Currently writing the latest chapter of my upcoming fic, "Reassembly", where Hargon is reincarnated as the son of Malroth and the Builder. This scene is too hilarious NOT to share.
Since I’m currently unemployed maybe i’ll actually be able to do more monster art this october than the past couple years
Behold, the Raving Lunatick! In older games it was called an Eyeder, and was placed in the Bug family in the monsters games. I bring this up because it’s funny how it went through two different bug-based pun names despite having nothing in common with either a tick or a spider, or any insect whatsoever for that matter. It sure can cast spells at you, though!
The first Dragon Quest was initially released to the Famicom in 1986. This Japanese RPG was originally localized in America as Dragon Warrior when it was finally officially translated in 1989 has NES game.
Has I have said before this is one of the few Dragon Quest Game that I have completed. I am going to be playing the Dragon Warrior I & II version, released to the Game Boy Color in 2000.
So now a little about what I remember of this game before I replay. I remember it being simultaneously a very simple and confusing game. Most of the time I had no idea where I had to go and had to look up maps of the world and dungeons so that I could advance without getting bored. The story was pretty simple, but there were some sprinkles of world building sprinkled around. I remember the part that brought me the most joy for some reason was carrying the princess bridal style once I find her.
playing every game in my steam library in alphabetical order until i finish them all challenge: dragon quest 1
overall rating: 7/10
*played on an emulator so no achievements or time given
WOW I had fun with this game. it's so simple and sometimes insanely frustrating due to its limitations- not being able to save except at the castle, no such thing as fast travel- but I felt great being able to finally beat it.
gotta say, the dragon lord really gave me a run for my money at the end. I think I was underleved, even while following a guide. I did end up using save states just for peace of mind, or this game would have driven me insane I think. I played what I think is the mobile remake of the game? with an interesting translation.
it's cool to see where this series originated as well as the influence from toriyama's art direction. I know almost nothing about the dragon quest games and I intend to play through all of them, maybe one every time I've beaten 3-5 steam games.
this game has its flaws of course, especially looking at it from a modern lens. but it's a great game regardless and easy to get through. I'm excited to see how the series develops with each title!
do you guys ever think about how Wyll is introduced as an archetypal fantasy hero, but then it turns out he’s a warlock, who made a pact with a devil. Do you ever think about how Ansur is described as this fantastical dragon of myth, but then when you find him, he’s turned into an undead monstrosity. Do you think about how when Wyll does the right thing, he is punished to become more monstrous. Do you think about how as Wyll’s warlock powers grow, his spells get more horrific. Do you think about how Ansur was killed by his closest friend. Do think about how Wyll was cast out by the most important person in his life. do you guys ever think about Ansur and Wyll.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D is in development for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam, Microsoft Store). A release date was not announced.
