I like this little moment of silence in this scene in the Garden of Celestian Realm.
Just look at them! Their faces speak for them!
Firstly we have Mei who looks really surprised to see Red Son not yelling or being a chaotic mess. He's just worried about his dad, you know, like a human, like a son who loves his parent. She's realizing that demon has life, thoughts and feelings other than destroying and killing. That he can love or be hurt.
Tumblr media
And after that moment she stops being suspicious about him and starts to trust him and help him.
And on the other hand, Red Son is surprised to see someone stops and actually listens to him.
Tumblr media
He is so confused that Mei says nothing, just stands and listens. That is the very first time someone gives him a little bit of selfless attention. He begged for the attention for such a long time without any results, he's so confused when he already gets it from a stranger/enemy girl.
And since then, he stops using the word "peasants", he stops trying so hard to be the leader and to have everyone's attention. He's more in the background. He becomes a little bit more humble.
It was only a few second of silence, but they both change a lot.
Mei from being violent and suspicious:
Tumblr media
To being supportive and caring:
Tumblr media
And Red Son from playing hero for being in the center:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To being an actual hero by helping in the background:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Conclusion? Well, you can call it "over-analyze", but hear me out! It's not only about their bonding. It's about Red Son becoming a hero after realizing that to gets someone's attention and respect he has to be true himself. It's about Mei realizing that even a demon is a person, even an enemy has feelings, that people who hurt also can love and be hurt. She forgave him and he grew humble and true.
This silence of realization makes a little spark between them and I love it endlessly

Change your side
https://archiveofourown.org/works/35638084/chapters/95292580
Short oneshot I was inspired by the "One Hell of the Team - Red Son/Mei MV" on yt, it's ssssssssoooooooooooooo goooooooodddddd Dragonfire, but can be read romantically Late season 2, around episodes 8-9 2k words enjoy :)
________________________________________________________
Boring day. Boring week. Boring month.
A few months actually.
Mei jumps on another paving stone, trying to avoid the lines on the path. She doesn't really put a heart into this game. People are passing her by almost as much dispassionately. Just another step. Just another jump. Just another song playing in her headphones. Just another day of walking alone through the city.
She got used to it.
- Pitiful.
Mei hears that word although the music. Just another jump. Just another step. The stranger is right. This is pitiful. She doesn’t care though. Caring is also boring.
- Look at you.
Her mouth twists with discontent. She gets it. She really gets it. She’s pitiful, but also not in the mood to talk with a random stranger. Just another step…
- Look at you. You could’ve been much more than this.
She steps on the line. Her face frowns slowly in a heavy, unpleasant feeling. Her hand reaches the pocket to turn off the music.
- I know… - Mei admits, putting her headphones off her ears. The stranger really insists on talking and she really has nothing interesting to do. She turns around, showing the guy her face painted with blue. - I know.
The thin street, where the shadow of a man is standing in, is darker than the night around the city. The stranger is leaning against the wall. He seems to feel cool with the position he has chosen. Mei knows a situation should be suspicious for her, yet the silhouette in the dark looks nicely familiar. However, Mei wouldn’t mind meeting a robber or a backstabber in the middle of the night in the street like this. It’d be quite entertaining.
- Have we ever met? - Her question resonates for a minute, disturbing the silence. As if it doesn’t satisfy the street echo enough, it takes the soft chuckles from the stranger's mouth and throws them against the walls. Mei freezes. Only now, without music from her headphones, she recognizes the male voice. Her face slowly brightens with wide-opened eyes and a genuine smile.
- Red Boy!
The silhouette in the dark shakes and freezes. His eyes glint in the shadow.
- It’s such an honor to meet a hero like you on the street - Mei smiles even wider, bowing slightly in theatrical greeting.
- First of all, I’m not a hero - The light of the night lantern reveals his face as he steps closer. - And my name is Red SON. How hard is that to remember?
His annoyance sounds fake when his eyes still shine at her wide grin with genuine surprise.
- How did I deserve your visit, sir? - Her brow raises teasingly.
The demon’s serious sight studies her face in silence. The long while makes it hard for Mei to keep her wide smile. She almost feels his mind calculating something intensively. Red Son hides his hands behind his back.
- Aren’t you bored? - The calm, but heavy question leaves his mouth.
Mei slowly knits her brows. Her lips don't want to smile anymore, but she forces them to stay lifted.
- It’s boring, isn’t it? - Red Son’s tone is deeply confident. - To stay aside? To be in reserve? To never actually use your power?
Her smile cracks into a firmly clenched line.
- You never use your full potential, don’t you? - A little smirk appears on his lips. - You go to waste by living in Monkie Kid’s shadow.
- What do you want - Mei throws at him through her tightly clenched teeth.
Red Son’s smirk gets wide and challenging. His eyes shine mischievously, pinned into her.
- Nothing - He shrugs his shoulders with fake humility. - I’ve just noticed that… you walk alone lately.
- Stalker - Mei mumbles harshly. Red Son chuckles softly, but the word makes his lips shake a little in discomfort.
- He left you.
The girl tries to ignore the cold chill running down her back. The lower and deeper the demon’s voice gets, the harder it is to stand calmly.
- He didn’t even care enough to tell you why - His sight doesn't leave her eyes even for a moment. - Am I right?
Mei looks away.
- Don’t you feel used? Did he thank you for what you’ve done for him even once? You were such a perfect friend, following his dreams and protecting him from any danger. And what did he give you in return? He abandoned you. But I won’t.
Mei turns back to the demon's wide smirk only to see his hand reaching to her in silent offer.
