The legendary Cassini-Huygens mission took almost seven years to reach Saturn, and spent over a decade exploring the planet and its moons. And on December 25th 2004, nearly a quarter of a century after Voyager 1’s flyby, the Huygens probe detached from Cassini, in a bid to become the first probe ever to land on a body in the outer solar system.
The team had designed Huygens to float, but it landed in what appeared to be an empty riverbed. And the river channels it imaged during its descent were dry... It saw a landscape of rolling dune fields, vast plains and more dried up rivers. It seemed Titan was a desert world.
But in 2006, after many months of searching, Cassini’s radar instrument found what everyone had been waiting for. Lakes and seas of liquid methane at the north pole. Titan’s equatorial region may be a desert, but Cassini had proved that its poles were anything but.
In Titan’s deserts, autumn brings change to the air. Monsoons arrive from the south, unleashing torrents of methane rain. Because of Titan’s low gravity and dense atmosphere, the raindrops fall about six times slower than on Earth. These storms dump enough liquid methane onto the surface to create flash floods, which drain into dry river beds, carving into the landscape, before spilling out onto vast floodplains.
It is now believed Titan’s storm belt goes on an epic 29-and-a-half-year journey from one pole to the other and back again: slow motion seasons, unleashing massive slow motion storms, creating seasonal rivers of methane, in a desert on one of Saturn’s moons.

Agane
In the captivating land of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the legend of the Aganealso known as Anguane—unfolds across a tapestry of mystical landscapes, each season offering a unique glimpse into these enigmatic water nymphs.
Faedis in autumn is a scene of vivid transformation. The chestnut forests are ablaze with hues of orange and gold, while the first snow delicately brushes the fir trees, creating a surreal, picturesque setting. As twilight descends, the mist rising from the springs and the Cascate Gemelle—the Twin Waterfalls—casts an enchanting shroud over the village.
It is during these misty evenings that the Agane—ethereal water nymphs clad in white—are said to appear. Their haunting beauty and playful nature lure those who captivate their interest to the riverbed. There, their captives remain until dawn, when the Agane erase all memories of the night’s events, leaving them bewildered yet unharmed.
In Torreano, nestled in the Colli Orientali, winter brings a starkly different atmosphere. The narrow, rugged valley is blanketed in snow, and the Grotta Foràn di Landri, hidden in the forested terrain, becomes a place of mystical significance. According to local legend, the Agane—ancient and wild female figures—inhabit this cave. As night falls, the mist rising from the icy stream forms a dense fog that envelops the area. Here, the Agane are believed to dwell, their melodic whispers and ghostly songs adding to the otherworldly ambiance.
Spring in the Colli Orientali brings renewal to the rolling hills and lush vineyards. The mist that rises from the valleys takes on a delicate, spectral quality. During this season, the Agane are said to emerge from the mist, their ghostly beauty harmonizing with the blooming landscape. They lead intrigued individuals to the riverbed, where they stay until dawn.
In Tramonti di Sopra, high in the Carnic Alps, summer provides a dramatic Alpine backdrop. The verdant forests and rugged terrain, bathed in summer warmth, are enveloped by a dense fog rolling in from the mountains. The term Agane, or Anguane, is derived from the Latin aquileiese, meaning “water nymph,” and reflects their role as spirits of water sources such as springs, rivers, and streams. They are represented in various ways—sometimes as youthful, attractive maidens, and other times as lively, older women. During full moon nights, the Agane gather for moonlit dances, clad in white garments which they later hang out to dry under the lunar light. These beings are known to protect fishermen, assist in tasks like wool processing and cheese-making, and inspire dreams in children.
Historical accounts
In Povoletto, historical accounts from 1873 describe the Agane as ethereal figures dressed in white, performing dances under the full moon before disappearing into the mist.
This portrayal fits with broader folklore, depicting the Agane as elusive and enchanting beings whose beauty and playfulness make for both mesmerizing and bewildering encounters.

CanyonClan, nestled in the rugged landscapes of the American South/Southwest during the late 1800s to early 1900s, thrives within a stone canyon ensconced by sprawling desert plains. The clan's territory boasts a unique blend of rocky outcrops, dry scrublands, and winding riverbeds, offering both shelter and challenges to its inhabitants.
Despite the harshness of their environment, CanyonClan's cats are tenacious and resourceful, drawing strength from the stark beauty and untamed spirit of the American frontier that surrounds them.
Their stories echo through the canyons, a testament to their unwavering bond with the land and the enduring spirit of survival that defines their way of life.

Look, we don't love like flowers
with only one season behind us;
when we love,
a sap older than memory rises in our arms. O girl,
it's like this: inside us we haven't
loved just some one in the future,
but a fermenting tribe; not just
one child, but fathers, cradled
inside us like ruins
of mountains, the dry riverbed
of former mothers, yes, and all
that
soundless landscape under its
clouded
or clear destiny girl, all this --- came before you.
~ Rilke
“You never desire someone or something, you always desire an aggregate. It’s not complicated. Our question was: what is the nature of relations between elements for there to be desire, for these elements to become desirable? I don’t desire a woman — I am ashamed to say that since Proust already said it, and it’s beautiful in Proust. I don’t desire a woman, I also desire a landscape that is enveloped in this woman, a landscape that, if needs be, I don’t know — but that I can feel. As long as I haven’t yet unfolded the landscape that envelops her, I will not be happy, that is, my desire … will remain unsatisfied…. I don’t desire an aggregate either, I desire within an aggregate…. Drinking never meant solely ‘I desire to drink’ and that’s it. It means, either, I desire to drink all alone while working, or drink all alone while relaxing, or going out to find friends to have a drink, go to some little cafe…. To desire is to construct an assemblage.”
~ Gilles Deleuze: ’D’ for Desire

Flooding in Israel: A Winter Challenge 🌧️🌊
Today, I want to talk about a lesser-known aspect of Israel's winter - the surprising and often challenging floods. In a land more commonly associated with deserts and dry climates, winter floods are a stark contrast, bringing both awe and hardship 🌧️🇮🇱
Winter in Israel, especially from December to March, can be unexpectedly wet. This is particularly true in areas like the Negev Desert, where the arid landscape isn't equipped to handle sudden heavy rains. The result? Flash floods that can transform dry riverbeds, known as wadis, into raging torrents in minutes 🏜️💦
These floods, while fascinating in their power, pose significant risks. They can sweep away cars and even cause fatalities, especially among those unprepared for such sudden changes. The Israeli authorities often issue warnings, urging people to stay away from flood-prone areas during heavy rains 🚨🚫
Despite the dangers, these floods also bring a unique beauty. The arid regions burst into life, with flowers and greenery emerging in the once dry landscapes. For photographers and nature lovers, this transformation is a spectacular sight 📸🌼
The video is from Mamshit Stream /'na-'khal ma-ma-'sheet/ נַחַל מַמָּשִׁית a seasonal stream located in the Negev Highland area, one of the northernmost streams there. The stream is situated about five kilometers from the city of Dimona. Mamshit Stream is a nature reserve and is named after the nearby ancient city of Mamshit.
In urban areas like Tel Aviv, heavy rains can overwhelm drainage systems, leading to urban flooding. This not only disrupts daily life but also raises concerns about infrastructure and city planning in the face of changing climate patterns 🏙️💧
As we face these wet winters, let's remember the importance of being prepared and respecting nature's power. While the floods are a testament to the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of Israel, they also remind us of our responsibility to understand and adapt to our environment 🌦️🌈
Stay safe and embrace the beauty and challenges of Israel's winter season! 💙🤍
