I Hate How She Talks About Snow White

"People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it's like, yeah, it is − because it needed that. It's an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond 'Someday My Prince Will Come. "

Let me tell you a little something's about that "85-year-old cartoon," miss Zegler.

It was the first-ever cel-animated feature-length full-color film. Ever. Ever. EVER. I'm worried that you're not hearing me. This movie was Disney inventing the modern animated film. Spirited Away, Into the Spider-Verse, Tangled, you don't get to have any of these without Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937.)

Speaking of what you wouldn't get without this movie, it includes anime as a genre. Not just in technique (because again, nobody animated more than shorts before this movie) but in style and story. Anime, as it is now, wouldn't exist without Osamu Tezuka, "The God of Manga," who wouldn't have pioneered anime storytelling in the 1940s without having watched and learned from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the 1930s. No "weeb" culture, no Princess Mononoke, no DragonBall Z, no My Hero Academia, no Demonslayer, and no Naruto without this "85-year-old cartoon."

It was praised, not just for its technical marvels, not just for its synchronized craft of sound and action, but primarily and enduringly because people felt like the characters were real. They felt more like they were watching something true to life than they did watching silent, live-action films with real actors and actresses. They couldn't believe that an animated character could make kids wet their pants as she flees, frightened, through the forest, or grown adults cry with grieving Dwarves. Consistently.

Walt Disney Studios was built on this movie. No no; you're not understanding me. Literally, the studio in Burbank, out of which has come legends of this craft of animated filmmaking, was literally built on the incredible, odds-defying, record-breaking profits of just Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, specifically.

Speaking of record-breaking profits, this movie is the highest-grossing animated film in history. Still. TO THIS DAY. And it was made during the Great Depression.

In fact, it made four times as much money than any other film, in any other genre, released during that time period. It was actually THE highest-grossing film of all time, in any genre, until nothing less than Gone With the Wind, herself, came along to take the throne.

It was the first-ever animated movie to be selected for the National Film Registry. Actually, it was one of the first movies, period, to ever go into the registry at all. You know what else is in the NFR? The original West Side Story, the remake of which is responsible for Rachel Ziegler's widespread fame.

Walt Disney sacrificed for this movie to be invented. Literally, he took out a mortgage on his house and screened the movie to banks for loans to finish paying for it, because everyone from the media to his own wife and brother told him he was crazy to make this movie. And you want to tell me it's just an 85-year-old cartoon that needs the most meaningless of updates, with your tender 8 years in the business?

Speaking of sacrifice, this movie employed over 750 people, and they worked immeasurable hours of overtime, and invented--literally invented--so many new techniques that are still used in filmmaking today, that Walt Disney, in a move that NO OTHER STUDIO IN HOLLYWOOD was doing in the 30's, put this in the opening credits: "My sincere appreciation to the members of my staff whose loyalty and creative endeavor made possible this production." Not the end credits, like movies love to do today as a virtue-signal. The opening credits.

It's legacy endures. Your little "85-year-old cartoon" sold more than 1 million DVD copies upon re-release. Just on its first day. The Beatles quoted Snow White in one of their songs. Legacy directors call it "the greatest film ever made." Everything from Rolling Stones to the American Film Institute call this move one of the most influential masterpieces of our culture. This movie doesn't need anything from anybody. This movie is a cultural juggernaut for America. It's a staple in the art of filmmaking--and art, in general. It is the foundation of the Walt Disney Company, of modern children's media in the West, and of modern adaptations of classical fairy tales in the West. When you think only in the base, low, mean terms of "race" and "progressivism" you start taking things that are actually worlds-away from being in your league to judge, and you relegate them to silly ignorant phrases like "85-year-old cartoon" to explain why what you're doing is somehow better.

Sit down and be humble. Who the heck are you?

Silver the Hedeghog, was he created by future Eggman? Secretly shadow son from the future!?

Notice black doom side head spikes, and top mini spikes on his head. plus he can levitate. (hint to psychic powers/telekinesis)

Silver has the same side long spikes but more bent down, and top head spikes but longer, and he can levitate due to psychic powers/telekinesis, prob what black doom also has for him to levitate. Also black doom eyes are mix of yellow/red... we got shadow with more red.. and silver with yellow.

This always stood out to me, plus the bracelets that look to be a future version of the inhibitor bracelets, and the markings on silver feet and hands.

