I completed Those Who Govern Reason (the four gods/secret job bosses from Octopath Traveler) between January - August 2021.
Averaging around 160 stitch square on 16 count navy aida, they are, without question, the biggest cross stitchings I’ve ever completed. They’re also, by far, the ones I’m most proud of. Pride of place on my shelf behind the Octopath 2 busts.

CLASH OF THE WIZARDS ROUND 1-B BOUT 5
RASPUTIN (Anastasia) VS DREISANG (Octopath Traveller)
Propaganda under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PROPAGANDA
RASPUTIN "Literally immortal. Has a banging villain song. He can take off his head and be absolutely fine. Lived in the bottom of the ocean for years??? Has an albino bat for a familiar. Just very silly. The villain song is so good tho."
"Has a badass villain song and spends so much energy trying to kill an orphan"
DREISANG "What's better than a wizard? The God of Wizards!"
"Dreisang is one of the 13 gods who created the world. He is the god of magic and transformation, With a cane as his symbol. His magic stems from him. He is depicted as a old man with a staff made from an ash tree in his right hand. He would later join the other 12 gods in the battle against the fallen God Galdera. Also fun fact, his Twinbrother is Dother, God of Plants, Medicine and Harmony. In the games he is one of the 4 gods you can fight to gain access to the secret Classes for your party members. By defeating him you unlock the “Sorcerer” Class."

Me: *Going about my merry way in Octopath* Friend: So there’s 4 more classes behind Super Bosses Me: Aight bet.
AN ENTIRE DAY LATER
I got Winnehild down to half health on my second try before deciding (and getting late advice) that one or a couple of the other jobs would be a great help.
Dreisang, also kicked my ass after a hell of an effort. So. SOMETIME GRINDING LATER, AS I DO A COUPLE OTHER QUESTS AND STEAL SOME GEAR
This is the team I am going up against Dreisang with.
Tumblr media
Here’s to fucking hoping that come hell or high water, I win.

i think it's really funny that 3/4 of my strategies for the octopath 1 secret bosses involve only using the girl characters

It’s weird just how little the other four gods in the Pantheon (Steorra, Balogar, Dreisang, and Winnehild) are talked about or even mentioned in OT2. Do you think Temenos was surprised to learn about them from the OT1 gang?
honestly the lore of the other 4 gods is something i rlly wonder about, i thought for a while that they weren’t mentioned at ALL in ot2, and then a friend of mind found out they do actually have references! -in the dance sessions of some NPCs, lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(not sure if he found the balogar dance, i couldn’t find the pic in my discord dms lol) not sure the lore implications of this. do the other 4 exist but are even less prevalent than in orsterra? or are they so far removed they’re like, basically just stories? gahhhh i wish i knew

okay came across another Dance Session skill with a weird name so I just went ahead and looked up a list of them, and it turns out the four "hidden" gods from Octo1 are referenced in the Dance Session skills:
Hild's Hymn - Winnehild
Nocturne of Sang - Dreisang
Sonata of Balogar - Balogar (congrats buddy, no one forgot your full name)
Sterra's Fantasia - Steorra
There's also two Dance Session skills with some really interesting names, and those are the Wargod's Duet and the Sagelord's Duet, which got me thinking about this post, and how apparently Winnehild and Brand are twins (the wargods), and how Dreisang and Dohter are twins (the sagelords, possibly--it'd make more sense if it was Dreisang and Alephan, although given how much an apothecary's skillset parallels a scholar's, calling Dohter a sage isn't too much of a stretch).
None of the main 8 gods get any sort of special mention in the Dance Session names, but it's still...interesting that the 4 "hidden" gods aren't entirely absent from Solistia despite not being mentioned basically ever.