- Join me - His tone never was so deep as he whispers the forbidden words. - Change the side. You will never be satisfied here with them. But with me, you’ll be finally able to spread your dragon wings! What do you say?
The grimly dark street freezes, only to fill with the sound of loud laughter jumping between the walls..
- So that is your plan! - Mei’s grin comes back on her face with relieving amusement. - You will starve Monkie Kid of his best sidekick, making him weaker and yourself stronger. Mk would be completely naked now when Wukong is gone somewhere - She crosses her arms on her chest. - I have to say, it’s pretty clever.
- Wouldn’t that be interesting though? - His hand recoils unhurriedly, while the wide smirk stays unshakably on his lips.
- To leave my safe home and loving friends for a dirty lava cave?
Red Son huffs outraged.
- It’s a castle! And no, I didn't mean to convince you to move to my house!
- I like this restaurant with noodles, you know? - Mei gets down to look up at him teasingly.
- And you know that Noodle Boy doesn't need you to protect him anymore - The demon frowns at her seriously. - You’re never gonna live the life you want with him.
- Huh? So would I if I were on your side? - She throws, twisting her mouth.
- Well, yes. No one will stop you from using your full potential. You will have your own stage, out of the shadow they’re keeping you in. Don’t you understand? This is your chance for something great! - He spreads his arms in emotions. - You can be much more than just a sidekick. You know that.
- For what? - Her chin raises proudly. - For what reason should I use this much power? Why would I want it?
- For yourself! - The demon bridles.
- Well, that isn’t very convincing - Mei hides her hands in the pockets of her hoodie.
- You haven’t said “no” though - Red Son points out, putting his hands behind his back.
The night between them freezes. The time seems to stop for a long minute as they gaze at each other. Yet Mei’s half-opened mouth doesn't move, even a little.
- You didn’t say “no”! - The demon calls out, smiling wider than ever before.
- I also didn’t say “yes”! - She protests, spreading her arms.
- But you consider this all!
She takes a deep breath and stays with her mouth opened widely.
- You do - His voice is filled with wild satisfaction. - You are bored. You do not feel your place between them. You consider leaving them.
Mei titles her head back, hiding her face in her hands.
- Yes! - She explodes with anger. - Yes, I do consider it! But don’t you also feel out of place here? Is this really your fight?
Red Son’s face sets sharply as if she hits him with a pan.
- They fight for things that you’re really mine! - Mei throws words out of herself in visible pain. - Mk protects the city on his own, he really doesn’t ask me for help, and usually, if he does, my help is mostly tidying up the mess he did or the mess some demon did to get revenge. If I’m his best friend, why doesn't he include me in anything? If I’m his sidekick, why does he always fight alone, even if he says he needs us? Yes, he did abandon me! Yes, this isn’t really my fight or my problems. But aren’t you in the same situation? Aren’t you tired of being used for someone’s goals? Aren’t you tired of doing everything your parents want you to?
- I’m… They don’t force me to do anything - His voice shakes slightly.
- But is this you? Is this what you are, what you want, are you spreading your wings in this way? By making their dreams come true? By getting their revenge?
His face is all frowned as he stands tense and stressed, touched and confused, almost stepping back from her. Mei studies his eyes with an empty mind, with an empty heart, with a hurt soul, cursing him discreetly for making her say those things and face the truth. The truth of being alone and not really herself.
- Don’t you just want to spend some quality time with your dad? - Mei asks helplessly.
The demon shrinks and gasps quietly as if she nabbed him, as if she tore the deeply hidden secret out of him and showed it to the world. He huffs and frowns in protests, but words just let him down. His arms get lost somewhere in the air.
- Well, okay, maybe you’re right - He moans pitifully, playing confident by crossing his arms on his chest. - Suppose you are right, and what? I’ll come back home and try to spend some time with my father, and what about you? What will you do, huh?
Her arms hang loosely with helplessness. She gazes at him with genuine sadness, not trying to hide it anymore.
- What can I do? - Her whisper is so pitiful the echo doesn't want to touch it.
Red Son blinks at her with surprise.
- I don’t want to leave Mk - She goes on, looking down. She hides her hands in her pockets. - He’s still my friend. And so the others. I’m not that close with them and they are not that fun, but… I guess I’m not alone?
- You are - Red Son huffs. - Your best friend left you. And you decide not to do anything with that just to be loyal to your only friend? It’s only you who keeps you alone.
- Ouch - She gives him a really tired sight.
- It’s true! Why don’t you try to change it? Meet someone new?
Mei takes a deep breath and hesitates for a long breathless moment. Does she want to talk with the demon about her complexes? No. Is she gonna turn the question on its head? Yes.
- Well, why don’t you? Aren’t you also alone? - She looks at him challengingly. - Poor lonely demon talking only to your parents. Have you tried to make a friend? Hm?
His reaction is not what Mei expected. His eyes open widely as he looks away with an odd shy grimace. The moment he bits his lip something finally clicks in her mind. She gasps, maybe a bit too loud, and then collapses into giggles.
- What’s so funny - The demon grunts, frowning at her with annoyance. His cheeks tint with a subtle red shade.
Mei laughs. Mei laughs, Mei simply laughs, Mei genuinely smiles, she’s genuinely amused, she beams with new energy, feeling lighter, feeling more comfortable, feeling in the right place. She makes one step towards him, raising her chin proudly.
- Listen to me, demon - Mei stands upright and smirks mischievously, imitating his confident pose and tone. - I have an offer for you. Forget about sides. Forget about fighting - She shows him her hand the way he offered her his hand before. - Forget about being sidekicks. Let’s take our own stage. And I know the right place! What is your opinion on video games?
