Summary: (First Responders!AU) Moving to Los Angeles and living with your brother, Thor, was never part of your plan nor was being a 9-1-1 dispatcher, but plans change when you are faced with your own emergencies. In your case, it was leaving behind a relationship that wasnât as perfect as it seemed. Will this be the fresh start you were hoping for or will your past find a way to catch up with you?
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Odinson!Sister Reader
Word Count: 7700+ (Whoops!)
Warnings: Fire, triggers, angst, fluff, trauma, arson, language
Lifeline Masterlist / Main Masterlist
AN: Flashbacks in italics
âOkay, Team, we have a single-level house fire in a local suburb. A neighbor called it in but isnât sure if anyone is home. The owners of the house are newly married, Ian Boothby and Darcy Lewis. He suspected the husband to be home since he saw him mowing the lawn earlier this morning. Now, when we get on scene, I want Steve to stay with the truck engine in case the ventilation team needs help on site. On ventilation I want...â Carol continued to give demands to the rest of the team. âAs for Thor and Bucky, search the home.â Everyone agreed with Danverâs orders, and Steve nodded, looking out the window of the truck.
âHey man, you alright?â Sam asked Steve through his headset, taking in his appearance, sitting across from him.
âYeah, Iâm good. Getting my head in the game.â
âOkay.â Sam narrowed his eyes, nodding but not believing him. âLetâs do this, boys and girls.â
At the scene, Bucky and Thor went to the hatch to grab their tanks and masks before running into the burning house in record time.Â
âIâll go left, and you go right,â Thor commanded over the walkie.
âGot it,â Bucky added. âFirst bedroom clear.âÂ
âLiving room clear,â Thor voiced.
Steve went to talk with the ventilation team but noticed the houseâs skylight on the roof was already broken, so the ladder truck wouldnât be needed. He rushed back over to Danverâs to figure out the next game plan when Thorâs voice broke through the walkie.
âFound Ian in the kitchen, heading out now. Val, get the gurney ready.â
Steve watched Thor run out with Ian in his arms, coughing. He placed him on the gurney, and Val put an oxygen mask on him, but he immediately pulled it off.Â
âMy wife, Darcy,â he wheezed in a British accent. âSheâs still in there. Please...please save her.âÂ
âBarnes, his wife is still in there somewhere,â Carol commanded into her walkie, but there was no reply. âBarnes.â
A second later, Bucky was running out of the burning house with Darcy in his arms. He laid her on the ground and tore off his mask, and shouted, âsheâs not breathing.â Sam rushed to their side and started chest compressions.Â
Ian jumped off the gurney and ran over to them. âPlease...please help her. Donât let her die,â Ian cried, holding onto Darcyâs hand. âI donât know what I would do without her.â
Steveâs eyes stayed glued to the scene before him. His mouth went dry, and he started to hear his heartbeat in his ears. He tried to concentrate on breathing evenly, but it didnât help. He turned away from the scene, stumbling to the side of the truck. He squeezed his eyes shut as flashes of Peggy drifted to the front of his mind: her smiling at him as they laid in bed together, her waving goodbye to him when he went off to work, and her lying motionless on the cold ground. He put a hand on the truck to hold himself steady, feeling his chin start to tremble and his chest start to tighten with every breath he took.Â
Steve heard a cry of relief behind him, forcing his eyes to snap open. He glanced over his shoulder as all the oxygen left his lungs, seeing Darcy sitting up and hugging her husband. He turned back to the truck, closing his eyes, causing a few tears to slide down his cheeks. He shook his head, knowing he should be happy Darcy is alive, and we got to her in time, but his mind continued to drift back to the worst day of his life.Â
âYou okay, pal?â Bucky inquired in a soothing voice.
Steveâs eyes shot open, rubbing his hand on his cheeks before he turned around. âYeah.â He nodded his head a little too much, waving it off. âItâs nothing. Iâll be fine.â
âYou sure, pal, because you donât look fine to me.â
âI will be--â he licked his lips â--how...how is she?â
âSheâs breathing. Theyâre both on their way to the hospital now.â
âGood,â Steve swallowed, letting out a deep sigh of relief. âThatâs good.âÂ
âHey, Iâm here if you need me.â Bucky patted him on the back before stepping away to help calm down the blaze.Â
âYou okay, Rogers?â Carol asked, and Steve snapped his head in her direction.Â
âYeah, Carol. Iâm fine--â he leaned against the truck â--think I--I think I inhaled a little too much smoke. Heads a little fuzzy.â
âThat makes total sense, considering you were nowhere near the smoke,â she recalled, earning a slight smirk from Steve. He shook his head about to say something, but she beat him to it. âHey, I get it.â He gulped, rubbing his lips together. âItâs always hard when youâre working a call, and something triggers a memory. Good, bad, or whatever, but it pulls you back to that day, making you feel something you wish you didnât have to feel again.â She paused, shaking her head. âI know what you went through, but itâs one of the reasons I hired you to be a part of my team. I might sound like a terrible person for saying this, but you know what loss is, and sometimes if you experience it, you will do whatever it takes to make sure others donât feel that way.â
Steve bit his lip, nodding at the ground.Â
âYouâre a great member to our team, Rogers. And I want you to know that there are counselors available to you in case you need to talk, or if you want to talk to the team, weâre all here for you.â
âThanks, Ace, but Iâve gotten the whole run down before and talked to someone in Brooklyn after everything happened.â
âTake advantage of it here, too. It will help, or you can always talk to someone else,â she suggested with a half shrug.
âThanks, Iâll consider it.â He nodded as she patted him on the shoulder and returned to the front line.Â
_________
You sat down on the couch, pulling a blanket over you, and switched on the tv. You browsed through the many streaming services you had, along with a few Loki paid for. The sound of the front gate buzzing forced you to let out a loud annoyed sigh. You crawled out from under your warm blanket and went to the digital screen to see who was at the front gate. Your eyes widened, realizing it was Steve. You havenât talked to him since you ran out of his house like a crazy person, but what was he doing here? Thor and Steve were on the same shift tonight, and judging by the small screen, he was still wearing his fire station logo shirt.
âFuck, something happened to Thor,â you mumbled, buzzing Steve in as you started pacing the front doorway. He knocked on the door, and you took in a sharp breath, opening the door. Steve was still a little dirty, but you could tell he tried to clean himself up. His ears and some of his neck still had smoke residue on them, but something in his blue eyes told you something was wrong.Â
âIs everything okay, Steve? Did something happen to Thor?âÂ
âNo, no, he's fine,â He looked down at his appearance. âIâm sorry. I wasn't thinking when I came straight here, but yeah, yes, your brother is fine.â
âYou donât have to be sorry. Everyoneâs okay, thatâs all that matters,â you replied, furrowing your brows together. âBut...but are you okay? Here come in.â You opened the door for him and closed it behind him.
âItâs about the other night when you rushed out of my apartment after breaking the wine glass.â
âOh, um, yeah. Iâm sorry about that, again.â Your voice cracked, crossing your arms across your chest.Â
âHey, it wasnât your fault. No need to apologize for it.â He held up his hands to show he wasnât going to hurt you. âI hope you know that it was an accident, and accidents happen all the time.â He shrugged, putting his hands in his front pockets.
