017, has filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department over his termination only hours before his retirement from the bureau was due to take effect. McCabe is despised by Trump supporters because he approved the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign, and he has been assailed as a leading member of the so-called “Deep State” of bureaucrats and career Washington D.C. professionals who have stood in the way of Trump’s political movement. Because he was fired before his retirement began, McCabe lost out on government retirement benefits that he would have been due, and the loss of these benefits is the basis of his lawsuit. McCabe’s lawsuit, if it is permitted to go forward, could have serious implications for the Trump administration once the suit reaches discovery. While this is by no means an existential threat to Trump or his administration, it does threaten to shine light on an area which former Attorney General Jeff Sessions sought to keep concealed.
In January 2018, Babe.net, a pop culture website and blog targeted at apparently post-feminist 18-24 year old women, published a story by writer Katie Way in which she chronicled how an anonymous twenty-something women had gone on a date with comedian Aziz Ansari which, she alleged, turned into the worst night of her life. The story, which came out just as the wave of the MeToo movement began to crest, attracted immediate attention. A few months earlier, MeToo was born out of a series of articles outing powerful men for engaging in behavior towards women which ranged from inappropriate to sexual assault. One such article was a lengthy expose of wildly popular comedian Louis C.K., who was long rumored to have used his fame to coerce women into sexually uncomfortable situations and then to force their silence. Aziz Ansari had achieved a similar level of popular acclaim both for his stand-up comedy and for his roles in Parks and Recreation, among other shows. And now it appeared that an emerging media outlet had scooped a story in which Ansari was made to appear to engage in similar behavior to Louis C.K. This story, however, came out just as the scene at Babe.net itself was becoming tumultuous. The site, itself a spinoff from another web imprint, was not profitable and was instead dependent on continued investment from venture capitalists. The office culture of Babe.net, according to several of its former staffers, was little better than the accusations levelled against Aziz Ansari in its breakout story. Babe.net continues to exist today, but it is largely a zombie form of what it was a year earlier, and most of its most significant contributors have moved on to other things.
Anyone who has lived in a city or town in a low-lying area near water, has dealt with mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have been the bane of humanity for thousands of years, but their role in spreading diseases, such as malaria, was only understood at the outset of the twentieth century. Prior to then it was thought that malaria—which literally means “bad air,”—was caused by the poor air in a particular locale; a result of the so-called “Miasma Theory,” of diseases. Taken more broadly, this is about the role of mosquitoes in shaping human history and viewing them, as small and insignificant as they seem, as apex predators. Any book which proposes that human history turned on the role of a single organism is generally suspect; it is certain to have fascinating historical turns, but, because of its singular focus, it is also certain to stretch logic and causation in the interest of making its intended point. Nonetheless, there is one jaw-dropping statistic from this which cannot be ignored: “Just twenty-two years after Columbus stepped onto Hispaniola, a census revealed that the local Taino population had dropped from between five and eight million people to just twenty-six thousand. Along with smallpox and influenza, mosquito-borne diseases led, by Winegard’s estimate, to the deaths of ninety-five million indigenous inhabitants of the Americas, from a pre-contact population of about a hundred million.”
Before the 1980s, musicians of all levels of popularity, were able to make a living off of their artistry. Whether through joining the union and performing in sanctioned-clubs, getting signed by a record company and cutting an album—or albums—in the studio, which were then pressed and pushed for radio play, and through touring, from the dawn of recorded music through the 1980s, a musician could expect to have a reasonable career. This no longer appears to the be case, as the music and recording industry has undergone a series of seismic shifts, starting first with the weakening of musician’s unions and the introduction of Compact Discs or CDs (and less expensive cassettes) in the 1980s, the development of the internet in the 1990s, and the proliferation of songs in the MP3 format in the late 1990s and 2000s. Making money as a musician now seems, other than for the top 2% of artists, a fool’s errand. There are two things interesting about this trend: first, that it has occurred in a context where the sonic quality of recorded music has decreased from what it was on vinyl albums in the 1970s, and second, that it has not deterred young men and women from becoming musicians. This is a meditation on the music industry as it was, as it became, as it is, and as it could be.