His eyes open even wider. His sight wanders on turns to her hand and her bright smirk. There is something genuinely pure in his face. He doesn’t smile, he doesn’t make any sound or any grimace, but he looks brighter. A fresh hint of joy flashes in his eyes.
- They are fine - He looks away, frowning with pride like a prince. His hand shyly shakes her hand. - I’ve never tried them though…
- You haven’t?? - Mei gasps, surprising him by getting close to his face. - Now we HAVE TO run to the arcade!
- Run? - Red Son squeaks as she pulls him to sprint in an unknown direction.

Fanfic idea
Mei finds out red son doesn't have any friends and she feels bad for him because it reminds her of the time when she didn't have any friends when she was a kid because her parents didn't want their precious family history to be destroyed or broken by wild little kids.
She realizes they have a lot more in common then she thought.
Maybe not a fanfic, but oneshot for sure
i like this. let me see what i can do...
season 3 spoilers btw

- What are you doing?
Mei blinks at the demon's shocked face. He gazes at her hand that hangs in the air with a has flake right in front of his nose.
- I'm sharing my food with you? You've brought me haw flakes, but you don't touch them.
- Cause I've brought them for you - Red Son pushes her hand away carefully. - They're yours.
- But I want to share them with you! - Her face grimaces with a little irritation. - I like sharing food with my friends!
The demon's chocolate eyes fill with odd dim feelings. His sight becomes vacant, he stares at something far behind her. Mei puts down her hand, frowning at the demon with misunderstanding.
- You... Don't have any friends?
Red Son looks away. He clears his throat while his mouth gets a bit twisted.
- No, I had a lot of friends! - His chin gets up famously. He grabs a bun from the basket he brought to the woods and Mei's sight stops on it for a moment. The demon stays here with her, sleeps on the tough ground, brings her food, stays awake at night if she loses control of the True Fire during her sleep... He would stay in his huge rich castle with soft beds and substantial meals instead, but he has chosen to be here. In dirty peasant woods.
But well, what's good in luxury if the mansion is always empty and unvisited? The enormous majestic cage that parents never let other children into... Actually feels pretty familiar. Mei looks down at the haw flakes in her hand, heaving a sigh.
- You know, before I met Mk, I didn't have any friends either...
She bites her flake and starts chewing it slowly. When she raises her gaze at Red Son, his eyes are pinned into her with a strange little spark in their corners. He frowns at her, finishing his bun.
- At least you have friends now - He huffs, more to himself than to her.
- I don’t feel like having them now either - Her voice sounded more grievous than she wanted to. Mei clears her throat and smiles gently at the demon. - But at least I have someone to share my haw flakes with
Red Son blows a raspberry when her hand with the snack appears in front of his face again. The corner of his lips lifts up slightly when he takes it from her.

A little dragonfruit oneshot for free <3
However, if you want to read sth about Dragonfire (Red Son and Mei platonically), you can also read it, but stop on the sentence “Until the moment the moment lasted a few seconds too long...”
____________________________________________________
Mei was lying on the table the whole break between the rounds with her face hidden in her arms. It was just too much for one night, all she wanted was to go home.
The sound of the bell called out the next turn. Mei didn't make even the slightest movement, just groaned out quietly in pain. The very moment she heard someone took a seat in front of her, she murmured as loud as she could to not sound oppressive:
- Please, if you don't like dragons and you don't know at least one video game, just leave me in peace.
Surprisingly, the answer she got was a genuine laugh.
- I thought you were dead - The male voice admitted. - But we both agree to not talk, so it's still a perfect seat.
Mei frowns. The voice sounded oddly familiar. She got up and met a tired sight of chocolate eyes. She viewed, the man quickly. Red trench coat. Red ponytail. Little glasses. The scar on right cheek. They both gasped suddenly.
- It's you?! - They screamed out in perfect sync, widening their eyes at each other. Mei blinked twice at the demon, not being sure if she's not dreaming.
- What are you doing in a speed-dating club? - Red Son asked first. - I thought you already had someone.
- I don't - Mei grimaced, looking away. - That's why Mk forced me to go here. At first, I thought "why not? I can't be that bad". And guess what? It is worse than in my lowest expectations! - She gesticulated with frustration. - And you? I would've never ever thought I would meet you here!
- Me neither - Red Son huffed, looking away. - My parents forced me to. They said I should find someone, but I think they just want to distract my attention from the barbeque booth so they could close it behind my back.
They sat in dead tired silence for a while, staring at each other mindlessly. The chatter around suggested viciously that everyone else in the club had fun. Except them two of course.
- Let's get out of here - Mei threw, breaking the silence.
Red Son's face slowly brightened with a wide smirk.
Soon they were running through the town, just forward, only to be as far as possible  from the cursed place. Their faces were painted with evil smiles of triumphant jailbreakers.
- So - Mei panted, not slowing down even a bit. - Where are we going?
- I don’t know! I thought you knew, it was your idea - Red Son called out.
The dragon girl smiled widely.
- So can we go wherever I want?
- Well, nothing’s worse than a speed-dating club - He admitted.
- In that case, I know the perfect place! - She called out while getting even faster.
*        *       *
- Ha! - Red Son shouted, jumping from the game’s pad. He raised his arms like a winner. - I won! I finally won!
- That was luck - Mei frowned at the game, leaning against it with her elbow.
- But it’s still a win! - Red Son showed her his tongue like a kid. - And you said you were a master of this game, loser!
- Hey, I’ve still won with you, like 10 times, before you won once - Mei crossed her arms on her chest, smiling widely at the demon’s childish behavior.
