Will you protect me from the things that I want?

Hi wanted to ask about Olivia Rodrigo’s career trajectory. Will she have more hit songs and do a bigger tour?
I didn't get much (or really anything) about her future and how well she's going to do going forward here. So much seems to be uncertain with Olivia's camp right now that I feel like it's basically impossible to tell how things will turn out. Maybe I will check back on it in a month or so, but this is what we have right now…
cards: the wheel of fortune rx, two of pentacles rx, page of pentacles rx, ace of wands rx
I see Olivia letting go either of members of her current team or producers she has been working with. She seems to be unhappy with the state of things at the moment. It feels stagnant, the material is outdated, their plans keep being recycled… it all just the same. It's like she has been living the same era for 10 years by now, and she feels like the public is starting to see her as someone who has nothing valuable to give anymore. Like she has exhausted all of her creative resources and potential.
I see her wanting to branch out, try new things, take risks. She feels inspired by a bunch of other artists, specially those that are more indie and/or avant-guard and don't try to necessarily mold themselves to what the industry is looking for. She wants to be more experimental + I think she's considering doing something really shocking that is both fun for her, but also that serves as some sort of release from this never-ending era she has been living for the past few years. Not sure if she is ever going to come out with this "shocking" thing, honestly, but a change is coming anyway. Her new era might also take a little longer to take off because they are figuring things out as they go, or so many plans are scrapped throughout it, that they have to keep finding other little things to fill in the gaps (and those little things are pretty forgettable, so it just feels like nothing is happening at all).
I just thought of Dua Lipa and her most recent era. There was so much potential that went to waste because of her team's bad management + overthinking, 100%(!!!). Olivia must, for sure, be looking at that and trying to avoid making the same mistake. She doesn't want to overthink things, and risk scrapping good material that could really make a major difference in both her career and her confidence as well. The issue is just that I feel like her team is way too controlling and often doesn't want to think outside the box. So if we still get Purple Angsty Olivia Rodrigo 3.0 next instead of something completely different, you all know it was her team forcing it out for "marketability"…
(Disclaimer: All is alleged and for entertainment purposes only. Based on current energies.)

4, 11, and 13 for the latest fanfic q&a!! I haven't read the many names of one very special clone boy yet but I am SO EXCITED TO START IT AFTER WORK TODAY!!!
-@bibatboy
!!!! I really hope you like it! I haven't had much time to work on the next chapter yet, but I'm gonna get it outlined today. It requires much more homework studying the source material than originally anticipated lol.
Answers in regard to my latest fic Thermogenesis
4. What’s the most challenging part about posting new/updated work? Do you find posting stressful or invigorating?
Posting is the fun part for me! I love getting to see the fruits of my labors finally pay off. The hard part is getting a fic to the point where I really feel like it's finished. That, and having to pick tags, write A/Ns, etc.
11. What songs best capture the aesthetic of this work? Did you listen to this song while writing?
I don't usually listen to music when I write, at least not as anything other than white noise, but I think Physical by Dua Lipa is a big vibe for this fic.
13. Are there any cut lines/scenes from this work? Why did you cut them?
There aren't lines or scenes I ended up cutting from this, so in leiu of that, I offer you a sample from the next installment in the series.
Their first date had been a rooftop picnic. It was actually supposed to be an outdoor concert at Robinson park, but that had gotten scrapped because, well - it was Gotham. Then they’d rescheduled for a lovely visit to the aquarium, which also got a raincheck because, once again, Gotham. At that point, Tim figured they’d just have to pencil something in for the next calendar year. But then Jason - smart, sweet, impatient Jason - had tracked him down on the tail end of patrol, sat him down several stories above 9th St., procured a basket full of breakfast foods and a thermos of fresh coffee, and said into his comm, “If anyone even thinks about interrupting in the next hour, I will personally fill all of your shoes with peanut butter.” They watched the sunrise while exchanging bites of chocolate croissant and it was the best date Tim had ever been on in his life. On their second date, Jason picked Tim up on his motorcycle and drove them to the Gotham History Museum where he let Tim curl a hand around his elbow and regurgitate all the Mesopotamian fun facts he’d learned in his childhood as they strolled through the gallery. It was tied for the best date he had ever been on in his life. And after Jason drove him back to his apartment, he laid a hand soft against Tim’s jaw and pressed a kiss featherlight to his mouth before fleeing the scene. But he couldn’t get his helmet on fast enough to keep Tim from seeing the adorable blush on his cheeks. The third date had been a slightly more traditional dinner and a movie, except instead of a movie it was a drag show on the east end that had Tim laughing until he wheezed, and for dinner Jason led him down the sketchiest alley he’d ever seen in his life (and Tim had seen a lot of sketchy alleys) to a hole-in-the-wall Filipino restaurant where he gorged himself on the best lumpia ever. And when a mugger stepped out of the shadows during their exit, Tim held Jason’s cup of halo-halo while he disarmed the guy. Jason held out the newly acquired knife as a joking gift to Tim. That knife sat in a box in his closet next to the visitor’s map from the museum and his ticket stub from the drag show. Jason walked Tim home after that and - because it was the third date after all - followed him inside and fucked him into the mattress until he saw stars.