Existentialism is a dreary intellectual pursuit. If, at its core, life is devoid of meaning beyond the fact that we persist as living organisms, then the proponents of such a belief system must be dull, unimaginative individuals with whom it is painful to join in a social capacity. While not boorish, existentialists ponder subject matter which would be unwelcome at most parties. And yet most existentialists in the mid-twentieth century were not boring individuals, and instead sought out drink and drugs as a way to prevent the “hardening” of life. Drinking and partying is often seen, especially in the western mind, as a wasteful as it is pleasurable. This mindset, no doubt rooted in the Puritan and Protestant mindsets of preservation of the earthly life as a means to gain just rewards in the afterlife, finds no traction in existentialism. “Partying can involve a similar act of destroying such expectations, as well as expending time, money, food, drink and brain cells. Some might call this a waste, but what are we saving ourselves for? A good life isn’t always a long one, and a long life isn’t necessarily a happy or fulfilled one. Rather, what’s important is to embrace life passionately. Existence is a process of spending ourselves, and sometimes requires leaving our former selves behind to create ourselves anew, thrusting forward into the future, disclosing our being into new realms.” Perhaps the most profound part of that, to me, is “existence is the process of spending ourselves,” which is an acknowledgment that we all face mortality and the ability to face it is, I think, largely based on the ability to honestly say that the act of spending has been enjoyable and satisfying. If that enjoyment and satisfaction be found in a bottle, then so be it. But, and this is important, the expense of life still involves the responsibilities to participate and create; which is perhaps why Sartre cured hangovers with amphetamines. Viewed in this lens, existentialism can be seen to cut through a series of societal norms and expectations about behaviors, and that alone makes it interesting, at least in this context.
Finally, the Center for Politics Crystal Ball takes a look back on the 2016 election and asks the question queued up by the release of the Mueller Report: did Russia’s interference in the election actually affect the results? It is important to consider two things when looking at this question: first, whether the Russian interference had any effect does not take away from the profoundly negative nature of the interference; and second the Russian interference could have had a result upon the election, without actually swaying any individual races. Both of these considerations are implicit in this article by Alan Abramowitz analyzing the 2016 election.
Welcome to the weekend.

Box Office Preview – AVENGERS: ENDGAME is Ready to Obliterate the Box Office
Box Office Preview – AVENGERS: ENDGAME is Ready to Obliterate the Box Office
Welcome back to the Beat’s weekly Box Office Preview!
Not sure I really need to tell anyone what movie is opening this Friday, because it’s a movie that may have one of the biggest anticipation factors… maybe ever? That’s right. Marvel fans had to wait a WHOLE YEAR to find out what happens next after the climactic ending of Avengers: Infinity War and that brings us to…
AVENGERS: ENDGAME (Marvel/Disney)
Cast: Brie Larson, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Karen Gillan, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Josh Brolin, Tom Holland? Chadwick Boseman? Bendict Cumberbatch? Sebastian Stan? Elizabeth Olsen? Don Cheadle? (Sniff)
Directed By: Anthony and Joe Russo (Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: Civil War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, You, Me and Dupree)
MPAA Rating: PG-13
To say that Avengers: Endgame is the “BIG ONE” would be the understatement of the century, and that is no hyperbole either… even if it sounds like it is. Okay, it probably is, but hey, that’s the world we live in now.
Last year’s Avengers: Infinity War set a new opening record of $257.7 million, besting the opening for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which kicked off a new series for that venerable franchise. Obviously, Marvel fans were dying to find out where the storyline with Thanos would go, who would live and who would die, the story having been set-up over the course of a decade of Marvel movies. The cliffhanger ending of Infinity War floored fans and left them immediately wanting more.
Even though we might be entering new territory with Endgame, there are some precedents to consider.
