Mushroom gummies being sold to promote brain function might instead contain harmful ingredients not listed on the label, including illicit psilocybin, the hallucinogen found in "magic" mushrooms, experts warn in new report.
Five people in Virginia, including a 3-year-old child, have been sickened by the gummies, University of Virginia doctors said.
The gummies claimed to contain the Amanita muscaria mushroom or a proprietary mushroom blend, researchers said.
Amanita muscaria mushrooms, also known as fly agaric, are not classified as a scheduled drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Americans show growing interest in microdosing psychedelics
But lab analysis found psilocybin or psilocin in 3 of 5 different brands of gummies bought in central Virginia gas stations and smoke shops. These "magic" mushroom chemicals are classified as illicit drugs by the FDA, researchers noted.
"While we anticipated that we might find some undisclosed ingredients, we were surprised to find psilocybin and psilocin, knowing that they are scheduled drugs," said researcher Lindsay Bazydlo, medical director of UVA Health's Toxicology Laboratory. "The consumer should be given accurate information about what substances are included in these products."
Other ingredients found in the gummies -- but not listed on packaging -- included caffeine, ephedrine and kratom. Kratom is an herb that produces opioid-like effects and carries a risk of addiction.
"People tend to equate 'legal' with 'safe,' which is not necessarily the case. These products are not regulated and can contain any number of unlabeled substances which, when consumed, can cause undesired symptoms," said researcher Dr. Avery Michienzi, assistant medical director with UVA's Blue Ridge Poison Center.
Four adults seen in the UVA Health Medical Center emergency room in September and November had consumed the mushroom gummies intentionally, researchers said.
But the child, seen this June, had consumed two gummies accidentally.
All were treated and released, but the child required an overnight hospital stay.
Researchers are warning that people who buy these mushroom gummies have no way of knowing what they're putting into their bodies, as the products are unregulated.
"Some packages will have QR codes showing that the products were tested in a lab and contain only what they are labeled to contain," Michienzi said in a university news release. "These have been found to be inaccurate."
For this study, researchers bought three brands claiming to have the same ingredients as the gummies that sickened the five patients. They also bought two other brands claiming to contain "mushroom nootropics" - a trendy term that implies a substance will improve cognition and brain health.
Symptoms caused by these gummies can include hallucinations, racing heartbeat, upset stomach and altered mental state, doctors said. Typical hospital drug screens will not detect the substances that were found in the gummies.
These findings were published Thursday in the CDC publication Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

One of the major reasons i have to buy my Adderall rather than get it from a prescription is that in order to get my prescription I HAVE to consent to random drug tests, and that's a huge fucking violation of my privacy in my opinion. If i refuse these drug tests im not allowed to have the prescription and in order to even get the prescription in the first place i have to test negative for all amphetamines which would require me to detox and in turn not be able to safely drive myself to my doctor's office.
I also had to deal with my psychiatrist freaking the fuck out because I take kratom for my chronic pain due to suspected EDS
— tried to get a diagnosis and because i advocated for myself a little too much I was told by my primary care doc that he had never seen a patient with it so i likely just l needed to see a psychiatrist for anxiety ʘ‿ʘ —
and she freaked out and told me ot was a dangerous opiod and asked if i had narcan and/or needed a narcan prescription and like...... it's just not worth the fucking trouble.
The bottom line is Adderall helped me curb a very serious coke addiction and being treated as if I'm untrustworthy by the medical system has just lead to me avoiding it all together which fucking sucks! I wish I could get my medication legally and safely but the barriers put in place have blocked access for myself and countless others who need it.
It is actually way better for 100 addicts to get their fix on pain pills than a single person in pain go without. I call this the "Torture is bad" principle. You should be able to get the good stuff forever after a single doctor's visit. If you're worried about addicts fund rehab centers and needle exchanges instead of torturing people.

