Grave Moss

The trip back to camp was a steady process of traveling through most of Elwynn Forest, up towards the northern mountains where the lake sat, and then up through a hidden path made mostly of mountain goat trails. It had taken most of the night after leaving Stormwind, but the night time walk was comforting and sleep rarely came to him until the mornings normally.

When he did finally arrive, he made a quick check of their small belongings. Their bedrolls were still set in place, the fire coals untouched, their extra backpacks settled in the spots he had last seen them in. Everything was as it had been since his last visit a day and a half ago.

Norli's concern about a ghost haunting the area, or perhaps her specifically, unnerved him. From time to time, a ghost would appear before him but it was mostly due to those consumed by the void and had not yet returned to the spirit realm. From the sounds of it, Norli's case was no different, and he cursed himself for being in such a rush. Where else would a spirit go once called back to the physical world? He scolded himself. Back then, he didn't even think about it. He assumed her persistence in a ritual to put the spirit to rest was a symbolic gesture more than preventing personal hauntings as the spirit had no way to return without her help. He figured the ghost would eventually return on its own.

As he thought, he had gathered his mortar from his extra bag and had begun to mill the herbs he needed to make the correct paint for his spell. A few grounded black ferns were mixed in with a few blue glowing flower petals. The blue at first swirled with the black's fern's goo, after a few more harsh grinds and stirs the blue petals were absorbed.

Hours passed. By the time he had enough paint, the sun's light was warming the sky but not high enough to be seen or chase away the shadows of their mountain camp, nor would it until it was mid-day or later.

Synric dabbed two fingers in the black paint. The bits of water he put into the mixture in order to loosen the goo had made the paint feel like wet sand with the consistency of gel instead of tar. He made his way first to their entrance of their camp and began drawing. The runic symbol was a complicated array of lines and half circles all attached in a single stroke. As he wrote, his magic flickered and combined with the paint absorbing it much like lichen does with water. When he was done, the pathway had a single array of black lines and nothing else. To a normal individual, it looked like a child's drawing. There was an X, P, an arrow, and some strange curved lines all attached to one another that appeared nothing like a drawing of any sort. Synric studied it for a moment. The lines were perfect, the edges straight, the curves could have used a little more work. All in all, it was passable.

He moved counterclockwise too about three o'clock, dipped his two fingers into the mixture once more, and began to draw the same symbol on the face of the mountain. He also drew the same symbols at the noon section, and then nine o'clock. As the last line was drawn, a spark of blue flared to life in the runes, in all four of them. Synric stepped back, letting his black soaked fingers lay at his side, and watched as each rune sparked a blue of light all around. The spell was being to form its barrier. His nod was solemn, then he picked up his extra belongings and stepped over the rune. As soon as he did, a bright flare of blue light dazzled and hiss, then went quiet.

No shadow dwellers could enter now.

His fingers and wrist ached after the exercise. Rest begged at his joints and his mind, but his eyes were less willing to close than the rest of his body. Sleep was on its way, but it would be some time before he fell blissful into it. So, he moved his items into a little shadowy pocket of the mountains crevices and headed down into the forest. The first large tree he saw was only a few feet away from the base and he climbed up to its mid-section, situated himself comfortable, and closed his eyes.

The wind blew gently around him, rustling the leaves, and swaying the grass. The sun speckled downwards in little pockets of heat. The birds chirped from great distances away, and the bugs were eerily quiet around him. Synric felt his legs give into sleep first, then his shoulders, and at last his arms and fingers tingled with the sensation of exhaustion. It took some time before his eyes rolled back and his breathing slowed, and it was at that moment sleep took him in its dark embrace.

He awoke to the same stillness he had fallen into. The heat of the day had moved across his body, allowing a cool ache to form in his bones and muscles. He moved slowly allowing his legs and arms to wake up first before sitting straighter. He watched the gentle passage of the wind for several long minutes more, then stretched his arms and legs and began his way down the tree.

A click escaped his tongue. The wind swayed gently against him, but nothing else occurred. He paused for a moment as he stretched his shoulders up as high as he could wondering why his friend had yet to appear. "Kal-" he stopped remembering his friend was not with him. How strange not having Kal'sin, he thought as he made sure his bow was still attached, his sword was placed comfortably back at his side, his dagger still hidden along his back, and the blade tucked into his boot. I hope Norli didn't get any strange ideas with a dragon pet as a friend.

