drivingsideways33 replied to your post: “Hi Annie! When did you first start writing fic? You seem very...”:
i feel like my fic author persona and my rl persona are completely at odds with each other? i'm so NEEDY as an author, in a way i am just never in other aspects of life. Sigh.
Maybe it’s because it’s okay be needy when it comes to fic writing, the way we can’t be in RL matters? Or you’re an onion and have ~layers~

monday, wednesday, september for the fanfic ask :)
monday: do you struggle with the ‘boring’ parts of writing?
Oh gods yes. Absolutely, every day, the boring parts are the WORST. All of those little continuity checks, and the bits that just aren’t sexy to write, like people going to and from places and trying to figure out bloody logistics of every plan these people have, is exhausting.
wednesday: name a fic which you have posted which you think is underrated?
Good Fortune Attend and its sequel, With Mirth and With Sport. I promise that they’re not even slightly bittersweet, they’re just good fluff featuring young James and young Thomas and a lot of fun.
september: share a comment or review which still warms your heart?
I have two, actually, because both of them made me feel great for different reasons. The first was from Cup of their Deserving when someone said the following:
“I really started thinking about slavery much more after reading your fic, than I’ve ever thought about it after history lessons and such.”
I’m not going to lie - I felt amazingly humbled by that sentence alone, and I’m really glad that my fic made someone really think about a thing they’d never truly considered the horror of before in a way that a history book couldn’t or wouldn’t do.
The second one was from Reclamation and came from someone who had just lost a family member. In the middle of all of the chaos and heartache that comes with that kind of loss, they took the time to tell me that reading the new chapter of my fic had helped them find some peace and distraction, even just for a few minutes, and that also meant the world to me because that is the point of writing and of being in general. We are here to make the world better, and if I can do that in some small way with my writing, then that’s what I want to do.

@drivingsideways33 replied to your post: So The Untamed Do you want to write the fic * nudges you hopefully *
Maaaan I have so been hardcore considering it. Between grad school, work, and the writing I’m supposed to be trying to sell (hah), the hard part is finding the time. T__T ETA: just realized there’s an actual reply button on notifications now. Welcome to my castle. It’s the rock I live under as I age and technology outstrips me.

Hi! love your gifs for queen sugar. If you're taking requests, could you gif (1) the scene where vi, charley and ralph angel talk about whether ernest murdered those men? i love that scene so much, esp Aunt Vi's dialogues. and (2) Darla confronting Nova about the book (ps I understand if you're overwhelmed by requests, no pressure, and only if you feel like giffing these!) Thanks again for all the sets!
Hey there. Thanks for being so patient! You can find those sets here and here.

a réagi à votre billet
“Let it sink in that we, the people of India, chose with overwhelming...”
I realised in 2014 that if I wanted to save even a semblance of my professional relationships I would have to get off FB ( was never on Twitter). Watching people I thought were safe turn into hate spewing and justifying bigots was An Experience. This time I just feel such despair.
Fortunately, I had stopped using FB way back in 2012. It was already a few years that I was using it, and got tired of it. So thankfully, I never saw the filth spouted there. But hey, now you don’t have to login into filth, filth is delivered to you personally via WhatsApp. Amit Shah in on record saying that BJP created 2 whatsapp groups of 1.6 million people each (yes each) to make anything viral. To non-Indians, Amit Shah is basically as evil and as cunning as Putin imo. Campaign against Rahul Gandhi wasn’t just about corrupt dynasty, it was a systematic screaming how incompetent he is. People are brain bleached into thinking just enough to believe BJP and vote for them.
I too despair. Because against the behemoth of social media and the actual subservient Foxian news media, I have no idea how to make people even realize what they are doing. I have received multiple WhatsApps now about how Godse was the hero who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi the antinational. I mean, the family whatsapp groups have been forwarding it for a while now, but now it’s like, a thing de jour. Oh yeah, and apparently, now Modi is the savior described in Nostradamus prophecies. What, you don’t believe it? I received it on whatsapp so it must be true.

i don't even go here, but that last bit made me laugh
Ha, thank you! I want to write this character’s pov more, but I’m afraid I can’t sustain his particular brand of humor over any length of time.
inclineto replied to your post:
One: only Julius could ever get away with calling Richard histrionic. Two: nooooooooo, that would make it all so much worse!
I do think that this is a bit of narration which could only ever be from Julius’s perspective re: both one (ahaha yes) and two. Clearly, only someone who did not live through round one of Richard/Dominic would think their problems would be solved by getting back together.
(Also, while Julius’s emotional insights are generally well-taken, I do get the feeling that he doesn’t quite get Richard and Dominic.)
#to be fair to him however i'm not sure that any of the ricardians do#the two of them are for each other even long after they are no longer each other's#inclineto#drivingsideways33#society of gentlemen#replies

for the end of year asks: 1, 9, 14 , if you want to answer any or all of those :)
thanks pri! 💜
1. what did you learn about yourself this year?
i thought that i wouldn’t be able to write a novel, and it turns out i was right, i still don’t know how to write a fucking novel jfhghjhhhh (gonna keep trying though)
9. best television series?
hahaha so on my private twitter i’ve been talking about this, because i was looking at the guardian’s top 50 tv shows of the year, and before they revealed their #1, i was looking at #2-50 like “WHERE is killing eve!!!! OMG WHAT IF IT’S THEIR #1!!!”
AND IT WAS!!! and then i ranted about how they said it had an “obliquely sapphic vibe” because i don’t know WHAT is obliquely sapphic about villanelle/eve, it’s very textual in my opinion. but still! v cool that they ranked it so highly! it’s my #1 too :D it’s just so thrilling and sexy and funny and the dynamic between villanelle and eve is everything!! sandra oh is amazing.
honorary mentions: one day at a time, harlots, kim’s convenience. also daredevil s3 for being WAY better than i could ever have imagined.
14. favourite place you travelled this year?
already answered here! (:

