Yeah, I also struggle to imagine Severus and Remus becoming friends in canon. Remus is extremely passive aggressive and way too loyal to James, while Severus is very open about his disdain for certain people, including Remus and especially James. If I were Severus I would also find it extremely hard to trust Remus given their history. Remus is also the kind of person who’s willing to do anything to fit in and be liked, while Sev is comfortable with his own company. Both make sense given their circumstances. Contrary to popular belief, Sev did NOT hate Remus because he was a werewolf - he hated him because he was and quite frankly remained one of his bullies. Yet at the same time, I love both characters and I’m fascinated by their dynamic. I do think there is a version of reality where under different circumstances, they could have gotten along. Now, I’m wondering, do you think there’s any version of reality where Severus and Sirius could have been friends?
I have answered this somewhere before - but I am going to quote my friend @dragonlordette on this and explain why they are incompatible:
"Snape is unafraid to be himself to the point of being bullied and disliked his whole life, while Lupin is avoidant. These two characteristics don't lend themselves to complementing each other, they just lead to Snape disrespecting Lupin. As an alternative example of a more "complementary" case of opposites attract, Tonks is sociable while Lupin is avoidant. This means she can help him out his shell, but she is not so committed to "staying true to herself" that she would find lupins tendency not to speak up to his friends weak (like snape would). It's a more complementary strength.
I just feel like nearly every trait of Lupin and snape is mutually exclusive, rather than complementary. "
My own take is that, "Remus enjoys being around people who are aspirational - someone whose life he can live vicariously through (James, teen Sirius, Tonks) or someone he can look up to (Dumbledore). Severus is aspirational in a way that won't speak to Remus."
In canon, from the way I read it, Snape is on backfoot by what he considers is Remus' dishonest civility. He cannot effectively argue with Remus when Remus is polite but inwardly hostile/oppositional - see, here: Verbal Fencing Between Snape and Remus , Neither Likes Nor Dislikes Severus
He tries to avoid Remus the best he can, because one, there is genuine fear there from the teenage brush off of the Whomping Willow incident and he is constantly wary and hypervigilant. My reading of Remus is harsher than a lot of the fandom, but I really don't see a scenario of them getting along. (I'm sure other interpretations may make that feasible, but it's not my vision of who these two characters are)
Also, it's clear to me that Remus, while acknowledging that his friend's behaviour with Snape wasn't great, isn't too fond of him himself. (he will try to lighten how James' behaviour looks - see end of POA, OOTP chapter post SWM). He disapproves of Snape as an authority figure - as demonstrated by the Boggart lesson (Snape's jibe about Neville pissed him off - he raises his eyebrows at him, which in Remus language, is "ticked off"), and the fact that while he agrees with Snape that Harry shouldn't be in Hogsmeade, he will not let Harry be in Snape's power to deal with.
Sirius, on the other hand, as hot take it might be - but as my friend @saintsenara pointed out, Snape enjoys baiting him ("how is the cleaning going?"), engaging with him because Sirius is upfront (the entire kitchen scene). Snape knows how to deal with that kind of language, it's batting in a language he knows, whereas with Remus, he is never sure of what he is getting.
Sirius and Snape are narrative mirrors, explicitly in canon. Sirius and Remus are narrative stand-ins for when James is important for Harry's development, while Snape's story becomes more important when Lily is important to Harry's development:
They have much in common:
- people who lost their best friends and the most damaged by it.
- Sirius punishes himself for James' death by staying in Azkaban for 12 years, Snape atones for his own guilt by being a spy.
- Snape and Sirius both live in their childhood homes, and they both act as prison. For Sirius, it is imposed on him, for Snape - it seems to be self inflicted.
- anger issues, to put it lightly.
- intensely loyal, and very very brave. But great capacity for cruelty.
- Snape spent his teenage years running away from his Muggle roots, Sirius spends his teenage years running away from aristocratic pureblood house
As my co-writer and friend @thedreamermusing pointed out: "Also: Snape has father issues; Sirius has Mommy issues. Their lives run parallel more or less- Sirius and Snape both form a formative best friend friendship in their childhood, are both drawn sorted in their houses in an effort to cement their own family complexes (Snape and his mom, Sirius and his family), both base their identities om the basis of belonging to a community (Snape-DEs, Sirius- Marauders), both form their moral complexes by becoming the opposite of their roots (Snape loves the dark arts and blood supremacy, Sirius hates the dark arts and hangs muggle posters), both have a cruel sense of humour (Snape thinking dark magic is just a laugh, Sirius thinking feeding Remus Snape a la Carte being a joke), both of them joining a group to further themselves away from their roots after school, both of them risking their lives to protect their bestfriends, both of them making a terrible mistake by trusting the wrong person that leads to their best friend dying, both of them punishing themselves for the next 12 years to atone, both of them using the memory of their bffs as the one shining light in their miserable lives to keep going on, both of them forced in their childhood homes in the last part of their lives, both of them finally dying for Harry."
Essentially, they have a capacity for understanding each other in a way because there is an intense projection involved in how they interact with each other. I have answered bits of that dynamic here and how their dialogue flows, where they throw words back at each other whereas the one with Remus involves Remus taking the rug from under his feet. So yeah, basically I don't see it with Severus and Remus - but like I pointed out, the way I envision the two characters might not align with others :)

