Draping a dress is like painting a dream with fabric. If Pattern Drafting is the math of fashion, Draping is certainly the art. I love draping a dress - even the tedious marking and transferring necessary after all the fun! While working with Elizabeth C. this summer on her Custom Maternity Wedding Dress #DecoDayDreamDress I got to exercise my artistic muscles as a dress designer. She was so sweet and generous as to present an idea and hand over artistic license: an honor I do not take lightly! Elizabeth has seen my work and has followed Themis and Thread’s design progress over the years. Being able to work with someone I know and adore in my sweet Finger Lakes community is so special! I hadn’t made a formal maternity dress before though. Not being formally trained in maternity ware was a joyful challenge and we agreed texture and layers would be really fun for this special dress. This “draping sketch” was a pretty magical moment in this design, where I really felt connected with the spirit of the project. Creating like this is very much a magical communication between Muse, form and fun.