Thanks for the ask!! <3 <3

Can’t talk about it, won’t talk about it

Either Normani really doesn’t want to do music anymore or she’s just being sabotaged and held back. It’s crazy that she had the opportunity to release Pick Up Your Feelings then her team turned it down and it was given to Jazmine Sullivan and then the song won a Grammy, she had the opportunity to have a collab with Dua Lipa but again her team rejected it and Dua went on to release it as a solo and it did great in numbers, then lastly she had to opportunity to be on RAYE’S album but AGAIN her team rejected it so it got scrapped and now RAYE is doing pretty well and her song is slowly rising on Billboard Hot 100…. I remember when she did that collaboration Dancing with a stranger with Sam Smith and it did really well on the charts and there was even footage of her rehearsing for the Billboard Music Awards and then her performance with Sam got scrapped because apparently Sam was sick with a throat injury but yet they were seen out partying and screaming a day after they were supposed to perform at the award show…..Normani’s career trajectory is so????
It’s def someone from her team or someone inside her label that is blocking her from releasing. She has probably made two different albums at this point and for whatever reason they’re not letting her release it.

How do you feel about Camila Cabello and Ed Sheeran‘s new song? there’s a rumor that she supposedly had a collaboration with Megan thee stallion but they scrapped it instead. I wonder if it was Megan‘s team to actually scrap the collaboration because it’s very apparent that her fans don’t really like Camila Cabello plus with the Dua Lipa collaboration coming out it only makes sense to not put out a collab with camila.
It’s boring and bland

Unreleased songs - ɟ
Hi, babies 👋🏼. Long time no see 😂 As I said I would, ta-daah!
So, honeys, today’s topic is about unreleased songs as the title of the post suggests, but that’s not what you think. Let me explain. For years I’ve been investigating the world of celebrities, the world of Hollywood, and the more time passes, the more things I’m able to discover, even if ‘slowly’ because I work. As I mentioned in the ‘Award shows’ post, thanks to the time I still have for a while because I’m on vacation for a few more days, I finally had time to find out some information about ‘who?’, ‘how?’, and ‘why?’ we’re getting blessed with so many unreleased songs. I haven’t found an answer to everything yet, but I’m working on it. For now, I’ll tell you what I know and my theories. If any of you know anything more, please, PLEASE DM me: @fa-by.
Let’s go in order. ‘Who?’:
I think that like me, many of you have always wondered ‘Who’s leaking all these songs? Is it a hacker? Is it the artist’s management? Is it the artist themself?’. The answer to these questions is unfortunately still only what I think. For me, it’s the artist’s label. Labels are usually the ones that own the master recording copyrights. [If you want to know more about the subject, I wrote a post about it: ‘How the music world works’. If you’re interested, Mari did this very cool thing for me. All you have to do is click on the #f anon on her blog to see all my posts (I know I sounded like a grandma, but I said it’s cool because I didn’t know it could be done. I’m pretty good with tech in general, but I’m still pretty new to the Tumblr world, okay? Don’t make fun of me 🤓🤣)]
As I also explained in that post, a recording agreement states that the label becomes the owner of all the master recordings recorded by the artist during the period of the agreement. And yes, this also includes unreleased recordings. And that’s why I’m very convinced that it’s the label. Labels are at the tip of the pyramid, and they are the ones who make every decision about their artists. Managements, agents, publicists, etc., only execute directives. So I think they’re the ones leaking those songs through their own IT departments.
It also depends on the cases and why, but sometimes instead, they even paid someone outside, hackers or ordinary people, to do it. The same methods they used to ‘hack’ and spread even false personal data and information about their artists. The reasons vary of course. They may have leaked a song because their artist hadn’t released something in a while and to keep fans engaged. They may have done it to see the fans’ response to that genre of song and if they’ve vibed with it to be able to choose the kind of direction for their artist to take for the new album and next single. They may have done so with a song they knew they were going to officially release just to get more attention on the song itself (example: ‘Love Incredible’ and ‘First Man’). They may have done it simply for publicity and to get people talking about their artist. Really, they may have done so for all sorts of reasons.
