So, we start chatting and I say, ‘Mr. Nair, I’m one of the partners at the Calabogie Motorsports Park.’” As Ford VP of Global Product Development at the time, and one of the main architects of the GT program, Raj Nair knows all about Calabogie Motorsports Park. Calabogie is a small town with a ski hill about 150 km Northeast of Ottawa, just off the Madawaska River. The circuit itself is an up and down, side to side tarmac ribbon ride through the woods in the middle of nowhere; it’s also where Ford and Multimatic had chosen to clandestinely develop the GT, with Scott Maxwell laying down thousands of laps before the car even debuted publicly. Not many people know this, but Ford doesn’t win Le Mans in 2016 without Calabogie Motorsports Park. “So, I ask him, how is this car going to be allocated? And he says, ‘Richard, we haven’t decided that, but just leave your name with us, speak to the guys at Multimatic, and when the [application] process is announced, we’ll contact you.’” Despite his peripheral connection with the car’s development, Richard was skeptical of his application being accepted. “I filled it out as best I could, but I must admit that maybe my application wasn’t in the top percentile because there were a lot of holes in there.” But the story gets even more incredible following L’Abbe’s approval in September 2016. Richard needed to have his order finalized by February of 2017, except, the Ford GT Concierge Service couldn’t send him one of their splendid ordering kits because they weren’t ready yet. “They called and said we don’t have the kits yet, but we want you to order the car with the finishes you want, so would you be willing to come down to the Ford New Product Development Center in Dearborn?” Richard was the first person on the next flight to Detroit. I finally bought one of her forget-me-not necklaces as a birthday present to myself, and it remains one of my favourite pieces. Here are a few things I asked Lee about what she does:

Valentin: What do you think got you started making the things that you do?

Lee: I realized a few years ago that making has always been my default way of supporting and expressing myself.  When I was in elementary school I would make it my summertime business every year to make a mountain of art and crafts to submit to as many categories as humanly possibly at the local fair, with extra attention paid to the bigger cash prize categories. In high school I took private sewing lessons from one of my mom's friends and made all of my own prom dresses and ridiculous wide leg jeans.  From high school I went on to Sheridan to study textiles formally, and from there my silk screening and embroidery work followed.  I took a hard left two years ago when I moved to the country, dropped my textile focus and moved into an entirely new creative area of fresh flowers and resin. This came from moving into my grandma's house and taking over her beautiful but neglected rose garden, where I became so inspired by the magic of flowers, and a pull to work with them creatively.

Valentin: What has your professional journey looked like over the years? Would you describe it as a meandering path, a knife fight, a bit of both, or something else entirely? Do you view your personal and professional journeys as intertwined, or completely separate?

Lee: I would say that my professional journey is closer to a meandering path that is definitely intrinsically linked to my personal life and struggles.  Being in charge of a business isn't something that comes naturally to me—making the work is where I get my fulfillment and joy—but obviously both halves are needed to succeed in making things as a source of income.  I've found that my business succeeds and suffers right along with me.  If I am personally having a hard time, it is nearly impossible to motivate myself to be creative.  If I'm personally flourishing, it's in these times that I'm able to see my business with rose coloured glasses and take it to new places and make bold decisions with confidence.  There have been times where I wished so much that my work and my personal life could be separate, how much easier would that make my path to 'success'! But over time I've learned to see it all as a beautiful dance that is always working to teach me things.  It is often in the lowest, darkest times that my subconscious is working out the plans for me to enact once the clouds clear.  It's been a very important lesson to learn that even when we aren't doing the work, there is work being done within.

Valentin: What kind of education, internships, or mentorships have you pursued?

Lee: My educational path started with one misguided year of Art History & English studies at a large and faceless university, where it became painfully obvious to me that I needed to be working with my hands and needed to be taught usable skills.  I went to Sheridan College for the Crafts & Design program to study textiles.  After graduation from Sheridan I went to NSCAD in Halifax to finish my BFA (they allowed me to apply my Sheridan credits toward the degree, leaving me with 1.5 years to finish) where I broadened my studies to Interdisciplinary so that I could investigate illustration and book arts in addition to textiles.  Since leaving NSCAD I haven't sought out any further studies, mostly because I've never been sure where I fit into the scheme of things, the hard binaries of art mediums.