- Just let me have this moment when I can call you a loser - Red Son leaned against the arcade machine, smirking as if he’s the coolest guy in the arcade.
- Oh, I’m gonna yank this stupid smile off your face in the next round! - Mei laughed ominously, grabbing the pad.
- No, wait! - Red Son chuckled, raising his open hands. - Give me a break! It’s like… 10th video game? I am exhausted - He unclasped his red trench coat, took it off, and tied it around his waist, just like Mei had done with her green jacket an hour ago. He heaved a sigh, looking around the arcade. - Is there anything to drink?
- Over there - She pointed at the table nearby. Red blinked at two bottles of water, one already half empty. - I bought them when you were in the toilet.
- Oh, neat - He came to the little table and grabbed the full bottle. He opened it, and drank almost half of it at once. He turned around and leaned against the table, glancing at Mei's blank face.
- Are you sad because I won? - Red Son asked, frowning.
- No… it’s just… - The girl looked away, sighing heavily. - Never mind. I was just thinking.
- Okay - The demon shrugged his arms. - By the way, can I ask you something?
- Go on
- Why were you… lying and dying there? - He put his bottle back on the table, not looking at her. - You know, in the speed-dating club.
Mei blew a raspberry.
- You don’t have to answer - He added, seeing her hesitation. - I just don’t understand. You are cool and pretty and stuff. I thought, you know… - He twisted his mouth, looking up. His hand was drawing a circle in the air while he was trying to find good words.
- Okay, first of all, thank you - Mei chuckled. - And the second… Well… - She clicked her tongue. - It is not like you think. I mean, I’m not seen as a “cool and pretty girl”. They usually use the word “weird”.
Red Son frowned at her, surprised.
- You see - She leaned against the machine, looking down. - People in the club were getting really uncomfortable when I mentioned I'm a shape-shifting dragon. But on the other hand, when I didn’t mention it, I heard comments like “Why can’t you hold an eyecontact?”, “Stop fidgeting”, “You’re acting like a kid”, “You are changing topics so quickly!” “Don’t get so emotional” “You’re so nervous!”, “You’re too expressive”, “You are gesticulating too much”, oh yes, I am! - Mei shouted, throwing her hands in the air. She started gesticulating with frustration. - I am waving my arms around while speaking, I am very expressive, I am very emotional! I’m a dragon, it’s like having ADHD and… - She stopped suddenly, huffing and staring at her hands. She put them into the pockets in her pants. - One guy, he tried to be nice, but when I admitted who I was, he looked at me in this really weird way. He was viewing me, staring at my lips, with a face like he imagined kissing me as the most disgusting thing in the world…
- Jerk - Red Son huffed, leaning against the machine next to her. She didn’t notice when he came back there. - That sucks
- Yeah, that wasn’t the best night - She showed him her disgusted face. - Never again.
The demon blew a raspberry, smiling and looking down.
- Yeah…
Mei was gazing at him for a while before she broke the silence with asking:
- And you?
He gave her a surprised look.
- What about me?
- Why were you so exhausted back then?
- Same reasons - He grimaced, closing his eyes with a cringe. - The second person almost panicked when I said I was a fire demon.
Mei chuckled slightly.
- They called me nervous, jerk, bummer… - He started enumerating with his fingers. - Impatient, impulsive, weird, nasty and rude cause after the 8th person I started every conversation with “I’m Red Son, yes It’s a real name, It’s not my nickname, it’s a NAME, and what’s yours?”
Mei collapsed a giggle, making him smile slightly.
- You see, the problem is, I have no idea how to do those “small talks” - He admitted. - I didn’t expect it to be so tortuous. People asked me personal questions and got annoyed when I didn't want to answer any of them. Also no one liked my hobbies. I guess tinkering with machines isn’t as fun as I thought…
- You’re kidding, tinkering is super fun! - Mei beamed with such pure, natural excitement. Red gazed at her smile for a while, a bit surprised.
- Well, I guess I found someone - He smiled back, but immediately turned sad and looked down. - So… Small talks were super new to me. And really awkward. You know, I had only my mother to talk to my whole life. And she is sometimes more boring than an empty cave.
- You… Hadn’t had friends before? - Mei asked with pure surprise in her voice.
Red blinked twice, gazing at her.
- Before what?
- Before we met - A gentle smile decorated her face. - We’re friends now, aren’t we?
A weird wave of pleasant relief washed over him, melting his face and calming his breath. He smiled back at her jade green eyes.
- Yeah… - He replied quietly, his voice sounded a bit lower.
It was hard to describe this moment. They were sharing this long, innocent sight, losing the sense of time for a while. They breathed with an air that magic feeling of being understood. If anyone had walked by next to them, they would have thought they were hopelessly in love, but they didn’t really feel it that way.
Until the moment lasted a few seconds too long…
- Umm… - Mei looked at the game screen, feeling her mind freezing deadly on the awkward question “what just happened”. She shook her head to put herself together. - Wanna play another round?
She didn’t look at the demon, just heard him clearing his throat.
- Sure, why not? - His tone sounded a bit unnatural.
They played again, but it was a really bad round. The game was a classic robot fight, when two players punched and kicked each other until one of them killed the other. Before every round you had to create your own robot, giving them weapons with all kinds of power. The game was full of loud sounds and overegged special effects. The fight itself was pretty hard cause the battle platform constantly moved and changed in the very unpredictable way. They played it so many times, so this part of the game wasn’t really a problem for them. Well, at least it used to. Cause in that round they both were more fighting to survive than fight with each other. It made Mei very frustrated, cause she was called the master of this game not without a reason. But after 15 minutes she gave up trying, hitting the pad with her head.