In fact, before we go on, let’s look at some numbers for comparison’s sake:
Marvel’s Avengers (5/4/12)
$207.4 million opening / $623.3 million domestic total
Avengers: Age of Ultron (5/1/15)
$191.3 million / $459 million
Avengers: Infinity War (4/27/18)
$257.7 million / $678.8 million
Captain America: Civil War (5/6/16)
$179.1 million / $408.8 million
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (11/4/16)
$248 million / $936.6 million
Star Wars: The Last Jedi (12/15/17)
$220.1 million / $620.2 million
When Marvel’s The Avengers opened with more than $200 million in 2012, many thought we had seen the biggest opening weekend we might ever see. In 2015, Jurassic World beat that record, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens besting Jurassic World later that same year. The Force Awakens went on to become the highest-grossing movie in North American history with $936.6 million, and Infinity War didn’t even come close to that amount. It wasn’t even able to best Black Panther’s $700 million domestic gross earlier last year, although it did come close.
Something that’s good to point out is that despite the success of 2012’s Avengers, its sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron opened softer and made less money in total, maybe because it wasn’t a direct sequel. Similarly, The Last Jedi opened about $28 million softer than its predecessor and didn’t even come close to the monster gross of Force Awakens. Bearing that in mind, one would think that might be the same case with Endgame. Nope!
First of all, Endgame is the direct sequel to a monster blockbuster, and obviously, fans are going to want to see the movie as soon as possible in fear of having the movie spoiled for them. In fact, Marvel and the Russo Brothers (directing their fourth Marvel movie) have gone out of their way to keep as much about the movie a secret as possible, not showing the movie to anyone before the premiere on Monday night.
What’s interesting is that Endgame is the height of the Marvel Universe where the movies no longer rely on one star like Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans to succeed. It’s very much the sum of the parts as Brie Larson and Benedict Cumberbatch and even Paul Rudd have managed to sustain blockbuster-grossing solo movies on their own, and bringing them together has a similar effect of the very first Avengers movie.
Not only is the “sequel factor” very much in play, but there’s also the “ending of a franchise” factor, which creates an elevated interest. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is a good example of how that story ending after eight movies made the last one even more of an event. Oddly, The Hunger Games: Mockinjay – Part 2 didn’t get quite the same bump, with the finale making less than Part 1.
Although I personally have been avoiding reviews and reactions for Endgame until I get to see the movie myself, Avengers: Endgame is already proving itself one of those review-proof phenomena that any positive reviews or reactions will only help to bring in any of the few non-believers. It’s absolutely no surprise that most of the earliest reviews were positive either.
Our own Kyle Pinion also reviewed it.
When tickets went on sale for Avengers: Endgame a few weeks back, it almost literally broke the internet with demand, setting a new record for Fandango and other ticket resellers for the highest first day of sales. At this point, many Thursday night and Friday screenings are already sold out, as are many of the premium showing in IMAX and the like, so that’s a lot of money already made. (In other words, those reviews won’t really matter either way.) On Monday, it was reported that the movie had already sold somewhere between $120 and 140 million in tickets, which is huge, but that could also point to an over-saturation of advance ticket-buying that would account for the number of sell-outs on Thursday and Friday. (There are a few theaters in the country which are showing Endgame literally around the clock all weekend… just in case someone wants to see it at 3 in the morning.)
Apparently, the movie also has the largest and most expensive marketing campaign ever staged by Disney for a Marvel movie, though that shouldn’t be too surprising, as the studio has been flying most of the cast around the world for international junkets. Obviously, this movie is going to be as big overseas (or even bigger), and matching Infinity War’s $2 billion gross shouldn’t be too big a problem.
Domestically, Disney is going to give the movie their widest release for a movie ever in more than 4,600 theaters, which is very close to every theater apart from art houses. That should best Despicable Me 3’s current record of 4,529 theaters in 2017, and The Force Awakens’ record of $59,982 for a theatrical average might also be toast after this weekend.
