Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961)
Tumblr media
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea has a certain nostalgic quality. You can tell this science fiction story comes from simpler times, that despite its serious plot and high stakes, the objective was to have fun. With solid special effects and a surprisingly sophisticated plot, it’s hard not to fall under its undersea charms.
A meteor shower is causing the global temperature to rise and leading to worldwide cataclysms. Though the UN’s chief scientist believes the problem will resolve itself, Scientific and engineering genius Admiral Harriman Nelson (Walter Pidgeon) isn't convinced. With his state-of-the-art nuclear submarine, he sets a course for the Mariana Islands: the one spot on Earth from which the Seaview's missiles can destroy the asteroids encircling the planet and save the world.
If you take a magnifying glass to the film, the science leans towards the dodgy side and there are several questionable actions from multiple people. The Seaview is the roomiest submarine I’ve ever seen. The interior is so relaxed people are even allowed to smoke - though to the film’s credit, this becomes a plot point later on. Then there’s the question of the global warming in effect. Professor Emilio Zucco (Henry Daniell) says the fire encircling our planet will burn itself out when it reaches 173 degrees. By my count, we’d all be cooked dead by then. Even the movie seems to acknowledge this, as there are many radio reports of polar ice caps melting, bodies of water drying up, entire regions of Europe becoming uninhabitable and Africa’s flora burning up. You might wonder if there will even be a planet to save by the time the Seaview arrives at its destination… but those are details far eclipsed by what the film does right.
While Harriman Nelson disregards the UN’s votes and even the President’s orders, the point is that he’s right. Our world is doomed (not through any fault of our own, mind you) unless the brave men (and women) on the high-tech submarine can make the harrowing journey to the Mariana Islands. Along the way, there are many dangers - outside and inside the submarine. Giant octopuses, land mines and government interference are just the beginning of their troubles. Not everyone aboard the Seaview believes Nelson is correct. Some think his plan will actually make things worse. Others believe this is the end of the world, that they should be allowed to go see their families one last time before it’s too late. Tensions escalate when Harriman clashes with his second-in-command, Captain Lee Crane (Robert Sterling). It all works because the characters are well-written. Even when someone becomes an antagonist or you don’t agree with their actions, you understand why they’re doing them. It might be stress, faith in someone other than their overconfident Admiral, or some saboteur’s plan leading them astray. These all keep the plot racing and the audience wondering what’s next.
Though this film is ultimately about its plot, not the characters, they’re given enough dimension for you to care about them. There are many, but the ensemble creates a nice balance of different views, and everyone serves a purpose at one point or another. Look forward to Joan Fontaine as psychologist Dr. Susan Hiller, Nelson’s on-board friend and fellow scientist, Commodore Lucius Emery (Peter Lorre), the Admiral’s secretary, Lieutenant Cathy Connors (Barbara Eden), one of the cataclysm’s first victims rescued by the Seaview, Miguel Alvarez (Michael Ansara), and more.
As for the special effects, they obviously don’t compare to what we can do with computers today, but the illusions are all fine. Some might even make you wonder how they managed them way back in the 60s. Considering they perfectly convey the information director Irwin Allen wanted them to. I’d say they hold up well.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea maintains steady tension throughout. Some of it might’ve been scientifically disproven since its release but it doesn’t matter too much because the ideas are there. It’s exactly the kind of movie you’d watch as a kid and would never get tired of, then revisit years later and be relieved to see holds up. Even if you’re watching it for the first time, it has a quaint charm that makes you feel nostalgic. (On Blu-ray, September 8, 2021)

Historical Mysteries: a reading list
Mycroft Holmes by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Anna Waterhouse
Fresh out of Cambridge University, the young Mycroft Holmes is already making a name for himself in government, working for the Secretary of State for War. Yet this most British of civil servants has strong ties to the faraway island of Trinidad, the birthplace of his best friend, Cyrus Douglas, a man of African descent, and where his fiancée Georgiana Sutton was raised. Mycroft’s comfortable existence is overturned when Douglas receives troubling reports from home. There are rumors of mysterious disappearances, strange footprints in the sand, and spirits enticing children to their deaths, their bodies found drained of blood. Upon hearing the news, Georgiana abruptly departs for Trinidad. Near panic, Mycroft convinces Douglas that they should follow her, drawing the two men into a web of dark secrets that grows more treacherous with each step they take... Written by NBA superstar Kareem Abdul- Jabbar and screenwriter Anna Waterhouse, Mycroft Holmes reveals the untold story of Sherlock’s older brother. This harrowing adventure changed his life, and set the stage for the man Mycroft would become: founder of the famous Diogenes Club and the hidden power behind the British government.