âI know,â you whispered, rubbing your hands over your upper arms.Â
âI got to thinking about how it might have triggered something like...like a memory with Billy.â He paused, licking his lips as he watched your eyes flash to his. âI remember you mentioning a wine glass before, but Iâm only asking because before I came here, I had a trigger. A memory of something I would rather forget and move on from, but I canât.â
âWhat sort of memory?â You questioned, stepping a little closer to him.Â
He stared at the ground, rubbing his scruff with his hand, and let out a deep breath, and his eyes connected with yours. âIt reminded me of my wife and how I didn't get to her in time to save her.âÂ
Your eyes widened, and you didn't know what to say. âIâm so sorry, Steve. I had no idea.â
âMost people donât,â he shrugged with his hands still in his pockets.
Steve crossed his arms across his chest and leaned against the back of your couch, staring off into the distance. Steve was doing what you always did. Replaying the same scene over and over again, trying to come forth with a different solution, but it would always end the same way.
You stepped closer to Steve to see his eyes drift back up to you. You offer him your hand and lead him to the other side of the couch.Â
âThinking about her now feels like it all happened ages ago.â He stared at the coffee table, folding his hands together in front of him.
âWas her name Peggy?â His eyes shot to yours, and he nodded. âHow did you two meet?â
Steve smirked to himself before looking over at you. âWe met when I was a junior in high school. She was going to this fancy prep school for the elite, and I was in public school. I donât know how I caught her attentionâŚ
Steve was in the public library, researching information for his english final. His cheek throbbed after getting into a fight earlier today that his mom would ground him for later, but right now, he needed to get this done. His family didnât own a computer, and he always ended up using Buckyâs for projects but knew he could get it done if he spent enough time at the library.Â
There was some commotion behind him, and from the reflection on the computer screen, it was a group of girls sitting down at a table. They were whispering about something, and Steve couldnât help but roll his eyes. Libraries are quiet for a reason, so people can focus on what they came to do and leave when it's done.Â
He sighed, glancing over his shoulders after hearing more loud whispers and a few giggles. They were from an elite school, judging by their uniforms. Three of them were looking at him and smiling, but the one had her head in a book. He couldnât help but notice her brunette hair and the bright red lipstick on her lips that he couldn't help but feel drawn to. She looked up, and he nodded at them, slipping on his headphones and getting back to work. On the computer screen, he could see Red Lips staring at him every so often, and he couldnât help but smirk.Â
He was working on the conclusion when someone patted him on the back, and he looked over to see Bucky, narrowing his eyebrows at him.
âWhatâs up, man?â He asked, taking off his headphones.
âWhoa, pal, what happened to your face?â
âIt will heal.â Steve shrugged, biting his bottom lip. âIt was just a little fight. Not a big deal.â
âWhy do you always have to pick on the big guy?â
âUsually, he's the jerk.â
âRight,â Bucky chuckled, shaking his head. âDid you see those elite girls behind you? I mean, Wow!â Bucky winked in their direction, and they giggled.
âYeah, hard to miss with all their giggles. I had to put my headphones on,â Steve added, looking over at them, immediately finding Red Lips. She rolled her eyes, but he didnât miss the small subtle smirk on her lips that she was trying to hide.Â
âPal, I think they were trying to get your attention.â
âWhy?â
âYou donât know a damn thing about women, do you?â Bucky grinned, putting his hands in his pockets and leaning against one of the computer chairs next to him.
âLike you do? Weâre still in high school, Buck. We donât really know anything about women.â
âSpeak for yourself, champ.â
Steve rolled his eyes after saving everything to a flash drive and stood up. âLetâs get out of here.â
âThen, a week later, I saw her again, but she was alone this time. She sat at the same table, chewing on the tip of her pencil, reading through her textbook, and taking notes. She was still in her school uniform, and her lips were still the same shade of redâŚ
âNot with your friends today?â Steve asked, taking off this backpack.Â
She looked around her as if he was talking to someone else, but then her eyes connected with his. âI could say the same about your friend.âÂ
His eyes widened at hearing a British accent pass her lips. âI focus better when heâs not here. He can get pretty annoying.â
âIâll have to agree with you there. All the excessive giggling isnât a good focus aid either,â She smirked, shaking her head. âItâs nice to see your bruise is healing nicely on your cheek.â
âOh ah, yeah,â Steve reached up to touch his cheek. âIâm Steve Rogers.âÂ
âPeggy Carter.â
âEvery week, like clockwork, I would see her, and we ended up doing homework together. Not like we were learning the same things, but just to be in the same room together. It took me a while to finally get the nerve to ask her out. I still remember her response to this day--â he smiled to himself â--Wow, you really donât know a bloody thing about women because you shouldâve done this months ago,â Steve voiced in a British accent.
âShe sounds like she knew how to put you in your place,â you smirked at him, and he nodded.
âShe did.â
âWhat happened after high school?â
âI didnât end up going to college much to my parent's disapproval, but I didnât know what I wanted to do. So instead, I went straight into work while Peggy went to college. I worked a variety of different jobs, trying to find my niche. I ended up working in construction for a couple of years, realizing I like building homes and giving back to the community. It was a satisfying feeling, but I knew I wanted to do more, but I didnât know how. Weird enough, Peggy was the one who mentioned joining the fire department.â
âSteve,â Peggy called, walking into their small studio apartment to find Steve making supper.Â
âHey, doll. How was class?â
âDull, but itâs law school. And, Steven, donât call me that I'm not made of porcelain.â She walked over, hitting him playfully on the shoulder and leaned up to kiss him on the cheek, making his smile spread wider. âAt least you wonât look like a choir boy once this grows in,â she joked, rubbing her thumb over his cheek feeling the scruff starting to grow on his face. âOh, I saw something today on one of the many bulletin boards on campus.â
âWhat was that?â
âJoining the fire department.â
âTo be a firefighter?â
âYes, I grabbed the brochure.â She pulled it out of her purse and handed it to him.Â
âIâll look at it later,â he nodded, putting it on the counter behind him.
âI bet youâd love it, and seeing you in that uniform. Woooo!â Peggy fanned herself with her hand as she walked into the bathroom. âI would swoon dear, swoon.â
He chuckled to himself and picked up the brochure, reading parts of it out loud. ââWhat fuels your fire?â Interesting way to grab someone's attention, I guess. âWe teach, we train, we serve together.ââ He hummed, flipping open the brochure and reading it to himself. When he got to the last section, something stuck with him. âAs a firefighter, you are a role model, and you will make a difference.â
âI think someone is sold on the idea,â Peggy smiled, wrapping her arms around his waist, and he put his arm around her, pulling her in closer to his side. âAnd, if you donât like it, you can quit and find something else.â
âIt might be worth a shot,â he grinned, leaning down and kissing Peggy. âThanks for looking out for me, Peg.â
âSwoon, can I say I love her?â you commented, hearing him let out a soft chuckle.Â
âEveryone did, and after she showed me that brochure, I went to do the 14-week program at the Fire Academy in New Jersey, and she was right, I loved it. Being able to work with a team and build a sense of camaraderie with each other. It was like having an extended family.â He paused, wringing his hands together. âWhen Peggy graduated law school, she was offered a prestigious position at a law firm in Manhattan, and I got recruited by one of the fire stations in Brooklyn. Then, I finally went out and bought Peggy a ring with the money I saved up working all those odd-end jobsâŚÂ
âSteve, what about this big one? It says, sorry boys, Iâm taken when sheâs at the office, and itâs enough to make her friends jealous,â Bucky commented, pointing at the rings in the case.Â
Steve shook her head, âSheâs not like that, Buck. She doesnât want a big rock; she wants something practical enough to wear to work and put away the bad guys, but pretty enough that she can show it off.â
âSounds like you are in a real debacle, pal.âÂ
Steve hummed, scanning over the many different styles of ring. He wasnât an expert, but he knew what Peggy would like and not like.
