Dreamtale brothers x gn!Reader
This was a request from my Wattpad! Consider it an early New Years' special. Whether the reader is the brothers' sibling or not is up to you.

Dream and Nightmare Belong to Joku
Ink Belongs to Comyet
Error belongs to loverofpiggies
------------------------------------
Today was the New Year! That means a chaotic day for Dream and Nightmare. For this day, they decided to put their differences and rivalry aside and celebrate together, as good brothers should. With (Y/N).
The two had spent the evening before today and the whole morning preparing and getting everything ready. They had made a lot of delicious food and bought snacks, picked out some movies and games, and laid down a few mattresses with fluffy warm blankets and pillows so they could all have a sleepover on the living room floor. They had even hung up decorations fitting for the event.
Now they were just waiting for (Y/N). The brothers had sat on the couch busying themselves with whatever was playing on the TV.  Though, the more time that passed made Dream anxious, which Nightmare sensed.
"What's wrong with you?" He asked. Dream flinched and looked down, fidgeting with his hands.
"I'm just worried, I know It's just been a couple of minutes since the scheduled meeting time, but..." Dream answered. Despite being optimistic most of the time, Dream felt as though something really was wrong and it made him uneasy.
Nightmare glanced at him and then at the clock on the wall next to him. It had been about 7 minutes since (Y/N) was supposed to show up. Nightmare also couldn't help but be slightly worried as well.
"Let's wait a bit more. I'm sure they'll show up, they probably just got caught in the snow or something." Nightmare attempted to reassure his brother. Dream sighed and nodded bringing eyelights back onto the TV.
'Caught in the snow'. This claim could very well be correct since, while (Y/N) could teleport through the AUs, their accuracy wasn't the greatest. Often times they tended to stray a few or more meters away from where they were supposed to end up at.
30 more minutes pass and the duo are sure something's happened now. Even if (Y/N) had teleported uncharacteristically far it wouldn't have taken them this long to arrive.
Dream had been checking his phone about every 40 seconds or so, desperately hoping to see a text from (Y/N) explaining their situation, yet there was nothing.
"I'll call them," Dream said and unlocked his phone, pressing (Y/N)'s profile as Nightmare watched. Dream put the phone on speaker and waited for them to answer.
Nobody picked up.
The brothers were definitely worried now.
"M-maybe Ink or Blue knows.." Dream hoped and decided to call them as well.
"I'm going to go look for them. Update me if you know something." Nightmare sighed and stood up. Dream nodded at him and looked back to his phone, scrolling to find Ink's contact.
Dream pressed call and waited for an answer. Yet again, no one picked up. It's not like it was unusual for Ink to not pick up, he often forgot his phone somewhere.
"Damn it Ink, why now?" He mumbled to himself, growing annoyed at the lack of responses.
Meanwhile, Nightmare was trying to find you in AUs that were nearby the AU where he and Dream had rented out a house for the New Year's, which was in an Outertale pacifist timeline. He was growing more and more frustrated with the lack of your presence.
He walked through the ruins for, what, the 4th time now? He focused on trying to feel your familiar aura with not satisfying results. Was it possible that you were kidnapped, he wondered? While it wasn't likely for you to be caught by any ordinary monster, someone like Error could definitely nap you if you weren't paying attention. Though, Nightmare didn't see a reason for Error to kidnap you. He decided to check it out anyway.
Teleporting to the Anti-Void all he saw was Error sitting in his hammock watching UnderNovela enthusiastically.
"What? What do you want? I'm busy here" Error asked, pausing the show.
"Have you seen (Y/N)?" Nightmare replied getting straight to the point.
"(Y/N)? No. Why?" Error asked once again.
Nightmare just sighed and teleported away, not feeling like explaining the situation. Besides, (Y/N) could be in huge trouble right now and he wanted to find them as fast as possible.
"DREAM, HELLO! HAPPY NEW YEAR!" Blue's voice boomed excitedly through Dream's phone speaker.
"Hey Blue, happy New Year. Do you know where (Y/N) might be?" Dream asked hopefully.
"OH, ARE THEY NOT WITH YOU? I THOUGHT YOU WERE SPENDING TODAY WITH THEM AND NIGHTMARE?"
"Well, we were supposed to, but (Y/N) still hasn't shown up and we're very worried something might have happened to them." Dream explained.
"Oh...No I Haven't Seen Them. I'll Keep My Eyes Out Though! I'm Sure They're Alright, Dream." Blue's voice got softer once he noticed the worried tone that Dream had.
"Okay, Thank you. Bye, Blue."
"Goodbye Dream! Let Me Know If You Find Them!" Blue said as he hung up.
Dream was left sitting on the couch, he wondered if he should go out and look for (Y/N) as Nightmare did, but he also didn't want to risk (Y/N) just showing up super late and wondering where they are.
'Oh! (Y/N) has the keys inside, I'll just leave a note saying we're out looking for them and to give us a call.' Dream thought and went to get a piece of paper and a pen.
Nightmare had already checked all the nearest AUs where (Y/N) could possibly get stranded, yet he still didn't even have a clue about where they could be. He sighed and decided to go back to Dream in case he had found (Y/N). Nightmare stepped inside seeing Dream was just about to leave.
"Did you find them?" They both asked.
"Oh.." Dream looked down. "Where could they have gone?" He asked only to get a shrug from Nightmare.
"Did you call your friends?" Dream nods at Nightmare. "*sigh* This is hopele-" His sentence was cut off by an overly cheery song playing on the coffee table.
Dream ran over to his phone seeing it was Ink. He quickly picked up.  "Hello?"
"Dream! I'm so sorry I forgot my phone, what did you need?"
"Have you seen (Y/N)?" Dream asked hurriedly.
"(Y/N)? They're with me, why?"
Dream lets out a breath of relief. "Great, alright. Why are they with you? And where are you?" He asks.
"We're in the doodle sphere! They said they got lost trying to get somewhere and forgot the address so they've been waiting for someone." Ink responds.
"We're coming!" Dream yells.
"Wait, why-?" Ink gets cut off by Dream hanging up.
"Let's go, let's go!" Dream grabs Nightmare's forearm and drags him out to the doodle sphere not paying attention to his whines about being confused since he didn't hear the conversation.
Once they arrive, Dream and Nightmare see (Y/N) on the ground talking to Ink as he sketches something in a notebook. They both run over quickly, Dream hugging (Y/N) tightly. "We were so worried (Y/N)! Why weren't you answering our calls?" A concerned Dream asks.
"I'm sorry Dream, Nightmare, My phone died and I really had no idea how to get there haha," (Y/N) answers. "Sorry for worrying you both again."
"All that matters is that you're alright." Nightmare plainly mentions. "Let's go." He adds. You and Dream stand up and follow behind him.
"Bye Ink! Thanks for taking care of me!" (Y/N) yells out and waves at Ink before stepping into Nightmare's portal.
(Y/N) looks around the rented house. "You guys really decorated the place nicely! Shame I wasn't here to see it earlier or get to eat the food you guys made." They admit guiltily.
"It's okay (Y/N)! We still have snacks and everything!" Dream exclaims, happy that the three of you are finally reunited again. "What should we do now, guys?" He asks.
"You two bought games and movies, right? Let's put one in the background and just play (b/g)." (Y/N) offers. Nightmare nods and Dream goes to look for the game.
And so the night continues with the trio playing board/card games into the late night before falling asleep during gossip by the mattresses.
Bonus: (Y/N) woke up a few hours after falling asleep to the sound of...bombs?? They sleepily rubbed their eyes before peeking behind a window curtain in the living room, seeing a bunch of colorful fireworks in the night sky.
"Dream! Night! Wake up, there are fireworks outside!" (Y/N) shook them awake, leading them out the front door.
"H-huh- what?" Dream asked, not being able to make sense of (Y/N)'s words as he just woke a few seconds ago "Wow.." He mumbled out when he saw the fireworks. "So pretty," he exclaimed.
"Hmm, It's nothing special." Nightmare said, though he really was enjoying watching the fireworks with Dream and (Y/N).

"You are such a cutie~" Dream cooed out, you cried and sobbed. Your left arm was completely torn off, blood pooled all around your shoulder. Blood dripped from the stump of the limb onto the ground. The flesh was still there but it looked like something had been carved into your body and you didn't want to know what. Dream stared at you as you cried.
The skeleton narrowed his eye sockets at you. He tightly gripped your chin and forced your head up so you were making eye contact with him while he spoke. "Stop crying, It doesn't suit you. I don't want you to be sad." You whimpered in response. Dream leaned down, his lips brushing against yours in an attempt to comfort you. Dream then pulled back slightly, giving you space before continuing again "It's ok now," Your tears subsided, but your face continued to tear up. "See! No more tears." Dream's voice sounded so calm. His voice was soothing and calming.
But you knew that tone. You knew that tone very well. You knew it wasn't fake but it was definitely not real. You could tell it was just for you though. Dream wanted you all to himself, but you didn't want that. He was obsessed with you, even though you weren't interested. You knew how he felt about you but you didn't want it either. It would only make things worse than they already were. Dream would only get angrier if you were with someone else. You couldn't handle that. Dream cupped your face and kissed you, the smell of blood invading your nostrils.
The kissing soon turned into making out. Your eyes were shut tight as you tried to block everything out. You could feel Dream sucking on your neck, but you knew this was just a distraction. You just needed to stay here until he decided to let go of you. Dream broke away from you and sighed, rubbing his skull "We need to clean the wound now and fix you up. But first…" He leaned down and nibbled on your earlobe
".. We can do other things~" Dream purred out with a smile.

San
he kisses you in a way that is hypnotic. slow yet urgent. sweet yet passionate. time with you doesn’t exist, he is convinced you were made for him, and what a heaven-sent present it is to have you all. every single part of you… his. san can’t recall the last time he was this excited, his heart pounds so hard in his chest. your touch is enough to make him crazy, but looking at you bare, vulnerable? he would kill and die for you if he had to. is this a dream? if so, he wants to keep on dreaming of you forever.
“Baby, you sure you wanna do this? Oh… very well then. Put your hands over your head for me. Don’t move. I’m gonna show you how much I want you.”
Mingi
his voice gets very deep and he can’t help but bite his bottom lip thinking about how all his secret fantasies are coming true. the fact that you are right there, under him, your eyes so sparkly waiting for him to do the next move. he takes a moment to scan your body, fingers softly caressing your skin. every curve of your body is studies thoroughly by him because mingi will make this is the first time of many to come.
“Look at me. Now, don’t be shy… you are precious. Ahhh that’s it, look at you, baby. I’ve wanted this since the first moment I saw you. Perfect, you are perfect.”
Wooyoung
he always knew his charisma would get him far, but never thought that it would allow him to share your bed. the way your little kisses spark the dirtiest thoughts in him is insane. you are so delicate and soft, he wants to ruin you. wooyoung tastes your sweet-salty skin. he finds your adorable weak spot behind your ear. he wants you to trust him, just as he trusts you, because he doesn’t plan to let you go.
“Everything about you drives me insane. You doing this on purpose? Let me hear you, beautiful. Am I making you feel good? Yeah? Mmmmm… that’s nice, isn’t it?
Jongho
he is the one that with your permission would take off your clothes, taking his time, admiring your beautiful physique underneath. with every move of his hands, his breath hitches a little, a silly sign of nervousness that you don’t notice. he asks you to help him get undressed as well, never taking his eyes off you. he grabs your face so softly and pulls you towards him, planting a firm kiss on your lips. this is one of the most special nights he has shared with you.
“May I take this off? Let me take care of you. Your lips are so soft, you are magnificent. Come here… Sit on my lap. Tonight is just you and me, ok?”

Loving someone is giving that person the chance to hurt you and trusting that they will never do so.
You had given him so many chances, and what you got in return was being hurt over and over again.
Like sitting on a never-ending roller coaster, that's the feeling when you were with him.
He made you happy, he made you sad. He gave you surprises and he also shattered many of your dreams.
Then, you had enough.
You trudged back home with heavy steps after a difficult mission. Blood drenched your uniform. The blood of Wanderers, and the blood of your comrades. The mission was a complete failure. There were a lot of people injured, and it was completely your fault.
Because you trusted someone who shouldn't have been trusted.
Rafayel was standing on an empty street corner, waiting for you. He knew you would always take the same route home. You were too predictable, that was why he played with you like a toy.
You grit your teeth. You and Rafayel each held one end of the rubber band. But he was always the first to let go.
It hurt, the feeling of being betrayed hurt so much. But you still kept walking. You did not want him to see you miserable like that. You would not give him the opportunity to trample on your feelings and trust anymore.
Rafayel's dark eyes gazed at you. You saw scales sprouting out from his face and neck. That was the day when Lemurians were at their weakest.
Nevertheless, he made the decision to stand here and wait for you to come home. As soon as he had heard the news from his spies, he immediately ran to find you even though he was in his weakest state. You stopped moving when you were just close enough away from him, to look straight into his eyes with full of indignation.
“I will explain everything.” Rafayel spoke up. And he should, but you were sick of it by now.
“That's enough, Rafayel.” You cut him off before he could say anything else. “You've said enough.”
You trusted his intelligence, only to lead your comrades into a trap. He always took advantage of your absolute trust to hurt you and the people you cared about. Especially when there was something related to the Lemurians, he suddenly became a different person. Someone you did not know.
“Your secrets…” You said, “Just keep them to yourself… I think I've had enough of your lies.”
"I did not lie." Rafayel reached out towards you but you backed away. “Everything I told you about that operation was true. I simply…”
“You simply didn't tell me the whole truth.” You said bitterly.
Rafayel withdrew his hand. He appeared so frail that he may pass out at any time at the side of the road. This time, you would not care as much. You would just leave him be.
“You showed concern for me, then you left me alone. You helped me, then pushed me into a trap... What is real, Rafayel? What is the truth that ever comes out of your mouth?”
Rafayel was silent, staring at you with pain. What an excellent performance. You almost believed him, one more time.
“What are you going to do, then? You could kill me with just one blow right now.”
“Don't challenge me.” You threatened with a glare. You hurried past Rafayel, wanting nothing more than to get home and clean off all the blood on your body and calm yourself down. Yet, despite his extreme weakness, he still has the ability to draw you in. Your eyes met his sadness. In an instant, it seemed as though you had descended to the ocean's lowest point.
“You asked me what was true.” He said, his voice shaking. “You may not believe anything else I say… But this, this alone is the truth… I will never, ever let anyone hurt you… I will never lose you again…”

You stood in front of Xavier's house waiting impatiently. As soon as the door opened, you immediately rushed inside without even saying hello.
“Is there anything wrong?” Xavier asked gently, but his innocent look made you even more angry.
“You crossed me out of that mission, didn’t you?” You replied in anger. There were several rolled-up reports in your palm, ready to be torn apart. You aimed it in his direction. “This was originally the mission assigned to me! Why did you request to do it on your own?”
Xavier saw the problem as soon as he glanced at those papers. He tried to explain:
“That mission is too dangerous. I can't let you do it by yourself.”
“Then would it be better if you went alone?”
You gave Xavier a glance. He was trying to calm you down, but every step he took closer you moved further away. You were upset because he decided to enter a risky area without you, maybe endangering his life, and you were unaware of it until everything had been taken care of. Even with you by his side, he carried the weight of everything by himself. You did not want that, because you felt compelled to share everything with him.
"I'm sorry." Xavier was honest with you. “I should have asked you first. I decided on my own because I thought it was the best thing for you.”
“What's best for me?” You retorted. “Do you even know what is good for me? To participate in my own mission, to decide to do things as I wish, or to fight by your side!”
Only silence covered the room. You collapsed into his couch, burrowing your face into your hands. You hated this feeling of helplessness. He took away your right to make decisions, your right to accompany him on this dangerous mission. The thought that he did not need you was so painful.
“You don't believe in me…” You spoke up after a long while. When you looked up, you saw that Xavier was still standing there, looking regretful and helpless because he was unable to touch you at the time. “I thought we were a team. If we're a team, we won't hide missions from each other, we won't sneak around alone behind the other person's back..."
“I'm really sorry. That mission is much more dangerous than area N109. I can't let you risk it.”
“That means if you had to choose again, you would still do the same and hide it from me, right?”
Xavier remained silent, but you already knew the answer.
You did not know what hurt more; Xavier hiding that mission from you, or he not trusting you could complete it?
You got to your feet, looked at Xavier, and proceeded to the door.
"I truly put in a lot of training to be in a team with you. But maybe that's not enough. If you think you can do it all by yourself then so be it, I don't see the need to stay here anymore.”
"Don't." Xavier seized your hand fast to hold you there. “Don't say such things…”
You drew away from him fiercely. Xavier let out a cry and embraced his left chest at that very time.
It appeared like he was hurt. You scowled and extended a hand to touch him.
“Are you injured?”
Xavier tried to smile, but his face gradually turned pale. He took that opportunity to pull you back and wrap an arm around your waist to keep you in place.
“It's only a little cut.”
“How can it be small when you look so painful?”
Xavier struggled to breathe. He replied:
"I'm sorry. Maybe it's true that I couldn't do that task alone. You were right. We are a team, I need you.”
You feel pleased, but still very angry with Xavier. It was because he chose to go alone that he got injured like that.
“From now on, I will definitely not hide anything from you anymore. So… don't leave me alone, okay?”
You were silent for a while, but wrapped your arms around Xavier to hug him. “I have to check your wound first.”
Tumblr media
𝒁𝒂𝒚𝒏𝒆
The more you care for someone else, the deeper the wound they cause you.
It had been a month since you could contact him. Just like that, he disappeared, again.
You were frightened. Just like when you were a child, suddenly one day, the friend who used to make snow seals for you disappeared without a trace. No one could hear about him. He had also covertly assigned your monthly health check to another physician without you knowing until you got to the hospital. The last time you had heard about him was when Dr. Greyson told you he were rushing off to the Arctic on urgent business.
How funny it was to learn that from someone other than him. No farewells, no assurances not to worry. And for an entire month, he was absent. Although you didn't have the authority to make him tell you his schedules, at least you wanted to know how long he was going to be gone and whether or not the mission was risky.
You grew more afraid and then angered as you considered him going missing once more. How could he do this to you, after everything you had been through together? Yet he dared to show his face to your house on a rainy night.
When he saw that you were covering yourself from the rain with your jacket, he moved forward to shield you. But you dashed over to the porch. You just looked at him from a distance, but near enough to see that he was alright. After that, you entered and slammed the door in his face.
Not a word was said to each other. He did not even call your name or send a text message. He stood in the pouring rain for a long, long time. You couldn't care less. That night you went to sleep fitfully, and when you woke up the next morning, your auntie neighbor told you that he had just departed a short while after your room's light went out.
You did not try to contact him again. This cold war was initiated by him, so let it be. It was now a week after his return, and you had to go to the hospital for a check-up before an important mission. When you saw the name of the physician assigned to you was Zayne, you requested for another.
Dr. Greyson found you in the waiting area. He asked about your refusal to let Zayne examine your health. Honestly, you could not find any reason to answer that wasn't too personal. So you just sat in silence.
“The first thing Zayne did when he got back was to read your files. He wanted to make sure you were fine while he was gone.”
Dr. Greyson said. You lowered your head and looked down at your clasped hands, experiencing a range of conflicting feelings.
“I don't know what happened between you two, and maybe it's none of my business, but Zayne is a friend, and I need to butt in just this once…”
You looked up at Dr. Greyson.
“Zayne went to the Arctic to seek assistance from his teacher. Things got worse as it became more and more difficult for him to control his Evol. I caught him injuring himself with his Evol. He made the decision to suffer alone until things got in control in order to protect others.”
You were shocked. Zayne had been suffering because of his Evol for the past month without you knowing, while you were blaming him for leaving you.
"Perhaps he refrained from telling you out of concern that you would worry and accompany him there."
The rest of the conversation drifted away. Then you stood up, tried to hold back your tears as you walked to Zayne's office. He sat behind the computer screen, looking up at you with mixed emotions in his eyes, although his face still remained calm.
You entered slowly, noted the scars on his hands. There were fresh cuts that were not yet healed. He must have been very hurt and lonely. What must you do to make him open up to you? What must you do so that you can share the burden with him?
“You… What's wrong?”
As soon as Zayne spoke, you hid your tears by walking towards him in a haste and pulled him into your embrace.
“Please don't go without a word... I won't be able to bear it if you disappear again..."

