"Both of you, faithless fools who would dare to take up arms against the king of earth and sky!"
The words "Zonai Ganondorf" entered my head and I haven't been sane since. Perhaps in the Zonai version of the legend, the warlord "Gannon" sought after the secret stones, and the incarnation of Hylia draconified herself to stop him alongside the Ancient Hero.

yeah overthinking prophecies is the mind killer but i have to say my piece re azor ahai, that is, if it's really meant to be one character, then the best narrative choice is dany. not only because she fulfills every word of the prophecy an entire book before we even learn of its existence. but also "no one ever looked for a girl," aemon tells us. in-universe her gender precludes her from being imagined as the saviour figure and on a meta level even the readers don't think the 16 year old girl with this much power (dragons) will be allowed to keep that power and fulfill an important narrative destiny as a hero of the story. the expectation is that the character will be brought low and/or surpassed by the classic warrior hero archetype of jon. which is why i think dany being AA is the most subversive choice. and would actually make jon the red herring.

Awakening is such a funny game in retrospect. baseline expectations for DA status quo is DA2 team being all concerned about possession and blood magic, and half of the Inquisition crew being suuuper concerned about Cole, and many people being outwardly antagonistic to him based on his spirit-in-a-boy's-body nature.
meanwhile back in Awakening the Warden goes: oh worm? you want to come fight darkspawn with me? sure, the more the merrier! and then the whole gang is just workshopping how to deal with Justice's dead body decaying, Oghren wants to know if Justice fucks, and Nathaniel is all: what if you [spins wheel] possessed someone who was alive? if both parties consent i think that's basically like fine.

The missing Arthurian knight - rediscovered in 2019
Well the title is a slight lie - the missing knight wasn't rediscovered in 2019, it was earlier than that, but he didn't became public until 2019.
Tumblr media
So what's this "missing knight" about? Well as the title says. There was a knight part of the Arthurian myth, and he had been missing ever since the Middle-Ages, and he was only recently rediscovered.
Or rather, to be exact - there was an Arthurian novel centered around a knight that existed and was a famous and well-known part of the Arthurian literature in the Middle-Ages, but that completely disappeared, and was forgotten by culture (as much popular culture as the scholarly one). Until very recently.
This rediscovered novel has been a hot topic of all Arthuriana fans in Europe for a few years now - and yet I do not see much talk about this onto this website, despite Tumblr being a big place for Arthurian fans?
So I will correct this by doing a series of posts about the subject. And this post will be the first one, the introduction post presenting to you "Ségurant, le chevalier au dragon" ; "Segurant, the knight of the dragon". A French medieval novel part of the Arthurian literature (hence the "chevalier au X" title structure - like Lancelot, the knight of the cart or Yvain the knight of the lion from Chrétien de Troyes), the reason this story was forgotten by all medievalist and literary scholars is - long story short - because it never existed in any full manuscript (at least none that survived to this day). It was a complete story yes, with even variations apparently, but that was cut into pieces and fragments inserted into various other manuscripts and texts (most notably various "Merlin's Prophecies").
The novel and the Knight of the Dragon were rediscovered through the work of Emanuele Arioli, who rediscovered a fragment of the story while looking at an old manuscript of a Merlin Prophecies, and then went on the hunt for the other fragments and pieces scattered around Europe, until he finally could compile the full story, that he then published in 2019, at the Belles Lettres publishing house, in 2019.
Arioli reconstructed the text, and translated it in both modern French and Italian for scholarly and professional editions (aka Honoré Champion in France, a reference for universities)...
Tumblr media
... But also for a more "all public, found in all libraries" edition - the famous 2019 edition at Les Belles Lettres.
Tumblr media
And not only that, but he also participated to both a comic book adaptation with Emiliano Tanzillo...
Tumblr media
... and an adaptation as an illustrated children novel!
Tumblr media
Finally, just a few weeks, the Franco-German channel Arte released a documentary about the reconstitution and content of this missing novel called "Le Chevalier au dragon: Le roman disparu de la Table Ronde". (The Knight of the Dragon - The missing novel of the Round Table). The full documentary is on Youtube in French for those that speak the language, here. And in German here for those who speak German.
Unfortunately there is no English version of the documentary that I know of, nor any English publications of the actual text - just French and Italian. But hey, I'll try to palliate to that by doing some English-speaking posts about this whole business!

Azimer the lich is quite insane and still believes he is the living headmaster of Myth Drannor's School of Wizardry (Looks like a Roger Raupp illustration, for Ed Greenwood's Gen Con XVII AD&D tournament adventure "Into the Forgotten Realms" in Dragon 95, March 1985)

The Colchian Dragon 🐉🔮🏆
January's subject theme was "dragon" to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year 🧡 We meet this dragon during Jason and the Argonaut's quest to steal the Golden Fleece from King Aeëtes of Colchis. The fleece hung on the branches of an oak tree, and was guarded by a fearsome dragon. According to myth, Jason was helped by the king's sorceress daughter, Medea, who put the dragon to sleep with a special potion allowing them to access the hanging treasure. In one version of events depicted on this redfigure (courtest of Theoi.com), Jason was first swallowed and disgorged by the dragon, which is being shown here. Thank you to my patrons for choosing the subject in last month's poll! Patrons in January will be receiving digital downloads, wallpapers, and a print and sticker of this illustration 🧡 patreon.com/flaroh

Love a monster book. This is Monsters of Myth & Legend (1984) for Mayfair’s Role Aids line of D&D sourcebooks. As the title tells you, this is a collection of monsters drawn from mythology. Four groupings of them are tied to specific cultures: Norse, Irish, Greek, Chinese. Two other draw broadly from the myths of people living in large regions but which belong to many distinct cultures: native American and Aboriginal Australians.
The mix is pretty solid. I particularly appreciate the monsters from Australia, which are often overlooked in this sort of thing — and even here, I can think of a couple more I would have liked to have seen, like the Pangkarlangu (neolithic cannibals), though it is nice to get attributes for Malingee (shadow spirits with burning eyes) and Murgah Muggulu (a kind of dream spider). Weird that there are still some deep cuts from Greece — maenads, mares of Thrace, even Scylla — who don’t have D&D attributes. The China chapter is probably the most robust, providing a variety of spirits and monsters that have multiple potential applications in the game. China also has a giant with no head, which is maybe the most delightful monster in the whole book.
This is maybe one of my favorite Boris Vallejo paintings that were recycled for Role Aids covers. It downplays physique and features a rad monster, both of which seem unusual for Boris. Its more atmospheric, too, a bit more in line with Frazetta, honestly. The interiors are by Teanna Byerts and Robin Wood. I don’t dislike them, but they do seem diminished by tight deadlines, if I had to guess.

NEW OC JUST DROPPED!! I had so much fun with him, made in the midst of reading the Iliad (the Trojans, the 'oathbreakers'??? wink wink nudge nudge!!) and Mythic Odysseys of Theros.
:3 Check out his write up, it's one of my favourite backstories so far haha he died a war hero (i wonder who) and upon his death his soul was sent to the afterlife. He refused to cross over at which point he broke out (and assumed anyone can bc he's just that heroic) but as punishment the boatman stole his memories so he has to start at level 1 (reborn race) and has his obols still stuck to his eyes lol. He's like a figment/fraction of his past self lol He also uses flying boots as a mobility aid!