How to Choose a Reliable Kratom Vendor in Canada: A Buyer’s Guide
Kratom, a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia, has gained significant popularity in Canada for its potential health benefits, including pain relief, mood enhancement, and increased energy. However, purchasing kratom online requires careful consideration to ensure quality, legality, and safety. Here’s a guide to help you navigate the complexities of buying kratom online in Canada.
1. Source and Quality of Kratom
The first factor to consider is the source of the kratom. Quality kratom is often sourced from reputable farms in Southeast Asia, where the plant is cultivated under ideal conditions. Look for vendors who provide detailed information about their sourcing practices. High-quality kratom should be fresh, free from contaminants, and undergo rigorous quality control processes. Check for lab reports or certificates of analysis that verify the purity and potency of the kratom. Vendors who are transparent about their testing methods and results are more likely to offer high-quality products.
2. Legal Status and Compliance
Kratom's legal status in Canada can be complex and varies by province. It is essential to stay informed about the current regulations and ensure that the kratom vendor complies with local laws. As of now, kratom is not regulated under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, but its sale and use can be subject to specific provincial regulations. Research the legal status in your province and confirm that the online retailer operates within legal boundaries.
3. Vendor Reputation and Reviews
The reputation of the vendor is crucial when purchasing kratom online in Canada. Look for vendors with positive reviews and a solid track record in the kratom community. Customer reviews can provide insights into the vendor's reliability, product quality, and customer service. Websites like Reddit, kratom forums, and independent review platforms can be valuable resources for gathering feedback from other consumers. Be cautious of vendors with numerous negative reviews or those lacking a significant online presence.
4. Product Variety and Information
A reputable kratom vendor should offer a range of kratom strains and provide detailed information about each product. Kratom comes in various strains, each with different effects, such as red, green, and white veins. The vendor should provide descriptions of the effects, potential benefits, and any side effects associated with each strain. Detailed product descriptions help you make an informed choice based on your needs and preferences. Avoid vendors that offer limited information or vague product descriptions.
5. Pricing and Payment Options
While price should not be the sole factor in choosing a kratom vendor, it is essential to ensure that you are getting value for your money. Compare prices from different vendors to get an idea of the average cost of kratom. Be wary of prices that are significantly lower or higher than the market average, as this may indicate issues with product quality or authenticity. Additionally, check the payment options available and ensure that the vendor provides secure and convenient payment methods. Secure payment gateways and clear return policies are indicators of a reputable vendor.
In conclusion, buying kratom online in Canada requires due diligence to ensure you are purchasing a high-quality, legal, and reputable product. By focusing on the source and quality of kratom, legal compliance, vendor reputation, product information, and pricing, you can make an informed decision and enjoy the potential benefits of kratom safely and effectively.

Kratom in Canada: Exploring Its Potential for Pain Relief and Mood Enhancement
Kratom, a plant native to Southeast Asia, has garnered increasing attention in recent years, particularly in Canada. Known scientifically as Mitragyna speciosa, kratom is often used for its stimulant and analgesic effects. Its benefits, although still under extensive study, present a fascinating array of potential advantages for users in Canada. This essay explores these benefits in detail, focusing on the potential therapeutic uses, the socio-economic impacts, and the legal and regulatory aspects surrounding kratom use in Canada.
1. Potential Therapeutic Uses
One of the most significant benefits of kratom is its potential as a therapeutic agent. In traditional Southeast Asian medicine, kratom has been used for centuries to alleviate pain, improve mood, and increase energy. This traditional use is now being investigated by researchers in Canada and elsewhere for its potential medical applications.
Kratom contains two primary active alkaloids, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These compounds interact with opioid receptors in the brain, which can provide pain relief similar to that of conventional opioids but with potentially fewer side effects. For individuals suffering from chronic pain, such as those with arthritis or fibromyalgia, kratom might offer a less addictive alternative to prescription painkillers.
Moreover, buy kratom powder Canada is reported to have mood-enhancing properties. Users often report improved mood and reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression. In Canada, where mental health issues are prevalent, kratom’s potential as an adjunctive treatment for mood disorders could be significant. However, it's important to note that while anecdotal evidence supports these benefits, scientific research is still in the early stages, and more rigorous studies are needed to confirm these effects.