MDNI 18+ BLOG -> ageless blogs and minors WILL BE BLOCKED
SOMNOPHILIA WITH ATEEZ MAKNAE LINE : giving or receiving
(aka: do they wanna fuck YOU in your sleep or do they want you to fuck THEM?)
hyung line ver
pairing ✭ ateez hyung line x gn!reader
warnings/notes ✭ somno (obv) it's all implied to be consensual, oral (giving & receiving), deepthroating, cum swallowing, wooyoung is a bit of a freak
again, if you like this format and want to see more stuff like this, i've opened up requests for them ☺️
Tumblr media
san: giving
honestly, it's not really in san's nature to fuck you while you're unconscious
but when you brought it up to him (practically begging him) he decided that he'd be willing to help fulfill your desires
he's so unbelievably gentle
kissing down your chest
holding your hips tightly in his hands
watching your face carefully to make sure you stay asleep
when he finally pushes into you, his grip doesn't waver but his breath does
peering down at your sleeping face flipped a switch
the dom in him fucking loved how helpless you were like this
and as keeps fucking you it becomes more and more evident that he loves this
when he finally comes inside he collapses beside you
pulling you into his chest and kissing the top of your head
Tumblr media
mingi: receiving
there’s no denying that mingi already dreams of his dick your mouth every night
so what better way to wake up?
he’d probably think he was dreaming at first
tiptoeing the line between consciousness and unconsciousness
his brain fuzzy
and he peaks his eyes open to see the covers thrown aside and his cock deep in your throat
you glance up at him through your lashes
watching as his tongue flicks out and licks his lips
and how his head drops back with his jaw dropped when his cock hits the back of your throat
he can't help the way his hand tangles in your hair
or the way his grunts get louder and louder as he gets closer and closer
or the way he holds your head down as he spills his cum straight down the back of your throat
Tumblr media
wooyoung : giving
obviously, wooyoung is a tease and a fucking menace
so of course he wants to bury his face between your legs while you sleep peacefully beneath him
it's why he prefers when you sleep nude
but on the off chance you don't
he's not beneath pressing his nose into your underwear
and wrapping his arms around your thighs
pressing them against the sides of his face
burying his face between your legs
kissing you through your underwear
simultaneously, he's humping the little bit of blanket between his own legs
trying his best to stay quiet despite the immense pleasure he gets from the secrecy and taboo of it all
sometimes he can make himself cum just from the friction
but he's not leaving that spot until you wake up and pull him up by his hair
Tumblr media
jongho : receiving
the things jongho would do to wake up with you wrapped around his cock every morning
he knows it's not realistic
but god he wishes it were possible
because every time he wakes up with your leg wrapped snuggly around his waist
and his dick buried deep inside you
he knows it's gonna be a good day
there's rarely any movement
just a lot of heavy petting and kissing while you lay in front of him
full with his cock
when he gains full consciousness, his hands go directly to your ass
massaging it and kissing your neck and shoulders as you start you doze off
letting you fall back asleep while he's still deep inside you

Hey, can I make a request for your event?
Fyodor x fem!reader, except he's madly in love with her but doesn't accept it bc he thinks it's useless :)
@Fyodor Dostoevsky . . . (^-^)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tags: smitten!fyodor, fluff, angst if you squint, gn!reader, domestic Fyodor, kinda ooc, vol 14+ doesn’t exist, yandere themes if you get 400+ graded glasses
A/N: Hello anon !! I’m so sorry this took so long, probably 2-4 months (?) I’ve been so busy with school that I just didn’t have time for requests. I’ll treat my fics like those “mafia!dazai who…” type of posts, if that makes sense. I know it’s a big change from my old writing style but I really hope you would still like it :))
Tumblr media
smitten!fyodor who met you while walking around Yokohama. He asked you for directions one day and as faith would have it that was the exact place you were going to as well. Although, he didn’t actually need directions, he just wanted to test his skills in deceit.
“Excuse me miss, pardon me for being a bother. Could you please tell me where the nearest train is?” You softly smiled at the gentleman who had gotten your attention. “Of course, I was just heading there myself, you could just follow me if you’d like.”
smitten!fyodor who was fond of the way you spoke to him in such a polite manner. It was endearing to have someone be so courteous (bare minimum, I know).
smitten!fyodor whose voice you couldn’t forget. Softer than silk yet even the sun itself would revolve around its gravity.
smitten!fyodor who “accidentally” bumps into you from time to time. It’s been going on for several months now and during the first few times you jokingly accused him of stalking you.
“Fyodor-san? This is the fourth time this month, if I didn’t know any better I’d say you were stalking me!” You teased. He responded to your joke with a small chuckle.
smitten!fyodor who denies feeling anything for you since he thinks it would hinder his plans for a better world. He constantly tells himself that it’ll pass, but each day he spends with you feels like a dream.
smitten!fyodor who reassures himself that this was all part of his master plan; that you were just another pawn in his epic chess match with Dazai. Surely someone as simple as you couldn’t destroy his plans, right?
smitten!fyodor who tells himself that keeping you happy is all part of his mission to save the world. When he’s overthinking his actions around you he tells himself that he only keeps you happy because a world where you’re sad confuses and frustrates him—oops, wrong thought!
What frustrates him further is the fact that he can no longer tell himself that you’re just a pawn. He never has internal struggles, so how could you do this to him? For years and years he chased his ideals. He tried to attain the unattainable, he never thought something as simple as affection could be that unattainable thing.
smitten!fyodor who saw you on a date with somebody else and he felt like that was God’s way of telling him that he should continue to fulfill his mission rather than chase someone who clearly doesn’t like him back.

There was nothing he could feel, he held the cold and lifeless corpse of his lover; just as he did to his dear friend a few days ago. Cold pulse, it was the only thing he could find; coldness, just as who he was before he met them. How hard he tried to find the love they once held in their eyes. He didn't mind his bleeding hand, he could only focus on holding them. His bloodied hand was mostly theirs and a small mix of his. The tears that dripped to his scarred hand made it sting; just like a wound topped with salt. He tried to make their heart beat once again but it was hopeless, they only held him dearly—as if they were fine and smiled before their eyes completely shut; never to open again. He screamed their name at the top of his lungs before he slowly laid their body on the floor, just like they were resting. He walked away, numb tears escaping his hazel eyes. The room was illuminated by the warm sun they once loved, and the crimson blood was oozing out of the three bullet holes on their chest. He tightly clenched his hand, not minding how much it hurt from the wound. The rain started to pour while the bright and orange sunset was covered with dark, thundering storms. He walked away, turning his back on everything, the Port Mafia, Chūya, his crimes, Oda and you.
"Dazai-san? Are you there? Kunikida-san called me and told me to go to work with you." Atsushi knocked on a small apartment room owned by the Agency.
Dazai sat up and looks at his hand again. It was clean, no blood was leaving his body through a wound that once was. A mark was left there, a memoir that the day he got that wound was the one where he failed to save you.
"That dream again.."
A few tears escapes his eyes and landed itself on his hand, just as that day. He wiped them away after hearing Atsushi knock on the door again.
"Yeah I'm here Atsushi-kun!" He said through the door, trying to sound as cheerful as possible though his voice came out dry and hoarse.
"Are you okay Dazai-san? Are you sick?!" Atsushi asks, his tone full of worry and franty.
"Nop! I just woke up so please wait for me in a few minutes Atsushi-kun!" He said in his usual cheery tone making Atsushi sigh in relief. Dazai's words soon registered in his mind, and he began to panic.
"But Kunikida-san will scold both of us for being late!"
"It's fineee! Its just going to be the same old Kunikida!" He tried explaining while ramaging through his drawer, trying to find his bandages.
"But—"
"I'm gonna be quick Atsushi-kun, I'm just going to dress! You don't want me to go to the agency shirtless do you?" He said in a spiteful voice, wrapping his arms, hands, neck and torso with leftover bandages.
"eww no!"
"exactly" Dazai replied before wearing his shirt and vest. He glances at the scar again before opening the door and throwing in his overcoat.
"Let's go Atsushi-kun!"
He skipped to the agency with Atsushi behind him. They got scolded by Kunikida but it the end he was the one that took his hour long lecture and Dazai got punished by him.
The day passed again, and the moon showed in the midnight sky. Dazai was laying in his futon, staring at the dark ceiling, bottles of sake throws across the floor. He turned his head beside and saw them, a worried look was plastered on their face as they looked at him. He knew that his mind was playing games with him, despite that he came to caress their cheek to feel their warmth; but they disappeared, and his hand only met the cold and empty sheets beside. He clenched his fists tight before standing up and grabbing his overcoat and leaving his messy apartment. Walking in the dark streets lighted by the faint moonlight, was something both of them used to do. He gently smiled at the small memory before continuing to walk, he arrived at a small greeny fields in the outskirts of the city.
"Darling! Osamu! Wait up!" They said before panting.
"You really need to run faster my love!" He turned around and saw them with furrowed eyebrows. He chuckled before going to them.
"You're so unfair! I'm on my slippers because you called me and told me it was an emergency!" They pouted, taking his assistance and grabbing his hand for support.
"It is an emergency! I was bored and I missed you!" He pointed out.
"Haii.. whatever.. Don't you dare try to lie to me" They sighed shooting him a worried look before caressing his bruised cheek, and he leaned on her hand.
"What do you mean love?" He sent them a cheeky smile, trying to feign innocence and ignorance.
"Osamu." They said his name in a serious tone, and he only laid his head down.
"I-its nothing" He quietly muttered, getting closer to them, trying to feel their warmth.
"Shh, it's okay. I'm here" The hand cupping his cheeks snaked it's way to the back of his head, as he leaned his head into their shoulder.
Their hand slowly and gently patted the back of his head while he hugged them. The silent crickets are the only thing that was heard. He felt scared, he didn't want them to know his line of job in fear that they would leave him. They were a civilian and he was a mafioso—no an executive of the Port Mafia, the rulers of the night. He needed comfort, he wanted to tell them how his friend betrayed them and now the other was dead; but he couldn't, he was afraid of them abandoning him too. Nobody spoke a word, they didn't bother to ask him more, they just waited for him to open up. They gently hummed a tune as they waited for him, their voice was like a lullaby that comforted a scared and crying child.
The event plays on his mind, seeing illusions of that day in the fields, he could not remember what happened afterwards. He put his hands on the pockets of his overcoat as his fingertips got colder and colder. Walking to a small cliff near the ocean, a name was carved in a rock just near the edge, beside it, was a fresh bouquet of roses. He leaned against the grave as he closed his eyes, reminiscing the old memories.
"Hello love... I missed you" He gently smiled, feeling the cold breeze pass.
A faint voice whispered comfort in his ear.
"I missed you too.. tell me.. is that little girl, the one you told me about—Kyoka, I think—is she okay?"
He felt his hair ruffle, as if someone was playing it just like they did. He wanted to open his eyes to know who it was, but he knew that they would disappear just as he looks behind. He knew that he was just thinking how they would respond but he didn't mind it.
"Mhm.. the conflict was over and the Moby Dick returned to the ocean... Kyoka's now home with the agency" He whispered, trying to feel their warm.
"That's good.. How is the agency treating you.?"
"hmm.. Atsushi-kun is as usually kind.—" he faintly smiled.
"—oh, Kunikida tied me to a chair earlier and beat me up because I was late, it hurt a lot. Ouch" He dramatically whispered and they faintly laughed in return. Silence once again came, the howling winds and the clashing waves are the only things that can be hear besides his lone heartbeat.
"Come back to me please.." His voice cracked. He heard no response, he opened his eyes and looked behind to see nothing but a view of the night sky and the dancing leaves. A part of the cloudy sky was clear, showing the moon perfectly, as if it made way for someone to go high above.
"I'll go to you soon love.. and if the heavens forbid it... I'll fight against God myself just to return to your embrace" He sat up and glanced at the grave once again before finally returning to his apartment.
He closed his door and muttered a small "I'm home" hoping for someone to respond. Taking off his shoes and overcoat, he took a blade from his bathroom drawer, and then made himself comfortable in the bathtub. He rolled up his sleeves and sat up, positioning the blade just perfectly on the veins in his wrist. With one quick and deep slash, blood started gushing out of his left wrist. He winced in pain, taking the blade once again, he slashed his right wrist; it was less deep than the cut in his other wrist but nonetheless, it was deep. Blood started to drip to his garments and bathtub, his vision started to blur and he leaned completely to the wall, closing his eyes. At the last moments of his life, he remembered what happened after that day.
"Hey... If you don't want to tell me it's okay, but don't ever try to hide your emotions from me.." They smiled at him, their fingers playing with his hair.
"What do you mean? I don't hide them—" He left their embrace and tried to put on a facade.
"Osamu. You don't need to hide them" They said, walking upfront, their voice was full of calmness, just like a lullaby. Their arms was behind them, their right hand holding their left arm
"Fine... But let me ask you this then." He looked at their back with a serious tone.
"Why did you come in the middle of the night to a cliff just because I told you to do so?" He asked, his gaze following them as they walked forward to the edge, admiring the moon. They continued to hum before they responded to his question.
"Because I love you" They turned around and smiled at him. They put a strand of hair behind their ear, as the wind passed by.
"mmm.." He opened his eyes to see their illusion planting a kiss on his forehead.
"I..finally..found..you...." His voice slowly faded into nothing but air.
It was as if time stopped for a mere second. The pain that engulfed him whole was now only faint. Their warmness returned to him and his vision completely faded to black, submitting to the sleepiness he held after hearing them hum his favorite tune...

𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝑳𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑮𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆 (Then I Intend)
Sesshoumaru x reader Part ||
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Masterlist.../ Previous part.../ Next part....
Summary: The Lord Daiyokai often shuts you up in an inn, every few days of the month, for the demons that are attracted to your bloodscent. It is one of the few graces he allows. You would think its for your safety, and truly it is. Because not only do you seem to forget that he is a demon, but also a man.
Rumors of a bloodhungry demon arise, one that prowls the edges of this ghost town, devouring its residents under the shroud of moonless nights; Of which steadily approaches. Under the dark viel of a new moon, all desires will be brought to light.
Content warnings: Misogny, A LOT of it, era apropiate sexism, (physical) assault, dismemberment (a little and not reader) non graphic.
A/N: A lot of the misogyny here is just characters reiterating what women of this era were expected to do, i.e be homemakers listen to men and whatever. However, the physical assault part will be put under a bar if you need to skip.
Length: 15.8K (This one got away from me bois gn)
Part 2 of 4
Tumblr media
What I'm trying to say is that, in this universe which sculpted itself from a baptism of fire, I am the moon swept up by your tendernes. You got me dreaming foreign words: gravity, ellipsis, perigee, until all i can think about is becoming ancored into orbit around the saltwater green landscape of your laughter.
Tumblr media
You had another strange dream that night, when you fell asleep.
Rin fretted, so you swung between a light and deep slumber, and the images that flashed behind your eyes were strange, to say the least. The remnants you remember play like a movie.
It's dark, the cloud of your body floating away from you like a mist in the darkness. White scales glow. Another man’s voice, frantic, angry almost. A familiar blade. Tenseiga flashes like the cold white edge of the moon, and then, silence.
And then warmth.
Were you just stressed? Was your mind just filling itself with nonsense after what happened– What almost happened last night?
You’re up before the sun, dawn just a lavender-pink bruise on the horizon.
Numachi-san must still be asleep, because no one stirs as you make a pot of tea, ginseng and ginger, like the old apothecary had intended. You’re not sure if they’re meant to go together but oh well. The earthy, warm drink is also spicy, and does wonders to help finish waking you up so early.
The slightest shuffle in the dim dark, and you whirl. Your Lord steps into the foyer, and you try to ease the sudden pounding of your heart.
He lifts a hand when you bow to greet him, barely sparing a glance and striding past. The breeze of his pace cools the sweat on your brow, and you reach out.
Figuratively of course. “My Lord, would you not stop for a cup of tea? It's…ginger and ginseng. It will help reduce stress for you.”
“I am not stressed.”
“Still, it wouldn't be, uh, very good to start the day on an empty stomach, my Lord.” He turns on his heel. And in the pastel colored dawn cringing its way across the sky, his eyes almost glow. They could be glowing, for all you know. The moment feels too trepidatious to really ask.
Your voice is soft. “...What are you doing today, My Lord?”
“...It is none of your concern.”
“I’m not concerned, I'm just curious. Will you tell me?” And you step forward. Just one tiny step but he tracks it.
“The demon, stalking this village.”
“So they’re real? Not a rumour?”
“Yes. It must have some measure of strength, I intend to test it.” A hand on his blade, not Tenseiga. That is for emergencies.
“So that's why you’re gone throughout the day. Are we... Will we see you at dinner?” He sighs harshly, suddenly, and turns where the foyer leads to the front doors.
“What is the point? Does it bring you some added comfort, my presence?”
“Yes, it does.” He meant that rhetorically, or sarcastically, you only realize. And you answered far too honestly. You backtrack.
“And Rin, too, as well. It would do her some good to know that you are still around. The last time she saw you was early morning yesterday; You leave signs of yourself even when we are on our travels, so I suspect she’s worried. And, that that's why she had a nightmare.” You wring your hands, you’re babbling too much.
Why are you nervous…? This isn’t new territory, not really.
There's always been some odd kind of tension between you and the Lord, even if you were hesitant to call it so. He’s been more lenient though hasn’t he? Besides the night before. He doesn’t really force you to walk on foot anymore when you forgo honorifics, and he’ll just ignore you when you get too obnoxious. Nothing crazy, but he’s already used to you!
You always just figured he wasn't used to company before, especially one such as yours, and there has always been some feelings of safety and attraction on your end. He is rather beautiful, though you wouldn't call yourself vain. Yesterday just breathed to life the embers that have been left smoldering for too long.
Above all, you just want things to flow naturally.
He sighs. “You so readily coddle the child.”
“Should children not be coddled?”
“No.” He pivots, eyes eerie and pointed. “How will she survive, if you spoil her so?”
“That is different, she is a child, and the adults have the responsibility to care for and protect her. That is different from coddling.”
“That sounds exactly like it.”
“But it's not. She is still being taught what she needs to learn. And if you're so against this ‘coddling’, why did you let me leave to take care of her last night?”
And just like that, the breath in the room is sucked away at the slightest mention. Sesshoumaru goes still, still in that way that reminds you that yeah, this isn't a human. He isn’t a bomb, steadily ticking towards explosion. No, he’s a mountain, a breath away from a landslide.
But he doesn't say anything. The way he looks at you seems to be daring you to make mention of that again, and you’re not sure that that is such a good idea anymore.
“...It's just…she's a child, and I believe all children deserve a happy childhood and… I'm just eager to please her, My Lord.”
“And not I?” You both catch that at the same time, because when your eyes meet, you see the slightest, just the slightest  shock in them. A reprimand, for himself.
Huh.
He clicks his tongue, sharp and flat. “Nevermind. You are–”
“My Lord,” You’re bold enough to cut him off, gods be damned. “I can’t even begin to imagine what I could do that would begin to please you, with our…differences. Should I start? You have to be clear with me.” You take another step closer, and when did you become so bold? His eyes flit to yours.
The silence doesn't just fall, it crashes, like a boulder landing, like a current pulling you under.
That came out… much more bold than you were intending. But you don't backtrack, you wait.
There are no distractions now.
“I ‘must be clear’, with you?” He steps forward, in that all too familiar way. It's like he’s gliding more than walking, and the proximity makes your heart pound. You hold your tea closer.
It's still a touch too warm, stinging your hands, but it doesn't seem to affect him when he takes it from you, sets it down; With his one hand he grabs your wrist, his hand large enough to dwarf yours, a thumb pressing into the lowest thrum of your veins.
“Your pulse is quick.” He murmurs, head dipped. He’s so close to you. You drink in those regal features, the way he’s so fixed on your hands.
He rubs over your wrist, slow, deep circles that slow your heart under their prudent care. You don’t say anything, you just breathe as he works, oddly…focused.
His nails, his claws, are hued red at the points, fingers long and defined and pretty. Not soft, calloused and rough, he is a samurai…but pretty.
He moves to rub his wrist against yours, and a slight shock of static makes you jump, but he’s too close for you to get that far. Not that you want to go far. You’re reminded of when your mother would rub lotion on your hands, or scented oil into your wrists. He does it once, twice, on both wrists, sliding his skin across your wrist, the inside of your forearms, before he moves to the delicate skin behind your ear.
You laugh and jolt away. “That tickles.”
“Just stay still.”
“I’m trying.” Not hard enough, you jitter away from his touch with breathy laughter, and with a breath of a mutter he cups the back of your head, and replaces the slow drag of his wrist with his teeth.
That stills you. It's…barely a bite, what he’s doing. But his teeth are there and you’ve never felt anything so sharp so close to your neck before. You quiet, under the conscious threat of being near something so sharp. But he wouldn’t do anything.
You're 80% sure.
He murmurs against your skin. “Are you going to keep still, now?”
“Uh, yeah?” you breathe. “Your fangs are at my throat, duh.” He doesn't rise to the bait, he just drags his teeth over the soft column of your throat, his claws tangled in your hair.
“What... are you even doing?”
He clicks his tongue, and you can almost feel the wet heat of it. “Dense as always.”
“I am not ahh-” a staggered breath, just pushing a moan of your lips when he bites down, just above your collarbone. It's gentle, not even breaking skin, and that's what surprises you.
You’re clinging onto him, you realize, strands caught between your fingers. You lean back, but there's nowhere to go between where you were and him.
He just sighs against your skin, and leans into you more, so your back is arched and you’re melded against him, like a pressed flower.  There's a rumble in his throat you can feel when you squeak.
Well, two can play at that game.
You reach, press into him with your body and return the favor; your mouth tracts the pointed shell of his ear. When you reach the pointed end you bite down, and he jolts. He actually jolts.
Not away, mind you. But his teeth clamp down before he moves, leaving an imprint around that plum colored bruise.
You look at each other, caught in this twilight moment. And he draws away. You want to cling, but you have your pride, and reluctantly you let him out of your hold, white strands of silk slipping through your fingers.  His face is smooth but you sense a contentment? There, the slightest sense of smug satisfaction.
You press your fingers to the spot his teeth were in, just seconds ago, when he leaves. There, just above your collarbone. If you had a mirror you could see it, but you’re certain.  A lavender pick bruise, delightfully sore.
You press down, hard.

