Thinking about trios and mirrors and all that (you know, each generation having their own trio and all)

And I was thinking about Severus' school's trio. Obviously it can't be the marauders, there were 4.

And then I thought:

What if Remus was Severus and Lily's friend first?

What if the reason Severus hates Remus isn't just because he was there when the Marauders bullied Severus or because he nearly killed him as a werewolf, but because Remus betrayed him?

According to Remus, Lily was his friend (at least in the movies). She was there for me at a time no one else was. Why her? Why not the Mauraders? Why were Lily's eyes more recognisable than James' face?

Because he was friends with Lily first.

He, Lily, and Severus. The weird outcasts. One of them was muggleborn. One a werewolf. One so poor he was poorer than poor. A trio.

But then what happened?

James and Sirius.

Somehow, something happened, and Remus betrayed Severus and joined the Marauders. Because Remus at heart is a coward and took the coward's way out: joining the bullies before they could bully him.

And Severus never forgave him for that. For betraying him for the Mauraders. For telling them his secret and not Severus, who'd been his friend first. For being involved in such a dangerous, murderous trick.
