Chapter 906 – Get Out Of Here! | The Problem with Marrying Rich: Out of the Way, Ex
“Dad…” Seeing dad coming out of the bathroom, Xixi quickly put down dudu and ran over to hug dad’s leg. Ye Hao squatted down. He didn’t look very good. Some blood traces could even be seen in his eyes. He seemed like he hasn’t had a good rest in a very long time. “Baby, what’s wrong with you?” Ye Hao pinched his daughter’s little face. Who held the rank of commander-in-chief (da dudu 大都督) historically?
I like to Anglocize the title as Grand Marshal. The use of the title, and the duties/privileges of its holder, varied a lot between Wei, Wu, and Jin; and between different regimes within a dynasty.
In Wei, Sima Zhao took the title in 256 as part of the special honors he received from the emperor. Sima Yan briefly held that title before taking the throne.
Under Jin, Jia Chong held that title during the conquest of Wu. It seems to have been intended to convey military supremacy - a temporary appointment to give him authority over the entire operation.
In Wu, it was an irregular title. Lu Xun first received it during his defense of Yidu (giving him authority over the other generals there) and again during the operations against Cao Xiu in 228. Quan Zong held the title as overall leader of the campaign against Wei in 241. After that, it became a symbol of the regency. Zhuge Ke took the title to reassert his power, and it was held by Sun Jun and Sun Chen. Later, it again became a temporary commission. It was given to Xiu Ze in 268 and Xue Xu in 271; both times because they were leading large expeditions into Jiao and would be out of contact with Sun Hao.
I know of no Shu officers who were given this title.