Breakfast is a normal affair, or abnormal, as you were the first person up which happened almost never. Breakfast was served anyways, and it didn't take much cajoling to get Numachi-san to sit down with you again, even if she only accepted a cup of tea, which she poured herself, after she served all of you. Must be a tendency of hers.
“Hey, Numachi-san, have you lived here in this town your whole life?”
“Hm? Oh, no, I moved here when I was quite young, no older than you, actually,” she tells you as she sits. You pout a bit.
“Oh, I was going to ask you some things about the Demon haunting this place. Like whether it's been here longer than you have or something.” She looks at you oddly, with her dark bangs. Her eyes and her hair.
“They've been here a few years before I came here, and the attacks weren’t as bad. They got worse over the years. This used to be a popular spot for a resting Daimyo on their travels, as it was a good spot to rest travel wise. One was eaten though, and his entourage, that's what made people stop coming here. If even a Daimyo isn't safe, no one is. People are too poor and sentimental to move. And some others were eaten, trying. Most don't bother anymore.”
“And…yet you chose to stay? Your sons were able to leave, why didn’t you go with them after you're husband passed, since I'm sure you don't get many customers nowadays…”
“Oh, because when I do get customers, they’re amazing ones, like you honored guests! There's the occasional weary traveler–but I get monks, samurai, swordsmen, hunters looking to take down a fabled demon…those folk hardly return though.
“I…you could say, inherited this place when I came to this town, after I left my village. It was when the Daimyo had been eaten, along with the samurai who protected him and the old inn keepers. I worried it would be too hard a job for me to fix, but my sons helped me. It’s only as furbished as it is now because they helped me with the more tedious things.” She delicately raises her cup to drink.
“How helpful of them. What are your sons like, Numachi-san? They’re visiting pretty soon, right? You must miss them a lot. ” She looks up from the tea in her hands, tilts her head.
“Oh, well, yes of course…I had twin sons, one would have been ideal, but having two...You might not know but twins are an ill omen. When I gave birth…It was either leave one or be banished. So I was driven from my home, and found my way here. No one cares about ill omens in a town that's already cursed,” she shrugs. “Now I’m here.”
“You said your husband stayed with you?” Her smile turns sour.
“Well, no, he…visited. He too believed in the ill omen of twins…and he was a very reclusive person, even at his most affectionate. So the visits dwindled until…he eventually passed away.”
“I'm…so sorry for your loss?” Even though he sounds like an asshole?
“Don’t be, it's a relief in some ways...” The bitterness surprises the both of you, she pauses, and then covers her mouth in horror.
“I-I mean…It's just–”
“You...don't have to explain anything to me, Numachi-san.”
“I don't want you to think I’m ungrateful,” she presses, daring to inch closer to you. Her hands tremble.
“You’re so kind, honored guest, and I’d hate to spoil your image of me. I am grateful for both my sons and my husband when he was with me. I'm grateful for this Inn, and the people in this town who are kind enough to not have chased me out like my birth family. Truly, I am.”
“You don't have to be grateful for the bare minimum.”
“Hm?” She looks so confused, and the expression she wears nettles at you. You’re not irritated with her, just her attitude. She’s so….timid. Mellow.
“Of course you can be grateful for the blessings, all the good in your life. But it's okay to…not be okay with just the barebones. You don’t have to be thankful for the scraps.” You can be angry too, you know, you want to tell her.
You think of a girl, with twin boys, being driven from a village by her own family. Traveling alone for goodness knows how long, until she reached a cursed village and a dilapidated inn she would painstakingly restore. A husband who only visited ‘sometimes’.
You would be livid.
Maybe that’s why you’re always so hesitant when it comes down to the new, the change. A chance of failure is never completely zero.
Maybe that’s why you’re always so hesitant to take a step forward.
But Numachi-san, unfreezes, and laughs, waving away your words like more than a too cool breeze on an autumn day.
“You’re such a strong-spirited person, honored guest. I admire your strength; and I am a bit envious too.” She rises, and takes the teapot with her.
“I think I’ll go brew a new pot, this one is no good cold. Excuse me.”  Even though her hands on the pot flush pink from the heat, you watch her leave.
Jaken shakes his head at the woman, bug eyes closed.
“That woman is far too meek and soft-spined for a town like this–no husband, no sons…Though, her attitude is the proper one a woman should have, nothing like your brashness and lack of manners and respect.”
“Jaken, can you kindly shut the fuck up?”
“See! That's exactly what I mean!”
“Rin.” Rin looks up  from the table she’s been staring intently at. People think just because she’s mute, she is also deaf. She hears much of the world around her, more than people realize. Her eyes are young and wide as you speak to her.
“...You don't have to rely on a man to define yourself. You can do what you want to do, anything at all, alright?” She nods but her eyes drift back to the table. You tap it with your knuckle to get back her attention.
“I'm serious. You have me. You have Sesshoumaru. A-un and Jaken too, I guess. If you need something….”
Jaken cuts in. “Go to the Lord, he’s much more capable.”
“For like...intimidation and murder and money. I got everything else.”
“Like?!” You shrug.
“Well, she’s going to grow into an adult one day..."
‘Like you’re a proper example.”
“I am!”
“Of course you are-’ And Rin breaks out into laughter, snickering behind her hands, eyes crinkled in delight.
You feel your heart warm, swelling three sizes and all, before you reach over the table to tickle the girl.
“Hey! What are you laughing at?!”
You might not be a parent, but Rin is the closest thing you have to a child, and you’re going to do right by her. Coddling and all.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
In your musings it takes more than a full hour to traipse your way to the rice paddies from the inn. You've gotten faster at walking, during your travels with your little group, but it was still away, at the other end of town, at the bottom of a small mountain which a stream ran down from, and fed into the rice paddies. Behind that mountain, miles and miles past, you could just see the peaks of a mountain range. That was where Sesshoumaru wanted to go after all this. It was pretty far, on foot it would take at least…a week, or two? With A-Un, and the Lord, only two or three days.
When you went up to the little house on the hill overlooking the paddies no one answered, and you looked about for any signs of the oldman.
Rice paddies spread out below you, and you look down the hill to check for any signs of life. Luckily, you did, a group of people working close by in the fields below. You went to meet them.
And promptly fell down the hill.
And oh no, you couldn't just trip and roll down like a normal person, or even bonk your head on a rock and pass out, which would be merciful. Instead, you do this stupid half trip, half wobble and catch-yourself-but-still-very-much-falling dance down the hill like a demented horse, before gravity finally lets you go; You collapse like a maiden struck by a curse.
‘Gods, are you there? Why have you forsaken your most devoted child?’
With an audience to boot. Well, at least you didn't fall into the water of the paddies, you landed barely a foot away from where the grassy hill turned into mud, and sloped down. A guy, thigh deep in the waters gapes at you. Three identical versions of him you see in your swimming vision as he steps forward and nudges you with a wet hand. You give him a thumbs up to show you’re alive. You think he calls back to the others you saw with him.
Some of the words swim in and out your hearing, your head too dizzy to focus on them, so you can only squeal as your world tilts, and you're suddenly held in the arms of the first man (or three) you saw, the world flashing in colors of blue and green and brown.
You try to protest as he starts carrying you up the hill but he doesn't listen to you.
“Excuse me?! I said put me dow–”
“I can hear you.” His tanned hands are wet and warm from the sun and work, black hair pulled into a ponytail. He looks around your age, if only a few years older.
“So then put me down.”
“No, that was a long, erm, fall.”
“It was nothing, please put me down.”
“Nope! What if you rattled your head and your brain comes spilling out your ears if you move too fast?” A beat of awkward silence, and he tries to laugh off that crazy ass sentence like it was a joke.
You have to get out, you're in the hands of a madman.
“Uh… that, wasn't a good thing to say... sorry? Really though, if you’re hurt we should get you checked out–the Doctor is actually here for our father today, so she can just look you over real quick and then you can be on your way.” Finally at the top of the hill, he sets you down on your feet gingerly.
“Actually, what are you here for? Aren't you those fancy guests at Numachi-san’s honjin?”
“Uh, I guess. We’ll only be there for a few days, since we’re there to...recover.” Yeah, you’re not telling him the real reason. But he nods, looking over you, assessing.
“Traveling on the road, even with such a powerful Lord, must be exhausting for you two. Of course you should rest while you can!”
“Us two?”
“You and the child, of course.”
“Oh yeah, of course…”
The tense silence doesn't seem to bother him, in fact, he just waits…and waits. When no one tries to break it, he perks. “Yes!” He shouts and you jump. “How about I help you with what you need? Did your Lord send you to buy an order…?”
Couldn’t have asked that quicker? “No. I’m just running some errands for Numachi-san. Though that's not a bad idea, some rice would be good for our travels…”
“Our rice is grown from the melted caps of the mountain streams, you won't find anything better. Fit for your mighty Lord's tastes, I should say.” And he leans in, eyes gleaming. “Hey, please indulge me, for curiosity's sake… he wears a kimono with two sleeves but he’s missing an arm…did he lose it fighting some horrible demon?!”
He is a horrible demon. Technically. “I…suppose so? He left me in a village so I didn’t see the battle.”
“What about those markings on his face?”
“He was born with them, I believe?”
“And his chinese robe, very strange fashion, but he’s a demon right? Where did he get it, his sword, his armor?”
“The sword came from his father…? And I don’t know about the robe and armor, I’m pretty sure that's a result of his Yoki energy.” Did he make it with yoki or does he acquire it and then have to put it in his inventory, of sorts?
“I don't really know what I can divulge to you…?”
“Oh...” And, damn, the sad way he deflates endears you, like a kicked puppy, so you offer something else.
“I’ve seen other battles though, though they can hardly be called that with the strength of my Lord, if that would suffice.”
“Yes! I am Takashi, by the way, forget the honorifics.” He bows, and when he rises he winks, ushering you inside.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“...So he swiped out with his poison claws, and the demon fell to ribbons. It was so quick, so precise, that no blood stained his hand. It careened in an arc in the air, the slice so clean it took a minute for the demon to start bleeding out. We just continued on our way then.”
“Amazing…” He breathes, awestruck. The tale is practically playing behind his eyes and you laugh.
“It must be amazing to be able to serve a Lord like that…”
“Honestly? It is.” Despite your troubles and woes, there are sights that have taken your breath away and moments that are seared into your memory. Even in your world, you doubt you would have ever seen as much, ever.
Takashi-kun, as he cheekily insisted you call him, tilts his head to the side in question.
“You serve him?”
“Yes, it's tedious, but I’m glad for the work, it keeps me busy.” Never let him hear you say that, he would hold it above your head forever.
“...No, I meant being his disciple, not his servant.”
“Yeah, that's what I meant.”
“You are his disciple?”
“Yes…? The Lord is much too…dignified and proud, to name any disciples of his own. Still the imp wields the two headed staff, and Rin carries a tanto.”
“And you?”
“I can take care of myself, I have to,” you shrug. “I'm a woman, traveling. I’ve asked the Lord to teach us how to wield the naginata, but every weapon’s master we’ve seen never meets his specifications, so he won't teach us until we get the right weapon. ” you pout.
“Seriously, shouldn’t he put more priority on teaching us, if we’re to be traveling on the road with him?”
But Takashi fiddles with his hands, running fingers over some age-old scar there, looking down at it with a pensive expression. “Well why should he? Why would he? You’re a woman.”
“...Excuse me?” He gestures.
“I mean, even in this kinda’ place, we’ve heard of the Lord of the Western Lands. Such a strong and disciplined leader, it would insult him if you continued to pester him about teaching you how to wield an actual weapon, as if he weren’t capable of protecting you and the child.
“It's already awfully gracious of him that he allows the child the tanto, or that he allows two women to accompany him; I assume he provides you shelter and food and the like. Shouldn’t you be more grateful?”
“Huh?” There's this odd look on Takashi-kun's face, just beneath the surface, and the mischievousness that was present there is gone.
“No. No, I'm appropriately grateful. And there's only one woman; the girl is still a child.”
“Yeah, I guess you're more his type.”
You slam your fist down on the table. “Repeat that.”
You forget though, the men in this era haven't ever been taught to heed a woman. So he just looks at you oddly and says,  “I assumed that you served him as steward or maid, though I guess I was wrong.” He points towards the table, the pot of tea that has been sitting there.
“The pot has been sitting for a few moments now, and you have not served. I figured you were enraptured by the grand stories of your Lord, which is understandable. You are a guest here, yes, but as eldest son here it would still be rude for me to serve. Your Lord must be an odd one.” He sighs.
“Were you a sacrifice, from your village? Is the child yours? Oh, is she both of yours? Forgive me for my earlier comment then…Maybe that's what the Tanto is for–I heard Samurai give the Tanto and Naginata to their wives and daughters to defend themselves and the home from enemies. That must be the reason, right?”
“...”
“But again, he is a demon. Who is he to follow human conventions? Perhaps you aren’t a ‘wife’, exactly–” You stand so quickly the table is jostled, and he reaches out a hand to steady it, looking up at you unperturbed and confused at your outburst.
“...Do you not think before you speak?”
“Excuse you?” He frowns. “I’m making basic observations. You are really pretty, and not too old, so you must have been with him for some time, if the child yours. Are you his concubine? Your teeth aren’t black, obviously you’re not a wife,” he sighs.
You want to smash the chipped cup into his face. You want to pour the hot tea into his lap and burn him. He looks so satisfied with himself for this genius conclusion, not even considering the truth of the matter. You are a companion–not concubine.
But you breathe, you reign in your temper. Calm down, he doesn't know any better.
“I…am not a concubine. Nor a wife. No, I do not serve him in those…ways.  I am simply a traveling companion. Nothing more.”
“But you are a woman. What else do you offer?”
Just before you throw the tea pot into his face, an old frail frame strides into the room with purpose–and when you look up you stare right into the hard eyes of the apothecary, and the wrinkled face of the man who walks in with her.
“Oh, Father! Doctor!” Takashi-san rises to feet like he’s going to embrace one of them, but she just looks at him and he backs down. Her gaze turns to you.
“Ah yes, you, young lass. Put down that pot before you spill it. What are you doing this far from your hotsprings and futons and mochi?” You’re ready to snap at her but the old man speaks before you do.
“Oh, you’re that girl who came in with that Demon Lord, right? How about you sit back down and tell us what you came all the way here for.” His wrinkled face is spotted in moles and cherry, and you can’t help listening to the old man.
“Father–”
“Shh!” The old man hushes him, and Takashi-san rolls his eyes, playfully, but you see the exasperation in them. You all sit, and the apothecary is the one who pours. Takashi looks at you.
“I’m just running an errand for Numachi-san, I don’t feel right just sitting still and relaxing when she has so much to do.”
The old man gives a precious wrinkled smile. “Oh, what a kind girl you are. And what a generous Lord to allow his servant to help others.”
“I don’t think he did allow it, Father,” Takashi cuts in. “You weren’t there but I saw him; A Lord of that caliber wouldn't allow his… servants, to run off to do manual labor.”
“And what were you doing so early in the morning, before even dawn, that you saw them go inside the honjin, hm?”
“I…I wasn't! I was here, sleeping! I saw him after, when I was in town delivering!”
“Sure you were.” Old man Taiga, as you know he is, looks up at you, and so fast you almost miss it, winks. “Must have been taking mighty long if you had time to ogle at some demon Lord.”
“He's the Lord of the Western Lands Father!”
“Yeah, yeah, how about you go now and gather up that rice now for the good lady, and pack her an order too, for that Lord you so admire.” You like this old man. Takashi-san doesnt even look at you, he just grumbles under his breath as he shuffles from the table to go to fulfill his father’s orders.
The apothecary grins. Her teeth are white and straight as a US military cemetery. “One good thing about being a haunted town–at least we don't have to pay any taxes! We can eat all the rice and mochi we want and not have to worry about any Daimyo coming to raid the town.”
“A bad thing is that we don't have that many workers for the fields, so we often work more than we eat.” Taiga sighs, patting his back. He looks at you.
“The last Daimyo came to collect taxes since we had not paid for some time, and stayed at Numachi-chan’s inn– Well, it wasn't hers at the time. But he came with some few samurai, which were more than enough for a town like this. But not enough for the demon.”
The apothecary huffs over her tea cup. “I bet he ate well that day. And hasn't eaten that well since.”
“‘He’?”
She shrugs. “Female demons aren't so voracious. Or maybe they are–maybe she’s got a brood she needs fed.”
“What kind of demoness still feeds her kids for thirty, forty years? They’re grown and out now, if they exist.”
“If they exist. I'm betting it's a male demon though.”
“And how would you know?”
She slaps the table. “I’ll find out when I get eaten of course!”
“With how bitter you’ve become over the years? Ha!”
“And with how sickly and tough you are? You got a few good years before your time Taiga. And it won't be by demons!” They laugh, while you look at them over the rim of your cup. They seem to be pretty old friends, if the way they talk is any indication.
“Ah, I still wanna see my son and daughters get married though,” Taiga huffs. “Four daughters and one son…I wouldn’t mind if Takashi was sneaking about to meet a Lady,  but instead he’s training, like the next Samurai that comes in will notice his potential and take him on,” Taiga shakes his head.
“He thinks he’s gonna be the one to slay the demon of this place. He has more luck minding his business and keeping his head low. I’m still here after all, my children and all.” You notice no mention of a wife though, and tamp down your curiosity.
“Does…anyone know anything certain about the demon? Like, what type, or how old?” The apothecary and Taiga look at you, look at each other.
“Only the dead,” she supplies unhappily. “Though, we have seen the marks they left behind… the ones who fight back. And the wreckage the demon leaves behind, like the wrecked buildings in town”
“The demon seems cocky, to openly go into town and just into random buildings to eat people.” Like knock knock, delivery. Oh! You're the meal.
“Arrogance, yes, but no ones seen nor caught em’ yet. Been here for years and will probably move on when we’re all gone or eaten. A mighty demon to be sure, most definitely.”
“But stronger than her Lord?” Taiga points his cup towards you.
“Lord of the Western Lands…I grew up hearing the myths of this Lord, never thought I’d ever be so close to him… You must be honored to be able to serve such a Lord.”
“Uh…I guess?” What was he, some God? “He’s actually pretty frustrating and pretentious but to each their own.”
That didn't give you the reaction you thought it would. Instead of chuckling, they gape at you, moon eyed.
“...I don’t think it would be wise to talk about such a Lord in that way… Imagine if he heard you, girl!”
“I’d say it to his face.” Again, that doesn't give you such a good reaction. They both just stare at you, though the apothecary’s eyes narrow.
“Hm, well…he must be lenient with his servants…very lenient! Maybe he just is unaffected by a human’s words!”
“No, he’d just tie me to the back of A-un, our demon steed, if you will, and make me walk a few miles. Or cut my food rations. But honestly, he needs to be taken down a few pegs. Everyone is walking on eggshells around him, singing his praises, he needs a dose of reality.” You grin sneakily. “Just a small dose though, so he doesn't realize I’m just blowing hot air and he really is all that.” The old man looks like he could choke, poor him, and the Apothecary shoots to her old wrinkled feet.
“Come on now,” the apothecary grabs your wrist, and with more force than you expected, drags you up and out. You’re only able to pull your wrist back when you’re leaving the front doors of the house, leaving old man Taiga behind.
“Hey! What are you doing?!”
“No, what are you doing?” She throws your hand back. “You’re dumber than I thought if you think you can get away with talking like that in front of that kinda folk.”
“What do you mean-”
“The only reason they’re not ganging up on ya is because they think if they butter up the Demon Lord’s concubine, then maybe he’ll slay the demon for them. Do you even know how rare it is for travelers to actually arrive here, intact, this close to a full moon? It's either intentional or luck, and I'm betting on the former, in your Lord’s case.”
You scoff, but you can't really argue with her words. You’ve seen this sort of thing play out before, so it's not implausible.
You’ve seen plenty of desolate towns, both with and without your Lord, you’ve been driven out of a few of them. But with your lord, they always beg aid, offering up their most valuable goods, resources, wares…people. Your Lord has always rejected them all. It's very rare if he decides to take them up on their pleas.
Now that you think about it…wasnt it always whenever you were running low on something?
There was one time a rather prosperous village asked for aid in a demon that kept eating its women. Sessoumaru refused, and you nearly left, if not for one merchant, who offered some sweets amongst the things he could trade. You and Rin had perked, Jaken had scoffed, and your Lord...accepted. You and Rin were feasting on mochi for days.
The Lord had killed the demon quickly—but still called it a waste of time.
“I’m not his concubine…” She clicks her tongue at you.
“Yeah, it figures. I assume he wouldn’t let ya wander around on your own if you were.”
“He hardly lets me do that now,” you gripe. “He just always avoids me during these times so I got some leeway now.”
“You mean you can't let yourself get caught out here like this.”
“...It’s not that serious, I just don’t want to deal with him, that's all.” She coughs out a laugh, and slides a hand down her face.
“Oh girl…you might not be a concubine, but you must be something to have the courage to talk about him like that. Out or to his face.”
“Yeah, I’m a traveling companion.”
“Dense as a rock too.” Why do people keep saying that about you?! It's not true.
She waves a hand. “I know haughty types like that, and they’re not the type to take your kinda attitude girly.”
“How would you know? You know nothing about me.”
“Of course I know you, I used to be you.” She sighs and leans back against the walls of the house. You’re staggered into silence, and she takes the opportunity to talk again.
“Same attitude, same talk, same naivety. That's why you ought to take advantage of the things you have, and not leave them to chance. You got something going with that Lord of yours. Do something before he changes his mind–if not for yourself than that girl you got.”
“Rin? But he…” You know he cares. He brought her back to life for goodness’ sake. “He wouldn't do anything.”
“But he could. And if he could then there's always a chance he will.”
But you remember. The look in his eyes as you and Rin feasted on mochi. The almost teasing way he nettles at Jaken, who is none the wiser. The golden shade of his eyes in the lantern’s shine, in moonlight, the dim gleam of dawn. They way he murmured and breathed against your skin, like he wanted to–
You stop that thought right in its tracks.
Your fingers rush up to press against the bruise. The sore throb is a reassurance.
“But he wouldn't.”
She pauses, and she coughs a little in her incredulity. “Oh, girl,” and her face twists in sympathy. “You’re in love with him.”
“...It's not that serious.” Was it?
“Well, so much for your bluffing, you’re already too far gone,” she scoffs, like you didn't say anything.
She clicks her tongue, something lighter, and almost…fond? She walks closer, and starts fixing your clothing, like a grandmother would, adjusting things this way and that.
“Did you try the tea?”
“Huh? Yeah, I had some this morning.”
“Take some when you go back, It’ll be good for you.”
“I’ll take your word for it.”
“Hm. Then take this word of advice too girly,” and she wipes her hands down her front. “Besides talking about your Lord of course. Don't get too chummy with that innkeeper. You don't like being called a concubine, fine, whatever, you can afford that. But some people aren’t given that choice. She’s one of them.”
“What? She’s a widow. Her husband died.”
“By her own design. Why do you think her sons left her? Normally I wouldn't fault her–do you know how many potions I sold to all sorts of women? But her? I can’t forgive her. I won’t. ” With those ominous words and her hawk gaze, she walks away.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Takashi-san, whose Father insisted on ‘assisting’ you, who had insisted on carrying the rice bag because’ it’s much too heavy for you, you’d probably make it to the inn by sunset!’, nevermind that it was barely noon now, is annoying you. Damn chauvinist.
You didn't let slip the change in attitude he had, since you mentioned the Lord and the tanto thing. Before was the politeness and cordial attitude of a person talking to the servant of a nobleman or something. And yeah, you were used to that. That attitude, and even the cloying, patronizing way that this boy spoke to you was better than the outright venom that people spat at you with, when you dared to call yourself his travel partner…
It was still no less frustrating.
“Shouldn't we head to the inn as soon as we can?” he called to you, as you left him near the bottom of the stream.
“I wouldn’t want to upset your Lord because you’re not where you’re supposed to be.” A vein could pop from how tightly wound you are.
“I have chores to do, and then you can ‘escort’ me back. You followed me, so we’re going by my schedule.”
“Did your Lord grant you permission for you to be on your own?”
You pause, and turn to him slowly to show your displeasure. “...He doesn’t care. What does it matter?”
“But still…I should at least accompany you on your way.”
“You really shouldn’t. I'll be fine on my own. I've lived nearly the same amount of days on earth as you have, and I’ve definitely traveled farther. I'm good.”
“You’re very audacious for a woman.” And he wants a rock to his head, doesn’t he. “I'm offering my help. Even if you were being bashful, trying to deny me, you could be more pleasing.”
“...You have a shallow ego don’t you?”
“What?”
“....Takashi-kun, I appreciate how kind you are, but I would be remiss if you were to aid me any further. I want to please my Lord by bringing something pleasing for dinner, but if you help me it would just ruin all my efforts. Please wait here for me, please?” You make your voice sickly sweet, and bat your eyes. Though his brow twists, he doesn't offer a rebuttal, struck dumb by whiplash.
…Is it really that easy? “That…does make sense. He’s already letting you stay at a honjin, you should do something to thank your Lord.”
“Yes of course. Now, I have to hurry so I’ll be quick, alright? I’ll be quicker on my own anyways, and then the Lord will praise you for your efficiency. I’ll call you if I need you Takashi-san!” And you scamper away with your basket and a wave, letting the wide smile you put on drain away as you roll your eyes. You were sooo fake, did he really not notice?
Twenty, thirty, forty or so paces upstream, just underneath a few big rocks, nestled in the low current, the traps lay. Just where Numachi-san told you. The current was lazy, about waist high as you hopped along the rocks dotting the banks. You set your basket on a tall rock. There, you strip to your innermost layers, and stride in to catch your fish.
You have to be quick, and careful, odd high waves often rolled over, Numachi-san warned you. There were also other animals that came here to hunt, so you had to scurry.
There are only three or four bright red snapper fish as you checked, and pretty young by the looks of it, barely over a foot long, and weakly trying to swim free; despite your sympathy you know it was your job to bring them back.  Alas, why must so many of the tasty foods come from things alive?
And then you realize something. Beyond the bumbling stream, you can't hear anything.
And no, the water isn't loud enough that it blocks everything else out, no. It's just silent. No birds, no shuffling, no wildlife. Silent.
Somethings here.
Your hair stands on end as you reach for your tanto. There's nothing on the banks, and no movement in the undergrowth but there–
For a second, a blur races out of your peripheral vision. Cold dread followed by a flush of heat under your skin. You bring up your knife and whip your head to chase the sight, but it runs quickly and you only see a dark smear slither into the trees.
A few moments pass in tense silence, before you hear the birds again. You untense, and lower your knife. The blur was pretty large, probably…a bear cub, wandering from its mother.
But that silence… Still, you need to hurry, lest you want to wrestle with some bears over fish. There's a specific way to untie the part of the net that would free the fish-of course, you grab onto the tail of one so it can’t slip away, already flipping around in your hold. But you can't pick at it.. You’ll have to go under to do this.
So you hold your breath, and plunge.
The water is just hitting the edge of too cold as you go under; It's rocky and craggly under, and quickly you untie the net and grab your fish, one by one; The first two you grab by the tails and stride over, hurriedly tossing them into your basket and closing the lid after. The other two are harder. With extra room to move they fight, and you barely get the third in before you notice the water receding.
You’ve read enough to know when an incoming current is gathering. Quickly, you duck back down to untie your last fish, fumbling your fingers over the knot. You get it loose, but the fish, smarter than its brethren and slippery, darts around your hand and tries swimming off.
‘Oh no you dont–’ you turn under water to chase it, just grabbing the ends of its tail and holding on, but your foot gets caught in a crevice between rocks.
You get your face to break water right as the current comes in, knocking you back, hard. You don't land on the rocky bedfloor, but you’re thrown off balance, your foot stuck. You’re left floundering, you don't know how you don’t let go of the damn fish, but you don’t.
You try to reach up again, lungs burning, only to snort water as another wave smacks you dead in the face, pulling you back under. You’re losing air, and fast. You reach a hand, trying to break the surface, and kudos to your incredible luck, someone grabs it.
You are yanked out of the water, ankle scraping painfully against the rocks, choking on air on your way up.
“What are you doing?”
“Takashi-san?!” He pulls you up, your arm socket protesting the movement; He gathers you into his arms and drags you onto the banks.
“You followed me?!”
“What was I supposed to do, leave you on your own?”
“Yes, that's exactly what you were supposed to do.” You wrestle in his arms, they way he just lugs you over to the banks like…like a bag of rice. Of which he had, now you cannot see. You look around and reach for your basket that teeters dangerously on the rocks.
“You thought you could sweet talk me into acting like some…some–!!”
“Some what, Takashi-kun.” You wipe the droplets from your brow. Takashi-san sees this, the inner robes you wear. You’re still in his arms. He goes red.
“I knew you were just faking that demureness. How shameless.”
“Oh? And what gave it away?”
He drops you like hot coal.” You called me Takashi-san. Normally I wouldn't question this, it's only proper, but you’ve been calling me Takashi-kun. You slipped up.”
“Oh darn,” you roll your eyes. “And here I was thinking I could ditch you.”
“I couldn’t just leave you be, you know there's a demon lurking around here–”
“Like you can fight off a demon?” You rub the hip you landed on, and grab your basket. Seems he tossed rice to the side, presumably when he went to rescue you.
“I’m more capable than you are?”
“I'm not in danger of drowning now, am I?”
“Listen woman,” he hisses, his mirth replaced with irritation. He reaches out to grab your arm but you dodge out his way. “You’re a stranger here, you don’t know these parts. No one comes up here to fish, it's too far away and if you screamed, I wouldn't have heard you over the water.”
If you scream now, no one will hear you.
“Then fine, let me just grab my things and we can head back, alright?”
But his eyes narrow, and he shakes his head.
“No. We’re going back to my father’s house, it's closer. Then you’re going to wait for your Lord, or that Imp to escort you back.”
“I am not a child, nor do I need a chaperone–”
“You were taking too long!” He keeps advancing and you keep retreating. “I was waiting, and the woods went silent. That’s never a good thing. I had thought a demon had gotten to you, and then what would I say to your Lord!”
You roll your eyes. “Glad to see you’re so worried for my well being.”
“Good! You’re welcome!”
A harsh sigh drags its way past your teeth. “I did hear that odd silence, that’s why I was rushing. But maybe if I didn't feel so rushed, I would have waited until the high wave rolled over.”
“But you didn't, instead you almost drowned. Should you even be out? I mean, hunting surely isn't your strong point.”
“And keeping your mouth shut sure isn’t yours.”
“Excuse me?” You know that drop of voice. You could recognize it in this century or the next. So before he could get on with his next tirade, you snatch your outer layers, hurrying them on and making your way back down with your basket.
“Where are you going?!” you hear him fumble with the rice, but he decided to carry it, so that’s his fault.
“Back to the inn, where else? Are you following me or not.”
“You need to do as you’re told! You're not going to–”
“Listen Takashi, you're a rather pretentious prick, so if you have nothing of value to say, then be quiet.”
“You are supposed to–” you whirl around and he stops in his tracks, brow furrowed and one hair away from a full blown scowl.
“I didn't ask you to be my escort, protector, or chaperone. You were the one who decided to take the roles on yourself, so don’t get upset that I'm not playing into your little fantasy of being some noble village boy helping the poor maiden. Who are you to tell me what I'm supposed to do? You, some village boy?” You would poke his chest to emphasize the words, but you’re not getting as close as needed for that.
“And for the record. The Lord isn't going to acknowledge you just because you ‘escorted’ me. I’m not his pet.”
“But you are a woman,” he grits. “And you are his. There are basic rules you must follow for order–”
“Rules are meant to be broken.”
“You shouldn't even be wandering out on your own. Look what happened when you did, you nearly drowned!”
“I didn't nearly drown because I'm a woman idiot, my foot was stuck in a crevice.” Your ankle which, now that you’re on land, smarts. You can feel the blood dripping, not yet clotted over.
Tumblr media
“Thank you for your aid in getting me out of that, honestly–Your attitude could use some work though.”
“My attitude?” And you turn away from him. That is your mistake.
A hand yanks you back by the back of your collar and you choke, dropping your basket. Your instincts kick in when he tries to wrap his arms around you. You drop, and while he fumbles with your dead weight you grab his ankle and topple him over.
He must fight with his sisters a lot or something though, because it's hard keeping him down, even as you claw red lines into his face and skin, making sure he doesn't pin you instead. He seems to know where you’ll kick, the vital points you try and dig your fingers into. But you persevere, you get the upper hand when you get him face down in the grass and pin his arm behind his back, a knee in the soft dip of his spine.
He huffs against the dewy grass, a soft angry-laugh. “I'm going to make you regret this.”
“Oh yeah?” Your tanto knife looks deadly against the skin of his throat, and he stills. “Repeat that for me.”
“Your Lord–”