âHey, Steve. I am actually in a bit of a debacle myself.â Bucky confided, leaning against one of the ring cases.
âWhat about?â
âI got offered a position at one of the Los Angeles Fire Department stations.â
âYou want to leave Brooklyn?â Steve questioned, narrowing his eyes at him.
"I donât know, it sounds like a great opportunity. And, I kind of always felt like getting out of here, living somewhere else, and trying something new.âÂ
âI get it, and there isnât much holding you here besides your friends and family. I mean, who cares about them, am I right?" Steve sighed, shrugging his shoulders in defeat as he continued to search for a ring.
âI've already talked with them about it, and they think I should do it.â
âWait, really?" Steve's head snapped to Bucky, and he nodded. "To be honest, Buck, I will miss you and Peggy will, too, but if itâs an opportunity you donât want to pass up, then I think you should do it.â
"Really?"
"Yeah," Steve smiled, and Bucky pulled him in for an abrupt hug. Steve patted Bucky on the back a few times before they separated. "You just have to promise me you wonât do anything stupid out there.â
"How can I? When Iâm keeping all the stupid here with you.â
âAre you gentlemen looking for anything in particular?â Steve looked up at the guy behind the counter. This name tag read Broker, and he probably had the best eyebrows in the business.
âUm, yeah, an engagement ring that is stylish but still practical and pretty.â
âYou got anything like that,â Bucky asked, crossing his arms.
âI might have a few; excuse me for a second,â Broker nodded, walking into the back room.
âSo when you find this ring? How are you going to do it?â
âAt the public library.â
âIâm sorry, that old place,â Bucky chuckled, shaking his head. âI thought you would take her out to a romantic dinner and hide it in her dessert or in her wine glass."
âWe met there, and itâs kind of symbolic in a way. And hiding the ring in dessert, do you know nothing about woman Bucky? Most women just want to eat their dessert, not make it a scavenger hunt and be a reason to break a tooth."
âGood point,â he agreed, pointing his finger at him. âIâm sure whatever you do, Peggy will love it.â
âThanks, man.â
âHere we are, gentlemen. I found these three rings that are both elegant and practical.â
Steve stared down at them, and his eyes continued traveling to one. He picked it up with a small smirk on his lips and glanced over at Bucky.
âItâs perfect, pal.â Bucky grinned, patting him on the back.
âDid you end up proposing at the public library?â You couldnât help the warm smile gracing your lips.
âYes,â he nodded. âAnd she loved it. She said it was cheesy, but she loved it.â
âAny girl would.â
âAnyways, we got married at her family's estate. It was a small yet charming wedding. She wore this amazing dress, but my favorite part was the red lipstick she wore.â His face flushed at the memory, letting out a content sigh. âWe ended up moving to Brooklyn after her parents helped us put a down payment on a small four-story home, and it was way better than any studio apartment we crammed into.â
âSteve, I donât think I will ever get tired of this kitchen,â Peggy smiled, cutting some lettuce on one side of the island while Steve formed burgers on the other side. They were having a little housewarming slash Fourth of July Birthday bash for him.Â
Steve smiled at her comment as his eyes wandered around the kitchen. The cabinets were teal with a stony black countertop. The ceiling had exposed wooden beams, giving it a rustic flair. Three lights hung down over a wooden oak island in the center of the kitchen. It was a kitchen you would see in a home magazine, but instead, it was their kitchen. It even had two sinks, but he didnât understand the purpose of them both. Although, he did enjoy the huge fridge and the amount of space in the walk-in pantry. It was a professional kitchen for two amateur cooks.Â
âIf it wasnât the kitchen that sold me on this house, then it was that huge bathtub in the master bathroom. No more all in one shower and bath.â She grinned, starting to cut the vegetables for the veggie plate.Â
âMy favorite is the rooftop deck.â
âOf course it is--â she shook her head â--itâs gonna turn into a man cave up there soon. I mean, I did buy you that new grill for your birthday today, but I wonder what else you and the guys are gonna drag up there.â
âIt wonât be anything too crazy.â
âThatâs what you say now,â she winked.
âIt does sound like a kitchen youâd see in a magazine.â
âYeah.â His calming smile drifted away, leaving a frown in its place. âRemember when you mentioned the Arson Artist, Aldrich Killian?âÂ
âYeah, the guy that targeted first responder's families.â You nodded, not missing how Steve's jaw clenched at your statement.
âI wasnât completely honest when I told you I knew some people that lost someone during his reign--â his eyes drifted to yours as he let out a deep breath â--my...my wife, Peggy, died in his last so-called masterpiece.â
You didnât know what to say to him. His wife was killed, and a simple sorry wasn't going to bring her back or make him feel any better. Without hesitation, you reached out and grabbed a hold of his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. His eyes traveled down to your conjoined hands, and he interlocked his fingers between yours.
Steve remained silent, staring down at the coffee table. His elbow rested on his knee as his head rested in his other hand. Steve squeezed his eyes shut, lowering his head in his hand, resting it against his forehead. He let out a shaky breath, and you gave his hand another comforting squeeze.Â
"Steve, you don't have to tell me this if it's going to upset you. I understand better than anyone when it comes to talking about the messy things in life. You don't owe me an explanation," you explained, placing your other hand on his forearm. He turned his head in his hand to you, seeing his tearful eyes looking back at you. He sat up, rubbing his hand down his face and scratching at his jaw. He sniffled, staring back at you. Â
âI know thatâŚbutâŚum...I want to," He breathed, clearing his throat. âSo..um...thereâs this one day I kind of have engraved in my head, and as much as I try to forget what happened, I canât. In my head, that day never changes and always has the same ending. The ending I hate reliving whenever Iâm triggeredâŚ
Steve sighed, laying in his bed with Peggy asleep next to him. He looked over at her, noticing she was laying on her stomach with her head almost off her pillow, breathing heavily in and out. Her hair was sticking up in all directions and her mouth was slightly open. He loved waking up next to her and seeing this site before him. He smirked, reaching over to grab his phone, knowing he had a 24 hours shift starting in 5 hours. He wouldnât get to wake up next to her pretty face tomorrow, so he decided to snap a picture to smile at tomorrow or to blackmail her with it later. He snapped the picture.
âYou better delete that, or I will kill you, Steve Rogers.â
He chuckled. âOkay, yup, deleted.â He reached over, setting his phone back down on the end table.