What’s interesting is that while Endgame should set a new opening record and open bigger than Infinity War, it could be more frontloaded to the point where it will only make slightly more in total. You see, there is a certain saturation of moviegoers who will see Endgame in theaters, and it’s basically the same people who went to see Infinity War in theaters, although more of them might go out opening weekend.
I think we’re looking at quite a few new records, although I’m not sure The Force Awakens’ $57 million Thursday preview is in danger. In that case, we’re talking about almost a decade of anticipation for another movie, whereas for Endgame it’s just one year. On the other hand, Force Awakens’ single day record of $119 million could be taken down when you add Endgame’s Thursday previews into Friday.
I think we’re looking at around $48 million on Thursday, $125 million on Friday, including those previews — that would break Force Awakens’ single day record — and then somewhere around $280 million for the weekend. (I’m not brave enough to state that this can open with $300 million even if it did sell tickets faster than Infinity War – “faster” is not the same as “more.” Sunday may also see a massive drop due to an important episode of Game of Thrones, too.) The movie should also hold up well for a few weekends with Warners’ Detective Pikachu on May 10 being the first real threat, and that’s not for two more weeks. It’s officially summer, folks!
(Feel free to give your own predictions below!)
This Week’s Box Office Predictions:
Avengers: Endgame (Marvel / Disney) – $282 million N/A
2 – 10. Who Cares?!?
Just kidding… expect big drops as many theaters give up screens to meet the demand for Endgame.
The Curse of La Llorona (New Line/WB) – $11.1 million -58%
Shazam! (New Line / WB) – $7.8 million -53%
Breakthrough (20th Century Fox) – $6.2 million -45%
Captain Marvel (Marvel Studios/Disney) – $4.5 million -51%
Little (Universal) – $3.5 million -52%
Dumbo (Disney) – $3.1 million -55%
Missing Link (U.A. Releasing) – $2.3 million -45%
Pet Sematary (Paramount) – $2.2 million -55%
Us (Universal) – $2 million -52%
It may seem like suicide for ANY movie to open against Avengers: Endgame, but there are still a few independent genre films giving it a go, including Roxanne Benjamin‘s thriller Body at Brighton Rock (Magnolia), Josh Lobo’s paranoid thriller I Trapped the Devil (IFC Midnight), as well as Ralph Fiennes’ The White Crow (Sony Pictures Classics) about Rudolf Nureyev’s defection to the West.
Check back through the weekend for updates on how Avengers: Endgame is doing, as far as breaking all those records mentioned above.
Next week, four new movies will tackle the second weekend of Avengers: Endgame. Competing for 2nd place, at best, is Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron in the comedy Long Shot, the thriller The Intruder, STXfilms’ Ugly Dolls and the action-thriller El Chicano.

Lets talk about gaming journalism (But not the way you’re thinking)
So it's that time of year again. The sun is hot, weather is dry and video game comedians on youtube are dropping their funnyman comedy acts in an effort to get people to take their totally new and unique views on video game reviews and journalism seriously. After seeing this happen time and time again like clockwork, and seeing the exact same talking points being raised one after another on a routine basis I figure it's time to write a quick, short thing and wave my counter argument like the tiniest flag no one will ever see; it doesn't matter.
You see, since the inception of gaming journalism as a whole there has never been a point where it wasn't incredibly biased or, as was most often the case, effectively just used as a sales tactic. Even when a magazine wasn't directly created and owned by the very company they were hyping products for, they were usually still in bed with them. At no point did anyone think a game would be getting poor reviews after seeing huge splash pages of advertisements for it for weeks, or even months. Even noted catastrophic 2000 flop Daikatana still managed to come through with middle-ground reviews from most “official” sources. Even E.T. A game utterly infamous in video gaming managed to make some 6's and other middle of the road numbers back when it released (Though admittedly getting a good sample size of reviews is difficult due to the nature of the internet and search results churning out almost nothing but modern youtube hits and memes about the game). There was no mythical golden-age of gaming journalism. The idea of integrity or objectivity in game reviews is something that has never existed -it could never even be compromised because it simply wasn't there.
