As Tony's once close friend and brief roommate, Steve turned Tony's world around in all the right ways until fate intervened and they were pulled in separate directions. Now fresh out of rehab on his 45th birthday and looking to keep from making the same mistakes, Tony reflects on his past and follows his heart to new beginnings hoping that it's not too late to find his way back to Steve in his hopes for a second chance.

James Donaldson on Mental Health - Suicide among college athletes has increased. What's being done to protect them?
by AHTRA ELNASHAR, MIKE GRIFFITH and ANDREA NEJMAN Morgan Rodgers was "full of life," her mother recalled WASHINGTON — As students return to campus and fans flock to watch college sports, there's an emerging conversation about keeping young athletes safe. A recent first-of-its-kind study revealed an increase in suicides among college athletes over the last 20 years. Now, there are new efforts to shut down the stigma surrounding mental health off the field. A recent first-of-its-kind study revealed an increase in suicides among college athletes over the last 20 years. Young athletes dream about their future, often setting their sights on a college campus where they can play their hearts out and join a storied team with thousands of fans. Morgan Rodgers was no different. A standout lacrosse player, she signed on to be a Blue Devil at Division I Duke University. Her mom, Dona Rodgers, recalled her daughter being known as a "great" lacrosse player. But she was more than that. Dona knew her as a fierce competitor on the field, a skilled artist, loyal friend, and loving sister. Morgan Rodgers was well known as a great lacrosse player But Morgan's lacrosse career was shattered in 2018, as a torn ACL and meniscus forced intense surgery and rehab. At the time, Morgan wasn't deterred. "She actually told me, 'I can't wait for people to see my comeback in a year,'" Dona Rodgers said. "She was looking forward to doing that, and she had every reason to believe that she would do it." But something changed. A year after her surgery, Dona told us, Morgan started feeling like she wasn't progressing. She realized she wouldn't be able to return to lacrosse and quit the team. There was a hopelessness that took hold in the shadows that Morgan never shared. She died by suicide in 2019 at just 22 years old. "She was vibrant and funny and she loved life," Dona Rodgers tearfully recalled. "I just wish we could have known." Morgan Rodgers died by suicide at age 22 No one knew until it was too late. The Rodgerses joined a growing group of families whose loved ones, athletes, had ended their lives. In just a two-month period in 2022, five NCAA athletes died by suicide. Among them: a track runner, a soccer star, and a softball player. The losses are part of a tragic pattern ,uncovered by a new study led by Bridget Whelan, a research coordinator for Sports Medicine at the University of Washington. "Each of these statistics is an individual and all of these deaths were preventable," Whelan said. "We can't lose sight of that." #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space. #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleFind out more about the work I do on my 501c3 non-profit foundationwebsite www.yourgiftoflife.org Order your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife: From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy www.celebratingyourgiftoflife.com Link for 40 Habits Signupbit.ly/40HabitsofMentalHealth If you'd like to follow and receive my daily blog in to your inbox, just click on it with Follow It. Here's the link https://follow.it/james-donaldson-s-standing-above-the-crowd-s-blog-a-view-from-above-on-things-that-make-the-world-go-round?action=followPub According to Whelan's study, which looked at suicides among college athletes over a 20 year period between 2002 and 2022: - The proportion of deaths by suicide among NCAA athletes doubled between the first and second decade of the study period, from 7.6% to 15.3% - It's now the second most common cause of sudden death among student athletes - Division I and II athletes had a higher rate of suicides than Division III - The average age of the athletes at the time of suicide as 20 years old - The highest incidence rate was among male cross country runners Click here to view the PDF file. "Athletes are a population that we think of as protected," Whelan said. "They have teams around them. They have lots of positive attention. So if they're struggling with something just as much as the general population in addition to having all of the resources as they do, then this is a major problem." Bridget Whelan launched a study to understand the true numbers when it comes to athlete suicides What's being done to ensure signs are spotted early, and that students have access to mental health resources? The NCAA has published a 19-page document of best practices for mental health among athletes, calling for written plans, training for coaches, annual athlete screenings, and ensuring access to a licensed mental health provider. You can read the full document below. Click here to view the PDF file. Whelan believes the guidelines are a great first step, but there's more work to be done to reduce the barriers between student athletes and critical resources. "Depending on where you are in the country, what your institution's resource availability is, that is all variable depending on your situation," Whelan said. We wanted to know more, so we reached out to 20 