Hot opinion: James Potter had a "bad person developed better morals because of love for Lily" arc just like Snape did, and we deserve more content exploring the characteristics and themes they had in common. Thoughts?
I mean, yes, in that all the marauders parallel Snape in some way. However, out of all of them, James is the one who parallels him the least because he’s the least developed as a character. I’d love to explore their existing parallels though, but I doubt that it’d be well recieved by fandom. Most Snape fans dislike James, though a few are indifferent (Jeverus fans are the only real exception). And James fans detest Snape, I’ve found no real exceptions to that rule. (Though I’m sure they exist somewhere). Of course I’ll probably do it someday.
The problem with characters like James is that since we know so little about him it’s hard to state anything with any certainty. Most is just speculation. My interest in him is mostly due to his relationship with the marauders, in that I feel that he’s the glue who held them together, and that they were more James friends who were friends with one another by their relationship with him more than they were a group like the golden trio. I’m fascinated in exploring that. His relationships with Lily and his parents is something that I find less interesting, because while I can make James come to life in my head when I play him off of Sirius and Remus, and I can make Lily (another barely existant character) come to life when I play her off of Snape, I can’t really find much of interest in their relationship, since the two of them are barely developed in text.
Though yes, finding the similarities and differences he has with Snape is an interesting excercise that I might do someday. It’s something that I’ve never really seen. (I mean, I have, but only as a way to make one of them look better, mostly done by obnoxious fans of one of the characters, never as purely an attempt at analysis).
Thanks for the ask!

I've just finished all of your HP fics and I am so impressed by your characterisation of Lily. You really put a lot of thought into her and she is the highlight of every fic you've written her in. Thanks for writing!
AAAAA!!! Thank you, thank you! heh, that's pretty much all my HP fics, as I clearly have a fixation with Lily. It's a bit funny, as in canon she has the personality of a stockphoto, but then again that leaves me with practically an empty canvas to work with.
I love the concept of Lily (and Severus, all of the hints of Lily's personality we do get in canon come adjacent with Severus) a muggleborn from a dying factory-town. This is a girl who would have been hated both by Voldemort and Margaret Thatcher. That's cool as heck. And then for this girl with such a cool set-up, we find out nothing about her actual life??? How can I not latch onto that?
Then combine how much I hate the virgin Mary mother trope, and you have an itch I just cannot stop scratching at.
My Lily is a different character in every fic, but I am very fond of them all. I guess the unifying threads are that in every universe the real Lily gets erased by the time canon starts, when she is given a statue and a status as a martyr and not a single one of the characters is willing to tell any personal information about her to her son. (poor, poor Lily.)
The other is my unwavering belief that the Severus-Lily friendship breakup was a terrible tragedy of two working class children finally giving up and submitting to the hierarchy of the rich. A gryffindor and a slytherin muggleborn and a halfblood are best friends until  the rich purebloods from both houses bully and harass them enough to grind them into realizing that they can either turn against each other or perish. So they give up, and each acquire a rich pureblood man to latch onto (becoming a Potter wife and a Malfoy lapdog). And it's sad, and it makes me sad, so I write fics to cope.
Your blog looks dope as hell, I hope we can talk more?
Right, I should probably also link my fics

I just finished reading "away childish things". I wanted to let you know how much your depiction of Harry's dyslexia moved me. I think this idea makes perfect sense for his character, and I loved the way you showed the impact it had on his self esteem ("under-developed") and how you made it feel really important without making it the focus of the story. I've been told similar things all my life & I just got diagnosed with ADHD so this fic meant a lot to me. Thanks for writing it :)
Thank you. I’m really glad it worked for you.
I’m sorry you have been told similar things, and I’m so glad you found a diagnosis. I have had quite a few friends with ADHD who felt better able to deal with things once they were able to understand what they had; I hope it’s the case for you as well. Thank you for sharing.

So glad to see you defending iron man 3 in the tags, literally my fave iron man movie and my fave marvel movie
Absolutely. It’s my favourite Iron Man and Marvel movie too. I never get tired of seeing it. Awesome character study, Pepper kicking ass. Beautiful Pepperony moments. The best representation of PTSD in a movie ever. As a doctor I had a psichiatry professor that used it in class as an example. Totally a great movie. A favourite.