But, even more to the point. Even far more hard hitting to all of this, is why does it matter to anyone? How does Joe McDudeguy from VidGaemMonthly have a more valuable opinion than XxWEEDLORDxX on Gamefaqs or Steam? There's never any kind of science involved in a game review, rarely ever any kind of critical analysis or discussion about the game's actual content or a serious breakdown of any kind. There is genuinely no reason to let a quote-unquote official review of a game influence your thoughts any more than some rando you don't know and never will. Getting mad that Joe McDudeguy gets paid to give every non-AAA title a 7/10 and anything with Call of Duty stapled to the name a 9/10 won't change anything if you keep giving them ad revenue and clicks. It won't change anything if you sit by and demand integrity while doing nothing to give them a reason to change and it's certainly not going to change the system if you keep just buying deeply flawed AAA titles because McDudeguy, or whatever sponsored youtube personality you're fond of, said it was good.
The only thing that could change the system is if every gamer started thinking. Critical analysis and thought is vital to development of any media as an art form. It's the difference between a film critic who will break a movie -even a movie they love- down and acknowledge its flaws and successes on a technical, narrative and even emotional level. And the eponymous game reviewer, the person who yells at footage of a game while saying over and over that it's bad because it's garbage. Never touching the substance of the game or delving deeper into why. And all of the thousands who follow them, never once taking their own thoughts and ideas into hand and just repeating the same arguments -same talking points- verbatim constantly. My favorite game is good because it's good, it can't be bad because I don't like bad games.
If you are at all displeased with the current system and entwined nature of marketing and journalism then remember; raging about it, yelling and harassing employees of websites and making big flashy videos where you proudly state the big problem is that money changes hands won't change anything. Nothing will change if we, the consumer, stubbornly refuse to change as we have for decades. As we still do. We still complain about the exact same Bethesda game and bugs we have been since Morrowind really took off, but at no point have we made a concentrated effort to stop buying it, to stop rewarding them for something we clearly dislike. We, as a generalized group, continually reward developers, journalistic institutions and other gaming-media related groups for doing the worst possible things, and then turn around and try to tell them to stop. Why would they?
#nerdshit#Also all the numbers are completely arbitrary especially when put next to one another#Of course none of this will stop people from sending death threats to a guy because he gave the newest zelda a 9 instead of a 10 or whatevs

How Hideo Kojima and Junji Ito Could Finish What Silent Hills Started
https://ift.tt/2EpTlgx
The collaboration survival horror fans have been waiting for may finally be happening, according to famed mangaka Junji Ito, who confirmed that he’s been talking to video game auteur Hideo Kojima about working together on a new horror project, which has been the subject of much speculation since the release of Death Stranding last year.
Ito shared this tidbit while talking to Viz Media during this weekend’s Comic-Con@Home event (via IGN), where he was asked whether he was currently working on any video game projects.
“So, the simple answer is no,” Ito’s translator Junko Goda told Viz Media. “However, I do know director Kojima and we have been in conversation that he might have a horror-based game that he may be doing, and so he has invited me to work on that, but there are no details on it yet.”
Those who have been following Kojima’s attempts to make a horror game over the years likely know that Ito was previously set to collaborate with the video game auteur and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro on Silent Hills, a new take on the beloved survival horror series starring The Walking Dead and Death Stranding actor Norman Reedus. But the collaboration never got past a few initial meetings and a karaoke session.
“Once the Silent Hills meeting was over, we went to karaoke,” Ito said while speaking at the Toronto Comics Art Festival (via Game Informer) in 2019. “I didn’t hear anything after that. I heard that the plan got scrapped through outside sources. I have seen Kojima and Del Toro since. I never started designing monsters. Nothing exists. There are no roughs or sketches.”
In an interview with IGN about approaching Ito to work on Silent Hills, del Toro called the mangaka “completely one of the masters,” saying that he loved how Ito seemed to “get high on his own supply” while imagining the grotesque monsters, body horror, and extreme violence that are trademarks of the mangaka’s work.
