Just finished watching Druck / Skam Germany Season 1 for the first time. Yes, I know I am late to this, but here we are.
Honestly the first few episodes didn't quite get me, it all seemed to be too purposely educational - how Amira's culture was referred to so much, the gynecology story etc. (but maybe that's just me being ~10 years older than the target audience lol)
And one thing that really bothered me, the characters are supposed to be around 16/ 17 years old but how do they look (and most of the time also act) so mature? I think it would've been more realistic to me if they were portraying university students rather than 11th graders.
But damn, the end really got me hooked for more! 😍 Hanna's monologue at the beginning of the last episode felt so raw and emotional, I loved how Mia supported Kiki and confessed about her ed, and how they teased Matteo having a crush on Jonas.
aaand ofc I really loved the music, gave me a huge throwback to 2018!

I love kinda gross ways of describing kissing. You couldn’t have stuck your tongue down the throat of somebody who loves you more. The first time I tasted somebody else’s spit I had a coughing fit. The word snogging. It’s weirdly satisfying to me in a way I can’t explain

it’s so difficult when what you’re looking for in a tv show or movie just isn’t quantifiable. i’m definitely not looking for a copious amount of sex scenes or something particularly steamy. i want to watch something that shows the intimacy and the strength of the bond that can form between two people, which is kind of really difficult to search for. it’s that element that makes marianne and connell so compelling, and what all the best skam seasons embody. i’m literally just going to list the shows and movies which i think fit this feeling, please feel free to add to it.
• normal people (obviously)
• skam and it’s remakes (season 2 of wtfock, and season 5 of druck are some of my favourites)
• isi and ossi (i have not clue why this movie isn’t more popular, it’s such a good romcom)
• veronica mars (not the detective part, but the whole progression of LoVe)
• shameless (but specifically ian and mickey)
•the OA
• Bones (the chemistry between booth and bones could set something on fire)
•young royals
•heartstopper
•heartbreak high
•mixte 1963
•bridgerton (but only s2 and queen charlotte, s1 gives me the ick)
•buffy the vampire slayer (whatever spike and buffy have going on is very compelling)

Some thoughts on Heartstopper s2:
Overall, I liked Tara and Darcy's arc, but I wish it had been set up better. I got the impression in s1 that Tara and Darcy have been dating forever, maybe even since they were like 13-14, and I just can't believe that the ilu issue hadn't come up yet. Particularly on a show like this when even platonic friends will say ilu to each other all the time. I think a better way to set up the sl would've been:
show Tara saying ilu to Darcy without expecting reciprocation, portrayed like it's something she does all the time.
show Tara longingly watching Nick and Charlie saying ilu to each other.
have Tara say ilu to Darcy now with the hope/expectation that Darcy will say it back.
everything else takes place exactly as it did on the show.
Similarly, I loved Tao and Elle's arc. I was really looking forward to their getting together after s1, and throughout the season I was 😍😍😍😍. I just didn't connect with Elle's mood after the movie date. I guess I myself would've been disappointed, but not to that extent, and so that part didn't work for me.
While I'm glad that Imogen will be wlw (more in a sec), a part of me wishes she hadn't been just to compare the way people reacted to her character in s1 vs s2. Because really, Imogen acted exactly the same in both seasons (it was the way the dude treated her that changed), but I can't imagine people would have the same reactions towards her with Nick vs towards her with Ben.
I do hope Imogen will be a lesbian, mostly because of the lesbian lighting. That being said, I wish it was Sahar who got the self-discovery arc. In the end though, I want a wlw to get the Heartstopper self-discovery arc, and I look forward to whatever happens with Imogen (and Sahar!).
I was also looking forward to Isaac's arc and it didn't disappoint. I think Isaac is the first explicitly ace character (maybe also aro?) with a self-discovery arc I've watched, and I was really interested in how it was going to be portrayed. I love Isaac's actor's smile, I think he's so cute.
Olivia Colman put her whole pussy into that family dinner scene, whew! Nick's mom's role wasn't that large, but she stole the show with her facial expressions and her whole "I just don't know wtf is wrong with this man!" attitude.
I feel sorry for Ben despite his whole evil Mark Owen thing, but I also like that Alice Oseman chose not to redeem him. I am mighty tired of bullies and abusers getting half baked redemption arcs (hi Druck s7 and s8), and it's plausible for Ben to just not be there yet. I think Heartstopper as a comic and show has people being lovely more often than not. So I think it's a brave choice not to redeem Ben, and let us give him a happier ending in our mind if we so wish.
And on that note I really appreciate that Heartstopper allows its characters to call out bullies, abusers, bad parents, and tells its audiences they don't have to forgive bad treatment if they don't want to. For a show that's been so criticized for being wholesome (i.e. sexless) and, for that reason, not ~challenging~ enough, I think allowing its characters not to forgive is actually a subtly subversive choice. I think just about any other teen show would've made Charlie allow his former bullies into the party because the ringleader had been a bit nicer in the Eiffel Tower. Imo it's details like that that show an actually queer person is behind the show, compared to the shows produced, written or directed by straight people.