The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye
The new and exciting historial thriller by Lyndsay Faye, author of Edgar-nominated Jane Steele and Gods of Gotham, which follows Alice “Nobody” from Prohibition-era Harlem to Portland’s the Paragon Hotel. The year is 1921, and “Nobody” Alice James is on a cross-country train, carrying a bullet wound and fleeing for her life following an illicit drug and liquor deal gone horribly wrong. Desperate to get as far away as possible from New York City and those who want her dead, she has her sights set on Oregon: a distant frontier that seems the end of the line. She befriends Max, a black Pullman porter who reminds her achingly of Harlem, who leads Alice to the Paragon Hotel upon arrival in Portland. Her unlikely sanctuary turns out to be the only all-black hotel in the city, and its lodgers seem unduly terrified of a white woman on the premises. But as she meets the churlish Dr. Pendleton, the stately Mavereen, and the unforgettable club chanteuse Blossom Fontaine, she begins to understand the reason for their dread. The Ku Klux Klan has arrived in Portland in fearful numbers–burning crosses, inciting violence, electing officials, and brutalizing blacks. And only Alice, along with her new “family” of Paragon residents, are willing to search for a missing mulatto child who has mysteriously vanished into the Oregon woods. Why was “Nobody” Alice James forced to escape Harlem? Why do the Paragon’s denizens live in fear–and what other sins are they hiding? Where did the orphaned child who went missing from the hotel, Davy Lee, come from in the first place? And, perhaps most important, why does Blossom DuBois seem to be at the very center of this tangled web?
The Yard by Alex Grecian
Victorian London is a cesspool of crime, and Scotland Yard has only twelve detectives—known as “The Murder Squad”—to investigate countless murders every month. Created after the Metropolitan Police’s spectacular failure to capture Jack the Ripper, The Murder Squad suffers rampant public contempt. They have failed their citizens. But no one can anticipate the brutal murder of one of their own . . . one of the twelve . . .When Walter Day, the squad’s newest hire, is assigned the case of the murdered detective, he finds a strange ally in the Yard’s first forensic pathologist, Dr. Bernard Kingsley. Together they track the killer, who clearly is not finished with The Murder Squad . . . but why? Filled with fascinating period detail, and real historical figures, this spectacular debut in a new series showcases the depravity of late Victorian London, the advent of criminology, and introduces a stunning new cast of characters sure to appeal to fans of The Sherlockian and The Alienist.
The Darling Dahlias and the Cucumber Tree by Susan Wittig Albert
The good old ladies of Darling, Alabama, are determined to keep their town beautiful. The Darling Dahlias garden club is off to a good start until rumors of trouble at a bank, an escaped convict, and a ghost digging around their tree surface. If anyone can get to the root of these mysteries, it's the Darling Dahlias.

2016 Golden Elliott Awards
Damn, y’all. It’s taken long enough.
My apologies for taking so much longer than usual to post these (I mean, last year these were up the Monday after the Oscars, and this year...does anyone even remember who won? Other than that miraculous Best Picture fiasco?). It was my first awards season out of school, and that proved to be a new, exciting challenge. That said, 2016 was a pretty fun year for my personal awards. Not only could I barely decide on a solid ranking of all of the films throughout the year, but I also found myself with the strange issue of liking many, many films, but truly loving few. All that aside, however, I believe these awards to represent my viewing experiences of 2016 very well.
Of course, there are always films I don’t get around to, even if this year the list stings a bit more than usual. I expect many of these to make quite a dent in my ballot once I get around to them, but I waited long enough to post this. A mostly complete list of those I didn’t get to are:
Aquarius
The Fits
I Am Not Your Negro
Lemonade
My Life as a Zucchini
Nocturnal Animals
O.J.: Made in America
The Salesman
13th
Toni Erdmann
20th Century Women
But let’s not detract too much from the 34 films from 2016 that I did see! I didn’t have the time/energy to go through and make pretty graphics for all of the categories like last year--just the top ten films. Again, my bad.
So! Without any further procrastination!
2016 GOLDEN ELLIOTT AWARDS
Tumblr media
TOP TEN FILMS:
01. Moonlight / dir. Barry Jenkins / USA The one film of the year that won my heart. Jenkins’ visual symphony on a young man’s life is an ingenious deconstruction of masculinity and a much overdue spotlight on a narrative that all too often falls outside of the visibility of the mainstream. With as many excellent films 2016 gave us, there was no contest for the best.
02. The Handmaiden / dir. Park Chan-wook / South Korea Park Chan-wook’s labyrinthine Handmaiden may be the closest anyone has come to Hitchcock’s level of intrigue in decades. With sumptuous production values (seriously, there’s no more beautiful movie from this year), a tightly-wound suspenseful plot, a remarkable cast, and a genuinely moving romance, The Handmaiden is one of the most impressive cinematic achievements in years.