âYouâre a horrible liar." She looked up at the alarm clock and sighed, putting her head back on the pillow.Â
âYou know what would be fun to do this morning?â
âMaking me breakfast.â
âI can do that after,â he scooted closer to Peggy.Â
âOr you can do it now,â Peggy stated, not moving away from Steve's advances as Steve put his hand around her waist and flipped her over, so he was on top of her.
âIâm not going to see you for a full 24 hours.â
âIâm sure you have pictures.â
âPictures donât do you justice, Red Lips.â He leaned down, puckering his lips and waiting for her kiss. She rolled her eyes with a loud sigh, leaning up and giving in to his kiss.Â
After an energetic morning he made Peggy her favorite breakfast before taking a quick shower and getting dressed in his uniform. He came downstairs to see Peggy waiting for him by the door.
âIf you didnât have to go to work right now, I would take you upstairs for round 3,â she winked, giving him a quick kiss.
âI will definitely take you up on that offer if youâre up for it, Peg.â He wiggled his eyebrows, forcing her to laugh as he wrapped his arms around her. âLove you.â He leaned down and kissed her again.
âLove you, too, Steven.â She hugged him close.Â
âStay safe.â
âI will.â
âThe day started out like any other day, and there wasnât anything out of the ordinary. A few calls came in about car accidents, heart attacks, and a grease fire at a local restaurant. And things were looking up with the Arson Artist case because the FBI brought in Anvil to help with the investigation. Around six that night, we got dispatched to a house fire in BrooklynâŚ.â
âAlright boys, you know the drill,â Captain Phillips stated over their headphones. âIt could be a house fire, but keep your eyes peeled for anything that looks suspicious.â
Steve looked out the window of the engine, and he realized this was the main road he took to work. His heart started to beat rapidly against his chest as he looked out the front window to see what street they were going to turn down. When they turned down his street, all the air left his lungs; his home was on fire.Â
The truck didnât even come to a complete stop, and he was out of the truck engine. He sprinted towards his front door, tossing on his jacket and his helmet as he heard his Captain yelling his name, but he ignored it. He skipped up the steps he so casually walked down earlier that morning.
When he kicked the front door in, all he saw was flames. âPEGGY,â he shouted, coughing into his sleeve. âPEGGY.â He hid his face with the sleeve of his jacket, running inside. He squinted his eyes against the smoke, not seeing anything, but something dark in the kitchen caught his eye. He stepped over to the kitchen, coughing as his eyes watered from the excessive amount of smoke in the air. When he reached the kitchen, he saw her tied to a chair with her head hanging down on her chest.Â
His heart broke, putting her chin in his hands. âPeggy,â he cried, feeling his eyes start to fill with real tears.Â
Dum Dum came in and grabbed ahold of Steve, pushing him towards the front door, and Gabe cut Peggy free from the restraints, carrying her in his arms. Once Steve was outside, he ran to Peggy seeing her body weak, barely clinging to life. Gabe laid her on the ground, and Jim felt for a heartbeat.Â
âStarting compressions,â Jim stated.Â
âPlease, please help her,â Steve cried, leaning down next to her. âCome on, Peggy.â
âChecking for a pulse, nothing. Starting compressions again.â
âCome on, Pegs. Please.â
âI got a pulse, but itâs faint. Letâs get her on the gurney and to the hospital, stat.â Jim and Dum Dum lifted her body onto the gurney and slid it into the back of the ambulance.
âSteve, go,â Dum Dum commanded. âWeâll do all we can here.â
He nodded, hopping into the back of the ambulance, grabbing a hold of Peggyâs hand. He brought her hand to his lips, and he cried, staring down at her. âIâm so sorry, Pegs.â Jim put an oxygen mask on her and a heart rate monitor clip on her finger.Â
âMan, itâs not your fault it was the Arson Artist,â Jim replied, and Steve shot him a quick nod.
He clutched onto her hand, not wanting to let go. He couldnât lose her. They were just starting their lives together, and he didnât know what he would do without her. They had so many things they still wanted to do: get weird hobbies, travel the world, start a family. Sheâll pull through this; she has to.Â
âAlmost there, Stevie.â Jim squeezed his shoulder, but he couldnât remove his eyes from Peggyâs form.Â
He squeezed his eyes shut, realizing Peggy was going to be okay. They were going to get to the hospital, and she was going to make it, and he wouldnât have to say goodbye.
Peggyâs heart rate monitor flatlined, and Steveâs eyes shot open. Jim went to the side of the gurney, pushing Steve out of the way, and administered CPR again. Steveâs eyes started to fill with tears once he realized his worst fear was becoming a reality.Â
The back of the ambulance doors flung open, and Jim shook his head. Steve grabbed ahold of Peggyâs hand once more and removed her oxygen mask. He cradled her face with one hand, holding on tight to her hand with the other. He stared at her, thinking it was all a dream and he would wake up to her smacking him with a pillow. He could feel his heartache with every shaky breath he took. He gulped, letting out a sob, running his thumb across her bottom lip. He leaned forward and planted a soft kiss on her cheek. âIâm so sorry, Peg.â
Your heart broke as a stray tear slid down your cheek, and you wiped it away. âSteve, Iâm ahhâŚâ
âI know." His tear-filled eyes flashed to yours, and he blinked them away, not giving them a chance to fall.Â
Without a second thought, you wrapped your arms around his shoulders, pulling him into a hug. He was tense at first but then relaxed, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you closer to him. You heard him let out a sniffle, forcing you to squeeze him a little tighter. You rubbed his back, trying to keep your tears at bay but having little success. âPlease tell me you still have that picture of her sleeping.â You could feel Steve let out a soft chuckle as he loosened his grip and pulled away from you.Â
âI do,â he sniffled, clearing his throat.Â
You eyed him, noticing the reminisce of tears on his cheeks. You grabbed the box of tissues sitting on the coffee table, taking a few, and handing them to Steve. He sighed, wiping the tears away, leaning back against the couch. He ran his hands down his face and tried to refocus.
âAfter everything happened, I was a mess. I didnât want to believe she was gone. I hoped it was all a dream, but it wasnât, and I blamed myself for not getting to her in time.â He paused, clearing his throat. âI was constantly thinking about the what ifâs and the if onlys of what I couldâve done differently. Not like it mattered much because she wasnât coming back,â he breathed, blinking away tears that started to form in the corner of his eyes.Â
âBut it wasnât your fault.â
âYouâre right to someone else looking in, it wasnât my fault, it was Killians, but I didnât want to see it that way. I thought if I stayed mad at myself, it would somehow fix it, but I wasnât in my right mind. I was hurting and pushing those who cared about me away. I was depressed but was too stubborn to admit it.
