I have stumbled upon my old skin and hair care routine. I see a dermatologist now so my skin and hair are better now so let’s see what’s changed!
Tumblr media
Skin ✨
I’m still on Yaz (birth control) which does help a lot
Morning
I wash using the Differin cleaner (the daily deep)
I treat my skin with clindamycin
Then sunscreen which is still la roche posay 100 spf.
I don’t wear much makeup anymore so I just reapply sunscreen every 2 hrs. If I do have makeup I still use the Derma e sunscreen powder.
I don’t use moisturizer in the morning because I learned from the youtuber and dermatologist Dr. Dray you don’t need to use both moisturizer AND sunscreen at the same time.
Night
Remove waterproof sunscreen and/or makeup with Albolene cleansing balm.
Wash with a basic Cerave cleanser
La Roche Posay lipikar moisturizer (my derm said it’s the best for acne prone skin.)
Tretinoin (prescription retinol)
And MAYBE Cerave healing ointment as a sleep mask on my period since my skin gets dry now for some reason?
That’s it!
Hair
My hair is fine, dense, wavy, with highlights. My main problem is frizz.
I shampoo with redken all soft shampoo.
Condition with frizz dismiss conditioner
Once a week I use a protein hair mask that I have no idea what it is. I bought it from my salon when my stylist suggested it.
When my hair is wet I use the Redkin leave in conditioner, the acidic bonding one.
I then spray the quick blow out spray also by Redken 😅. It’s a heat protectant and it helps your hair dry faster which I need because I have way too much hair.
Then I blow dry using a round brush hair dryer.
I just bought jumbo rollers to set my hair in but I haven’t used them yet.
Once dry I apply oil to the ends. I’m still searching for my holy grail oil so no suggestions.
For dry shampoo I use a 1930’s hair powder which I will link in the end. It’s for blondes and is AMAZING. It takes more work but it’s worth it. Basically apply to the hair at the scalp and massage in. Leave it in over night and brush it out with a boar bristle brush the next morning.
There it is! My current routine!
skincare routine ?
hair routine ?
💞
I have a detailed skin care routine somewhere on my blog but I can’t find it so I’ll redo it!
I take birth control for my endocrinological disorder and it helps with acne. The best brith control for acne is Yaz.
Morning ☀️
Wash face with Neogen a clear foaming cleanser
Exfoliate 2 times a week with Rachel’s best soaps exfoliating peel.
Tone with AHA BHA PHA 30 day miracle toner
Apply medicine of Clindamycin and let dry
Apply vitamin C serum and use my red light wand if I have time in the morning. I have seen wonders with my acne scars from the red light therapy!
Moisturize with Cerave because it’s cheap and has ceramides.
Apply sunscreen which is la roche posay 100 melt in milk sunscreen.
On the go use derma e sun screen powder
Night 🌙
Cleanse off makeup with either clean it zero oil cleanser or micellar water. The oil works better but it’s is more labor intensive so if I’m tired after work I use the water.
Wash with Neogen.
Tone with same toner
Use Clindamycin
Use peach and lily glass skin serum and red light wand.
Apply retinol. I use inky list for face and the peace out retinol eye stick for the eyes. However I do want to get prescription strength soon.
Moisturize with Cerave
Then apply an oil. Like grape seed which helps acne or bio oil.
Face masks
I recommend the ordinary salicylic acid mask for breakouts. For sheet masks I love sincere Laura sake lees masks , Tony moly’s I’m rice masks, and Petitfee gold snail hydro masks.
Hair 💇‍♀️
I clarify once a week with nature lab clarifying scalp scrub.
Shampoo with Redken color extend blondage so that my highlights don’t go brassy.
Condition with Himawari gloss and repair. I really recommend Japanese conditioner for ladies with fine hair.
After shower I spray living proof restore perfecting spray.
And if air drying I also use glasglow sea salt spray
Boar brushes are amazing to use too!

Will you drop a skincare tutorial, some of us are breaking OUT! And you seem to know what you're doing, so....
Well I'm not gonna drop a full routine because I'm not a dermatologist, nor am I an esthetician, and as such I'm not comfy saying the advice I'm giving is iron clad
However I do feel comfortable giving a few general pointers I've picked up from watching other derms and estheticians on YouTube:
Sunscreen is a necessity. Yes even on cloudy days or when you're indoors. UV (ultraviolet) rays are the biggest factor in skin damage are the biggest cause for skin cancer. A mineral sunscreen uses naturally derived mineral filters to shield you from UV rays, whereas a chemical sunscreen will use synthesized chemical filters to do so. Both have their merits and work for different people
With that in mind, I'll be honest; shopping for a good sunscreen is hard. Especially if you have a dark skin tone. But honestly, if you decide to break the bank for anything in your routine, let it be your sunscreen.