03. Silence / dir. Martin Scorsese / USA A longtime passion project for Scorsese, Silence is as harrowing a look at faith as possible. Wisely sidestepping anything resembling a white savior trope, the audience ventures deep into 17th century Japan and into the crumbling psyche of a man desperately clinging onto his relationship with God. It’s difficult, stunning, deeply rewarding work.
04. Arrival / dir. Denis Villeneuve / USA That Arrival, a film about aliens and a linguistics professor, manages to feel like it reaffirms the bond that connects all of us is a testament to the vision of director Villeneuve and writer behind the source material Ted Chiang. As the film comes to a close, the mind spins, and the heart soars.
05. I, Daniel Blake / dir. Ken Loach / UK Between Brexit and the already infamous presidential election, 2016 was mired with a heavy political cloud for much of the western world. Loach’s I, Daniel Blake, which won last year’s Palme d’Or at Cannes, was the angriest cinematic voice in the rabble of 2016 politics, making an impassioned case for the downtrodden man and making an unforgiving condemnation of the government. Brutally powerful stuff.
06. Love & Friendship / dir. Whit Stillman / Ireland/France/Netherlands Love & Friendship isn’t just the funniest Jane Austen has ever been onscreen, it is also the funniest film of 2016 by a wide margin. With a gleefully snide central performance from Kate Beckinsale and a cast of wonderful character actors, this film sets a new bar for how enjoyable a sitting room period piece can be.
07. Julieta / dir. Pedro Almodóvar / Spain With the great director’s brand of theatricality and a staggering leading performance from Emma Suárez, Julieta is an ocean-soaked, color-bursting melodrama and is also one of the year’s more underseen gems. That’s a shame, because Julieta is primed to join the director’s greatest works in the pantheon of Spanish cinema.
08. Manchester by the Sea / dir. Kenneth Lonergan / USA Lonergan’s latest is the slightest bit of a mixed bag. While certain parts feel overcooked and a bit false, most of the film lives in an extraordinarily painful emotional state, but one that feels devastatingly honest. The beautiful New England scenery acts as the backdrop for this painfully sad, but rewardingly affective film.
09. Hell or High Water / dir. David Mackenzie / USA About twenty minutes into Hell or High Water, the thought occurs to me that most of these characters probably voted for Trump. That’s not a slight against them, however much I may hypothetically disagree with these fictional characters--if anything, it makes the film an extraordinarily powerful portrait of Americans in the middle of the country who feel like the government has abandoned them. Now, several months in, it feels like this new administration is poised to do the same. This is a thrilling neo-western with a clear political mindset that feels like a future American classic.
10. The Red Turtle / dir. Michaël Dudok de Wit / France/Belgium/Japan With not a single line of dialogue over its 80 minute runtime, The Red Turtle is a powerful fable of human resilience and our relationship with nature. Gorgeous animation and a powerful score, and an Adam and Eve story to match the best of them makes The Red Turtle the finest animated films in a very, very good year.

Closing the gap on health disparities
For more than 10 years, Susan Magasi has been building a significant body of research documenting and exploring health care disparities for people with disabilities.
“I am an occupational therapist by training,” said Magasi, assistant professor of occupational therapy in the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences. “As a practicing clinician, I was always intrigued by understanding what happens next for my clients who, by accident or by birth, struggled in environments that were not always welcoming to their differences and disabilities.”
Magasi wants to eliminate the gap between people who have access to quality care and people who do not.
“In an ideal world, there would be no need for my field of research, because everyone would have access to quality care,” Magasi said.
Until then, Magasi is committed to bringing attention to the pressing issues of health care access, quality and outcomes for men and women with disabilities through community-engaged participatory research. This type of research, she said, helps ensure clinical partners align with disability community members on the important issues and interventions that are practical and sustainable in the real world.
Since joining UIC in 2013, Magasi has been the principal investigator on five federal and foundation research grants from organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. This work has focused on activating strengths within the disability community to encourage peer support and facilitate information sharing. The goal, Magasi said, is to help people breakdown common barriers to care.
Last fall, Magasi put research into action by launching ScreenABLE Saturday, a community health event in partnership with the Chicago Cancer Health Equality Collaboration to promote and provide accessible screening mammograms to disabled women.
“For many of the women who attended, it was the first time they had had a mammogram,” Magasi said.
“This was an exciting project because allowed us to take what we know from research and translate that into direct community impact.”
Yolanda Suarez-Balcazar, professor and head of occupational therapy, nominated Magasi for the Rising Star Researcher Award.
“Dr. Magasi has quickly distinguished herself as a rising star and exemplary model of engage-scholar,” Suarez-Balcazar said. “Her work has had a tremendous impact on the lives of individuals with disabilities.”
“I am delighted and humbled to know that UIC values this kind community-based research. For me, it validates the benefit of working with an institution like UIC that honors social justice and collaboration with underserved and underrepresented communities,” Magasi said.