When I returned to work after my leave, my captain, Captain Phillips, declared me unstable and took me off active duty. He thought it was safer for me and everyone else if he put me behind a desk. I know he was looking out for me and wanted me to get better, but all I had left was my job, and he took it away from me.â Steve shrugged, running a hand through his hair.Â
âAfter about eight months, Phillips gave me an ultimatum. The only way I would be reinstated to active duty is if I talked to one of the department's assigned therapists at Ancient One and Associates.â He let out a deep breath. âIt wasnât so much an option as it was an order. I wasnât myself, and I havenât been. He wasnât the only one who saw it, but my squad did too. Whether it was from seeing the bags under my eyes due to the lack of sleep or from my pants getting looser from skipping meals. I was numb, lonely, and my family and friends didnât know what to say to me. I shut them out, even the ones who reached out and tried to help me. I didnât know how to talk about it, I didnât want to talk about it, and I didnât want to let her go. I didnât want this to be my new reality. I knew there was no other way for me to get around this by myself, so I decided to go to therapy.â
You remained silent as he paused, biting his lip, trying to figure out what to say next. He stared at the coffee table, and you couldnât help but admire him. Steveâs been through so much, and you never wouldâve suspected any of this with the way he carries himself. He seems so sure of himself and always has his feelings in check, but deep down, he has been through hell and back.Â
âWhen I first went to therapy, I thought it wouldnât help me. On the first day, the Ancient One called me out on it, saying heroes are the ones who donât think they need help, but sometimes they need it the most and are simply ashamed to admit it. She was right,â Steve mumbled with a half shrug.Â
âWith everything that happened, I had a hard time accepting the truth and forgiving myself because I didnât want to forget her. Peggy was so special to me, and I didnât want to push her aside as if I didnât love her anymore. I still did, and a part of me still does.â He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and wringing his hands together in front of him. âThe Ancient One helped me see things from a different perspective, and in ways, I never thought possible. There was one point when she reversed our roles, asking how Peggy would have responded if I was the one who died. To be honest, I never thought of it like that because I always wished I died with her, but when I thought about it, I know Peggy wouldâve accepted it sooner than I did. Sure, she wouldâve been emotional that I was gone, but I know she wouldâve been strong for everyone else, and when sheâd go home alone, she would grieve. Then, if Peggy ever found someone new, who cared for her like I did or more, Iâd want her to get remarried. All I would want is for her to be happy.
After realizing this new perspective, I knew Peggy wouldâve wanted the same for me. To be able to move on and be happy. So, I focused on getting better and going to therapy, which then got me reinstated to active duty. Things were looking up for the better, and I knew Peggy would be happy for me.Â
I even started reaching out to a few friends I shut out, one of them being Bucky. I hadnât spoken to him since Peggyâs funeral, but I hoped heâd answer and accept my apology. We ended up talking at least once a week, and then he mentioned a job opening at his station in L.A. I saw it as a chance to start over, so I took it.â He let out a deep breath. âDonât get me wrong, I loved Brooklyn, but it felt off after Peggy died, and then my mom passed away, which was inevitable because she had been sick for a while. But with all that happened, Brooklyn didnât feel like home, it was just a city filled with traffic, noise, and crowds. I felt alone in a city filled with people,â he sighed, shaking his head, looking over at you.
âYou make moving on sound so easy.â
âItâs not. Itâs probably one of the hardest things to do; it takes time, and itâs about moving on from the past and living in the now. Before I came out here, I talked about everything and made amends with my coworkers, apologized to my friends for being so selfish, and said goodbye to my parents and Peggy. It took me a while to get to that point, but Iâm happy to be where I am today.â Steve nodded, shooting you a closed-mouth smile.
âWhat do you think she thinks about you moving to LA and leaving Brooklyn?â
âSheâd understand, and I know sheâd want me to be happy and to try to move on from her. I know sheâd be proud to see how far Iâve come, but she knows Iâll never forget her.â You reached out and took his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. He smirked, his eyes drifting to yours. âTo be honest, I donât think Iâve talked about Peggy with anyone I wasnât paying.â
âRemind me to send you the bill,â you said, removing your hand from his and pointing at him.
He chuckled, âIâll look for it, but mail does get lost quite a bit.â
âCan I ask what triggered you to tell me all this?â You asked, earning a quick nod from Steve.
âToday, I saw a husband watch his wife get carried out of their burning home. He cried, begging us to bring her back, not wanting to lose the other half of himself. He didnât, but to me, it brought back the worst day of my life.â He turned towards you, staring into your eyes. âThere is always going to be a trigger. It can either be a good memory or a bad one, but whatever happens, itâs nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about.â
Your eyes flashed to his, and you gulped, knowing he was referring to the wine glass incident. You nodded, âIt's just every once in a while I see something or feel something that reminds me of him, and it triggers something in me, and I can't be pulled back.â
âI get it. You always hear time heals things, but the truth is ignoring it and not talking about it only compounds the damage and makes it worse. Youâre hoping it fades away, but itâs always in the back of your mind, haunting you and reminding you of everything that happened. The Ancient One told me it is better to allow yourself to feel what you went through because pretending youâre not hurt is not the same thing as healing; it just prolongs it. We may have experienced a different kind of loss. I lost my wife, and you lost yourself. Itâs a different scenario, but the advice is the same.â
âHow are you so full of wise words?â
âTherapy helps and life experiences,â Steve nodded with a soft chuckle. âIs that cliche?â
âA little,â you smiled. âBoth our lives have been pretty messed up, huh?â
âMaybe it's fateâs way of giving us a second chance.â
âIf you believe in that spiritual mumbo jumbo sort of thing,â you snorted, making him roll his eyes. âWhy did you decide to tell me about Peggy?â
âYou see, there is this girl I like, and I felt like I owed it to myself and her to be honest about it since she shared her story with me. I wanted her to get to know the side I donât share with many people,â he smirked with a tint of pink hitting his cheeks. He reached up, rubbing the back of his neck. Â
A sweet smile graced your lips, feeling a rush of heat to your face. âWell, she appreciates you telling her, and I can inform you that she feels the same way about you.âÂ
âThatâs good,â he cracked a smile, looking over at you with his blue eyes sparkling. âAt least now I know I didnât make a complete fool of myself.â
âI wouldnât say that,â you chuckled, feeling his body vibrate at your side with a silent snicker. âAre you going to be okay with going back to work?â
âYeah, I have a good support system there, and I know my team has my back. Itâs like one big messy extended family,â he smirked, nodding your head in agreement. âSpeaking of work, I should probably get back to my shift before another call comes in, and Carol wonders why this detour is taking me so long.â He winked, pushing himself off the couch. Â
âYeah, you donât want to get on her bad side.â You joked, standing up off the couch and following him to the door.Â
âAre you going to be okay?â Steve asked, opening the door and turning to face you. He furrowed his brows together, forming a small crease between them. âAre we going to be okay?âÂ
âYeah, weâre okay.â You nodded, your eyes drifting to the ground. âIâm getting a little better every day--â you shrugged, not wanting to talk about it â-- it just takes time, right?âÂ
His hand lifted your chin and your eyes flashed to his. âI know youâll get there.â He shot you a shy smile, brushing his thumb along your cheek, sending a rush of heat to your face. He dropped his hand, grabbing a hold of yours. âRemember, if you need someone to listen and is full of wisdom, Iâm here for you. And donât be ashamed to give therapy a chance; trust me, it will help more than you think.â
âOkay, hot stuff. I get it, â you scoffed, shaking your head. âStay safe out there.â
âI will. Have a good night, YN.â He brought your hand to his lips and kissed it, letting it go. You rolled your eyes at his gesture, but you couldnât stop the smile inching its way across your face.