2. Socio-Economic Impacts
The growing interest in kratom in Canada has socio-economic implications. The plant's popularity could foster a new sector in the Canadian economy, including cultivation, processing, and distribution. This development could create jobs and stimulate local economies, particularly in regions that engage in kratom production.
Furthermore, kratom could provide economic benefits to consumers seeking alternatives to traditional pharmaceuticals. The cost of prescription medications, particularly opioids and antidepressants, can be prohibitively expensive for many Canadians. Kratom, being a potentially cost-effective alternative, could offer relief at a lower price point, making healthcare more accessible.
Additionally, if kratom proves to be an effective treatment for chronic pain or mental health conditions, it could reduce the burden on the Canadian healthcare system. Fewer visits to healthcare providers and reduced reliance on expensive medications could lead to significant cost savings.
3. Legal and Regulatory Aspects
In Canada, kratom is currently legal but not regulated. This legal status creates both opportunities and challenges. On the one hand, the lack of regulation allows for free access to kratom, enabling individuals to explore its potential benefits. On the other hand, this absence of regulation means that there are no quality control measures in place, leading to concerns about product purity and safety.
The Canadian government has not officially endorsed kratom as a therapeutic drug, and its use remains a subject of debate. The lack of formal regulation means that consumers must exercise caution when purchasing kratom products. It is crucial for users to seek out reputable sources and ensure that products are tested for contaminants.
The potential for kratom to be classified as a controlled substance exists, particularly if future research indicates significant risks or adverse effects. In such cases, users and sellers would need to navigate a more complex regulatory landscape.
Conclusion
Kratom presents an intriguing array of potential benefits for individuals in Canada, from its possible therapeutic uses to its socio-economic impact. As research continues, the evidence supporting kratom’s efficacy and safety will become clearer, potentially influencing its status and regulation. For now, while kratom holds promise as a cost-effective alternative to conventional treatments, it is essential for users to approach it with caution and stay informed about ongoing research and regulatory developments. The future of kratom in Canada is still unfolding, and its benefits will likely be better understood as more data becomes available.

Study finds illegal substances in gummies
Tumblr media
Some products recalled after hospitalizations
Mushroom-infused edibles have been under scrutiny by health officials following a series of hospitalizations linked to one brand of mushroom products.
Now new research is claiming that some mushroom gummies on store shelves contain illegal hallucinogens.
A study conducted by experts at the University of Virginia’s poison center and published Wednesday found that some mushroom gummies purchased off store shelves in Virginia contained federally illegal Schedule I substances that were not listed on their product labels.
The UVA’s health centers have seen at least five patients who required treatment after consuming mushroom products, one of whom was a 3-year-old girl who needed overnight care.
Testing found illegal substances in products from gas stations, stores
After a spat of visits to UVA’s emergency department between September and June were all traced back to mushroom gummies, experts at UVA’s Blue Ridge Poison Center took to testing products available in gas stations and smoke shops around Central Virginia, according to a news release.
Commercial mushroom-infused products that are sold legally in the U.S. are not supposed to contain what many people traditionally associate with 'magic mushrooms.'
Tumblr media
Instead, they are generally made with extracts from legal mushrooms, such as Amanita muscaria, or simply with a 'proprietary mushroom blend' that is not fully disclosed on the packaging.
However, of the six packages and five brands tested, four out of six bags across three brands contained psilocybin or psilocin, hallucinogenic substances classified as 'Schedule I' drugs by the FDA, said researchers.
These substances are illegal at both the state and federal levels.
All the tested products failed to list the inclusion of psilocybin or psilocin on the packaging.
UVA researchers say they also found other undisclosed ingredients in some products, including caffeine, ephedrine and kratom, a herb that produces opioid-like effects.
'People tend to equate ‘legal’ with ‘safe,’ which is not necessarily the case.