Valentin: What is it about yourself that you find helps you the most in making your work?

Lee: I think my nostalgic tendencies are an incredibly strong linking component in all the work I've done. Lee: The most important advice I've received was early on, and it was to not be afraid to show your work and get it out there.  When creative folk are first starting out there is often this fear of talking or showing off your ideas for fear that someone else will take that idea and run with it.  I've learned how baseless this fear is, and how important it is to know that everyone has the same ideas all of the time; very few ideas are truly one of a kind. The most important element of the idea is that it’s YOURS, only you will make the aesthetic decisions to execute this idea, and that alone makes it unique and worth pursuing.

Valentin: What is your workspace like? As part of your practice, you collect a lot of found material—dried flowers, stones—and I am wondering how you organize and take care of your collections?

Lee: My work space is divided up into three spaces currently: first there is the built-in bar in my living room that I have made into an art and craft supply heaven, cupboards stuffed with all the lesser used supplies, my Hungarian textile collection, and all of my business files, topped with a three-sided counter for spreading out and working.  The second space is upstairs in the sun porch where my 'messy' table is—a work surface for pouring resin and silk screening. My third workspace is outside in the garden, where I've been cultivating a collection of small preservable flower varieties to use in my resin work.  I keep my collection of preserved flowers in airtight labeled containers to extend them as long as possible.  I keep the gemstones I collect to include with the flowers in a little labeled bead organizer.  Organization and labeling is key when I'm working with so many moving parts, and keeping a schedule of flowers and their blooming periods is essential.

Valentin: What is your typical day like?

Lee: My typical day depends so much on the seasons: in the winter when the garden is dormant I am working on the business side of things—organization, ordering findings, making order forms, creating my wholesale business, updating my website (still on the to-do list...).  In the spring and summer I am more in work-mode, so I wake up as early as I can and head right out to the garden before anything else.  I work for 1-2 hours while listening to podcasts, and then I come inside, get cleaned up and start my creative day.  There are a lot of stages to this work, so I could be working on preserving flowers, pouring resin, sanding, gluing, packaging or mailing, depending on the outstanding orders I have to fill.  Working from home and be tricky, as I have a tendency to get tunnel vision and just work away at a task regardless of the time.

Lee: Taking on new tasks can be so intimidating. I've found I often need to sit on an idea and think it over for months, working out all the parts, the supplies I'll need, and the aesthetic I am in pursuit of.  I had been thinking of working with resin for over a year before I finally sat down and poured for the first time, and I was just electric with a mix of excitement and fear of failure.  Aside from a couple of Google searches and one old book, I taught myself about resin from top to bottom, and I am by no means done learning.  It's humbling to take on a new medium and learn all of its ins and outs, and the pride that comes from solving a problem is immense.  After a few months pouring resin turned from scary to just plain exciting and it remains my favourite part of the process.

Valentin: What do you think you will be making when you're 90?

Lee: I can only imagine!  I have no question that this is my life long pursuit—I will always be making and trying to express myself through objects.  When my work was more focused in embroidery and fine hand work I used to worry that I wouldn't be able to be creative in this way when I was older and my motor functions decline, and I would worry that without those skills I would be nothing.  But after switching to my current resin work it made me realize that there are endless mediums to inspire me, and that regardless of the physical limitations that naturally come with age, I'll find a way.

“Sometimes people don’t want to admit everything that is happening with them, especially seniors. I just think it’s easier to withhold information when talking on the phone than it is when it’s face to face.”

She also worries about virtual care leaving behind seniors and others who either don’t feel comfortable with technology or can’t afford to be connected.

THE FUTURE

A CMA-Ipsos report released in August found Canadians are generally optimistic that technology will improve health care over the next 10 years, through better access and more timely and convenient care. But they have concerns about how it is implemented, with 77 per cent citing losing the human connection of health care, 75 per cent worried about their privacy, and 71 per cent concerned about opening the door to private health.