You watched him walk down the sidewalk to your front gate, and he turned around one more time, waving goodbye. You waved back before he opened the gate and it clicked shut behind him. You closed your front door and leaned against it, covering your face in your hands, and let out a loud sigh. Steve seemed ready to take the next step, but were you?Â
You walked back over to the couch, returning to your blanket and switching the tv back on. You picked out a random movie to watch, but soon it became white noise in the background. You havenât been in a relationship since Billy, and to be frank, you were scared to give the whole relationship thing another shot. You and Steve joked about it, but you never thought it would actually happen. Even though Steve and Billy are two very different people, you couldnât help but be reminded of all the negatives that could come with it. Were you even ready? Should you have even been hanging out with Steve? Were you leading him on? What if he did the same thing Billy did? With all the negatives that came to your mind, maybe Steve was right, maybe it was time to give therapy a chance.

AN:Â Thanks for reading Part 13! If you haven't noticed yet, I'm all for angst, I don't like feeling it, but I like writing it!! This is probably one of my favorite chapters in this series because it's both emotional and tragic. I'm really hoping that while reading this part you fell in love with Peggy. Her part wasn't huge huge, but I hope it made you realize what Steve lost and how much she meant to him. Emotions, am I right!! Â Also, I felt doing the whole flashback thing for Steve would show the different relationship dynamic that Peggy and Steve had versus her and Billy's. Huge difference obviously, and I felt like it would be better to show how they communicated and acted towards each other rather then just talking about it. It's also why I went into a little more detail in the last chapter with Laura and Clint's relationship...again, showing the relationship dynamic. Sorry for that unnecessary ramble! đđ Â Anyways, do you think she is gonna give therapy a chance? What did you think about Steves backstory? And do you think this slow burn will finally end, and they will finally get together or will it be just a little longer?! đ Comments always welcome, and until next week, thanks again!Â

The First Avenger info dump because I can
Enlistment/Dog Tags/Awards:
It is canon that Bucky Barnes enlisted on his own right after Pearl Harbor (and Steve tried). This would make his dog tags a type two. His service number would start with a 1 (enlisted army soldier) and a 2 (from New York). This site can be used to generate dog tag numbers (I havenât tried all the functions, but be aware the O for officers is a 0 starting in 1942).Â
During WW2 (amongst other times), there was the Regular Army and the Army of the United States (which no longer exists). Voluntary enlisted men were in the Regular, with draftees in the other (officers were often part of both and had two separate ranks). If you choose to divert from canon and make Bucky a draftee (I personally have always liked this fanon because Iâm evil), his service number would start with 32 (drafted, New York). This would also better explain why Bucky rises to the rank of Sergeant so quickly as promotions happened constantly in the AUS ( Dwight D. Eisenhower rose from a colonel to five-star general in three years).Â
Steve would have a different type of dog tags than Bucky (including a different chain). He would have a type three (as would anyone between July 20, 1943 and March 31, 1944). I will illustrate the differences below with the custom tags I made for Steve's sister and Bucky in my fanfic (feel free to use the info from them). The N and 7 in her tag are for nurse.
The T42 youâll see below is the year tetanus shots were recieved. Iâve seen some with two years and some with one. The B is blood type and the P is religion.Â
Steve received an award for rescuing the POWs. Seeing as this wasnât presented by the president, Iâve decided it was the Distinguished Service Cross. This award comes with a $2 pay raise; as a Captain, Steve previously made $200 a month, paid monthly (post-serum). Bucky made $78 as a Sergeant, with a $3.90 pay raise after 3 years of service (December 1944). Steve also obtained SSR pins after joining them (and I believe the Howling Commandos should have as well). (Even though nurses had the rank of an officer, they didnât get equal pay until after WW2. They earned $70 a month for the first 3 years.)
Many soldiers put their second dog tag in their boot, usually slipped on the shoe laces in between the tongue and top of the shoe.
Not a fact, but I will add a link here to a website where you can either buy Bucky/Steveâs dogtags or make custom ones for $10 (personally, I would advocate for the custom as Buckyâs say heâs not from NY and show he is a draftee. Also, he has type B blood, not O. And Steve is Protestant, not Catholic. The site also states officerâs service numbers didnât start with 9, but those with special duties did. His service number would most like be between 800000 and 999999, starting with a 0- to show heâs an officer).
Sister: Margaret E Rogers N-724669 T42 B Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â P
Bucky: James B Barnes 12831412 T42 B Margaret Rogers (next of kin) 1404 Alameda Ave (next of kin address) Brooklyn NY Â Â P (address, religion)
Italian Front:
Seeing as the 107th were venturing to England in June 1943, they most likely headed straight to Sicily from there (or diverged if they had fuel) to aid in the invasion, continuing into the invasion of the mainland before pushing troops back toward Austria. Italy surrendered at the very beginning of the invasion of the mainland, so the Allies only fought Nazis and Italian soldiers loyal to Mussolini (National Republican Army), who was arrested during the invasion of Sicily and broken out during the mainland invasion. Seeing as Chester Phillips and Peggy were with Steve, they must have joined the 107th later. In my canon, they (and Howard) join at the beginning of the mainland invasion.Â
AM-lira (Allied-Military Currency), 100 "am-lire" for a U.S. dollar, was the currency specifically put into circulation for Allied Military after the landing in Sicily. It was used interchangeably with their normal currency. Once the Howling Commandoes join the SSR, they use British currency.Â
The 107thâs camp pre-Battle of Azzano was most likely behind the Volturno Line. Azzano is part of Umbria, which was about 170 miles into enemy territory.Â
Post-Azzano, the camp was most likely behind the Barbara Line. Walking approx 533 miles from Kreuzberg, Austria, with troops alternating resting periods in the trucks, walking approximately 42 miles for 12 hours a day, they would reach camp in thirteen days.
Random:
Steveâs canon address according to Avengers is 1404 Alameda Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11362. This is a Queens zip code. I changed it to 11237.
As a Sergeant, Bucky would command a squad of 12 soldiers (privates), split into 3 fireteams. He was also assigned a PFC (one of the scout riflemen) as an assistant; this soldier could serve as either the squad leader's messenger to the platoon commander or could be used to relay orders to other squad teams, as needed. Sergeants are responsible for the individual training, personal appearance and cleanliness of their soldiers, and are expected to set a standard for lower-ranked soldiers to live up to.
Women did have their own army sect for part of the war (Womenâs Army Corps) but they didnât go overseas as they didnât legally get benefits overseas {I didnât read a lot on this, take this with a grain of salt}. They did all the non-fighting jobs like listening to radio transmissions and fixing weapons.Â
On the ship, there were three-tier bunks. Enlisted men got footlockers under their beds (you could lift up the base), while officers got standing lockers. I would assume water on ships was cold, filtered from the ocean, and they had showers.
Showers were available but not popular at this time, just like hot water heaters. Many people still boiled water to take baths. People also didnât bathe as often and there was only one kind of shampoo and no conditioner. Women made their own concoctions, used soap, or straight up would do egg masks. Hair was kept clean by doing the â100 strokesâ with a hairbrush that was cleaned after every use. Indoor heating also wasnât used everywhere, leaving many places still using things like fireplaces and wood stoves.
