Just a quick update on me.

I'm back from this year's Drachenfest in Diemelstadt. Second biggest larp event in the world.

It was amazing as always. A lot of love and amazing encounters.

Also my character started collecting stamps. Hugged an extremely furious 10000+ year old drow and was blessed by a nephelim.

I cried, laughed, hugged and played.

We invented a new sport, created a motto for the circle and cast big magical rituals.

The green camp is my happy place. I love my people there. And of course the ones from other camps as well.

We are family. Many leaves, one tree.

I already have so many ideas for next year. And can't wait to see everyone again.

This time in the first year of eternal change since the beginning. I'm sooo happy for them. They deserved it for sooo long.

That last one is canonically how it goes in the larp Drachenfest. Which means you can get back up very quickly with magic healing, but if the wound wasn't cleaned well you have an excuse to give the other healers good play an hour later.

I once came into the healers tent with my entire shoulder joint fused together because that is what (I decided) the magic potion decided to do about me getting hit with a huge maul on my shield shoulder. It still held my shield up the rest of that fight, but definitely not good in the long run!

What are some chronic illnesses that can only occur in a fantasy setting?

Post I just saw reminded me of the best part of DrachenFest this year for me.

I was part of a ballista crew for the Final Battle, the largest battle of the entire event where some 3000 or so people end up in a 10 (or more, potentially) way battle. I'm with Grey camp, who quite simply have the worst army on the field in terms of equipment, people actually showing up for battles, and winning field battles during the rest of the event.

Now this all happened about an hour in. By then our infantry support had ran away from us, we had found other Grey infantry to support, briefed them while they were fighting on when and how to open up their lines, and then given them significant fire support until the entire unit retreated... in the direction we were originally trying to break through towards (the entire formation apparently having rotated while we were all busy fighting).

Now we were standing behind a Green battle line (the Grey army is licking its wounds further back) that is waiting 30 meters from a battle, and we want to prepare them for doing fire support through their line if they get involved in this battle.

So we are talking to the soldiers, and their lieutenant shows up and tells us "we just cannot do that, we can't open up the line during battle, it'll break". And some of his guys nod, and then I tell him:

"We did this with the Grey army half an hour ago. If they can do it, so can you"

And I just turn around and start coordinating with the other siege crew and the guy leaves as my platoon commander says "Ouch, harsh. Fair, but harsh."

I just absolutely loved that.

Also fire support through their line went well, once we physically pulled their men to the side. And our opponents were wonderful when getting hit.

I do larp as well, but most things the medics show up for at my larp end up being overheating/being in the sun too much and drinking too little.

That said the medics apparently really like being posted at this larp rather than a music festival because most of us are there to fight safely, which requires not taking weird party drugs or getting piss drunk, and because we want help when we need it the medics always get an instant super wide path when they need to pass through

You know you've fucked up when you go to a doctor and the thing you have wrong with you has been named after an occupation that isn't a thing anymore. Like imagine a doctor looking at you and going "yeah you've got ox-drawn ploughman's disease. We don't even test for that anymore. Yeah the reason you've never heard of it is because the last known case was in 1927 and happened to some guy who was like 98 years old and didn't believe in modern medicine of the time. What the fuck have you been up to."

I will never understand larps that need to hire “influencers.” And at this point I actively avoid those games.

Nothing against influencers. I just prefer my in game content in game and not everyone projecting their made up relationships on a TikTok star. Or games creating add ons to guarantee an interaction. (Gross much?)

It was really managable! The organizers limited car access to some of the fields on Sunday and Monday to protect the roads from getting completely churned up. so there were a few queues forming during check-in. But ultimately the mud situation was super managable compared to last year.

LARP shield diy

I went to my first big LARP last summer, namely Drachenfest. While I had gone to a few tavern evenings, I had never really played a full consistent character, so it was a pretty big thing for me.

Beforehand, I prepared a number of things and also tried my hand at building weapons and a shield for the first time.

This was the result.

Below are a few pictures of the process.

I used a hard foam sheet as a core and bolted a piece of a wooden rod to the back as a handle. I used a hollowed out half of a softball as a boss. It was attached to a Plastazote mat. To secure the screws and edges of the core, I used a fibreglass fabric that was soaked in latex. I used a contact glue called Kövulfix, which is intended for use on leather. It deals well with the porous foam and has excellent properties if you want to sand edges for example.

I designed a pattern on paper and after adding the Plastazote to the other side, I mapped out the pattern to make adjustments.

Because I am not particularly good at drawing, I transferred a real wood texture to the surface in order to instead carve the texture into the foam.

I mainly just added the most prominent features of the pattern and freestyles the rest. I used wood carving tools and my trusted Dremel for this. 😊

After that, I added the rest of the embellishments. Which was a pain. (Although I am currently working on a shield that will have almost 150 individual foam rivets on it, so I guess it’s all relative. 😅)

I used different coloured primer for the wood and metal parts. As you can see I take masking off very seriously. I decided flex paints to avoid latex deterioration, which can be a big problem in LARP.

Because I carved the texture into the foam, I was able to paint the wood mostly by dry brushing, and only adding a few details with the brush.

I have to admit I am really pleased with the result, especially for my first time (although I am aware of a number of aesthetic flaws). 😁