Division I colleges and universities to ask about their resources, including how many sports psychologists are on staff, how often student athletes undergo mental health screenings, and whether the schools had recently audited the wait times for students to access help. None of the schools answered our questions. Spotlight on America wanted to know more about the resources available at schools across the country We asked the NCAA if it surveys schools to learn about their policies and resources, and asked whether it planned to turn best practices into requirements. They did not answer our inquiry. Last fall, a bipartisan group of senators introduced federal legislation that would enhance suicide prevention efforts for college athletes. It hasn’t moved out of committee. For Whelan, there's a big obstacle preventing important conversations. "A lot of it is stigma," she said. "There's so much of this study that we are really hoping is going to help contribute to de-stigmatizing, working towards normalizing conversations around mental health and suicide in particular." It's a goal shared by Dr. Erica Force, a sports psychologist at Georgetown University who has been working with student athletes for nearly 20 years. "Historically the culture in athletics is be tough, no pain, no gain," Dr. Force said. "We're trying to change that narrative." Dr. Erica Force has been helping student athletes with their mental health for nearly 20 years She pointed out that new challenges, including social media scrutiny and pressure with 'name, image and likeness' business deals, can exacerbate stress. Fortunately, she said the influence of athletes like Simone Biles and Michael Phelps, who have been open about their mental health struggles, could help promote others to seek help. "They're surprised to hear that they're not alone in how they feel," said Dr. Force. "Part of our job as, as a mental health professional, is instilling hope. And so talking with them about it's normal to feel like this and, and this can be temporary. This isn't always a permanent experience for you." To honor her daughter, Dona Rodgers founded a non-profit called Morgan's Message, now working to foster the very conversations that could have kept Morgan alive through an international group of student ambassadors who are sharing experiences and normalizing conversations about mental health. Rodgers believes it's moving the needle. Morgan's mother, Dona, carries on her legacy by helping others She said she's spoken with people who say they wouldn't be here without the help of Morgan's Message. "It's scary to think that you could be responsible for helping someone that was in a deep dark place," Rodgers said. "But it also feels really good, and it feels like we're doing something that matters." If you know someone who is struggling with thoughts of suicide, call the crisis hotline at 988 or click here for more information. Photo by Pixabay on Pexels.com Read the full article

Central City Concern plans to purchase Lolo Pass, the chic hotel and hostel that opened in 2021 on East Burnside Street, and turn it into a 60-bed drug and alcohol treatment facility.
This would be super cool if it goes through as planned.
A while back, Washington County, which contains a large chunk of the Portland metro area, announced plans to open a pretty comprehensive program for treatment and rehab.
Washington County has succeeded where Portland and Multnomah County have so far failed in preparing to open a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week, drop-off center to treat different levels of addiction.
I would love for the two most populous counties in the state to get into a "who can provide the best services" contest.

Finding the Root at Northpoint Washington
In the United States in 2014, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) found that 43 million Americans suffered from some kind of mental illness.
During that same year it was found that 20 million Americans over the age of 18 had an alcohol or drug use disorder. Out of those 20 million with a substance use disorder, 8 million also had a mental health disorder that needed treatment.
In the six years since then, it is believed that those numbers are far higher.
Co-occurring disorders can make it so difficult for people to overcome their addictions, and that is why at Northpoint Washington, we have taken it upon ourselves to help people dig deeper into their symptoms and find the possible root of their addiction.
How Do We Do It?
It is a completely fair question to ask how we here at Northpoint Washington are able to dig deeper and find underlying mental health disorders within a person with substance use disorder’s behavior.
By using dual diagnosis treatment, we are able to do what not all addiction treatment facilities are equipped to do. Many cannot handle the challenges that come with patients that have co-occurring disorders. Because of this, many Americans are forced to seek separate treatments. During addiction treatment and recovery, by missing any underlying mental health disorders, the patient is failing to receive the full benefit of putting themselves out there.
In many instances, as told by the numbers provided by SAMHSA above, people struggling with substance use are facing an underlying psychological disorder that is leading the person to seek substances for coping. Physiological disorders can affect everything about a person, especially the way a person sees themselves and how they see the world around them.
