Forum: Wisconsin Film Festival   Format: Various formats

Observations: We haven't been to Madison, WI to see a film since 2018. We booked three films at the festival taking us from 11am-6pm. MAN'S CASTLE (screened in 4K) appeared in a newly restored version that added several minutes of previously lost dialog. (It was preceded by several lovely Fox Movietone outtakes of footage taken in Wisconsin in the 1920s and 30s, with David Drazin accompanying on piano.) THE DISORDERLY ORDERLY - the final collaboration of Frank Tashlin and star Jerry Lewis - was shown in a privately-owned 35mm IB Technicolor print, a seldom-projected preview print slightly different from the release version. In between, we saw a collection of shorts related to botanical themes, the centerpiece of which was a feature-length documentary about the relationship of humans with houseplants (LIGHT NEEDS). Only the Tashlin film seemed slightly underattended; sixty years later, many folks still do not get Lewis.

After a long flight, they got up to leave the plane. Drazin was hauling a carry-on suitcase, multiple diaper bags, and her baby in a car seat. Her 2-year-old and 4-year-old followed behind her. They deplaned and stopped to wait for their stroller.

Fun Books to Read During Hanukkah

Hanukkah starts December 18 this year, and while it may be one of the better known Jewish holidays, it’s actually one of the more minor ones in Judaism. Each night we light one candle of the menorah until all of the candles are lit, banishing darkness with light. We play dreidel, exchange gifts, and sing songs.

The current concept of “sin” is a stain upon the soul that requires a kind of supernatural atonement or cleansing process. In the Hebrew Bible, wrong behavior is seen in a rational, natural way. Scripture speaks of three categories of wrongs that are not synonyms. There is chet, the misstep, literally meaning “missing the mark,” as if one were shooting an arrow and hitting the outer rims of the target and missing the shooter’s goal, its center. The Bible mentions it 34 times. The second pesha, occurring 93 times, is a conscious rebellious act such as taking revenge, stealing, murder. The third avon, cited in 233 instances, is an error, an unintentional act that nevertheless has harmful consequences. Understood in this natural way, it should be clear that the misdeed is something that shouldn’t provoke passive feelings of guilt and prayerful recitations, needing clergy or a psychiatrist to erase it. Individuals should recognize what they did wrong, think why they did the wrong, take actions that remedy the consequences, and assure that there will be no repetition.

Seeds of Fulfillment - Live from Studio 1 - another previously-unreleased gem from Tramp Records

*** UNRELEASED FUSION JAZZ-FUNK FROM 1982 *** Columbus, Ohio was a test market for cable and public access cable television in 1980. One time our band was playing an outdoor concert in a downtown park and I saw television cameras pointed in our direction. I couldn't resist talking to the people handling the cameras and was introduced to the man in charge of All-American Cablevision, Craig Schneider. He invited the band to do a concert in their TV studio. By the time that actually happened, Randy Mather had gone on the road with Woody Herman. I'm pretty sure he recommended Paul Maslin to take his place. Paul learned our whole book in two weeks. I thought that was incredible! When we got to the studio the day of the taping, one of the band members told me Jeanette Williams wouldn't be with us on the show. She already had an obligation for that day. We played the entire show live with no stopping and no retakes. For public access shows they didn't want to have to stop and start taping if they could avoid it. They kept the master tapes for only two or three weeks at most for a quick rerun. Then they would reuse the master tape for another show unless you bought the master. By the time I learned this it was already too late to buy the master they'd made of our outdoor show. As the studio was looking for volunteers I soon found myself behind the camera, then directing shows. I even wrote and directed three episodes of a comedy show I called Looney. Little did I know Seeds of Fulfillment was in its last days. When it ended, Paul said he knew some musicians in the Chicago area, and asked if I would like to go along. I said yes. It was 1982. ‘Voy a llamar a ICE’: incidentes de odio y amenazas contra inmigrantes aumentan en Texas

Según datos del DPS, en el 2017 hubo casi 200 incidentes de odio reportados en el estado. Muchos no denuncian.

“Voy a llamar a ICE”. La frase se ha convertido en la amenaza más frecuente con la que personas anglosajonas intimidan a hispanos no solo en Dallas sino en todo el país, por lo que ellos presumen es la respuesta natural a su supuesta presencia ilegal. Videos que se han hecho virales muestran a ciudadanos incómodos porque alguien habla español en las calles de sus barrios, en supermercados, en tiendas o en espacios públicos.