“In the way that you feel Dario Argento in the early movies was getting off on each murder or you feel David Cronenberg was secretly aroused by body horror – in the same way, you feel Junji Ito being titillated at a very basic disturbing level by his stuff,” del Toro said of Ito.
However Silent Hills would have turned out, it does sound like the trio had some interesting new ideas about how to push the survival horror genre forward.
“We had a few working sessions where we were talking about using the console, the next-generation console in a way that would surprise people. Let’s really freak out people. Let’s really cause a panic with Silent Hill. Let’s go for it. Let’s go for full-blown social madness,” del Toro told IGN. “We were planning this stuff. Ito was mainly being nice, making notes. He didn’t sing either. He was a very serious man.”
Unfortunately, when Kojima and publisher Konami had a falling out during the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the game director left the company and Silent Hills was quickly canceled. Konami has done little with the series since (besides making Silent Hill-themed pachinko gambling machines).
It’s a shame this all happened before Ito could even put pencil to paper. I personally would have loved to see what monstrosities Ito’s chats with Kojima and del Toro might have inspired. Fortunately, Kojima and del Toro’s P.T. demo was a stunning proof of concept for what Silent Hills might have looked like. It was also its own experiment in “social madness.”
When P.T. was mysteriously released at Gamescom 2014 by a fake studio, many gamers quickly became obsessed with solving the confounding (and terrifying) demo’s seemingly nonsensical puzzles. Within hours, P.T. had become a viral marketing phenomenon, the subject of countless reaction videos, forum threads, walkthroughs, live streams, and social media posts. Of course, beating the demo revealed P.T.‘s biggest mystery of all: that it was, in fact, a “playable teaser” for Kojima and del Toro’s Silent Hills. Yet, by the time the truth had come out, P.T. itself had morphed into its own unique experience destined to outlive the game it was created to promote.
Much has been written about the making of P.T. and its influence on the horror genre in the years since its release. You can also find plenty of videos dissecting different aspects of the demo, including videos of players, dataminers, and modders trying to figure out how the demo works. Siux years later, certain things about the demo remain a secret, including the meaning of its cyclical narrative.
The demo is a notable example of a game going viral, as players worked together on the internet to solve the puzzles, while word of mouth on social media got others to try the demo. While Kojima explored this idea further in Death Stranding, which has its own social mechanics, del Toro and Kojima originally planned to take all of this one step further with Silent Hills, using “every aspect” of the PS4 to “create a state of widespread social panic,” according to IGN. While I’d stop short of saying it caused widespread panic, P.T. itself did spread like wildfire through internet gaming communities in 2014 like some sort of interactive urban myth or creepypasta. Or a meme.
Fans of the Metal Gear series know Kojima loves to insert metafiction and other metaphysical elements into his work, such as with the Psycho Mantis boss fight in Metal Gear Solid and the final twist in Metal Gear Solid 2, which some believe predicted the pervasive nature of meme culture on the internet as well as how technology could be used for social engineering. Many of Kojima’s games specifically tackle how technology can distort and corrupt reality.
P.T. has its own distortive qualities and can even be considered a major turning point in Kojima’s work undoubtedly influenced by del Toro’s own directorial sense. Some critics have said the demo’s endlessly looping hallway, which players must keep walking through to solve P.T.‘s many puzzles, “practically hypnotizes you into a state of vulnerability.” That sense of vulnerability also comes in part from the hostile ghost that follows closely behind you throughout the experience as well as the disorienting nature of the puzzles that work on a sort of dream logic that’s never explained within the actual game. (There are no tutorials or in-game prompts to be found in P.T.)

Death Stranding’s Norman Reedus Teases New Project with Hideo Kojima
By Matthew Byrd
Kojima told The Japan Times in 2014 that with P.T. he wanted to explore “a more genuine, thoughtful and permeating type of fear” than the violence and gore usually found in AAA survival horror games.