Similar to the question of “which came first, the chicken or the egg?”, the same can be asked about mental health and addiction. Regardless of the answer, however, it is clear that they feed into each other and serve to strengthen each other along the way.
For those suffering from both an addiction and a mental health condition, serious consequences can arise as the two spur each other on. The two adding to one another is a cycle that needs to be broken in order for recovery to occur. As a person that turns to substances for relief from their mental health illness, that person will rarely find long term relief as opposed to seeking professional treatment. The substances in many cases will exacerbate symptoms of the mental health disorder.
That is why it is important to turn to people like us at Northpoint Washington to resolve both of these issues at the same time and find the root before any more damage is done.
What Else Does Northpoint Washington Provide?
While dual diagnosis is an important part of recovery and treatment, it is not the “be-all and end-all” for every person that walks through the door of Northpoint Washington. Finding an underlying psychological disorder is just part of the treatment process that comes with being at our facility.
At Northpoint Washington, we take an integrated approach to treatment for addiction. Our facility, which has 22 beds, is a modern inpatient facility where people are treated for dependence on substances and are able to withdraw from their dependence. All of this, while also learning about psychological factors that may be at the root of their addiction.
The program often starts with a seven-day detox period in which clients are able to have medical professionals oversee them for the period of time in which their body and mind rid themselves of the dangerous toxins taken on by substances and alcohol.
Following detox, our clients enter a 21-day stint of rehab, where the individualized treatment plan shines through in helping to set the client up for the best chance of continued recovery.
Following rehab, transition begins into the aftercare stage of recovery. At this point, you will move back into your natural environment, taking the skills and knowledge gained during your 28-day stay in the facility with you.
Take the First Step
If you or a loved one is currently struggling with addiction, regardless of if you believe there are underlying factors in the addiction, now is the time to reach out.
At our facility here at Northpoint Washington, we are prepared to hear from you through our live chat, a message, or a phone call. All of these methods of contact are welcome and will put you in touch with the highly skilled and experienced professionals in our facility.
You can still get help, and recovery is possible. Take the first step today.

Understanding Substance Abuse Treatment
Substance abuse is defined as taking any drugs, or being under the influence of them for a period of time. Treatment basically refers to the whole array of services, ranging from identification to intervention, analysis, diagnosis, counseling, treatment and rehabilitation of people with drug problems. The term is used to refer to drug and alcohol treatment facilities, rehabs and other centers. Substance abuse is considered an addiction in most instances. In addition to drug abuse, drug dependency is also considered an addiction, but not as physically addictive as drug abuse. This type of addiction can include alcohol dependence, but it is more common that alcohol dependence. There are various types of substance abuse and addiction, and a wide variety of treatments available to treat each of these problems. Alcoholics are treated with a wide range of therapies and programs, ranging from outpatient and inpatient care, to intensive outpatient and hospital-based care. Some of these treatments are offered by government agencies and private organizations. Inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment are the two most widely used and recognized types of treatment. Both forms of treatment are offered in rehabilitation centers, residential rehabs, long-term care facilities and outpatient clinics. Some of the outpatient treatment offered includes detoxification and maintenance therapy. Detoxification helps a person to get rid of the cravings and unwanted behaviors that lead to substance abuse. Maintenance therapy helps a person to deal with the cravings and other behaviors, which could lead to substance abuse and withdrawal symptoms once the individual has stopped the drug or alcohol. There are several types of drugs, substances and behavior disorders that can lead to addiction. These include alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, inhalants, nicotine, alcohol inhalers and other stimulants. Each of these substances has its own characteristics and effects and may cause certain addictive behaviors and addictions, such as alcoholism, heroin, cocaine, inhalants, and other stimulants. In addition, some people may not suffer from any particular physical or mental health problems, but they may have a genetic predisposition to alcohol abuse and addiction. Such individuals should be treated with extra care and respect. Substance abuse and addiction can also occur within the family, and this is known as intra-familial substance abuse. substance abuse occurs when one member of the family is suffering from a substance addiction. This is usually caused by a parent or sibling. Another reason is when one of the parents or siblings uses drugs or engages in risky behavior, such as unprotected sex or unsafe sex, and shares their drug use with friends and family. Royal Life Centers Arizona Other inter-familial substance abusers include spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends and boyfriends, who are involved with illegal substance sales. alcohol treatment centers in spokane Substance abuse and addiction can also occur on a psychological level and this is called systemic substance abuse. Systemic abuse occurs when someone has an addiction to one or more psychotropic substances, which includes benzodiazepines, ecstasy, heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, alcohol, barbiturates and other sedatives. Systemic abuse can occur over a period of time without the need for medication, or it can be brought about by an addiction to alcohol or another substance that has been around for a long time. This type of abuse has many negative side effects and can result in withdrawal symptoms. The severity of the symptoms varies greatly and often requires intensive treatment. There are several reasons why people may develop substance abuse and addiction. Some people are simply genetically disposed to this problem. Others may experience trauma or emotional stress that leads them to engage in substance abuse and addiction, such as childhood sexual abuse or neglect. Sometimes, a person develops a physical addiction to a drug, such as alcoholism or drug use. There are various types of substance abuse treatment. Physical treatment typically involves detoxification, which helps the person to get off all forms of alcohol or drug use, and reintegrates the person into society. Detoxification also helps the individual to cope with cravings for those substances. Counseling can help a person to deal with the physical, emotional and psychological issues that lead to substance abuse. Psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and group therapies are also available for substance abusers. Individual needs vary widely, depending on how severe the substance abuse is and on what they want to accomplish. There are many different treatment options and there are many centers, such as inpatient rehab facilities and outpatient clinics, which offer both residential and inpatient treatment. Many of these centers, such as alcoholics Anonymous, can be found online.

BIOGRAPHY:
The Rawlins only had one child. A son they named Chandler Walt. Walt after the infamous Walt Disney, for whose company his father worked. Chandler’s dad was an animator, and the beginning inspiration for the young Rawlins boy’s artistic passion. Even before he could write his own name he was painting. Colors on canvas without rhyme or reason that just felt right. His father tried to push him into animation too, but Chandler didn’t want to make art for anyone but himself. Quickly his aspirations blossomed far beyond the achievements of his father, and his wide blue eyes drew wonder from the likes of Picasso, Kandinsky, Dalí, and Duchamp. For the first time in his life he thought he’d found himself, only to lose his dad. Mr. Rawlins didn’t understand Chandler’s work. It was very avant-garde, and quite often pushed the boundaries of what was appropriate or made people comfortable. You’ll never sell a single piece, his old man had said, and I’m okay with that Chandler retorted back.
In the summer before his first year of high school, on a family road trip to the Redwood’s of California, Chandler and his parents were in a car accident. His father died on impact, and his mother was permanently disabled by the accident. Chandler’s father’s passing away was a difficult loss for the teenager. There were many unresolved feelings towards his father, both as a boy and as an artist. All his grief came out in his art that would, later, go on to be the first piece of work Chandler ever sold. Shortly after the accident and his father’s passing, his mother moved them back to her hometown of Baltimore Maryland to be close to her side of the family. It was the first time in his life he’d ever experience some semblance of siblings in his cousins. They made life in a new place fun, and a brooding, loss stricken boy a little less so.
For college Chandler majored in Fine Arts at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. It was like a dream. All day, every day, engrossed in his work. Studying the creations of great artists, past and present, while honing his own craft. His work continued to remain unique, although not unsellable like his father had forecast. Chandler sold a lot of his work. After obtaining his masters in Fine Arts from Boston University, he used the funds to move to Paris and begin a research program at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. For as hard as he worked he had way more fun. Both in art and in love. His life a revolving door of woman who continually inspired his work. Until they didn’t anymore. His mother would be disappointed to see her well raised son a womanizer, but she was many thousands of miles away, and he was a slave to his art. Which demanded a muse.
However much like a home away from home Paris felt, Chandler missed his family. His mother was getting older. Many of his cousins had begun to start their own families. He wanted to be there to see it, so after obtaining his PhD he accepted a teaching position at Georgetown in Washington D.C. as an associate professor in their fine arts department. The university provided him funds and a space to continue his work. During a model call for the university he met the first American woman to really inspire his work. A spitfire named Brooklyn whose chaos was a crippling kind of addiction. She brought out the worst in Chandler, yet the best in his work. Their nights together were a blur of drugs, alcohol, and sex. It wasn’t a surprise to anyone but them when Brook ended up pregnant. A baby changed everything for Chandler. He immediately straightened up and did his best to keep the mother of his child on the same path.