The true power of virtual care isn’t in apps and gadgets, say experts, but in reorganizing the medical system so that individuals are empowered to manage their health better, there is much greater connectivity among all points of care, comprehensive electronic health records are easily accessible for patients, and there are a range of targeted and timely solutions that give people the information and guidance they need to make good decisions.

“I think we’re at the beginning of a huge innovation cycle and health care is just entering the space that online retailing, and Airbnb and Uber, and so many others have been aggressively rolling out for a number of years,” says Dr. Ed Brown, founder and CEO of the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN).

Health care is more challenging because it’s public, it’s heavily regulated, and is literally about life and death. But consumers are driving the demand for choice, nonetheless.

OTN piloted a program in which about 30,000 patients could text questions to their primary care provider. Brown says 99.9 per cent of patients said they would use it again, a satisfaction level he has never seen before. And the 275 physicians involved found it to be an efficient and effective way to communicate with patients.

OTN, which became a part of the province’s new health agency Ontario Health as of April 1, now has funding to grow the program to about 1,000 physicians.

How virtual health care has stepped in and performed in this time of crisis will not only be a massive testing ground but also a source of data, research and lessons for a generation, says Brown.

“I think people are getting a pretty good feel for what it can and can’t do. Obviously, it’s not doing surgery and it’s not giving you a needle or taking your blood, but certainly for an awful lot of things, it’s not only adequate, it’s even better.”

MLB Is Increasingly A Father-Son Game

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Within a 30-foot radius in the Toronto Blue Jays’ cramped spring training clubhouse are locker spaces adorned with the nameplates Guerrero, Biggio and Bichette. Any baseball fan of the 1990s and early 2000s would recognize these surnames: Vladimir Guerrero, Craig Biggio and Dante Bichette combined for 20 All-Star Game appearances across two decades. But these lockers belong to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Cavan Biggio and Bo Bichette, who have combined for zero big-league at-bats to date. They are on the cusp of the majors, prospects invited to camp in the sleepy Gulf Coast town of Dunedin, Florida.

But expectations are high for the Blue Jays’ young trio. Guerrero is the No. 1 prospect in the game according to most evaluators. Bichette is considered a top 20 prospect. And Biggio dramatically elevated his prospect status last season. Another son of a former big leaguer, pitcher Mark Leiter Jr., was also in the clubhouse before undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Second-generation prospects are not limited to the Toronto system, either. ESPN’s Keith Law has San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr., another legacy, as the game’s No. 1 prospect, while Pittsburgh’s Ke’Bryan Hayes — son of Charlie — is also a top 20 prospect. And numerous legacy prospects are or will soon be contributing to their big-league clubs: Adalberto Mondesi (son of Raul) is expected to be in the Royals’ starting lineup, Lance McCullers Jr. is a fixture in the Astros’ rotation when healthy, and slugger Cody Bellinger (son of Clay) has already earned an All-Star nod for the Dodgers.

If it seems like the kids of former big leaguers are taking over the sport this spring, it’s because they kind of are — they’re making the majors at rates far greater than the general population.

Whether it’s Guerrero, Bichette, Biggio or another prospect, the next child of a major leaguer to reach the majors will set a record for legacy debuts in a single decade. Entering 2019, the 2010s (44 debuts) are tied with the 1990s for most such debuts, according to Baseball-Reference.com data analyzed by FiveThirtyEight. The share of debuts by sons of major leaguers this decade is the second-highest on record (2.1 percent), and could perhaps challenge the 1990s record (2.3 percent) by the close of the season.

But it’s how the progeny of former players are reaching the pinnacle of the sport, and at increasing numbers, that is misunderstood.

“There’s a lot of misconceptions,” said Zach Schonbrun, author of the “Performance Cortex: How Neuroscience Is Redefining Athletic Genius.” “Everyone thinks two great athletes are going to come together and they are going to have a kid, and that kid is automatically going to become a superstar. It’s not so easy.”