This, however, happened mostly in the past. Now, based on what I’ve discovered, I’ve realized that there’s also another reason why they do it. And this reason, leads us to the next question: ‘How?’
I’ve already anticipated how they did in the past and sometimes still do. By using their IT departments or by paying someone outside to do it for them. But I haven’t yet explained how they do it now, which leads to my discovery.
*Little story for you first*🙃 (#donthateme)
I was simply scrolling to see what new music was released and if there was any interesting news. The typical “I was minding my own business when”, you know? Well, that’s how I came across ‘Party Animal’.
I can literally picture you saying to me: “But, Faby, Party Animal is an old song!”. Yes, it is. Party Animal is a 2017 song sung by Charly Black & Luis Fonsi. But did you know that a remix with Camila on it should have been released and that it got scrapped?? 🤯🤯🤯🤯 That’s what I came across! In the snippet to be more precise. I knew the remix existed [I also talked about it in one of my last posts to reply to an Anon], but I’d never listened to its snippet, so imagine my surprise when I found it in front of me out of nowhere! And they even created a mashup between her snippet and the original song to see how the remix would’ve turned out to be. I’m gonna put a piece of the mashup with Camila’s snippet at the end of the post for you to listen to.
Party Animal brought me to the snippets of ‘It’s Only Natural’ ft. Skrillex, the original demo of ‘Sangria Wine’ which together with Pharrell, was initially also supposed to have J Balvin and Young Thug on it, ‘Pretending’ by Lauren, and many others that I didn’t yet know existed, including those I knew about and that I listened to again, like for example the first version of ‘Havana’, that is the first real original demo with Starrah, or ‘Who Can I Run To’ by 5H, or ‘If It Ain’t Me’ by Dua Lipa ft. Normani (leaked unreleased song, recorded for Dua’s Future Nostalgia album), etc., etc.
What happened then? Thanks to those snippets and to the re-listening of all the ones I already knew, I resumed investigating as I’d already started doing this summer, and I finally discovered this:
*end of the little story*
There are sites. Hackers sites that sell these songs. Yes, you read that correctly. SELL. These sites sell unreleased and exclusive music from any artist. From top A singers to less famous and unknown singers. Anyone can register and anyone can buy the songs. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, if you’re lucky enough to have A LOT of money to throw around, then those sites are for you. These sites are not cheap. Some of them charge you money even when you just register.
Do you want examples to better understand? Okay, let’s talk about our Camren.
Remember when I submitted the post with Lauren’s ‘Inside’ studio version on December 17th? Remember how many of you felt guilty to listen to it even though you were happy to do it and even though I told you that Lauren herself said it wouldn’t be on the album? Well, do you wanna know the real reason we got this leaked? Because a Camila fan BOUGHT it from one of those websites and released it as a ‘Christmas gift’ for all of us!
Do you know how on July 21 we had ‘Curious’, ‘Cleopatra’, and ‘Unforgettable’? How on August 22 we had ‘Just Like You’ ft. Jack Ü? How on September 3 we had ‘Come When I Call’ ft. Pharrell Williams, ‘Taxi’, and ‘Eyes on You’? And how the next day, the 4th, we had ‘Terrified’? The only reason we’ve been blessed with all of these unreleased songs by Camila, is because people BOUGHT them from those sites exactly as it happened with Inside!
We’re about to be fed with a lot more, guys. You see, this is another thing I discovered. These websites [I only know of four at the moment, and honestly? It was pretty easy to find them, so it won’t be a problem for you either. But please, please, please guys, don’t ask me to tell you the sites here publicly because I won’t. I don’t want any problems.], these hackers, sometimes release snippets for free to spark buyer interest. These snippets then end up on the internet, and that’s how we ‘mere mortals’ also learn about the existence and titles of songs discarded from albums. But most of the time, even the snippets have to be bought because they’re about highly desired songs. This happens because, for example, maybe an artist has mentioned them in an interview and therefore fans want them.
I’ll give you a practical example. Remember when Camila talked about The Boy? We obviously all freaked out because not only was it a song written by Ed Sheeran that she rewrote almost completely, but mostly because we WANTED and WANT to hear it. Same thing that happened with God Is a Woman. So what did the hackers do? They put the snippets up for sale because they were both very requested songs. Once the snippets were sold and spread well, they put the songs up for sale in full. And do you wanna know how much The Boy is on sale? $3,000 on one unreleased selling site, and $3,500 on another one [Prices I read from the comments of some accounts that are registered on those sites]. I wasn’t kidding when I said they aren’t cheap… Although there are songs that cost less, such as ‘Thinkin Bout One’ (song discarded from the album ‘Camila’) which is currently on sale for $300. Still waaay too much and pretty over the top for my ass.