Finally got back to Octopath Traveler, and I made the wise decision to finally get all four secret subjobs from Steorra, Winnehild, Dreisang, and Balogar.
It actually went pretty well! Dreisang was arguably the easiest, if a bit of a hassle at first because of that damn Divine Majesty skill. Balogar was the hardest for me, almost entirely because once he hit his Runestorm phase, he started snowballing hard. I was only able to beat him because I had Primrose stacked with the Sorceress subjob, and that woman is a goddamn nuke.
Anyways, my current party has Primrose as a Sorceress, Ophilia as a Starseer, H'aanit as a Warmaster, and Tressa as a Runelord. I'm finishing up the last of the Chapter 4 quests, and then its off to the endgame. I have absolutely no idea what to expect other than Galdera is involved somehow, but I have a feeling its gonna be...rough.

you know what I haven't done in a while? Played this game, or OT2. I should do that. It's not like I don't have enough on my to-do list.
anyway, here's another chapter of Cyrus's day that wouldn't end.
Chapter 4—dream in vain of saintliness: After waking up from another death, Cyrus consults Ophilia on spiritual matters. On the road, he recalls another shrine and a night in Bolderfall with Therion.
commentary below the cut:
It's Cyrus's turn for a conversation/light therapy with Ophilia! I really love writing Ophilia like this, if you couldn't tell from the conversations she had with Therion in the previous fic
i could not be bothered to try to find out if somewhere in the ever-expanding lore of this game there is a definite answer as to what they think of an afterlife or pretty much any other aspect of religion, so i MADE IT UP
I MADE IT ALL UP
hilariously to me, Ophilia is happy to talk theology when someone asks, but when it's up to her she wants to dish about relationships
god shit
hey you know what's annoying about writing any fic in which the source material has 8 protagonists with separate storylines that overlap in location but not anything else and you want the geographical and emotional progression of their travels to make even the slightest bit of sense? EVERYTHING
I had at least three different things I had to revise around when I thought again about the storylines
even in this fic when they are mostly in the same stretch of road!
But gosh darn it, I could be sure that they went roughly from Dreisang to Bolderfall to Atlasdam, and then on around the central lake to the riverlands where the cyclical part of the story takes place
once the idea occurred to me, there was no way I was resisting the scenes in Bolderfall
especially Cyrus being taken by surprise by being invited back to his boyfriend's room
ohhhh Therion.
okay thank you for reading!

Cyrus: oh? How do you use it?
Osvald: it requires that you love someone and you get no bitches so unfortunately I can’t teach it to you