These products are not regulated and can contain any number of unlabeled substances which, when consumed, can cause undesired symptoms,' researcher Avery Michienzi, the poison center’s assistant medical director, said in a statement.
Tumblr media
'Some packages will have QR codes showing that the products were tested in a lab and contain only what they are labeled to contain.
These have been found to be inaccurate.

I was on Opiates from 14 to 21, and to get off of them I started taking Kratom. It’s technically legal here still, and it doesn’t show on Drug Tests. It’s like a very light opiate and caffine mix.
In 2021 I had to stop taking it to get sterilized because I didn’t know if it was a blood thinner or not. The come-down/withdraw was SO BAD. I felt like I was coming down off tar bro. I told myself “maybe I can just stop for good now that I know it’s having that much of an effect on my body?”
Well they gave me norcos for pain management after my surgery … and when I was out of those I was sitting on the couch playing GTA and was like just “I miss the way it made me feel. I miss how happy and engaged I was on it” > so I yeah I take Kratum again 🤣. I can admit to the addiction because it isn’t an addition that ruins my life or takes all my money.
I used to buy powder and just spoon it under my tongue and wash it down with water (this is the grossest way trust me) , and then I have capsules I take while in public so it’s less jarring. But it got too expensive to buy both so now I just by the capsules.
The grossest and funniest shit is when the capsule pops in my stomach or like if it was in my throat for any reason and I like burp and power just came out my nose like wtf xD looking like a dragon over here 🤣
Anyways it’s legal and sold at smoke shops in every state my job operates in 🤣 so even if I get the position I want, I’m chillin. Idk if I can take it on a plane but I can buy it when I land .
Some people who take this act hella crazy, but I found the right brand and strain and now that’s just me and my personality. It even works still on my medication. But I guess that’s how opiate addictions work huh?

For instance, leafy greens like spinach and kale are high in iron and calcium, while berries are packed with vitamin C and antioxidants that boost the immune system.
Mental Health Benefits
The presence of plants in our environment has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health. Studies indicate that spending time in nature or even having indoor plants can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. The act of gardening, in particular, has therapeutic benefits, providing a sense of accomplishment and relaxation. The natural beauty of plants and green spaces can enhance mood, increase creativity, and improve concentration and productivity.
Medicinal Properties
Throughout history, plants have been used for their medicinal properties. Many modern pharmaceuticals are derived from plant compounds. For example, aspirin is derived from the bark of willow trees, and the powerful anti-malarial drug quinine comes from the bark of the cinchona tree. Herbal medicine continues to be a popular alternative and complementary therapy, with plants like echinacea, ginger, and turmeric being used to treat a variety of ailments.
Kratom: A Natural Pain Reliever
One plant that has garnered significant attention for its medicinal properties is kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa). People in the US military can get away with using some psychoactive compounds other than alcohol. Many people can
I heard they don't test, or at one point never tested, for psychedelics - too expensive and not enough people, plus I don't think it stays in our system long enough to show up on a drug test. So easy to find things on Grindr with Premium by the way, even without uhhh being gay. I always tell straight people (strags) to use Grindr to find people with things, definitely not those illegal things I was just talking about tho cause that's illegal
Uhhhh Dextromethorphan just don't abuse it daily. It's an NMDA antagonist like ketamine and PCP.
Nitrous oxide whippets from whipped cream. So safe, not bad for the lungs at all, as good for the brain as many hallucinogens. Lasts like a minute, goes great with music
Vomiting is like essential for purging some ancestral karmic debt. I always call vomiting on hallucinogenic compounds, or during mania or psychosis, purging for a reason
So many random mildly psychoactive nootropics, herbal extracts, tea, like lol
These mild psychoactive compounds that are so legal, go good together and enhance the effects of alcohol - people have been combined tons of mildly psychoactive and strong psychoactive compounds with alcohol for thousands of years, then people just stopped in the West
Anticholnergic mad honey is used as a mixer in alcohol in Turkey, it's amazing if you use it the right way, terrifying to abuse anticholnergics though. So scary.