- Maybe we should stop - Mei sighed. - It’s senseless, I can’t focus at all.
- Yeah, me neither - Red Son rubbed his eyebrows with his hand. - Enough arcade games for one night.
- Maybe we’re just tired - Mei murmured. - It’s pretty late after all.
- Walk you home?
The dragon girl blinked, looking up at the demon. She suddenly felt quite good as if her body forgot it’s tired.
- Yeah - She smiled gently. - That would be nice.
*        *        *
*         *        *
- So… - Red Son looked up at the huge green gate. - I guess it’s here.
- Yeah… - Mei said quietly. It was hard to not notice a sad note in her voice.
- It was a nice night after all - The demon said, still staring at the gate. His chocolate eyes beamed a bit dreamly. - I’m almost glad I went to this cursed speed-dating club.
Mei chuckled, smiling gently. She looked at him and already felt she would miss him. Her hand got deeper into the pocket of her green jacket. She finally found her pen and smiled.
- Come here - She threw, grabbing Red Son’s arm. She pulled up his sleeve without asking for permission.
- Hey, what are you… - He started protesting, but then froze when she began writing something on his wrist.
- It’s my number - She finished writing and put her pen back in her pocket, smiling widely at him.
- You mean, a phone number? - He asked, stroking the figures with his finger. He bit his lip and looked at her shyly. - I don’t have a phone.
Her smile immediately disappeared. She rolled her eyes with a chuckle and started looking for something in her pocket again. She took out a green phone and tapped its screen for a while. Then she took out a card from it and put off the green dragon case.
- Take this - She handed him the phone. - I reseted it, it’s all yours.
Red Son stared at her hand with his face painted with shock.
- Calm down, I have dozens of them - She encouraged him by waving the phone in front of him like a treat. - My parents pay for every one of them, they won’t notice that you use it.
- That’s still a lot of money… - The demon still hesitated.
- And I am super rich - She smirked almost challengingly.
He finally grabbed the phone, twisting his mouth shyly. He turned on the screen and the blue light brightened his face.
- How can I make it up to you? - He asked.
- Just text me first.
The demon looked up at her and smiled back.
- You know how to use it? - She lifted her eyebrow.
- No, but I’ll figure it out - He shrugged his arms, putting the phone into his pocket. - I’ve touched much more complicated technology before. I’ve just never had a reason to have a phone - He pulled up slightly his sleeve, looking at the number on his wrist. - Well, now I have.
He smiled at her again, but this time she looked away, blinking.
- So… See you later? - Mei put both of her hands in her pockets. Her arms straighten, stretching her jacket down.
- Yeah, see you. Good night.
- G’night.
They stood very still for a really long while. The silence of the town was a bit overwhelming all of the sudden.
- Well, umm… You can go home - Red Son suggested shyly.
- And you can pyroportation away - She pointed out, clasping her hands together and pointing at him with a finger gun.
Red Son sighed deeply and heavily, looking away and blushing slightly. He hesitated a bit before he stepped closer, narrowing the distance between them. She watched with a blush as he gently grabbed her hand and lifted it to his lips, planting a simple warm little kiss.
- Good night, Dragon Girl - He smiled widely and shyly, blushing but looking right into her eyes.
Mei blew a raspberry, looking away with an awkward but really wide smile. Her cheeks were red, the demon’s hand was warm, and it was all just so stupid.
- G'night, Red Boy - She said, glancing at his chocolate eyes.
He left her hand, stepped back and disappeared with a blast of fire. She covered her face with her hands, groaning out into them. She took her fingers into her hair, closing her eyes tightly, just couldn't stop smiling like stupid, just couldn’t stop blushing.
Yeah, it was a nice night after all.

Note
I hope there's bonding between red and mei in season 4 while in the fire training
There has to be, my dear!
It's hard not to take to the person who helps you and comforts you after the enormous trauma you went through. I personally would hug the man who was looking for me to get me back my fav plush and help with my trauma. I would hug him and cry, cause this all is just too much
So im pretty curious how Mei would react in the first couple of minutes. Cause tbh their relationship depends on how she would react
She punched him and stole his car, so saying "im sorry" is the right thing to do, MEI
I'm like
If Mei doesn't at least appreciate Red Son for what he did, she doesn't deserve him, im sorry
But I think their bond would be one of this strong and healthy relationship, based on slow-building trust and respect. He'll become her comfort zone, she'll become his the closest friend. If you look closer, they have a long of in common, their personalities are so similar, but it's hard to see it at the first look. And we'll see, maybe one of them step in, go deeper, say one more nice word than it has to be said, cut the distance between them even more... We'll see, we'll see
I am sooo curious what the training would look like. I have some ideas, but well, we'll see. Red Son as a Mentor is more than I asked for *chef kiss* can't wait

A spy
https://archiveofourown.org/works/35638084/chapters/89173207
This is fun.
Dragonfire. A platonic one. I have just fun with Red Son's perspective, him being constantly stressed.
This is like a week or two before "The Return of Spider Queen".
It can be hard to read, 'cause it's all Red’s thoughts and nothing else. Only things he sees and thinks. So sometimes you have to focus and guess what is happening or who is speaking. I'm sorry. I tried to help with fonds, but also I really want to keep that funny perspective.
Enjoy.
__________________________________________________
Okay. It's here. Pigsy's Noodles. They definitely couldn't find a bigger sign. I hope my disguise is okay, I hope they won't recognize me. Black wig, face mask, different glasses. It was hard to hide my scar, but well, maybe they won't notice.
