Ok don't mind me but I was just thinking about immortal Alec and them proposing so: Would Magnus or Alec propose? Would Alec tell Magnus he's researching how to become immortal (like before he knows if it's possible)? Would he do it as soon as he finds a spell/whatever? Would he do it in his 20s, or his 30s? Would he do it before or after their marriage? Lol I just like it when you talk about immortal Alec

ah omg omg omg okay! So! I have very definite opinions on this and I feel like I’ve never actually told anyone besides that I am 100% for immortal malec although I can definitely appreciate fics that explore the angst and overwhelming adoration that would still happen even if alec stayed mortal.

So. Alec 100% proposes. Again, while I can certainly enjoy fics where Magnus is the one to do it, I strongly believe that alec would be the one to take them to that next step– he’s always the one that propels them forward, either with the first kiss, first ‘i love you’ or first time having sex or first (rip him) suggestion of moving in together. Alec proposes. (lol I have so many thoughts about how he does it but alas).

However!!! I don’t think that Alec proposes until he’s either 1) found a way to become immortal or 2) is already immortal. This is me hating the angst and not wanting to get into the lingering cloud over their engagement/marriage/life by having them both think one day it will come to an end. They don’t decide on the next step until alec has found a way to stay by magnus’s side forever. Alec wouldn’t want magnus to explicitly tie himself to someone who’s gonna die on him one day and magnus has just never taken that step and he can’t be the one to propose because he still has those insecurities that alec will leave/grow disenchanted/ he doesn’t want to be the one that will live on indefinitely after alec dies.

I also think alec would keep the researching under wraps because he wouldn’t want to rehash the immortality argument or make magnus feel bad. He does it on his own– I’ve mentioned in fics that he does so in secret, on his own, and he deals with those emotions– of mourning and accepting that his family will leave him– that he is in some way abandoning them for magnus– on his own and a personal hc of mine is that it’s a rough time in their relationship because alec is distant and not in the best headspace and magnus doesn’t know what’s going on but this is one instance where he’s afraid to pry because he’s worried that (as this would be well into their relationship) that alec is finally becoming someone who is realizing that maybe an immortal warlock is Too Much.

However, when alec finds the way to do it he immediately tells magnus and they have a long overdue talk and everything settles back down but both of them are just overcome with awe and wonder and an overwhelming love– and love isn’t even a good enough word. It’s devotion and certainty and a relief so strong it brings them both to their knees.

Again, because I dislike angst lol, I would have him find the solution in his twenties– maybe around the 3-5 year mark?? both of them at that point know (though of course magnus has lingering doubts from past experience) that they are it for each other and immortality is the elephant in the room that they Do Not Talk About.

I also have read some really great fics where there’s an event that makes alec immortal– a mission gone wrong and a weird ass demon or ceremony makes him immortal and tbh i love that idea too.

Honestly, I just live for immortal malec. It’s not only a sign of their true love, that they are soulmates, but alec is the one person who will genuinely never leave Magnus. Alec took his life into his own hands for the first time when he strode down the aisle and he never stops– he will always pick magnus. That doesn’t mean that it is easy, that he won’t suffer for it sometimes (when izzy dies, when the parabatai bond is severed) but it’s worth it and magnus will always be there for him, helping him. They see empires rise and fall and through it all they remain a constant. They travel and live and alec becomes a revered shadowhunter, responsible for all sorts of changes in the clave and is generally a take-no-prisoners tour de force.