Tag Game - Fandom Edition
Thank you @ashesandhackles
Your Name: Cat 🐈
First Fandom: I would say Naruto, it's where I actually interacted with the fandom itself.
Current Fandom: My most invested ones: Harry Potter, Naruto. Ones I'm sort of part of: Once Upon a Time, Fruits Basket, Beastars🐱, Ripper Street, Our Flag Means Death, Greek Myth, Rings of Power, Wheel of Time
How did you first get into fandom? I discovered Naruto fanfiction early on, but only got properly sucked into fandom at 21 when I discovered Tumblr and Once Upon a Time. A combo that almost got me failing exams.
How long have you been engaging in fandom spaces? Recently, since 2019. Before then I was more lurking.
How often do you read fanfic? It comes and goes! It depends on my interest in specific characters.
Top three characters from your current fandom? Lupin, Yamato, Tobirama
Have you ever written a fic for a fandom and if so, shout it out! Cat is writing over here
Have you ever drawn fan art for a fandom? Cat is drawing here!
Share a personal headcanon that you feel strongly about:
Lupin is so disgusted by himself that physical intimacy doesn't come easily to him.
Lupin has spent so many years not feeling fully human, like referring to himself as a creature, that physical intimacy doesn't come easily to him. He feels too disgusted by himself for both being wanted and also fearing letting go of his control.
You’re trying to convince a friend to get into your current fandom(s) with you. what episode, clip, or scene are you showing them? For Naruto, I'm going to sit you down with a bowl of Ramen and we'll start with episode one because who would jump to the middle of a season? Nonsense.
And finally, what does fandom mean to you? Going to agree with Ashes and say community.

dragonlordette replied to your post: My biggest takeaway(s) might be that:  Pearl...
I feel the same. I feel a bit guilty about the whole female doctor thing cause I get why ppl wanted her earlier but at the same time Peter could be my fave doctor so secretly I’m happy that he got to do it
Yup, yup, then again, I’m also bitter. I think by the second episode of series eight, people went from, “Fuck this. It should’ve been a woman!!” to “Fuck this, look at this terrible and mean old white guy when we could have had a woman!!! [Insert curses upon Moffat here.]”
But sometime around the end of series eight I decided to get over the Internet making me feel one way or another about what I find myself enjoying in media. I’m a big girl. I like what I like. The characterization for the Capaldi era was magic for the most part and its much-despised showrunner also matured in his writing the most during that era.
And most people who were naysayers seemed to a) be oblivious that heterogeneous thought is allowed in progressive politics (that’s how humans work), b) be promoting reductive self-congratulatory group think in order to fuel their own performative social justice bullshit (and nullify any actual social justice ideals by blatantly behaving in the complete opposite way), and c) had stopped watching early enough that their opinions are hard to count.

Do you think Snape and McGonagall were friends? I'm not convinced the text supports this but a lot of people seem to think they were
I don’t think there’s much canon evidence that they were, though I love the idea (it makes his year as headmaster all the more heartbreaking). McGonagall’s comment of “we all wondered” after Snape killed Dumbledore seems to go against it. And she does seem to have liked the marauders as students, which can’t have endeared her to Snape much.
I think that their relationship was more cordial than anything. I believe that the person in staff which had the best relationship with Snape was probably Hagrid.
Though this is still too little evidence, so I don’t believe that a friendship between the two would contradict canon the way something like Snape being Dracos’ godfather would.

slow burn or love at first sight // fake dating or secret dating // enemies to lovers AND best friends to lovers // oh no there’s only one bed or long-distance correspondence // hurt-comfort or amnesia // fantasy au or modern au // mutual pining or domestic bliss // smut or fluff // canon-compliant or fix-it // reincarnation AND character death // one-shot AND multi-chapter // kid fic or road trip fic // arranged marriage or accidental marriage // high school romance or middle aged romance // time travel AND isolated together // neighbours or roommates // sci-fi au or magic au // body swap or gender bend // angst or crack // apocalyptic or mundane

What would you say to Draco being a sort of mirror image of Sirius Black? Both of them grew up in an abusive home but Sirius left his family and rejected it whilst Draco tried to please his family?
Thanks for the ask 😊
Hmm I’ll answer this with my customary ramble lol.
1. I think Sirius grew up as the spoiled scion of the house of Black. Incredibly materially spoiled but lacking the security of knowing he’s loved for himself. Whereas Draco while also similarly spoiled, knew his parents loved him ( the Malfoys are awful people but younger Draco can always rely on them).
2. I don’t think Sirius arrived at Hogwarts all woke, i think it was a slow process of unlearning his parents prejudice. Whereas Draco only started questioning things when his life was in danger- even then in DH he’s still calling Hermione a ‘mudblood.’ All in all, Sirius comes across as the child that asks why, whereas Draco was happy with the status quo because it benefited him and never questions things too much. Whereas this lack of rebellion and curiosity is anathema to Sirius’s core traits.
3. I doubt Sirius ran to his parents for things like brooms for the entire Gryfindor team or getting a Hippogriff executed .
In some ways they are similar; both first born sons of wealthy, blood fanatic, pureblood families. But fundamentally are very different people, so I don’t think they are mirrors for each other.
Edit: completely agree with @dragonlordette the mirror of Draco is Dudley.