If you happen to see snippets of Camren’s unreleased songs or 5H’s around, it’s only thanks and because these websites are selling them. Unfortunately, there’s no possibility of having them in full unless someone pays for them first.
And all this leads us to the last question: ‘Why?’
Why? Very simple answer: for money. As I said I explained in my ‘How the music world works’ post [and I’m truly sorry to bring this up again, but it really makes sense with what I’m saying and if you don’t understand what I’m talking about now, then I suggest you go read that first and then come back here], labels buy some songs for the album from authors and ghostwriters, and invest on the artist by giving them an advance to make that album. This advance is mainly reserved to pay for the recording of the album, and this means paying for the recording costs, which includes the payment of A LOT of other things that I explained there. What interests us in this case, is that the recording costs also include all those songs that were later discarded from an album.
The labels paid to have the artist do those songs, and since they weren’t released, they didn’t make any money off those songs. Neither the labels nor the artists who recorded them. Or rather, the labels have certainly regained the money invested to make them thanks to the recoupment of the recording costs. Either immediately, or in any case later thanks to cross-collateralization. But the artist? They just lost money, and they both earned no royalties or licenses precisely because those songs were never released.
So what did they come up with to make money on those songs too? They put them up for sale. Theory’s time: In my opinion, labels use hackers because they know how not to be tracked. Think about it.
I’ll give you an example. If you were to create a site, would you know how to protect it? Would you know what data is coming in and out of your website? Would you know which functions are constantly running and which are not? Would you know which programs transmit data externally and which ones don’t? Would you know which programs are suspicious? Would you know to create alternative algorithms, security plugins, and serious firewalls that prevent unauthorized access? I could go on all day, but if your answer is no, then I guess you get my point.
They use external hackers. People outside their IT departments in such a way as not to create any kind of connection between them. They use them as they would use publishers, distributors, and collection agencies with an officially released song all at once. It’s a give-and-take. The hackers take the necessary security measures and create the sites, the labels pass the unreleased songs to them, and the hackers put them up for sale. Once sold, the hackers get their share and the labels get the biggest percentage. It’s actually brilliant if you think about it.
Now let’s move on to the last small part of this post.
Do the artists know that their unreleased songs are for sale? I think they really do. And I’ll tell you more. I think they have deals with their own label to get their share of sales as well. I believe that they’re also themselves (with label approval of course) who choose which one to put up for sale and which one to keep to use in the future, whether it’s for an album or simply to take and use part of the lyrics from that song for a new one.
And then, think about it for a moment. Do you really believe that if someone else had ‘stolen’ them and put them up for sale, the labels wouldn’t have noticed? That they wouldn’t immediately have shut down their sites and take action since it’s not a single song? And I’m also talking about legal measures that they would have taken together with the authors of those songs since they, the labels, are the owners of the master recording copyrights, and the authors are the owners of the composition copyrights. Come on, my friends. Do you have any idea how powerful major labels are? But anyway.
Do I think we have a problem? Do I think all of this could lead to problems for the girls for their future sales? Nope. I honestly think this is just more publicity for them. I think thanks to these songs, people/fans can even more and really see how talented they are, especially in lyrics. Lauren for example, who still hasn’t graced us with her album. These songs are like appetizers while waiting for the main course: LJ1.
And now I’m really done 😄 I remind you that all these unreleased songs for sale are scraps of their albums, scraps of remixes and collaborations, and scraps in general, so they’re not really harming them by selling them. Don’t let yourself get unnecessary heart attacks, please🤣
If you have any questions, as usual, all you have to do is ask. I send you lots of love with virtual hugs 🤗 Stay safe. Stay patient. Be kind to yourself and others. I love you, babies. As usual, always with love, F ❤️
As promised, this is the mashup piece with Camila’s snippet:
Still here, hi 👋🏼😊 aaand super bonus for you just because I love you. I know this is gonna literally make you scream, jump, cry, and I mean, it will literally get you out of your minds exactly as it did to me. I present to you a demo of No Way (my second favorite 5H song) ONLY SUNG BY CAMREN!!!!!! It’s only 42 seconds, and the only difference is actually Camila who sings also Normani’s part before hers, but JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, it’s heavenly 😻😍 Thank me later and for now, just enjoy, my children, just enjoy:
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

You headed of straight into the sunset with all your devotion,

She talked about writing heartbreak songs while she was dating Niall but I’m pretty sure most of her old songs were dumped. She’s with Dua Lipa’s management now and they are trying to change up her image and make the music more interesting. She’s been using more of Dua’s producers etc.
yeah i figured since she never released anything she was working on before, that it was all scrapped.