Although, his best would not be good enough. A month after their baby’s birth, a daughter named Elodie, Brooklyn was off the wagon again. Her reckless behavior coupled with a newborn and work was exhausting, but Chandler never gave up on her. Not until she was arrested. It was the worst night of his life. Brook had their daughter for the night while Chandler attended a campus event, but she drank too much and chose to drive. The pair crashed into a utility pole. When he heard the news he was instantly taken back to his own car accident, and what it had cost him. Immediately, he cut all ties with Brook and sought full custody of their daughter. The courts granted it to him. With Elodie’s mother in rehab there wasn’t much of a fight, and even after she got out. She at least knew Chandler was what was best for their daughter. He bought a house for himself and Elodie in Deanwood. A modest home in a neighborhood full of other families. It’d been a long time since he’d lived in suburbia, but he found a way to acclimate. For her, for his daughter, for Elodie.
Life as a single father and full time professor didn’t allow Chandler the opportunity to date. Not that he really wanted to, anyway. His ex left the worst kind of taste in his mouth. So, despite all of his mother’s many attempts to set him up, Chandler stayed single. Until he met a woman, Carolina Weiss, at one of his art galleries. He should’ve known better the moment he saw her, the moment his brain started turning over portrait after portrait of her, but something in Chandler couldn’t control it. The way a new muse took hold of him was powerful, and he pursued her for weeks. They were all passion and paint. In their short time together, Chandler churned out an entire collection, but she was wild and free. Not at all like the chaos Brook brought into his life, but something entirely different. Something more potent and addicting, and Chandler got scared. The relationship ended and Carly left the city, but he still thought of her often.
In the fall of 2020, Chandler’s daughter began kindergarten. They hadn’t heard from Brooklynn in several years. With the help of his mother and immediate family the absence was well filled, and they considered themselves happy. It didn’t even occur to Chandler how lonely he was until he saw her again. The woman from the gallery, Carolina Weiss, now a student in one of his Spring classes. It complicated things immensely, but it felt like kismet. After all the time that had passed. He wasn’t afraid anymore and bided the semester before asking Carly on a date. Just being around her has reinvigorated his muse, and Chandler is back to popping out paintings left and right. He can’t get enough of her, but she’s also not the only woman in his life that requires his attention.

H E A D C A N O N S
benjamin was born as the only child to regina and david morgan, a museum curator and ceo respectively in manhattan.
benjamin was raised in close proximity to his cousin madeleine spencer, to the extent where benjamin considers maddie to be more like a sibling to him than a cousin. this came from both of their parents busy schedules and similar lifestyles which led him to be brought up in this manner.
benjamin would like to think that his parents were happily married, but it was only as he got older that he realised the family set up that he had grown up with as a child wasn’t the same as everyone else’s. nevertheless, he figured that it worked for them as it was, and he still considers himself to have had a good childhood.
spending as much time in the spencer household as he did, benjamin sparked a genuine interest in medicine, looking up to his uncle, madeleine’s father, as a role model and idol for his future career in medicine.
benjamin was athletic in school, actively taking part in boxing and baseball. he hoped from early on in high school that he would be able to get into a good school on a baseball scholarship so he wouldn’t need to focus as hard on his studies, but a torn rotator cuff in his sophomore year quickly killed that dream, and he came to the quick conclusion that he had to get his head in the books.
as much as he would hate to admit it, he knew that his parents pulled a few strings when it came to his offers for college, but the decision ultimately came down to him. during this time he had watched madeleine begin to spiral out of control, the concern for his cousin and arguably best friend only growing with each day that passed.
it was during this time that benjamin turned down the offer from harvard that his father had swindled for him, choosing instead to stay closer to the city in order to be nearby while madeleine got the help she had promised her parents she would get.