I get sega don't like reference to dragonball Z, personally i don't see it. As silver looks to be created by either eggman nega, which backfired on him. or Present robotnik. who wanted to test time travel exploration. (but prob kept silver asleep) where he later woke up in future.. so many unknowns.

but the black doom hint, with features, linked with silver mix of shadow/black doom (grandfather!??)

Ushijima Wakatoshi: The Perfect Ace (Haikyuu Essay)

Haikyuu is brilliantly divided into three sections, the Miyagi matches, nationals, and a time skip where we see one of my favourite games and moments (which I shan't mention).

Three of the four seasons focus on the first section of the manga. One of the things this section does so well, is set up the perfect antagonist, the perfect end goal.

In Dragonball Z we have Frieza, in Demon Slayer we have Muzan, and in Attack on Titan we have… uhh I’m not really sure what we have… 

Anyway.

Haikyuu does things a little differently. While Oikawa was definitely a hurdle, and a large one at that. The end goal was always one team. Or rather, it was one player. The ace of the top team in the prefecture. A powerhouse, whose presence alone struck fear in the hearts of his opponents.

Of course. I’m talking about Ushijima Wakatoshi.

No. No. No no no. 

Ushijima is NOT boring. Jiren was boring. Not just boring. This guy literally put me to sleep.

But then again he also gave us one of the best moments in Super.

Unlike Jiren, Ushijima actually has a personality, but it’s actually his team’s philosophy that makes them, and by extension, Ushijima, such a great antagonist.

Volleyball is a battle.

It’s a simple philosophy, one built on power and height, and it sharply contrasts the qualities of our protagonists. 

Karasuno play with speed, creativity, and time differentials. But Shiratorizawa are different. They have a diamond.

Ushijima wields absolute power. And it’s because of this, that the entire Shiratorizawa team is built around him. He is the textbook definition of the perfect ace. He’s reliable. 

We’re introduced to Ushijima early on in the story, with the main cast in awe that he was able to make the U20’s National Team at such a young age. And as luck would have it, a certain two idiots run into him while out jogging.

This is the first time we see anyone interact with Ushijima, and we learn that… he’s kind of a prick. Except, that’s not quite true, is it?

The truth is, there’s no malice behind any of Ushijima’s insults. He’s quite literally just stating facts. Albeit, really, really, really bluntly.

He’s not very expressive, has very few flaws, and is rather stoic. But that’s what’s so perfect about him. Unlike Oikawa, who’s rather… well… you know?

Ushijima is the complete opposite. He’s simple.

Of course, there’s a lot more to Ushijima than just this. We learn a lot about his past through flashbacks of him with his father.

And as great as this moment is, it isn’t what makes him such an amazing antagonist. What makes him such a great end goal is the effect he has on our main cast.

This meeting here, the insults and the declaration of war that followed, are a massive reason for Hinata and Kageyama’s growth. It’s not out of personal animosity, but rather his honest opinion - an unyielding belief in the strength of his team.

This dismissiveness is what ignites the flame in Karasuno, driving them to prove their worth. Ushijima’s formidable power and stoic demeanour push Karasuno to their limits, forcing them to dig deeper, adapt, and evolve. They rise to his challenge, and through their trials, they grow. 

The opening for the season literally portrays Ushijima as a mountain, a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. I mean what more proof do you need?

And this is all without even getting into the final match. A game so good, that they dedicated an entire season to it.

Just think about what you see here. Hinata’s declaration of war, Nishinoya’s persistence, the third year’s giving it all for what could be their final ever game, and the greatest moment of the season… 

All of this, all of these moments are in response to pure, unadulterated strength.

These moments would not have been the same if it were not for the utterly perfect writing that went into crafting one of the most impressive characters in the whole show.

Ushijima is a force of nature. His sheer presence brings out the best in our protagonists. He’s strong, powerful, intelligent, athletic, and has seemingly limitless stamina.

He is exactly what this story needed and more.

Dragon Ball Z: Abridged Episode 17 Review

Zarbon’s not gay, and that’s pretty clever.

“A Lovely Bunch of Dragonballs” is an episode of Dragonball Z: Abridged that represents the greatest strengths of Team Four Star’s comedy. It is blindingly fast paced, with clever jokes coming one after the other each second, never giving the audience a break, and juggling three separate stories simultaneously without the episode ever feeling crowded, which not only is impressive on its own merit, but also shows the extent to which Team Four Star has refined their craft since the first season.