Lymond playlist
Because this is my life now
Link here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX1j0sgNhs4&list=PLTcxkqgFNIFFfR0CQnR2woOkTM0TKdBd5
Index and annotations below the cut
So this is organized with roughly 3 songs per book.
Game of Kings:
Garbage, Cherry Lips (about Lymond, obviously)
She gave you everything she had But she was young and dumb She'd just turned twenty-one She didn't care to hang around So when the shit came down Why she was nowhere to be found
You hold a candle in your heart You shine the light on hidden parts You make the whole world want to dance You bought yourself a second chance
Johnny Cash, God's gonna cut you down (justice comes for a few people in book one...)
You can run on for a long time Run on for a long time Run on for a long time Sooner or later God'll cut you down Sooner or later God'll cut you down Well, you may throw your rock and hide your hand Workin' in the dark against your fellow man But as sure as God made black and white What's down in the dark will be brought to the light
Celtic Woman, The Voice (IDEK...I just like this song, and wanted to find a place for it. The fixation on national spirit and history might actually fit better with Oonagh. But I think GoK does have kind of a theme of history following cycles, and wheels of luck, sacrifice for a nation, and so on)
I am the voice in the wind and the pouring rain I am the voice of your hunger and pain I am the voice that always is calling you I am the voice, I will remain... I am the voice of the past that will always be Filled with my sorrow and blood in my fields I am the voice of the future Bring me your peace Bring me your peace and my wounds, they will heal
Queens Play
Gaelic Storm, Johnny Tarr -- (This is totally about Thady Boy-- a fictional narrative about a fictional Irish stereotype)
Lemme tell you a little story about a man named Johnny Tarr He was a hard drinking son of a preacher, always at the bar Lager from the tap or shots of Paddy from the shelf He could open his throttle and throw back a bottle as quick as the devil himself ... Johnny Tarr! ... Even if you say it yourself, you wouldn't believe, And I wouldn't trust a person like me, if I were you I wasn't there, I swear I have an alibi I heard it from a man who knows a fella who says it's true!
Dua Lipa, New Rules-- (Poor Robin Stewart. Though this could also work for Jerrott, and many other characters in Lymond’s orbit).
One, don't pick up the phone You know he's only calling 'cause he's drunk and alone Two, don't let him in You'll have to kick him out again Three, don't be his friend You know you're gonna wake up in his bed in the morning And if you're under him You ain't getting over him
Ladytron, Destroy Everything you Touch (Lymond, obviously. You know the quote I’m thinking of.)
You only have to look behind you At who's underlined you Destroy everything you touch today Destroy me this way Everything you touch you don't feel Do not know what you steal
The Disorderly Knights
Broken Bells, The Ghost Inside (Oonagh. Watch the music video...the lyrics aren’t super literal, but I think this song is very appropriate for her)
Just like a whiskey bottle drained on the floor She got no future, just a life to endure This good samaritan is shaking her hand Too late to leave here now, the songs in the can
Nickelback, How You Remind Me (So this is down as my Gabriel song. On paper, really sweet and catchy, but then you start to wonder if something so straightforward might be a little...fake)
This is how you remind me Of what I really am It's not like you to say sorry I was waiting on a different story This time I'm mistaken For handing you A heart worth breaking
Lorde, Loveless (JOLETA. This is normally part two of a two part song, but THIS PART IS JOLETA
Bet you wanna rip my heart out Bet you wanna skip my calls now Well guess what? I like that ‘Cause I’m gonna mess your life up Gonna wanna tape my mouth shut Look out, lovers
Pawn in Frankincense
Moby, Lift Me Up (I don’t have much justification for this song, other than that I like it, and wanted more male artists, and it kind of felt right here)
Plain talking (plain talking) Making us bold (making us bold) So strung out and cold (strung out and cold) Feeling so old (feeling so old)
Halsey, Gasoline (This song is for both Lymond AND Marthe. Favorite song in this playlist. The entire playlist could really just be this song, over and over again. I could write a whole essay connecting this song to the plot of PoF)
Are you insane like me? Been in pain like me? Bought a hundred dollar bottle of champagne like me? Just to pour that motherfucker down the drain like me?... Do the people whisper 'bout you on the train like me? Saying that you shouldn't waste your pretty face like me?... Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline I think there's a flaw in my code These voices won't leave me alone Well my heart is gold and my hands are cold
Beats Antique, Rising Tide (Philippa, to some extent. I was a little tempted to use this song in GoK for Christian Stewart, instead, swapping it with the Johnny Cash, but the beginning of the playlist was already dominated by female vocalists. And I think it kind of does work for Philippa at the end of PoF, going back home to her old life, leaving behind these bizarre and horrible experiences, she’s changed and Flaws Valley is still the same.)
