So, as it turns out, I can't actually find a good link for Sloth. He's definitely in Advert Attack, Neverending Boss Battle, and The Return of the Return of Dr. Sloth, but best I can tell, everyone else in those games is just some nameless nerd.

(There also seem to be some placeholder Gormball and Battledome assets, and if he was in those I'd count either, but no dice.)

Since I'm not counting Better Than You for this blog's purposes (more about that here), he's a dead end. In hindsight, given his general lack of explicit presence in non-plot non-Virtupets capacities, I guess I shouldn't be that surprised, but I dunno, even one game alongside the Space Faerie would do it.

That's what I get for just going off a hunch, I guess.

Neopets/Skyrim Tarot: XV. The Devil

The Devil! This is one of my favorite cards in the deck and is actually my proper birth card, paired with the Lovers. The Devil card is typically associated with binding, addiction, restriction, and sexuality. (Never forget that the tarot is Catholic and originates from Italy, it explains a lot about it.) As for our two lovely devils...

Dr. Frank Sloth, whose real name may be Francis Q. Slothberg Esq. (and may live at 3333 Friendly Lane in Happyville, Caliwyolaskington), is arguably the biggest villain in all of Neopia - and beyond. He invented the Virtupets Space Station, enslaved the Grundos, mutated Neopets left right and center, has constantly tried to take over Neopia, is the rival of Mira the Space Faerie, moonlights as the Happiness Faerie, and has a PhD in horribleness from an unknown college. According to The Neopedia, Dr. Sloth came to Neopia long before the existence of Neopets (stated by the article to be two thousand years ago), tried to make his own horrible creations (which failed because they burned up when sunlight first reached Neopia), and only stayed when he saw Neopets start appearing. His exact age is a mystery, but we know that he figured out how to mutate Neopets when he was 88 years old. We also have no idea what the actual fuck he is. He's not a Neopet and gets actively offended when someone calls him one. He also won the Year 10 Gormball Championship.

Mephala is a Daedric Prince whose sphere is obscured to mortals, but she is associated with murder, lies, deception, sex, and secrets. She and her worshipers both adore secrets and intrigue. In Skyrim, she is whispering in the ears of the young children of Jarl Balgruuf as the Whispering Lady. In the Oblivion game, Mephala has you escalate a feud between two families into all-out combat. In the Morrowind game, Mephala has you poison Balyn Omavel, an important member of the Morag Tong who has been performing assassinations without writs.

See, the Morag Tong is an ancient Morrowind guild of legal assassins that has long been in the service of Mephala. The Dark Brotherhood is believed to be a rebellious, far-reaching splinter faction of the Morag Tong. Some people even believe that the Night Mother is Mephala, though others disagree. Does it matter if she is or not? Arguably, the answer is no - murder and intrigue still abound well beyond the constraints of Morrowind, so even if she's not directly involved, I imagine that Mephala's having a great time.

There's also a lot more lore than this, but for the sake of not making this post three hundred feet long on the dash, I'll stop there. There are links, you can follow those to the UESP for more of that sweet, sweet lore.

If ever there was a true Devil figure (in terms of the tarot) in the Elder Scrolls games, it is Mephala, hands down. And given her presence in Skyrim, I have no complaints about her appearing in the Skyrim game, considering she's directly tied to what is possibly the first Jarl that players will meet through the game.

Okay, it’s been a week and TNT still hasn’t fixed their stupid bug, so here is the Zurroball comic published last week in the Times.

The first one is the censored version that was published, the second was the original dialogue. I was pretty sure when I drew it I wouldn’t be able to sneak it past the censors, but I wanted to see what I could get away with anyway.

Look. Reading that Zurroball joke in the Neopian Times the first time blew my fourteen-year-old brain so hard I can still remember the exact dialogue today. It also may have had something to do with the little teenage crush I developed on Sloth not long after.