Imitation game

When Cavan Biggio and his brother, Conor (who was drafted by the Astros in 2015), were in elementary school, Craig Biggio picked them up from school when the Astros were at home. They traveled straight to Minute Maid Park for the Astros’ pre-game batting practice. During games, Cavan and Conor didn’t spend their time in the family section; rather, they confined themselves to the Astros’ concrete bunker of a batting cage in the bowels of the stadium. They would hit off the tee and play games in the space, only vacating it if an Astros bench player came to get ready for a pinch-hitting at-bat. They observed the swings and collected the balls swatted into the nylon netting. The only other time they would pause is to watch their dad’s at-bats when their attention turned to the bubble-screen TV attached above cage.

Like his dad, Cavan has a two-handed finish in his swing. This is not a coincidence. “The only thing he would say to me, mechanically, was ‘Two-handed finish, two-handed finish,’” Cavan said. “I still hear it today ‘Two-handed finish’ OK. I know [Dad]. I got it.”

He’s not alone in mimicking what made his dad so successful. The swing of Bo Bichette is also similar to his father’s.

It’s not just at the plate, too. In Pirates camp, Hayes is renowned for his defensive ability at third base. “My mom says that our mannerisms on defense, the way we stand and stuff like that, are exactly the same,” Hayes said.

Driveline Baseball’s Kyle Boddy studies athletic movement patterns and is on the vanguard of player development in baseball. In speaking with Boddy for reporting on the “The MVP Machine,” he said the greatest advantage in being the son of a major leaguer is in mimicking movement patterns. After all, early-life imitation is key in motor learning. He cited the throwing motion of Astros’ McCullers Jr., which closely resembles that of his father’s.

Boddy suspects the children of major leaguers succeed at abnormally high rates. With the available data it’s difficult to know exactly how their success rate compares to the general population, but there are suggestions that it’s far better.

The proportion of U.S. high school players compared to domestic-born major leaguers has stayed more or less the same. In every year since 1978, there have been almost exactly 500 high school players in the country for every one U.S.-born major leaguer, according to Baseball-Reference.com and National Federation of State High School Associations data. That’s a success rate of about 0.2 percent. We don’t know the total number of major league progeny playing baseball, so we can’t make a direct comparison. But, over the last 30 years, the sons of majors leaguers have accounted for 2 percent of all debuts, and that number has gradually risen throughout the game’s history.1

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Hayes’ pedigree played a role in moving him up their draft board, selecting him in the first round in 2015. Huntington is also confident the Blue Jays are “baking in” legacy considerations to their evaluation sauce.

“There’s a lot to be said for seeing how things are done at the highest level whether it’s motor learning or whether it’s how people carry themselves,” Huntington said. “They see the drive, the work ethic it takes.”

What’s also interesting about Hayes, Biggio and Bichette is not just what they observed but how they were taught.

“I never really worked on mechanics,” saya Hayes about his father’s tutelage. “ At a young age, I just kinda learned the right movement, the fundamental stuff.”

Said Bichette: “We didn’t do a lot of drills.”

Boddy is wary of burdening pitchers with too many internal cues. Similarly, Schonbrun says implicit learning is the most effective way to acquire a skill.\

“Ken Griffey Sr. probably didn’t show his son how to wiggle his bat and find that perfect arc for his swing,” Schonbrun says. “I’m guessing he probably told Ken Jr. ‘Here’s how you should get from A to B,’ and Ken developed that swing on his own. … In a lot of ways, that’s a better way for the brain to learn rather than following really detailed explicit instruction.”

‘Specialization’ is not a dirty word

A common experience shared by Biggio, Bichette and Hayes is that they all grew up with a batting cage in their backyards. They all had access to travel baseball, equipment and facilities. Tim Lee, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, believes that those factors are perhaps the greatest advantage in having a professional athlete for a parent.

“The relationship of the model to the learner is one of the important moderating variables in observational learning,” Lee told FiveThirtyEight. “My hunch, however, is that this plays a far less important role than does the availability of practice facilities and instructional opportunities.”

While those spaces speak to the financial edge that also comes with being the son of a big leaguer, the cages, lessons and tools allowed them to be exposed to not just high-level motor patterns but enabled them to log thousands upon thousands of reps.