I miss my red trench coat. This hoodie is a bit too small. It would be better if I could BUY myself a hoodie instead of stealing it. I would choose a size and a color. That would be cool…
But my parents will never agree to earn honest money.
Okay, here we go. It's spy time.
This is the easiest mission they gave me. Like it’s just go there, talk a bit and leave. I can’t disappoint this time. It is not possible.
Father will be proud, or maybe at least satisfied. Or at least not disappointed.
Come on, Red Son, go in.
I'm in. This place is a bit bigger than I thought. Huh. Okay, quick look around and sit somewhere, standing in the door is suspicious. The pig in the kitchen, the weak guy at this table, some customers, okay, okay, the dragon-horse girl at the counter. There is no Noodle Boy…? No, I can’t see him, maybe he delivers noodles somewhere, it’s okay, I can wait. Or maybe I don’t need him. His friends should also know his weaknesses. Okay so… The girl or the weak guy? I think Noodle Boy spends more time with The dragon girl. She should know more. Okay, I’m sitting next to her.
She’s… Not on her phone? Huh. That’s weird. And she doesn’t seem to be interested in eating her noodles. Stop playing with your chopsticks in the bowl, it’s very uncivil. You peasants have no idea about manners.
OH NO THE PIG GUY IS COMING HERE, HE’S LOOKING DIRECTLY AT ME, WHAT SHOULD I DO….
- Do you want to order something?
Oh. I forget I’m in the restaurant. Yeah, I should order something. But first I should ask:
- Can I get a menu?
- Sure
- Thank you, sir
And he’s gone. It’s good, I have a bit of time. Do I have money? Let me see pockets… Oh, okay, the guy I stole the hoodie from had money in his pockets. Idiot. Okay, so I have some money… Okay, it’s okay, I can buy these spicy noodles, that gives me some alibi why I am here for so long. I love when problems solve themselves. I’ll wait till the pig is back.
This girl looks really sad. What happened to her? Can I just ask her? “Hi! What’s wrong with you, girl??” Yeah, that sounds very natural and not suspicious at all. I have to think, think quicker, I have to be clever. How to make her tell me about Noodle Boy’s weaknesses?
- Do you know what you want to order, sir?
OH MY GOSH, he scared me, oh my goodness. How does this thick pig move so quietly? Okay, so I’m gonna order…
- This - Yeah, pointing at the menu makes me look really smart. Gosh, I feel like one of those peasants . - The spicy one.
Money on the table and here we go.
- Okay, just wait 5 minutes.
- Thank you.
And he’s gone again. Why is this pig so thick.
Okay, it’s probably a good moment to start a conversation with that girl. How to start, think, Red Son, think.
- Hello there - Yeah, that was really…
- Hi.
Oh wow, it WORKS! What to say next, quickly, WHAT SHOULD I SAY NEXT?
- It’s such a nice, sunny day.
Weather. Such a perfect topic to start talking about your enemy’s weakness. Why am I such an idiot all of the sudden?
Is she gonna answer or…?
- Yeah, sunny like every day.
Ouch. Oh, this is so awkward.
- Yeah, umm… I like it? I like that every day is sunny. It’s my favorite weather. I hate rain. Rain is the worst.
Aaaannnndddd now she is looking at me like at an idiot. Perfect. I am an idiot. I’ll fail this mission, one of the easiest missions, and I’m gonna disappoint my father again, why everything I do ends up as a complete failure…
- Your noodles, sir.
GOSH, he scared me again!
- Th-thank you, sir.
- No problem. Enjoy your meal.
So. I have the noodles. I can sit here as long as I’m eating those. I hope it’s edible. Cause the dragon girl looks at her bowl without any sign of appetite.
I can’t just give up here. Let’s try again. AAAhhh, awkward, awkward, awkward…
- So how are your noodles?
…why is she laughing at me now? Was that funny? I dunno, was that funny???
- You really want to talk, hm?
Yeah, exactly, you guessed it, I want to talk, TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT NOODLE BOY
Okay, I can’t say it at loud.
- I’m sorry, I’m just… Not in the mood to talk right now.
…Oh she sounds so pitiful. I can’t just force her to talk when she looks so depressed. I’m a demon, but god damn it, I’m not a monster. Maybe I should go talk to the weak guy.
- I’m sorry, I force you to talk… You girl.
Aaaannnddd she’s laughing again.
- My name is Mei.
…Should I introduce myself? Quick, some random male chinese name!
- My name is Hong.
- Nice to meet you, Hong.
I’m not so sure if it is nice to meet me. If you know who I am, you wouldn’t be so happy.
I’m gonna take a risk and ask her directly.
- So… What happened?
Oh, she sighs so heavily, don’t look at this bowl like that, just stop, STOP, stop making me feel compassion!
- You know, my best friend, Mk… we used to spend a lot of time together…
Oh. OOOHHH. Go on. I’m all ears.
- We were going to school together, we hung out every single day. And then he started to work here. He does not have a lot of time for me now, so I go here every day to spend even a bit of time with him, then we go to this party club… Well, we used to…
What party club? Give me a name! Should I just ask about it?
- What party club?
- That doesn’t matter.
Shit.
- But then he found this… Umm, someone? A teacher. Well, basically, he started learning martial arts.
She is talking about Sun Wukong. Good. Good.
- And he disappears sometimes. Today is one of those days I don’t see him at all.
…should I say something now? She’s silent for a while.
- That’s… that’s rough.
- Yeah… You know, I don’t really have anyone except him. No one to talk to, no place to go. I have my parents, there is Pigsy, Tang and Sandy, but… That’s not the same.
…I…I didn’t know…
...
This.
It hits me. Why.