he was thankful for this decision as the realisation that she hadn’t been getting help came about following amelia shepherd’s overdose. while madeleine was in rehab, benjamin made a point of visiting her as much as he could, skipping classes if he needed to to make sure that she felt supported. she was basically his kid sister after all.
as madeleine got clean, benjamin took the mcats, scoring high enough to be accepted into john’s hopkins off his own back this time. as madeleine was seemingly doing well, benjamin decided to move that little bit further out, knowing he would be close enough if she needed him to return.
it was during this time that the two established their bi-weekly phone calls, no excuses allowed, his way of keeping an eye on her completely.
benjamin moved that little bit further for his residency to mayo, just as madeleine moved to switzerland for her masters. it made sense, he was happy for her and continued to adjust his schedule to make sure their phone calls went ahead as they needed to, suiting her schedule over his.he would often stay awake until the early hours of the morning just to speak to her.
his residency was fairly smooth sailing, despite a period of switching between services as he was indecisive about what specialty he was going to go into. he had always had his heart set on cardio like his uncle, but it only took one case with the ent attending to have him hooked.
as he came to the end of his fellowship, he debated the idea of having a second specialty (he’s a bit of a show off like that), but a nagging feeling inside of him told him something more important was coming.
his calls with madeleine weren’t like they used to be, years of regularity and consistency seemed to be falling apart, with nothing that he could do from where he was. he wanted to believe that this was part of the recovery, that she didn’t need him the way she used to, but he couldn’t be certain.
the night of amelia’s intervention, benjamin received a frantic phone call from madeleine and he knew then that things were not good. whether she was high or just drunk he couldn’t have been certain at first, it was only as she spoke about everybody leaving her the he snapped into action. she’d fallen off the wagon, and he’d be damned if he was going to stand by and let it happen.
benjamin packed a bag and hopped on the first plane to seattle, ready to hold an intervention of his own if he needs to. as far as he is concerned he’s here for maddie and nothing else.

turned thirty five cos that’s how birthdays work !!
after maddie decided to get clean, benjamin went with her to new york to ensure she fully embarked on her recovery. as much as seattle had only meant to have been a means to an end for benjamin, he found himself wanting to return.
he’s been keeping a low profile at the hospital, but is just kinda keeping things ticking over. he’s still ben.

{ MASTERLIST }
"I want you to picture your addiction sitting in that empty chair across from you."
Lola, who'd just come out of a week long detox, and had finally stopped feeling like death warmed up, stared at the empty chair in the unbareably beige office of the rehabilitation center's therapist.
"Can I get some water?" Lola rasped, craving a cigarette and knowing she wouldn't get one. The therapist, an aging woman a kind smile and a clinical stare, obligingly passed her a bottle of water. Lola really did want to take this whole thing seriously, but picturing her addiction as a person sitting across from her made her feel like an idiot. There was no-one there. No-one else had made her do any of this, why should she try and blame someone who doesn't even exist.
"At least you've acknowledged that this is self-driven, that's good, that's very good; self awareness is key. You are in control of you life, Lola," the therapist's voice is sweet, and Lola can't help but scoff.
"I wish I was less aware of myself, that's why I do all this shit," she snorted, and it's meant as a joke, but it's too honest by half, and the therapist frowns.
"Is that why you don't want to picture your addiction? Are you afraid to picture yourself?"
Lola knows she's not in the best shape, currently eight weeks pregnant and terrified of what to make of it, dead sober - pun intended - for the second time in six months, painfully aware of every terrible decision that has lead her to this exact seat.
"What do you see in that seat, Lola?"
"Nothing," Lola says flatly, and takes a long sip of water. The therapist sighs deeply, and Lola scrunches her eyes closed for a moment, forcing herself to play along, "I see myself."
"What does she look like?"
"Like me," with an implied eyeroll and obviously, Lola sits a little lower in her chair, trying desperately to ignore her growing nausea. She takes another drink.
"Like you now, or does she look like a different version of you?" The therapist asks, and Lola hears the scratch of a pen against paper. Lola takes a deep breath, another drink, and stares at the empty chair. If Nikki were here, he'd roll his eyes and make some sort of snide comment, and Lola would laugh, and her discomfort would ease. Maybe that's why they're in seperate facilities.