Soldiers used latrines in WW2. They also used a bucket of water and a bar of soap to wash. When water was unavailable and snow was, it was melted and used. They could also simply use things like rivers and lakes if available but if unnecessary, weren't used as lice was prevalent along with disease. Clothes weren't washed often (depending on the situation, some men went weeks without washing their uniform, only changing into dry socks when necessary) but when they were, they were boiled in big pots of water in mass and hung on a line to dry (there were also other ways, but I preferred this one). They carried an extra shirt, socks and laces, water canteen, ammunition, a spade, grenades, a gas mask, food rations, a cup, a wash kit (toothpaste, razor, comb, etc), first aid pouch, and a helmet (usually on their head) in their haversack's/on their belt (and rations, of couse). There was also a tent pack, but most soldiers would simply carry a raincoat. Lots of candles and oil lanterns to light the night. Canvas water bags â also known as Lister bags â were hung around camps and used for dispensing drinking water in which a dose of chlorine was added for purification.
Medical:
Morbidity from such diseases as tuberculosis (anti-tuberculosis agents didnât begin to appear until 1949), rheumatic fever, typhus, dysentery, and malaria were high. There were tuberculosis quarantine wards separate from the other patients and were eventually evacuated. Frostbite was also common during the cold. Hepatitis A and B were also prevalent. Trench foot was also common, sometimes leading to jungle rot (often referred to as 'the creeping cruds'). PTSD was known then as 'battle fatigue'; men showcasing symptoms were often just given rest and food near the front lines and would normally rejoin the fight in a few days or were evacuated if necessary. All soldiers were vaccinated against tetanus, typhoid, smallpox, cholera, and yellow fever before shipping out. Dental hygiene was extremely important and many field hospitals were equipped with dental prosthetics.Â
Food:
A-Rations referred to fresh/refrigerated meats, bread, and vegetables, prepared in mess halls. These meals were basically the same as C-rations, but fresh and always warm.
C-Rations consisted of one M-unit (12 oz can, meat), one B-unit (12 oz can, bread/dessert), and an accessory pack. Each daily ration consisted of three M-units, three B-units, and three accessory packs (one for each meal). The cans were made of tinplate. The cans had a gold lacquer finish. C-rations can be eaten cold or hot and were cooked with a Coleman's pocket stove (which was made specifically for WW2 soldiers).
M-units initially had three kinds: meat and beans, meat and potato hash, and meat and vegetable stew. In 1943, meat and spaghetti in tomato sauce was added; along with meat and noodles, pork and rice, frankfurters and beans, and chicken & vegetables in 1944. 1944 also brought a chopped ham, egg, & potato unit and compressed cereal B-units to replace meat & vegetable hash.
B-units contained crackers, three sugar tablets, loose candy (Brach's chocolate caramels, candy-coated peanuts/raisins, Charms hard candy), and a packet/small can of beverage mix (instant coffee, powdered lemon drink, or bouillon soup powder). Orange drink powder was added in 1944. Due to spoilage, the loose candy was replaced in 1944 with a Brach's fudge disk or a Jim dandy.
Accessory packs (brown butcher paper) contained sugar tablets, water purification tablets, a flat wooden spoon, a piece of candy-coated chewing gum, three 3-packs or one 9-pack of cigarettes, a book of 20 moisture resistant matches, a paper-wrapped P-38 can opener (with instructions that everyone immediately throws out), and about 22.5 sheets of toilet paper. Cigarette brands included Camel, Chelsea, Chesterfield, Craven A-Brand, Lucky Strike, Old Gold, Philip Morris, Player's, Raleigh, and Wings (these were traded constantly). Can openers were meant to be disposable but soldiers wore them on their dog tags for later use either with opening cans or other things (clean muddy boots, screw screws, open letters, strip wires, trim loose thread, and sharpen pencils).Â
Seriously. They really gave every single soldier three can openers a day. With printed instructions. During metal rationing. Of which soldiers just put them on thier dog tag chains for later use. Where did all these excess can openers go? And why half a sheet of toilet paper?Â
Clothes:
The nurses wore an olive drab service jacket and skirt (they are seen in pants as well) and cap, khaki shirt and tie, and brown shoes (wore nursing shoes or boots). The rank insignia (a single gold bar for second lieutenants, the vast majority of nurses) was worn on the epaulets. A gold "U.S." pin was worn on each collar, and a gold caduceus with a red N was worn on each lapel. Whenever the service jacket wasn't worn, the rank insignia was pinned to the right collar, the caduceus on the left.
Soldierâs field uniforms looked like this (with some adjustments based on gun used). And yes, the leggings are neccessary, they helped keep feet dry:Â

Broklyn Laundry Service Offers Smart Shopping
The function of a laundry service company is very simple; to offer people a convenient place to clean & wash laundry. This was the mainstay of the laundromat business for many years, and unfortunately, it was a fairly difficult one to operate. Laundry services have evolved since that time, but the basic premise remains the same.
The world wide web offers an excellent resource for laundry services. The best way to begin your search for a Laundry service San Francisco is to browse their websites and obtain some background information on them. If you know anything about the business in question, it will be easy to ascertain that this is the right company for you. This can be determined by such things as their location, or even their proximity to your home. For example, if you live in a small rural area, then they are probably not as successful as companies that are more centrally located.
Some laundry services are also referred to as dry cleaning. This type of service is less common than its traditional laundry counterpart, but there is a growing demand for this service. Dry-cleaning is when your laundry is actually cleaned, not only folded. This type of service tends to be performed on a smaller scale than the larger dry cleaning facilities, but there is certainly no shortage of businesses offering this type of service. Again, the main goal is to ensure that your clothes are completely free of germs before they are put away.
Another option for those who want to use a laundry service in Brooklyn is the purchase of an app. There are many different mobile apps available, which include everything from washing machines to washer cycles and dryers. Brooklyn has an incredibly vibrant scene, due to the number of artists and musicians moving to the area and attracting attention from people across the country. There are dozens of popular Brooklyn hip hop and rap recording artists who have released their own albums or EPs that solely contain instructions for Brooklyn homeowners to purchase the Brooklyn-specific versions of the aforementioned apps, such as iRobot or Neat.
For those who are not interested in purchasing an app, Brooklyn is home to numerous professional laundry services that offer the types of washing machines and dryers listed above. Professional laundry services offer the same services as dry cleaning businesses, meaning that people who need to wash clothes professionally will need to contact the business that provides these services to discuss their requirements. Many professional laundry services will have their customer service numbers displayed on their website, to ensure that customers can contact them immediately with any questions or concerns. Once again, Brooklyn has an amazing number of local professional laundry services that provide these services, making it easy for people to clean their clothes.
Those who wish to do their own dry cleaning in Brooklyn should think about purchasing a commercial dry cleaner that is located within the Brooklyn area. Commercial dry cleaning companies will be able to supply individuals with high-grade dry cleaning equipment that is typically more expensive than the models provided by professional laundry services. Some Brooklyn Dry Cleaners advertises free shipping, which often means that their dry cleaning products are free to their clients. Free shipping can help those who may not be able to afford the full cost of a commercial dry cleaner's products, which can be especially appealing to those who are not paying full price for their dry cleaning products. In addition, many commercial Brooklyn dry cleaning companies also provide their customers with advice on how to effectively clean their clothes, which can prove very beneficial to those who wish to reduce the number of allergens that they release into the air. Clothes cleaned professionally are also much less likely to contain harmful residue, which is another concern in many homes.