“Es muy triste porque uno sale de su casa, a trabajar, a tratar de buscar la vida sin imaginar que hay alguien ahí que te lastima porque eres hispano o latino”. Las palabras de Claudia López resumen lo que los inmigrantes sienten antes estos incidentes de odio que han ido en aumento desde el comienzo de la administración de Donald Trump.

Mientras vendía tacos, López fue amenazada con ser denunciada ante ICE por una mujer quien hizo llamarse ‘Valerie’ y en las redes sociales fue identificada como ‘Taco Truck Tammy’.

“Lastiman a una ´mugrosa´ como yo, a una ‘nadie’”, agregó  López en un video que subió a su canal de YouTube.

De acuerdo a las cifras más recientes recopiladas por el FBI, los delitos motivados por el odio en 2017 (7,175) aumentaron en un 17% en comparación con el 2016 (6,121). En el 58% de los casos el atacante tenía prejuicios contra la raza, el origen étnico o los antepasados de la víctima y en el 22% fue por motivos religiosos.

Víctimas y defensores dicen que los incidentes de odio dirigidos a latinos e inmigrantes van más allá de insultos e intimidación: algunos han sido objeto de asalto, robos e incluso asesinato.

“En Texas hay una gran conciencia del estatus migratorio de las personas, eso hace que algunas personas sean más vulnerables que otras”, dijo en entrevista Cheryl Drazin, directora de la oficina regional del Norte de Texas y Oklahoma de la Liga Anti-difamación (ADL), que registra ataques e incidentes de odio contra personas por causa de su religión, raza, etnia, género, orientación sexual, nacionalidad o discapacidad.

Atacantes blancos

Según datos del Departamento de Seguridad Pública de Texas, (DPS), el número total de incidentes de delitos de odio reportados en el estado en 2017 fue de 190. Esto representa un aumento del 6.7% en comparación con 2016. Estos incidentes involucraron a 229 víctimas, 209 delincuentes, y resultaron en un total de 194 delitos.

El 59% de los casos fueron ataques por motivos raciales y de ellos el 6% contra hispanos. El 48% de los perpetradores fueron blancos y los delitos de odio ocurrieron con mayor frecuencia en viviendas.

“Los delitos de odio pueden afectar tanto a la víctima como a la comunidad que la víctima representa. Hay tantas intersecciones, por lo que alguien puede ser católico y latino y ser atacado por ambas”, agregó Drazin.

“La comunidad hispana se ve afectada de dos maneras: existe la reacción física ante alguien que se ve hispano y luego se asumen suposiciones acerca de ellos (que son ilegales). Lo cierto es que el movimiento anti-inmigrante es un movimiento y sin duda desde la última campaña presidencial es mucho más amplio que antes”.

La ADL ya ha capacitado a 50 consulados mexicanos en el país sobre estos temas, siendo uno de los primeros el de Dallas durante el verano del 2017.

Personal del equipo de derechos civiles de la oficina del Procurador General y de la división de crímenes de odio del FBI, ha impartido talleres para miembros del servicio exterior mexicano sobre cómo filtrar y orientar este tipo de incidentes: desde el procesamiento de una queja si alguien está indocumentado (el estatus migratorio no es un limitante para denunciar), hasta casos de  intimidación física y digital (bullying) y movimientos antiinmigrantes.

El consulado mexicano a su turno comparte esta información en foros específicos como “Conoce tus derechos” .

“Un gran reto de este país y en particular en Texas, son los supremacistas blancos, el racismo y la discriminación”, aseguró a Al Día el cónsul mexicano Francisco de la Torre quien a fines de febrero hizo una denuncia en Twitter sobre amenazas de una persona que presumía ser supremacista blanco y le envió fotografías de gente muerta con cuchillos en respuesta a sus mensajes sobre las contribuciones de los migrantes o de la comunidad hispana.

“Me queda claro que si no existen denuncias, no se dan a conocer las circunstancias, los temas se olvidan. Se tiene que visibilizar el tema con prudencia -porque se asumen riesgos- pero de otra manera, sin visualizarlo, no podemos combatirlo”, agregó.