Matteo - Druck S3
Tumblr media
So I’m not at a point where the Druck Experience Bot has started on his season yet (yaaaaay Saturday!!  I can’t wait!) but I couldn’t let today go by without saying something about this anniversary.  I remember being so wary of this whole thing.  I’d tried other remakes and didn’t vibe with any of them (including Druck - S1 had felt too similar when I first met it) and I only tried this season because of the rumours about David.  But when I saw this shot used with the discordant note in the music in the way it was I started to relax.  I felt like I could like this kid.  His vibe was different from Isak’s and I liked that he was clearly a different person.  I didn’t properly fall head over heels for this show until episode 3, but even this early in the season I felt like I could,  And look at me now: still obsessed 4 years later!
Happy 4th anniversary, Druck s3 fandom.  It was a great time and I miss it but at least we can revisit this beautifully imperfect season again and again whenever we want.

Just a thought, idk if you've watched the newsreader, but I always feel like whenever I watch shows with bi characters and they have a relationship with someone of the opposite sex and realise that they are bi because they see someone of the same sex and is like yeah they're attractive, I kind of hope that they either stay or are in the relationship with the person of the opposite sex, because I think in some ways we don't see that enough but e don't really have much representation on tv anwyay so i guess we just make do with what we can get
Hello anon,
I haven't watched newsreader no but unfortunately it is far too common for bi characters to realise they're bi or be revealed as bi and then date person of the same gender for the rest of the show. While I do think the representation is getting better there's still a lot that needs to be done.
I feel like most bi characters can be put into two categories:
1)bi men and women on queer shows who are dating a character of the same gender with an ex of an opposite gender.
ex. Lindsay (Queer as Folk), Delphine (Orphan Black), pretty much in every thai BL show an attraction to women is mentioned or being worried about
2) bi women (interestingly, it's almost always women and very rarely you have bi men in this category) who are dating our main male character but are revealed to have had a girlfriend in the past or date a girl for a short period of time.
ex. Cece (New Girl), Marissa (The O.C), Keeley (Ted Lasso), Mia (Druck)
But like i said I think it is getting better. Though it is true that bi characters with same sex partners are still prevalent, I think it's little bit due to the nature of which shows are willing to introduce bi characters (shows with queer focus) and also at what part of the journey they introduce them. Because it's often true that if a person believes they're straight and suddenly realise they're bi there often does come a period where you heavily fixate on the same gender just because you suddenly realised you can. Also often times shows don't have the time to show multiple past partners and develop them in depth. So what I search for more than simply who they end up with is how their story is being told and if I believe there's a bi writer behind it or if they've done the adequate research and are telling bi stories that feel true to me. And I think there are some good recent examples of it.
You can think what you want about the cop aspect of the show but Rosa Diaz was a great bisexual character. She's known she's bisexual but we as viewers only found out later in the show (which with her worked since she was known to be very secretive and even her coworkers knew very little about her at that point) and then went on a journey with her on how to tell the rest of the team and her parents. We went through the biphobia she faced from her parents and her own frustrations at trying to explain it to them. We've seen her with or heard about several girlfriends as well as boyfriends.
I also remember how pleasantly surprised I was when Jane the Virgin first introduced a bi male character as Jane's love interest and they actually talked about it and talked about Jane's concerns about it which I've never seen before. The straight panic of oh no am I gonna be good enough for you then? It was very well done imo. And then when couple of episodes later Petra started having feelings for JR, we as viewers already had an idea of bisexuality. And while Petra's new discovered bisexuality led her to ending up with JR it didn't downplay her feelings and attraction for Rafael or her ex hookups and boyfriends. She also verbalises that she's bisexual several times. Her journey in that way felt true.
I already talked about how wonderful Nick's journey in Heartstopper is. Both in the comic and the show. S1 of the show was all about Nick's bisexuality journey. From crushing on Charlie and being all confused about it, to trying to figure out what he'd actually call his sexuality all the way up to telling charlie that not only that he likes him but that he LIKES liking him. And then coming out to his mom. Idk how much they'll change in S2 but Nick's journey is not yet done. But in the comic as well as in the show we go on the self discovery journey with him and we see him identify as bisexual all the time and talks about past crushes etc.
And I mean we also have the wonderful clusterfuck in Eleanor Guthrie and James Flint. They're particularly note-worthy because they're not exactly positive good characters. I mean Eleanor just keeps making the absolute worst choices purely because of her romantic affairs whether it's because of Max or Charles Vane or that Woodes Rogers guy. And I mean Captain Flint declared war on the british empire because he thought they killed his boyfriend and then again started raiding and ransacking all the british colonies for killing Miranda. They're fucked up but that's why I love them. It's not the stereotypical bisexual villain. 'Cause they're not villains. They're more like antiheroes. They're complicated and shady but that's what we need. We need characters all over the board. We need diversity even within the bisexuality.
So yes I think we need more character. We need characters that realise they're bi but still stay with their partner of an opposite gender. We need characters who think they're gay only to realise they're actually bi by falling for a a person of an opposite gender (seriously I know quite a few people to which this happened and yet you never see it on tv). I'd also appreciate if we got bi characters of various shapes and with different disabilities or illnesses etc. Just make it all the more diverse. That's what we need.

If I'm not completely mistaken, at least for the 1st gen girl squad actresses druck was their first acting job (except for Milena aka Mia)
1st gen of druck Lea(kiki) and Mia(milena) had both already been in the industry. Milena was also a little older than the rest of the girls if i remember correctly
Hanna (lilly) had no experience and was the main for s1. Jobel (sam) also had no prior experience.
Anais (laura) was scouted at an industry talk/presentation from what I was told by someone who has spoken to her about how she ended up on wtfock. She had no prior experience acting.