“There are horror action games with zombies and grotesque things and so forth. The real fear isn’t from those things. It’s from standing in an empty place, where just to step forward or to turn around is scary,” Kojima said, explaining that the demo is scary because “there’s no information.”
“Nowadays, when people don’t know something, they Google it. They ask on Twitter or Facebook and they get the answer right away. We live in an age of information. When that suddenly disappears, that’s the scariest thing,” Kojima explained. “That’s why there was no information about who made P.T. There was no purpose or background and no explanation about the story, and that’s frightening. I did this on purpose. That’s why I hid my name and title and just let them play.”
While Kojima has said many times since the release of P.T. that the demo wasn’t actually related to Silent Hills in terms of gameplay or story, it’s impossible not to wonder how the success of the interactive teaser would have influenced Kojima and del Toro’s final product, and how Ito’s own work would have added to the experience.
After all, Ito was a perfect fit for the “social madness” Kojima and del Toro were going for with Silent Hills. In his seminal horror manga books Gyo and Uzumaki in particular, Ito deals with extreme levels of social anxiety and the unbridled chaos that follows.
In Gyo, Japan is plagued by undead fish who crawl out of the sea using spider-like metal legs powered by a “death stench.” Images of bloated victims assimilated into the killer fish army pervade the pages of the book as do images of mass hysteria.
If Gyo is Ito’s own take on the zombie genre, Uzumaki is something far more experimental and disturbing. In Uzumaki, a small Japanese town finds itself under attack by a supernatural curse involving spirals. The book is infused with a heightened sense of paranoia, as characters try to navigate the horrific dream logic that’s not unlike the one found in P.T.
Interestingly enough, Ito was inspired to create Uzumaki in part due to his desire to understand spirals as symbols, as well as an interest in depicting spirals in an unexpected way that would scare Japanese audiences, an approach that sounds like Kojima’s own distortion of gameplay mechanics players normally take for granted.
“The ‘spiral pattern’ is not normally associated with horror fiction. Usually spiral patterns mark character’s cheeks in Japanese comedy cartoons, representing an effect of warmth. However, I thought it could be used in horror if I drew it a different way,” Ito said in an interview with 78 magazine in 2006. “Spirals are one of the popular Japanese patterns from long ago, but I don’t know what the symbol represents. I think spirals might be symbolic of infinity.”
While Ito’s work is full of the violence and gore that Kojima wanted to move away from with P.T., it’s clear that the two creators share similar sensibilities when it comes to finding more primal ways of scaring their audiences. Like Kojima and his use of the suburban hallway, Ito often uses images of things that aren’t traditionally considered scary — like spirals — in order to terrify. Another example is hair.
“Historically, long black hair has been symbolic of Japanese women, and most women value this image. The long hair of a woman is common in Japanese horror because it conveys an enveloping feeling of movement. I think it conjures up fear in people unconsciously,” Ito told 78. It’s in this space between what we know to be scary and what people don’t even know they’re scared of yet that both Ito and Kojima excel. With Kojima now running his own Kojima Productions indie studio where he can decide what he wants to work on and with whom he wants to work with next, his collaboration with Ito might finally come into fruition on their own terms. And their past work certainly points to a match made in hell. If Kojima and Ito do decide to collaborate on a new horror game, one would have to wonder how del Toro might fit into the project. After Silent Hills was canceled and a previous video game project called Insane also fell through, del Toro vowed to never work on a game again during an interview with Playboy (via IGN). That said, del Toro did allow Kojima to use his likeness for a major supporting character in Death Stranding, so perhaps there’s hope the Silent Hills trio could be reunited one day. Until then, our hopes of seeing something akin to what was planned for Silent Hills rest with Kojima and Ito. Perhaps Kojima could even teach Ito a thing or two about video games along the way: “I don’t know anything about games. I don’t play them. I am afraid if I get into them I’ll miss deadlines. I have never played Silent Hill,” Ito revealed at the Toronto Comics Art Festival while ruminating on his relationship with Kojima. “I have known Hideo Kojima for 20 years. He is a nice older brother type.”