As he traveled back through the forest, he couldn't help but think through the possible things Norli could do with a dragon pet. She was generous, kind, and loving, sure, but there was a mischievous side that was mostly innocent, or at least she acted innocent. He hadn't determined if her ideas were because she knew she could get away with it or not. And Kal’sin was equally mischievous, but he knew he could get away with it. He was cute as a little hatchling dragon, people may get mad if he stole an apple or some meat, but in the end, he was faster and his friends would end up paying for him or defending him. Norli was much the same sometimes.

He couldn’t help but remember the incident with the boat cabin. Norli had barged into his room when he was half naked and started going off about something acting as if she had done nothing wrong. He tried to get her slow down, and at the same time to get her out, but a knock came to the door and before he could stop the following events a cabin boy opened the door and froze staring at them both. Synric felt the rush of heat return to his face. He was immediately thankful that she wasn't around. Despite her absent-mindless at times, Norli seemed to figure out his thoughts through the simple, brief motions of his body before he could gather them in control. She was a strange companion indeed.

He shivered at the thought of leaving Kal'sin with her now.

He shook the rest of the thoughts away for some time as he made his way about a mile before reaching the river between the road and the town. As the water rushed, he took a few cupfuls for himself, refilled his drinking cache, and then felt his stomach grumble. He thought about eating. There wasn't much time left in the day, but it had been some time since he last ate, and he still had several miles to go before reaching his next destination. He supposed there was enough time to catch something and eat as he walked.

Synric pulled free one of his arrows from his quiver, a white tipped one, and found a nice little rock and knelt down. Poised with an arrow in one hand, elbow pulled up, shoulder tensed like a spring, he waited. The river flowed over the numerous rocks that laid in the bed. Thousands of small pebbles, and some large enough to knock a man unconscious if need be. Silver-grey specks flashed by in seconds. Just a glimpse of the tail told him that they were fast silver-fish. He waited.

Waited.

And waited.

Another silver-speck slipped by flowing down the current much like the first. Synric didn't budge. He watched as the creature slipped out of view, under the currents. Another one would come.

After a minute of letting two more fish slip by, Synric threw the arrow down into the water. Nothing was where he aimed, only rocks and pebbles, but the arrow slowed as it hit the water's fast current and then began to dance as a tail past the surface and thrashed. The arrow tip began to float away. Synric bounded over the rocks, never once touching the water's edge.

The river brought the arrow and fish half a mile down the current, just before the bridge, where the white tip stuck up against a rock face. As he reached it, the arrow tip was still lodged in the silver-fish side. Not a good way to kill an animal, he pondered solemnly as he bent down and pulled the arrow free of the fish. A slow death.

Two guards saw him in the grand dance of his swift, agile movements across the river rocks and plucking an arrow from the water. Their wide eyes turned quickly to dismissal. Synric had turned his gaze away in order to head back into the forest when he heard the mutter phrase. "I cannot stand elves. They come out nowhere moving like cats!”

What little he could remember of the events months ago was enough to lead him into the area of which he was seeking his destination. He took a deep breath, gazing upwards to the scattered blue sky. Now it was convincing Norli to go inside and raid a grave with him.

After half an hour of sitting under the shadow of the large tree, Synric finally rose and walked back out into the tall grass. He shifted the blades of plants finding the grave moss of where he hoped the bandit had died and picked it. The moss found a comfortable pocket in his knapsack as he started the last two miles back to Stormwind City.

Last year, more than 198,000 people attended the two weekends of Coachella, and the resulting $84 million in ticket sales made it the highest-grossing music festival in the world, according to BoxScore. Stagecoach, a country music fest, is also held at the Empire Polo Club field. There, kids under 10 are free, the night ends "by or before" midnight, and there is a published code of conduct that threatens ejection for "obscene clothing," "irresponsible use of alcohol," and even "offensive gestures, imagery, or symbolism." Stagecoach boasts the "Halfpint Hootenanny," staffed by a chapter of the Girl Scouts council, where kids can enjoy an animal barn, jewelry-making bar, and performances from kid-friendly musicians. (In some cases, those musicians are actual kids, like one of this year's performers, 11-year-old Emi Sunshine.) Interestingly, though, arrests at Stagecoach outnumber those at Coachella. This seems to correspond to its more lenient alcohol policy; at Coachella, alcohol sale and consumption is limited to specific "beer garden" areas, while at Stagecoach, alcohol can be consumed anywhere on the premises by those 21 and up. And at both festivals? Marijuana, medically and legally prescribed or not, is verboten. (Though if you get close to the stages during almost any Coachella show, you will eventually wander into a cloud of weed smoke.) Sgt. The desire to incorporate kids into classically "adult" cultural activities is gaining steam across the country, especially in metropolitan areas among parents with high incomes.