“Can you not imagine any woman’s choice or actions being independent of anyone? What about my Lord? If you've  forgotten, he’s a demon. He’d care less about me killing some human than whether it’s going to rain in the coming days.”
“Guess you don't know how crucial rains are for rice growing.”
“Save me the metaphors.” You huff. You tap the knife against his neck as you speak, if only to make him flinch.
“You know? I used the little blade on more men than I have demons. Isn't that something?”
“...I bet you don't even know how to use that.”
“That's for you to figure out. Try me. And do I really have to know how to use a blade to be able to stab you?”
“Your Lord-”
“I call him that out of gratitude and habit, but he is not my Lord.”
“You still must obey him.”
“Because he offers me protection, shelter, food, whatever else I could need. Mostly, because he is a demon.
“ou and I are on two very different boats, in two very different waters. So. you’re going to get up, and pick up the things you dropped. You will walk in front of me. You will not speak and if you even try to pull a stunt like that again, I will make you bleed. How much depends on what you do, but you will bleed. Understand?”
And it takes him a moment to quell the hate in his eyes and swallow, but he jumps as your blade digs in, red dripping down, and stutters out a “Y-Yes.”
“Good. Thank you. You can do just that.” You stay close, in case he tries to get some distance on you for a hit or grab, but he just does as you told him, hateful eyes cast to the floor, and starts walking.
You follow him back down to the inn. You don't sheath your tanto.
Tumblr media
You don't parade Takashi through the streets, but enough people stop in their tracks to stare at the way Takashi walks in front of you, face stormy and pace brisk. He probably did that to spite you to run after him, but again, you’re used to traveling so it is no issue for you.
In no time at all you reach the inn, and Numachi-san is already pacing the entrance, wringing her hands in worry, she rushes up as she sees you two approach.
“I’ve had a few people come up to the inn already to tell me something odd has happened. J-Jaken went with the Lord into town and should be back soon. Rin is here…So is everything alright?” She rubs at the side of her neck, like theres a kink there. You shake your head.
Word does travel fast in small places. “Everything is fine.” You had long put away your tanto when you entered the village, but kept it in your sleeve, flashing it whenever Takashi looked back.
“We got the rice and the fish–”
“I would like to sit inside and rest, if I may, Numachi-san,’ Takashi cuts you off. His face is cool and he doesn't look at you.
“I’m tired from walking all the way from my home to here with such a heavy load. Will you let me inside?” Her dark eyes flash between you two, her hands worrying that spot on her neck. She meets your eyes, and you shake your head, warning her with your eyes.
But she looks back to Takashi-san, the tense way he waits like a coil about to spring, and sighs. “Perhaps… just for a cup of tea, before you go?” You throw your hands in the air, and stomp after him as he walks in.
He settles down, and Numachi-san is ready with the tea quick enough. But he goes on talking, or stalling rather, and you’re not stupid enough to wonder what he is stalling for. You glare at Numachi-san, who only has the courage to meet your eyes for a few seconds at a time, keeping her head bowed to the young man.
For someone who might’ve killed her husband she sure is meek.
“I’ve never seen the inside of this place, but it's wonderful, Numachi-san!”
“Thank you, Takashi-san.”
“I mean, I was just a child when the last owners, erm, moved on, but the building seemed damaged beyond repair. The fact that you restored it, and ran such a thriving business before the demon attacks increased–just proves what a dedicated woman you are.”
“You’re much too kind Takashi-san.” She refills his cup and he sends you a pointed look, like you’re supposed to feel something other than annoyance. Out of the corner of your eye you see Rin poke her head into the room. She’s not sly though, and Takashi catches note of her.
“Is that the child that accompanies you? What's your name girl? You don't have to be–”
“You have no right to speak nor look at her, and I suggest you leave before you dig yourself in any deeper,” you shut that down real quick, and Numachi-san’s shoulders hunch up to her ears.
But he just tilts his head at you, like he’s looking at a bug.
“Speaking without being spoken to, such base manners. I’ll be sure to bring this other point up to your master. I hope you’re teaching the girl to be better than that.”
“Am I supposed to be scared?” You take the pot closer to your side so Numachi-san can't refill his cup, knowing he wont do it himself.
“And it's still better than a prick who derives his worth from how well he can be served by a woman. Or one who attacks another from the back because their pathetic ego was injured.”
Takashi-san slams his cup down. “Better than one who doesn't know their place or lot in life.”
“What place? What lot?” You laugh. “If anything, take your own words to heart. You just can't handle seeing someone else living your dream while you waste away in a place like this. You can't handle your fragile ego being challenged by a woman, no less. That's why you attacked me.”
You grin as he leans forward. Your voice drops to a hush, a loud whisper. “I'll be sure to savor it more in your place when we leave.” You see Rin dart away from the corner of your eye, gone like a leaf in the wind. Good. Better she doesn’t see this anyway.
“You are so insolent. Your Lord allows this?”
“And you're a simp. Always mentioning ‘my lord’ this, or ‘my lord’, that. It’s like you’re the one that’s in love with him.”
“I’m going to–”
“What? Try me, make my day!”
“Please!”  Numachi-san cuts in, waving her hands between you two. “Let's just settle down now. There's no need to get so agitated. Look, the tea is getting cold.” She tries to take the teapot back from you but you don’t let her.
“I would love to Numachi-san, but someone has to tell this one that their manners are uncouth,” He grits, “Befitting of a low class sow.”
“Aha, you’re mad,” It's childish but you poke your tongue out. “And jealous too. It's not a very pretty look, you know?”
“Be quiet!”
“Make me!”
“What is going on here?! ” Both of you turn, and Jaken stands there in his bug eyed glory, that eerie two headed staff in his hands, eyes narrowed. Takashi immediately gapes– for a resident of a town stalked for decades by a demon, he acts like he never heard nor saw one of one until this very point.
“Human.” He points the staff at you, and both Numachi-san and Takashi flinch. “Explain.”
“The boy overstays his welcome,” you drawl, “though he was never welcome to begin with. He took it upon himself to be my chaperone and insists on staying to meet the Lord.”
“Ha!” He squawks, and Takashi’s eyes dilate at the sound.
“You? Meet the Lord?”
“I just…I-I just wanted to, to explain! Yes, explain what happened today. His servant nearly drowned in the streams–”
“I did not–”
“And t-the silence… I just wanted to advise the Lord that maybe it's best that she remains…here. Women aren’t suited for manual labor, you know…?”
“I know?” Takashi pauses, gulps. “So I just…wanted to offer my services, is all!”
Jaken doesn’t look impressed, but he rarely does. “You’re trembling in front of an imp, and you think you can be of service to the Lord?” Takashi shoots you a baleful glare as you snort, and draws his shoulders up.
“Yes. Yes I do.”
You see Takashi-san tremble when Jaken smiles, perfectly too wide and uncanny, and on purpose. “Well good. You can plead your case to the Lord then, he is here.”
“What?”
“And that's my cue to go.” You rush to your feet, and don't bother with bowing or muttering your goodbyes.
“Wait, excuse you?! Where are you–”
“Human–”
“Don't forget to tell the Lord how you tried to pin me down on the banks. And everything that we’ve said to the other. Everything.”
“Running, are you?” He grins. It shakes at the edges.
You just smile, really smile; Wide, and with your teeth, gleeful and mischievous, pulling at your cheeks and crinkling your eyes.
“You know, you’re much more tolerable, and cuter, when you keep your mouth shut. Remember that.”  And as the confusion settles on his face you go.
You hear the sliding door rushes open, and you disappear around the corner quick enough not to be seen. You can hear the muted, frightened, greetings of the two you left, but that's none of your concern anymore. Numachi-san should have never let them in and he shouldn't have been such a sexist prick.
You bathe first, the day's dirt and sweat sloughing off your skin in the water, and you wash quickly, eager to soak in the hot springs. You clean off the dried blood on your ankle. You dip your toes in when you’re ready, it's a touch too hot, but nothing unbearable, and you dip into the water with a wince, then a sigh. The heat smooths away your aches and pains, and you sit in the spring, content.
You don't know how long it is, but moments later, you hear banging, and rushing, yells. A man’s voice, Takashi-san. It doesn’t sound like he’s being murdered. The Lord is efficient enough you wouldn't hear him scream. Maiming it is then. Takashi-san sounds high pitched and afraid, and you listen to the sounds of crashing and screaming throughout, and then, silence. Nothing.
Nothing else. Rin appears, comes over to the edge of the pool you're in, toiletries in her hand.
“...You okay?” she nods. “Where did you go earlier?” She points back inside. “Went to get L-Lord Sesshoumaru.”
“That was you?” A nod. “He was actually c-close b-by.”
“...Okay. Okay, thank you Rin.” She hums when you pet her hair. “That guy was being a j-erk.”
“Yeah, he wouldn’t stop going on and on about what I should or shouldn’t do, because my Lord,” You groan and roll your eyes. “What happened after I left?”
“That guy told on you,” her breath is hardly above a murmur, but steady.  “You were in trouble at the stream. Wood went silent so he followed. Fought with you. He said you, y-you shouldn’t be on your own. No common sense. He said he could h-help.”
“Ha! Stupid.” You roll your shoulders as she lays out the towels.
“And what did our noble and regal Lord say to all that?” She gives you a look like you don't know exactly what he did.
“Are you alright?” She nods again, then thinks, shrugs. “The Lord l-looks upset. He took his ear.”
“...I asked about you. Did you eat, bathe already?”
“Yeah. A-And Numachi-san gave me snacks. So it's your turn n-now.” You smile at your girl as she reveals what she hid in the bundle of towels, a cup of tea and some mochi.
“Wow, wonder where Numachi-san got Mochi from in a place like this.”
“She made it.” Oh. Maybe that's what the rice was for. Rin supplies. She sets down her wares and pats your arm.
“Don't take too long, or you’ll faint. Dinner w-will be ready soon.” And her feet pitter patter away.
You don’t know how long you speak there, but the light dims from what peaks under the rag, oranges and red slowly bleeding into evening. You hear nothing save the water and crickets and the wind, Jaken on the inside scurrying to do who knows what. Rin said that dinner should be done soon, so Numachi-san is fine, and the Lord was either in his room, or long gone, back to find whatever demon was plaguing this town. You sink deeper into the water.
When you open your eyes, Sesshoumaru is there at the brim of the spring, staring at you.
You gasp, and choke, consequently.
He watches you flounder, as you hack up the water you inhaled.
“Almost drowning twice in one day. A record for you.”
“Not on purpose!” you flick water at him and speckle his cheek with water drops. But he’s unperturbed.
“I heard,” he drawls. “That something happened at the stream.” and his eyes, so they dilate?
“Tell me.” He leaves no room for rebuttal or refusal. So you tell him what happened at the Old man Tianga’s place, at the stream. You don't mention the odd silence, mainly because he didn't ask yet.
“....The boy is not wrong in what he said. But he put hands on my belongings; That warrants punishment.”
“Belongings?”
“You are my servant, and he deigned to put his hands on you.” He takes your wrist and pulls your arm, gingerly, out the water. He turns it, this way and that, and only now do you see the faint marks from your scuffle in the banks.
“They’re not that bad.”
“The problem is that they are there at all.” His eyes are bright, and angry. You only know that lookin passing–whenever you would annoy him too greatly. This is ten times that.
“Not only that, he insulted you, b y extension me. And to have the audacity to ask to be my disciple? I should have taken his hands and his tongue, not two simple fingers.”
“And an ear. Which I wonder about…you were lenient with him, my Lord.”
“I was,” he lets your arm slip back into the warm waters.  “The child was watching.”
“Ah.” Rin was no stranger to gruesome sights- they were unavoidable with a demon samurai Lord for a master, but at least he had some discernment, if not compassion for the young girl.
“So why the ear?”
His jaw is tight, as is his voice. “The boy didn’t heed his senses. He continued to spout nonsense.”
“Haha! That's what you tell me all the time.”
“Yes, those inane tales you drivel on about… at least they serve a purpose.”
You cross your arms on the lip and rest your arms in their cradle, looking back at him. “What, entertaining Rin and staving off her nightmares?”
“No. Beyond that. You speak of the future–that I will live to see.”
“Like, wait what? That's… hundreds of years in the future, Seshoumaru.” You almost slap a hand over your mouth over the lack of honorifics, but he doesn't correct you.
“I will still live to see it. These things you speak of, skyscrapers, electricity, automobiles, public parks and libraries and sprawling cities. I will be witness to it all.”
You didn't think he paid any attention to the things you rambled about. You didn't think he listened. Or cared. “So what am I, like, your seer?”
“Exactly.”
“...I never thought of it like that.”
“Dense.”
“Stop calling me that! I am not dense.” You huff and pout, but he ignores you, as he often does, choosing instead to lean over, looking into the waters for…something.
“You’re injured.”
“Huh?” What? He just saw your arm. It takes you a moment to realize he probably means your ankle.
“Oh yeah.” How did he know? You almost forgot. By now the wound wasn't so fresh, not yet scabbed over and just starting to heal. Soft and pink and shiny.
Sesshoumaru looms over you.. “Show me.”
“...?” How? Are you supposed to do a handstand underwater? He sighs, annoyed, and reaches down–
And suddenly he has you by the collar, pulling you up and out of the water to sit at the brim. You splutter, but he pays it no heed, just crouching down so he could inspect your ankle closer. Despite the furrow to his brow he sets you down so gently.
“It's fine, it's already started to heal.”
“That's for me to decide.”
“Oh really, of course, of course. Tell me when to breathe too, I’ll keep your words in mind.” And, quicker than you could blink he reaches for your ankle, pulling you forwards a bit. You almost topple back into the waters, your third drowning of the day, but right yourself in time, casting a glare at Sesshoumaru. Your ankle is bird thin and fragile looking against his pale hand. This touch too, is careful.
You're still technically in your underclothes. If he lifts your leg up any higher he's going to see something.
He just…stares at the wound, soft from the water, something pointed and uncanny in that gaze. He looks at it, this way and that under the mellow torchlight, evening deepening into a darker hue of blue, sunlight gone.
“I should have taken both his hands…”
“I think that would have been a tad too much.” Yeah, he's a prick but you didn't want his life ruined.
Sesshoumaru hums under his breath, a light note. “You defend him?”
“Like any good samaritan will do,” you respond cheekily. “Plus, he’s the only son of old man Taiga, so he stands to inherit the rice paddies.”
“So?” The tone he uses is still light, but dangerous for its levity.
“If there's no more rice how will they make any mochi? This is the best we found in recent months.” You reach behind and snatch a piece from the plate Rin left you, humming at the treat.
“I can forgive any slight so long as I’m awarded treats in return.”
“Glutton,” he pushes out a breath. “I knew you were never loyal.”
Oh, was that a joke? You laugh. “What can I say? I have needs that must be satisfied.”
As he looks over your ankle you take the moment to look over the contours of his hand, the elegant wrist disappearing underneath the robe, the crips collar of his Kimono. Even here, like this, he looks so unruffled.
“Needs?” And he lifts your ankle higher. “Do I not account for them all?”
“...My most pressing and immediate ones.”
“Hm. And seeing as those are met, which others might I satisfy?”
Oh.
And your heart pounds into overdrive.
He brings your ankle closer to his face… and licks.
You flinch back in reflex, but that only amounts to an inch within his grip. His eyes flash over to you, but when he meets no more resistance his tongue darts out again, lapping over the wound.
It doesn't hurt– his tongue is wide and flat, and thin, like a dog, you think, and just swipes over, cleaning the skin almost. But it feels weird, and you’re puzzled, and his grip tightens as you flinch back.
You’re trying not to tremble, but when his mouth moves to the thin part on the back of your ankle you gasp. There's a pause he takes, before he bites down. It's just a nip really, but you gasp again, and then his teeth are trailing, up, up your calf– then he stops.
Well, only for a second. His hand moves, smoothing along the soft skin of your leg, underneath the wet cloth. It slides to your thigh, and he pulls up and back. He slots forward in the open space between your thighs, leans forward, and suddenly you're folded up tiny against the grass and his chest, one leg on his shoulder and the other pretty close.
You squeak, hands flying to his shoulders, while his nails trail softly over the back of your thigh, raising goose flesh, creeping on dangerous territory.
Something soft rumbles in his throat.
“You still smell like that boy…”
“O-oh?” you squeak, breathy.
“I don’t care for it.”
“Well, it wasn’t like it was on purpose.”
"I should hope not." And he moves even closer. The spikes of his armor press into you and he's all around you--His hair a curtain that blocks off the outer world, a few strands dipping into the springs. Like earlier, he goes straigh to your neck. He trails the tip of his nose along the conturs of your neck, the under curve f your jaw, dipping down to your collarbone and starting the journey over again. Almost like he's nuzzling you.
He takes slow, deep breaths through his mouth. He breathes in, holds it...and releases it steadily, like he's trying to make your scent stick to the back of his throat. You smell nothing on him but cold, and metal, and silk. But beneath that frigidness is something...softer. Not gentle, more refined, almost. fresh, not unlike linene, or fresh cut greenery. You like it.
But you can't really move, and it's getting hot, and not in a good way. You feel his weight, yes, but it feels more imposing thatn comforting. The gurgle of the water is all you can hear; that and the blood in your ears.
If you scream now, no one will hear you.
"Wait, wait," you gasp, your voice a pitiful breath. "I can't...wait a moment." For a second you think he's not going to move, he presses closer into you, further pushing the breath from your lungs. But with a growl deepening in his throat, he moves away.
You can't help feeling like his gaze is accustaory when he looks at you
"You breath is scarce. Calm yourself."
"I am calm."
"Hm." And he takes your wrist, presses his thumb to your veins. For a minute you think he's going to slide his wrist across yours in that soothing motion, he moves to, but he doesn't. Its disappointing.
"No. Your pulse is too quick." He lets you go. "I can smell your lust. But above that, your fear. I told you, I wont have a tearful servant girl in my bed. You must be willing or not at all."
He rises to leave, but you panic, leave, dont leave---you're confused between the two. But you grab onto his sleeve, and he stops.
"Im not...Im not scared of you, not exactly...not really."
"I can--"
“Just--!! I don't understand. Why do you want me? What do you get from me?” You scoot back.
“Everyone keeps calling me your concubine or wife but I want to hear you. You said I was your seer, but what is that? Is that all you want from me? I don’t think it is.” Beads of water stumble down the cradle of his jaw, and you watch them instead of his eyes.
“You said 'willing or not at all'… Why do you care so much if I'm willing? You can just take.”
“There's no pleasure to be had when it’s forced,” he says. “And there is no need for force. You wouldn’t have come to my room if you weren’t enticed.
“And are you enticed?”
“I am. But that's not the issue here.”
And you think he’s going to sigh harshly, glare, or worse yet, leave. You don't want him to leave now. You see his furrowed brow and his waning patience, and you want to huddle into yourself against the brisk cold he’s sure to blow your way.
And he does sigh, but he doesn't leave. He lends back, and lands you back your space. “Then what is?”
"You're going to listen to me?"
"Yes."
"...Why?"
"Because I want to."
The emotion that swells in your breast makes you duck your eyes, if only to hide the tears that have suddenly, embarrassingly, sprung. "Does a mountain need to heed the clouds?"
"The clouds dictate the skies. Even mountains are weathered by storms, and thrive in sunlight." He extends an open hand to you. "No more of this timidness. Speak plainly."
And so, you try.
“....I know this world is different from mine. In just the way I’m perceived. I am not your servant, your steward, or a disciple. I am not a companion, but a concubine. A wife if I’m lucky.” You snort.
“....But I’ve always been more than just my body, my Lord, and I do have my pride, meager though it may be. I've never belonged to anyone but myself. Whether this pride is at odds with you depends on your answer,” you sigh.
“I’ve named so many titles already. But what exactly am I to you?”
—------------
Torment. Lovely. Inferior. Endearing. Mine. Mine.
Damn instincts. Instead he asks, “...What need is there for specifications?”
“Forgive me my Lord, but…it is needed. What I am dictates what I can give.” You fumble with your hands, before clasping them together and holding them between your thighs, where he was moments prior. He should be back there, lapping at the slick dripping from your core, tasting it, tasting you but--- Ah, you're speaking. You said something. He has to listen.
“What do I give that is of value to this group? To you? Actual value, not those silly stories. I can neither set up camp quickly enough nor forage, fish or hunt better than the others can. My etiquette, or lack thereof is obvious. I'm much too insolent, in Jaken’s words. I take care of Rin and I love the girl to death but she’s mostly independent... She prefers Jaken anyways.”
Rin, who you took under your care and nurture, The same girl who could barely look him in the eyes or utter a sentence running in the middle of a dilapidated, haunted town to find him, for you.
“...So what do I offer you, that makes it so that I’m pulling my weight here? I don’t want to be useless.” And I don't want to be coddled either, he hears the unspoken words. So he answers you.
“Spring wears
A cloak of mist.
A thin fabric,
For the mountain breeze
Would, doubtless, disarray it.”
Your brow furrows.  “I don’t–”
“An exercise in subtlety,” he remarks. “And an answer to your question.” He gestures. “Go on.” Ariwara again? So you reply,
“In my yearning
I am fading completely as
The morning dew;
This morning to arise
Was beyond me.”
He ‘tsk’s’. “Again, with the dew?”
“I mentioned it, what, once last night? You can't fault me.” You say it a bit too defensively; You wish he would just answer you, or leave you be, but he does not. You just have to stay there and listen as he recites, your breath stuttering when his hand moves to your face, a finger over a cheekbone, nothing more.
“More even than the dew
From an illustrious house come
This chrysanthemum, so
The flower’s Mistress
Will live longer still, I believe.”
Chrysanthemums… Sunlight?
“The colour of this flower
Has already faded away,
While in idle thoughts
My life goes by,
As I watch the long rains fall.”
He responds back, just as quickly,
"At Yoshino River
Waves crash high above the rocks
The rushing water
Swift as your
Lodging within my thoughts."
“...I nearly drowned today my Lord, is that not inappropriate?”
“Something more tasteful then,” he comments.
“If it be so, Then so be it
I thought once, but
As white snow falling,
With the passing day
My yearning grows ever stronger.”
There's no mistaking the context of his words. But also not the roiling emotions in your heart. You reply,
“...An ancestral home
It is not, so
Towards me why
Is his heart
So cold and distant?”
His body language goes stiff, the ease in which he held himself something you hadn't noticed until it was gone. You are sorry to see it.
“...Don’t respond so hastily if you don't want to be answered in the next breath,” you exhale. You could wonder at your own audacity, and you might have imagined it, but he pauses before he recites another.
“A secret it is, but
When I feel love rise,
From leg wearying
Mountains, the moon
Sets out, and so do I.”
“...My Lord, please, don’t.” You don’t even know what he’s asking,  but he’s running his fingers over your neck, the dip at the base and pressing onto the mark he left. It makes you shiver. You notice it for a soothing habit, and it makes you wonder. But he continues.
“This world of men
Is such a place:
The gusting wind,
Invisible, as she I’ve never seen
And yet do love.”
“My Lord, w-wait--”
“Do you wish to reply?” He’s just petting you with that stray finger, and stuck between your passion and hesitance, you can't speak.
“...I, I just…” he hums a note, too low to be anything more than a vibration in the air.
“Night deepens
With the sound of calling deer,
And I hear
My own one-sided love.”
“It's not!” You rush, your hand coming to the one at your throat. You lean forward. “It's not!”
“Then why this hesitance? Why do you care so greatly for the words of others?”
How do you explain that kind of fear, that kind of insecurity, just like that? “...I’m scared that their words will prove right. That I'll just be another woman of circumstance.”
“You’re unlike any woman nor demon I’ve encountered in this era. If I haven’t killed you yet, what makes you think I would now?”
“...I’m scared of more than just death, at your hands any less. I’m wary of your ire, and the slow rot of my self under domestic subservience,” you admit. It feels like being flayed alive.
“You were never subservient,” He shuts that down. “Why would you start now?”
Why would you start now?
…Yeah. Wait, why would you?
"What...?" Wait...
“I can barely keep you tethered and quiet in one place for an hour, or keep enough sense in your thick skull to keep you out of danger. If anything, this is more work on my end,” he drawls. “So again, why would you start trying to be competent now?”
You start laughing, big, belly shaking laughs that have you holding yourself together. Yeah...yeah! Why would you?
And that, that realization, that relief, is like a breath of fresh air. What were you even worried about?
“What is this–”
You rush forward, laughing still, lacing your fingers in his hair and pulling him down into a kiss.
>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>
You rest easily, in his futon, under his sheets. He has no pressing need for slumber, now or otherwise, so he’s never used the bedding here. He regrets it almost–There so much you’re missing, that you don’t know. You deserve a nest–full of pillows and quilts and whatever strikes your fancy. Clothing articles, his, naturally. You don't have the same sense of smell but he’s sure it would be just as effective. Because even now, you burrow into his side and sigh contentedly in your slumber.
A new bruise sits above the one he first gave, darker, and larger. They’re joined by others, varying colors of bruises. It's not a mating mark–not yet. He plans to give you it when you mate, so that the pleasure could override the worst of the pain.
It doesn't matter if you're human or not. He has decided that he wants you. He finds the emotion is reciprocated, and thus, you are his. Honeysuckle scent and annoying behavior and all.
He smooths over the faint marks with a finger, under the curve of your jaw and your parted, kiss swollen lips. Your lashes flutter under his touch, ghosting over your skin and the scent glands right beneath your ears. He bit here too. Not as deep as he'd like.
You just sigh deeper, but dont wake, a steady wash of honey over him as he presses against the glands. He can still taste your skin on his tongue, the way you shuddered.
“Sleep here,” he demanded. But it was not forceful, because he knew you would agree.
“And what about Rin?”
“Tell her, and come hither after she falls asleep then.” He clicked his tongue. “You and your fretful worries…”
But he doesn't mind it. A faint scent of milk lays over your skin, and it’s endearing, for how familiar it is. It doesn't vex him as greatly as it should.
Alpha children are born with more mild versions of their scents, which mature quickly with age. The mild sweet milk scent fades a few weeks after birth. For betas, it stays a year or so, before settling into something bland and weak. For omegas, the scent lasts up to teenhood. Rin has barely finished her first decade.
Two omegas under his ward. What are the chances? He dreads the day of her maturing, twice as many demons following their trail. Perhaps you were right in wanting you both to learn swordplay. If anything, a person should be their own last line of defense.
And you two are especially weak.
He has to tamp down on that dark satisfaction that builds, in your case particularly. Rin is a child, he will ensure her safety and comfort. But you…He has to remind himself despite his instincts. You are not some soft, pampered omega mate he keeps in his abode. Your weakness is not what draws him to you. And neither will it ever, he detests the weak and aimless. It's your fearlessness he favors. Your mind, thick as it is.
A man threatened you and you didn't simper, you pinned him down and drew your blade against his throat. He’s disappointed in you that you didn't decide to draw blood, but he’ll take care of that on your behalf. The thought of the boy and his murky, spicy scent over yours makes his eyes bleed red. He insulted you. Put his hands on you. He cannot let this insult be.
He needs a proper lesson. So he slips away from your lovely warmth, your aroma, and slips outside.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It's easy to find the salt and musk trail of the boy, even easier to walk his way to the rice paddies. But the boy isn't there– He hears the struggling breath of an old man, and four sets of gentle, even breathing. Not there. There's a hidden path leading from the house, down to the streams and into a secluded area. It looks like only one set of feet made this nothing trail, and it's exactly who he’s looking for. Though, It's still close enough that should he scream, people will hear.
He plans to be quick.
He’s training, with a bamboo sword that must have been hand made, decent, despite its crudeness. Sweat and blood and the stressed scent of pain lacerates the air, his skin flush with exertion. He practises a basic set of moves, efficient, but lacking proper stance.
He stumbles, and when he pauses, Sesshoumaru notices he leans towards the side missing an ear, bloody bandages around his hands, gripping onto the makeshift weapon. He lacks talent, and manners, and dicipline, but holds no small amount of tenacity. Which unfrtunately will remain unrewarded.
Sesshoumaru stalks. He doesn’t crouch nor hide–he moves too fast for the discernible, human eye as he circles his victim, looking for the best angle to slice him. His nails and teeth lengthen.
The wind stills and the animals silence themselves. Insects no longer cricket or tribble, and the birds still, ready to burst into flight at the slightest movement.
The night is at standstill. But he is not the reason why.
He steps away. His blade slips out its sheath like water poured out a glass. It rests above the pale throat of its target, the faintest red line rising underneath its honed edge.
The demon raises its hands, a Naga; White scales that would stand out in the pitch darkness, he must use demonic energy to hide himself. The scent of it is thin and acrid, rot-sweet. An alpha, but a weak one.
It spreads it's raised hands, not in surrender, but supplication. It tilts it's head down the slightest bit, even if it digs its throat deeper into the blade.
“You are the demon hunting this town.”
“That is I,” He expected a thin, hissing voice, but the naga sounds like any normal human male. Again, weak.
“And you are the Lord of the Western Lands, the Great Daiyoukai Sesshoumaru. I am honored to be in your presence.”
“And foolish.” Skin parts like butter under the blade, dripping a thin red.
“I let you live so long as you stayed out of my sight. Now you lose your head.”
“Ah ah!” It tries to placate. “I truly apologize, my lord, but If anything, I was hunting here first. You came to me.” It hisses low as Sesshoumaru presses. “And you came to meet your end.”
“Didn't you come here for the boy?” The naga points back. “I’ll, I’ll back off! I was planning to eat him and one of his sisters, or two, but I’ll go! You need not see my face again!”
He seems a pretty weak demon.
But the luminosity of those teeth and scales belied the cowardice It had shown. The wreckage left in the town discredited it further.
Strangely, there is soot over the wrecked buildings, like something had been burned. This would not be difficult to believe, if a demon trespassed into a home and knocked over lighted oil, but there is no sign of fire damage around the buildings; The grass is still fresh and green around it. The buildings are a few years old, yes, but if there had been a fire there would be more pressing signs, Jaken stressed.
“The female head of the staff spews water, and the old male head spews fire, so I know the destruction both could wreck,” the imp pondered. “All the buildings have soot, but very slight burn marks. With how close and tight the community is, there would have been more obvious tells. No one in this town seems to have any breathing problems, or limps, and with these many ‘fires’, this town should have been burnt down, no matter that they live so close to a mountain stream,” He squawked.
“Something is suspicious with this town…”
And he was looking at that something.
“Tell me, why should I not kill you now and ensure that future myself?” A hiss slithers in the Naga’s throat, but It doesn't bear It's fangs. It's tail slashes the air anxiously.
“Because…Because I have done you no wrong nor do I intend to.” The blade presses in and It fights, Sesshoumaru sees, not to lash out. It knows attacking means earning his ire, which is certain death.
In most cases, not yours.
“B-Because I have information!”
“Lower your voice,” he says in low tones. “What information?”
"You, you must swear not to kill me afterwards. I want your word as a samurai!"
"You have my word I wont kill you if its not useless." He gripes. "Now speak or lose your life."
“That, that innkeeper…she's an omega as well.”
“The hag?” He can't even recall the color of her eyes, her head always bowed, let alone if her scent had the telltale sweetness of an omega.
“She’s human, and a widow.”
“Yes, and old, so the scent withers off to nothing. If some desperate alpha re-mated her, it might make a reappearance.”
“Re-mated,” he said. “She was mated by a demon?”
“Well, humans couldn’t mate with each other even if they knew how. Yes. That's why she was driven out her village, and came here.”
“And you made her a widow when you killed her husband.”
“I ate him for power, yes, he was very strong. And delicious."
Hm. She does show all the typical signs of an omega, if he recalls. He just can't imagine her paired with a demon. She should have more a backbone, if so. She seemed a pretty meek thing when he confronted her after the boy had ran from the inn.
The boy drips blood and tears, sobbing pitifully as he staggers from the inn, holding his parts. When Sesshoumaru turns the innkeeper is kneeling in seiza, trembling, head to her hands on the floor.
“M-My Lord–” He tosses her the cut off ear, still warm and dripping.
‘You stand to lose much more if you allow anyone else inside.”
“M-My sons are coming to visit me, tomorrow or the day after, my Lord.” More nuisances.
“I don’t want to see them. I don't want to catch a scent nor sound. Understood?”
“Y-Yes, yes, my Lord. Of course, My Lord.” And so he goes to you.
"And what of her children?"
“Her sons?" The naga's nose wrinkles. "They are hanyo’s, half bloods…disgusting, I know. One of them is a beta, and the other is an alpha.” It casts a knowing look. “So I suggest you keep your little omegas from wandering about too far.”
His blood spikes. Yes, he has the demon of this town at blade point, but it was a weak and a coward, and now there were two others, no matter that they were the innkeepers' sons, heading straight for the lot of you.
So he sheathes his blade. He turns and shows his full back to the demon, a blatant insult.
“The next time I see you will be the last. You have my word.”
“Well, I sincerely hope it wont be,” he can hear the relief in it's voice. “And, were you not stalking the boy…?”
“Take him, his lack of situational awareness is his own undoing.” He thinks. “But leave the rest of the family be. Just the boy. That and your life is the reward for your information."
“The only thing better than a daughter is an oldest son,” the naga laughs. He bows where his waist tapers into scales.
“And it's always good to live one more day. Thank you, my Lord.”
“I intend to know the name of the next demon I kill.”
“Oh, my name?” the naga grins, each tooth pointed sharp and gleaming.
“It’s Shingetsu Numachi.”