Except when she looks, when she really tries to see something, she can't see just one version of herself. She sees the night she was drugged while out with Vince and Razzle, sees herself that night, weak and crying to Nikki, making a vow to try and get better but not sticking to it. She sees herself chain smoking in Tommy's dressing room the night she tells him she loves him, so afraid of the pyrotechnics in the show that she tries to escape it by drinking, by letting herself focus on anything else. She sees herself, fully dressed in a hotel swimming pool, unsure of how she got there, halfway through a bottle of vodka, hoping she'll forget how and why she's telling Mick about her scars.
She sees a kid in a Queen crop top, asking for her first taste of alcohol instead of explaining, when Nadine looks at the scars on her back with concern.
"Younger me, I guess," Lola's voice is soft.
It had been escapism without having to go anywhere, because Lola was never using to escape her reality as much as she was escaping herself.
"What's she saying to you?"
"That it's easy," Lola doesn't realise there's tears in her eyes until they start to spill. She's looking at herself, laying on the pavement in her own sick, and blood from her broken nose, as the paramedics are hauling her into an ambulance, and she can't remember how she got there, which kind of makes it worth it, even if she's dying. In her memory, she's smiling, "it's easier than anything else in the world." Lola's voice cracks.
"Why are you here, Lola?" The therapist asks gently, and Lola's lip trembles.
"I keep hurting the people I love," she admits. Her voice catches in her throat and she has to look away from the chair. She thinks she's going to be sick, and its mostly the pregnancy induced nausea, but part of it is the painful self-awareness.
"I need to go-"
"Lola -!"
"Or I'm going to throw up on your nice carpet," Lola snaps, getting to her feet, stumbling from the chair, from the room, out to the nearest bathroom. The therapist calls to her again, but at least she doesn't try and stop her. Lola hates it here.
The facility is somewhere in Washington state, with more medical equipment than a rehab center is usually known for, but the patients here need extra medical attention, like Lola and her pregnancy. They take care of her, give her everything she needs, make sure she's eating healthy and drinking enough water and exercising, with daily therapy sessions, and weekly group therapy that she's kind of coming to dread.
One of the girls in the facility, another one of the patients, remembers Lola, but Lola doesn't remember her. She'd spent the night with Lola and Tommy in New York, and she won't stop apologising, even when Lola tells her she has nothing to apologise for.
"It was one night, it's okay, it happens to the best of us -" Lola brushes her off, but the woman is still apologising, almost crying.
"I smashed a bottle over your head, I tried, oh Lola, I think I tried to glass you, I was in such a bad place, I'm so sorry -"
Lola doesn't even vaugely remember what she's aluding to, but it also definitely sounds like something that would happen to her. All she can do is say that it's okay, and pretend like she cares. She's doing that a lot lately, pretending like she feels remorse. She'd probably need to feel guilt over the things she's done to feel remorse, but seeing as how she barely remembers her worst offenses, she can't bring herself to feel remorse for them. But her therapist ends up catching on.
"You told me you're here because you keep hurting the people you love," the therapist says with a level patience, "so if you're not sorry for the things you've done to the people you don't remember, would you change to stop hurting the people you love?"
"For them, I would," Lola agrees easily, which surprises her therapist with it's certainty. And then, unprompted, "but if they don't want me when we're all sober, that's - dude that's the nightmare scenario." She laughs, but it's devoid of humour, and her gaze is glassy as she contemplates. There's a lot of fears that Lola had been running from, that she's terrified to voice, and it's all she can do nowadays to distract herself from the reality of her biggest fear growing inside of her.
"Do you love them because of the drugs and alcohol?"
Lola falters, shaking her head quickly.
"And Nikki, you've told me you've loved him since..." the therapist checks her notes, "since you were fifteen; was it because of addiction back then?" Again, Lola shakes her head, and the therapist asks, "then why do you love him?"
It takes Lola a long time to finally find the words for her feelings, the things she's known for years but never been able to voice.
"He never gives up; he's never given up on me, and I love him for that, but it's... it's more than that, of course it's more than that. He's the most talented man I've ever known, and I mean no disrespect to the rest of the band, but Nikki... his mind is unparrallelled, and I'm always in awe of him. I really mean that; the music that lives in his head, the ideas and stories and everything, I've never in my life heard anything like it."