I'm planning on harvested Rhododendron pollen this year and committing suicide while tripping balls on Grayanotoxins and a mix of other deliriants, so I can safely enter the underworld under the watch of multiple entities not one who would try to imprison my soul for eternity
Multople opioids, multiple dissociatives, multiple antichonergic deliriants, a mixture of as many as possible - cannabis, psychedelics
Hemlock whenever you're finished and if you haven't died already, somebody else would have to administer it if the person in question can't
Ambien? Yes, especially Ambien, with other benzodiazepines
Dying from one of these compounds gives too much power to certain entities in the afterlife, so I keep making different death recipes
And yeah, I need to add something like Xylazine too, but never just fentanyl, Xylazine and all that random shit in H that one can easily find at drugsdata, where users and addicts can send in samples to be tested. It's disgusting
Or I might just harvest enough and get lucky with eyeballing the dose :) time will tell if I'm good enough at eyeballing rhododendron pollen without dying :)
Oh yeah, rhododendrons are psychoactive and European peasants have used it for a long time - it's in our epigenome, take some, commune with them peasants who accidentally attached a piece of their soul to Rhododendrons
And if you want to not be trapped in all of the lower vibrational domains I just spoke of, take a mix of 5-HT2a agonists too, with weak 5-HT2a antagonists like kratom, or hydroxyzine
Why? Idk, always felt right to me
I also take a low dose of naltrexone
Anyways, I want land in a bunch of states with legal entheogens. My compounds
Charge rich people more money than poor people to access the information I want to help organize, with other people, to start educating people on Psychonautics properly
Helping them explore different states of mind safely, while learning (mildly, they ain't gotta study like that bro) philosophy and science in a way that is easily digestible, something a child could understand for all these grown ass children
With other facilities dedicated towards treating mental health conditions on the same compound
Forest gardens, clear glass pipes with bioluminescent plankton that charges in the sun in ponds and is pumped through every night

Unmasking the Complexities: Uncommon Sources of False Positives in Morphine (Opiates) Tests
While commonly prescribed medications and dietary factors play a significant role in false positives for morphine tests, there are also instances where less familiar substances can lead to misleading results. Uncommon drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, may exhibit cross-reactivity with opiate tests, emphasizing the need for a nuanced understanding of potential interference.
One such example is quinine, a medication often used to treat malaria and found in some over-the-counter products like tonic water. Quinine's structural similarity to opiates can trigger a positive result in morphine tests. Individuals consuming quinine-containing products should be aware of this potential interference and communicate this information to healthcare professionals administering drug tests.
Herbal Supplements and False Positives
Herbal supplements have gained popularity in recent years for various health and wellness purposes. However, some herbal supplements may contain compounds that cross-react with opiate tests, leading to false positives. Kratom, an herbal supplement derived from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, has raised concerns due to its alkaloid content.
Certain alkaloids found in kratom, such as mitragynine and 7-hydroxy mitragynine, may trigger a positive result in opiate tests. Individuals using kratom or other herbal supplements should inform healthcare professionals before undergoing drug testing to ensure accurate interpretation of results and avoid unwarranted consequences.
Environmental and Occupational Exposure
In some cases, individuals may be exposed to substances in their environment or workplace that can lead to false positives in morphine tests. Occupational exposure to substances like industrial solvents or chemicals may result in trace amounts entering the body and potentially causing cross-reactivity with opiate tests.
Healthcare professionals, especially those involved in workplace drug testing, should consider the occupational history of individuals being tested to account for potential environmental exposure. Adequate communication between employers, employees, and testing facilities is essential to identify and mitigate the impact of environmental factors on drug test results.
Metabolism and Genetic Factors
The metabolism of drugs within the body can also contribute to false positives in morphine tests. Some individuals may metabolize certain medications differently, leading to the production of metabolites that cross-react with opiate tests. Genetic factors can influence the speed and efficiency of drug metabolism, creating variability in how substances are processed in different individuals.