A/N: I used a lot more poetry in this one, but can you believe I cut it down? I wanted to add more but stuck with the ones that lent more to the plot. So I stood with the really romantic 'era accurate' poems (smh Sesshoumaru has to confess via poetry bc our mc really is that dense) lol.

Star Sanses x Gn! Reader
Word count: 1258 Might make a part 2 if people like this Ink belongs to Comyet Dream belongs to Joku Swap belongs to the AU community
Undertale + AUs Masterlist
You were currently waiting for Ink at the Doodle Sphere. You had promised him you would stop by and give him a visit sometime soon and now that you had some time on your hands you were going to drop in and spend some quality time together.  You just hoped he would show up in the next few hours since he didn't know you were visiting.
Your job in the multiverse was to make sure there wasn't too much destroying or creating at once, meaning you made sure the multiverse was in balance. You had been lucky that Error and Ink understood the concept of that. They didn't give you too much trouble when you had to intervene in their fighting, whether it was letting Error destroy a few AUs or stopping him from doing that.
You had sat down on the floor looking up at the seemingly endless papers floating above you. It always felt like an eternity waiting for Ink to come back from wherever he was. Sighing, you laid down and closed your eyes from the blinding yellow light and before you knew it, you had fallen asleep.
Ink's POV:
I had finally finished talking with Dream and Blue and now it was time to head back to the Doodle Sphere! I couldn't wait for (Y/N) to visit me. I wanted to get back 'home' as fast as possible so that I could prepare everything for us for when they came by. Even if it was a day or a few weeks before they come I wanted to make sure we would have fun and if I didn't do it now I might forget.
"Bye guys!" I waved at my friends before taking out Broomie and making a puddle of liquid before jumping into it.
Regaining my balance, I stretched and opened my eyes to see (Y/N) laying down on the ground with their eyes closed. I gasped 'Oh no! Are they injured? Did I get here too late?' I thought to myself before rushing over to them and dropping down to my knees next to them.
"(Y/N)?" I quietly called out and shook them carefully. They groaned and shifted. I let out a sigh of relief and shook them again. "(Y/N) wake up!"
"Huh? What is it Ink?" They batted my hands away and turned to glare at me while still laying down. "...Oh! Right, hello Ink! How long was I asleep for?" They asked. I felt a slight smile crawl up on my..lips? teeth corners??
"Hi (Y/N), welcome! I don't know how long you were sleeping for! I just got here. What are you doing here, anyway?" I asked them.
They stared at me for a moment before responding. "I came to hang out. Is this a bad time? I can come back later if that's more convenient for you." They answered.
Second Person's POV:
"Really?! This is a great time! We're gonna have so much fun!" Ink exclaimed happily and stood back up. "What should we do?" He asked you in excitement. He really had been looking forward to spending more time with you. It's been such a long time since you and he had hung out properly.
You stood up with him, thinking about what you two should spend your time on. "Hmm...That's a good question. How about we just talk for a bit until we figure that out? How have you been Ink?" You asked.
You and Ink talked for a few minutes until you heard a portal opening and closing along with harsh whispers. You both look to the direction of the sound to see Dream and Blue. They were speed walking towards you two.
"INK! YOU FORGOT YOUR VIALS" Blue yells and runs up to your friend, Dream right behind him.
"OH! Thank you, Blue!" Ink takes the vials off Blue's hands.
"Who's your friend, Ink? I've never seen them before." Dream questions while looking at you while Ink was throwing the vials over his shoulders.
"This is (Y/N)! They're my friend and I guess you could also call them a co-worker." Ink explains gesturing towards you with his hands.
You smile and wave at the two of them. "Hello, It's nice to meet you. Ink's told me a lot about you two, haha." You laugh out.
"IT'S WONDERFUL TO MEET YOU (Y/N)! CALL ME SWAP OR BLUE." He holds his hand out for you to shake, which you do. "INK HOW COME YOU'VE NEVER TOLD US ABOUT THEM?" Blue shifts his gaze onto your friend.
"I sorta forgot" Ink smiles sheepishly and scratches the back of his neck.
Dream giggles at his explanations and turns to you "I'm Dream, It's nice to meet you as well (Y/N), I hope we can get along." He also shakes your hand (though less aggressively than Swap).
Meanwhile, Ink was organizing his vials tuning out of your guys' conversation.
"Ink?" He heard (Y/N) ask. This got him to snap back into reality. Looking up, everyone was staring at him.
"Sorry, what? I wasn't listening." He admits.
"WE ASKED IF WE COULD HANG OUT WITH YOU TWO" Repeats Blue hopefully.
"If (Y/N)'s alright with it, then sure!" Ink responds and glances at you.
You agree to the request, and so the four of you start wondering what you should do. A few popular offers we're drawing as a group (bet you can guess who suggested this), going shopping, visiting a park and feeding the ducks in some AU, playing video games, baking, and truth or dare. You decided to start off with the video games since Ink could just paint a console and a TV into existence, which he did.
After all of you decided on a game, you played for what you would guess was hours since there wasn't really a way to tell time in the Doodle Sphere. All of you were having a blast playing together and finding new sides of each other being mad at the game because of their 'unbelievable losing streaks'. Dream had lost about 25 times now in total! He sighed and dropped his controller onto the couch Ink had painted at some point since the floor of the void wasn't all that comfortable. "This is hopelesssss!" He whined leaning onto Ink tiredly. Ink laughed and put his arm around Dream's shoulder, trapping him onto his side.
"There, there Dream." He comforted, then looked at you and Blue. "Let's do something else before Dream bursts into tears." He declared teasingly, earning a 'Hey!' from Dream.
"OF COURSE!" Swap stood up stretching his limbs. "WHAT DO WE DO NOW?" He asked.
You put your hand on your chin and looked at the ground in thought. "Hmm...I should probably get going, we could hang out again soon though! It's been fun."
"Already? But you just got here (Y/N)." Ink frowns and loosens his grip on Dream.
"Hey! I promise I'll drop by soon!" You promised him. "And if your friends are here, we can all hang out together again."
They all were pretty disappointed, you were fun to be around and it was a change to be with you as well instead of just the three of them.
"Alright (Y/N). You'd better come by soon again!" Ink threatened.
"YEAH (Y/N)!" Blue agreed and Dream nodded along with a hum.
They all bid their farewells to you as you left, hoping to see you soon again.