You're an ocean of a girl Surrounding a world with a blackening tide You know that the coming storm is going to be a crazy ride With your alters made of bones The aftermath of disposable wings... I would write you a song that sounds like A faded photograph of your favorite night Just a little something to remember me by
The Ringed Castle
Alice Merton, No Roots (This doesn’t need much explanation)
I like digging holes and hiding things inside them When I'll grow old, I hope I won't forget to find them 'Cause I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night I build a home and wait for someone to tear it down Then pack it up in boxes, head for the next town running... And a thousand times I've seen this road A thousand times I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground
Barns Courtney, Glitter and Gold (again, doesn’t need much explanation...)
Do you walk in the valley of kings? Do you walk in the shadow of men Who sold their lives to a dream? Do you ponder the manner of things In the dark The dark, the dark, the dark
Guster, Fa Fa (Ringed Castle just speaks for itself, doesn’t it)
Go and run through the hallways, and find your way to the door You will end up like always, back where you were before Can you look in the mirror, wish you were somebody else But it's still your reflection, you and no one else You were always saying something, you swear you'd never say again
Checkmate
Elefant, Misfit (Lymond and Philippa, to some extent. Also I like the song.)
Tell me your name, tell me your story Cause I'm into it, runnin' through life like a misfit
Sia, Alive (this whole song...)
I had a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go Where the wind don't change And nothing in the ground can ever grow No hope, just lies And you're taught to cry into your pillow But I survived
Garbage, When I grow up (could have also fit in the GoK section)
When I grow up I'll be stable When I grow up I'll turn the tables... Don't take offense Better make amends Rip it all to shreds and let it go
Additional songs I thought of, but scrapped:
Game of Kings Bad Reputation, Joan Jett I don't give a damn 'Bout my reputation I've never been afraid of any deviation An' I don't really care If ya think I'm strange I ain't gonna change
Joanna Newsom, The Things I Say If I have the space of half a day I'm ashamed of half the things I say I'm ashamed to have turned out this way And I desire to make amends But it don't make no difference, now And no one's listening, anyhow And lists of sins and solemn vows Don't make you any friends There's an old trick played When the light and the wine conspire To make me think I'm fine I'm not, but I have got half a mind To maybe get there, yet
America, Sandman (for Jerrott, or Richard) Ain't it foggy outside All the planes have been grounded Ain't the fire inside? Let's all go stand around it Funny, I've been there And you've been here And we ain't had no time to drink that beer 'Cause I understand you've been running from the man... Ain't the years gone by fast I suppose you have missed them Oh, I almost forgot to ask Did you hear of my enlistment? Funny, I've been there And you've been here And we ain't had no time to drink that beer
Queens play Blink 182 What's my age again "And that's about the time she walked away from me, no one likes you when you're twenty-three..."
Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas, Picture me with you (the bisexual anthem, lol) "I've been sleeping with your girlfriend. I' ve been sleeping in her bed. Don't picture me dead Picture me with you... I've been sleeping with your boyfriend. I' ve been sleeping in his bed. Don't picture me dead Picture me with you..."
Ringed Castle Joanna Newsom, Good Intentions Paving Company "Twenty miles left to the show Hello, my old country, Hello Stars are just beginning to appear And I have never, in my life Before been here"
Checkmate Metric, Satellite Mind "Hold it I'm about to drop off Let me tell you my last thought Drift into a deep fog Lost where I forgot to hold it I can feel you most when I'm alone"
Joanna Newsom, Leaving the City "I believe in you Do you believe in me? What do you want to do? Are we leaving the city? On the black road Through the gold fields While the fiends are plowed Towards what we are allowed"
#Lymond#the lymond chronicles#dorothy dunnett#I'm going to regret posting this because I'll think of fifty more songs that belong here#Do any of you have any recommendations for songs that would fit with one or more of the books or characters?#or lyrics or poetry#talk lymond chronicles to me!