In addition to hiring professional laundry services, there are a number of Brooklyn neighborhood laundry services that will allow customers to drop off their used garments at a designated location. One of the most popular Brooklyn laundry services that offers drop-off services is Broklyn Laundry, which has a facility in the East Village. Customers can place their items at any of the Broklyn Laundry locations between the hours of Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday. Users can then get back to work as soon as possible, while still having the garments they have washed arranged to arrive on their doorstep. Broklyn Laundry also allows its users to make requests for express delivery, which can be helpful if users do not live close to a Laundromat or do not wish to take advantage of free WiFi access offered by several Brooklyn Laundry locations.
Clients can use Broklyn Laundry's convenient Internet website to find out more about Broklyn Laundry's laundry services, and to place pre-paid or prepaid orders online. Users can browse the website and place pre-paid orders for washing, drying, ironing, or folding clothes at any of Broklyn Laundry's participating dry cleaning locations. For busy individuals, or those who wish to take a break from the rigors of dry cleaning or do not live near enough to a Laundromat to make it practical, Broklyn Laundry can help.

TIPS How to Prime a Wall
Priming Service near Albuquerque, NM: Take time to learn how to prime a wall and achieve professional-looking results on your painting project. Priming walls is an important step of painting that can increase paint adhesion, improve sheen and block stains. This guide teaches how to prime walls for painting and help produce a uniform finish in your room.
Priming Considerations â If the wall surface is porous â such as the paper backing of drywall on an unfinished wall, masonry or wood â your first coat of paint can be absorbed unevenly without a base coat of primer. â On walls that are already painted with a glossy finish or when using latex paint on top of an oil-based finish, a new coat of paint applied directly on top might have trouble adhering without a coat of primer for it to hold onto. â When painting over a dark-colored wall, a coat or two of primer provides a clean and neutral canvas for a lighter paint color to refresh your room. Because it typically is less expensive than paint, using primer instead of several coats of new paint to conceal dark paint colors and blemishes may lower the cost of your paint job.
Purchase Primer Water-based latex primer and oil-based primer are both suitable for priming interior walls. Latex primer is considered an all-purpose primer and is easy to clean up with water. Oil-based primer also has versatility and is the preferred choice for blocking stains, wood tannin and for covering porous wood surfaces.
Prepare the Wall
Prepare for how to prime a wall by removing any HVAC registers, outlet covers, light switch plates, and nails or other hanging hardware. Then, inspect walls for cracks, holes, dents or other imperfections. â Use a caulk or a lightweight spackling compound and putty knife to fill and repair any holes or imperfections. â Remove excess spackling with the putty knife. Let dry completely. â Use a small piece of very fine 220-grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge to smooth the repaired areas flush with the surface. â Wipe the walls clean with a damp towel or sponge and allow them to dry.
Cover Other Surfaces The next step for how to prime walls for painting is to protect any surfaces that you donât plan to paint. â Use painterâs tape to mask off molding, trim, windows and the ceiling. â Cover the floors with a drop cloth to protect them from paint drips and splatters. â Move furniture out of smaller rooms. In larger rooms, move furniture to the center of the room and cover the pieces with more drop cloths.
Dampen Roller or Brush Priming Service near Albuquerque, NM: It is difficult for dry rollers and dry brushes to absorb primer. Dampen your paint roller or brush to get off to a fast start. Use water if applying latex primer. For alkyd- or oil-based primer, use paint thinner or mineral spirits. Brush out the liquid on a clean piece of cardboard to remove loose bristles. Squeeze out excess from a roller by rolling on cardboard or a towel. Cut-In Corners and Spot Prime
Roll on the Primer
Sand Primer
COST
Primer Cost
Priming Service near Albuquerque, NM: While it is entirely possible to paint over paint, some colors and types of paint do better over a primer, or a material that prepares the surface to receive the paint. If you are switching types of paint, such as going from oil to latex, the primer can help ensure that the new paint will adhere without cracking or peeling.
There are a few types of primer, and they are directly related to the type of paint you will use, as well as the surface you are painting.
Oil-based primers are good for painting on wood and work with both oil- and latex-based paints. They can help prevent stains from bleeding through the new paint. Oil-based primers cost around $30 a gallon.
Latex-based primers are good for drywall and work with latex paints. They can cover and seal small stains. Latex primers cost around $20 a gallon.
Shellac primers are good for wood, and for covering major damage from smoke or water. They can seal in the smell of smoke, as well as any staining. Shellac primers cost around $40 a gallon.
Types of Primer Paint
A primer 3 is essentially a protective layer that you apply before the first coat of paint. If you are painting over an already-painted surface, you may be able to avoid a primer 3 altogether by using a 2-in-1 paint and primer 1 3 product. However, if you are painting a surface that has never been painted before or changing the paint or finish type, it would be a good idea to prepare the surface using a traditional primer 3. Primers 3 should also be used when painting over hard, smooth surfaces like glass or tile. All three types of primers 3, oil-based, latex-based and shellac-based can be used under latex paint.
Type Characteristics Cost
Latex-based Stays flexible even after drying $15-$50/gallon Oil-based Penetrates the wood surface deeply. Covers damage.$17-$60/gallon Shellac-based Provides odor and mildew control $36-$65/gallon
Types of Finishes and Costs
Paints come in several finishes that determine how the final product appears and wears. Do not forget that choosing the right paint finish is just as important as choosing the right color:
Surface Prep Work Before Painting
Surface preparation is extremely important if you want your painting project to have the best possible results. If done correctly, the new paint will not chip, crack or peel before time.
Painters usually find it hard to estimate the cost of prep work accurately. This is because the amount of work required varies greatly from job to job. The more the damage, the greater the amount of prep work required and hence, greater the cost. Dirty walls covered with grease have to be thoroughly cleaned for the new paint to adhere properly. Wood surfaces should be sanded 5 along the grain and dusted clean ($1.80 per square foot). Any cracks and holes in the drywall will also have to have to be repaired ($1.50 to $3.00 per square foot).
Typically, your painter will charge you an additional $300 per room for preparations tasks such as wallpaper removal. Pressure washing the exterior of a standard single-story home will cost you around $275. Cleaning a smoke-stained ceiling can cost you another $100. You may be able to save some money if you do some preparation tasks yourself, such as moving furniture away from the wall, removing pictures etc. Professional painters usually charge around $100 per room if there is a lot of furniture to be removed.
Wall Preparation Before Painting
Priming Service near Albuquerque, NM: The area that you want painted could be made of any number of materials. A professional painter will know what method of surface prep will achieve the best result and ensure the lifespan of the paint. For instance, there are a variety of solvent cleaners that pros use for things like aluminum, copper, Hardie board, or steel. If you are painting stucco 6, especially if it is exterior, it will require 10 to 30 days after cleaning to thoroughly dry before applying paint. Depending on the level of build-up, bricks, mortar 7, and concrete may require power washing to get them clean enough for paint to adhere and stay put. The material, age, and condition of the surfaces to be painted will also dictate the amount of time and work that are required for proper preparation. An experienced professional is the best person to ascertain what prep will give you the best end result.