Sanhwa dream go brrrr
》 Pairing: Seonghwa and San x gn!reader 》 Genre: Fluff 》 Wordcount: 1,872 》 Rating: pg-13
Nets: @mirohs-aurora-society @othersideoutlawsnetwork @illusionnet
“OK! EVERYONE TAKE THEIR 30S! INTERMISSION IS COMING UP IN A FEW MINUTES!”
You and your coworkers nodded as your supervisor told you to shut down the front gate. After the front gate was closed, you headed towards the farthest backroom that the venue had to offer. Once you arrived inside, you went to your locker, grabbed your meal, and closed it before heading into the breakroom where the rest of your coworkers had already started their 30s. Some of them didn’t eat, which was fine. You found an empty chair, punched your meal ticket, and immediately started gobbling down your food.
Yeah you didn’t eat anything before leaving for work and you know it was going to be a long night.
“Hey. I got you some hot chocolate. Complementary and all that. Want it?”
You looked up to see your coworker extending their hand that held the hot chocolate. Normally, you didn’t like hot chocolate since the drink tasted too sweet for you. However, due to the fact that it was free, you accepted it. You thanked them and took a sip of it.
Boy were you in heaven.
You took deliberate sips with each bite of food you took. Before you know it, you had finished eating and you slurped down the entirety of your drink surprisingly. You checked the time on your watch.
You were only 10 minutes into your 30. What should you do now?
“Hey, guys. I’m going to go wash my hands then maybe walk around for a bit. Anyone want to join me?”
Most of them politely turned down your offer and you nodded in acknowledgement. You gather your things and stuff them in your locker once more so you can go ahead and walk around. You decided to walk around first since the lines for the bathrooms were too long and you were not about to wait for that long since you only needed to wash your hands. As you did your leisurely rounds, you decided to see what was going on in the seating areas of the venue. You climbed the stairs and looked around some more. A few cashiers that were working the wine stands saw you and waved hello. You waved back and offered them a polite smile before walking around some more.
This is when everything took a turn for the better.
In your midst of bobbing and weaving through the crowd, your eyes landed on a guy’s huge backside. He was standing next to another guy, whose frame was slightly lean yet his waist was as tiny as the first guy’s. Because you left your glasses at home, you had to get closer to see who these dudes were. You didn’t want to interrupt their time yet you couldn’t help your curiosity. Once you were at a distance that was close enough yet still far away from them, your eyes widened.
You’d recognize that huge backside anywhere.
WHAT THE HELL WERE SAN AND SEONGHWA OF ATEEZ DOING HERE?! AND IT’S ONLY THOSE TWO AS WELL!
As an Atiny, you’d never expect them to be in the same vicinity as you so it was natural of you to freak out and debate on whether or not you wanted to approach to simply say hi. You wanted to talk to them yet also remain respectful of their space. Muttering to yourself, you turned around and walked away. While you were talking to yourself, you looked up and saw that the line to the bathrooms shrank. You took the opportunity to head inside and wash your hands. Once you finished, you hastily exit the bathroom. In this moment, you hated being short. There were so many people exiting the bathroom and scurrying to get back to their seats or buy something to eat and/or drink that you felt like you were drowning in this sea of people. And that’s when it happened.
Your face rammed into a huge chest.
You let out a quiet curse and you were about to politely tell them to please watch where they were going (if they didn’t apologize) when you looked up. The words got stuck in your throat.
Of course the huge chest belonged to none other than Choi San of Ateez.
Your brain went into panic mode and you were about to be the one to apologize for running into him when his hands slowly raised up and landed on both of your shoulders. You froze upon feeling his touch and it didn’t help that he stood even closer to you, his face almost touching you as he stared you down with concern in his gentle brown eyes. You knew that he was just trying to get out of the way but still.
You didn’t understand why he felt it was necessary of him to stand so close to you.
“Are you alright?”
Your knees almost buckled upon hearing his soft voice in real life.
‘HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO BE OK WHEN YOU’RE LITERALLY RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME?!’
These thoughts run rampant in your head and it didn’t help that Seonghwa had an amused smile on his gorgeous lips while he watched the exchange between you two. You could only nod and say meekly, “Yeah I’m fine! Are you guys enjoying your time here?”
You internally cursed at the way you went into work mode as you said those words. The both of them looked at each other before looking back at you and nodding in approval. In that moment, you’ve never felt more validated.
The sea of people grew bigger and you saw it as a sign that intermission was almost over. You were about to inform them politely about it when your words got stuck in your throat once more. As San moved even closer to step out of the way, he did something unexpected.
His hands slid from your shoulders all the way down to your waist and he yanked your body closer to his.
‘WAS IT NECESSARY OF HIM TO DO THAT?!’
‘YES IT WAS!’
‘EVERYONE’S GOING TO QUESTION ME IF THEY SEE HOW RED MY FACE IS!’
‘DAMN IT!’
“Sorry. I just didn’t want you to be trampled by these other people.”
You could only nod as San spoke. He let go of you as soon as there was room so he could place a respectable distance between the two of you. He checked the time on his phone and a frown appeared on his face before putting it away and looking up at you.
“According to the program, I think intermission is almost done. It’s only supposed to be 20 minutes, right?”
You nodded in confirmation.
“Ahh. I see. Ok then. Seonghwa and I should get going then.”
“Mhm yeah that’s fine.”
You internally cringed once more at your choice of words and the three of you were about to part ways when Seonghwa stopped you. He grabbed your hand, smiled, and said, “Thank you for supporting ATEEZ!”
That was the final statement before the two of them walked back to their seats.
You stood there for a good minute or two, processing everything that has happened within the remaining duration of your 30. Speaking of which, you checked the time on your watch.
‘CRAP! I ONLY HAVE FIVE MINUTES UNTIL MY 30 IS UP!’
You sprinted back to the breakroom and hid there until your 30 was up.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The concert ended and as people filed out of the venue to get their cars or wait for their ubers, you and your coworkers were making sure that no one stole anything nor blocked people’s paths. As you were breaking down some of the stuff in the venue, you noticed two men talking with your supervisor. They looked familiar yet you couldn’t place your finger on who they were. You didn’t have time anyway since your coworker called for your help in stacking away some things. After everyone had gone home, you and the rest of your coworkers headed back inside the back room to gather your things. Since all of you finished fast, your supervisor allowed you guys to clock out early. Once all of you clocked out in unison, you walked out with them, only stopping at one point so you could wait for your uber.
You were supposed to get a ride from your roommate, but they cancelled at the last minute so now you had to wait for an uber. Your coworkers felt bad and offered you a ride, only for you to decline politely due to not wanting to impose. Feeling unsure, they wished you a safe trip home before getting into their cars and driving away from work. You were scrolling through your phone and you were about to book an uber when two shadows fell over you. Apprehension set in and you were ready to fight, only to falter for a moment when you saw who was standing over you.
“San? Seonghwa? What are you doing here?”
First, you ran into them during intermission. Now, they are here? Waiting for you? For what? So they could talk to you some more? As much as you wanted to talk to them, you were tired and you just wanted to go home. The two men smiled and knelt down next to you. San spoke up.
“Are you still on the clock?”
You shook your head.
“Waiting for a ride then?”
“Yeah. Sort of. I don’t know how long the uber will get here so you don’t have to wait with me.”
San chuckled while Seonghwa spoke up this time.
“Cancel your uber. We’ll take you home.”
HUH?!
“Oh! Well no that’s not necessary -”
“Come on. Please?”
You looked into Seonghwa’s big boba eyes that were filled with a slight desparation. As much as you wanted to spend time with them, you couldn’t. You were feeling bad enough for them since they waited for you. You would feel even worse if they offered you a ride home, especially if they were tired.
“I know what you’re thinking. Stop that. We don’t mind. After all, we wouldn’t want to pass up an opportunity to hang out with an Atiny who’s so hardworking.”
Why did San have to say it like that?! Your delulu was going through the roof.
“W-Well…”
“If you honestly feel bad about ‘wasting’ our time, you can make it up to us by sleeping over. We’re staying at the hotel across from the venue.”
HUH?!
“Oh you heard us, babe.”
WHAT?!
Internal panic was coursing through your veins. Not only were these fine men offering you to take you home, but they offered something better?! You figured your roommate would be fine by themself for one night.
“I don’t have any clothes to sleep in though…”
“You can sleep in one of my shirts.”
Your eyes widened at San’s statement. Before your brain could process, you meekly nodded and both men seemed satisfied. You were soon lifted into San’s arms while Seonghwa carried your things. San then kissed your cheek and smirked at your flustered expression.
“So cute.”
That was the last thing he said before the two men walked back to their hotel with you in tow.

