Kaz had tried. He really had. He'd made a promise to himself to stop hiding behind his armour like a scared little child. The gloves were a tool, a part of the Bastard of the Barrel's myth, but, above all, they were there to hide his weakness. So he had. Kind of. He'd stopped wearing them around the Slat altogether, and had even gone to the Crow Club without them on a number of occasions. It had been going so well that he'd even been bold enough to write to Inej about it in a letter. The next time you come around, I won't be wearing them.

The prospect of not having to wear his gloves was exciting. Not only because it meant he'd meet Inej as a better version of himself the next time he saw her, but also because he would've gotten rid of the one weakness Dirtyhands had.

He allowed himself to hope.

Then he drowned in the middle of the Crow Club.

It had been one of the busier days, and Kaz had decided not to wear them that day. He'd done it so many times before, what could go wrong? He'd been on the floor, strolling between the tables to see if he could catch anyone cheating or counting cards. Someone bumped into him, knocked him over and to the ground. Within a few seconds, several hands reached out to help him, grabbing his bare hands and lifting him up.

The water rose, suffocating him. Hands grabbed him, trying to pull him deeper and deeper. Bodies surrounded him and his stomach turned. It was Jesper that got him out and back to the Slat. They didn't talk about it. And Kaz wasn't too sure he could've, even if he'd wanted to.

That was the last time Dirtyhands had gone to the Crow Club without his gloves.

It took him ages to salvage his reputation, to turn the incident into something useful. He still kept them off in the Slat, but it didn't feel right. Months passed without a word from the Wraith, and safety and comfort became more important than the promise he'd made.

Then, tonight, she showed up in his window. "You're wearing them in your office?" She tried to hide it, but Kaz could hear the disappointment in her voice. It cut deep. Deeper than he would've liked. And it made him feel ashamed. Ashamed and weak.

Staring down at his gloved hands to avoid her gaze, he balled them into fists. "I don't think I can do it." I'm sorry. He hadn't heard her move, but she must have, because suddenly she grabbed his hand and unfurled his fingers. His heart pounded painfully in his chest, but he didn't pull away. Not even when she peeled his gloves off one finger at a time, until his armour was once again gone. He owed her that much. Still, he didn't meet her eyes. Not until she lifted his hand and pressed a kiss to the palm of his hand. Featherlight, but it was enough.

His heart kept hammering away in his chest, but the water didn't rise.

your f/o seems to be everywhere you are, as if they know exactly where youre going. you didnt think much of it at first but now that a few weeks have gone by, youre a bit nervous seeing them from nowhere. its becoming clear that theyre probably stalking you but for some reason you arent completely disgusted or freaked out. you kinda wanna see how far they go.

they leave dead animals on your doorstep, notes on your door and windows, and have set up cameras that you definitely noticed but havent pointed out. you just wanna see how far it goes, its not like theyll go that far, right?

theyve gotten into your home multiple times, they take photos of you when you sleep. your peaceful state driving them to do whatever they want. they dont even worry about waking you, they know youre not going to do anything. they have you wrapped around their finger and you know it, you just deny it.

the breaking and entering becomes almost a nightly thing at this point, you notice a few love letters they left out and read them just like every morning. its the same old thing, how theyd kill for you, theyd gut themselves to be yours, theyd rip your eyes out and keep them in a jar full of your beautiful tears, etc. you think its lovely so you keep the notes in a box for later.

maybe youre just as crazy for them as they are for you, they have their eye on you and know everything about you so theyd totally know if the feeling was mutual. you suppose the reason they havent said anything yet is because they enjoy this little game they have with you. they love writing you notes, watching you on the cameras, and leaving you insane gifts on your steps. maybe theyll wrap it up when they run out of the light rosey pink paper and red ink they love writing to you with so much. maybe theyll just invest in more. or maybe youll turn the tables and stalk them too.