"I didn't ask what you love about him, I asked why," the therapist says quietly, and Lola's eyes go wide and uncertain, and she falls into a contemplative silence. When she finally speaks, it's hesitant, it's quiet, it's so unlike herself.
"Because..." she pauses, looking at her hands, "because he's the only person in the world who understands me, honestly, like really understands me," she fidgets, pushing back her cuticles with her nails, "I miss him," she adds, a quiet aside, and bites her lip, but the therapist knows to keep quiet, that Lola's not done, "I love him because he's the soft place I land when I fall, every time," she hesitates, a smirk tugging at the edge of her lips, "which I know is sappy as fuck, but despite everything, he still loves me, he still catches me. He's my home, you know?" She nods, bringing her hand to her mouth to chew on her thumb nail, finally looking at the therapist, "he's my home."
"Will those feelings change when you're both together and sober, do you think?"
"My feelings won't change," Lola says, specifically, and the therapist gives a gentle smile.
"I'm going to play you something," she says, and Lola watches as she pulls a cassette tape out of her desk drawer, along with a small cassette player, "you're aware that I record all of our sessions," the therapist reminds her, and Lola nods, chewing her thumb nail, intrigued, "well I recieved this from the facility that's been treating the band -"
"They're together?" Lola asks, eyes wide, incredulous, as if almost relieved, "are they okay?" And the therapist seems pleased that that's her first reaction, her first question, and reassures Lola that they're fine.
"I'm worried about her, of course I'm worried about her, I miss the fuck out of her, the rest of us are here, she should be too -" Nikki's voice comes filtering out of the cassette player, and Lola almost bursts into tears at the sound of it. The unfamiliar voice that joins his must be his therapist.
"She's in a medically-focused facility that's giving her special care and attention -"
"Because of the baby," Nikki sounds like he suddenly understands, and there's a sudden knife-twist of guilt in Lola's chest, but she stays silent, "I just don't want her to be alone through that, family's always kind of terrified us, so I don't want her going through that shit alone." Tears are welling in Lola's eyes, only made worse when Nikki admits; "I'm just kind of fucked, because what happens when we both get out of here and she realises I'm just the piece of shit who ruined her life -"
"You didn't," Lola sniffles, cutting in even though she knows he can't hear her, but thankfully, the therapist gently tells him that he didn't. Nikki tries to protest, but the therapist cuts him off quickly, won't let him dwell in that sort of negativity, and instead asks why he loves Lola, just like her therapist had asked her only minutes ago.
Nikki is quiet.
"Like, the real answer?" He sounds hesitant, too honest and too raw, and the therapist prompts him with gentle affirmation, "I could say anything; you wouldn't know if I was makin' shit up."
"Why would you lie? Who would that help?"
"The real answer... I don't like talking about that shit with people I barely know. That's my shit."
"Nikki, you don't have to say anything you don't want to."
Nikki's silent for a very long time, and there's the sound of shifting, like he's trying to get more comfortable, and then he clears his throat.
"She puts up with our shit better than anyone else," but his heart's not in it, "even after all these years, she still loves all of us bastards, and..." he sighs, but his voice turns soft and gentle, "and she makes me feel safe, okay?" Finally, he sounds honest, and sounds like he's mad about being so honest, "when I'm with her, I feel safe being myself, no bullshit, no stunts, no fear, just... it's just us, and nothing else matters. And I'm fucked if she doesn't want me after everything, but I wouldn't blame her, fuck, after everything she's gone through I wouldn't blame her one bit."
"You're his home too," the therapist tells Lola, who's covering her mouth with one hand, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Does he... does he know I'm hearing this?" She asks, choking on the words. The therapist nods.
"Once he'd said it, and his own therapist suggested sending the tape for you to hear, he seemed more than accommodating -"
"I need him to hear what I said too, I need him to know- I need him to know," she was sobbing, though the guilt from his earlier words, and she hears herself babbling, "but there's - oh fuck - there's only one problem, and you can't - you can not - send this part, please. Turn the recorder off, please." And the therapist sits up straight, on alert as she hesitantly turns off the recording device on her desk, and Lola's trembling hands find her stomach.
"Lola, what's wrong?"
"I love Nikki so much," Lola's adament, "but the baby's not his."