1 & 15 for the book asks meme :D
1. book you’ve reread the most times? I’m actually not a big rereader (anymore; I was when I was a kid so the real answer is probably like the early hp books or whatever my fave dear america book was) but ones can remember reading multiple times recently: master & margarita, the odyssey, animal farm, great gatsby...
15. recommend and review a book. mm I guess I'll talk about my fave book I've read so far this year, lincoln in the bardo by george saunders. it’s utterly gorgeous & the way he weaves together so many different voices, like a broken chorus, is incredible. it’s heartbreaking, it’s moving. it’s inventive. I love that he gives voice to ghosts & to grief. this is not a great review but it is a great book lol

I, S and X for the fanfic ask :)
I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?
hmm. tough question - not really? Most of the things I enjoy writing and reading don’t really count as guilty pleasures, although I suppose recovery from trauma fic could be counted.
S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?
Definitely “we thought Character A was dead, but they’re totally alive and here’s how.” Although at this point I’d like to point out that Black Sails and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey both pulled that which makes it not really a fandom trope but regardless - fanfiction is for resurrections and reunions!
X: A character you enjoy making suffer.
I don’t know that I ENJOY making any characters suffer - well, ok, except Alfred Hamilton. And Peter Ashe. but that’s not me making them suffer, it’s me inventing more and more ways for them both to die. So - I guess James McGraw?

drivingsideways33 replied to your post “i would do a LOT for a pov on what's going on with...”
Write the fic.ficlet. Whatever.
drivingsideways33 replied to your post “i would do a LOT for a pov on what's going on with...”
Also, yes to all of this.
Immediately after writing out that post I wrote out:
“This won’t change anything,” Thomas says, looking at her with his bright, clear eyes.
“I know,” she says, and smiles at him, and counts the lies on both hands.
Which is a decent ao3 summary, but not a great jumping-off point for a larger fic; nonetheless, I will persevere.

for the fic meme, 10 and 11. :)
thanks for the ask!!
10. name a fic that you’ve read more than once. or maybe five times. or ten.
*whispers* here’s where i admit i don’t tend to reread fics all that often. i usually read a fic once, then if i’m gonna leave a comment i might reread it again immediately or at least soon after, but after that i pretty much never reread. i do reread bits of fics sometimes, but that’s it. this is because there’s just way too much good fic out there and i just… want to consume as much of it as possible?? so it’s hard to find any time to reread fics. i don’t even have enough time to read all the new stuff that i want to read!
THAT SAID, i have actually reread quite a few fics by @shirogiku, in particular The Captain’s Wife, or Dangerous Liaisons (in which captain james mcgraw is married to miranda when she meets lord thomas hamilton, who is unmarried), and Rose Water (a lovely maxanne fic where they take a bath together)
11. what fic do you wish you had written?
so many!!! christ. um. like i don’t really wish to have written any of the fics that are out there because then i wouldn’t have got the joyful experience of reading them but i do admire some of them so much i wish i just had the ability to write something similar of the same calibre.
consider them both, the sea and the land by @deathnoting is the kind of fic i wish i could write. something plotty and immersive that feels SO true to the show + exquisite characterisation, and just the most incredibly vivid and careful detail that makes the whole fic feel like something tangible. GOD, it’s so gorgeous.
armed with the past and the will by @keensers because oh my god her madi is to DIE FOR, and her fics are so sharp and smart!!!
and into what it will be changed by @sea-changed MY DREAM OT3 FIC, i still can’t believe it’s a real thing that exists i love it so much, it’s like. perfection. everything i’ve ever wanted.
YOUR OWN GODDAMN A Savor of the Heart!!!!! god you write the ot3 so well!!!!
other fics that when they were posted and i read them i curled up into a ball of agony for a week afterwards going “I WILL NEVER WRITE AGAIN BECAUSE WHAT’S THE POINT WHEN I WON’T EVER WRITE ANYTHING THIS GOOD”: Quicksilver by my Nemesis @jadedbirch and Until death it is all life. by @old-long-john
intimate fic ask meme

drivingsideways33 replied to your post “Say, do you have watched "the handmaiden"? i always value your opinion...”
i have mixed feelings about the sex scenes? I felt the two versions we get of the their first sexual encounter make perfect sense within the story, but the last "bell" scene did feel gratuitous in the sense that I didn't think the scene was *necessary * for us to understand that these women, esp Hideko, have reclaimed their lives and bodies. It felt a bit like a repetition of a point already made well, with a hammer, when the rest of the film is kinda subtle in many ways but it's also a ymmv kind of thing, i think.
It is a subjective thing, yes, and I guess it worked for me because it was clearly a homage to the ending of Fingersmith, where Maud (/Hideko) turns the exploitation of having to read erotica from childhood into earning a living out of writing erotica. That’s how, in a twisted way, she takes back her agency. And that’s how I make sense of the sex scene with the bells? I think it is also of import, in relation to the first time we see Hideko reading erotica about lesbians (using those balls) to a male audience... because in the last scene, we see her act it out, with someone she loves, without any men watching or forcing her to do it. That’s the point of it, I think. Does the entire sequence bask in its eroticism? Yes. But do I think that was the sole intent of it or if it was entirely gratuitous? No.
#drivingsideways33#idk Pri i'm not wording it well but i don't see the whole bell sequence as kinky deviancy (like many say) or unnecessary#i think it served a purpose#but like you said: ymmv#the handmaiden#v replies#sex mention/