Progress on the Untitled Loki Fic & Song Rec Request
I finally found some direction (i.e. plot other than Loki flirting with a woman who is suspicious of his motives) on my fic. It only took me 30,000 words. I must say, the challenge of making Loki sweet to this chick without losing his character has been strangely fun. Their relationship definitely has some bite to it. Hopefully it will be just as enjoyable to read when I get this finished and posted. Writing has been slow-going because of the onset of tax season and the volatile stock markets, but I’m hopeful I can get the lion’s share of this piece finished by the end of the month so I can spend the first bit of March finishing it up and cleaning it up. Maybe in 3-4 weeks, ya’ll!
On a related note--I’m looking for songs that are perfect for a night time drive. This request does tie back into the fic, but I don’t want to elaborate right now in case I decide to scrap the idea or change it up. If you were to jump in your car and hit the gas after the sun has set, what would you be listening to? Tellllll me.
Not necessarily a nighttime driving song, but Dua Lipa’s cover of the Arctic Monkeys’ Do I Wanna Know is gorgeous and giving me so much writing inspiration.

Best of 2020
Bruce Springsteen – “If I Was the Priest” Lauded as a return to form for the Boss (I found the album…middling?), this is the standout track on Letter to You. Written in the early seventies and first recorded this year, the track is a perfect slice of Springsteen pomp. A soaring Marian Devotional that recasts the Holy Family as prostitutes, saloon proprietors, and cowboys, it’s grandiose, kind of stupid, and perfectly Springsteen.
Cardi B (ft. Megan Thee Stallion) – “WAP” When I first heard it, I was wandering through one of those endless early quarantine days that have all blended together. It made me laugh, and since I’ve listened to it at least 20 times. Really grateful for Cardi B! LYRIC OF THE YEAR 1: “I want you to park that Big Mack Truck right in this little garage”
Colter Wall – “Big Iron” I spent the latter half of the year reading and thinking about American Westerns. This Marty Robbins cover is a delight. Wall has a remarkable voice, deep and tonal. The sparse instrumentation sets the table perfectly for the confrontation between the Arizona Ranger and the dastardly Texas Red.
Dogleg – “Kawasaki Backflip” The virus turned the volume down on everything and stretched it out. It’s a small and personal unfairness I wasn’t able to see this band shred through this spectacular song in some shitty hot venue while drunk on too expensive beer.
Doja Cat (ft. Nicki Minaj) – “Say So” So, this was a TikTok meme, right? I thought TikTok would fill the Vine-sized hole in my life (RIP, Vine, the only good social media); alas, it wasn’t to be, as it seems to be a platform built exclusively to encourage mediocre young white men to be mediocre-er. I digress; this song is fucking great. Built on the Niles Rodgers-esque disco guitar riff, the addition of a typically professional Minaj elevates this from confection to classic.
Dua Lipa – “Levitating” The lyrics are asinine (see: “My sugarboo/I’m levitating/The Milky Way is liberating/Yeah yeah yeah”). Pop music doesn’t have to have lyrics this dumb (see: above Cardi B re: the garage), but alas. It’s a shame, because the rest of this package is so slick, a pop fan’s wet dream of talent, groove, and Top 40 danceability.
Fiona Apple – “Shameika” The word genius is probably thrown around to liberally, but 2020 marked a moment when the culture seemed to coalesce to bestow the honorarium on Apple. And why not? She’s released five albums, all of them at least great. She’s a singular voice, making scabrous, confident, off-putting, kinda fucked up music (who among us didn’t hear her wail, “You raped me in the same bed your daughter was born in” and not, like, gulp and say out loud to no one, “yikes!”). Despite the traumatic subject matter, the songs are a fucking auditory pleasure. When we were all cooped up this year, Apple’s claustrophobia was a balm.
illuminati hotties – “content//bedtime” In 2019, I had the pleasure of seeing IH open for pup at the Old National Center. After their set, I was on my way to the baño¸ and noticed IH front person Sarah Tudzin at the merch table. I approached, expressed my admiration for her work, and inquired as to the release of the next album. The reception was chilly! It turns out that Tudzin was fighting her label, ultimately leading to the release of FREE I.H.: This is Not the One You’ve Been Waiting For, a weird little record made for the express purpose of getting out of her contract. It’s still a good album! And this song is a wacky Oingo Bingo-y banger. LYRIC OF THE YEAR 2: “Woah-oh-oh-oh/No-oh-oh-oh/Pouring a bowl of Illuminati hot-o's.”
Jeff Rosenstock – “***BNB” It took me a minute, but once I released it was a song about a mother secretly renting out her adult daughter’s room as an AIRBNB, I was smitten. It eventually turns into an extremely Rosenstockian loud meditation on the difficulty/anxiety/sadness of travel which is good and kick ass.
