2023 musings 🤍

on march 1st, i published my first work of the year (little miss down the line extra inning 10! back in the olden days when they were still the drabbles!). between then and december 28th, 488,045 words and five different universes became a part of my little writing family. 3 new fics, 7 dtl innings, and 1 write this down vault chapter.

(you may be wondering when i sleep. the answer is never).

over those 302 days, i ventured into 3 new universes and met characters who now hold a piece of my soul. in the name of being honest, it’s fine to fake it ‘til you make it (‘til it’s true), and and now i date cate’s brother are timestamps of this chapter in my life. i’m filled with so much pride thinking about them and i’m so happy they became a part of me this year. writing them was this year’s best adventure

i’m also filled with pride when thinking about the way you all have not only embraced the three newbies, but down the line and write this down and their respective “vault” chapters as well. just… have i told you how much fun i’ve had this year? i’m having SO much fun and i’m still a little gobsmacked every day that there are people who want to read these stories. like??? what???

i call my fics my children (they are. i MADE them!!) and in some ways, they still feel like my little secrets, even though they aren’t and i’m so happy they aren’t, because this year brought me not only new readers, but new friends who have made my life unequivocally better. i love, love, love this little community we’ve built, and im so grateful everyday for it. thank you, thank you, thank you. THANK YOU.

Basically I was like "yknow who Lancer reminds me of. Bowser Jr" and then realized that Bowser would TOTALLY emotionally adopt Lancer after learning Spade King is a sucky dad. Anyway Lance and Jr love going around causing problems together, Jr gets to try out Lance's bike and Lance gets a ride in the Koopa Clown car. They (and sometimes Susie) like to prank Mario and friends a lot and I just think they would be such good friends = It was your average day in Hometown, Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser Junior, who wanted to practice wreaking havoc, showed up to ruin just that. He crashed into Hometown riding his clown car, causing trouble through town as he went. Bored, he broke into the school while class was in session, and there he noticed something strange about the storage closet at the end of the hall. ~ "Huh… is this a warp zone? I bet it goes somewhere super cool…" Unable to resist temptation, Junior opened the door and stepped inside, only to fall right through the floor- and that was how Junior found Castle Town. = Lancer, meanwhile, was languishing in his boredom. Sure, the jack of spades had ways of entertaining himself, but he wanted to do them with Susie, who was still in school. "How long is this going to TAKE?!" he would shout, every time his splat noises compilation ended and Susie still wasn't there yet. ~ "HEY!" = Lancer sat up and looked down to see a kid who looked like a turtle. Or was that a turtle who looked like a kid? Whatever it was, it was pointing at him. ~ "What is this place?!" Junior demanded, glaring as threateningly as he could at the other kid (which wasn't very threatening at all, even though he didn't realize that). "Castle Town! Are you a Lightner?!" Lancer was thrilled. Something was happening! He didn't have to be bored anymore! ~ Junior had no idea what a Lightner was, but to him it sounded like an insult. "No, I'm a prince! The first son of the GREAT and EVIL King Bowser!!! So don't mess with me, unless you want me and my papa to gang up on you!" ! "You're an evil prince with an eviler dad? I'M an evil prince with an eviler dad!!!" ~ >:0 "No way! Do you wanna go be evil together?!" "Heck yeah!!!" = That was how it started. The pair of prankster princes exchanged names and high fives, running off into Castle Town to carry out their improvised evil plots. Ralsei would be in for a surprise.

Team Green Boys:

In the DTLS au, they are best friends: Louie, with his desire to lay around watching TV instead of going on adventures, proved a perfect match for Oscar, who has a lot of feelings about being made a budding wizard against his will. Also, Louie sympathizes with Oscar about how embarrassing Ozpin and Ozma are as parents, and Oscar gives Louie someone who expects nothing out of him. Until they end up looping their way back into their own adventure by trying to find the truth about Roman Torchwick, that is. When you're a Duck or the current twinned soul of an immortal wizard going through a lengthy divorce, you don't get to decide not to adventure. Adventure happens to you whether you like it or not.

ducktales for the reverse unpopular opinion thing!!

AUGH despite all my grief about the finale, I really think DT17 is such a good example of how to do a reboot properly. Overall, I think it's VERY good and actually does a very good job at modernizing the cast, ESPECIALLY the triplets.

Like, before this point, I can't remember any media that didn't just treat them as three of the same character (although I didn't watch the original or Quack Pack, so I could be completely wrong in that regard). But now they all have their own personalities and I think that's SO great for them!!! I really hope future stuff with the triplets keeps that trend going, because YEAH!!! We're past the point where twins or triplets in cartoons should be carbon copies of each other!!! Let them be their own people!!!

Also DELLA!!!! They actually brought in DELLA!!!! I love how they handled her plot, and the fact that they, like, acknowledged her at ALL!!! That was so cool!!!

And I managed to get through ALL of that without talking about Boyd, who was literally my reason for watching the show at all. I was deep into a The Adventure Zone fixation at the time, with my favorite character being Angus Mcdonald, and seeing GIFsets of Boyd made me go 'Oh that little baby reminds me of Angus', thus causing me to catch up on the show completely just so I could meet him.

And AUGH, he didn't disappoint and end up not only being one of my biggest comfort characters of all time, but also helping me to trans my gender further than it already was, and now look at me!!!

I have so much more I could gush about, and also I could point to the DTLS AU, aka mine and Roman's beautiful crossover brainchild that we've been working on for years, and how much both have influenced me creatively. But augh,,,,no matter my complaints about the last few episodes, I still really enjoy the show a lot. I should do a rewatch soon.

“Of course you are.” Ozma tapped his beak thoughtfully, and then gestured outward- past the school grounds and into the city beyond. “Look out there, young man. You see that city? Every single person in that city has hurt people. Some small hurts, immediately forgotten, lost to the minutiae of life. Other hurts larger, hurts that will scar and maim.” A sigh, a frown. “And some hurts that will never heal in all the lifetimes of humanity.”

He fell silent at that, and his frown deepened, and for just that breath of time he was a very old rooster indeed-

-and then just as quickly it passed and he gave Boyd a bright smile. “But that is the price we pay for our humanity. We are not meant to be alone.”

When Gyro decides he doesn't want to take a delivery to a lab in the next city over, he asks Boyd to do it instead. It's meant to be a quick errand, but a robot boy in a robotics lab is like catnip to the people there, and Boyd quickly begins building friendships left and right- and inadvertently thrusts himself and the rest of the extended Duck family into their biggest adventure yet as they begin mingling with their new friends in the Cities.