In the backyard of their Houston home, Hayes estimates he took “anywhere from 400 to 500 swings a day.”

Said Bichette of life in the backyard swing incubator: “At one point in my life we would go into cage and count at least 200 swings.”

For his fielding work, Biggio said his dad taught him to throw a lacrosse ball off a wall to create unusual hops to improve his hands. Hayes was also taught the practice and still tosses a lacrosse ball off of a wall when killing time in the hallways of minor league clubhouses. It’s one reason he projects as having a 70-grade glove on the 20-to-80 scouting scale.

When Bichette was a freshman in high school, he was also an excellent tennis player, but his parents urged him to choose one sport. Dante Bichette understood the importance of specialization.

While there has been research and concern about sports specialization leading to injury and burnout, Schonbrun notes it’s difficult to excel without it. Florida State professor Anders Ericsson attempted to quantify the hours of specialization needed to become an expert in 1993, which Malcolm Gladwell later dubbed the 10,000-hour rule in his book “Outliers.” Schonbrun said specialization is “necessary.”

“From a cognitive and neurological standpoint, the more you can focus on one task, the more practice that goes into it, the better you are going to be,” Schonbrun said.

Baseball-Reference.com‘s database contains father-son pairs to play in the majors but it does not include minor league family history or other family connections. That means the advantage in growing up around the game is probably even more considerable than we’re showing here. Consider the case of another consensus top-five prospect this spring, a player who could be the next teenager to reach the majors: Tampa Bay’s Wander Franco.

While he seems like a natural, dominating older competition at age 17 last summer, he is also the youngest of three brothers — each named Wander Franco — who each play in the Giants organization. His father, another Wander Franco, pitched in the minor leagues. His uncles Willy and Erick Aybar played in the majors. His neighbor growing up in the Dominican city of Bani was Cleveland Indians infielder Jose Ramirez.

Franco IV was exposed to elite-level motor patterns when he was young, but he was also around people obsessed with baseball. There was a dry river bed near his neighborhood in Bani and that became their ballpark. They used whatever scrap they could find to create bases. They wound up a sock to use as a ball.

“It was all games, every day,” Franco told FiveThirtyEight through an interpreter.

The Rays gave Franco, the No. 1 international prospect in 2017, a $3.85 million bonus. “One of the things that helped us get comfortable with that level of investment was that he had grown up around the game,” said Chaim Bloom, the Rays’ vice president of baseball operations. “You see a lot of guys who have a tremendous amount of skill but don’t know how to apply it on a baseball field. The way that Wander was able to do that as an amateur was really, really rare.”

Franco might seem like a natural, but his story might be more about nurture than nature.

Genes do play a role in success, of course. Bichette said the “bat speed” he shares with his father cannot be taught. Biggio says he has better than 20-20 vision and so does his brother and father. There are things Guerrero Jr. does with that bat that are assuredly tied to genetics.

But in some ways they are all lesser athletes than their fathers. Biggio is not nearly as fast as his father. Guerrero Jr. is not built like his father listed at a 6-2, 250 pounds, where his father was 6-3, 235. As a shortstop, Bichette has a much smaller frame than his father, who was a slugging corner outfielder.

While they are the sons of former professional athletes, there are more talented natural athletes that never reach the major leaguers. Their advantages go beyond genetics, and for a variety of reasons, the advantage of being the son of a major leaguer is growing.

SA: How did you get your start in music? RT: I started singing in choirs as a very young kid. I grew up singing in church and in choral groups all through grade school and high school while also taking classical voice lessons. Once in high school though, I really got into classic rock music and decided to picked up a guitar. From there I started singing and playing guitar and bass in a number of different blues, rock, soul and metal bands. I was hooked. Music got put on the back burner a bit for me after high school, but a couple years ago I was laid off from my day job and my wife and best friend convinced me to give music another go and I’ve been doing it ever since.