No es el único funcionario público que ha sido atacado por estos grupos. En mayo del año pasado el legislador Rafael Anchía compartió en Twitter una grabación en la que un anónimo le decía “Anchía, despreciable escoria liberal antiamericano, pedazo de m….”, por defender a los los jóvenes amparados bajo DACA tras la decisión del procurador del estado Ken Paxton de demandar al gobierno federal para eliminar el programa.

“Me entristece que ni siquiera podamos discutir (de temas migratorios)”, dijo entonces Anchía, presidente de la bancada legislativa Mexicoamericana en Austin. “En lugar de eso, degenera en ese odio tan vil que pueden escuchar en el mensaje”.

Pocas agencias reportan

Aunque las cifras del FBI son las más precisas y recientes, hay muchos crímenes que no llegan a ser denunciados o contabilizados y no toda la responsabilidad de ello recae en el miedo de las víctimas.

“Hay un tremendo problema de información en este país para todos los delitos de odio”, dijo Drazin de ADL. “En Texas tenemos alrededor de 1,000 agencias que deben reportar sobre estos delitos, pero sólo alrededor del 6% lo hace. No hay ninguna penalización para ellos por no informar.”

Según un reporte del FBI en 2017 en Texas, solo 75 agencias reportaron 190 crímenes de odio a pesar de que son 1,009 las que recolectan esta información. Dallas reportó 14 crímenes de odio, 12 de ellos por motivos de orientación sexual y solo 2 motivados por raza.

Esto es un aumento del 27% con respecto a 2016 y es superior a otras ciudades grandes del país como Chicago, Los Ángeles y San Diego. Pero, dicen los expertos, las cifras no reflejan lo que pasa en las calles o incluso en otros espacios de la vida pública.

En julio del año pasado Dallas Skydive Lodge publicó unas reglas en su sitio web condenadas en redes sociales como racistas. “Si usted está en este país ilegalmente, vaya a su casa y haga paracaidismo en su propio país. No queremos ningún dinero que haya obtenido ilegalmente en Estados Unidos “.

En mayo una mujer en el parque acuático Six Flags de San Antonio llamó a los miembros de una familia “espaldas mojadas” (wetback en inglés), una manera despectiva de dirigirse a quienes cruzan la frontera ilegalmente a través del Río Bravo. ¿La razón? El altercado se desencadenó cuando el niño de la familia blanca se sentó en una mesa reservada por la familia latina y al pedirle a la madre que cambiara de sitio, ésta enfureció.

Actos solidarios

Aún así también han habido actos de respuesta solidarios. Emulando al episodio en el que una banda de mariachis acompañada de miles de personas protestó frente a la casa del abogado neoyorquino Aaron Schlossberg, captado en un video lanzando insultos racistas contra trabajadores de restaurantes de habla hispana, los vecinos de ‘Taco Truck Tammy’ se reunieron este domingo en una preparatoria en Lakewood.

Convocados por LULAC, frente a un camión de tacos y con música de mariachi de fondo, los vecinos dijeron estar avergonzados por las acciones de la mujer e hicieron énfasis en que esos actos no representan a toda la comunidad que sí le da la bienvenida a inmigrantes.  

“Estados Unidos es un gran país forjado y creado en valores”, reflexionó el cónsul de la Torre sobre estos incidentes. “Estos valores no son compatibles con la discriminación, con el odio y con el racismo. Lo único que se tiene que separar por colores en la vida, es la ropa para lavarla”, concluyó.

A variety of opinions exist in Jewish thought on the question of a Jew’s obligation to accept a rabbinical decision if he or she knows it to be wrong. Generally speaking, three broad approaches can be seen in rabbinical writings.

Some scholars insist that one must accept what a rabbi says on any subject at all times. For some, this rule ensures that only a “single Torah” will exist in Judaism; for others, this is due to a belief that rabbis are infallible and do not err, as God guarantees that their words are true.

A second approach includes a spectrum of ideas in between the two extremes, requiring obedience only under certain circumstances. Proponents of this approach say that when people are uncertain they should obey the rabbi; however, if people are certain that a rabbi is mistaken, in a case so extreme that he seems to be saying that black is white or left is right, they should ignore the rabbinical pronouncement.