Sweat dripped down your forehead, tickling your chin and neck as you gripped tightly the ring ropes, lunging your body forward with excitement. Even though you’d never admit it out loud, the adrenaline running through your veins during the intense boxing matches you attended every weekend made you feel more alive than ever. The way the two boxers threw fierce punches at each other was not exactly abiding by the game’s rules but no one around you seemed to care or even notice.
Living in a world where tomorrow might never come, these were the only moments you could be your most authentic self without the mask of acquiescence on. This world was sick, filled with horrors and demons, haunting you even in your dreams and watching your every step. However, this world was beautiful too, filled with secretly exchanged hopeful glances and little reasons to look up at the grey sky, praying better days would come.
What you were doing right now - smiling, screaming, the sole act of feeling was illegal but the thrill that filled your body was something you were willing to risk your life for. You had made your decision a long time ago - the rules didn’t matter to you anymore.
“A win for Black Serpent,” you heard the referee shout in an attempt to fight the hundreds of voices, drowning his own as the champion threw his red boxing gloves at the public. Blue and purple marks painted his features and his almost closed left eye was swollen but the triumphant grin plastered on his face told you, as usual, his injuries were not one of his problems.
Such a show-off, you thought when your friend waved at you from the ring, flexing his biceps proudly. It wasn’t surprising to you that he won tonight’s match. During the few years you’d known Jay, you’d never seen him lose. Having been a professional competitor in the past, as he had told you when you first met, the underground club’s matches were his way to escape the harsh reality and remember the good old times.
Plus, you’d seen the bags full of cash from bets after a successful night. After all, that was why you had become his “accomplice” or as he liked referring to you - his devil accountant. The job was simple enough and you didn’t mind the extra income - working as a bartender at the local bar came with its perks but with the money you made you could never possibly afford a place of your own, neither did it give you the comfort you could run away one day from this awful blackhole. So you gladly kept track of the bets for Jay’s matches and sometimes you even helped him train as you knew a thing or two about boxing yourself.
Tonight was no different. As you pushed your way through the crowd, collecting the bills, you saw a lot of familiar faces who greeted you warmly. At least some of them. Others - weren’t so friendly, swearing and even refusing to give you the money, overcome by anger after losing, but they knew better than to test you. No one wanted Jay’s wrath upon them.
“I think you forgot about me, angel,” you heard a raspy voice behind you just as you were about to call it a day and go to the locker room where Jay was waiting for you. Turning around, you were, to say the least confused. The man before you wore a grey hoodie over his head, hiding his features, and matching sweatpants, looking nothing like the usual visitors of the fight club. He was tall but muscular - you could see it even though his baggy clothes left much to the imagination. His broad shoulders and confident stance told you he was much more than he led you to believe. Was he another competitor?
Looking down at his stretched-out hand, you saw a few bills folded in his palm. A cat-like smirk formed on your lips. “Though night for you, huh?” “I don’t like voting in favour of my biggest competition,” the man laughed as you took the money, writing down the amount in your notebook. Jay was going to be pleased with tonight’s profit which meant another celebration for him and another babysitting gig for you.
However, the stranger’s words made you wonder what exactly his intention was. If he was telling the truth, then why bother betting if Jay was his next match? With his face engulfed in shadows and mystery, his aura alone sent shivers down your spine, alarming you for danger. Taking a step away from the man, you folded your arms before your chest. “What is your deal?”
He tilted his head to one side, regarding you quietly like a predator about to chase his next prey. Closing the distance between you in a matter of seconds, he leaned down to your right ear, whispering softly, his breath hot against your neck, “You’ll find out soon, angel.”
Still in a daze after your encounter with the stranger, you watched him pull away from you, shooting you one last mischievous smirk before diving into the crowd. Shaking your head, you let out a deep sigh.
Trouble always found its way to you.
Tumblr media
The deafening sound of the morning alarm, signaling it was time for everyone to go to work, rang in your ears as you walked to the bar where you worked during the day. The sun was still hiding under the horizon and the sky was painted in a mix of deep blue, purple, and orange. The streets were empty without a single soul in sight except you and the black stray cat that accompanied you every day on your way. It brought you a sense of comfort - to have a small friend by your side in these lonely times of the day.
Forming genuine connections with other human beings was almost impossible. There were many stories about heartless betrayals, travelling from person to person in this city of outlaws. Today’s friend could easily turn into tomorrow's enemy. However, right now this place was your everything and all you could do is learn how to survive. You’d heard of other faraway cities where people had it way worse than you did and were much more repressed by the titanic power of the Guardians. Sometimes you were even grateful you were surrounded by outcasts and criminals rather than a white sea of masks, pointing guns at your face.
Here, the inhabitants had found their ways of rebelling right under the government's nose without being noticed and the bar you were currently opening was one of their favourite places to do it. You'd witnessed hundreds of pieces of intel being exchanged for contraband and hundreds of unfulfilled plans for the future dying under the dim yellow lights. Still, no one gave up. That was the only rule everyone followed wholeheartedly - better surrender and lose your life than give up your dreams and hopes and become a dead man walking.
Pushing your thoughts away, you braced yourself for yet another day during which you had to take on the role of the oblivious bartender. Your job was to keep your mouth shut and eyes closed so when you saw one of your regulars enter the building, looking suspiciously around, you almost laughed.
“Good morning, Mingi,” you greeted him leaning on the broom you were swiping the floor with to take a proper look at him. His cowboy boots and hat, the usual, now shabby, long brown coat and the chains dangling at his neck as he walked slowly towards you gave away that he was meeting someone important today. The tall and lean man oozed confidence and threat just by standing and you were glad you were on his good side.
You'd met Mingi on your very first day as a bartender and quickly developed a soft spot for him. You weren't aware of exactly what he was doing except sitting around with you and being a menace to your boss but there were dozens of wanted posters around the city, including on the wall behind the countertop you mixed beverages on. The portrait drawing sure did him justice and you'd always been perplexed as to how the Guardians hadn't caught him yet.
In your eyes Mingi was good-natured and considerate, always asking about your day and throwing a joke or two to make you smile but you'd seen his nasty side too. That was why when he pulled out his pistol from his holster belt and placed it on top of the bar as he sat down on his usual spot, you felt shivers run down your spine.
“Don't worry, Y/N,” said Mingi, turning to look at you with a reassuring smile. If you got paid every time you heard him say this before destroying everything and everyone on his way, you would've been a millionaire. Sighing heavily, you walked over to him to stand behind the bar and took his pistol in your hands. Earning a surprised squeal from the man, you shook your head.
“You're the reason I'm not getting paid, cowboy. The amount of repairs we’ve made in a month is insane.”
“I'm sorry,” Mingi answered with a pout. Your boss wasn't going to be happy he came here again. You could only imagine the old man's smile as he put up these wanted posters. Hell, if he could turn in Mingi himself, he would be on cloud nine. “But be careful and don't shoot anyone.”
“You worry about yourself,” you sighed and pointed behind him. A young man was entering the bar, humming an unknown-to-you melody and carrying a bag over his shoulder. Sunglasses hid his eyes and a grin showed off his dimples.
“You didn't tell me your friend was such a beauty, Mingi,” the man whistled, eyeing you from head to toe after he removed his glasses, placing them on top of his head. You felt heat burn up your cheeks and you found it hard to hold his intense stare. Now being able to properly look at his face, some sort of recognition passed through your mind but you couldn't wrap your head around where you'd seen him before.
As the newcomer sat down next to Mingi, you couldn't stifle your laugh this time. They reminded you of a comedic duo from the comic books you used to read as a child, now long gone and turned into ashes, with the newcomer dressed casually in a black and white shirt, the fabric flowing around his body and a few buttons undone, showing his collarbones, and Mingi in his “official” attire with a serious look on his face and furrowed brows.
“Don't even think of laying a finger on Y/N, Wooyoung,” warned Mingi as your friend took out a white envelope from his coat’s pockets, handing it to the other man. A silent look, holding thousands of words, was exchanged by them before Wooyoung swiftly hid it under his shirt. “We can talk comfortably here. They won't say anything.”
“My lips are sealed,” you made a motion as if you locked them with a key and threw it in Wooyoung’s direction, earning a loud laugh from him.
“I like them. We should recruit them.”
“Absolutely no,” Mingi sternly refused, scolding both of you with a  glance. “Let's talk business now.”
Mindlessly washing the shot glasses and polishing them, you listened to the two men’s conversation, pretending none of what they said was surely granting them a death sentence. The images they described with pretty words and empty promises filled your heart with longing for a distant land where everything you'd ever dreamt of was real.
Where there existed other sounds - other than your heartbeat and the screeching alarm.
Where you could look up at the sky and see the stars - not the brown clouds of dust and pain.
Where emotions like sorrow and fear were replaced by joy and comfort.
So you listened and listened until you'd memorised every single sentence, hoping to dream of this new world tonight.
“The others will call for us soon. We just need to wait for a sign,” said Wooyoung, getting up from his seat and stretching his limbs. “San has a match tomorrow so if- no…when he wins, we'll have enough money for the next mission.”
A match?
A lightbulb lit up at the back of your mind as your memories took you to last night’s events. The stranger's words made much more sense than before and you were pretty sure you'd seen Wooyoung, lurking in the shadows and grinning after Jay’s final victorious blow. Keeping this information to yourself, you remained silent even when Wooyoung gave you a knowing look.
“His opponent is pretty tough and so is his coach…,” he trailed off, playing with his silver earrings, shimmering under the first morning rays.
“Good luck then. I'll see you in a week,” Mingi answered, shaking his accomplice’s hand as he too got up to leave. Glancing at you, he placed a few bills on the counter, way too many than needed. “For the special service today.”
“You don't have to-”
“And a bet for Black Serpent.”
“Jerk,” whined Wooyoung, rolling his eyes and earning another warning look from Mingi to whom you returned the pistol you took earlier. “I look forward to our little dance tomorrow, Y/N.”
Giving you a playful wink, Wooyoung took his bag and trailed after Mingi who was already striding to the exit, talking about manners and social norms which you found amusing.
At least, he didn't vandalise property today.
Tumblr media
“The underdog vs. the big champion, huh,” Jay hummed as he traced his finger over his opponent's name on the list, placed at the fight club’s entrance. The match was only a few hours away and unable to sleep from excitement, you'd dragged your friend to the ring to practice some extra time. You didn't know what kind of fighter San was but better be prepared than sorry later. The rumors about him going around in the underground club didn’t give you much information either - some said he was ruthless and vicious, others - just a showoff. One thing was sure though - he had an incredible win rate with his name at the top of the rank list at least once a month.
“Isn't it a bit cocky to call yourself the big champion,” you teased Jay as you pushed him inside the locker room so he could change into his practice clothes. You noticed one other locker was closed and were curious who else would've come here at that time of the day. Only champions and their coaches were allowed in when there wasn't a match.
“I know my worth, Y/N,” Jay sighed while rolling bandages over his wounded knuckles. The bruises from his last match were still visible on his body and you wondered if they ever healed. You also mentally noted he had cut his hair down to a buzzcut again. He was serious about tonight then. Not that you expected anything different. San was the only person who could challenge him for his title. “I'm not a loser.”
“Sure, now get up. We have a lot of work to do.”
“Jay, cover-up,” you shouted while monitoring your friend’s warm-up match, feeling your nerves slowly getting to you. You weren't exactly surprised when you found out the other fighter in the club and Jay’s opponent was the stranger you’d met the other night and of course, Wooyoung was his cornerman and manager.
San’s presence turned coaching Jay into a challenge, unlike any other time. His movements were practiced and calculated, his punches swift and precise. The white tank top he was wearing revealed his toned body and well-defined muscles and made you stare more than to your liking. His sharp features and handsome face mixed with his professionalism were a weapon San used well on the ring since you could see Jay was intimidated probably for the first time. Wooyoung’s annoyingly proud smile didn't help either.
Blood was dripping down San’s chin from a cut, gifted to him by Jay after one of his blows, and sweat formed on his forehead as he counterattacked, delivering a strong punch on your friend's face. Their match resembled a passionate and intimate dance that you weren't supposed to witness. Their pride and skills were on the line.
“Parry, Jay,” you once again yelled and seconds later the final bell rang, putting an end to their spar before your friend could react, taking a painful hook from San. Getting up from your chair, you went up to the ring and handed Jay a water bottle which he splashed on his face with a groan. You praised yourself for taking your first aid kit before leaving your apartment. If he was so beaten up right now, you didn't want to imagine what both of them were going to look like by the end of the night.
“You sure know a lot about boxing, Y/N,” San said, breathing heavily as he took his gloves off, throwing them at Wooyoung. It was the first time he addressed you directly today and you were taken by surprise when he jumped off the ring, coming closer to you. His face was glistening and his brown eyes were burning with passion you'd never seen before. Sure, Jay enjoyed fighting but you knew it wasn't the same as it used to be for him. San, however, had the eagerness to learn and win as a newbie even though his skills made you believe he was as good as a coach. Maybe even better than most. “Where did you learn?”
“Let's say I'm very observant,” you answered quietly, trying to avert his attention away from you and the topic. Still, the sting in your heart, forming as memories flooded your mind reminded you of the past you were so willing to escape from. You could still smell the distinctive scent of your brother’s gloves. The thrill that came with each victory. The pain that filled your being after leaving your past life behind without looking back. What had even happened with your family and friends? Were they alive? Were they safe?
“I'd call this more than just “being observant”,” Wooyoung joined the conversation, pulling you out of your thoughts. He put his arm around your shoulders, squeezing them tightly and you whined. “We hit the jackpot, San.”
“What do you mean?”
“We have an offer for you, Y/N.”
Tumblr media
The next few months after the official match between San and Jay passed in a daze for you. Someone had to pinch you. Hard.
Wooyoung, you’d realised, was a gambling addict. There wasn't any other logical explanation behind his behaviour. Whatever you did or said, he turned into a bet out of which only one of you could emerge as a winner.
So just like that, after that practice match, he and San had made a proposal that was too difficult to decline and simple enough to follow. If San won, you'd coach him for his next matches and join their small group of outlaws. As they told you - they needed someone competent on their side. If Jay won, you'd go on your way and forget about it. Not that this was possible.
You would've lied if you’d said you had been surprised when San delivered the final victorious blow that night. Secretly, you had hoped for this turn of events not much to your friend’s liking. While you were patching up his wounded and bleeding face, whispering comforting words, your betraying heart was accelerating with your mind plagued by thoughts of San.
Today was no different. As you watched San practice his kicks on a punching bag in the fight club, you caught yourself blushing at one of his particularly precise deliveries. Boxing is my thing, I guess, you thought when he halted his movements to drink some water and pulled his tank top over his head, showing off his toned body.
Moments like this were routine for you at this point - just both of you sitting in silence, only his heavy breathing audible - him practicing and you observing. San’s progress was outstanding and this left you jobless - he didn’t need your directions anymore that much. You didn't feel the need to fill the space with small talk or pointless conversations when you were with him and thought of him as someone who had always been part of your life.
Intimidating at first glance, San was, in reality, the kindest person you had ever met. He cared deeply about the people he loved, always making sure to put them first above everything else. He was also thoughtful and considerate - attentive to everyone’s needs and was always there when you needed him the most. San brought you comfort unlike anyone else and you told him things you hadn't even dared before. Your relationship was progressing fast - with a lot of skipped steps, blurring the line between friends and lovers but you didn't mind. Labels weren't needed for you to feel what you did towards him. Not when you had so few opportunities to be together.
You two often daydreamed about this new world he and his friends liked talking about. He wanted to stop fighting - hurting people was what he hated doing the most but their group needed the money desperately. There was no other choice for him but to sacrifice himself every day. San, instead, wanted to build a home for his loved ones and create a safe space for them where they could be together and where he could protect them.
“You can't protect everyone, San”, you had told him the day he shared his plans with you while both of you were sitting on the cold floor of the locker room, shoulder to shoulder. His proximity had your head spinning and you found it hard to focus on his words. San held your hands, tracing circles mindlessly on them, before bringing them to his lips.
“I have to do what I can, though. I can't just give up on any of you,” he had answered, whispering into your skin, goosebumps forming all over your body. Before that, you hadn't considered yourself that important to him and his words made your heart skip a few beats.
“I know what it feels like…,” The lump in your throat and the painful memories of your family had tears forming in your eyes that you tried blinking away. No point in crying when you didn't have the power to change the past. San brought his big hands to your face, cupping your cheeks, forcing you to look at him, and you tried pulling away. The pity and guilt in his eyes were something you wanted to erase forever.
“You can't just run away from your demons, Y/N. Sometimes you have to face them.”
So you had wept in his arms, telling him your life's story for the first time and he had brushed every fear, doubt, and pain away with his soft touches and gentle gaze.
You had grown up in the Outlaw City’s outskirts, in a restricted area where the Guardians’ influence and presence weren't as noticeable. The people were happy - you remembered seeing children playing freely, people reading and drawing and creating with all their might without being disturbed.
Your parents were ordinary people, working ordinary jobs and living an ordinary life. You and your older brother, however, were nothing like them. The fighting rebellious spirit was something you had no idea who passed down to both of you but you were grateful to whoever ancestor was responsible for it.
You two always found ways to get into trouble - from stealing a guitar from one of the contraband gangs in the city to compose silly songs to your brother learning how to box only to enter underground tournaments to earn some extra income for your family. He had learned from the older kids a trick or two and you had made it your life's purpose to follow him around until he taught you too.
You missed those days dearly. The mornings when you would spar together under the blazing sun for hours. The nights when you would go to the restricted area of the city to fight and then run back home with the money you'd made before someone else took it from you. Every day was a game of survival, but you were happy. You had your brother - your only pillar in this dark world.
Until one day everything changed.
That day, the Guardians had come in groups to your city, taking every child or adult in their way, destroying every last piece of safety. You remembered your last moments with your family before they took them away. Your brother screaming at you to run, your father fighting the white-dressed Guardian, and your mother crying in fear. You had tried saving them but to no avail. At least, you didn't know if they had survived and there was no one you could ask. Five years had passed since.
You found your new home in Outlaw City where everyone was a runaway like you and where no one would ask where you'd come from. Your only resolve was to pray that your family was safe and sound and that one day you would find them. This time you were more prepared than ever, you were ready to protect them at the price of anything. So as San wiped away your tears with his thumbs, you felt the heavy burden of your past lift itself from your shoulders.
“I hate myself for leaving them every day, San,” you confess with a shaky voice, trying to calm yourself down.
“The only thing you could do is survive, angel,” he whispered, putting his hands on your shoulders, and squeezing them. Looking at his bruised face, you reminded yourself that everyone here carried their own scars - both visible and invisible, and your heart hurt even more. “It was the same for me. I had to leave my family behind when I came here so I found a new one. Not that it’ll ever stop hurting any less. All eight of us are the same at heart. We all want the same thing.”
A new world to come, you thought and smiled, thinking of Mingi’s passionate speech from the last time you saw him at the bar. He had told you all about their plans and wanted you to be part of them. To join their found family.
Now, returning to reality, you regarded San curiously and a little afraid as he came to stand in front of your chair, leaning down to place a kiss on top of your head. Blushing at the affection in his eyes, you cleared your throat, searching for the right words. A week had passed since this moment and none of you had said anything about it so you couldn't help but feel flustered at his every word and action towards you.
“How was I today, coach?” San chuckled, gently tracing the sides of your face with his fingertips, rough from the endless fighting.
“Could be better,” you gave him your usual response, San grinning and showing his dimples.
“I have to work harder. But maybe if you stared less...”
“And maybe if you paid less attention to me...”
“That's impossible,” San concluded, crouching down, placing his palms on top of your thighs, and you ran your hands through his messy dark locks. With glinting eyes, he excitedly added, “After tonight’s match some of the boys and I will have a meeting. They want you to come.”
“They?”
“I,” the seriousness in his voice made you let out a laugh and your stomach tightened with anticipation. You had only met Mingi and Wooyoung before with the rest of the boys surrounded by a mist of mystery, with only having heard stories about them. The fact that San was letting you get closer to the people he cherished the most didn't help your fluttering heart either.
“Can't wait.”
Tumblr media
San had dragged you out of the fight club and drove you to your apartment to freshen up before meeting the boys with his old van that, who knew how, still functioned. As he had told you while focused on the bumpy road ahead, the vehicle had turned into, both a prison and a temporary home for him and Wooyoung while they were on the run from the Guardians. Guilt washed over you when San described all of their sleepless nights, fighting the demons following them right behind even in their dreams while you were hiding between the four walls of the safety of your home. Mingi’s wanted posters, his constant cautiousness, and the silver pistol always attached to his hip made so much more sense now.
Unfortunately, the Guardians had taken notice of them way too early into their secret operations against the government, and now as you were sitting in front of the boys - their features, illuminated by the dim lighting of the storage house you were in, your heart filled with hurt. In the few hours, you got to know Yeosang and Seonghwa, speeding through the highways every night in search of valuable intel and doing all they could to survive another day, your admiration grew with every next moment spent with them.
Sitting on one of your favourite fluffy blankets on the floor in a circle, eating an improvised dinner consisting of cold chicken nuggets provided by Yeosang, you felt more at home than ever. Mingi and Wooyoung’s silly bickering and friendly teasing, Seonghwa’s warm welcome, Yeosang’s kind smile, and San’s calming presence next to you, filled you with joy, and for the first time in a while, you forgot about the outside world.
“It’s a pity the others couldn’t come today,” said Seonghwa with a sigh as he passed on to you the chocolate bar all of you were sharing. You hadn’t seen one in ages, nor tasted it. Yeosang had just shrugged indifferently earlier at your genuine surprise, telling you he could get one inside the city for you anytime you craved it.
So now playing with the piece in your mouth, letting the sweetness tickle your taste buds, you hummed in agreement. The rest of the group had to stay undercover for a little longer before joining you. “They would’ve loved to meet you, Y/N.”
“They will,” San joined, squeezing your hand and rubbing his thumb over it. Turning your head to look at him, you were met with his dark eyes, shimmering with a glow as if hundreds of stars were in them. You slowly found yourself being pulled by the gravity of his gaze, unable to look away.
“Now, can you two not do this,” whined Wooyoung, earning a playful slap on his thigh from Seonghwa, followed by Mingi and Yeosang’s laughs. “I have to put up with you every day at the club. I’m going to start vomiting rainbows soon.”
“Get a life, Woo,” said Mingi, winking at you. Usually, you could fight back and tease Wooyoung but tonight, embarrassment washed over you after his words. “Leave the lovebirds alone.”
Just then, still holding your hand firmly, San pulled you up gently so now both of you were standing. “Then let’s get out of here.”
Tumblr media
The distant hooting of owls, coming deep from the woods, the light chilly late-night breeze, carrying the smell of pines, and San’s warm touch against your skin engulfed your senses, making your head spin. With your eyes closed, all you could do was trust the man as he guided you through the darkness around you.
“Can I open my eyes,” you asked once again with your previous attempts to get a positive answer out of him being unsuccessful. His deep chuckle vibrated through your body, his hand letting go of yours. Longing for his touch again, you reached forward for him but only brushed through the air.
“I’ve got you, angel,” San’s raspy voice now came from behind you and you felt him put his hands on your shoulders. “You can open them now.”
The view before your eyes made you tear up and a lump formed in your throat, every word you wanted to utter getting caught up in it. The little fireflies, swinging around in a slow dance around you, their comforting glow, reminding you of those you used to catch in the hot summer nights in front of your childhood house with your brother, the vast field you were standing in the middle of, and the tickling in your legs from the overgrown grass were all images and sensations you thought you’d never see or feel again for the rest of your life.
“How did you find this place,” you whispered, too afraid someone would take this moment away from you.
“It’s my special place. I think the Guardians have forgotten about it,” said softly San, moving to stand in front of you with a warm smile on his face. “Now I can finally share it with someone else.”
“Do you come here often?”
“Yes, whenever I need to clear my head,” he trailed off, laughing. “And some time away from Wooyoung. The van can be suffocating as much as I enjoy living with him.”
You wondered if this beautiful place was next on the Guardian’s list for destruction. If you’d be able to come back ever again. If it too would disappear with every trace you’d left.
“You’re frowning again,” San’s voice pulled you out of your trance, making you focus on him instead. His face was almost indiscernible in the night, but his eyes and the silver chain, shining around his neck, were illuminated by the moonlight. “You do this often.”
“I guess I’m not used to things like this.” Genuine in a world full of lies. “I feel like you’ll disappear.”
Taking a step closer to you, San put a finger under your chin, your eyes finding his once again. The electrifying feeling of his touch made you dizzy. Now, you could hear his steady heartbeat, with yours drumming in your ears. “I’ll never leave you, angel.”
The moment his lips found yours, enveloping them in a soft kiss, you lost all of your senses and surrendered yourself to him. At first, his touch was gentle as if San was afraid he would hurt you, but once your hands found his neck, your fingers toying with his hair, he got more desperate for you. His own trailed slowly down the sides of your body, wrapping them around your waist and pulling you closer to him. Already out of breath, you felt a fire ignite in your soul that only San could put out.
He left your lips only to place a few shy kisses down your neck, your heart picking up its rate, slamming against your ribcage. Leaving you gasping and wanting more, San pulled away seconds later, the love and adoration you saw in his eyes making you lose your bearings completely. Cupping your cheeks and bringing his face closer, he rubbed your nose gently with his before placing a kiss on your forehead.
“The final round is coming soon, Y/N,” he murmured when you closed the distance between you, hugging him around his waist and burrowing your face at the crook of his neck. You took in his scent - woody and musky, hypnotizing you. “We’ll see the new world together.”
Even if that was just an empty promise and even if this new world never came to life, you didn’t care.
All you needed was San there with you - everything else was bearable.

