Flaw's Ears

A flawed guide to dragon ears

A while ago I made myself a little visual reference to help me draw dragons from different tribes with variable ear shapes. You can sort of see this in effect in my JMA project where I drew every student (and teacher) at the academy.

That reference is handy for me, but also not very pretty to look at. So I decided to make a cleaner, more put-together version I can post as a stand-alone thing.

Keep in mind this is not supposed to be a "definitive" guide. It's just how I decided to draw these for myself. I'm not a biologist, half of this probably doesn't even make sense.

Anyway, here it is; how I draw these dragons' ears:

I expect my interpretations for Rain- and Seawings to turn the most heads; the former for combining the cheek frills into their regular ears (they're separate in canon), and the latter for being generally a bit unconventional (prehensile sausage flaps? what?).

Also, if you feel like trying it out for a bit, you are welcome to follow this guide or selectively take pointers from it if you want. You don't need to ask permission.

Intro!!!

My name is Archemides (call me Arch!) and I draw dragons 🐉 (mainly WoF things like my OCs)

I try to post every few days/at least once a week, but sometimes things happen (mainly artblock) which slows me down.

My askbox is open 24/7 so ask me whatever (including requests!) and I'll try to respond! Sometimes requests will be closed tho so ye 🐉

Any and all interaction is appreciated as long as its positive!

Venom, the Sand/RainWing hybrid

Comma, the Hive/SilkWing hybrid

Rudd, the Sea/NightWing hybrid

Alchemist, the AllWing

Venom is 1/4 Rain and 3/4 Sand, and is an assassin. Her birth name is Eucalyptus, but she changed her name after her mother's death. Her father was a soldier on Burn's side

Comma is 50/50, and wants to be a student at JMA. He was hatched just after the events of book 15, his egg hidden away by his parents during Wasp's rule.

Rudd is 50/50, but he has basically no idea since he was abandoned in the egg. He hatched in Mud territory nearing the end of the war and managed to stay safe and hidden on his own. He now sells poisons to dragons like Venom (and "potions of vitality" to the more dense).

PIKE!!! honestly I love this guy, he feels like an actual character until the other students who were mentioned briefly or not even at all. Also since in the gns it shows him getting pushed down by a fallen tree in the attack, he has dendrophobia. Not that he's scared of specifically trees themselves but rather them falling, which is why he doesn't go outside much.

From the tip of her tail to her horns, she almost seemed dazzled in the nightsky with tiny turquoise specks. Her wings were covered in stars. And a large spiral shaped cluster of them formed several curls the shape of the milkyway. As though she held the universe in her arms. If she stood in the dark alone, Carnelian swore that her eyes would glow as though they were two full moons in clear nightsky." -sneak peak of the Maroon fanfic.

I was very experimental with the nightwing scales on this, probably won't continue to draw it that way though.

This gives me an excuse to talk about Carnelian >:)

Very muscular compared to the other skywings, I just still need to practice drawing muscles lol.

Her colors are based off of a Harris hawk. I thought it be funny if the character who wants to be left alone would be based off a very social bird.

Her horns are based off a cow I had before she died (our electric went out during winter and we couldn't keep her warm enough..) and the white is supposed to represent snow on her back and Harris hawk feathers.

She is the slowest of the skywing students, but she's still faster than the other tribes

In my Carnelian au, she is disabled after the fire and has a prosthetic leg, and lost an eye.

Carnelian likes collecting bones btw, if you care.

After scowling so much her eyes are now in a permanent squinting state.