I feel you. I hate that I feel you.
- It’s just… I feel just lonely sometimes.
So we have more in common than I expected.
I can’t believe I’m gonna actually go into this…
- I know what that feeling is.
And now she is looking at me, I can’t hold that look, just stop staring at me, you made me feel so… So bad. Heavy. Why my heart is so…
I can’t, I just can’t. This mission is a disaster. I didn’t want this. I didn’t want to be here. I don’t care about those people, I don’t care about this Staff, not really, I don’t care about this Noodle Boy, it is all what my father wants to…
That’s not mine. That’s not what I want.
What do I want…
- I don’t have anybody - I don’t really know why I am still talking about it. - Friends or… I have only my mother. I hoped when my father came back, it would be better, but… I feel like it’s even worse now. I thought I wanted it, but I don’t, I don’t want what is happening now.
I am not gonna cry. I am not gonna cry. I am not…
- I don’t really know what I want.
Is she still staring at me? Yes, she is. Now she has compassion in her eyes, oh gosh, that is so pathetic. That is so pathetic, why am I telling her all of this?
It feels so painfully real when I said that. But I said that. I finally said that at loud.
- I think this is my very first conversation with anybody but my parents…
I am not begging her to be my friend.
I am not enjoying being listened to.
I am not gonna cry. I am an adult male, I am a 420 years old demon, I am not soft, I am not weak, I am not opening up in front of an enemy stranger, I am not…
Screw it, my eyes are already wet.
Why is she staring at me like that… Please, stop, I don’t need your compassion, I don’t need your empathy…
I hate that that actually sounded like a lie.
- We can be friends.
She said that. She really said that. I can’t believe she said that. I can’t believe she is smiling at me. I can’t believe I want to accept the offer! I really feel like I want to…
Oh, if you only know who I really am. You wouldn’t smile like that. You would never smile like that at me in my real face.
- You can come here whenever you want. We can talk. Just like now.
…I would love to.
- I can’t - Yeah, I had to say that. - I don’t know what will happen if my parents get to know…
…what is she doing? A piece of paper, a pen… What is she writing? That’s… Numbers?
- This is my number. You can call me whenever you want.
….
Oh gosh.
- I-I don’t have a phone… I’m sorry…
And she is not smiling anymore. I’m sorry. I am disappointment, not a friend.
What is she doing? Two phones, I see, you have two phones, you don’t have to show me how rich you are. Wait… Wait, you reset it? Do I understand it right? Are you resetting one of your phones? Why?
You take off the dragon cover, you confuse me so much.
- Take this. I reset it. It’s all yours. I pay for line rental.
….
….
- Don’t look like that, I’m serious, take it. Now you can call me.
…My hand is shaking. She’s smiling. She’s smiling at my shocked face. I’m curious about what I look like right now.
I can’t believe… She really… she is… Oh, this is just too much.
I can’t take it. I want to take it. I wish I could come here every day. Just talk to people like a normal random civilian. I wish I could call her. I wish I could be her friend.
I feel oddly warm.
I wish to feel like that every day.
Can I stay here a little bit longer? Do my parents notice it? Nah, they don’t care.
I could stay. I can’t believe I smile at the dumb peasant’s phone.
- Thank you.
- Just call me whenever you want.
- I… I’m not sure if I can promise that…
Oh no, I make her sad. Nooo… why am I so soft all of the sudden, why do I care, guh.
- That’s okay.
I hate that smile of hers. She is doing that on purpose, she wants me to stay, maybe this is a trap, maybe she knew who I was from the very beginning…
Oh, I wish she knew. I wish she knew and still smiled.
What am I thinking like what
- I didn’t answer your question about my noodles.
I can’t believe she still wants to talk with me.
- They are not so tasty. I just asked for the wrong flavor, the one I don’t like. I’m just not really thinking consciously today, ya know.
She chuckled. I’m smiling. This is… weird and nice. Talking.
Maybe I can fix her noodles? I know something about seasoning.
- Let me see.
Huh, her bowl is already cold. I shouldn’t use my fire, don’t do that, Red Son, hold yourself.
Okay, so this doesn’t taste that bad. But I see what she’s talking about. Luckily, there are some spices here.
Yup, that is good. A bit of this… And this. Okay, this will be useful too. Mixing, mixing, mixing…
Hm, it’s better. I hope it is better for her.
- Taste it now.
Now, waiting for a reaction…
Yes, she likes it! Ha, I’m not so useless, I'm a good friend. Congratulations, Red, you’re a good friend.
I can’t believe those were my thoughts.
- This is really good!
Aw, thank you, I know I am a genius.
- You really can cook!
- Thanks.
- Have you thought about a food booth or something?
…what did she just say.
- I would eat your food if you opened a food booth.
- You would?
- Yeah.
Hah. Maybe… maybe I could open a food booth. That’s… That’s kind of an idea.
- You haven’t tried your noodles yet.
Oh, good point, I haven’t.
They are nice. I need it spicier, here we go.
- Wow, you like spicy!
- A lot.
- So we have the same taste.
Oh.
- Do you want some chilly pepper then?
- Yess, drop the whole thing into my bowl!
Pff, she’s such a dork.
How long can I stay here? Is the weak guy also nice? Maybe the pig is not so terrible. I hope he isn’t as intimidating as he looks.
I’m staying.
- What time does this place close?

A spider web
https://archiveofourown.org/works/35638084/chapters/89623405
It’s just a Dragonfire short oneshot (the plathonic Red Son and Mei if you still don’t know).  One of those things I don't really know why I wrote. It's the scene from Revenge of the Spider Queen, if you watched it, you know what is happening Enjooyyy _____________________________________________
Well, so this is awkward.
