Surrealist miniature photographer

Mexican photographer Felix Hernandez creates masterful dreamscape fantasy by using his toy miniatures and the magic of illusion. Felix says "Scale is important to bear in mind when evoking a sense of realism between the toy and the background. Because a macro lens creates a depth of field, Hernandez needs to use focus stacking techniques to provide the grandiose scale required of these big shots." It is important to make the photo seem realistic so by adding a blur to the edges, it looks like the images were taken of a real scene, making the viewer believe it more.

I love how he creates this mist around the objects in the image, it makes the scene seem more dreamlike and surreal. I would like to experiment with using this technique in my next photographic pieces.

When Felix creates his images he makes everything himself including the mist effect, and he stages the objects all by hand. This is inspiring how he does this and I will attempt to stage the objects how I like before adding them into the manipulated piece, but I will also use photoshop to create more of the effects.

Christopher Boffoli specialises in fine art, commercial and editorial photography. He is also a journalist. 

Christopher Boffoli’s ‘My Big Appetites’ fine art photographs feature tiny figures photographed against real food backgrounds. In this project he chose to work with only natural light on the whole series. Changes are made to the composition and often to the figures in his photos often changing f-stops until he is happy with the outcome.  Boffoli uses real food to create his sets.

Felix Hernandez goes the extra mile when creating his miniature world photos. He directs his  Photography Studio "Hernandez Dreamphography", where he develops creative projects and high impact images for advertising campaigns and branded content for international brands such as: BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Nickelodeon, Mattel, Top Gear Magazine, Cadbury, and many others. A lot of his work is produced in his studio; a list of lights Hernandez uses , Pocket Wizard Plus II and Plus III Transceivers.These connect almost any camera to any strobes. Big Stopper ND 10 stop Lee Filter and a ND 1.2 stop graduated soft Lee Filter. He uses these filters occasionally when doing long exposure shots using natural day light. Hernandez creates surreal miniature photographs using digital editing and hand crafted props and objects