Hello and welcome to my Ted Talk where I ramble about how Solistia is Orsterra but further along.
Spoilers ahead.
Now I know, I know, technically it's another world, but lemme ramble bout this theory.
We all know bout Pangea, the super-continent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras, the one continent that then, over many many many years then broke up into the continents we know today due to Continental Drift. How does that apply to this theory?
We know Orsterra is set very early on. We have ships, trading merchants, all that jazz, and the narration for Alfyn's story says that the age of medicine is in it's infancy. So this gives us a good idea on the current technology, namely none.
And then we have Solistia, which is clearly further along in development. They're entering the Steam Age, the steam train is starting to take shape, New Delsta is starting to take the shape of New York, the Inventor is making machines, and Science and Medicine seem to be progressing further.
Solistia is leaps ahead of Orsterra in terms of technology. And then we have this guy.
Tumblr media
He's theorizing that Solistia may have been one whole continent in the past. Continental Drift Theory. There's even a map that looks a lot like Orsterra in the Guard Outpost in Conning Creek
Tumblr media
And then we have the geography of the continents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Side by side of Sunlands, Riverlands, Cliffland and Hineouma, Leaflands, Wildlands]
These three regions are right next to each other, and are in the same orientation as their counterparts, though Solistia stretches up higher, while Orsterra is kept to the South West.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Side by side of the Frostlands and Winterlands]
Same with both frosty areas. The only regions that don't match up are the Woodlands, Flatlands, Coastlands, and Highlands for Orsterra; The Crestlands, Brightlands, Harborlands, and Toto'haha for Solistia.
But here's the thing. Geography can change overtime. The Flatlands somewhat match The Brightlands, the Coastlands could have become the smattering of Islands once you get past the whirlpool. The Highlands could have broken off and drifted further, much like the Woodlands.
The Gate of Finis, is roughly in the same place in both worlds. Off (roughly) South East in a hard to reach place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So that's what Geographical evidence I have. Let's get a bit more... Theological about it.
Eight of the Gods are still the same; Aelfric, Alephan, Dohter, Sealtigce, Brand, Draefendi, Aeber, Bifelgan. But we're missing four others.
Dreisang the Archmagus, Winnehild the Warbringer , Steorra the Starseer, and Balogar the Runeblade .
I think, they're lost Gods. Gods who's worship has faded into mystery with barely anything to show for it. In Orsterra, already their arts are thought to be lost unless you find them, and challenge them for it, but they're still known. They're still called The Twelve.
In Solistia, they're lost lost. You can't even find their shrines or any historical evidence, if they even existed at this point.
But you can find their teachings still.
The Armsmasters wielded all 6 weapons and have innovated on the old skills Winnehild would've taught. Winnehild's War Cry became Sixfold Strike, and the Armsmasters developed new techniques to compensate for the lost ones. Notably, there is no divine skill for them, possibly because with Winnehild gone, they have only themselves and her old weapons to rely on.
The Arcanist uses sigils and runes in order to cast their abilities. Transfer Rune became Diffusion. So that's one half of Balogar's teachings.
The Conjurer has the other half. This being isn't mentioned at all in Solistia (As far as I've found). EDIT: Finally read all the Mercantile Manuscript. She's mentioned in the history of Hineouma, but no where else. You only find her in Ku after ascending a tower full of hard fights. When she gives you the class, she gives you at least 4 of the 'Rune' Elements (Because apparently it is anathema to give us more Light and Dark elements. Arcanist Tier 3 spell isn't Tenebrae Operiere, but its something.)
Dreisang's spells are not lost entirely. You can use Alephan's wisdom to at least reclaim 4 of them: Ignis Ardere, Glacis Claudere, Tonitrus Canere, and Lux Congerere.
Steorra is the last one unaccounted for. I haven't seen much, if anything at all, that resembles her abilities, other than possibly in the Conjurer class. I didn't really use that one for more than just elemental trails.
And then we have the Dark Gods. Vide and Galdera.
They are very different gods. One of them is Shadow/Void and Chaos, the other is Life and Death. You can fight them both. However...
Who's to say that conflict with Vide didn't split the continent in two? It was a hard fight for Aelfric on his own, and Vidania is smack in the middle of the sea. Who's to say all that divine power being thrown around didn't crack and split apart the continent into several pieces, eventually drifting apart, though both halves of this one stayed relatively close by each other.
The night left Orsterra in pieces.
And when the dawn rose, it was called Solistia instead.

Embarrassing god parents continued:
Winnehild’s son, Miguel, is the jock of all time. He and Alfyn are football stars, tho Miguel likes drugs and partying while Alfyn is preparing to take a sports scholarship into premed. Winnehild knows nothing of her son’s drug addiction, blaming his flaws on everyone else. everyone dreads her arrival at the PTA meeting
Dreisang is an overprotective grandpa. Everyone loves him but his granddaughter is a little too forward with an upperclassman. He’s kindly rejected her SO many times… then she made a false report of sexual assault against him in retaliation. She is unofficially grounded for life
Steorra is a caring and empathetic person, though she isn’t great at speaking about her ideas. Vanessa is picked on for having a mom who’s big into astrology and horoscopes, though she picks on them back ferociously.
Balogar is a dilf, his son Darius is a PE nut. He won’t. Stop. TAKING THE SAME CLASS
He won’t stop taking PE until he beats Therion in a track and field race. Therion is practicing every day while Darius is being a lazy lil shit