The fight didn't last even a minute.  Mk threw himself at the Spider Queen and was immediately returned like a ball, hitting the ground with the huge rumble. And then they all let the spiders catch them into their webs.
So now, however it has happened, Mei and Red Son are sharing the same web, squeezed tightly and forced to absolute stillness. Their backs are pressing against each other, their hair is one big black-red mess. Mei has the whole red ponytail on her head and Red Son feels her thin black hair sinking by the nape of his neck. It is hard to move without rubbing one other, it is hard to even breathe without making the grip of the web tighter. To make it even more uncomfortable, their hands are almost one in the other and every even the slightest movement makes it even worse.
So yeah, the longer they sit there in a weird position, led against the debris, the more awkward is every single breath.
Mei looks around, but the others are out of her sight. The sudden stillness, increased by lack of any action, is just so unbearable. She turns around, as far as she can, to take a look at her fateful companion.
- Can you burn the web? - She asks hopefully. She hears a rough short "no" and groans out. - Why?
- I would hurt you.
- We're already hurt - Mei points out, painfully feeling the bruises on her back and arms. - We were thrown quite hard on the ground. And the web is really tight.
She doesn't hear an answer. The more she tries to see the demon's face, the more the web binds her, rubbing painfully her arms and chest.
- Oh, come on! - She gives up, kicking the ground with her luckily free legs. - Just burn it! I'm a shape-shifting dragon, I regenerate myself real fast! I won't sit here and wait for a miracle!
- I don't want to hurt you, Mei - Red Son sounds a bit annoyed, but his voice is calm and slightly shaking. - I'm begging you, don't bug me.
Mei lifts her eyebrow, even if she knows he doesn't see it.
- Or what? - She throws. - You burn us, so we leave this web?
Suddenly his ponytail on her head gets much warmer. His whole back warms up. His arms warm up. His hands warms up. She freezes in terror, feeling the demon's body. Oh, she remembers clearly how it looks like when Red Son gets mad.
The web gets tighter. She hears his loud deep breaths right behind her head. With his every calm exhale his body temperature cools down slightly. After a minute or two, it is all okay again. She lets herself sigh quietly with relief.
- Shut up - He huffs after a long while. His voice sounds oddly weak.
A pitiful yawp leaves Mei's mouth. She looks helplessly at her dirty pants. The seconds feel like minutes, minutes feel like hours, and it is all just a torture filled with sounds of a distant fight and screaming people. Mei leans her head against Red Son's, closing her eyes. He doesn't protest, doesn't move. She heaves a sigh.
- Thank you, ya know... - She whispers.
Red Son doesn't reply for a moment, but he turns slightly as if he tries to look at her.
- For what?
- Well, first of all, for trying so hard to not burn me down - She chuckles. - It's really nice of you. You could kill me and escape.
She hears his annoyed groan, which makes her smile.
- And second, for fighting on my side. You were protecting me from the webs.
- I didn't - He bursts out. - I didn't save us, as you can see.
- But you tried - She turns to him, a bit even further this time, she almost reaches the top of his nose with her sight. - That's what matters.
- No - He grunts harshly. - I messed up. They got us in less than a minute. Stop calling me a hero, it's ridiculous!
He huffs. He stops, taking a few deep breaths to calm down. His head leans against her, which makes her blink with surprise.
- I'm just one of the disappointments from the background - He adds with a weak voice.
Mei chuckles, she never chuckled so sarcastically.
- So welcome in the club, buddy - She throws, before a gentle ironic giggle.
For a one quiet moment they are just breathing calmly, almost in one rhythm, letting their heads touch each other.
- Ya know, I envy you for your cool fire powers - Mei breaks the silence. - I have just my sword… It looks pretty lame on the background of Sun Wukong's successor.
- Gush, he's so annoyingly showing off with the Stuff - Red Son blows a raspberry, making her chuckle. - And at the first meeting he could barely aim a simple hit.
- You mean, the weather station? He hit me twice then!
- Oh, really? And me not even once.
Mei giggles, trying to not move her head. The grip of the web is still pretty uncomfortable.
- My powers suck, ya know - The demon huffs with a weak chuckle. - I don't really control it…
Mei blinks, widening her eyes. She wishes so badly to see his face right now.
- And shut up about your sword - Red Son says firmly. - You didn't have one when we first met. Your only weapon was eyes filled with the desire to kill me. Girl, I almost hesitated if I should've fought you. Me. The fire demon. Hesitated at the sight of the unarmed girl. I called myself "pathetic" back then, but you still terrify me.
Mei chuckles, smiling widely.
- And annoy me a lot - The demon adds, but it doesn't diminish the compliment.
- I was so mad - She says, reminding herself of the moment he just mentioned. - I thought Mk was dead.
- Mk, Mk, Mk! Everything is about him - Red Son blows a raspberry mockingly. - And where is he now, huh?
Mei twists her mouth. The debris in front of her also doesn't know the answer. A heavy sigh leaves her nose. She closes her eyes again. The sounds of fight, or whatever is happening right now, are quite distant. No one shows themselves for a long time.
- We're screwed - Her voice cracks from tiredness and helplessness. - They all left us alone…
She breathes calmly, listening to rumbles from far.
And then his fingers slightly move in her hand, holding it shyly. Mei blinks, looking down, but of course she can see nothing but the spider web. Her hand squeezes his carefully. Their fingers intertwine, a bit uncomfortably, because of the grip of the web, but it still gives them a little bit of relief. On the forlorn debris, far from anyone who could help, without any sign of what is happening…
At least they have each other.