LaRoche Posay is a brand that makes quite a few tinted mineral sunscreens (the tint is so a you're less likely to be on the receiving end of a whitecast) that I've read very good reviews from.
If chemical sunscreens are more up your alley and you're able to, I recommend looking into South Korean sunscreens
The most basic routine you can get is just a cleanser and sunscreen
Introducing an extra humectant to your skin can help a great deal with hydration! Humectants being ingredients that help preserve or attract moisture to the skin. A great one to look for both as a separate serums or as a component in moisturizers is hyaluronic acid!
Finding out your skin type is a good start to finding out which products might work for you. This guide from CeraVe is a great and easy start to that!
If you're acne prone and have tried a multitude of things to try and get rid of it (I myself had horrible acne growing up and even with antibiotics I took for it I never felt like I had it under control until the last couple years) then products containing salicylic acid are something I recommend. Ben
If you can I advise staying away from products containing artificial fragrance. Often times, those fragrances are achieved with essential oils which are normally formulated high amounts of alcohol which can be incredibly drying or irritating to the skin. If you turn the container around and look under the Ingridients label and you see "Fragrance" or "Parfume" or either "Limonene" or "Linolool" that's your tip off
That being said often times even if you have oilier skin, your skin CAN be needing some naturally derived or cold pressed oil to help balance things out! A brand called The Ordinary has a 1 oz bottle of rosehip seed oil that I use every night, just two drops combined with my moisturizer is enough
Above all else: everyone's skin is different and what works for my skin is not necessarily going to work for you
I also highly recommend checking out the following people as they're who I watch constantly when I'm looking for products as well as info:
Dr. Dray - Board certified dermatologist on YouTube and immensely knowledgeable
Dr. Alexis Stephens - Another board certified dermatologist on YouTube who is also very knowledgeable but places a focus on skincare for black people and other darker skintones
Cassandra Bankson - Medical esthetician who is open about her struggles with acne and has a lot of videos relating to such
Michelle Wong/Lab Muffin Beauty Science - Chemistry PhD and self described skincare nerd who has a lot of videos relating to why certain ingredients react with our skin the way they do as well as just the science behind cosmetics in general

since some people have trouble with skincare here is skincare 101 aka the most longest ask you’ve probably ever had. disclaimer: i have combination skin and acne prone skin.
when you’re beginning your skincare routine start with a cleanser, a moisturizer, and an spf. after you’ve got that down then you can add treatments and actives. adding too much at once or using too many actives can freak your skin out. always wash your hands throughly before you wash your face. i use the fab pore purifying foam cleanser by soap and glory in the morning and the acne defense cleanser by pacifica at night. they’re 12 and 10 dollars on ulta.com. drug store brand like neutrogena, clearasil, and cerave are also good options. for high end brands i like peter thomas roth and paula’s choice. i use the moisture rescues refreshing gel cream by garnier as my moisturizer. it’s about $6 on amazon. the green is for normal to combo skin and the pink for dry skin. contrary to popular belief even if you have oily skin you need a moisturizer. and eye cream is overrated. usually they’re just expensive moisturizers and you get less product in the container, but if you think eye creams help you then go for it.
sunscreen is your best friend! whatever other skincare products and treatments you use will not matter if you don’t protect your skin. i use the neutrogena ultra sheer dry touch spf 100+ since i have super pale skin. i got it off amazon for like $8. i use this everyday. in the summer, winter, rainy days, when i’m not going outside. i don’t want to be looking like a leather couch at 35. you can use spf 50, 70, 45 as long as you’re using spf that’s what matters. skin cancer is a real thing. if i’m not wearing makeup i will reapply the neutrogena sunscreen, but if i am wearing makeup i will use the ulta wannabe active spf 50 setting spray. just remember to close your eyes and hold your breath when you apply.
for treatments i love the brands the inkey list and the ordinary. both are very affordable brands. i recommend the ordinary’s aha/bag peeling solution. it’s a chemical exfoliater that you put on your skin for no more than 10 minutes once a week. it gets rid of dead skin cells and helps with texture. physical exfoliaters like scrubs are ok but it depends on the brand. st ives apricot scrub is a big no no since the beads are uneven and jagged which can cause micro tears in the skin and hurt your skin in the long run. i also recommend the inkey list retinol. retinol is a derivative of vitamin A and helps reduce signs of early aging and acne scars as well as brighten your skin so it doesn’t look dull and sickly.
sheet masks are also a good skincare item to have. i like the ones by tonymoly and miss spa. there are so many types for so many skin concerns. clay masks are really good for oily skin. i recommend the aztec indian healing clay mask which is also good for acne.