“Lovely Bunch” begins with a kind of cold open, which when I first saw it, legitimately caught me by surprise. Vegeta actually collecting all the Dragonballs and successfully wishing for immortality was absurd, and the reveal that it was all just a fever dream is a clever and funny twist that serves as a kind of irony, since it’s obvious to anyone watching that Vegeta’s quest for the Dragonballs couldn’t be anything but futile. And this dream is kept short, lasting for only thirty seconds before Zarbon comes to retrieve Vegeta and deliver him to the healing pods.

After Vegeta wakes up and begins the breakout, we go to Vegeta and Zarbon for a conversation that provides one of the funniest and most subversive twists of the show: that Zarbon is straight and has a girlfriend. The genius of this comes from Zarbon’s development to this point, as he has been portrayed as fitting perfectly into the stereotype of the “predatory gay,” as well as being incapable of speaking in anything but gay double entendre.

Yet here he stands, not only as a straight man with a girlfriend, but as a pretty decent boyfriend who cares enough to make early arrangements for their anniversary. He is the exact opposite of everything we and the characters have believed him to be, based solely on stereotypes surrounding his voice and manner of speech, and we are forced to reckon with Freeza that, to skip ahead to the second episode of DBZA Kai, “stereotypes are bullshit.” This is, I think, the sixth or seventh time I’ve watched this episode, and even now, I am still impressed with the depth and subtlety of Team Four Star’s subversion here.

And “Lovely Bunch” is only a third of the way over, continuing on from this brilliant moment to another brilliant sequence in which Vegeta gleefully sings as he steals the Dragonballs from Vegeta. Then we cut to Goku’s training, in which he geeks out at the possibility of fighting someone as destructive and powerful as Freeza, refusing to heed King Kai’s warning not to fight him.

The rest of the episode is spent of the three-way confrontation between Vegeta, Krillin, and Zarbon, and this sequence weaves together a thrice repeated joke about idiots flying around screaming, a jumpcut from one line to a related line elsewhere and then back to a related line where they started, and a reversal with Zarbon in which he accuses Vegeta of being too gay. It’s a lot of very ambitious comedy, and it all works wonderfully, coming together to form the best episode of Dragonball Z: Abridged I’ve reviewed yet.

Bulma: “Oh my God, he’s so hot. I just want to grab him and-“ Goku: “Sixty-nine. Seventy. Seventy-“ Vegeta: “One time you’ve defeated me.”

Vegeta: “I’m about to blow my load all over your insides. No homo.”

To the anon who asked, yes, when I first saw Dragonball Z: Abridged, I had never seen a full episode of the original show, and to this day, the most I have seen is up to around the 30th episode of DBZ Kai.

The Wrong Kind of Weird, by James Ramos, is a fun new YA romcom. When the story opens, nerdy high-schooler Cameron is secretly dating the cheerleader prom queen girl, who's also in an off-again-on-again situation with her popular-crowd boyfriend. At the same time, Cameron's starting to spend more time with a nerdy artist girl, who might become more than a friend... This was a sweet YA story, with fun, believable secondary characters. I really liked that both love interests actually had their own hobbies and interests! The Wrong Kind of Weird is a hard one to review, because there was a lot to enjoy in a book that riffs on both Dragonball Z and Pride and Prejudice, but I found a lot of Cameron's personal story slightly flat. Cameron -- and his nerdy friends -- are unpleasantly obsessed with the idea that hobbies are the same thing as personality, so he uses his geek hobbies almost as a shield, dividing himself and his friends from others. Cameron's not quite posting on incel Reddit, but it doesn't make for a particularly likable protag. As nerd hobbies become mainstream, accessible interests, it's more awkward to hide behind a niche interest. Can you *really* be a comic book outsider with popular, big-budget Marvel movies coming out left and right? This makes the book's overall just-be-yourself message feel even more heavy-handed. Fortunately, every single secondary character from the girl crafting weekends to win a cosplay contest, to an older sister explaining the hand-flex in P&P, to a divorced dad asking his son awkward music questions to relate, felt like a real person. Overall, not a perfect book but definitely an author to watch.