“Arriba, abajo, al centro, pa ‘dentro!”
You chant with your friends before downing yet another shot of fireball. It burns going down and makes your eyes water, but the warmth that spreads through your body afterwards is welcoming considering how cold it is outside.
“Going out for a cig, I’ll be back,” you announce to your friends. You fish for your box of One Slims in your coat pocket and pull one out. The cigarette hangs between your teeth and rests against your bottom lip as you search for your lighter. You take a long drag and watch your surroundings as you lean against the building.
Smoking was a habit you got sucked back into recently. You’d been clean for nearly two years, but your breakup with Yunho was what brought it back.
You shake that thought off. No need to think about your ex-boyfriend tonight, you’re here to have a good time. It’s amazing to you how Hongdae manages to stay so packed even in the middle of January, you think to yourself. You turn to watch the other clubs and bars fill with people, and…
No, it’s not… it can’t be.
There’s no mistaking it. That’s him, that’s Yunho.
He’s standing outside the bar, holding hands with a woman you’ve never seen before. Their fingers are interlocked and Yunho’s doing that thing he used to do with you where he strokes your hand with his thumb. He’s all smiles as he looks at her with stars in his eyes.
In that moment, the cold air around you feels suffocating, your lungs feel like they’re made of lead. You can’t will yourself to move, to turn away and walk in the opposite direction. It’s as if your feet have been suctioned to the sidewalk. All you can do is stand and watch in abject horror. Your cigarette falls from between your trembling fingers and onto the pavement.
Hearing Wooyoung call your name snaps you out of it, and by the time you’re back to the present moment, Yunho is out of your line of sight.
“Hey, we were lookin’ for you,” Wooyoung says as he emerges from the crowded bar with San at his side.
You almost can’t believe what you just saw. It all feels like something out of a terrible dream.
“Oh,” you say flatly. You can’t hide that the air had been knocked out of you. Your eyes are already beginning to sting.
“I should start heading home, it’s late.” You can already feel your throat tightening.
“Now? Are you sure?” San asks. “Come on, things are just getting started.”
“Yeah, I’m- I’m really tired. Sorry. Have a good time without me, okay?”
San and Wooyoung call after you, but you turn away and walk toward the train station as quickly as your legs will allow you. You don’t want to turn back. You can’t.
You cringe internally at the way your voice shook just now. You hold down the power button on your phone and catch the next train back to your neighborhood. You can’t stop replaying that moment in your head. Yunho looked so happy, much happier than he was when he met with you at the park to break things off. Your stomach twists at the memory, he tried so hard to put on a happy front, delivering such devastating news with a smile.
Tears start streaming down your face and you can’t stop them. You’re so angry at him, at yourself. Of course he’s moved on by now. He’s Yunho, after all. Sweet, handsome, kindhearted Yunho. It was only a matter of time before someone saw all the radiant beauty in him, but did it have to be so soon? It’s only been two months since you broke up— was he that excited to get rid of you?
He stuck with you through every depressive episode, every moment you wanted to give up on everything. Everyone has a breaking point, did he reach his?
Were you a burden to him this entire time?
You’d only been together for a year and a half, but that time meant the world to you. He was everything you ever wanted, it felt like a dream to be with him. It was only a matter of time before you woke up from it.
You wake up with a pounding headache the next morning. You figure now is the perfect time to turn your phone back on. Part of you hopes to get a call or a text from Yunho acknowledging what happened last night. Maybe he spotted you and thought about you, too.
Instead you’re faced with a hoard of missed calls from Wooyoung and concerned text messages from the rest of your friend group. You figure you owe it to your friends to let them know you’re okay. You hit send on your message to the groupchat and promptly decide to call Wooyoung back.
He picks up within two rings.
“Morning,” he greets, sounding a bit groggy. “Did you get back home safe?”
“Yeah, thanks. Sorry for running off last night, I was just—”
“—No, it’s fine. You weren’t ready, I shouldn’t have pushed it. Are you okay?”
You sigh, preparing yourself to lie. “Yeah, I’m alright.”
“You sure? You don’t sound alright.”
You bite the inside of your bottom lip to stop the tears from escaping your eyes, but to no avail. You break down into sobs, your entire body shaking.
“Last night, I saw him… I saw Yunho. He was with someone new.”
Wooyoung gasps. “Shit, Y/N, I’m so sorry…”
“He looked so happy,” you sob. “He’s so happy with her and I made him so fucking miserable when we were together.”
“That’s not true. Yunho had nothing but good things to say about you the whole time you were together. Hell, even before he asked you out, he wouldn’t shut up about you. He loved you, Y/N.”
“Then why? Why did things have to end the way they did? Why did he move on so quickly?”
“I dunno, I wish I knew why,” Wooyoung says. “But he lost out on someone amazing. It’s his loss.”
“God, I should’ve known he was with someone new, he’s been so quiet in the groupchat lately. I just thought, y’know, since it’s taking me this long to get over him…” Your words trailed off with a sniffle. “I want him to miss me. Am I asking for too much? I just want him to miss me.”
You’ve missed Yunho every day since he said goodbye on that park bench.
“Listen to me, Y/N. Love found you when you and Yunho got together and it’ll find you again. I promise it will.”
“Okay,” you say, but you don’t believe him. You know he means well, he always does, but you don’t want love to find you again. You don’t have the energy in you to have another talking stage, to be vulnerable with another person, to have someone new see you at your worst.
You don’t want another do-over with someone new.
You just want your Yuyu back.

Title: Love in the Shadows
Paring: Ashitaka x Reader (Princess Mononoke)
Word Count: 1.5k.
TW: gn!reader, one-sided love, slight angst, fluff at the end

Tumblr media
The journey to the West had taken you farther than you had ever imagined. The forests, the spirits, the strange creatures—all of it seemed like a dream. But the reality was that you had chosen to follow Ashitaka, the brave prince from the Emishi tribe, on his quest to lift the curse that threatened his life. What you hadn't anticipated was the growing connection between him and San, the wolf girl.
The first time you saw them together, there was an undeniable spark. San, fierce and wild, yet gentle in her own way, seemed to understand Ashitaka in ways you couldn't. You had hoped to be his companion, his confidante, but watching them, you realized there was something deeper between them.
As days turned into weeks, you found yourself stepping back, giving them space. You pretended not to notice the way Ashitaka's eyes lit up when he talked about San, or the softness in his voice when he called her name. Your heart ached, but you hid it behind a smile, always supportive, always there for him.
One evening, as the sun set over the lush forest, you sat by a stream, lost in thought. Ashitaka had gone to meet San again, and you felt the familiar pang of loneliness. You had tried to keep your distance, to create opportunities for them to be alone. It was painful, but you believed it was for the best.
"This will be good for him," you thought to yourself, "he won't need me anymore." Placing your feet into the stream, you watch the golden rays of the sun turn the sky pink and gold over the forest as the water runs through your toes. Kodamas circle you as if keeping you company for your ever-growing loneliness.
Ashitaka, however, noticed your absence. At first, he didn't understand why you were always busy, always finding excuses not to spend time with him. Every time he would try to meet with you, you just brushed him off or hurried away to help the ladies of Iron Town. He saw you being pulled in different directions of the town, seeing you interact with the townspeople, smiling and laughing without him at your side.
He missed your presence, your laughter, the way you always seemed to know what he needed. It bothered him, more than he wanted to admit.
One night, after another meeting with San, he found you sitting alone, curled up by the fire. Your eyes drooped lazily, in a sleep haze, just looking at the flames. The light flickered on your face, casting shadows that mirrored the turmoil in your heart. He approached you, concern evident in his eyes.
"Why have you been avoiding me?" he asked softly.
You looked up, startled, and forced a smile. "I haven't been avoiding you, Ashitaka. I've just been busy."
He frowned, not convinced. "Busy with what? We're on this journey together. We've always faced everything together."
You sighed, knowing you couldn't keep lying to him. "Not anymore, my prince. We are no longer a pair. Ashitaka, you have San now. She needs you, and you need her. I don't want to get in the way."
His frown deepened, and he sat down beside you. "You're not in the way. You're my friend. I care about you."
Those words, meant to comfort, only made your heart ache more. You looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "I just think it's better this way."
He was silent for a long moment, and you could feel the weight of his stare. "Is that really what you want?"
No, it wasn't what you wanted. What you wanted was to be by his side, to share his burdens and his joys. But you couldn't say that. Instead, you nodded. "Yes. It's for the best."
Ashitaka didn't respond immediately. He seemed lost in thought, struggling with something within himself. Finally, he reached out, taking your hand in his. "I don't want to lose you. I can't lose you."
Your breath caught, and for a moment, you dared to hope. But you knew it was impossible. San had his heart, and you couldn't compete with that. "You won't lose me," you said, gently pulling your hand away. "I'll always be here for you, Ashitaka. Just… not in the same way."
Days passed, and despite your efforts to distance yourself, Ashitaka kept trying to reconnect. He sought you out, insisting on spending time together, even if it was just in silence. It was confusing, painful, and a constant reminder of what you couldn't have.
One evening, you were walking together through the forest in awkward silence. No conversations to fill up the space, just you and him walking along the trail. Feeling uncomfortable, you keep your eyes forward and look at the scenery.
Kodamas follow you two, smiley and jumping around your feet. Making sure to keep a good distance between you and him, you start to smile and play with the kodamas.
Realizing the physical space between the two of you, Ashitaka attempts to get closer to you. He took some larger steps and is now less than half an arm's length away from you. He observes your expressions of glee, interacting with the kodamas, and his heart pangs.
Why haven't you looked at him like that in so long? What has caused this change in your relationship with one another?
As he reaches out to grab your attention, you trip over a root and fly into the ground. Ashitaka quickly tries to hold you but ultimately fails. Instead, he opts to shield you from hitting the dirt, sending both of you tumbling down the small hill.
After some rolls, you guys eventually stop. Ashitaka, now leaning over you with his arms by your head, looks down at you wide-eyed. Both of you breathing hard, just bask in the after-effects of the fall. Realizing how precarious the position looks, you attempt to push him off and get up. He does not budge. You look up at him questionably.
Looking down at you and realizing he's got you trapped between his arms, he blurts the words that had been haunting him, "I've been thinking a lot about us. About you. You've always been there for me, even when I didn't realize it. And now, I don't want to lose that."
You stopped, your heart pounding. "Ashitaka…"
He shakes his head, "why have you been avoiding me? Do you no longer like me?"
"No!" you shout, "of course not. I've just been busy…"
He looks at you, unimpressed with your excuse.
You look to the side, unable to hold his gaze, "I've been putting distance between us so that you can hang out with San more."
"San?" He questions. "Why?"
"Well, I've seen how you look and talk about her. It's one of love and I'm not going to be the wall between you guys."
"Why? San is my friend and you are too."
You just continue looking away, tears starting to pool in your eyes. "Yes, you are my friend too."
Taken back by your glassy eyes, he backs up in surprise, allowing you to push him off and make your way back to the town.
"Wait!" he shouts, trailing after you, attempting to get your attention.
You continue walking away, arms wrapped around your body, ignoring him.
Catching up to you in quick strides, he wraps his arms around you. "You are special to me," he whispers. "You are the only one to stay by my side and hold strong to us. Please, don't leave me behind."
Tears now falling, "Ashitaka," you say shakily, "I love you."
His eyes widen but his hold tightens around you.
"I've put space between us because I know you love San and I want what's best for you."
Turning you around, he clasps the side of your arms. "San is only my friend. You are who I love!" he declares, face to face.
You stared at Ashitaka, his words echoing in your mind. He loved you. The truth of it struck you with an overwhelming mix of relief, joy, and disbelief. You had spent so long hiding your feelings, convinced that his heart belonged to San.
"Ashitaka, I..." you began, your voice trembling. "I thought you loved San. I saw the way you looked at her."
Ashitaka's grip on your arms tightened slightly, his eyes earnest and filled with emotion. "San is a dear friend, but my heart has always been with you. I just didn't realize it until you started pulling away. It made me see how much you mean to me, how much I need you."
Tears streamed down your face as you looked up at him, your heart swelling with hope.
A soft smile spread across Ashitaka's face, and he gently wiped away your tears. "Then let's not waste any more time," he said. "Let's face whatever comes together, as we always have."
He pulled you into a tender embrace, holding you close as if afraid to let go. You wrapped your arms around him, feeling the warmth of his body against yours, the steady beat of his heart. In that moment, all the pain and uncertainty melted away, replaced by the profound joy of being with the one you loved.
Ashitaka leaned in, his lips brushing against yours in a gentle, loving kiss. It was a promise, a testament to the journey you had shared and the future you would build together.