unfortunately makeup wipes can do more harm then good. they don’t actually get all of the makeup off and can cause premature wrinkles since you’re tugging and rubbing at the skin with them. removing makeup with micellar water, the original makeup remover cloth, or a second cleaner is a better option. i know it’s hard for many people, myself included, but stop picking at your skin. those blackhead and pimples look so poppable, but realistically your just going to give yourself acne scars. plus, you could spread bacteria from on area of the skin to the other. spot treatments like pimple patches and drying lotions are better options if you don’t want to invest in extraction tools and use them properly.
skincare is really important and we all have to learn sometime. even though i’m only 21 i care a lot about anti aging because looking like a leather couch at 35 is not what i want for my life. i think it’s better to prevent skincare problems than to treat them. youtubers i really like who make videos about this stuff are dr dray, doctorly, and mixed makeup. when you look good, you feel good. when you feel good, you look good. 💞💖
You're incredible 😘😘😘 thanks

Oily skin anon here...Yeah, effaclar is great and not too stripping like a lot of acne products can be. I've tried the cleansers and the salicylic & glycolic acid serum. Unfortunately, the moisturizer is nothing special. Honestly, I've never had much luck finding a decent moisturizer. I'm currently using one of the toleriane line, which at least doesn't have fragrance. As for sensitive, red skin anon, I know they have a cream for rosacea and my mother uses one called kerium for red and flaky skin. She seems happy with it!
hi again anon! love talking acne and oily skin, and I don’t do it enough smdh. so lets talk moisturizers because they are important as fuck and often misunderstood by like everyone, especially people with oily skin. this is something that imo can exacerbate skin concerns and make oily skin oilier/dry skin drier/etc. so I’m gonna talk a bit about WHY they are important and then I will get into what different skins might need, and what you might consider trying.
the main purpose of a moisturizer is to lock in moisture (lol) and prevent transepidermal water loss (water evaporating through your skin’s top layers, aka your epidermis). without getting too technical, your skin has this handy thing called a moisture barrier/acid mantle that is integral to maintaining healthy skin. our skin’s barrier is naturally acidic due to sebum production (so oil) and sweat, around a 5 pH, to protect our bodies from viruses and bacteria.
so when we talk about stripping our skin of its natural oils, you know that squeaky clean feeling? that’s bad. it’s actually damaging your moisture barrier, making your skin more alkaline and leaving your skin vulnerable to germs and irritation. this is very common in dry skin, but people with oily, acne-prone skin have been sold so much nonsense for ages - the charcoal masks, baking soda cleansers and exfoliants, pore strips etc all spring to mind - and so often they will strip their skin’s natural oils and then send their sebum production into overdrive to compensate. this is why many people with oily skin actually find introducing certain kinds of oils into their skincare helps control oil production - sort of like tricking your skin into thinking it already made enough oil.
and to be clear, all skins need a good balance of water and oil - in fact this is what decides your skin type.
when skin is dry it lacks oil. normal skin has a equal balance of water and oil. oily skin has too much oil. combination skins have some areas that are one type and others that are another type. sensitive skin is also a skin type and it tends to be dry. your skin type doesn’t really change, although as we age our skin does produce less sebum over time. this is why people with oilier skin tend to look younger.
all skins can be sensitized and dehydrated - think moisture = oil and hydration = water. these are conditions, not skin types, because they can go away with treatment. my skin is always going to be somewhat dry even if it needs less oil during the summer and through good skin care. thanks genetics XD
if I don’t drink enough water, my skin will look crepe-y and older because I am dehydrated. thanks to environmental factors like pollution, stuff I put into my body, my stress levels, allergens, the amount of sun I get, etc - my skin can get more sensitized and irritated. when we deal with that stuff, the condition goes away (until the next time).
so all of that out of the way, what do the skin types need in moisturizers? so all of this is variable and depends on what other products are being used.
dry skin needs an oil-based moisturizer, non-negotiable. dry skin NEEDS to feed that acid mantle to prevent irritation, infection, etc. a thicker ointment is a great option for dry skin (like the cerave healing ointment I stan, it’s very lightweight and doesn’t have lanolin so it really is great for all skins). normal skin needs a good balanced moisturizer, often a light cream as opposed to an ointment or a lotion.
oily skin needs LESS oil in a moisturizer than dry skin does. that doesn’t mean NO oil, and again I do think that some topical oils are beneficial to oily skin, but generally speaking a lighter, water-based lotion is going to be better.
some moisturizers that I recommend for oily skin (besides the cerave healing ointment):
neutrogena hydro boost
dermalogica active moist - I am certified in dermalogica and while I don’t love all of their moisturizers I think this one is great. oily skinned folks lucked out.