Jessie Ware – “Remember Where You Are” It’s fucking annoying as shit that the year disco came back (see: Cat, Doja; Lipa, Dua; Genius, Perfume) that we were all stuck in our fucking houses with our fucking cat who is 85% sweet and 15% annoying and 100% smelly god I love her.
The Killers (ft. k.d. lang) – “Lightning Fields” This is probably not the best song on this album (gotta be “Caution”, right?), but it is the stupidest which probably makes it the most Killers-y track of the year. It was somewhere around uttering the question, “are we human/are we dancer” that the Nevada-based boys decided to start fucking around non-stop. This song carries on that proud tradition. The metaphors are incomprehensible, it sounds kinda like “Like a Prayer” at the end, and has a friggin’ great k.d. lang guest spot. It’s so fucking dumb.
Megan Thee Stallion (ft. Beyoncé) – “Savage Remix” This is basically a Beyoncé (just discovered Word will autocorrect Beyonce to Beyoncé. Good job, Bill Gates) song, and it’s wonderful! That part when she goes from whisper singing to full Beyoncé-voice singing at the three-minute mark? The best!
NOBRO – “Marianna” A perfect rock song. The last minute is the best minute of music in 2020 and it’s like, 40% of the song.
Origami Angel – “24 Hr Delivery/KD MVP” For whatever reason, this emo revival duo released an EP of songs using Minecraft samples. Ostensibly a remake of their 2019 twee-bullshit ode to making your sad friend feel better by taking them out to get fast food, the song segues into a completely baffling yet moving sound collage featuring sad piano, cheese guitar, and Kevin Durant’s tearful NBA MVP speech. I don’t claim to understand it, but the heart wants what it wants. A slam dunk!
Orville Peck – “Fancy” My wife won’t let me listen to this Reba McIntyre cover in the house because it makes her cry every time. We’ve learned a lot about each other this year.
Perfume Genius – “On the Floor” A sumptuous slinker. Plausibly the best song about dancing on your own since Robyn’s classic, “Dancing on My Own,” it’s an emotional powerhouse. Have I sang this song while crying in the shower? No. Would I? You bet! LYRIC OF THE YEAR 3: “I cross out his name on the page!”
Phoebe Bridgers – “Savior Complex (Copycat Killer Version),” “I Know the End” 2020 fucking sucked. I couldn’t go outside. I couldn’t see my pals. I got stuck in my loft for ten days with a COVID scare. My life shrank and it became too easy to doom scroll all the shitty news of mass death, the senseless murder of unarmed black people, riots, curfews, the fucking election, and then the chaser of a bunch of white supremacists trying to overturn a free and fair election because they can’t believe a majority of Americans are tired of being run by a big wet racist moron.
I’m not saying that Bridgers had anything to say this year about The World, but when I felt the worst I put on Punisher. It didn’t make me feel better, but it didn’t make me feel worse. It’s the sadgirl album for the sadgirl year. ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Punisher.
Rilo Kiley – “Teenage Lovesong” Rescued from the scrap heap of history, Rilo Kiley re-released their self-titled debut that was originally only available at their live shows. It’s a precocious record (there’s some, like, turntable scratching on one song???), but it’s astonishing how fully formed Jenny Lewis’s voice is even in 1999. That instrument is on display in this old fashioned twanger, where Lewis shows off the tone, clarity, and range.
Run the Jewels – “ooh la la” Listened to this song very loud in a rental Mustang driving from Joshua Tree to Vegas in January. It was cool.
Sturgill Simpson – “Just Let Go” Ol’ Sturg decided that 2020 was the year to become a bluegrass boy and you’ll hear no complainin’ from Ol’ Johnny. This reworking of his 2014 transcendental ode to the “universal shared consciousness,” becomes a good hearted bluegrass ditty brimming with existential joy.

About “Sugar”
For Ginger, Brockhampton frontman Kevin Abstract wanted to let things flow organically and allow the guys' hearts to speak. This song takes the listener through a litany of different feelings including being there for their partner, wanting them by their side, confusion and slow heartbreak.
The song features vocal performances from four of the six vocal members of Brockhampton: Dom McLennon, Matt Champion, Bearface and Kevin Abstract. California singer-songwriter Ryan Beatty also guests on the chorus. He previously accompanied the hip-hop boy band on the June 20, 2018 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Brockhampton released a remix featuring pop singers Dua Lipa and Jon B on March 6, 2020. Bearface and Joba recorded an alternate intro and outro for this new version, but Dom McLennon's verse is removed. Matt Champion's original verse is also scrapped, but he re-emerges with a new set of lyrics.