SA: What bands would you cite as biggest influences on your sound? RT:  My first big musical influence was Jimi Hendrix. His music was the first time in any sort of popular music where my mind was blown by the obvious love of writing music and making it something completely your own. It was such an expression of himself. My biggest influence on my music right now would definitely be Tom Waits. I’m also really heavily influenced by Dan Mangan, Shakey Graves, Nina Simone, Ryan Adams, Kendrick Lamar, Father John Misty and Nora Jones these days.

SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? RT: I’m not sure what I would consider my biggest success. I’ve played some really awesome stages with some incredible bands. I’ve done two collaborations with 5 Paddles Brewing Co. out of Whitby ON. where the beer label was a playable vinyl 45 with my music on them. That was pretty awesome. I’m also always incredibly grateful to still be touring and playing all over the place.

SA: On the other hand, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? RT: Honestly, sometimes the biggest challenge is just to keep at it. I mean, I get to play MY music for a living and get to travel more than most people and see things and places multiple times that most people don’t get to see in their lifetime, but there is definitely a trade off. The highs are matched by the lows with the doubt and the constant hustle to get shows, opportunities, etc. I’m very fortunate though to have an incredibly supportive and amazing wife who has my back and encourages me forward when I some times want to stop. I wouldn’t trade what I do in for anything else and I love it so much; it’s just not always a party.

SA: How do you approach the song-writing process? RT: I don’t really have a set way of writing to be honest. Sometimes the melody comes first, sometimes it’s the lyrics, but a lot of times I will come up with a riff on guitar first. Once I’ve got a piece of something that I find interesting I usually grab a glass of whiskey, beer or tea and sit and play with it until I get somewhere or it drives me so insane that I have to leave it alone for a bit. After I’ve got something I’m a little happy with, I "road test" it at shows and try to flesh it out/trim it or decide if it should just get stripped for parts for other songs. 

SA: What are your thoughts on the Ottawa music scene? RT: The Ottawa music scene is definitely a unique and interesting one. There are a lot of talented people in this city and a lot of really interesting and sometimes unorthodox venues to play their original music in. Something that has set this city apart for me too is the amount of support that the city seems to give to the arts and music community here. There are a great number of festivals big and small here and there always seems to be some sort of initiative encouraging some chapter of the Ottawa art community where a lot of other cities that I’ve lived in either don’t know where to put support properly or have no idea how to support their own scene and go elsewhere for art instalments and music for functions and festivals.

SA: In your opinion: What is the best song you have written? RT: That’s an awkward one for me. I don’t know if I could say what my best song is, but I have favourite songs for different reasons. The Last Iris off of my first EP I love because it was therapeutic for me to write and reminds of my why I wrote it every time I sing it. With Grace was written for my wife and I’m not good at love songs so that’s always going to be her’s. End Game was the first time I think I dabbled in finding my own sound both sonically and lyrically. Smile makes me happy because when I released it a friend of mine told me that I was the only one who could write a song that sad and then have the audacity to call it Smile, haha. 

SA: If you had to choose, what is your favourite show you've ever played (venue, city, other bands)? RT: That’s a tough one to answer because I’ve had some awesome shows with some incredible bands in amazing venues over the years. My favourite might have to be from a couple years ago when I helped put together a Tom Waits tribute night with a bunch of my favourite musician friends from groups like Hairy Holler, Benjamin Reines, Fish Head Phil, The Volume Academy, etc. at my favourite venue, The Moustache Club in Oshawa. It was incredible because I not only got to hear some of the best musicians I know play our collectively favourite songs by Mr. Waits, but I also got to jam with them on one of the best stages around. Sadly, The Moustache Club is no longer around, but I had some of the best nights of my life on that stage and in that bar.

SA: A question for fun: If you had to pick your favourite local band in Ottawa, who would you choose and why? RT: I really enjoy The Heavy Medicine Band. Keturah is an incredible singer, songwriter and performer. The band is just really solid and their shows are always a great time.

SA: What do you have in store in 2018? Best wishes for a great rest of the year, Rory! RT: Thanks so much! For the rest of the year I’ve got a couple more festivals to play like Supercrawl in Hamilton and Beau’s Oktoberfest. I’ve got a few tours to do as well and I’m starting to write my next album. It was a pleasure talking with you, hopefully we can share a pint or something some time.