Understanding the individual's metabolic and genetic profile can provide valuable insights into the likelihood of false positives in drug tests. Tailoring drug testing approaches based on individual characteristics may enhance the accuracy of results and reduce the occurrence of misleading outcomes.
Cross-Reactivity and Testing Methodologies
The cross-reactivity of certain substances with opiate tests is intricately tied to the testing methodologies employed. Different drug testing methods, such as immunoassays and confirmatory tests like gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), vary in their specificity and sensitivity.
While immunoassays are commonly used for initial screenings due to their cost-effectiveness and rapid results, they may exhibit cross-reactivity with a broader range of substances. Confirmatory tests, on the other hand, offer higher specificity and can help differentiate between substances that may cause false positives and actual opiate use.
Continuous advancements in testing methodologies aim to improve the accuracy and reliability of drug tests. Healthcare professionals and testing facilities should stay abreast of these developments and choose testing methods that align with the situation's specific needs, minimizing the risk of false positives.
Addressing the Legal and Ethical Implications
False positives in morphine tests not only have practical implications in terms of employment and legal consequences but also pose ethical challenges. Individuals who receive false positive results may face stigma, damaged reputations, and emotional distress. Legal and ethical considerations should guide the development and implementation of drug testing policies to ensure fairness, accuracy, and respect for individual rights.
Employers, legal professionals, and policymakers must collaboratively establish guidelines that consider the potential sources of interference in morphine tests. Clear communication and education are essential to empower individuals with the knowledge needed to navigate drug testing processes and advocate for their rights when faced with false positive results.
Strategies for Minimizing False Positives
Mitigating the risk of false positives in morphine tests requires a holistic approach that addresses various factors contributing to interference. The following strategies can be employed to minimize the occurrence of misleading results:
a. Comprehensive Patient Education: Individuals undergoing drug tests should receive thorough education on the potential sources of interference. This includes information on medications, herbal supplements, dietary factors, and environmental exposures that may affect test results.
b. Transparent Communication: Open and transparent communication between individuals and healthcare professionals is crucial. Individuals should disclose their complete medication history, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, to facilitate accurate interpretation of drug test results.
c. Regular Training for Healthcare Professionals: Healthcare professionals involved in drug testing should undergo regular training to stay updated on the latest research and developments in the field. This ensures a nuanced understanding of potential sources of interference and enhances the accuracy of result interpretation.
d. Integration of Advanced Testing Technologies: Incorporating advanced testing technologies, such as more specific and sensitive confirmatory tests, can improve the reliability of drug tests. Research and development efforts should focus on enhancing the capabilities of testing methodologies to minimize the risk of false positives.
e. Individualized Testing Approaches: Recognizing the diversity in metabolism and genetic factors among individuals, adopting more individualized testing approaches can contribute to accurate and personalized drug testing. Tailoring testing strategies based on an individual's unique characteristics may reduce the likelihood of false positives.
The Future of Drug Testing
As technology and research continue to advance, the future of drug testing holds promise for more accurate and reliable results. The development of innovative testing methodologies, enhanced sensitivity, and improved specificity will contribute to minimizing the occurrence of false positives in morphine tests.
Furthermore, increased collaboration between healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and individuals undergoing drug tests will play a crucial role in shaping the future landscape of drug testing. A comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach is essential to address the evolving challenges and complexities associated with drug testing, ensuring that it remains a valuable tool for maintaining public safety, enforcing regulations, and promoting individual well-being.
The landscape of false positives in morphine tests is complex and multifaceted. While common medications, dietary factors, and well-known substances contribute to inaccurate results, uncommon drugs, herbal supplements, environmental exposures, and individual factors further complicate the issue. Addressing these complexities requires a collaborative effort involving healthcare professionals, individuals, employers, and policymakers.
By staying informed, embracing advanced testing technologies, and fostering transparent communication, stakeholders can work together to minimize the risk of false positives in morphine tests. As we navigate the future of drug testing, we must prioritize accuracy, fairness, and ethical considerations to ensure that drug testing remains a reliable tool for its intended purposes.