glow recipe pink juice moisturizer - I actually have a mini bottle I use during the day under my SPF because my facial skin is pretty balanced at the moment. this does have fragrance but I am not opposed to fragrance by default (does the fragrance have other purposes - ie preservative, does it irritate my asthma, obviously do I have issues with that particular brand, etc. I want to talk about why fragrance (and other ingredients tbh cough parabens) isn’t inherently evil at some point because it’s all a matter of labeling practices, and clinique - a fragrance-free brand I worked for which works so well for so many people, is a NO NO for me)
I have also heard really good things about the cerave hydrating hyaluronic acid serum as a moisturizer for oily skin but I haven’t used it myself YET. if it is at all similar to my beloved b-hydra serum by (blegh) drunk elephant (eurghhh) then it’s a go.
belif aqua bomb is a good one, too
clinique’s dramatically different hydrating jelly is probably my favorite product from when I worked for the brand
on rosacea, I want to be clear that because rosacea is a medical condition it is important that if someone thinks they might have it they go to a medical professional to get it diagnosed and treated clinically. same thing with cystic acne (lol not to be a total hypocrite).
here are some really good videos from two actual dermatologists online who I really respect:
dr dray (so a lot of her videos have sponsorships but like who cares, she is clear about it and a dermatologist) -  best oily skincare (sponsored by walmart i know guys but like it’s a good video), 10 best products from lrp, best sunscreens for oily skin
dr vanita rattan (specialized in skin of color) - oily skin moisturizers, cleansers for oily skin, best sunscreens for oily skin, all of her videos omfg
anyway wow hope this helped!

I recommend Cassandra Bankson and Dr Dray on YouTube for good skincare advice. Also I use stuff from the Inkey list for my veeery acne prone skin and they are incredible and super affordable. And the oily + dry skin combo sounds to me like youmight be stripping your skin and maybe need something more gentle. Aggressive treatment and cleansing could be worsening or even causing breakouts!
thank you for the tip!!🥰

I think I speak for many of us when I say that we do not play around when it comes to finding the right products for our faces. From fancy creams to luxurious makeup products, many of us are not afraid to occasionally splurge on a great find, but when we find a drugstore product that works just as well—if not better—than some of the pricier items in our beauty cabinet, we become loyal to it for years. I’m here to share my ultimate beauty find: a drugstore BB cream that I have been using every single day for over five years.
For those of you asking yourselves what a BB cream even is, the term is short for from “beauty balm” or “blemish balm” and originated in Korea before gaining traction here. So when BB creams became real buzzy, I found myself searching the drugstore aisles for something that would act similarly to a tinted moisturizer and wouldn’t irritate my face.
In my opinion, they’re a holy grail type of beauty product because they’re developed to be an all-in-one makeup product, with the added benefit of being packed with helpful skincare ingredients. But, as someone with combination and acne-prone skin, I needed to find a BB cream one that wouldn’t clog my pores and cause me to break out. After years of layering on heavy foundation and powders, I decided I needed something much lighter that would save me time (and money) on my beauty routine while still evening out my complexion and covering up the occasional angry red pimple. Enter Garnier’s BB Cream 5-in-1 Miracle Skin Perfector.
I became drawn to it because of its special formula made specifically for oily/combination skin. Made with hyaluronic acid, microspheres, and glycerin, this particular formula is able to keep my skin moisturized while still providing the shine control I need. It also contains antioxidants and vitamin C, which help to even out skin tone over time. Plus, it has SPF 20, because a girl’s gotta stay protected from those harmful UV rays. It always leaves my skin feeling super soft, supple, and fresh, and I never go a day without it.
There are two different formulas of Garnier’s BB cream (including an anti-aging one that my mom is obsessed with), but I use the lighter-weight one. It has an almost runny consistency, and just a nickel-sized dollop will cover your entire face. What I love most about it is that it truly glides on your skin seamlessly, creating an even layer in one simple step. You’ll never have to worry about streaking or cakiness.
I usually apply it with my fingers to save time, but it also works well with a beauty blender or another type of makeup sponge. For a sheer formula, you’d be surprised at how well it covers up redness and problem spots. In recent years I’ve had major dark circles under my eyes, and I’ve found that these products do wonder for camouflaging them.
Since I found this drugstore BB cream, I’ve officially ditched heavy foundations for good. I’ve found that it has improved my overall complexion, and I’ve had bottles last me 10 months to a year each. At such an affordable price, you can’t beat a singular product that acts as a moisturizer, sunscreen, and light foundation in one. Take it from me: After application, you won’t even look like you have no makeup on—you’ll just look like the more well-rested, radiant version of yourself.
